PUBLISHERS Peter Roos | Marketing & Sales sales@paradisenewsfl.com Renee Roos | Creative Director info@paradisenewsfl.com

We met in government class at the Clearwater campus of St. Pete Junior College in 1970. Renee LaFountain, a ballerina, model, a Florida native from Tampa caught my eye right away.

EDITORIAL Nanette Wiser - Executive Editor wiser86@gmail.com Steve Traiman - Feature Editor traimancreativecopy@gmail.com

Having graduated high school in Ottawa two years before, I was a 19-year-old Canadian immigrant, living between Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs in a home at the campground dad decided to build on the banks of Lake Tarpon in 1969. Professor Freeman caught us passing notes and reminded us we were not in high school anymore. I soon learned the summers she had spent in Montreal had predisposed her to liking Canadians. Lucky me.

ART & PRODUCTION DIRECTOR Janet Nummi ADVERTISING REPS Gigi Grimshaw Linda Motzenbecker

My mother’s father (our family’s most successful businessman), had advised me that if I ever found something rare, I should try to acquire it and hang onto it as long as possible. Native Floridians are still rare. August 15th is our Golden Anniversary.

CONTRIBUTING COLUMNISTS Arts & Leisure | Events - Buddy Baker Art News - Caron Schwartz

Renee was a dance teacher in Tampa and Hillsborough County for over 10 years. She impacted the lives of hundreds of youngsters in Tampa and Brandon. I was a Publix man and U-Save grocer while in college, then a CPA and management consultant for a few years, before both of us, almost accidentally, became magazine publishers. We had been producing office guides to Florida and other publications in the mid-1980’s, when we moved to St. Pete Beach for our only child to attend high school at Admiral Farragut Academy. Renee was soon recruited to found and publish Grille Bits for the Pass-a-Grille community. Paradise NEWS began a few years later. Renee is a Leo and is full of ideas. It was her idea, for example, that St. Pete Beach should be named the “Sunset Capital of Florida,” and that Corey Avenue should have a Sunday market. In our half-century together Renee and I have worked together most of the time. We have also vacationed together, and I believe if you ask either of us, we’d be willing to do it all over again. We have been producing and sending some of you Paradise NEWS for over 26 years, more than half our married life. It’s been good for us, for our loyal advertisers and it has been good for countless readers – old and new. Sometimes, I wonder about and give thanks for the forces at work in the universe that brought these two soul mates together 50 years ago.

It seems to me, the same power brings us the people we need to publish Paradise NEWS, just when we need them. Our good friend and The Encouraging Word columnist, Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones, author of The Art Of Abundance, would counsel, “Have Faith. Live Boldly. The Ride of Your Life Does Not Begin Down the Road.” That was the credo of Zelda Troiano too, who tragically left us 10 days after turning in the update for our April 2021 Art and Leisure and Events columns. Thanks for five great years Zelda. We miss you already. See Zelda’s tributes on page 46.

Research into using cannabis to aid the easing of symptoms in a wide array of ailments is advancing in leaps and bounds. Last month we summarized many benefits attested to by Dr. Peter Grinspoon of Harvard Health. This is true also with the symptoms associated with perimenopause, such as mood swings, hot flashes, insomnia, pain, fatigue, anxiety, and more, according to an article from Strainprint: “The drastic change in a woman’s hormonal balance is unpleasant and very stressful for her, and those around her who don’t understand exactly what is happening. There is hope for natural relief of symptoms and cannabis can be combined with other therapies to amplify that relief.”

The Endocannabinoid System The endocannabinoid system interacts with naturally produced cannabinoids that our bodies form and metabolize every day. We know of 113 different cannabinoids, and each one individually or combined in various ways has a different effect on our bodies. In-depth studies into this network of receptors have proven that this system is a crucial part of our central and peripheral nervous systems and peripheral organs. It is this system that allows us to experience the therapeutic benefits associated with cannabis use. Estrogen levels have a clear link to the endocannabinoid system, and when estrogen levels rise, so do endocannabinoid levels. The reverse is also true. Cannabis use is being evaluated as an alternative to Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT). Examples of How Cannabinoids Affect Symptoms Hot Flashes One particular cannabinoid, known as Anandamide, is very similar to THC, and our bodies produce it naturally. It aids in regulating body temperature, and when kicked into overdrive like in periods of strenuous exercise, it gives us a “high” (runner’s high). So, THC in cannabis has a “cooling” effect on the body and can help alleviate hot flashes. Mood Swings Estrogen plays a big role in stabilizing mood and emotional responses. The combination of THC and CBD can boost efficiency in the body metabolization of estrogen and combat mood swings, anxiety and depression in perimenopausal women. Insomnia In various dosages, THC affects our energy levels in different ways. Small doses have a sedating effect, moderate doses have a

stimulating effect and large doses have a psychedelic effect. Pure THC can produce feelings of anxiety, so it is important to find a strain with a proper balance of THC and CBD to achieve the maximum benefits. Are you looking to explore options and find the right cannabis strain to help alleviate menopausal symptoms? We can help!! Browse our Symptom Search function to browse different strains that help ease the symptoms. Questions about strains? www.strainprint.ca/ understanding-terpenes-camphene/ Camphene, sometimes called comphene, is one of more than 200 terpenes in hemp and cannabis. Terpenes are aromatic molecules once thought to convey only aroma and, from an evolutionary functional perspective, to protect a plant from pests and predators. It has the ability to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the treatment of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease. It acts as an expectorant in the treatment of coughs and throat conditions. PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

The Mortgage Contingency Clause Any number of things can go wrong when buying real estate, so you need several safety protections to keep you from being bound to go forward with a transaction that you should just walk away from.

want to go forward with the deal, as opposed to cancelling if the lender offers you a less desirable interest rate or other terms. Those are the terms you should insert.

The first is where you are depending on getting a mortgage, but, for whatever reason, your efforts fail. While no one can force you to close when you don’t have the money, you can all too easily lose your earnest money deposit, which, in a Sellers’ market like today’s, tends to be large.

Next, understand that you will not have the protection of this contingency if you don’t follow all of the requirements spelled out. Be sure to read and understand them all. You have a deadline for making application for a loan (a complete application, that is, with all information required by the lender). There is a deadline for receiving your mortgage commitment, and if you fail to give notice that you haven’t been accepted by then, you can lose the benefit of the contingency.

