Happy New Year! Here’s wishing all Paradise NEWS readers a year in which your new year’s resolutions are easier to keep than ever before. While our planet faces many challenges, most of our own making, we are finally reaching a consensus and have started acknowledging the issue really exists. There is encouraging news everyday about cities and companies setting goals to reduce or eliminate their “carbon footprint.” The move from fossil fuel to electric vehicles is underway. Steve Traiman’s feature story on the transportation alternatives touches on that and the ability to enjoy a vacation here without a rental car. Residents are embracing the growing options too. Caron Schwartz also writes about alternative transportation in her “Hanging Around” column. We in the sunshine state may also be able to become our own electric supplier. We made the investment in 2013 in solar panels and got an electric Chevy Volt to deliver Paradise NEWS. We have been driving on solar power for almost 10 years and highly recommend it. Electric cars are peppy, and the Volt has been fun to drive and VERY reliable. The feeling of driving on solar power is hard to beat.

Our cover story too has a transportation element this month. BITE Trolleys are the newest transport-ainment option in our readership area. This is also our “New Years” issue and our “Get Ready For Valentine’s” issue. Paradise NEWS Astrologer Sarah Lyons has two pages (twice her usual) in this issue to do a full year’s forecast for each sign. While you are browsing, you may notice the miracles Janet Nummi has performed since becoming art & production director. Nanette Wiser, our executive editor and most prolific researcher and writer, has somehow found enough going on in the area to fill eight pages with fun information you likely learned here first. There’s something for everyone, and even more for newcomers, in the next 60 pages. The Arts and Leisure section has grown under the careful eye of editor and proofreader Buddy Baker. Some of the categories are now listed only online. See the list in RED and BLUE on page 45. There is also a QR Code and a URL to help you find the page online. Speaking of online, Paradise NEWS has a robust online presence, thanks to Kaeley Dawson, our longtime online networking coordinator. She sends a digital newsletter Thursdays with things to do this weekend to a growing list of folks who subscribe for FREE on our website, www.paradisenewsfl.com. We do not share subscriber data either. Our online archives go back for eitght years, and there is an amazing depth of information throughout.

PETERSBURG With almost 50,000 students, USF’s three campuses have a $6 billion annual economic impact on the state of Florida, according to a new study. The USF St. Pete campus (USFSP) has a $442 million community impact, supporting over 13,500 jobs in the community according to a study by the Muma College of Business. USFSP is seeking $80 million in funding to build a centerpiece building on the south St. Petersburg campus. They plan to ask the state for $60 million, half in 2022 and the rest the following fiscal year. The $20 million balance is

expected to be raised from donations. St. Petersburg has invited muralists from around the world to participate in the city’s SHINE festival. Over the past seven years, the city has added 125 murals, including 19 in 2021. Though the festival has ended, the art is still up for everyone to enjoy. You don’t need a ticket to enjoy the murals. There’s so much accessibility; outdoor art like this can reach people that might not even know that they love art. To see a map of mural locations, visit them online at www.stpeteartsalliance.com. November had the highest inflation rate in years nationwide as shipping glitches increased costs for everything imported. Tampa Bay had the highest inflation in the nation at 8% over the prior year according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce recently cut a ribbon on The Goods, a new retail store located at 2939 Central Ave. Mayor Kriseman was thoroughly impressed by Margo Gilliland, a 20-year-old from Seattle who relocated to St. Petersburg to help people understand the medical benefits of the hemp plant. Margo had learned those benefits personally when her health challenges had reached a roadblock with western medicine. For further

info, call 206-898-5877 or walk in any afternoon except Tuesdays. Margo also plans to share her knowledge through a column in Paradise NEWS’ health section starting this issue. The St. Petersburg Maritime and Defense Technology Hub (Hub) is being launched in the St. Pete Innovation District. The Hub will bring together under one roof the triple helix of innovation: industry, government, and academia. It will take advantage of increased funding for maritime and technology solutions by the state and federal governments including the Department of Defense. The Hub will leverage the unique attributes of the building such as a workspace with port access, rooms designed for secure communications, and wet/ chemical laboratories. The Innovation District will curate a cluster of collaborative organizations as the subtenants in the Hub. The sub-tenant leases will be for a combination of dedicated office space and shared co-working areas. The selected sub-tenants will be aligned to the Grow Smarter and County target industries with particular attention on marine science and defense technology.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

Should I use a lawyer or title company to conduct my closing? I frequently get calls from concerned buyers and sellers, such as a couple who were under contract to purchase an expensive waterfront home. The closing was being handled by a local title company. The buyers felt uneasy wiring the huge amount of cash involved to them, so they asked if maybe they shouldn’t talk to a lawyer. As often happens, the title company assured them there was no need to do that. Wisely, they ignored that advice. They forwarded to me the scanned documents the title company had prepared. I was struck first by the fact that the top 4 inches of each and every document was cut off! The signature lines were missing on many of the documents, including the proposed deed. There was no title insurance commitment included, nor copies of the “chain of title,” i.e., the deeds preceding the current owners title. I was surprised at the number of misspellings in the documents.

12

JANUARY 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

didn’t cooperate. That would have required a complex and very expensive lawsuit to fix. Obviously, I could not advise my client to sign those documents. There were no less than a dozen corrections that I had to insist on. I examined the title. The sellers had created a family trust years ago, and had executed a deed transferring title to that trust. That deed included a clause reserving a life estate to that couple (giving them the right to possession until they both had died!). Strangely, the proposed deed for closing did not address the life estate, but rather transferred title subject to reservations of record. What this meant was that the buyers would not have been entitled to possession, i.e., they would have had no legal right to move into the house they were buying! Of course, the error would have eventually been discovered (likely long after the money had passed), but the Sellers live in South America, so it would have been nearly impossible to get the deed corrected if they

As the number of transactions increases in this strong sellers market, we see more and more closings where the documents are riddled with errors, and closing agents too busy to call back because they will be in closings today “at 2, 2:30, 3, 3:30, 4 and 4:30!” Just recently I talked to a closing agent that admitted the title search hadn’t actually been performed yet, even though we were scheduled to close the next day! I was shocked that could ever happen! Too busy to do it right is too busy to trust your affairs to. LO W- C O S T T R A N S P O R T S E R V I C E S & TO U R S A R E G U L F B E A C H E S TO U R I S T S & RESIDENTS BONUS Vacation travelers lucky enough to score accommodations in or near our Gulf Coast beach towns have a huge advantage over those in many other vacation destinations these days. While rental cars continue to be scarce all over this year, transportation alternatives around and to and from the beaches have been increasing and 2022 promises even more. The city of St. Pete Beach has a fleet of electric “FreeBees”– an app-based service that comes to you with an online link at www.freebee.com. With service originally only in Pass-a-Grille, it now operates north to 75th Avenue. For operation times and schedule, access www.ridefreebee.com/stpetebeach. If you are headed off St. Pete Beach, some places can best be reached by Beach Access Taxi Service (BATS TAXI) whose cars and SUVs are common sights. They also have an executive car division to take you to the airport, to a concert or the casino in style. For more information, call 727-367-3602 or online at www.batstaxi.com.

