From the Publishers New business people on our beaches often ask, “When does the beach get busy?” The answer is “Now.” Height of season in our beach communities is Valentine’s Day to Easter! This is when you are likely to find the highest rates on hotel and motel rooms, and the least vacancies. Reservations in the most popular restaurants are hard to get, particularly on weekends. It is also when activities in the area are in full swing. With COVID breakthrough infections still a concern, it is good to see lots of outdoor options like the season’s first Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, major golf and tennis tournaments at Innisbrook and Saddlebrook, runs, walks, and bike rides. It is good to see indoor activities have resumed in person at local performance venues with appropriate precautions. You will be reading more about the Florida Orchestra, Mahaffey, and Palladium later in this and upcoming issues. Pay particular attention to the Jazz Festival at the Palladium. Great local talent is on display with social distancing practiced. One of the secrets to enjoying a meal out, despite the crowds, is being willing to eat other than at the most popular time, and hunting for restaurants that are not yet peaking, on Trip Advisor. It is a great time to try something new. If you have a stove, consider getting “The Best Pot On The Beach” from Outer Banks Boil Company at Dolphin Village Shopping Center. They opened in June and have quickly become a local favorite. There is a story about them in our November 2021 issue, under archives at www.paradisenewsfl.com. They can also cater your event for a very reasonable fee. The Bayou Market and Café on Central Ave. specializes in Cajun and comfort food to go, and also caters parties and events, including awesome shrimp and crawfish boils. Valentine’s Day has always been a special time for Renee and me. We have celebrated at The Pearl and Middle Grounds in Treasure Island and at MadFish in St. Pete Beach, which has the area’s best Chateaubriand and Beef Wellington, in addition to awesome seafood options. There are several excellent options in Tierra Verde, too, including the Island Grille and Raw Bar, recently purchased by Steve Westphal of “Gotosteves.com.” We recently enjoyed a wonderful dinner, including crispy duck and Hungarian Goulash at “Good Times,” one of the most established Tierra Verde dining places. If you are looking for Chinese take-away, Wong Lee’s (in front of Billy’s in “downtown” Tierra Verde) is by far the best in the area. Renee started Paradise NEWS with Sally Yoder, a fellow volunteer at the fledgling Gulf Beaches Historical Museum on 10th Avenue in Pass-a-Grille. Although Sally has not been involved for years, we wanted to acknowledge her early contributions as we share the news of her recent passing. PHOTO BY JANET NUMMI

Coping with Covid

By Michael Moses

A recent study at Oregon State Health & Science University found that certain cannabinoid acids may have the ability to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells. “Van Breemen and collaborators, including scientists at OSU, found that a pair of cannabinoid acids bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people.” The study goes on to say, “the two cannabinoids with the highest affinities for the spike protein were CBDA and CGBA, and they were confirmed to block infection.”

Events sponsored by The Centre often include the opportunity to meet representatives of several dispensaries in one beach location. Such an opportunity will be on April 30, when The Centre hosts the second annual 420 Festival.

Does this mean that smoking cannabis will block infection? No. These cannabinoids are only found in the raw plant and minimally processed products.

What was your Covid experience like? I had 104.7 fever for 12 hours. Then 102 for 24 hours before back to normal! Extreme headaches and a heavy sadness depression.

www.today.oregonstate.edu/news/oregon-state-rsearch-showshemp-compounds-prevent-coronavirus-entering-human-cells The Centre of St. Pete Beach is a cannabis-centric educational, meeting and event facility, located at the crossroads of Blind Pass Road and 76th Ave., St. Pete Beach 33706. Inside, there is a large yoga room where a variety of classes are conducted, and an intimate massage room, with massage therapists on staff. A comfortable sitting area feels like someone’s living room. Classes on integrating cannabis into your diet are held in an open kitchen area. A recent Valentine-themed class dipped strawberries into “enhanced” melted chocolate. Triverde Health has a doctor’s office where you can get certified for medical marijuana by appointment. Coping with Covid – The omicron variant has been everywhere lately and recently found The Centre@St Pete Beach’s Michael Moses who used cannabis for his symptoms.

What kinds of medications did you use to ease your symptoms? • Tylenol for the 36 hours of fever, along with a variety of CBD and THC products from The Centre. • Impirica cream on the exterior of my neck and glands each night before bed time, to keep the swelling of those glands down. • CR Balance Coconut Oil once the COVID became a sinus infection. Three times daily I coated my interior gumlines along the side of the sinus pain. I sprayed CR Relief on the outside of my cheek where I felt sinus pressure. • Synchronicity capsules - Used for overall treatment and I felt like a new person the next morning. The extra boost of CBD really made a difference in my energy level and lightened my mood.

The weekend schedule, highlighted by the race, will have a full complement of racing series on track. IndyCar’s future stars will battle in the Indy Lights series. More of the sport’s rising stars looking to climb the professional racing ladder will compete in Indy Pro 2000 Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship doubleheader races for both series. IMSA-sanctioned Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup, and SRO’s GT America also add two races each to a loaded schedule with some fender-to-fender showroom stock racing for fans to enjoy.

Corey McMaster

Corey McCaster, EDFP, recently joined Pinellas County Economic Development as division director for small business and supplier diversity. Corey has 20 years in small business assistance. As economic development manager with Hillsborough County, he helped small to medium-sized businesses find new market opportunities, hidden profits and innovative ways to create sustainable growth. He provided expert-level business consulting, specializing in small business accounting and finance, quality improvement and strategic business planning. His experience managing his own small businesses and serving at the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity allows him to deliver a unique perspective.