To make sure you have the right to walk away without losing your deposit should financing fail, it is important to do the paperwork right, and fulfill all of your duties as you go through the process. First of all, make sure you clearly show on the contract that you are using a loan for part of the purchase price, and put the actual amount of the loan you will be seeking on its face (paragraph 2(c) of the FAR/BAR contract). Surprisingly, I have seen contracts where that number was not filled in!

12

MAY 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Next, you should be certain that the box in Paragraph 8(b) is checked, to make clear that you are relying on a mortgage contingency to protect yourself. That, too, is sometimes skipped in the rush to submit an offer on property that is drawing a lot of attention and offers. Every year this language gets a little longer and more involved, but each blank should be filled in. Before you state the mortgage terms you wish to make a contingency, you should ask yourself the following question: What are the WORST mortgage terms (if they were the best you could get) where you would still

If your real estate agent or lender isn’t helping you understand and meet all these very detailed requirements, you are headed for trouble! You might want to talk to a real estate lawyer. For Adults: I like to think of our local theme

parks as a really great weekday date and summer camp. Busch Gardens, Legoland, Disney are the best known, but what about a dolphin sighting cruise, a sightseeing sunset cruise, a catamaran adventure or a golf holiday at Innisbrook? My summer camp day trips rotate among Sarasota’s Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary, fishing off the Venice Pier, touring the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens or Mote Marina. A museum docent tour at The Dali, an acting or improv class at American Stage or learning to make beer with a craft brewer floats my boat. Dozens of new fitness and sports challenges await your eager spirit, with classes around town – paddle boarding, fishing, Pilates, beach yoga and ziplining. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2021

Hanging Around By Caron Schwartz Sometimes a girl just wants to have fun. So, when I saw that

For our first adventure we checked out the murals from the 2020 SHINE festival. Armed with a printout of the map on the St. Pete Arts Alliance website, we took off down the Pinellas Trail toward St. Pete. I knew to keep “Hey guys, come on out and play!” an eye on the battery, so we’d have enough juice for the return trip. So we stuck with murals in and around Central Ave. First up was iBOMS’s “Where the Bloom Begins” on the Grand Central Brewhouse. I’d seen photos, but they don’t prepare you for the different textures the artist infused into the wall, especially the glittering teeth. While there, Julius tried to befriend a posse of e-scooters, but they couldn’t escape their corral. Next was Nneka Jones and Bianca Burrows’s “The Global Currency” on the Goodyear Rubber building. A commentary on social injustice, the mural exudes sadness and anger. We rode along 1st Ave. N. looking for the murals there. We saw some old ones but were frustrated at not being able to find the 2020 additions. Meanwhile, Julius was intrigued by the arrays of rental bikes we passed. “When I grow up I want to be a Coast bike,” he confided.

“When I grow up I want to be a Coast bike.”

I needed a break. Locking a lonely Julius at a bike rack, I enjoyed amazing pistachio non-dairy ice cream at Plant Love.

With the battery display at about half, it was time to head home. We cruised Central Ave until turning south to Gulfport, wandering through a neighborhood we later found out was Westminster Heights. Before long we popped back onto the Pinellas Trail and the spur into Gulfport. What a fun day! French Style: Toujours Paradise

O

Our beaches are better than Cannes.

We can rock a beret with our swimsuit and tan lines. And Pinellas County features some incroyable French cuisine and desserts. What better time than summer to live the French lifestyle, starting with a morning croissant and ending the evening with French bubbly at Flute & Dram? FRENCH LIFESTYLE: It’s easy to incorporate French life into our daily routine. Begin at home by sitting down to your meal unplugged. No rushing. Stop small talk and start discussions. Walk more and cook fresh meals from local markets and boutiques. Say oui to new adventures. Don ballet flats, a crisp white shirt or an LBD with pearls. Less is more. Arrange fresh flowers on your tables and bedside and stop stressing about the little things. Live and let live, que sera sera. Play music (jazz, classical, Django Reinhardt) and enjoy a café au lait and chocolate daily. For French décor, shop Vintage Marche, Left Bank boutique, Designer Consigner (Chanel) Simply Chic and ReTreat. FRENCH DESSERTS: My mom in New Jersey loves the vanilla lavender and pina colada macarons from Bradenton’s Macoranage which I order online at www.lovemacaronage.com. Take home dessert from the French restaurants or pop over to these delightful shoppes featuring French treats: Café Soleil, Cassis Bakery, Gateau O Chocolat, Le Macron French Pastries, Wandering Whisk (order online), Swah-Rey, William Dean and Alesia. Coming to Corey Ave. is CoCo Addiction, hand-crafted French chocolates. FRENCH VINO: French wines do not need to be expensive. We’ve found some great deals for Sancerre at Trader Joe’s and Rolling Oats. For tastings, check out Vino Simpatico’s events on FB. FRENCH RESTAURANTS: From the onion soup to the pate, pommes frites to coq au vin, I love every dish in our local French bistros. I often pick up pate, wine and brie at Trader Joe, Fresh Market and Bella Vino for a picnic at the Florida Botanical Garden, with a lavender centerpiece and my Pandora playing Josephine Baker. We look forward to the re-opening of La Croisette in May, with an expanded patio and French-inspired dishes. Here are some of our faves:

By Nanette Wiser

Alsace French Bistro: Charming décor and authentic dishes, from quiche at brunch to specials (mussels with frites), crepes, Croque Monsieur, duck a l’orange and savory beef bourguignon. Tierra Verde Bacchus Wine Bistro: Dine on foie gras, escargots, steak au poivre, pate, lobster salad, charcuterie, smoked salmon, tuna carpaccio or take-home dishes, French wines, cheese and more. Happy hour 4-7pm with small plates (4.50) and vino specials. DTSP

Chez Colette’s French Bistro: A petite jewel, with joyful crepes, fragrant onion soup, charcuterie, duck leg confit and seafood pasta Cognac flambe (scallops, shrimp). Belleair

traditional Euro Brasserie fare and American classics with a French twist. We love the bouillabaisse, heirloom tomato tarte, salmon and tenderloin, styled with flair. DTSP

