A “living wall” is planned, featuring plants native both to Florida and Cuba. The only scheduled (illegal) drug, the component that requires a doctor’s prescription- is called Delta-9. One milligram away is Delta-8, currently the fastest growing hemp product. From the Lightning winning the Stanley Cup to the Tampa Bay Rays’ World Series star turn against the Los Angeles Dodgers (Rays lost, but with dignity and accolades), sports fans could light their nachos on fire with all of Tampa Bay’s hot sports talent. And then came Brady, star-kissed and shaking off his snow boots to join the Bucs as quarterback and brainy brawn behind so many of the winning games, including the NFC Championship and the first time ever in 55 years that a home team has played in their hometown SuperBowl. Go Bucs, bbq those Kansas City Chiefs and show off our newly acquired Vincent Lombardi Trophy. This is Brady’s 10th Super Bowl and despite the limited in-person attendance, America is fired up and Paradise never looked so appealing. At age 30, Doug Izzo is the new executive director of his hometown Chamber of Commerce, in Englewood, Florida. Locals there might remember him as the manager of the former Rotonda Pizza, the restaurant his family owned when he was younger. He also became active in local politics, and has kept watch on political issues ever since. Doug majored in communications and minored in political science and business management at Eckerd College. He worked his senior year of college as director of government affairs at the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber, where he created a leadership and government affairs program. He also had to resign as city commissioner of District Two in St. Pete Beach due to the move. A special election is planned for his replacement. Interested residents of District Two should contact the City Clerk for a candidate’s binder. The Chamber will continue its governmental affairs work on behalf of the businesses and communities they serve. They have hired Suskey Consulting (a governmental affairs and business development firm) to assist with 2021 state legislative priorities and business relief options. Questions? The Saint Hotel and 82 Degrees – A brand new 19-room boutique hotel and quality restaurant is taking shape a block south of Oyster Shucker. Location is critical in real estate. The redevelopers recognized the potential of the site due to its prime sunset location in the Sunset Capital of Florida. “The money shot is from the restaurant deck at sunset,” said the owner, as we were discussing the project. They were also involved in the rehab of what is now St. Pete Beach Suites a couple blocks to the south. The restaurant, to be called “82 Degrees,” which represents the average annual temperature in St. Pete Beach, should open in late March or early April and plans to serve three meals daily, featuring “Coastal Cuisine,” locally sourced, quality foods to the greatest extent possible. ST. PETERSBURG University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science has received a multimillion-dollar donation to help further support one of its campus anchors. A $3 million estate gift was given to the USF Foundation, from the late Anne Von Rosenstiel who passed away in December 2019. Von Rosenstiel and late husband, Werner Von Rosenstiel, have been longtime supporters of
Belpointe proposes 15-story, 256-unit development for St. Pete’s EDGE District A new multifamily building has been proposed for the EDGE District in downtown St. Pete. Belpointe, which invests in opportunity zones, closed on 1.6 acres at 1000 1st Ave. N for $12 million back in October 2020. The site is currently home to two vacant office buildings, two surface parking lots and the former Shirley Ann Hotel, which has been vacant for three years. TREASURE ISLAND Mayor Larry Lunn feels he is facing a serious challenge March 9th from Commissioner Tyler Payne, who thinks the mayor’s aggressive plan for the rebirth of the island’s downtown is more than residents want to see. “There have been a series of residents at commission meetings asking for a more moderate plan,” said Payne, but the mayor does not seem to be listening. Deborah Toth is facing opposition for her commission seat too, from two candidates that want to see the old bottlebrush tree remain in the playground. The commission had voted unanimously for its removal, before citizens objections put its future in question.

Arts Alliance Founder To Surrender Reins John Collins, founder of the Arts Alliance, will retire as its executive director as of March 31, 2021. Board vice chair, Helen French will serve as interim executive director while a search firm for a new executive director is engaged. 10

COVID-19 UPDATE Registration process announced for Pinellas County To expedite the COVID-19 vaccination process, the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County created a new, more robust registration system to manage appointments for those 65 and older. Residents can create an account at www.PatientPortalFL.com. With more than 250,000 people over 65 years of age and a limited number of vaccine doses, this process will take time and patience is requested.