Dave Green created the service in 2009, designed to give back to the community and provide a safe, free transportation option for visitors and residents. It opened with just a few golf carts, serving only St. Pete Beach and Pass-A-Grille. As its popularity increased, vans were added to the fleet to meet customer needs. Soon after, the service was expanded to reach Treasure Island and Madeira Beach. Today, Free Beach Ride provides a safe, comfortable ride to guests from the south tip of Pass-A-Grille to the northern parts of Clearwater Beach. For more information, online at www.FreeBeachRide.com or call 727-776-7553. Free Island Hopper operates from 8-2am daily from Pass-A-Grille (St. Pete Beach) – mile marker 0, to 150th Ave in Madeira Beach – mile marker 9 ½, including all of Treasure Island. The service owns four 7-passenger minivans and is a free shuttle operation. It works very simply as you call 15-20 minutes in advance to 727-217-6735. Please be outside waiting at the time dispatcher tells you. Drivers work for tips only as they receive no hourly wage. More details online at www.freeislandhopper.com.

Multiple companies operate vans that will pick you up and drop you off for just a tip. Free Beach Ride and Free Island Hopper are two of them, both located in St. Pete Beach.

You can get from St. Pete Beach to downtown St. Petersburg or to Clearwater on the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority’s (PSTA) most successful routes: the Suncoast Beach Trolley and the Central Avenue Trolley. PSTA is also working with the Looper in downtown St. Petersburg and the “Jolly Trolley” from Clearwater north through Dunedin to Rusty Bellies on the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs. For all routes, operating schedule and maps, online at www.psta.net or call 727-540-1800.

Free Beach Ride operates daily 8-3am from Pass-a-Grille on St. Pete Beach north to Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, and the northern parts of Clearwater Beach. Local SPB resident

two buses that are electric per year over the next five years for a total of 60, and that really goes a long way in our plans to become truly an environmentally-friendly bus system,” said PSTA vice-chair Gina Driscoll. PSTA will pay $80 million for the buses using federal grants, and PSTA said it would become the first fully electric bus system in the state. Currently, 210 buses are in the fleet, including six all-electric and several hybrids. Quieted bus engines by the dozens will replace all diesel buses starting in 2024. PSTA also will start larger SunRunner bus service in 2022 with limited stops from downtown St. Pete to the 46th Street County beach access in St. Pete Beach.

or many other local attractions. The service offers exciting and adventurous tours that start at $35/person and day trips. Tours include but are not limited to the following: Mural Tours, Haunted St Petersburg Tour, Historical Tour of St Petersburg, Local Chocolate Factory Tour, Food Tours, Winery Tours, African American Heritage Tours of St Petersburg, Tours to Tarpon Springs, Seasonal Tours of Tampa Bay, and James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art. List of tours is at www.paradisetoursandtransportationservice.com or call 727-417-8036.

The newest trolley service in the area is as much entertainment as it is transportation – Barrier Island Transport Entertainment (BITE). Incorporated last July, it operates from John’s Pass in Madeira Beach to Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach, and downtown St. Pete. One popular route is the Dollar Loop that operates daily from noon to 9:30pm with unlimited hop on/ hop off privileges at numerous convenience stops for stores and restaurants. Patrons get aboard a beautiful green and yellow trolley with vintage style charm that takes them from John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk to the beaches of Madeira Beach, Treasure Island and Corey Avenue shops on north St. Pete Beach.

If downtown Tampa or Ybor City is your destination, check out the Cross Bay Ferry from downtown St. Petersburg. It operates Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It is funded jointly by the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa, and Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Rates are: Adult one way $10/ round trip $20; Senior (65+), Military & College Student (with ID), and Youth (ages 5-18) $8 and $16; and Children (4 years and under) Free. Full schedule is online at www.thecrossbayferry.com/st-pete-tampa.

Unlimited ride passes are available: One-day pass: $7.50/person, three-day pass: $21.00, five-day pass: $35.00, and seven-day pass: $48.00. All BITE sales are final and BITE passes are good for 12 months but are non-refundable, non-exchangeable, and non-transferable. Details at www.bitetrolley.com or phone 727-249-1868. Combining transportation and entertainment is also the business of Paradise Tours and Transportation Service who would love to take your group or family on a mural tour in downtown St. Pete

That’s a great sampling of free and low-cost transportation services for visitors and residents of our Gulf Beaches towns – an excellent variety of additional bonuses that should boost vital tourism in the years ahead. Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center Celebrating their 10-year anniversary Story by PETER ROOS Photos by J.R. St. Jean - Suncoast Photos Sonny Flynn is on a roll. Under her supervision and loving care, an old Florida-style tourist attraction has mushroomed into a indoor habitat for hundreds of residents’ exotic pets. Her answer to the shortage of rental cars during COVID-19: “Start a trolley service.” The Alligator Attraction at John’s Pass was founded in 2011. This attraction at Pinellas County’s top tourist destination was a hit with kids of all ages when all you could do was kiss a gator. Due to the immense need for animal welfare, they now serve much more than alligators. The constantly increasing demand for their care and attention changed their focus from attraction to education and conservation. This prompted them to make additions and new developments to their organization to allow them to properly treat and serve their growing collection of rescued animals. Based on the ever-changing species of animals requiring their assistance and nurturing, they formed John’s Pass Rescue in 2019. This charitable 501(c)(3) organization’s mission is to collaborate, communicate, and educate the importance of animal rescue, 16

welfare, and conservation. They strive for a world where every animal has a safe and loving forever home. In January 2020, the name was changed to Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center reflecting the changes occurring. Licensed by the US and Florida Departments of Agriculture, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the primary goal is to provide humane and professional care for pet surrenders and orphaned wildlife that cannot be returned safely to their natural habitat. The center is home to over 250 animals and aquatic life. Their animal family members come to them from various sources such as Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), wildlife and reptile rescues, and individual owners that can no longer care for their pets. Equally important, the Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center strives to provide education to the public through on-site and off-site programs about the natural history, importance of, and ways in which we can coexist with the