Flying with Jerome: Tues.-Sun., this hideaway serves hedonistic pastries, homemade breads, French crepes, croissant French toast and a puff pastry filled with asparagus, poached eggs, bacon, hollandaise sauce. Clearwater Gulf Bistro: The best coq au vin, seafood gratinee, duck and lobster bisque in town with stand-out specials (Snapper Provencale, Scallops Au Saffron) and my fave, sauteed pork tenderloin topped with brie cheese in a berry sauce. Madeira Beach The Left Bank Bistro: Charming patio and interiors, stunning cocktails, live jazz, happy hour Mon.-Fri. 3-6pm and delectable small plates such as grilled shrimp, duck foie gras, escargot and unique mussels and seafood presentations. St. Petersburg

Café De Paris Bakery: Pick up your pastries, baguettes and café for a beach picnic or enjoy breakfast or lunch at the cafe. Indian Rocks Beach Café Largo: Chef Dominic’s boutique French wines, delectable appetizers, sensational entrees (tournedos of beef tenderloin, seafood) and chocolate souffle are my personal favorites. White linen table, French music and casual elegance is the catch of the day. Largo

Cassis: The ultimate alfresco lunch/dinner/ brunch hotspot and artisan cocktail rendezvous on Beach Drive, Chef Duclut combines

Marquise Café: Shirred eggs oven baked with bacon, cheese and heavy cream with baguette and side salad, quiche, crepes, Nicoise salad or the Parisian Sandwich (baguette, salted butter, ham old-style, unsweet French pickles) light up your day like the Eiffel Tower at night. Pasadena Parts of Paris: Make a pilgrimage for the rack of lamb with blueberry/mint chutney, vegetarian cassoulet and fish of the day. Start off with the braised octopus served with couscous, crispy wafers and wasabi sauce. Safety Harbor P. S. We dedicate this story to our publishers’ French cat Sammy, rescued from New Orleans postKatrina. Sammy loves his morning fresh catches by Papa Pete. Sammy is a chartreaux, a pedigree that dates back to French royalty. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2021

Tourism Revival on the Beaches with New Tourist Hotels and Restaurants

Story by STEVE TRAIMAN As we edge out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the busy tourist season has been extended by what some in the tourism business are calling a “Perfect Storm for Florida Tourism”– probably not the best choice of words with a “worse than usual hurricane season expected.” The combination of cabin fever, cheap flights, warm weather travel restrictions elsewhere, stimulus money, and the #1 US Beach award from TripAdvisor has led to a windfall for our local hoteliers and restauranteurs. At the same time, renovations and new construction are occurring and plans are being made.

ST. PETE BEACH

The Former Grand Plaza is now the Bellwether Beach Resort

The former Grand Plaza Hotel at 5250 Gulf Blvd., the tallest structure on SPB, originally opened in 1975 with magnificent views of the Gulf of Mexico, the city and Tampa Bay. It will reopen in mid-June as the new Bellwether Beach Resort, part of the Benchmark Resorts & Hotels Group. Features include a wide variety of resort amenities with four restaurants highlighted by a rooftop venue, four bars, a beachfront pool, beach services and more. Only Bongo’s Beach Bar has been open to the public during renovations.

20

MAY 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Under the conceptual plan presented to the City Commission the current Miramar facility at 4200 Gulf Blvd., a one and two story 27-room motel-type structure built in 1953, will be demolished to make way for a six-story, luxury resort. The new Miramar Beach Resort includes 54 rooms and a rooftop lounge, which will be accessible to the public. Ronnie Galant, Miramar’s VP of operations, said the reimagined and recreated Miramar will include many in-house amenities, including a fitness center, indoor and outdoor dining on its main floor, and a rooftop pool and lounge. Along with resort guests, the public will be invited to enjoy the gulffront restaurant or rooftop lounge, and may be offered memberships to the new fitness center. The lobby of the new Miramar resort will feature both a covered and open outdoor dining area with a lounge facing the gulf, along with a full-service indoor lobby restaurant and tavern. He noted the developers, including Kevin Bowden, recently opened their larger Cambria Hotel in Madeira Beach with a rooftop bar amenity that presents acoustic music at reasonable hours, and there have been no complaints. The Titan Global Group of investor developers, a local familyowned company that did an amazing job rebuilding St. Pete Beach Suites just north of Upham Beach in the boutique hotel district, has hit a home run with their latest project: The Saint Hotel that opens in early May at 7201 Sunset Way. Its restaurant, 82 Degrees, offering full-service for breakfast, lunch and dinner, opens later in the month. The hotel’s key amenities include 19 suites, both efficiencies and 1-bedroom units, all with kitchenette and either Gulf, courtyard or pool views. There’s also a hot tub, several fun courtyard games, and a spa, with free use of the hotel’s bikes, beach wagons, pool towels, and beach chairs.

The former Sloppy Pelican/Shark Tales was rebuilt and reopened as Buoy’s Waterfront Bar & Grill at 677 75th Ave. one of the most coveted Gulf Beaches coastal areas. With boat docks soon to be repaired and more to come. Buoys is one of the unique places you can dock your boat and enjoy lunch or dinner with small town vibes while you mingle with the locals, and enjoy chef-inspired fare with island inspired ingredients to hand crafted cocktails by our mixologists. They strive to provide a relaxing, enjoyable dining experience in a friendly, fun and family-oriented atmosphere. Buoy’s is open daily from 8am to 11pm with no reservations required. What was once Charlie’s Oasis, Philthy Phil’s, Twisted Tarpon, and Crab Daddy’s is now the Toasted Monkey, relocated from its former Howard Johnson’s site on Gulf Blvd. to 678 Corey Ave. on the west end of SPB. Their waterfront location is just south of Buoy’s and both restaurants are co-owned with the Reef. That Howard Johnson’s site was bought by OTO Development in December 2019 and was thoroughly rebuilt. It reopens May 10 as the new Hilton Garden Inn, with 136 rooms, a heated outdoor pool and beachfront bar and grill serving inspired cuisine all day. Long-time breakfast/lunch landmark Beverly’s La Croisette at 7401 Gulf Blvd. was sold to French couple Mickael and Natalie and will reopen later this spring as “La Croisette.” Commenting on the new hotel and restaurant activity, Mayor Al Johnson told Paradise News, “Resort reconstruction on St. Pete Beach is taking off and, with it, improvements to supporting businesses like restaurants and bars. The surge in tourism activity has much to do with easing the restrictions caused by the coronavirus but, for SPB, this activity is exaggerated. It is a response to the wastewater system capacity improvement project that began in October 2020. The maxed-out system resulted in a 2016 building moratorium on multi-unit projects until capacity is increased. With the sewer project currently underway construction permits can now be issued. “Redevelopment of the tourism infrastructure in St. Pete Beach is very much needed. Various projects have been discussed with city staff who have educated developers to the limitations on unit density, building height, etc. contained in our Comprehensive Plan. No project discussed is allowed to exceed the plan’s limitations – it is the governing document. Once completed, the sewer project will support the full scope of that plan. “It’s an exciting time in SPB! The city is executing and completing infrastructure projects and guiding private development that will renew our island paradise for the enjoyment of our residents and visitors alike. Being blessed to be named #1 US Beach doesn’t mean we can’t improve – I believe even the best can improve and we are doing exactly that!”