Corey Landing’s proposed $90 million mixed-use development on the east end of Corey Ave. is inching closer to breaking ground. St. Pete Beach city commissioners unanimously allocated 150 units from the city’s residential pool, which allows developer Ram Realty Advisors to build 243 luxury residential units. The proposed dock-up restaurant would have 3,500 sq ft of indoor dining space and 1,500 sq. ft. outdoors. In addition to the 243 residential units, the development would include 12,000 square feet of commercial and retail space. The team noted how the property currently takes in $94,000 in tax revenue, but the development would bring in $1.3 million of annual revenue to the city. “A recent traffic study determined the roads can handle the increased activity,” said SPB city manager Alex Rey. Ram Realty Advisors is known for other sophisticated projects, such as the urban infill mixed-use Curv development in Fort Lauderdale which was completed last year. It is on three acres of land and includes an eight-story luxury apartment complex with Whole Foods as the anchor. The team is working with North Carolina-based design consultant Kimley-Horn and Florida-based LRK (Looney Ricks Kiss) Architects.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

BUYING A BUSINESS These days, many people are tempted to stop working for someone else, and start working for themselves, especially when they have a bit of a nest egg saved up and can make some moves. At the same time, other people who have run their own businesses for years are getting tired of the grind, and are ready to change their life, too. So, when one person from category 1 can get together with another from category 2, beautiful things can happen, right? You better believe it! BUT, that DOESN’T mean beautiful things will necessarily happen. Many things can go wrong. The business being sold might not be in the best locale for the future, even though it was the perfect place years ago. Problems with staffing, supply chain issues, or changes in demand may raise their ugly heads. These are all things that you, as a business person, must evaluate before you make the decision to act. However, other factors may already be in place, but are just unknown to you.

debts payable. Fortunately, the buyer was still in a position to force the seller to make it right, but only after incredible stress.

You may assume the seller tells you everything you need to know before you buy, but experience shows that is clearly not always true! First, the business may not be quite as solid as claimed. How do you confirm the revenue and expense figures you are provided with? There could be debts and liens you have no idea about, or lawsuits in progress or about to hit that have not been disclosed. We’ve been involved in two business purchases recently where debts and liens were present, but not disclosed. In one case, just days after closing, liens on all the equipment used by the business started showing up, along with taxes and other

In another case, six months after buying, the client was hit with a lawsuit for (many) tens of thousands of dollars of debt. Then another lawsuit was filed for another chunk of money! Taken together, they are forcing the buyer to consider taking his “brand new” business into bankruptcy. This is not the outcome he had dreamed about. When you buy a residence, the law imposes a duty on the seller to disclose so-called “covert defects,” but commercial real estate has no such protection, beyond the due diligence of the buyer, and the advice of the law “caveat emptor” (let the buyer beware). Very few buyers know all of the tools available to look for such lurking land mines. But experienced lawyers do, and can make this process much safer for you and your life savings. Rising Science Stars in Pinellas County Story by STEVE TRAIMAN

Women are taking a leadership role in STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, Math) programs in Pinellas County, with expanding results for girls of all ages. A sampling of programs includes the Pinellas County Schools STEM Academies, the USF College of Marine Science Oceanography Camp for Girls, and the St. Pete Science Fest. One good university example of the history of women in science is Rockefeller University in New York City. According to the university’s website, www.rockefeller.edu, • The university has long been a leader in promoting the careers of women scientists and takes great pride in this role. The groundbreaking Women & Science program has helped to support and recruit women scientists and faculty for nearly 25 years, and the university has become recognized around the world for its cadre of exceptional women scientific leaders. • However, while the university is home to 35 portraits of male scientists who have contributed to its distinguished history, there is not a single portrait of a woman scientist on the entire campus. Brooklyn-based artist Brenda Zlamany, who painted a portrait of Yale’s first seven women Ph.D. students that hangs in the university’s Sterling Library, has been commissioned for this project. • In the spirit of the Yale portrait, the university decided to commission a portrait of not one but five pioneering women scientists from Rockefeller University: Drs. Marie Daly: nuclei of tissues and ribonucleoprotein, Rebecca Lancefield: hemolytic streptococci; Louise Pearce: trypanosomiasis aka African sleeping sickness; Gertrude Perlmann; investigation of proteins in bodily fluids; and Florence Sabin; immune system cells and tubercular lesions, and the first woman named full professor. • Each of these women held significant tenures at Rockefeller or went on to have careers at other institutions after training at the university. All were among the first women in their fields. Once completed, this portrait will be installed prominently above the fireplace in the lounge of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Hall.

USF Oceanography Camp for Girls The USF College of Marine Science in St. Pete launched its first Oceanography Camp for Girls (OCG) in 1991. That also was the year digital cell phone technology was launched, although most people still had phones attached to walls – and the year “the web” became publicly OCG teen scientists observe sediment samples from the seafloor during a research cruise aboard available, although few knew what that really meant. the R/V Angari. (Photo credit: OCG 2021) How the world has changed since 1991. But the OCG has stood the test of time. Last year’s 30th anniversary camp was held, in person, in July. Dr. Teresa Greely, Director, USF College of Marine Science’s Education & Outreach, oversees the Oceanography Camp for Girls. During the camp operation, Teresa has been there, too. Her first camp experience began as a graduate student in the then Department of Marine Science. In the College she also teaches year-round and facilitates a series of ocean-themed professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers, and coastal field trips for their students. This three-week summer program, designed for young women from Pinellas County in their sandwich summer between middle school and high school, has earned billing by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a model for immersive, experiential STEM learning for women and girls. Activities include a spectrum of hands-on field trips, guided laboratory experiments, interviews with scientists, communications training, and more. The camp is offered at no charge every year to 30 young women inclusive of all backgrounds, literacy, and aptitude levels — culturally, socially, economically and otherwise. More than 1,200 girls have participated since the camp’s inception. The OCG was the brainchild of former dean of the USF College of Marine Science Peter Betzer and two Pinellas County high school science teachers, Carmen Kelly and Jeanette Walker. “Over my 37-year career in marine science, one of my proudest and most significant legacies is the critical part I played in starting the OCG and then single-handedly building an endowment to support it in perpetuity,” says Betzer.“Through the years countless parents of our OCG alums have shared so many inspiring stories about the transformative experiences their young daughters had – and it’s thrilling to hear them every time.”