rich diversity of wildlife in the world. Animal care videos they presented on YouTube during the pandemic have proven so popular many people are planning to visit our barrier island destination just so kids can see the attraction for themselves. For several years, Sonny Flynn was the primary force behind the John’s Pass Seafood Festival. While the city of Madeira Beach has taken control, Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center will have a booth at the 40th Annual Festival, January 20-January 23. If you enjoy seafood, music and shopping, show your support to all that has been tremendously impacted by the pandemic. BITE Trolley As though managing the growing menagerie was not enough of a challenge, Sonny has also launched Barrier Island Trolley and Entertainment (BITE). The mission of BITE is to eliminate parking headaches, provide a fun way to get cars off the road in conservation efforts and to add an experience on our wonderful beaches. “I planned to build slowly, and to have six trolleys by the end of three years. The universe just laughed at me. It has been just six months and we already have four trolleys,” said Sonny, who seems surprisingly calm with so many balls in the air. “We have an amazing team, all of whom are as dedicated to the animals as I am. Finding qualified trolley drivers is a bit challenging in today’s employment market, but I am confident.” BITE is currently running the Sand Dollar Loop and will be adding Gator Bite and

Snake Bite routes by Feb 1. The Sand Dollar Loop route has 15 stops with over 30 restaurants and bars within walking distance. From March through August they plan to offer beverages, entertainment and live exotic rescue animals on board for photos. Gator Bite will provide entertainment from Clearwater’s Pier 60 to John’s Pass. Snake Bite will provide entertainment from John’s Pass to Downtown St. Petersburg. The Lemur Hop will transfer guests from St. Petersburg Pier to Clearwater’s Pier 60. For all the details, visit www.BiteTrolley.com. All this growth has presented challenges. “While the alligators seem perfectly healthy and happy in the indoor environment, some of our newer charges, especially the pigs, monitors and the lemur need a place to go to de-stress and get a dose of natural sunlight,” said Sonny. Their financial goal this year is to raise funds for a down payment for at least an acre of land to accommodate the animals that require more natural sunlight. This ‘farm’ needs to be in Pinellas County and be zoned for “hoofstock.” “How can you help?” you ask. Kiss A Gator Black Tie Gala On Saturday, February 19, John’s Pass Rescue will host their first annual ‘Kiss A Gator Black Tie Gala’ from 7pm-11pm at the Don Cesar Beach Resort & Spa. They are actively soliciting silent auction items, sponsors and angels willing and able to pay $175/person to attend the event. If your budget allows, please plan to join us at the gala, or donate generously to help this local, worthy cause. ParadiseNewsFL.com | JANUARY 2022

Florida Wine Shop The Bronze Lady

John’s Pass Village by Nanette Wiser

Created by a hurricane on September 27, 1848, Pirate John LeVeque made the first passage through the newly created pass. Today, this quaint turn-of-the-century fishing village in Madeira Beach features 100+ shops, eateries, bars, attractions and a local fishing fleet, dolphin watching and shelling tours, boat rentals, parasailing and jet skiing. There’s metered on-street and multi-level garage parking. PN’s Cover Story showcases one of the most popular attractions, The Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center. The Village may get “wet zone” status, where people can carry their alcoholic beverages on the public right of way in 2022. And the Bell Tower may be enlarged, and a permanent main stage installed to create a gathering place in John’s Pass. Also on the horizon January 20-23, the Village hosts the annual John’s Pass Seafood Festival’s 40th anniversary which includes Flavors of the Gulf Beach. Here are some of our faves: EAT/DRINK Bring home a tasty treat from The Beef Jerky Outlet or The Spice & Tea Exchange. Cuban Paradise Cigar and Café or Addicted to the Bean serve java and treats. Thirsty tourists love Mad Beach Brewery’s crafts and fare as well as Florida Wine Shop. Hungry? For seafood, stop in at Friendly Fisherman, Sculley’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company or Walt’z Fish Shak. For sports and chicken wings, Hooter’s is the spot while pizza lovers can indulge at DeLosa’s Pizza. Wherever you dine, save room for dessert at Kilwin’s on the Boardwalk for the very best Ice cream, handmade fudge and specialty chocolates, which make great Valentine gifts. Resolve To Treat Your Family to the BEST Ice Cream, Fudge and Hand-Made Chocolates!

"Her treatments got me back on the golf course."

“I hurt my back playing golf. I went to the chiropractor. I went to the pain institute. I went to the spine institute. Nothing helped. The pain was debilitating, I went six or seven months without playing.” Chronic pain makes everyday life incredibly difficult. It prevents you from participating in activities you once loved and simple daily tasks like grocery shopping become nearly impossible. This was the case with John R of South Pasadena. John would go on to explain that on a scale of one to ten his pain was well over a nine every single day. Regardless of your age, back pain, whether caused by a sports injury, longstanding arthritis or even specific conditions like scoliosis, can severely impact the quality of your life. In short, it stops you from doing the things you love with the people you love and that’s not a great way to live. On top of that, general practitioners, specialists and surgeons are all too eager to prescribe medications whose side effects are often detrimental to your recovery or recommend invasive surgeries that often have less than desirable outcomes. Fortunately for the people of St. Petersburg, Dr. Rebecca Gibbons and her team at Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine have pioneered non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical innovative medical solutions that actually treat your pain! “My patients are also people who would normally require surgery but would either have a difficult time going under the knife or have simply decided that they would rather explore other options. There is more to healthcare than prescription pills, elimination diets and scalpels,” shares Dr. Gibbons. “By offering several integrative therapies we are able to combat your pain from several angles ensuring the best possible outcome.”

John easily attested to this claim. “I highly recommend her to anybody. I am very thankful that I met Dr. Gibbons and she was able to help me because I can play golf again!” Each new patient that comes to AAIM receives a comprehensive consultation and then is prescribed a very personalized treatment program that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. “While every treatment I perform is based on a framework cultivated from years of education and experience, no two cases are the same and so every person under my care is treated that way," tells Dr. Gibbons. One of the modern medical solutions Dr. Gibbons offers is O3 Regenerative Therapy™ which uses prolozone, a technique that involves injecting a solution of natural anti-inflammatory medications, vitamins and ozone into degenerated or injured joints, and into areas of pain. It’s with these injections that John found himself back on the green. "Unlike other solutions to chronic pain, O3 Regenerative Therapy™ corrects the pathology of the problem, allowing the body to heal itself naturally. This is a wonderful alternative to more traditional methods and incredibly safe and highly successful.” Dr. Gibbons and the team at AAIM are using O3 Regenerative Therapy™ to treat a myriad of chronic pain issues including neck pain, arthritis, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, chronic injuries and so much more! LIVE LIFE BETTER