MADEIRA BEACH Cambria Hotels, a Choice Hotels upscale brand, celebrated the grand opening of its third property in the Sunshine State with

the opening of the Cambria Hotel St. Petersburg-Madeira Beach Marina last December. On hand were Madeira Beach Mayor John Hendricks and City Manager Robert Daniels, and Janis Cannon, senior VP for Choice upscale brands. Located on the waterfront in MB Town Center at 15015 Madeira Way, the hotel offers stylish accommodations and amenities that include breathtaking ocean views, a rooftop infinity pool and rooftop bar, an elevated courtyard and fitness center. Some waterfront guest rooms include private balconies, and all offer free WiFi and Bluetooth connections. Town Center offers easy access to some of the waterfront’s best shopping, dining, beach activities and entertainment—all within walking distance. And the hotel is less than two miles from John’s Pass, Pinellas County’s top visitor attraction. The Schooner, a 42-unit hotel at 14500 Gulf Blvd., has been described as one of the last remaining “old school Florida hotels in Madeira Beach.” It would be redeveloped as The Schooner Resort, a seven-story building with a 56-room hotel, restaurant and resort services on the west side of Gulf Boulevard with a two-story parking garage above retail space on the east side. Kevin Bowden, a veteran hotel developer and one of the partners who operates the Schooner, said the project would cost between $25 to $28 million. Bowden hopes to break ground later this year. Construction would take about 14 months with opening projected for February 2023.

TREASURE ISLAND Mayor Tyler Payne is excited to see the move of all city departments to the new City Hall Center, built in the

transformed former Allied Insurance building at 10451 Gulf Blvd. Some of the cost is unseen, but necessary in a modern era where officials have to plan for the unforeseen and unthinkable. It is designed to define the city’s character, be ADA accessible, secure, welcoming and easy to navigate, Stacy Boyles, assistant public works director, told city commissioners in December 2019. It will incorporate safety features that a small island city never had to imagine or budget for years ago. The building will have a number of security cameras and card readers at certain doors used by staff, but no metal detectors at public entrances. City Manager Gary Brumback, who is retiring June 1, said there is “a lot of staffing associated with (metal detectors); it’s much bigger than just detecting metals, and has no use unless there is somebody there to prevent something bad happening if the metal’s found.” ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2021

The new Treasure Island City Hall

Boyles told commissioners planners are studying sustainability and have listed initiatives in both construction and operations. Some of the details involve “how we are going to procure the items like having requirements for recycled composite materials, engineered wood and things like that,” she said. The third floor will be renovated at the same time as the second and fifth floors. Partial renovation will be done on the fourth floor to bring it up to building code, with items such as installing a sprinkler system and removing the drop ceiling along with some of the walls and flooring. The fifth floor will be utilized as a community space that can be rented for events, meetings and provide much-needed programming space for the recreation department. It boasts a beautiful view of the Gulf, the downtown corridor and Treasure Island Park, and features multiple-sized rooms for classes or meeting spaces for community groups and activities. It is also home to one larger premier event space with a catering kitchen, making it an attractive venue for a variety of functions. Entrance to the new City Hall Center will be on the east side of the building at Treasure Island Park. Visitors can take an elevator or stairs to the second-floor customer service lobby. “Beyond the lobby is the Commission Chamber that overlooks the beach, and the Community Development Department is to the other side of the lobby,” Boyles said. “The next floor up is the staff working floor, with a primarily open floor plan, 22

MAY 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

designed to keep staff located in close proximity for efficiency and collaboration. The workspaces have been designed with flexibility, keeping in mind the potential needs of the future workforce,” she explained. In addition to the new City Hall Center, the ghost town on the south side of John’s Pass is coming back to life. The site of the former Gator’s Café, a vacant symbol of the coronavirus pandemic, is about to become the 11th restaurant on the Beachside Hospitality Group roster, opening May 1 under the name Crabby’s on the Pass. “Everything came together on this, and we were able to work out a great deal. We’re so excited to be in Treasure Island,” said Julia Cassino, director of marketing and events at Beachside. Gator’s, a three-decade legend among Gulf beach restaurants and watering holes, was an early victim of the COVID-19 contagion, closing its doors in March 2020. In October, owners announced the shutdown would be permanent. Known for its Florida Gators football watch parties, boisterous Sunday livemusic events and stunning views of the Gulf, John’s Pass and the drawbridge, the facility took advantage of its surroundings with floor-to-ceiling windows and indoor-outdoor seating to become a favorite among locals and tourists. The boat-up docks will remain, and there will be a fish filleting station and indoor space for banquets, weddings and corporate events. Beachside has been steadily expanding from its Clearwater stronghold, where it operates Crabby’s Bar & Grill, Crabby’s Dockside, Salty’s Island Bar & Grill and the Salty Crab North Beach. It also has restaurants in several other Florida cities. Editor’s Note: Special thanks to St. Pete Beach Mayor Al Johnson, Cambria Hotels spokesman Kevin Bowden, Madeira Beach Mayor Tyler Payne, City Manager Gary Brumback and Stacy Boyles, assistant public works director, The Saint Hotel spokesperson Lori Natkes, and earlier articles from the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Bay Newspapers and St. Pete Catalyst. Wendy Costa I discovered St. Pete newcomer Wendy Costa on Facebook. Her whimsical paintings mesmerized my imagination. “Sometimes you’re the windshield and sometimes you’re the fairy mistaken for the bug,” welcomes you to her FB page. Delicate shoes a la Kinky Boots, midnight dragonflies, artichoke gowns and elegant ladies sipping café, her drawings are a mix of Chagall and Chopin – both dreamy and elegant. Costa started her design business in 1987 in upstate New York. After completing her degree in fine art, she started her business hand painting porcelain clay; 35 years later, her studio has seen many transitions, latest of which is a move to Saint Petersburg. Very clever idea that my 94-year-old mother resuscitated at her assisted living as a discussion group. I am hooked on Bijoux Bios by Hammond and fellow lover of stories Jaye Ann Terry and follow them on FB and their free e-newsletter; sign up at www.bijouxbios.blogspot.com. Hammond and Terry believe that every piece of jewelry has a story, and like StoryCorps, their blog celebrates both a life well lived and a bygone era. Their interviews are thoughtful