The Pinellas Connected Community project, a partnership among the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), city of Clearwater, city of St. Petersburg, PSTA and Forward Pinellas, is one of only 10 agencies selected to receive Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment grant funding. Their $4.6 million grant is for the research and application of smart transportation technologies. Plans are to accelerate deployment of connected vehicle infrastructure along several key corridors, development of a centralized smart cities database for collection, dissemination and use of real time information

Although the team at the airport and the aviation community at large have striven to create a safe environment, the air traffic control tower was closed for deep cleaning late in January, when a positive virus case was discovered amongst staff there. International Passengers Must Test Negative A new federal policy, which went into effect on Jan. 26, 2021, requires all international passengers headed to the United States to show proof of a negative coronavirus test before boarding their flights. “Such testing, combined with a period of staying at home and everyday precautions like wearing masks and social distancing, can make travel safer, healthier, and more responsible by reducing spread on planes, in airports, and at destinations,” said Dr. Robert R. Airlines must confirm the negative test result for all passengers or the documentation of recovery before they board. The CDC currently recommends that all air travelers, including those flying within the United States, get tested one to three days before travel, and again three to five days after the trip is complete.
Bus Rapid Transit – The SunRunner Platforms for Bus Rapid Transit stops are being installed in St. Pete Beach and along the route to and from downtown St. Petersburg in the first step of deployment of the area’s first BRT route. Meanwhile, a preferred route has been selected for the regional rapid transit line connecting Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties–but not all are on board with the route and the timing. Scott Pringle, a planner with Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority’s (TBARTA) consultant on the project, New York-based WSP USA Inc., presented
updated plans to the board for a 41-mile bus line linking Wesley Chapel to the Westshore area in Tampa and on to downtown St. Petersburg and the Gateway area. The goal is to provide regional connectivity between the metros by using dedicated lanes and on-level boarding. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been delays. “As things change in the coming year overall on the TB Next program, we can adjust [the rapid regional transit project’s timeline],” Pringle said, stating the pandemic may delay the project by 10 years.

As we discussed last month, Caveat Emptor means “let the buyer beware.” I think I made the point then that buyers are vulnerable to a number of property condition issues that can cause a great deal of pain (and expense) after closing. Now I want to go into the pain that both the buyer and the seller will go through if something big goes wrong, and they end up tied up for many months (or years) of expensive, painful litigation. It is literally the worst of all worlds. Florida law requires sellers of residential property to disclose hidden defects (of which they are aware) to buyers, but there
is sometimes an issue as to what was disclosed and what wasn’t. There is a form in common use called a Seller’s Property Condition Disclosure that is useful. It is somewhat lengthy and very detailed, but if used properly, it leaves the seller with a good record of exactly what has and has not been disclosed to the buyer. Most sellers won’t know the answer to every question on the form, but if you just don’t know, you can say that. The seller can also indicate if he or she ever resided in the property, and for how long, which bears on how much detailed information the seller can be expected to have about the property.
Some of the kinds of issues which we’ve seen result in prolonged litigation include foundation settlement issues, termite infestation and (worse yet, structural termite damage), and water intrusion / mold issues. Each of these is a whole subject in themselves, but the common goal is to discover these issues before you close.
When it comes to whether or not the seller knew about a defect, it is often difficult to prove that the seller did. Sometimes he or she discussed it with neighbors, or used a service to address it, but it is very hard to discover such evidence.
Talk to a real estate lawyer, before you sign any documents. And let him or her protect you.
Property inspection services generally have great checklists, but the ultimate worth of this inspection depends on the knowledge and experience of the individual inspector. All property inspection services include a clause in their contracts limiting their liability to their clients to the amount paid for the inspection, which is insignificant compared to a major loss. I often advise my clients to have a general contractor look at the property in addition to an inspector. The contractor is unlikely to miss structural issues that will cost you big time.