REINVENT YOURSELF More people are finding less meaning and purpose from their jobs; in fact 4.3 million U.S. workers quit their jobs in August 2021. It’s being called The Great Resignation, but is it really The Great Reinvention? PN spoke to many of the market vendors, new to their enterprise after corporate life and remote work. PourDecisionsCoffee.com at Madeira Market, for example, left Netflix and traded his tech job for smoking sustainable coffee beans and creating teas. Whatever you dream you can do, begin. Switching careers is the future of work. Set goals, define what you want to do, practice and learn new skills and surround yourself with people who tell you the truth and can mentor you. RELATIONSHIPS Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and love is top of mind. But the key to a great relationship is not just chocolates and roses. Laughter and listening are key. Here are some of the tips we gleaned: Keep expectations realistic. No one can be everything we might want them to be. Talk with each other. Calm, honest communication is essential to healthy relationships. Be flexible and fight fair. Keep your life balanced and take care of yourself, too. Be dependable, supportive and build trust, the bedrock of a lasting relationship. Keep the spark alive, with a hug, kind word or the joy of engaging in a new hobby or booking a couples’ massage.

BREATHE EASY After this summer’s red tide, no one takes breathing more seriously than us. Keep your lung function healthy with aerobic exercises or walking, eat more fruits/veggies and open your windows for fresh air. You can improve indoor air with a HEPA filter purifier, especially at night in your bedroom. And test your home for radon which can be found in well water or in walls and foundations. HEALTH & WELLNESS

MOVING & GROOVING Get off the couch and move on down the road this January with a practical and fun fitness and wellness plan. Whether it’s 15 minutes or an hour, motion is lotion for the joints and good for the brain and heart. By 2060, almost a quarter of the U.S. will be 65+. Older adults are at higher risk for chronic health problems like diabetes, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, 1 in 3 older adults fall each year, and falls are a leading cause of injury for this age group. Physical activity can help older adults prevent both chronic disease and fall-related injuries. It also improves their daily quality of life, physical function, and the ability to perform activities of daily living. Despite the many benefits, less than 14 percent of adults age 65 years and older met the recommendations for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity.

skipped the gym, but many discovered the joys of walking, biking, and dancing at home to YouTube videos from hip hop to Zumba. With the warm weather in Paradise, there are dozens of outdoor opportunities, even exercise classes and yoga at the beach. Paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing with friends or taking a surf or body boarding class revs up your metabolism and swimming is my personal favorite exercise. WOMEN’S HEALTH January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. More than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, a fact made even more frustrating because disease is virtually always preventable with vaccination and appropriate screening (Pap and HPV tests). Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes about 91% of cervical cancers. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer for women worldwide, but

Low impact activities like swimming, tai chi, yoga, and Pilates are especially beneficial for seniors. For many, Silver Sneakers offers hundreds of classes online as well as free gym memberships at the Y and other gyms. With COVID precautions, people of all ages

because it develops over time, it is also one of the most preventable types of cancer. Deaths from cervical cancer in the United States continue to decline by approximately 2% a year. This decline is primarily due to the widespread use of the Pap test to detect cervical abnormalities and allow for early treatment. Most women who have abnormal cervical cell changes that progress to cervical cancer have never had a Pap test or have not had one in the previous three to five years. Cervical cancer tends to occur during midlife. It is most frequently diagnosed in women between the ages of 35 and 44. It rarely affects women under age 20, and more than 15% of diagnoses are made in women older than 65. But in women over 65, cancer typically occurs in women who were not receiving regular screening. www.cdc.gov/cancer/cervical/ basic_info/index.htm

Keto-Friendly Valentine’s Day Treats By Coast Brothers

until crisp. Let stand for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

With that in mind, whip up these easy keto snacks and desserts for your sweetheart. We like using dark chocolate when possible, a rich source of minerals and antioxidants. Strawberry season in Florida yields luscious, ripe berries. For our snack, a keto diet perk is that cheese is a good choice: high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb when used in moderation. Keto Cheesy Crisps 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1 TB ranch dressing seasoning mix Directions: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place a silicone mat or parchment paper onto each of two baking sheets. In a bowl, mix the cheese with the seasoning mix. Drop the cheese into small flattened piles (about 20 total), making sure they don’t touch. Bake for about 6-8 minutes,

Keto Chocolate-Covered Strawberries 24 large strawberries with stems 1 cup keto dark chocolate chips Directions: Wash strawberries and pat dry. Add chocolate to a small glass bowl. Microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring in between until chips melt. Holding the stem, dip the strawberry into the melted chocolate, then place on wax paper until hardened. No-Bake Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter 1 cup coconut oil ½ cup natural peanut butter 2 TB heavy cream 1 TB cocoa powder 1 tsp liquid stevia ¼ tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp salt 1 oz chopped roasted salted peanuts Directions: Melt coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in peanut butter until smooth. Whisk in heavy cream, cocoa powder, liquid stevia, vanilla extract and salt. Pour chocolate-peanut butter mixture into 12 silicone muffin molds.

Sprinkle peanuts evenly on top. Place molds on a baking sheet. Freeze chocolate-peanut butter mixture until firm, at least 1 hour. Unmold chocolate-peanut cups and transfer to a resealable plastic bag or airtight container. ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS ALL CDC GUIDELINES FOLLOWED, PLUS SOCIAL DISTANCING

NATURAL WELLNESS by Margo Gilliland

Healing With Hemp Hey there St. Pete! I’m Margo, a St. Petersburg native. I am so excited to announce that I have just opened my first business, The Goods, centrally located to Paradise NEWS readers at 2939 Central Ave. The Goods specializes in CBD, hemp and anxiety relieving gifts. I have an immense amount of knowledge I am happy to share about the endocannabinoid system and cannabis’ healing properties. As a child and into my adolescence, I constantly struggled with paralyzing episodes of anxiety and depression. In spite of countless doctor and specialist visits, nothing seemed to relieve the physical pain that came from my poor mental health. After moving to Seattle, where cannabis has been used as medicine more commonly, a doctor recommended a CBD tincture that ended up changing my life completely. In addition to therapy and a psychiatrist, I found cannabis provided relief I had never felt before. Chances are you know someone who has had great success calming their pet’s anxiety over cars or fireworks with cannabis products designed just for them. Perhaps you have questions about how you can see if products like these can help you get a better night’s sleep, or help you deal with pain or anxiety. By the way, you do not need to get a medical marijuana card from the state of Florida to purchase or use any of the products sold at The Goods, but if you are a cardholder, you are welcome here. I cannot wait to share my experience and knowledge with you in the coming months. I am very excited to be back in St. Pete, bringing relief to the community with my high-quality, lab-tested products. There is no place I would rather be as I start my entrepreneurial journey. Come in and say “Hi” to me and Oliver, my shop dog, at The Goods, 2939 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 33713. Questions? Call us at 727-289-6020, email me at margo@thegoodsfl.com or visit us online at www.thegoodsfl.com. Mention that you read my article in Paradise NEWS for 10% off your entire first order. “Because we believe relief is a need.” 26