and illuminating. In one blog on watches, they write: “I’ve worn a watch every day for as long as I can remember, usually in the Timex family. I’ve always had a watch and used as the primary way to tell time even after I could use my phone for that purpose as well. But I never thought of watches collectible jewelry – until I interviewed Paul Brown about his watch collection.” “The real value of the jewelry is the connection they have with our parents,” said Brown in the blog, quoted in part here: Paul Brown received his first watch, a digital, when he was seven or eight, but his fascination with watches began with a Swatch. Remember the Swatch? Launched in 1983 in Switzerland, the Swatch product line – Swatch is a contraction of “second watch” – was offered as casual, disposable accessories. The originals (different models are still offered by the Swatch Group) had an open case back, a transparent cover on the

Brown’s collection now includes six watches valued at more than $20,000. They are unique, automatic wind-ups as opposed to the quartz watches most of us wear that run on batteries. “That watch was enormous on my wrist,” Paul recalls. “Honestly, it was a bit of a status symbol. As a young guy, I wanted to wear it to impress my friends.” Paul’s dad got the Omega Constellation for his father during his tour as a Marine sniper in Vietnam. When Paul’s grandfather died, his father inherited the watch and now it’s been passed down to Paul. And the Rolex? His dad gave it to him on his wedding day in 2002. Paul was 24. His dad passed away six years later. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2021

Home Cooking . . . Coast Brothers To The Rescue By Peter Roos Home cooks, look no further than Coast Brothers online for cooking and cleaning products. It’s a local success story and a win-win for consumers.

CoastBrothers.com and their sister company, BuyItByTheCase.com, are e-commerce companies with 30+ years in the Tampa Bay area. Coast Brothers pivoted during the pandemic from a local distribution company that sold and delivered products to local businesses to national distribution to consumers and businesses online. The company’s owners, Steven Collins and his son Patrick, knew what they were doing. Business skyrocketed and there is something on their website that will help you clean and cook without going to the store. Patrick says that the e-commerce business potential amazes him. Brand recognition and loyalty of customers to certain American brands also impresses him. Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches and

Ronny Dee and the Superstars

Taylor Reed

In mid-April, St. Pete local Rod Wave had the No. 1 album SoulFly on the Billboard 200, displacing Justin Bieber. SoulFly is the third studio album from the 21-year-old singer and rapper, real name Rodarius Green, released March 26. Green attended St. Petersburg’s Lakewood High School. Previously this month, Rod Wave had two singles from SoulFly on the Billboard Hot 100, Street Runner (No. 32) and Tombstone (No. 82). You can catch Taylor Reed all over town, from the markets to the Hideaway. The pop, RnB, neo-soul artist tours regionally and nationally, channeling her natural creativity and spontaneity through a looping station, building an elegantly layered, engrossingly soulful sound. Weaving violin melodies through groove-infused creations, her music elevates any space. Her formative influences range from innovative icons such as Sade, Coldplay and Mary J. Blige, to classical pillars like Johann Sebastian Bach, cutting her teeth as a violinist in a gypsy jazz improv troupe showcasing in downtown Ybor City. 28

Sea Turtle Protection

St. Pete’s Eco-Friendly Toolkit

Marine turtle nesting and hatching occurs each year from May 1Oct. 31. Female turtles come ashore in the dark, dig a hole using their flippers, and lay 100 to 150 eggs at a time. During the course of a season, a single female lays three to eight nests. After a 45-to-70-day gestation period, hatchlings emerge from the nest at night and follow the moonlight reflecting off the Gulf. Sea turtles can become disoriented from lights and illuminated objects visible from the beach. Most importantly, bright lights disorient hatchlings by attracting them inland where they often die of dehydration, predation, or are run over by motor vehicles. It is very important that occupants and managers of beachfront properties minimize the lights that shine directly on the beach. Information about turtle friendly beach lighting at www.myfwc.com.

The city’s Eco-Friendly Business Toolkit assists businesses and customers to cut plastic use. The first toolkit module is available and outlines why regulating single-use plastics is necessary, summarizes ordinance information and suggests next steps for businesses. Eliminating plastic straws (2019-2020) and single use plastic and Styrofoam are part of the sustainability plan. Why limit plastic consumption? Straws and stirrers are the fifth most common plastic in ocean clean-ups. Some 500 million plastic straws are used each day in the U.S. 700 marine species are affected, and millions of marine animals are killed each year by marine plastic. When plastic ends up in our waterways, it doesn’t go “away.” It breaks down into smaller pieces of plastic that are consumed by marine life, animals and humans. www.stpete.org/sustainability

Hurricane Prep Hurricane season runs from June 1-November 30, but locals know storms can form any time of year, from tornados to gusty thunderstorms. In 2020, Tropical Storm Arthur and Bertha occurred in May. It’s everyone’s responsibility to be prepared with a game plan that includes obtaining a proof of residence emergency permit if you live on the barrier beaches so you can return after a storm. This year is likely to be busier than average. The 2021 Atlantic Basin Storm names are Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Elsa, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Julian, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor, Wanda…and we hope not to see the Greek alphabet in play for the 2021 storm season. • Know your evacuation zone • Create an emergency supplies kit and stock up. Remember your pets’ needs too. • Have a list of important documents and medications • Think about finances - have extra cash available in the event of power outages • Write your hurricane plan and review with the family • Review your insurance policies • Strengthen your home • Get your emergency access permit. www.pcsoweb.com/emergency-access-permit With so many people moving here from other places, including non-tropical locations, hurricanes may seem like a fairy tale. Because it’s important to be prepared, Paradise News is aggregating useful government links, contacts and other information on the website for readers to consult in addition to Pinellas County’s guide at www.pinellascounty.org/emergency/default.htm#hurricaneguide.