The OCG is now accepting applications for this year’s June 6-23 camp from eighth grade girls in Pinellas County through March 31 with this online applications link: www.usf.edu/marine-science/communityengagement/oceanography-camp-for-girls/how-to-apply/camperapplications.aspx

Pinellas County Schools STEM Academies The Pinellas County School Board began the STEM Academies program about eight years ago, according to Dr. Catherine Mullins, PCSB STEM Secondary Program Advisor. She works with Tracy Staley, elementary program advisor. The program vision is to increase STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) opportunities for Pinellas County students and encourage them to enroll in accelerated STEM courses as they progress through middle and high school. They make special efforts to include girls and other underrepresented groups in STEM programs through active recruiting. This free extra-curricular program impacts more than 5,000 students in grades K to 12 from 90-plus participating schools. The program offers students opportunities to conduct hands-on engineering design challenges, explore careers in STEM, improve teambuilding and leadership skills, learn about business planning, and interact with community and business partners. During the summer months, the K-12 STEM Department offers a STEM Innovation Summer Camp program for students entering grades 2-8 during the upcoming school year. Kim Amendola, NOAA Fisheries Communications Supervisor in St. Pete, is a founder of The St. Petersburg Science Festival, along with Alison Barlow, Executive Director, St. Pete Innovation District, The SciFest is an annual regional celebration since 2011 where families and the public can explore the wonders of hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). Barlow confirmed: “Held virtually the past two years, we hope to go live this year, again in October in conjunction with MarineQuest, the annual open house of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. “Tentatively, during the Friday, Oct. 14, Sneak Peek School Day, hundreds of elementary students will be able to experience STEAM through a series of fun, interactive demonstrations. The Saturday (Oct. 15) Public Science Festival will be full of hands-on activities and more. Programming is a little up in the air, but we typically have amazing exhibits by NOAA, US Geological Survey, USF, Eckerd College, and Clearwater Marine Aquarium, among others. “Our goals continue to be: create a positive experience with STEAM-related activities that will inspire festival visitors to seek out involvement in other STEAM activities throughout the year; increase the participation in STEAM activities of children from underrepresented communities; and provide opportunities for research and science professionals to engage in conversation with the public regarding STEAM research endeavors and diverse career opportunities.”

Mullins told Paradise News,“Our program is now called the STEM Explorer Program, for our extracurricular STEM Academy Clubs and the Summer Innovation camps. We are still working on our summer program dates and they will be posted on the STEM website at www.pcsb.org/STEM.“ Shai’ Robia Davis is one of the youngest STEM Academy graduates to carry on the STEM vision. She created Shaping the Early Mind with her husband Marquis in June 2017 as an after-school program. She noted, “The program is designed to spark an interest in the STEM fields for minority children and encourage the youth to pursue careers in these fields. Working with a collection of science, technology, engineering, and math professionals and enthusiasts, we have overcome adversity to get to where we are, and we want to reach back and pull others up and over obstacles to achieve success and their goals and dreams of excelling in STEM career fields.” More info at www.shapingtheearlymind.com. More girls have taken an increasing interest in STEM curricula – not only in Pinellas County but across the country – and this is just a good sampling of successful programs. WHY DID HOME PRICES RISE SO QUICKLY? By Keith & Tina Slater What ultimately drives up prices is when there is a heightened demand and a lack of supply. Real Estate prices in the U.S have been increasing at a healthy rate of around 3-5% annually since 2014. The events that transpired beginning March 2020 impacted all of us. A record number relocated due to changing demographic trends. The government slashed interest rates, postponed mortgage payments, and wrote checks to subsidize. It also became evident that new construction since the early 2000's had not kept up with the growing population.

Government Policy - Interest Rates In 2019, interest rates were low, relatively speaking and 2022 holds predictions of increasing significantly. The average interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages increased from 3.5% to 3.64% in just two weeks’ time.

FEBRUARY 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Demographic Trends Almost 16 million in the U.S moved in the first 6 months of 2020. Much of this was due to an increase of working from home or remotely. Quarantine has also been a factor in a unique reconsideration of what people demand of their home. Whether it be a home office, home gym, or to not be located in a metro center at all. These motivations could precipitate more home sales and purchases in years to come.

Lagging in New Construction Homebuilders pulled way back after the last crash, and they never fully ramped up to pre-2007 levels. Now, there’s no way for them to buy land and win regulatory approvals quickly enough to quench demand. While builders are building as much as they can, a repeat of the overbuilding of 15 years ago looks unlikely. As builders bring more available homes to market, more homeowners decide to sell and prospective buyers get priced out of the market, supply and demand can come back into balance. Prices will again stabilize.

Real Estate Broker, Realtor, and Real Estate Agent

In a Real Estate Transaction, there's a good chance you'll work with a Real Estate Broker, a Realtor, or a Real Estate agent. Though all of these real estate pros are licensed to help you buy, sell, or rent a home, they are distinct from one another, especially when it comes to their qualifications and which rung of the professional ladder they occupy Real Estate Brokers have completed all the requirements of a Realtor and also have additional training and completed licensing requirements. They can work independently and hire other real estate agents to work for them. They have extensive legal training, and are qualified to handle all aspects of a Real Estate Transaction. A Realtor is a licensed real estate agent who is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Members must comply with NAR's strict Code of Ethics. They must work for a sponsoring broker or brokerage firm. Real estate agents have a professional license to help people buy, sell, and rent real estate. They must work for a sponsoring broker or brokerage firm as well.

CBD & WELLNESS by Margo Gilliland

CBD and Anxiety Calm, Cool and Collected This month let’s define CBD, cannabis, marijuana, and how it can help with anxiety. The 2018 Farm Bill made it legal to grow hemp in the United States. CBD products are legal to sell if they’re derived from hemp and contain less than 0.3 percent THC. THC is the main component that is responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis. Seeking relief from anxiety is on a lot of peoples’ to-do-list. CBD is a low cost, low side effect way to see if you can get relief from your anxiety. CBD interacts with receptors in our bodies involved in a variety of functions. It is well known to be helpful for anxiety, pain and as a sleep aid in humans and pets. CBD is an extract from hemp (cannabis) plants that contain less than 0.3% THC. Radicle Science, a transformative health tech, recently released the results of history’s largest real-world study, consisting of nearly 3,000 random participants. Known as the ACES trial, (Advancing CBD Education and Science), participants said, on average, they had experienced a 71% improvement in their well-being. While 63% experienced an improvement in anxiety and sleep quality, 47% experienced improvements in pain levels. Of those, 61% reported an effect within one to four hours of taking the product. The ability to cope with anxiety is key to resilience in the face of whatever life throws at you. As I mentioned in last month’s article, CBD was life-changing for me. I discovered how to get the most help while a patient at AIMS Institute in Seattle working with a world-renowned MD, PhD, specializing in cannabis medicine. CBD comes in many forms. We carry organic, high-quality, lab-tested products. It is our passion to help others as we have been helped so much by the cannabis plant. Check out our new website www.thegoodsfl.com. HOLISTIC HEALTH