DINING SWEET SENSATIONS Paciugo Gelato Café

CANDY SHOPS From jellybeans to fudge, ice cream to retro candies (Pez!), you can find it all in Paradise. Check out House of Sweets, the legendary Candy Kitchen, and DTSP’s Rocket Fizz, more a candy and soda museum of edible delights than just a shop. I love the Dr. Pepper Cotton Candy and Jelly Bellies. Cool off at Sprinkles Ice Cream Shop, Uptown Snowballs & Ice Cream, Sweet Stack Shack and Urban Creamery, where the dessert waffles and milkshakes are superb. If you love Hawaiian treats, order up shaved ice in tropical flavors.

COOKIES To market, to market for a cookie I go, especially Corey Avenue Sunday and Downtown Saturday markets. So many gluten free options, including DTSP’s HaleLife Bakery’s gluten-free and vegan options. New in Seminole City Centre is Crumbl Cookies for the Churro, a crisp cookie rolled in cinnamon sugar and topped with a swirl of cinnamon buttercream frosting and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar or Le Macaron French Pastries in Tyrone.

PASTRIES/CAKES Our publisher Renee’s favorite is the flourless Gateau Au Chocolat crafted by Emmanuel Roux. Best of show for pastries and cakes is Astoria Pastry Shop and Frida’s Café & Bakery, where the German chocolate cake is divine. For sending gifts, I adore Nothing Bundt Cake minis (pecan, lemon, red velvet), customized for holidays and occasions. New to DTSP this fall is the pretty in pink The Cake Drip, and nearby is Valhalla Bakery whose new red velvet beer has me swooning. The Wandering Whisk’s pop-up shops feature holiday flavors, and her macarons and wedding cakes are out of this world.

CHOCOLATE/TRUFFLES Let’s start with William Dean’s chocolate bars and painterly truffles in sublime color and flavors; the cherry vanilla is perfect for Valentine’s Day. Coco Addiction serves artisan chocolates (coffee, passionfruit) as well as cheesecakes and pastries. Kilwin’s ice cream, chocolate dipped apples, fudge and dark chocolate espresso beans are incredible.

FROZEN CONFECTIONS From Yogurt City to DTSP’s Clara Rose Ice Cream truck’s ice cream sandwiches and marvelous flavors, you’re sure to get brain freeze while taste testing them all. In addition to Hyppo’s festive gourmet ice pops in kooky flavors, we love Bright Ice’s small batch ice creams (coffee toffee, key lime) and a Mango Misto at Rita’s Italian Ice. For gelato (and sorbet), head over to Paciugo Gelato Caffe and Mamma Mia Gelato. Beans & Barlour’s boozy desserts and coffees is my go-to happy place.

Hyppo Gourmet Pops

Let’s make Valentine’s Day a weekly event with a sugarplum or two. From downtown St. Pete to Gulf Beaches, sweet shops are popping up featuring candy, cookies, cakes, gelato, icees and heavenly desserts. Check Facebook for hours and trendy concoctions.

Will FUNGI Save Planet Earth? by Peter Roos | Photos courtesy Fantastic Fungi We recently watched a movie called “Fantastic Fungi” for the third time. The first time was at its public debut in a high school auditorium in Telluride, Colorado, on August 15, 2019. It was the first night of the 38th annual Mushroom Festival that is held there annually on the middle weekend of August. The auditorium was full of appreciative mycologists and lay enthusiasts. The second time was a sparsely attended showing at the spectacular Tampa Theater. If we had had some notice it was coming, we’d have told you to go see it. The third was a recent viewing on our television at home. It is currently available on the most popular streaming sites, and we suggest everyone watch it. The director of this spectacular documentary, Louie Schwartzberg, is an award-winning time-lapse photographer and cinematographer who was inspired at Telluride’s 25th Mushroom Festival to produce the definitive movie about the role of mushrooms in the world. He spent 13 years doing so. The film reflects a belief espoused by many mycologists at the festival, that “Fungi Could Save Our Planet,” if we just give them a chance. Mushrooms, perhaps the most easily recognizable forms of fungi, have been hailed as the latest super foods, while some experts have said fungi may even have the potential to save the world from humanity’s worst excesses. Such discoveries are yet another reminder of how our planet’s biodiversity is essential for the health and well-being of everything on it. Fungi are often described as being the “fifth kingdom of life on earth” – they are neither plant nor animal, microbe nor protozoa. Their spores can survive extreme temperatures, radiation, and even outer space: in 1988, Russian cosmonauts 34

noticed that something was growing on the outside of the Mir space station’s titanium quartz window – and eating through it. It was a fungus. Fungi live everywhere: in water, on trees, in the soil, in the air – and on and in our bodies. Scientists have begun to appreciate how important the tiny, microscopic organisms – including fungi – that live on our skin and in our gut are to our health. Studies of the so-called microbiome have mostly concentrated on bacteria, but experts now think the fungal equivalent – the mycobiome – may play an important role in our immune system’s health. Mushrooms taste great but are digestible only if cooked. Cooking releases essential nutrients we need for a healthy life, including protein, vitamins B, C and D, and selenium (which helps prevent cancer). They are a good source of iron, copper, riboflavin, niacin and contain dietary fiber. A portobello mushroom can contain more potassium than a banana. Both edible and inedible fungi have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, used Fomes fomentarius, a woody species found on trees, to cauterize wounds; Calvatia gigantea, or giant puffball, was used by Native Americans to stem bleeding. Penicillium, a group of molds (a type of fungi), formed the basis of penicillin, a drug that has saved countless lives since it was developed in the late 1920s. A tree fungus has been hailed as a possible defense against biochemical weapons, including smallpox and anthrax. Known as Laricifomes officinalis when found on larch trees and Fomitopsis officinalis when on Douglas fir, spruce and hemlock, it is resistant to influenza viruses. The prime job of most fungi is to sustain the natural world. Along with bacteria, fungi are important as decomposers in the

soil food web. They convert organic matter that is hard to digest into forms other organisms can use. Their strands – or hyphae – physically bind soil particles together, which helps water enter the soil and increases the earth’s ability to retain liquid.