That leaves a family with investments that may or may not increase the family portfolio depending on how the stock market, bonds, or mutual funds may rise or fall during certain periods. What to consider. Real estate investments in a population growth state like Florida have traditionally been a very sound investment. It is true that Are you INVESTING or SPENDING. . . that is the question! investments in real estate like vacant property could When you purchase a new energy-efficient diminish in value over home along the Florida beaches, built above the years depending upon your investment the flood plain, with new hurricane standards acumen. However, the historic tables clearly and today’s updated amenities, are you show that over time residential real estate “spending” money or actually “investing” in Florida consistently increases in value those dollars? Most families don’t fully and offers a good return of capital when the understand the difference when it comes to family decides to sell. This is especially true seeing their savings being transferred into with new homes constructed with the newest another cash outlay. Large ticket items like cars, boats, probably an exception to the rule of motorhomes and the like, while very increased valuation. enjoyable, are surely expenditures that will never be fully recouped. The question of liquidity should also be

addressed. Can your Florida home be immediately sold should a family emergency or medical problem require cash? In most cases it does take months to put your home on the market and complete a sale of your home. However, options are available in the case of a quick cash need such as a conventional mortgage or even a reverse mortgage to replenish your cash position when immediate cash is needed. Historically, your home probably increased in value over a period of time, so borrowing either short or long term normally would be easy. This is precisely why so many families are now working with builders to replace their existing home to increase their investment potential. These families also gain the benefit of the security that comes with a new home that meets the 150 MPH wind that could accompany a hurricane, as well as enjoying a new kitchen, flooring, baths and all the new home amenities that are available today. Just maybe that new home “Investment” is a good idea after all, both for the complete enjoyment of the new home environment as well as future profit potential! HEALTH & WELLNESS One of the Least Embarrassing Things You Should Talk to Your Doctor About “Mental health is just as legitimate an issue as blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes.”

Experience the Difference with

Ryan L. Baker, M.D. Family Medicine

Primary-care physicians often find themselves on the frontline of recognizing and diagnosing mental health issues in their patients, especially depression. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, more and more patients, especially patients with depression, are receiving psychiatric treatment from primary-care physicians. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and research has found that mental health disorders are so common that an estimated one out of five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness, but less than half of those seek and receive treatment. “Many patients think there’s a stigma associated with mental health or depression,” says Family Physician Ryan Baker, M.D., FAAFP. “Mental health is just as legitimate an issue as blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes, especially during this last year or so, with COVID-19 and the pandemic.” Dr. Baker says he has seen a definite uptick of patients, especially the Medicare-age demographic, coming into his office with signs of depression. “It’s the isolation and the loss of social interaction,” he explains. “It really takes a toll on some people, but it can and should be addressed.” A depression screening is just one part of the annual wellness visit, where you talk with your primary-care provider about how you’re doing, along with discussing all of your preventive care. Dr. Baker estimates that about half of the depression screenings he administers reveal signs of depression. “Depression manifests itself in a lot of different ways,” he says. “Fatigue, loss of interest in activities, sleeping problems, loss of appetite, even guilt. These all can be signs of depression. It’s not always the classic, ‘I feel sad.’” The depression screening includes a questionnaire that you complete yourself or with the help of your doctor. This questionnaire is designed to indicate if you are at risk or have symptoms of depression. If your results show that you may be at risk for depression, your doctor will perform a thorough assessment and refer you for follow-up mental health care if appropriate. “We can start treatment right away. Either medication or therapy, or a combination of both, which most often has the best results.” Poor mental health can have a negative impact on physical health and well-being. Research shows a strong relationship between depression and several diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, immune system response, and substance abuse. Dr. Baker says he sees it across the board, and patients should feel comfortable talking to him about any issue, physical or psychological. “There’s a long list of embarrassing things that you already talk to your primary-care provider about. Depression shouldn’t be any different.” Just as your physical health depends on your relationship with your primary-care provider, so too does your mental health. Neuropathy Breakthrough The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs. These drugs such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta and Neurontin may reduce your symptoms but are primarily antidepressant drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable or drowsy and can cause a variety of side effects.

1

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitation balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in the figure above, the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased and then they shrivel up. This prevents the nerves from getting the needed nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to "die", they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms.

Loss of blood flow causes nerve damage and pain.

The main problem is that your doctor may have told you to just live with the problem or try the medications. There is now a facility here in St. Petersburg that offers you hope without taking medications with side effects. Our treatments help increase blood flow that stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves. This provides the nerves proper nutrients to repair them. The amount of treatment varies from person to person. We determine this by doing a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation.

“Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.” – Mark Twain “Everybody But Us” by Ben Rose is definitely the book to take to the beach this summer. The Treasure Island resident’s debut novel has garnered good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads and is available online at Amazon and Tombolo Books. A transplanted Floridian who has travelled extensively by bus, car, freight train, Amtrak, and foot, Ben was born in Oregon at the tail end of the ’60s. His travels began in his formative years during which time he developed a love of cheap motels and greasy spoons. Such locales are a mainstay of his literary offerings. Ben is an ally to the LGBTQ+ Community, a supporter of human rights, and a believer in racial and gender equality. As one with Asperger’s, GAD, and PTSD, Ben has seen his share of hard traveling, abuse, and bullying which is reflected in his literary works.

Save Money on Meds: It pays to shop pharmacies for prices on your meds and include mom-and-pop shops in your comparison shopping. An app like GoodRx can help you compare prices and offers coupons for their 70,000 pharmacies in its network. You can also ask your pharmacist if there are manufacturer coupons. Some brand-name drugs offer patient-assistance programs. And even Fido gets a discount; Publix added a number of tick and other medications to its free/reduced meds list. While spring cleaning, be sure to get rid of expired medications or items that you no longer need including vitamins, which can lose their potency. And when picking up your medications, be sure to doublecheck to make sure the dosage is correct.