by Camilla Nichols

Holistic Health Perspectives on Longevity – An Interview with Camilla Nichols, M.S. From your perspective as a holistic health professional, is there a “fountain of youth”? Not that we know of yet, but there are regions in the world that historically have the largest numbers of centenarians. These vibrant people not only live long lives, but healthy ones as well. These regions are called “Blue Zones” and are Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California. What an amazing thing! That’s five different countries with five different diets, environments, and socio-economic factors, among other things. What could they all possibly have in common? Interestingly enough, there seems to be a pattern of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual similarities. How does that guide your work? Holistic health practitioners like me always consider our client’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual status and view disease is an indication that something is out of balance. Emotional pain, for example, can manifest into an ulcer or depression. Disease always has symptoms. They start small but get louder as we ignore them. When too loud, people typically go to the doctor and get a pill – they do not change their lifestyle or whatever it may be that they were doing or experiencing that caused the issue. Western medicine typically offers treatments to address the symptoms, rather than the cause. Healing the disease requires finding the cause, which is why holistic treatment plans involve not just food

but attention to emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions and life patterns. It also assesses a person’s “support” circles. Healing involves addressing each of these in order to achieve maximum health, which includes balance in one’s life.

but from goat or sheep’s milk and cheese rather than from cow. Drink green tea and coffee. Most also consume alcohol and indulge in a daily treat like ice cream. Many also smoke. Moderation in all foods and drinks is the norm.

Often, some careful observations and trial-and-error are involved because each of us is unique, with unique biochemistry and circumstances. What works for one of us, whether a diet or meditation, may not work for another. Discovering what works for us to find our balance is one of the keys to a long, healthy life. You get to be your own detective.

Emotional/Mental. “Blue Zone” centenarians have family and community support and participate in a variety of social activities.

“Blue Zone” centenarians provide us with some guidance, right? They do and here’s a summary. Physical. Stay active and keep moving. The majority, but not all, of “Blue Zone” areas encourage physical activity and walking. Naps are also good. Diet. Eat to live, don’t live to eat, and make the last meal of the day in the late afternoon or early evening the smallest one. Include fish, especially salmon. Eat red meat rarely and in small quantities. Have vegetables, especially squash, greens, mushrooms, sweet potatoes and yams and sea vegetables like seaweed. Eat pickled and fermented foods; legumes like lentils, chickpeas, beans; and fruit like papaya, melons, bananas, and avocado. Dairy is OK,

Spiritual. The majority participate in a church, have religious practices or were individually spiritual. They have a sense of purpose, are grateful, live a simple life, and love. Do they offer advice for the rest of us? They do. They say: • Keep going • Keep it simple and live for the day • Have no fear, relax and take it easy • Enjoy, smile and be helpful • Talk to people • Stay active (walk, garden, shop) • Treasure your memories • A spot of whiskey on occasion helps • Because, after all, age is only a number Camilla Nichols, M.S., is an author, lecturer and holistic health practitioner who works with individuals, couples and groups. Cancer survivors sometimes suffer from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). It’s not unusual for doctors to tell a patient their CIPN is untreatable. But there is hope. Ed of St. Petersburg survived testicular cancer only to be living life in constant pain. He felt as though he was walking on pins and needles, becoming weaker and weaker everyday. “I was beginning to be worried that one day I would be wheelchair bound.” Nearly half of patients who undergo chemotherapy will develop CIPN. Chemotherapy meds travel throughout the body and attack cancer cells; sadly they can also cause severe damage to healthy nerves. CIPN can begin within weeks of starting treatment and can worsen as treatment continues. Many people endure the symptoms associated with CIPN for months, or even years after they have completed chemotherapy. Symptoms include pain, tingling, burning, weakness; numbness in arms, hands, legs or feet; sudden, sharp, stabbing or shocking pain sensations; loss of touch sensation; clumsiness and

trouble using hands to pick up objects or fasten clothing; loss of balance and falling. When asked how CIPN was affecting his quality of life, Ed responded, “It was difficult to even walk up and down stairs and do things that I normally took for granted.” For some, their nerves recover over time but for most the nerve damage is “irreversible.” Ed was told this by different doctors and specialists so he decided to call Dr. Gibbons at Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine (AAIM). Dr. Gibbons uses the time-tested science of acupuncture to assist in increasing blood flow and expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease. After a series of treatments Ed was taking stairs with stride, thanks to AAIM. If you are living in constant pain and discomfort and struggling with CIPN, Dr. Gibbons and the team at AAIM can help. HEART-HEALTHY TIPS February is American Heart Month, a time when all people can focus on their cardiovascular health. The Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention is shining a light on hypertension (high blood pressure), a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Only one in four Americans have their blood pressure under control (<130/80 mm Hg). If left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can increase a person’s risk for heart disease, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, pregnancy complications, and cognitive decline later in life. Bayfront Health’s Angela McClanahan Turner, DO, Cardiovascular Disease, notes that while some heart issues are hereditary, most are controllable with diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. “You wouldn’t ignore the ‘check engine’ light on your car, would you? Think of your heart the same way. Being proactive about your heart health can go a long way in warding off future issues.” Turner suggests scheduling yearly checkups including annual blood pressure, weight and BMI checks as well as heart screenings for cholesterol and blood glucose, early red flags for potential heart problems. Here are some other tips for reducing your risk of heart disease. Health History: Know your risks and talk to your family and doctor about your health history. Eat Healthy: Make healthy food choices - more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products. Eat less salt, saturated fat, and added sugar. Reduce alcohol consumption and drink more water. Move More, Sit Less: Get at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity every week, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week. Take Medications as Directed: If you take medicine to treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Always ask questions if you don’t understand something. Never stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Monitor Your Blood Pressure at Home: Self-measured blood pressure monitors (SMBPs) are easy and safe to use. Get Regular Dental Check-Ups: Dental problems can also cause heart problems. Gum disease (periodontitis) is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. Poor dental health increases the risk of a bacterial infection in the blood stream, which can affect the heart valves. HOME COOKING