Fungi could even help to save our world from pollution. Certain species, such as the oyster mushroom, produce enzymes that digest the hydrocarbons in petroleum. Some can absorb heavy metals like mercury and even digest polyurethane plastics. Scientists are also experimenting to see if certain types of fungi might be able to absorb radiation after nuclear disasters. In 2017, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Kunming Institute of Botany found a fungus that could potentially help us to address the problem of non-biodegradable plastics. The fungus is able to break down waste plastics in a matter of weeks that would otherwise persist in the environment for years. Aspergillus tubingensis is typically found in soil, but the study found that it can also thrive on the surface of plastics. It secretes enzymes which break down the bonds between individual molecules and then use its mycelia to break them apart.

The movie also touches on the likely role of psilocybin mushrooms in human development and current psychological applications of “tripping” on mushrooms. They have found serious depression can be relieved with a single session. We suggest the film for everyone. Growing mushrooms is low tech and very green. We should all be eating more mushrooms and less red meat. Make it a new year’s resolution. If you are shopping locally for edible mushrooms, Spiro’s market in South Pasadena usually has at least five varieties. The MD Market at Park Blvd. and 49th St., a supermarket-sized oriental grocery store, has a substantial produce department with some hard-to-find items. at the end of January, small venues for live music downtown need your support!

In the late 90s, Greg Haddad, a fifthgeneration St. Petersburg native, opened Central Cigars on a very vacant Central Avenue. We started as a cigar store where patrons could enjoy cigars from St. Petersburg’s largest selection of premium cigars and accessories instead of having to make the trek to Tampa. In the early 2000s, a small coffee lounge area was added adjacent to the cigar retail area for patrons to enjoy a cigar and relax. In the mid-2000s, we added a beer and wine bar which evolved into a full-liquor bar in front with the back storage area turning into “The Havana Room”, a large lounge area with over-stuffed leather couches and chairs. In 2011, we finally became our latest iteration, “Central Cigars and Ruby’s Elixir”, amidst growing demand for live music. Central Cigars still boats the largest selection of cigars and accessories in the St. Petersburg area and Ruby’s Elixir is the only smoking-friendly live music lounge with a full-liquor bar. In other philanthropic news, Beth and John England were honored for their gift to the Ruth Eckerd Hall “Expanding the Experience” Capital Campaign. In recognition of the donation, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s reimagined outdoor multi-use space located on the east side of Ruth Eckerd Hall, has been named The England Family Music Garden. By Caron Schwartz work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and the Roman Baroque period (c. 1600-1700). Working for popes and princes, Bernini was one of the brightest luminaries in the history of art. Reflecting artistic energy that pulsated throughout Europe and inspired architects, artists, and urban planners across the globe, Bernini and the Roman Baroque embodies the magnificence and innovation that transformed Rome into the capital of the art world for centuries to come.Feb. 12May 8 at the Museum of Fine Art in St. Pete.

A conservation project undertaken by experts at the Rijksmuseum on the institution’s most famous painting, Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, has revealed a previously unknown preparatory sketch hidden beneath

the masterpiece. The project, which involved 30 conservators working for three years, has led to the discovery of several changes the artist made during his painting process. “It is fascinating to see Rembrandt searching for the right composition,” said Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits.

The Warehouse Arts District Association (WADA) kicks off the new year with a wide variety of art classes hosted at their new facility, The Pruitt Arts Education Center on the ArtsXchange Campus. For kids age 8 to 14, the Aresty School for Young Artists offers multisensory and multidisciplinary artmaking from Sustainable Art to Stop Motion Animation after school, on weekends, and during spring and summer breaks. For more information and to register for classes, visit www.warehouse artsdistrictstpete.org. What’s the earliest memory you have of the creative freedom of art? Perhaps it’s the smell of a new box of crayons or the squish of clay between your fingers. A blank sheet of paper, a ball of clay, and a world of possibilities. Those possibilities are still there inside you, and

the Dunedin Fine Art Center wants to help you realize them. While DFAC offers instruction in traditional arts, such as drawing, painting, and pottery, you’ll also find exciting offerings in digital imaging, fashion design, jewelry, metal-working, stone-carving, and wood-turning to name a few. The easiest path to the catalog and registration is www.dfac.org or 727-298-DFAC. Dunedin Fine Art Center, 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin

WHAT’S HOT

By Nanette Wiser

KIDS & FISHING Reel in your little Captain Nemo with a visit to the popular Kids’ Fishing Clinic, presented by the non-profit Hook the Future. Presented by Captain Don Dingman, who has a cable TV show and donates his time to help children learn to fish, the program taking place at the St. Petersburg Powerboat and Sailboat Show Jan. 20-23 is for children ages 4-16. Want to be on a future show: Send name, age, address, and parent’s contact number to captdon@hookthefuture.com; names are drawn eight weeks before the shoot. Drawing thousands of boating enthusiasts and sailing lovers to the downtown waterfront, the 44th Annual St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show is at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts Mahaffey Theater–Yacht Basin and Albert Whitted Park (next to the Dali Museum). In Pinellas County, there are many opportunities to introduce a child to the joy of fishing. Kids’ Fishing Clinics are one-day educational events established by the Outreach and Education section of the Division of Marine Fisheries Management, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Also check out specialty camps at the Y and the non-profit organization Take A Kid Fishing. www.takffl.com ADOPT A FUR-BABY The ultimate romance in 2022? You and Fido or Fifi. Adopting a pet is preferable to buying one online or from a pet store; in fact, Pinellas County has put a moratorium on opening any new pet stores in the county in 2022. You can foster a pet as well. A rescue pet is the ultimate love story. Pet rescue organizations help match the pet to your home, your personality, background and medical history as well as helping you decide if adding a second (or third!) pet is a good match. Check out The Humane Society of Pinellas, SPCA Tampa Bay, Fluff Animal Rescue, Friends of Strays, Pinellas County Animal Services, Safe Paws and the cornucopia of rescue dogs by breed (pit bull, greyhound). Ready to adopt? Don’t make a quick decision, think about your schedule, and time commitment. Don’t rush introductions and learn as much as you can about the fur-baby that caught your eye. Make sure to get a wellness check in, choose a good vet and kitten/puppy proof your home. If you can, think about adopting an older animal and you’ll skip the potty-training headaches. Finally ask yourself what you want? An exercise companion? A cuddler? Then find the perfect match for your heart’s desire. 44