Get Fit: If your modern life involves too much sitting and clicking and not enough standing and moving; if your body is sending regular messages involving neck, back or foot discomfort and/or restricted mobility, then give Pilates/ Contrology a try! The Pilates School owner Lyn Wilkinson moved The Pilates School from Cape Cod to St. Petersburg. Her state-of-the art St. Petersburg studio offers both virtual classes and starting June 1 in-studio classes with no more than four people in the studio. They installed all new air cleaning systems and re-arranged the studio equipment for socially distanced workouts and the staff is fully vaccinated. May Health Holidays: Change your outlook on aging for Older Americans month. Research shows that if you believe your later years will be happy and healthy, you may live longer thanks to the mind/body connection. Challenge yourself to learn new things, try out brain-training games, engage in 10-minute audio guided mindful meditation (AARP/Silver Sneakers or other apps) and commit to moving your body every day. Staying social (virtual or in-person) or getting a fur-baby can ease loneliness, which can contribute to mental and physical decline. Finally, even if you can’t go out, bring nature in with nature videos/programs and even webcams for zoos and parks/preserves.

Protect Your Peepers: It’s also Healthy Vision month, so be sure to exercise and protect your vision with polarized or UV-protection sunglasses. Exercise can reduce blood vessel overgrowth, which contributes to macular degeneration and other eye diseases. Stepping away from the screen and using eye drops to deal with dry eye is important. Be sure to purge your mascara every three months and clean contact lenses properly. Eating and drinking eye-friendly colorful veggies/fruits (carrot/beet/apple or spinach/kale/berry) and maintaining a healthy weight and low-sugar diet can help. An annual check-up is essential. And while you’re summarizing your eye routine, be sure to slather on that sunscreen.

A Life Well Lived

By Peter Roos

Zelda Troiano was a special woman. We were introduced by Richard Seviur, a veteran weather forecaster from the second war, and fellow publisher who had started newspapers for several local communities, including Feather Sound, Davis Island and Tierra Verde. At the time, Richard was a healthy 90something year-old, who was working on a book with a working title “How to stay healthy to 100 years old.” He was researching at the St. Pete Beach Library, where he had recruited a volunteer to type his handwritten manuscript. Richard and I were friends and colleagues, and Richard raved about what a treasure Zelda was on several occasions. As she was completing his manuscript, Richard turned Zelda over to me, saying she needed a new project. That was the best thing Richard ever did for us. We met in March, and Zelda enthusiastically accepted the challenge of updating the Paradise NEWS Arts & Leisure and Events section each issue, starting in April 2017. Over the ensuing months and years, as Zelda’s long-time husband declined and passed away, her three daughters, Amy, Emily and Liz, each visited at least annually. COVID-19 came and went, changing everything. She celebrated her 76th birthday in February and Zelda turned in her “column” religiously, right on schedule. Last month, on March 21, 2021, Zelda turned in her April column saying, “someone else needs to do the proof my column this month. I’ve been feeling lousy all month and I am going in the hospital for a few days to find out why.” When I emailed to ask how she was a few days later, her daughter Amy answered. She was not doing well. They had to stabilize her just to do a biopsy. She was soon diagnosed with liver cancer that had spread, and before the month was over, she was gone. Amy told me her folks made a courageous move to Florida in the mid-eighties, to satisfy dad’s dream to live on the water. They loved it here. “Just Another Day In Paradise” was practically their motto. After Zelda retired as a guidance counselor, she wanted to stay busy and volunteered with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Amy had been a page at the library during high school, and her sisters followed her footsteps. Zelda followed their example too. It led her into her work with Paradise NEWS. The girls all agree that was a blessing for Zelda and the whole family.“ When we came to visit, Mom knew EVERYTHING that was going on in the entire area, and we benefitted from that knowledge. Her work ethic never faltered. Even at 75, she would say “I need some time to work on my column.” The universe seems to bring us the people we need when we need them. This is our acknowledgement to the contributions of Zelda Troiano over the past four years. Rest in peace Zelda. We love you. 46

Centerpiece installation “Breath of Influence” features rows of long paper strips radiating from a 12-foot ring that sway and rustle as you pass by, suggesting how even small and seemingly banal actions affect the environment. www.creativepinellas.org

His 2018 album detailed his journey from addiction to sobriety and subsequent success. His upcoming album – his 16th – is a tribute to Chuck Berry, with 20 Berry classics performed by Zito and 21 guest guitarists including Joe Bonamassa, Sonny Landreth, and Chuck’s grandson, Charles Berry III. www.SHAMc.org Friday, May 21 – Do It Again 8pm, $29-$49, The Mahaffey Theater, 400 1st St. S, St. Petersburg. Do It Again is a 12-piece ensemble that replicates the sound and vocals of 1970’s rock sensation group Steely Dan. Complete with horns, back-up vocals, and a lead singer who virtually embodies lead vocalist Donald Fagen, Do It Again authentically revives the complex musicality for which Steely Dan was known, bridging jazz, rock and R&B. Online ticket sales only. www.themahaffey.com Saturday, May 22 – Florida West Coast Orchid Society Plant Sale 8-11am, Free, 12211 Walsingham Rd., Largo. PET HEALTH

BEE CAUTIOUS: What to do if Your Pet is Stung Bee stings hurt, but seldom cause severe reactions in dogs. These steps can help soothe the pain. Remove the Stinger Honeybees leave their stingers behind and venom continues to enter your pet’s body for several minutes after a sting unless you remove the stinger. Gently scrape the stinger off with the edge of a credit card. Bathing can dislodge the stinger and help soothe the skin. Treat Pain and Swelling Cold compresses help reduce pain, redness, or swelling. Freezer gel packs, ice in a

By Dr. Scot Trefz, D.V.M. plastic bag, or bags of frozen vegetables make good compresses. Wrap them in a towel to prevent frostbite. Leave it in place as long as your dog will allow but no more than 20 minutes at a time. After a few minutes of cold compresses, most dogs will feel much better and won’t require additional treatment. Oral Benadryl can also be helpful in reducing swelling, but before offering your furry friend the over-the-counter medication, call your veterinarian for their recommendation and get dosage instructions. Pets require different dosages than humans. Severe Reaction Danger Signs Make an emergency trip to your veterinarian or after-hours emergency clinic if you see: pale gums, vomiting, hives, lack of energy, severe swelling, difficulty breathing, collapse problems can also occur if your dog is stung in the nose, mouth, or throat. Although dogs may not be allergic to bees or wasps, stings in these sensitive areas can cause swelling that partially or fully blocks airways, making breathing difficult. Severe swelling in the mouth, nose, throat or neck also warrants

an emergency trip to the veterinarian. How to Prevent Bee Stings Lessen the chance your dog will get stung: • Check for hives and nests • Limit exposure – Keep dogs from smelling flowers • Remove outdoor food promptly – Bees are attracted to sugary food and drinks Bee or wasp stings are little more than a minor, but temporarily painful, nuisance for most dogs. If your pet displays any of the signs mentioned above, or you’re concerned about their symptoms, call your vet! If you enjoyed this article, visit Dr. Scot M. Trefz, DVM – Tierra Verde resident and Medical Director at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital. Burnt Ends Tiki Bar

cocktails, summer shandys and tiki drinks are all the rage Athisrtisan summer. Seeing a Rays home game just got more delicious.