Keto-Friendly Breakfast Ideas By Coast Brothers

Mom always told you breakfast was the most important meal of the day. So, we were pumped when we saw Today show co-anchor Al Roker sharing his keto-friendly low carb egg cups brimming with cooked veggies, cheese and cooked bacon or dairy-free sausage. They can be made with eggs or egg replacement. We experimented with his recipe and came up with this low-carb, quickie recipe: Beat six eggs with a splash of half and half. Fill six muffin tin cups with the egg mix. Add any cooked veggies, cheese, and cooked bacon (or plant-based meat) to the mix. Bake for 30 minutes @400 degrees. We alternated the egg muffins with blueberry and green smoothies, then went looking for more breakfast recipes that were easy on busy mornings. We discovered these breads that can be made ahead, then popped in a toaster oven with keto-friendly toppings such as poached eggs, avocado oil and red pepper flakes; unsweetened almond butter, chia seeds, cacao nibs and cinnamon; keto-friendly hazelnut spread and unsweetened toasted shredded coconut; avocado slices, sriracha, black pepper and

sea salt or hummus, cucumber and roasted garlic. So yummy and good for you. Get your food, home and office supplies delivered to your door from www.CoastBrothers.com. Breakfast Poppers 4 eggs, separated 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/4 cup (2 ounces) cream cheese, softened Directions: Preheat oven to 300°F. Line two shallow baking pans with parchment paper; set aside. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar in large bowl with electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Beat cream cheese in a bowl until smooth. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating until completely smooth. Gently fold egg white mixture into yolk mixture. Pour batter into 1/4-cup measuring cup on prepared baking sheets about 2-inches apart. Bake 25 minutes and cool.

Part of it is how you perceive your leisure time. See it as useless, and it may make you more anxious. See it as part of a larger goal, and it relieves stress. For example, sleeping in so that you are fresher for an evening meeting is a ticket to happiness. Another downtime trick? Lots of rave reviews for our favorite, Bayou Market and Café, where guests praise the chicken and sausage jambalaya, bourbon chicken, voodoo pasta with beef brisket, fried shrimp, or catfish with crawfish etouffee and shrimp/crawfish au gratin. Located on Central Avenue, there are daily specials to choose from, ordered alone or with two sides such as gouda mac n cheese, dirty rice, and spinach madeleine. Start with the seafood gumbo, jerk chicken stuffed mushrooms or conch chowder and save room for the bread pudding. Owner David Bilyeu, a Baton Rouge native with a passion for cooking (and eating), traded his corporate job to pursue his culinary dreams and opened Bayou Catering, a full-service catering company that marries outstanding Cajun, Caribbean, and Coastal food with personable service for grab and go take-out or dishes for your next party.

SPIRITS

By Nanette Wiser There’s a frozen Pencil Dick made with Grey Goose and sugar-free Red Bull and virgin sips as well. This bar is not for the faint-at-heart.

COCKTAIL ST. PETE Promising Stiff Drinks and Hard Liquor, serving up a Big Gay sing-along Thursday and Drag Shows at late night Saturday “Sissys That Walk,” this tongue-in “chic” downtown St. Pete bar serves 2-for-1 happy hour Tues.-Sat. noon-9pm and Sun. noon- 3am. COCKtail’s The Wet Spot features a new pool, pool bar and outdoor entertainment complex will be the new hotspot when it opens. You have shopped ZaZoo’d and hung out at Speakeasy, so you know these owners are hip and hilarious. The martini menu is spectacular, and the names read like a stand-up comedy act. Tea-Baggin features Earl of Grey’s sage vodka, lemon juice and honey simple syrup. Grower Not A Shower showcases Grey Goose Citron, Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice. Third Leg is my fave, a mash-up of Grey Goose Essence Watermelon Basil, Aperol, lime juice, simple syrup, and muddled cucumber.

MARDI GRAS COCKTAILS In 1875, Governor Warmoth of Louisiana signed the Mardi Gras Act, making Fat Tuesday–a day recognized predominantly by Catholics as the last day to indulge in all the food and alcohol you desire before Lent begins– a legal holiday in Louisiana, which it still is. Mardi Gras libations most enjoyed in New Orleans: Ramos Gin Fizz, a Hurricane or Sazerac. Most local tiki bars in Paradise can whip up a tasty Hurricane, and Urban Stillhouse serves a mighty fine Sazerac. The Hurricane originated in N’awlins’ Pat O’Brien’s in 1941, a mélange of rum, citrus, fruit juices sweeteners, maraschino cherries and a cocktail umbrella, served in a curvaceous glass named after the drink. The Sazerac pairs well with the traditional holiday jambalaya, the spicy rye balancing the dish’s heat. A close cousin of the Old Fashioned, the Sazerac was crowned the official cocktail of New Orleans in 2008. Made originally with French brandy Sazerac de Forge et Fils, they were concocted with Peychaud’s bitters, a bright-red concoction

with flavors of gentian and anise that was invented by New Orleans resident Antoine Peychaud. Since then, rye has replaced the brandy.

HURRICANE 2 oz. light rum 2 oz. dark rum 1 oz. lime juice 1 oz. orange juice 1/2 oz. passion fruit or mango puree 1/2 oz. simple syrup 1 tsp. Grenadine Directions: Add the light and dark rums, lime and orange juices, fruit puree, simple syrup, and grenadine into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a large Hurricane glass over fresh ice. Garnish with orange half-wheel, preserved cherry.

Taverna Costale

On the horizon are some sensational new eats including Black Cattle Burger Company in the former Grumpy Gringo, and Flip Crepes and Waffles, a dessert café is in swah-rey’s Central spot. Zoie’s Bar and Restaurant farther up Central will host drag shows when it opens. St. Petersburg-based Flying Boat Brewing Co. has been sold to King State, the popular Tampa-based restaurant, coffee roaster and small-batch (turned bigger-batch) brewer.

Celebrity Chef Fabio Viviani’s Taverna Costale on Central Avenue serves up coastal Italian fare, local seafood, fresh pasta, pizza, dry-aged steaks, and craft cocktails. This modern, upscale restaurant is perfect for parties, canoodling in the hip bar and there is even a dog-friendly patio and menu. 30

ADVENTURES IN PARADISE

Hard Rock

RAMBLE & GAMBLE Why not a Tampa staycation at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, where they host spectacular world-class concerts in the 1,500-seat venue as well as live music in the Hard Rock Café, Rez Grill, Council Oak Lounge and poolside. It’s a fantastic girls’ overnight out or special occasion date. February headliners include 2/9 38 Special, 2/11 Dean Cole, 2/17 TLC, 2/19 George Thorogood & The Destroyers, 2/21 The Jacksons, 2/24 Foghat and 2/27 The Whisperers. In March, Howie Mandel performs 3/10, followed by Wayne Newton 3/20. I personally cannot wait to see RuPaul’s Drag Race July 10!