ANOTHER YEAR, AND MORE CHALLENGES IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY… Hard to believe that 2021 is now here, and Santa is back at the North Pole resting up for next year. Spring is just around the corner, and many families that come through our model center each year have now decided that it’s time to build their dream home here along the Pinellas beach communities. Again, new home costs have increased due to inflation, supply & demand, and unfortunately in 2021 it is predicted that another round of increases will take place, now due to constant FEMA changes and a new building code revision that is just now being put into place (2020 7th Edition, effective 12/31/2020). After the devastating pictures that we all saw with recent storms over the last couple years, it only stands to reason that the building industry cannot be allowed to construct homes using yesterday’s codes. When the big one hits Pinellas, we will see the same devastation from the existing homes built decades ago. It’s been 100 years since a direct hit hurricane came ashore in Pinellas County, but the odds are very probable of course. I hope to have 25 to 30 years left to chase my grandchildren around, and I hope that I do not witness a Pinellas direct hit, but the odds are probably going to catch up to us. Specifically, the talk in the industry is that FEMA will enact even stronger standards for homes, for new construction and major remodeling. Some beach jurisdictions themselves are enacting more stringent codes than FEMA requires. The so called “50% Rule” may become history, so remodeling homes using this loophole may go the way of the dinosaurs. I can’t say I’m against that, seeing that if/when the storm comes, those family dollars now being spent for
remodeling will be wasted as they will then be required to start over with an elevated home, at tomorrow’s costs. It’s also predicted that this tourist season, a record number of snowbirds will become homeowners along the beach communities. The trends are high with people moving to Florida due to the Covid pandemic and ultra-high tax laws in many other populous states. I personally enjoy seeing the new homes being constructed here by various builders in the many Pinellas communities. And thankfully, these newly constructed homes will weather the storm, being constructed under newer stricter codes to protect the homeowners investment and offering extremely lower flood insurance rates being that they meet the current code heights. Then too, these families that are now constructing new homes will appreciate many years of family enjoyment living in a new more modern home, as well as the peace of mind knowing the security of a new home, raised above the flood plain and constructed with today’s more stringent standards. Preserve the ‘Burg Joins StPete2050 To Save Historic Sites & Neighborhoods
Story by STEVE TRAIMAN In 2019, the city embarked upon StPete2050, a planning and “visioning” process organized around ten priority community themes. Through StPete2050, a common vision for the city’s physical, social, and economic advancements will be sought that can be used to coordinate and guide development in appropriate areas of the city. To do so, 10 community themes, set forth below, have been identified: Included are Arts and Culture; Shared Economic Prosperity; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Sustainability and Resilience; Education; Transportation and Mobility; Growth and Community; Character; Attainable Housing; Healthy Communities; Parks, Recreation, and Open Space. Although not identified as a theme, historic preservation is one of the goals within the theme, “growth and community character.” City Council is expected to adopt the plan in early 2021, with the plan to be presented at a late January meeting. While commenting on the planning process is not the most exciting form of civic engagement, doing so is vitally important to future city historic preservation efforts – keystone of the Preserve the ‘Burg group for more than four decades. St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman told Paradise News, “St. Petersburg still retains much of the resort-town flavor its founders cherished, a community of pelicans, porpoises, endless sunshine and sailboats. This happens in no small part because of our friends at Preserve the ‘Burg, whose mission is to keep St. Pete special. For more than 40 years, they have helped guide and shape conversations about what our community values enough to preserve, and worked with our city team to do just that.”
“When the leadership of Preserve the ‘Burg told us they had applied for a grant from the 1772 Foundation – a national organization that works to ensure the safe passage of our historic buildings and farmland to future generations – we knew it would make sense to match that grant with our own. Now, the Preserve the ‘Burg team has the tools necessary to not just advocate for historic preservation, but to actually purchase and restore some of the properties and sites that make St. Pete special.” “And though we are discussing the rich history of the Sunshine City, I want to ensure we focus on the future as well. We began StPete2050 as a citywide conversation about the future of St. Petersburg. Old, historic buildings contribute to our sense of place, but there is much more to it than that. Our Movies in the Park pre-pandemic events in May and October are the most popular free events on our downtown waterfront and we hope to resume those soon. “Our Executive Director search is underway to replace Monica Kile who had been involved with PTB for 14 years, initially as a volunteer and board member. She served two stints as executive director, first from 2013 to 2015, in 2019 after directing the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Eckerd College, and working on special projects with the Palladium Theater and YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg. We had many applicants from across the US, and have recently narrowed that down to a small group that we will choose from. “We are not anti-growth,” Schorr emphasized, ”instead, we encourage thought-out, balanced growth.” He noted the PTB website mission statement,“Since 1977 we have been working to secure the preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, maintenance, and/or acquisition of important natural, scenic, historic, and architectural sites and structures. We accomplish this by working with the city, county, businesses, and individuals to identify historic districts and sites, landmark significant structures, and foster appreciation of St. Petersburg’s historic environment. “And no matter what project we undertake, the overarching goal is to instill in St. Pete’s citizens an appreciation of our shared heritage and culture and how this contributes to our quality of life and economic success.