FERRIES, STREETCARS AND AUTOMOBILES We Gulfportians rarely leave our enclave, much less venture off the Pinellas peninsula. So, when visiting sister and brother-inlaw wanted to take in the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa, the drive seemed daunting. “Ooh, we could take the ferry,” said Sis, looking up from her phone. Next thing I knew I was parking in the Sundial garage, where the Cross Bay Ferry validates parking. A five-minute walk later we were boarding the Provincetown III at the Vinoy Basin. Sis had pre-booked the tickets online, a must, since the 149-seat vessel usually sells out. We explored a bit, checking out the seating, restrooms, and full-service bar. Sis and Bro sat in the stern to watch St. Pete fade into the distance while Boyfriend and I ventured to the bow to better enjoy the “bounding main.” Hardly. Tampa Bay was calm, and the catamaran provided a smooth ride. Ninety minutes later we disembarked at the Tampa Ferry Terminal, adjacent to the Tampa Convention Center. After stopping for sustenance at a nearby Starbucks, we enjoyed a half-hour stroll along the Tampa Riverwalk to the museum. Once inside, however, Boyfriend and I decided it was too nice a day to spend it inside. We had noticed the TECO Streetcar stop near the terminal and thoughts turned to lunch in Ybor city. We caught the free ride on Whiting St. prepared for another transportation adventure. When technical difficulties caused an indeterminant stop at Publix Station, however, lunch in Ybor became a search for food in the Channel District. Google provided directions to the nearby Pour House where we shared a craft brew and nachos. Then Lyft got us to the terminal on time. Safely back in St. Pete, we meandered to the Vinoy for drinks on the veranda. Meet Ceci & Wolf of Vegan Sunshine Ceci, originally from the Philippines, lived in North Conway, New Hampshire, growing up from the late ‘70s. She was born to bake. When a new bakery opened in town in 2000, it became Ceci’s hangout. “It was so much fun there and the menu was always changing from croissants to wedding cakes,” Ceci recalled. She began assisting during holidays as well as delivering wedding cakes to small towns far off the beaten path. Wolf, a trained pastry chef from Maine, owned the bakery. Ceci & Wolf took an art class together and a romance ensued. They renovated a building in town with the hope of opening a bakery and gallery in Maine gearing up for a summer 2017 opening. In Jan. 2017 they took a break from the snow and came to St. Pete Beach. They happened upon the Corey Avenue Market. The minute they arrived they felt home. The sense of community, sunshine, blue skies and smiles told them this was the place to be. Returning to Maine, they sold their almost renovated property and returned a month later to the sunshine to begin selling fruit-filled pastries and cake slices at the Corey Avenue Sunday Market. They realized by listening to requests from customers that there was a big demand for vegan. Ceci, being vegan herself, had a recipe box full of tried and tested treats and they began offering donuts…vegan, gluten free donuts that are really like a small cake – perfect to slice and serve. Here we are in January 2022 and Vegan Sunshine is a permanent part of the market community serving their vegan, gluten free goods – and this year the flavors being added will amaze you! Look for additions like Black Forest Cake Donut, Fruit Tart Donut, and the surprises will keep coming. Find their booth–located on Blind Pass just south of Corey Ave., every Sunday 10am-2pm. BEAR CONSERVATION: Eight Eckerd College students from Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Ray Ball’s wildlife rehab class, a course in the Animal Studies major, made the 90-minute drive to Homosassa on Nov. 9 to watch, learn and lend a hand–with bears. “They went with me on my rounds,” Ball says of the trip to Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, about 85 miles north of St. Petersburg along the Gulf Coast. On this visit, a researcher from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was working on a method to attach a radio transmitter to the three sleeping cubs while Ball was monitoring them. “My role was to maintain a safe level of anesthesia, perform a health evaluation and collect blood samples for health analysis,” he says.

By Nanette Wiser

FLIP MY FLORIDA YARD: Eckerd College volunteers were part of the TV production crew on, Emmy® award–winning director Chad Crawford’s home improvement show designed to demonstrate how homeowners can create a landscape that is more in tune with Florida’s natural environment by using drought-tolerant plants and water-saving techniques. Regional landscapers were tasked with removing existing flora and replanting an entirely new front and side yard for a corner-lot home in just eight hours. Eight students and Farm Manager Jon Prieto from the Eckerd College Community Farm lent a helping hand. TAMPA BAY WATCH: Scientists with the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) recently released the results of their 2020 seagrass mapping study showing that between 2018 and 2020, Tampa Bay has lost approximately 16% of our seagrass habitat for a total that is a 10-year low of 34,297 acres. It is believed that this could be the result of a wetter rainfall pattern that we have seen over the last couple of years that is resulting in the

greater availability of nutrients in the bay which has caused some die-offs. Another cause is a greater abundance of attached algae which can be out-competing seagrass. What can you do to help? • Consider native plants instead of grass and don’t use fertilizer in summer. • Volunteer and/or support Tampa Bay Watch. • Contact your elected officials at the local and state level.

PET HEALTH knocking at the cell’s door, waiting to come in. This door is always locked and needs insulin to act as the key to open it. If the door cannot be unlocked, then the sugar waits in the blood stream and never gets absorbed.

Happy New Year!! Diabetes is a disease that we commonly associate with people, however, did you know that your canine and feline pets can develop this disease? Diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes and is characterized by a persistent increase in blood sugar, due to the lack of or resistance to insulin. So what is insulin? It is a hormone (produced in the pancreas) that is responsible for telling the cells of the body when to burn sugar for energy. Think of the sugar as someone

As the sugar builds up in the system, it will be released into the urine as excess and waste. This is what causes the very characteristic insatiable thirst and urination. Water follows the sugar out into the urine in very large amounts, increasing the pets desire to drink to replace the losses. Because the body is having such a difficult time absorbing the sugar it will start to seek out other non-sugar sources of fuel such as fat and protein, causing weight loss. This can start to accelerate as the diabetes worsens. The more fat reserves are broken down, waste products, called ketones, can build up. This is what causes diabetic keto acidosis (DKA). This can result in vomiting, lethargy, or inappetence and requires emergency intervention and possibly hospitalization.