If air travel gives you the willies, there are plenty of day-ventures and quick vacays to explore in and near Tampa Bay. It’s festival season and of course it’s time to book your hotel for Daytona Beach’s Bike Week 3/4-3/13. www.officialbikeweek.com/ Bike-Week-Calendar Busch Gardens

REBECCA PENNEYS Rebecca Penneys’ Piano Festival 2022 June 28-July 18 is their 10th anniversary season, and anticipates live performances from selected student musicians, conducted at the Barness Hall in the School of Music at USF Tampa–is the choice festival for outstanding pianists from around the world. A local and international treasure. I recently enjoyed her Legacy CD playing Chopin (one of her earliest inspirations whose music she says “lifted me into another world as the infinite beauty of the piano strings to life”). After watching her perform I understand why the New York Daily News said: “Pennys moves like a dancer, has the strength of an Olympic gymnast and plays the piano like a tamed whirlwind.” www.rebeccapenneys.com/bio ALL THAT JAZZ The 13th Annual St. Pete Jazz Festival is back 2/23-2/27 at DTSP’s Palladium Theater, thanks to David Manson, director of the non-profit EMIT, after taking a COVID hiatus last year. Showcasing primarily local and regional artists, The Palladium also hosts national artists such as the Juilliard String Quartet in March. “We continue to stay true to our mission – be an affordable, professional venue for the arts and community organizations and the artists and performers in our region,” says Wilborn, who has run The Palladium since 2007. The Palladium also supports local performers to create new shows for the venue, providing $2,500 to selected artists. In 2021, class members included jazz artists James Suggs, Nate Najar, La Lucha, Jeremy Carter; blues’ Damon Fowler; new music Elizabeth Baker; dancers/choreographers Helen Hansen French and Lauren Ree Stone and Jeremy Douglass of the Florida Bjorkestra. (The 2022 Creative Class will be announced this spring.) As a result, The Palladium is bringing back The Beacon Dance Project – French and Stone’s artistic baby – showcase with outstanding regional and national choreographers and dancers. The Palladium is also developing plans to renovate their theatrical spaces (830-seat Hough Hall now open, limited to 300-400 seats) and 181-seat Side Door Cabaret which is currently closed) as well as beautification to parking lots and exterior spaces. Says Wilborn: “This is a multi-year process, but we spent $50,000 with architects, acousticians and theatrical consultants on a overall plan that has been completed.” Best of all, The Palladium is a safe space to see live music. Beer, wine and snacks are available and masks are recommended. In addition to their parking lot, the new Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement offers a multitier parking lot $1/hour. For concerts, check PN’s events or www.mypalladium.org. In April 2022, Wilborn’s new novel will debut, Florida Hustle, set in SoFla circa 1982 where he worked, lived and played.

From chamber music to jazz, downtown St. Pete’s Palladium is the grooviest small venue in town. Closed for a full year March 2020-April 2021, Executive Director and renaissance man Paul Wilborn is thrilled with the spring/summer line-up, which he predicts will be their most financially successful year ever. Although part of St. Pete College, the theater is a stand-alone entity, supporting itself through fundraising and ticket sales.

OH MY! OBA We asked our author pal Deb Carson about two fantastic rings she was wearing. “They are by Obayana Ajanaku, who I discovered at Florida CraftArt Festival. One is amethyst and the other garnet. I love the way they look together. Oba carves the entire ring all the way around, not just on the top. Not having formal training as an artist, I was influenced in design by watching my grandmother make beautiful quilts out of old clothes when I was a boy in Texas.” He creates one-of-a-kind design jewelry. “Most of my jewelry pieces reflect memories of my childhood growing up in a small Texas town. Having very few playmates I spent time making model planes and ships and watching my grandmother create beautiful quilts out of old discarded clothes. My work reflects that process of mixing various metals, textures and stones.”

WOOING WOOD Another Florida CraftArt exhibitor, John Mascoll, is a Safety Harbor artist born and raised in Barbados. John’s father was a shipwright and carpenter who provided his initial experience in woodworking – teaching John the beauty and workability of the material and how to use finely tuned woodworking tools to develop his skills.

Obayana’s one of a kind handcrafted sculptured jewelry is fabricated using mixed metals of sterling silver, 14k and 18k gold bimetals garnished with various stones, and mokume gane (wood grained metal). His journey as a jewelry creator began in 1973 as a way to “introduce the beauty of African

Mascoll attended the University of the West Indies in Barbados and came to the U.S. on a track scholarship, earning a BA Physics and a BA Engineering and working as a construction engineer and manager before starting a new career in woodturning. In 1994, at Mainsail Art Festival, he exhibited work for the first time, winning an award, the first of many to come. “Choosing wood as a creative medium was natural for me. My father taught me, as a young boy, that wood was one of the most addicting and user-friendly materials a craftsman or aspiring artist could work with.

My earlier works explored the seemingly infinite variety of shapes and forms that allowed the natural beauty of the woof to be reflected aesthetically in the vessels created. I discovered that the natural beauty of the wood represented only one component of creative expression and was not the only criterion upon which I could base my work. I wanted to create vessels with a new spin.” In the late 1980s, Mascoll started creating wood-turned art utilizing a lathe, inspired by things that have greatly influenced his thought processes–nature, travel, family, cultural diversity, the workmanship of things made, memories and experiences of the past, artists whose works he admired, and his engineering background.

Blush Tea And Coffee

THE ART OF TEA What could be better when you’re watching February’s Winter Olympics in Beijing than a soothing cup of tea, sipped with organic honey or a dash of brandy for a hot toddy?