“As Mayor Kriseman noted, in 2019 PTB received grant funding from the 1972 Foundation to start a historic preservation revolving fund. The city of St. Petersburg matched the grant, and the PTB Historic Properties Program was born. A revolving fund is an active real estate-based program for protecting endangered properties using techniques such as: options, purchase/resale, easements and tax credits. These historic structures ultimately are returned to the private sector with deed restrictions in place. “Any proceeds realized from transactions are ‘recycled’ to sustain the proactive preservation efforts of the program. The goal of these programs is community redevelopment using historic preservation as a tool. As its first project Preserve the ‘Burg is working to save the circa 1909 Shell Dash Cottage, currently located near Mirror Lake. “Another keystone of PTB is the Neighborhoods Program. The unique character of St. Petersburg’s historic neighborhoods is threatened by rampant demolition and the construction of new homes out of scale with their surroundings. Preserve the ‘Burg works with neighborhood residents and associations on solutions that maintain the historic character of our neighborhoods, including the creation of local historic districts, which discourage unnecessary demolitions and encourage the compatible new construction.” Current PTB Officers include include Harry Heuman, president; Robin L. Reed, vice president; Bob Carter, treasurer; and Matt King, secretary. In addition to officers, other 2021 board members include Raymond Arsenault, Ph.D.; Peter Belmont, Jeff Danner, Maria Erickson, Emily Elwyn, Sharon Hayes, County Commissioner Charlie Justice, Maryann Lynch, Jeff Schorr and Adam Vasallo. Summing up, Mayor Kriseman invited all residents and business leaders to visit www.StPete2050.com and take the community survey. He emphasized,“You will learn more about how you can participate in not only ensuring that our history is preserved, but also to prepare our city for the future. by Thomas Mandzik, The Sunset Bistro Date Night Recipe For Your Sweetheart Maple Sesame Glazed Salmon 2 - 8oz Fresh Salmon Marinade: ¼ cup Maple syrup 2 oz orange juice 1 fresh lemon 1 tbsp sesame seeds 1 tsp brown sugar 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp ginger puree
Mix all ingredients in blender Rub With Marinade / Glaze Refrigerate Salmon Overnight For The Cooking Process: 1 tbsp butter 1 tsp sugar In a medium, pre-heated, non-stick pan, melt butter and gently saute’ salt and peppered 8 oz. salmon, skin side up for 3 minutes. Flip over. Brush with glaze, and place in 325o oven for 6 minutes. Add to preferred or in-season locally grown organic vegetables. Cook to your desired doneness.