By Dr. Johnathan Pierce Whenever diabetes goes unchecked, the sugar can cause cataract formation. Sugar is absorbed into the lenses of the eyes, where it is changed into sorbitol. The sorbitol crystallizes, increasing the opacity and density (whitening / bluing) of the lenses, creating cataracts. Early warning signs are increased thirst and urination. If you notice these, or any vomiting, lethargy, and change in appetite, please take your pet to your veterinarian. “Get Sirius About Your Future”

NEW YEAR’S FORECAST 2022 Happy New Year, Everyone! 2022 has begun but instead of charging right out of the gate to start new goals, the celestial patterns are more inclined to have us REthink and REvise our plans! Venus will be REtrograde until January 29th, for love, values, and money REsets. Mercury REtrogrades on January 14th, for REleasing and REconsidering before we jump into new endeavors. Eclipses come in spring, then later in the fall joined by a Mars REtrograde. Pisces and Aries enjoy the expansion of Jupiter this year. The RE energy will also be seen on a global level as we attempt to REgain some certainties and stability in our lives. But, it’s best to keep going with the flow and adapt as needed to the changes coming our way. So, plan well but be ready for anything in this highly aspected year! CAPRICORN: Venus favors you until February ends, increasing popularity and charm! You also have high energy from Mars until then, but watch the budget in March. Jupiter keeps you on the go with short trips and many communications until May; then home life and family see growth and enjoy opportunities until the fall. Eclipses focus on your love life, children, goals, and friendships this year. Attractions can be exciting and fun, but unstable. Saturn is keeping you focused on finances and you will receive and pay on a karmic level this year; clearing up loose ends. Neptune continues to stimulate your imagination and intuition with art and literature being good outlets. Pluto the great transformer is still quietly bringing the 60

development you need into your life as it eliminates the old, clearing way for the future. AQUARIUS: Mercury retro in your sign begins your year with a review. A focus on health and private matters to help you put the year in perspective. Saturn in your sign all year keeps bringing karmic rewards and debts to be paid. March brings both popularity from Venus and high energy from Mars! Jupiter may increase income but bring a tendency to spend especially in April. Eclipses affecting your home and family area begin in May and will reoccur in the fall. Expect a few surprises and a change in career or status may also occur this year. The last half of the year interest in learning and travel or short trips are likely. You are easy-going and daily life keeps you busy. Neptune has been bringing a stronger value to spiritual matters and helping others just be sure to help yourself first and watch out for pitfalls. PISCES: Lucky Jupiter is in your sign until May then returns in the fall bringing growth and opportunities your way! Travel and education are likely but watch for excess or over-extending yourself. April brings high energy and favorable vibes; with enhanced income possibilities in May. The time spent alone may be creative but too much isolation will lead to mental stress. Eclipses activate your travel, education, and communication areas in spring and fall. Breakthroughs in areas that have held you back come through learning and opening your mind. Siblings may be unpredictable. Friends and friendships may undergo

complete transformations. Let go of anyone or group that is not in your best interest. You are still in the phase of finding a new path or new identity, keep reimagining yourself; be patient. ARIES: Your year begins focused on career and position rethinking your goals! Should you go out on your own? March will be a social month with professionals or personal friends that may require commitments. You have great protection this year and from May through October when Jupiter enters your sign, growth and opportunities will be yours! May will also bring favor from Venus and your Mars energy kicks in the last week. Eclipses fall in the financial sector with changes in resources and values ongoing. A sudden windfall or expense is likely and income is erratic. Your alone time may be spent creatively and on much needed recharging and self-care. You feel more in charge of your life this year and ready to look ahead with confidence. Reconnecting in relationships for clarity will be beneficial. TAURUS: Travel adventures may have setbacks until March; go with the flow. Letting go of old beliefs may be a resolution for this year. In March you are popular with superiors in professional and personal life; plus you have the drive to excel in your career or status! April is more about social activities with an interest in groups or organizations resulting in mutually beneficial opportunities! The wild card planet Uranus continues to shake up your world with the unpredictable! Eclipses join this planet in your sign this year with both the spring and

SCORPIO: Everyday life, conversations, and short trips bring intense moments and transformation on deep levels; reconnect and resolve. Wellness and relating are front and center all year as you take care of yourself and important partners. Allow individuality and adapt to the many changes. Children should do well this year but don’t worry about uncertainties; intuition and creativity will help guide them and yourself as well. SAGITTARIUS: The new year has you reviewing finances and planning for expenses and this area continues to experience upheaval. By March you are ready for a short trip and connecting to others but doing so may be for obligations. There may be an increase in the family this year; redecorating at home, too, with April highlighted! It’s a good time to visit relatives up until May then again in the fall; misunderstandings may continue but aren’t charged. May until October enjoy time with children, love life, and creative projects. Eclipses are bringing necessary changes to your workplace or job itself. Expect sudden developments in both spring and fall. Health issues may arise suddenly or breakthroughs come through alternative wellness.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

Holding On To Resentment Only Holds You Hostage “You can’t have a harmonious relationship and hold on to your resentment, too. You can’t hold on to your anger and bitterness and still have a healthy heart and a settled stomach.” ~ Eric Butterworth Have you noticed? Lately, there seems to be a LOT of toxic emotional energy floating through people’s minds and hearts. To deal with the negative energy of anger and resentment is a skill most people are still working at getting a handle on, myself included. Medical studies prove that long-held anger and resentment is damaging to our physical and emotional well-being. The bottom line is, the energy of resentment eats away at our minds, our bodies, and the body of our relationships. Given this knowledge, why would anyone want to hold on to resentment, anger, and bitterness? Someone once said holding resentment toward another person is like drinking arsenic and hoping the person you are resenting dies. Buddha put it another way: “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal intending to throw it at someone else.

You are the one who gets burned.” This helps put it into perspective, doesn’t it? “Re-sent-ment” is re-sent anger. It is the mental and emotional act of resending toxic and negative energy through our own minds and bodies. This is not to diminish the fact that many of us may have legitimate reasons to be angry towards another person. Sometimes people do thoughtless and even cruel things to each other. However, stop and think about it: Does holding onto resentment serve YOU in a positive, life affirming way? Most likely, the answer is no. Most times, the person or people we hold in resentment don’t even know or care...or worse yet, some of them are already in the grave, but we are still allowing them to hold us hostage to the past. Isn’t it time to set ourselves free? I have discovered that communication is always the healing balm for relationship issues and forgiveness sets us free. It’s important to remember that forgiving doesn’t mean we are condoning the actions that evoked our anger—it means we will set ourselves free from the past by not “resending” the toxins of resentment through our mind and body in the future. Proactive, clear, authentic, transparent communication

and forgiveness will set us free from the energy of resentment, anger and bondage to the past. Consider this as a Mindfulness Practice: •

Make a list of anyone you may hold in resentment. (This could include yourself.)

If you are uncertain, go within and ask your wisdom-Self to reveal where there may be bitterness in your heart.

Then, commit to communicate with each person in the way. Call them, write them a letter, email them or go and to see them. If they are no longer alive, write a letter and then, in a moment of silence and peace, burn the letter, releasing the resentment as you bury the ashes. What can make the process easier is remembering that we forgive others for ourselves, not them. Holding resentment only holds you hostage.

Set yourself free today. Why? Because you love yourself too much to drink arsenic or hold on to hot coals, yes?
