MAYOR & COUNCIL

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the 2017 Town of Aurora Winter Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Program Guide! Winter is an active season for our community filled with many recreational programs and special events for all to enjoy. This guide features many affordable recreational activities such as skating, fitness, swimming and indoor sports. Our recreation staff are continually upgrading and expanding our program opportunities to meet the needs of our residents. Please browse through this guide to see all the wonderful programs Aurora has to offer. Do you want to stay fit during the winter months? Visit Club Aurora Fitness Centre located at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex. Members have access to a wide variety of cardiovascular and weight training equipment and specialty programs. This facility also

features a 90-metre, indoor track with a rubberized sports surface. Club memberships can be purchased for one, three, six and 12-month periods. We also offer reduced prices for students, youth, older adults and additional family members. Kids can also stay healthy year-round by following the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. This challenge is a province-wide initiative, working within 45 communities. The challenge is being run out of the Windfall Ecology Centre. The goal is to create a community where it’s easy for kids to be active and eat healthy. For more information, visit windfallcentre.ca/ healthykids. I invite you to learn more about the Town of Aurora and our programs and services. Please visit aurora.ca or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Sincerely,

Mayor Geoffrey Dawe

Stability balls (also called exercise balls, balance balls, Swiss balls or fitness balls) are more than just fun to sit and bounce on – they are a great way to improve strength, cardio endurance and balance. By tackling basic moves (like pushups, squats and planks) on an unstable surface, muscles get more bang for their buck. Stability balls are also great for getting back into shape after an injury because they can reduce muscle and spinal strain during certain movements. Date: Time: Fee: Code: Location:

GENERAL SWIMMING LESSON INFORMATION

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SWIMMING LESSONS Support your child’s learning through participation in the recreational swimming programs. Set realistic goals for your child, encouraging them to do their best. Learning to swim can be enjoyable, but like many skills, it takes time, practise and patience. It is important to remember that each swimmer advances at his/her own pace. Not completing a level the first time, or even the second time, simply means there are important skills to continue to improve upon. Success in swimming lessons comes in many different forms - learning new skills, increasing confidence, and gaining a feeling of accomplishment.

WHAT LEVEL SHOULD I REGISTER IN? Visit our pool and one of the Aquatic Staff can assist you in determining what level to register in. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers free swimming lesson assessments. Please contact the Deck Supervisor on duty to request a screening during scheduled leisure swim times.

REPEATING A LEVEL? Show your last report card to the Instructor to allow practise time on skills requiring development. To progress to the next level, all items must be completed.

LESSON START TIME Participants should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time (not earlier). You may wish to escort your child to their lesson on the first day to meet the Instructor. Please remove outdoor shoes in the shower area and pool deck.

22

DECK SUPERVISOR There is a designated Deck Supervisor on deck and available to answer your questions or concerns. They also provide a link between you and the instructor. Ask and the Deck Supervisor will be happy to assist you.

CHANGE ROOM ADMITTANCE GUIDELINE For the comfort of all patrons, children 7 years of age and older must use the appropriate change room of their own gender. If this is not suitable a family change room is available.

PARENT’S DAY Parent’s Day will take place during the 5th lesson. Parents are invited on deck to watch their child’s swimming lesson and take pictures. Classes will end 5 min. early to give parents the opportunity to talk to their child’s instructor about their progress. If you wish to visit on deck, please remember to remove your shoes! Please note that picture taking is only permitted on Parent’s Day

MAKE-UP LESSONS Occasionally lessons may be cancelled due to pool fouling, mechanical, or chemical problems. Makeup classes due to participant’s illness or personal commitments will not be available. Dry-land water safety lessons are part of all learnto-swim programs. Where a pool may close in an untimely manner, Instructors will use the time to focus on dry land water safety. If this is not possible, a credit may be issued for the missed class.

POOL FOULING/CLOSURE To reduce the number of closures due to pool fouling, participants not toilet trained are required to wear snug fitting plastic pants. No disposable diapers. Also, please keep eating to a minimum prior to swimming. Swim diapers are available at the Customer Service Desk.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS Do not leave valuables and belongings unattended in change rooms or cubicles. Use lockers or take belongings to your program area. The Town of Aurora is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

CELL PHONES, FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHY Please note that to ensure the privacy of others, the use of cell phone devices, filming or photography will not be permitted in the change rooms, viewing gallery or pool area during swimming programs or recreational swims.