No Excuses When it Comes to Preventing Heart Disease February is American Heart Month, so I’ll take this opportunity to remind you that prevention really is the key to heart health. From a primary care perspective, I like to say that the best heart attack is one that never happens. His passion for music started early, writing his first song “Highway Girl” at age 7. In addition to writing music and playing piano, he plays both ukulele and guitar. “I am following my dream,” says Leon. “When I look at the piano keys, I see colors. Every sound has a color. This mysterious phenomenon is called ‘synesthesia,’ and few people have one, but I have double; for me, it makes it easier to learn music and math. Billy Joel and Elton John had it.” Leon is self-taught, and although his parents are not musicians, they’ve dabbled, and he even has one of his mom’s guitars. “I teach myself how to play by ear,” he says. He auditioned for America’s Got Talent and made it through three rounds as well as another show he can’t mention right now and will hear back in 2021. His inspiration? Harry Styles, Taylor Swift (he’d love to duet with her), Ava Max, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Billy Joel, Sean Mendes and music documentaries on Netflix, and has a “quadrillion voice memos” of lyrics and songs he wants to turn into finished songs. Leon prefers solo performing because he can “communicate with myself and my piano and blast away, can update a song on the fly when I’m performing.” Homeschooling gives him time to work on his music and other passions – tinkering, soldering, nature and playing with his cat Mousie, who likes to push his face into Leon’s when recording. Mentoring musical talent in other kids is important to Leon. “I want to be someone other people can look up to, can feel good about listening and making music. Daniela Soledad: This girl from Ipanema now lives in downtown St. Pete. “I love being able to walk everywhere and being part of this wonderful community,” says the Brazilian transplant. “Most of all I love the live music you find everywhere on Central and Beach Drive.” Daniela and Palladium jazz favorite Nate Najar met in Florida through a bit of serendipity and that collaboration has led to live performances, virtual Facebook concerts and more. “I was a stay-at-home mom at the time and having grown up in a musical environment and attending the conservatory back in Brazil, I decided I wanted to begin performing professionally. I booked a gig and hired my good friend Phill Fest to play guitar. Phill is a fabulous Brazilian guitarist who lives on the east coast of Florida. He became unavailable for the gig and recommended his good friend Nate Najar. Nate and I began working together here and there, and one day he offered to produce an album for me. The rest, as they say, is history!” Her local faves? “I like having lunch at Mickey’s Cafe & Organics, getting wine, cheese and bread at MUST Wine Loft, walking to Kahwa Coffee to have a cappuccino with Nate, taking the kids to the North Shore playground, having a picnic on Straub Park by the banyan trees, going to the Pier, going to Spa Beach, going to the Dali Museum or the Imagine Museum, going to events at the Palladium and Studio@620, there is just so much to do,” says the gorgeous singer, known for her phrasing and tender vocals. Daniela’s musical style is inspired by João Gilberto, Julie London, Kurt Elling, Frank Sinatra, John Coltrane as well as the Great American Songbook and classic American Jazz when she is not spending time in the studio. Pandemic distancing has been hard on everyone, but perhaps has hit Gulfportians harder than most. Our community of fun-loving, artistic, recovering hippies likes to invite the world to enjoy its fun, artistic, hip events. Having to retreat to our separate worlds has made us all a little blue. We’re inventive, however. The city and Gulfport Merchants Chamber (GMC) devised Gulfport STRONG, a heightened safety awareness campaign for the GMC-sponsored public events that assures social distancing and safety protocols are met and exceeded. We cautiously reopened our renowned Tuesday Fresh Market. Our ever-popular First Friday Art Walk returned as an evening of juried fine artwork and music. Our Third Saturday event was reinvigorated as Indie Faire Makers Market, featuring fine arts and crafts, and entertainment for the whole family. In 2021 we joyously invite the world back to “Rediscover Gulfport.” The Gulfport Fine Arts Festival is Saturday, Feb. 13 and and Sunday, Feb. 14, 10am-5pm at Veterans Park. You and your Valentine can enjoy “the meandering path along Boca Ciega Bay, viewing handmade artwork, listening to jazz music, and supporting local artists,” says ceramicist and festival organizer Brenda McMahon. “It’s a great place to buy art and appreciate all the beauty around.” And it’s free. Next up is my personal favorite, the 16th annual Pink Flamingo Tour on Saturday, March 6, 11am-5pm. Traditionally a home tour, this year the organizers went back to the drawing board and made it a Covid-friendly all-outdoor Garden Tour. You’ll have the opportunity to see everything from an under-construction rain garden to a manicured backyard art gallery to meditation spaces, and chickens, chickens, chickens. Tickets are $10 in advance at Gulfport Beach Bazaar or www.pinkflamingohometour.com, $15 at the door. While you’re at the Gulfport Recreation Center registering for the Tour, take a gander at the display of items to be auctioned during Best Seat in the House Chair-ity Auction. The event, which benefits