While caffeinated teas should be used with discretion, herbal and green teas help with many woes. Teas may boost your immune system, fight off inflammation, and even ward off cancer and lower risk for cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Fight the signs of aging with polyphenols found in tea that help boost cell turnover and reverse the signs of wrinkles, loss of moisture and skin texture. From downtown St. Pete to Gulf Beaches, you’ll discover extraordinary loose blends and teabags in divine flavors at The Spice and Tea Exchange, TeBella Tea, Blush Tea and Coffee, The Hooker Tea Co., Great American and at pop-ups such as Tea Thyme (divine cookies) and Joseph’s Tea. Or order online from Premium Steep, one of my favorite shops. 44

An opening, is an opening, is an opening. Nice things to look at, a little nosh, artists to congratulate. Fine. But the opening of “Feline,” an art show for cat lovers, really got my attention because of my fondness for cats. Plus, I was curious about the venue, Atelier de SoSi. “Where am I?” I wondered, following Google Maps’ directions down a bumpy, dark, slightly scary street. What I discovered was an array of wood, metal, glass, and found-object art in an airy, high-ceilinged space. Along with vintage cars balancing atop a glass and concrete wall. Atelier de SoSi (translation: artist workshop on the south side) is a former body shop converted into an art gallery/event center with studio spaces for working artists. It’s part of St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District, which straddles the Pinellas Trail and runs from 16th to 31st St. South between Central and 10th Ave. South. Formerly the city’s industrial hub, the district is now home to established and emerging artists. But here’s how it goes. Starving artists take over a rundown part of town. Their creativity brings the curious public and their money. Before long “artwashing” occurs, developers gentrify the area into high-end galleries and artisanal cupcake shops. Artist lofts are replaced by condos only trust-fund hipsters can afford, forcing creatives to find another rundown part of town. “We tried to break that mold by purchasing as much of the property as possible,” says Warehouse Arts District Association President Mark Aeling. Poor lighting and potholes? The association is working with the city to improve the infrastructure and make the area more inviting. “Ten years from now it will be an interesting neighborhood,” Aeling says. Oh, and the cat show? It ranged from the ho-hum to my purchase, a kitty-mermaid by Emily Shrider. She and her littermates will be on display through Feb. 19, then she’ll come to her “furever” home with me. Mr. I Got ‘Em

People may think they know Brady Johnson aka Mr. I Got ‘Em, but few know his true story. Growing up in Alberta, Alabama, right outside Selma, Brady not only witnessed but actually participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Marches, and was a part of the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. Brady’s sister, a teacher, moved to St. Petersburg in 1967 and pleaded with him to join her. Brady was completing high school when Martin Luther King was killed while leading a sanitation workers strike in April 1968. Sanitation workers were striking here too and Brady, to honor the legacy of Dr. King, came to St. Pete and applied for a job with the city of St. Petersburg sanitation department. It would take a year. In the meantime, Brady got a truck, started selling fruits and vegetables as a roving vegetable vendor in St.Pete. When the city hired him, he continued selling veggies on the weekends, and eventually was awarded spots in St. Pete where he could set up. He stayed with the city for 44 years! When the Saturday Morning Market began, Brady was there with veggies and his “perfect BBQ.” In 2007, when the Corey Ave. Sunday Market began, Brady was there, too. Brady has a love of community and is always helping out where he can. Prior to the pandemic, he spoke at local colleges, schools, and libraries about the days he marched with Dr. King. During the pandemic he continued these via Zoom. Today he is working with a history teacher from Eckerd College to have his story written for the National Archives, securing his role in American history for posterity. You can find Brady every Wednesday evening swing dancing at the Gulfport Casino and every Sunday at the Corey Ave. Sunday Market on St. Pete Beach, 10am-2pm cooking up the best ribs, pulled pork, chicken, collard greens, mac-n-cheese, corn-on-the-cob, sweet potatoes and more! GREEN THUMBS UF/IFAS Extension awarded Pinellas County Master Gardeners the 2021 Award of Excellence for Beautification and Enhancement in recognition of their volunteer garden project at Folly Farm Nature Preserve in Safety Harbor. Folly Farm Nature Preserve is an 8 ½ acre, partially wooded park that was gifted to the city of Safety Harbor in 2011 for the preservation of green space. Nine volunteer Master Gardeners began their garden project in a deteriorated section of the park in 2019: Leslie Zambito, Gary Sawtelle, Janet DeLiso, Sandy Huff, Carol Zieres, Anna Marchand, Barbara Berman, Elsa Soto and Angela Strain. Without the use of herbicides or pesticides, they have now created five gardens showcasing Florida native and friendly plants with an emphasis on butterflies and pollinators. To educate and inspire visitors of all ages, they also added signage, gnome houses, wind sculptures, seating and the “Wind Phone” for departed friends.

Now, companies are trying to eliminate single-use plastic, so do your part. Look for products that can be packaged without plastic or refillable containers. Europe is ahead of the curve, with chewable toothpaste tablets, shampoo bars and crystal deodorant. A study from Columbia University found the US recycling and composting rate sits at about 32%. In the EU, it’s closer to 46%. Some tips for using less plastic: Stop using plastic straws, use reusable produce bags, give up gum, purchase foods from bulk bins and fill a reusable container (pasta, cereal, rice), use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, bring your own container for take-out, switch to paperless billing and buy refillable products.

RAIN GARDENS The Gulfport Sustainability Committee completed work on its first rain garden at the Gulfport Recreation Center, designed and built by volunteers who will continue to water, weed, and plant the garden. Rain gardens are good for Mother Nature. They filter stormwater runoff before it enters local waterways, alleviate problems associated with flooding and drainage, recharge groundwater, and provide habitat and food for wildlife. The garden is thanks to grants Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. www.blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/pinellasco/ 2015/04/06/rain-gardens-and-you/

PET HEALTH

Dental Health When you smell your pet’s breath does it make you say “WOOF!” or “MEOW!”? This is one of the first clues that your pet’s dental health needs attention. Take a moment and (if your pet will let you) lift his or her lip and take a look at the teeth. You may notice brown to tan buildup, puffy red gums, or even notice grey or yellow colored buildup around the teeth rather than nice pearly whites. This is what is known as periodontal disease (PDD) and has many degrees of severity.