STROLLER Strollers are not permitted on the pool deck or in the shower area. Please use the designated stroller parking area located in the family change room.

FAMILY CHANGE ROOM The family change room is for mixed gender families, unaccompanied children and persons with identified special needs and their caregiver. Everyone else is encouraged to use the gender specific change rooms.

PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS AURORA ARENA PROGRAMS SENIORS PARKS &CENTRE TRAILS

AQUATIC LEARN TO SWIM PEDESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM

The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town Facilities and open space corridors. At present the Town maintains approximately 25 kilometers of trails. All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks. Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times.

OUTDOOR WINTER SKATING

The Town currently constructs four outdoor ice skating rinks within our neighbourhood parks. These are located at Town Park, Confederation Park, Machell Park & Ada Johnson Park. The ice rinks are natural surface and are weather permitting, with construction typically taking place in the early New Year. All rinks are lit for evening skating and are mixed use, with hockey and pleasure skating taking place on the same rink. We ask users to respect others and wear protective gear at all times while on the ice.

TOBOGGANING

Due to the undulating topography in the town, it is not uncommon for residents to utilize these sloped areas for tobogganing. It is important to know that dangers exist in these areas (the Town recommends not using these areas). Tobogganing is permitted in the following dedicated areas: Fleury Park (south of Aurora Heights Dr and the ACC parking lot), Machell Park (north of the parking area on the west side of the park), ALFC Lambert Willson Park (along the east side of the building) and Copland Park (along the north side of the park). Tobogganers are reminded that these designated locations are unsupervised by the Town and surface areas can vary widely with ice and other hazardous conditions. All tobogganers using these facilities do so at their own risk. Children should be supervised by an adult. Participants should use appropriate safety equipment.

MEMORIAL TREE PROGRAM

The Town of Aurora has a Memorial Tree Planting policy to enable the planting or designation of memorial trees on municipal lands within the Town. For more information on the Memorial Tree Planting Policy, please visit the Town of Aurora website.

PARK BENCH DONATION PROGRAM

In response to requests from our residents who are regular users of our parks and trails, the Parks and Recreation Services Department is pleased to provide a Park Bench Donation Program. You can be part of the program and partner with the Parks and Recreation Services Department in donating a park bench complete with a personalized message of your choice which will be inserted on the bench. Your bench will be installed in a location of your choice in our parks or trails system and our staff will ensure that your bench receives the care and maintenance it deserves for years to come. Our Park Bench Donation program would make a great gift for that special person who is hard to buy for and will truly be a gift that keeps on giving to all of those in need of a place to rest in our parks and along our trail system. For more information on the Park Bench Donation Program, please visit the Town of Aurora website.

AURORA ADOPT-A-PARK YOUR CHANCE TO GROW WITH THE COMMUNITY!

Over 700 acres of Parkland, an outstanding Trail System and friendly tree-lined streets contribute to Aurora’s natural beauty and make it a place we’re proud to call home. Did you know that the Adopt-A-Park program provides local businesses, community groups and residents with the opportunity to enhance the environment and beautify our town by assisting with the maintenance and development of Aurora’s parks and trail systems? • Creating the opportunity for citizens to support our parks and green spaces • Sharing the responsibility for a clean community • Developing opportunities for youth involvement • Building community pride and a sense of ownership in our parklands From tree to shrub plantings, there are a number of ways for individuals, interested groups and organizations to become involved in this exciting program. For more information on the Adopt-A-Park Program, please visit the Town of Aurora website.

It could be a pair of track shoes, a theatrical costume, or maybe even a robotics set. If your child has a passion for something, we will harness it and take it to a whole new level. If they have yet to find it, we will dig down deep and explore all the possibilities, and not stop until we unearth that one thing that opens their mind and their eyes as big as humanly possible. It’s an incredible place to discover big, dreamy answers to the question,