the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation, takes place at the Tiki Bar & Grill during Third Saturday Indie Faire, March 20, 5-7pm. Chair-ity had to be canceled in 2020, so the 16 artists who decorated the Adirondack chairs and vintage windows have been waiting a year to show off their creative flair. Board Vice-Chair Helen French will serve as interim executive director while Catalyst Consulting Services conducts a national search for a new executive director. Florida CraftArt’s Members’ Show: Contemporary Craft at its Finest is a juried exhibition of original art showcasing the best of handcrafted work by members. Forty-six artists created 79 pieces from intricate jewelry to glass sculptures. Gulfport’s own Dawn Waters’ felt portrait of Salvador Dali is among those on display. “The first Members’ Show was held in 1951,” says Florida CraftArt’s Board President Tyler Jones. “As a statewide, member-supported organization, we display outstanding handmade objects, made by some of the best craftspeople in the country.” The show runs through March 20 when the People’s Choice Award will be presented at the closing reception. The critical importance of these deserts and their ecologies in the face of climate changes and population pressures is considered by many to be making their survival precarious. By visually interpreting the science, Benedict’s intent is to raise public awareness of the potential of water scarcity. The exhibition will be on view through Sept. 15. Peter Callender (“Between Riverside and Crazy,” “Othello”) plays all three characters: Louis Armstrong, the greatest of all jazz trumpeters; Joe Glaser, his white manager; and Miles Davis, who admired Armstrong’s playing but disliked his onstage manner. The Warehouse Arts District Association is wrapping up the development of WADA Art Tubs for K-5 art teachers to use in their classrooms to support their established curriculum. The project focuses on six art-focused buildings in St Pete: Dali Museum, Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of American Arts and Crafts Movement, Royal Theater, and Palladium. The tubs are designed to align with math and science, with the hope to include art in the future. The goal is to provide an art experience that supports the established classroom structure by sharing WADA resources and highlighting the talent of our WADA member artists. Sadly, considering the impact of Covid on schools, our best hope is to launch the tubs for the Fall 2021 school year.
Voices of Truth debuts In collaboration with Outcast Theatre Collective, The Voices of Truth Festival makes its inaugural debut from Powerstories Theatre’s technology-updated venue on March 10-28. Sixteen conversation-starting productions will take to the virtual stage. Back in January, the USF Contemporary Art Museum, part of the Institute for Research in Art in the College of The Arts, launched a hybrid exhibition titled Marking Monuments in both online and physical spaces. The exhibit features artists’ installations and interventions that challenge, erase and transform dominant histories, offering reimagined representations for equity in public culture. Marking Monuments also features Field Trip, a hands-on activity that invites investigation into local monuments, generates questions
about art and justice in public space, and seeks proposals for new ideas for monuments. Accessible both online and in-person at the USF Contemporary Art Museum, Field Trip can be conducted safely in public or from home using Street View, Google Earth or other online tools. The coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible to gather to recognize the passing of people special to us, whether the virus got them, or they passed of other causes. The last few months, and especially the last two weeks of 2020 saw the end for some significant beach personalities, some of whose significance should be recognized and their passing acknowledged. We do not believe any were virus related casualties.
Mary B. Falkenstein
Mary B. (Reitano) Falkenstein was widowed early in Baltimore with three children in 1961. After running, then selling the Keystone restaurant and bar in Baltimore in 1976, she joined her sisters in Pass-a-Grille, managing the Keystone Hotel. The following year, she bought the adjoining property and with her children Bruno, Rick and Mary Jo, developed the Hurricane Restaurant. Both her sons were elected city commissioners, Bruno repeatedly. Her daughter married a popular St. Pete Beach police officer. Mary passed in late September. She would have been 100 last Dec. 30. John Spencer Lucas III was just 70 when he left us on Dec. 14th. His story was told on page 44 of January’s edition.

Carol (Curotto) Upham was 86 when she passed on Dec. 24th. The Curotto family built and operated the Bon Aire Beach Resort. In 1950, Carol married William Upham, who became the first mayor of St. Petersburg Beach. Carol was a lover of art and history and was very active in the community, especially with the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Alfred Edward Ingram’s passing on December 25th was a gift, according to his daughter Sandy Lyman. He had led a wonderful, productive life and had been ready to meet his maker for a while. An avid fisherman, the retired postmaster from Maryland reluctantly gave up his snowbird lifestyle just a few years ago. When he was here, his wife Gerry one of the area’s busiest volunteers for years, had him building things out of wood for the museum or Woman’s Club. Al’s latest projects were the little Lending Libraries found around Pass-a-Grille.