There are four grades of PDD and each is very important to address. Grade 1 is the least severe and is hallmarked by mild tartar buildup and mildly inflamed gum tissue. Grades 2 and 3 are hallmarked by having moderate to severe tartar buildup and possibly some early gingival recession. Grade 4 is the most severe where the teeth may be entirely surrounded by tartar with moderate to severe gingival recession. Unfortunately, our pets don’t brush their own teeth or floss, so bacteria build up in the mouth and on the surfaces of the teeth. Here bacteria create a protein barrier called plaque that is very hard to remove. Without brushing or some other method of removal such as chewing a hard kibble diet or chewing on hard mildly abrasive chew toys, the plaque is turned into tartar as the bacteria excrete hardening minerals from their own digestion of food particles left over in the mouth. Early prevention through brushing and having early and regular dental cleanings when signs are not severe is the

By Dr. Johnathan Pierce best way to keep your pet’s mouth healthy and prevent tooth loss. If severe enough, the dental disease will cause deeper infection, recession and bone loss around the tooth roots leading to pain and loosening of the teeth. Intervention through cleaning and removal of the affected teeth will be necessary to get rid of the infection and prevent it from spreading to other important parts of the body such as the heart, liver, or kidneys. Maintaining your pet’s oral health is key to its overall health and longevity. If you have concerns about your pet’s dental health, call your veterinarian and schedule an appointment for a dental evaluation and dentistry. “Get Sirius About Your Future”

FEBRUARY ASTROLOGY February begins a New Moon in independent, progressive Aquarius on the first day of the month. We will feel the new energy even though we are still in Mercury retrograde and in the shadow of Venus retrograde, too. This new moon will bring attention to humanitarian concerns. In close aspect to Saturn, the planet of rules and limitations, it is likely that issues involving these subjects arise. Communication planet Mercury will station direct on the 3rd, engaged with intense Pluto until mid-month. We can expect strong opinions on subjects of control, isolation, and undercover issues to come up and out. Transportation problems are also likely as well. When Mercury REenters Aquarius on the 14th, free speech and expression become important. We want logical information and truth above all else. Venus continues picking up speed in Capricorn and we remain cautious in relationships and finances. We are more practical and traditional in these areas for now. Action planet Mars is traveling with Venus all month and is not afraid to work hard for partners or possessions. These two planetary energies can achieve a lot together and enjoy every minute of it. As the month goes on the retrograde energies continue to clear. The Full Snow Moon in Leo on the 16th brings drama and romance but also a peak to the intense energy of the last two weeks. This sign has a take charge, confident attitude when addressing things, and isn’t afraid to take on the task of adjustments in the current atmosphere. We stand strong and self-assured now while using creative means to work through situations at hand. The Sun enters intuitive, compassionate Pisces on the 18th. The energy is strong in artistic areas, ready for excitement and 60

new adventures with the help of Uranus and Jupiter. If we can stay focused and practical many good things can be accomplished through the month’s end. AQUARIUS: New energy brings you structure and routines to build on. Private affairs take your energy and health issues may need attention. Partnerships are in the spotlight mid-month both personal and business. PISCES: Lucky Jupiter brings growth this year and you start with a new plan and new rules. Friends, social activities, and future dreams are on your schedule. Health is in the spotlight later and work gets you noticed. ARIES: Your career is active and you are favored by superiors. A new option opens to take charge in organizations of interest to you. Mid-month romance and children are in the spotlight. Enjoy hobbies and be creative! TAURUS: New responsibilities in your career may come with a title! You have worked for it. Travel is likely, enjoyable and with intense experiences. Mid-month home and family take center stage no matter where you are. GEMINI: A new commitment in education can bring rewards! You may receive resources, review financial plans, and make big moves. Short trips and conversations are highlighted mid-month. You live in the moment now. CANCER: A new financial path will be made as issues are addressed and accountability taken. ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones honoring my body temple, but I have to get to work!” On and on and on the cycle goes unbroken. My point is this: Is it wrong to “love” our work, recreation time, and our individual pursuits, which seem necessary to keep on keeping on? No, of course not. If anything, let’s hope we do love those things greatly but not at the expense of our core values– that which truly makes us whole.

What we love defines our lives With February being the “Love Month”,

I would like to offer you a different perspective of how love defines our lives in ways you may not have considered. To a large degree, who we are is defined by what we love. So, the quintessential question really isn’t just “who” do you love, but “what” do you love? If you take this question seriously, it will not only help you clarify what your priorities are, but it will help you see who you are. If you can remain honest with yourself, you may discover that sometimes it is appropriate to stop and recalibrate those priorities. Place them in a new order, an order that transcends the needs of the head and focuses on honoring the needs of the heart, soul, and spirit, which quite often seem to get pushed to the bottom of the priority list. While it may not always be pleasant, it is

easy to determine whether a recalibration of your priorities is in order. Take a look at what is at the center of your life. Where do you spend your precious energy and time? Where is your attention focused? This is where love actually resides. Granted, it is easy to come up with many good, logical reasons why our priorities are the way they are. I have heard them all, and frankly at times I’ve tried a lot of them too. A few prime examples might be “Without this job I spend so much of my life at, I wouldn’t be able to support my family” or “I’ve got to get out on that golf course every weekend, because I have too much stress from my job, which I spend all my time at” or “I can’t get up early enough to get to church on Sunday because it’s my only day off, and I am tired from playing golf and poker on Saturday” or “I would get to the gym and exercise, taking care of my health and

What makes us whole, really? A good place to start may be our relationships: first and foremost, the relationship we are having with life and the God of our being and, second, the relationship we are having with ourselves, our family, and our friends. The challenge we seem to face as a culture is that we tend to get caught up in the external pursuits in life, and our priorities become distorted: The doing, getting, and achieving become more important than the being; being one with God and being present with our loved ones. If this rings a familiar bell, perhaps it is time to reexamine your priorities. What do you love, really? Just look at the center, the hub of your life, and you will know. As a mindfulness practice, take out your calendar or date book right now and open it to next week’s schedule. Count the number of dates and commitments you have made that will dominate your life: This is what you love. If what you love reveals a center (or focus) with which you are happy and are pleased to call the core of your life, congratulations! If it doesn’t, don’t despair. Simply call forward the awareness that you can choose to set new priorities, beginning today. Where do you begin? Listen to your heart, it will tell you exactly what your priorities need to be. Life is quite wonderful when we honor what we love by consciously making it the center of our lives. This can never happen until we are crystal clear on our priorities. Tomorrow never comes, so do it now!