Betsy Ann Pheil, 79, died peacefully December 29th in her Gulport home, after a long battle with cancer. Her family history in St. Petersburg started 140 years ago with the Pheil hotel and theater that were recently torn down at Fourth Street and Central. Betsy’s grandfather, Abram C. Pheil, mayor of St. Petersburg, was high bidder to become the first commercial airline Betsy Ann Pheil passenger in history. Tony Jannus flew him in the Benoist airboat from the Vinoy Basin in St. Petersburg to Davis Island in Tampa for $400. Betsy and her brother Bill were the first caesarean-born twins at what is now Bayfront Hospital. Betsy was a board member of numerous institutions, notably the St. Petersburg Museum of History and the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum. 42

Go to www.thepineappleprojects.org to learn more or to nominate a family. 100 Women Who Care of Pinellas County is a philanthropic group that provides an avenue for women to join together to bring financial support to local, charitable organizations that have a 501(c)(3) status. Members commit to attending four meetings per year (one per quarter) and pledge to donate $100 to an elected charity at each meeting. The members have the opportunity to nominate any organization, three of the nominated organizations are then randomly selected to give a 5-minute presentation, a vote is taken, and then checks are written directly to the winning charity. Since February of 2013, the group has given $296,150 to local charities. The next meeting (with options of both Zoom and live) will be 7-8pm on Tuesday, February 16, at Cove Cay Golf Club, located at 2612 Cove Cay Drive in Clearwater. What Vaccines Are Right For Your Pet? Why Vaccines Are Important Vaccines boost immunity and prevent serious diseases, including rabies and distemper. Vaccines may contain small amounts of weakened or killed viruses. After being vaccinated, antibodies will quickly kill and attack the virus, preventing your pet from becoming ill. Vaccination slows or stops the spread of disease, keeping pets, and sometimes, people, safe. Before the rabies vaccine was introduced, pets and humans exposed to the virus faced certain death. Thanks to the vaccine, introduced in the late 1800s, untold numbers of lives have been saved. Rabies still kills thousands of animals
effective for three years or longer. The rabies vaccine schedule varies depending on the laws in your area.
Which Vaccines Do My Pets Need? Core vaccines protect your pet from diseases most likely to occur where you live. Non-core vaccines are optional depending on your pet’s risk factors. Core vaccines for dogs include: adenovirus-2 (adenovirus and hepatitis), distemper, parvovirus and rabies. For cats, core vaccines are for: distemper, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus Type 1, rabies. Ferrets need distemper and rabies vaccines too.
What About Side Effects? Side effects can occur after vaccination, but most are mild and only last for a day or two. Common side effects may include mild fever, pain around the injection site, lethargy, reduced appetite, coughing, and sneezing. Call your veterinarian immediately if your companion experiences nausea or vomiting, hives, trouble breathing, severe coughing or swelling around the face, eyes, or nose.
Feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia, bordetella, and chlamydophila felis are non-core vaccines recommended for some cats. Veterinarians may suggest the feline leukemia vaccine, for example, if your pet spends times outdoors. Core vaccines are generally given to young pets, although adult pets that haven’t received them yet also need them. Some vaccines need to be repeated every year, while others are

INSHORE Sheepshead get excited when the weather cools and the water gets murky. We have seen some great action on these guys around the bridges, docks, seawalls, piers and more. Shrimp, fiddlers, or cut oysters or clams are all great bait options. The trout species are also biting well. This time of year, we see a big surge of the silver trout in the passes, on the beaches and around the mouth of the bay. These guys love the tandem rigs like the Love’s Lures bounced along the sandy bottom areas. However, most any slow-moving soft plastic will work. The speckled trout bite turned on a bit in the upper bay. Some nice redfish are being caught along the residential canals and mangrove shorelines, when the water is warming up in the early to late afternoon. NEAR SHORE It is sometimes tough to get out offshore or even near shore due to the cold fronts. Once we got back to that 40-70-foot range we have been catching some nice hogfish. Our five-hour half day, 10-hour all day and private charter fishing boats all caught some nice numbers of big keeper hogfish on live shrimp. We are also seeing some good action on the lane snapper and mangrove snapper from 60ft and deeper, ready to eat shrimp, cut threadfin and the lanes will even take some squid. Red grouper bite has been a little hit and miss, but we are still seeing a few. OFFSHORE Mangrove snapper are biting well and an occasional vermillion snapper appears at 150-200ft of water. The average size is much larger than usual. The occasional big scamp grouper is also being caught around 180-250ft, in deep-water potholes. Tampa Bay Watch maintained 208 monotubes (monofilament recycling stations) at 75 docks, piers, and parks around the bay. A total of 59 volunteers recovered 826 miles of fishing line in 2020 to prevent the entanglement of animals! Creature Feature: Giant Red Hermit Crab The giant red hermit crab is the largest species of hermit crab in North America and is found here in Tampa Bay! Its main body can reach up to around 30 cm long with large, crushing claws. Its body is bright rusty red with textured bumps and knobs, and it has long red and white striped antennae. Antennae are used as feelers allowing the hermit crab to sense its surroundings. ENCOURAGING WORDS

Are You Willing to Do the Thing? “Do something every day that you don’t want to do. This is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain... I do not perform duties for duty’s sake, but because their neglect would make the man uncomfortable. A man performs but one duty – the duty of contenting his spirit, the duty of making himself agreeable to himself.” ~ Mark Twain They say we are not hard-wired to endure 11 months of social isolation with no actual end in sight. They also say living in uncertainty for an extended time can suck the energy out of you to a point of total lethargy, leeching your creative essence dry. Pandemics tend to do that. Whoever “they” are may be on to something. Here I sit at my computer staring at my “things to do” list and, to be transparent with you, I am not feeling the love. The last thing I want to do now is another “thing.” My logical mind wanders into a discussion with itself saying, “You’ve worked hard for the past few months and you deserve a break.” My mind is lobbying for a day with no obligations or commitments, but it is also aware of the trap it is setting for itself. This is when I become most aware of that place within me wherein instant gratification lies in wait, chomping at the bit, hoping to ambush and undermine my commitment to my predetermined duties of the day. When I first read Mark Twain’s aforementioned quote, I recoiled from it because it challenged me to live up to my highest potential when I wasn’t in the mood for living up to anything. So goes the journey of a soul wishing to honor its goals, purpose and evolutionary path; many are the micromoments when inspiration to do what Emerson refers to as “the thing” we do not want to do comes and goes in a heartbeat. The practice is to initiate and stay with the action even after the inspiration has long faded in the wind. This is a high call to duty– to ourselves. 62

I interpret Mark Twain’s use of the words “doing your duty” as being synonymous with the commitment to one’s self to develop and grow more into a being of infinite possibilities by not settling for the road more traveled which is, without question, the road of instant gratification. In practical application, how does the wisdom of Twain and Emerson resonate with you? What does “doing something you don’t want to do” mean? Does jumping out of an airplane or bungee jumping qualify, just because you are afraid to do so? It could, but it might also include the more mundane things we often might dodge such as taking out trash, mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, finding an alternative to going to the gym, communicating with someone we have been avoiding, finishing that project we’ve been putting off, and so on. Regardless of what it might be, it means putting wheels under that which is ours to do to create a life worth living.
A pandemic can be a great excuse to avoid going the distance of any endeavor–but there is a place within us that knows when we are selling ourselves short. Sometimes I have difficulty doing the one extra thing (whatever it may be) even when I know, as a result, I will have the power Emerson promises; that power always comes in the form of delayed gratification. There is nothing as empowering as the emotion which arises from within when we stand toe-to-toe with our own dragons of lethargy and slay them. Does this mean to say we should never take a day off to do nothing but relax and regenerate? No; it means when we take those days, we can know it’s sponsored by a conscious, proactive choice made from a place of authentic power rather than instant gratification or lethargy. What “duty” might you do today that would make you, as Twain says, agreeable with yourself? You need look no further than the finish line for this day you have already drawn and then choose one thing that, in your heart, you know is not on the agenda which needs doing and do that thing. Once you start the process, it will amaze you how the Universe conspires to do its part. There is more power available to you than you might imagine when you just do the thing. Yes, now.