New to the Tropicana Field line-up for 2021 are Beans & Barlour’s boozy desserts and milkshakes including cotton candy and caramel and peanut butter milkshakes. Local faves back at bat are Coppertail Brewing Company and Kahwa Coffee. Upstairs at Dr. BBQ, Burnt Ends Tiki Bar is the newest tropical escape in the EDGE district. Beverage Director and tiki enthusiast Dean Hurst’s brilliant menu of lei’d back classics are delish. His home tiki bar and collection of tiki mugs are just the tip of his passion for craft rum distilleries. He ran the bar program at The Hukilau from 2014 – 2019. His favorite tikis come from a local artist who designs them (www.eekumbookum.com) as well as those collected on his travels. Burnt Ends’ classic tiki cocktail menu is audacious, featuring Mai Tais with Jamaican rum, dry curacao, fresh lime juice and house-made orgeat or the Mr. Bali Hai offering big, bold rum flavors matched with coffee and pineapple notes. We loved the Three Dots and a Dash, an ode to the famed Chicago tiki bar, which stands out for its use of Rhum Agricole, Martinique and Demerara rums, pimento, falernum, orange and lime juices, honey mix and angostura. For non-rum libations, sample the Port Light made with bourbon or Saturn gin-based cocktail with delicious falernum, passionfruit and orgeat.

“Get Sirius About Your Future”

May 2021 Astrology Our second month of spring is underway with plenty of exciting cosmic activity. Communication planet Mercury travels home to Gemini on the 3rd where the expression of logic and reasoning is at its highest. We are restless, changeable, and chatty throughout the rest of the month. Love planet Venus also visits Gemini on the 8th when we become friendly yet detached in matters of the heart. We thrive on change and variety now. Mars travels through home-loving Cancer this month bringing endless energy to family life and attending to projects or repairs. The homefront will certainly be a hub of activity, but watch out for moods and aggravation, too.

With Mercury moving into Retrograde motion on the 29th just three days later another theme of looking into the past occurs. Many things can REsurface during the next three weeks that need to be REviewed and REsolved. With love planet Venus involved, it can certainly be REferring to love and relationships or financial matters that still need to be addressed. REmember; finish things in REtrograde and start new things afterward! TAURUS: Your personal new year begins now! You have been breaking old patterns and are speaking your mind! Financial matters are on your mind as you review and make new plans. Resources are accented, too.

The New Moon in stable Taurus on the 11th begins the lunar cycle this month at a slow, steady pace. We can be creative, have strong willpower, and good concentration in our undertakings. On the 13th, growth planet Jupiter visits artistic, intuitive Pisces for several weeks. This can be a highly creative time, spent often in meditation or introspection. Compassion and understanding are strong as we assist those in need. Inner awareness can occur as we become more in touch with feelings below the surface now.

GEMINI: Your sign is favored and active all month! A new look behind the scenes in your life and you are ready to REset your direction. A spending spree will have consequences. The Full moon accents your relationships!

The Sun moves into Gemini on the 20th, joining Venus and Mercury! With three planets in this changeable sign, variety is truly the spice of life now! We want to socialize and enjoy many experiences. Short trips become a fix for our restlessness and reading or conversations are also pleasurable. The Full Flower Moon in Sagittarius on the 26th is a Lunar Eclipse! It has ties to the eclipses that happened at the end of last year and will bring up the same issues again. We are ready to break away from anything that is interfering with our freedom. We don’t want to be held back in any way and choose to move on whether we have all of the answers at this time or not.

LEO: You are clearing out buried issues on many levels resulting in a new path. Career and position take off in a new direction. Romantic attachments are in the full moon spotlight! Enjoy reconnecting socially and recreation!

PET FRIENDLY RESORTS

MOUNTAIN HIGH Our publishers love to get away from the summer heat to Colorado, so we wanted to find an East Coast drive or fly retreat in addition to typical getaways such as Tennessee or North Carolina. Head to Brattleboro Vermont whose hip, boho-chic downtown district and bucolic surroundings, #LoveBrattleboroVT is “one of the best small towns in America,” with lots to do including events at the Vermont Jazz Center, New England Center for Circus Arts, and Asian Cultural Center; hiking and nature trails; to antiquing and shopping and artisan experiences (pottery and jewelry making) as well as farm-totable dining. For May and June, the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center is showing two, new, not-to-be missed exhibits - Jennifer MackWatkins: Children of the Sun, and Kenny Rivero: Palm Oil, Rum, Honey, Yellow Flowers exhibits at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (now through June 13). Brattleboro truly offers something for everyone with more than 1,000 events each year – including the Harris Hill Ski Jump, Brattleboro Literary Festival, Brattleboro Brewers Festival, Retreat Farm Food Truck Round-Up, monthly First Friday Gallery Walks, and many art, film, music and dance events - the town is always humming with energy.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones

The Secret to Going the Distance . . . Is Really No Secret The “C” word sends a chill down many spines. The “C” word I am referring to is Commitment and it takes you beyond the point of no return.

If the fruition of your vision of a life worth

living awaited you at the top of a mountain, would you have the commitment to traverse the unknown elements between here and there and go the distance? The metaphorical mountaintop experience we seek can be different for us all: It could be the completion of a college education, or the realization of the career we have long desired. It might be honoring a diet or exercise program long enough to see the results we desire manifest. It could be learning how best to just get through another day by managing a debilitating emotional or physical problem in a manner that allows us to stay connected to a life of purpose and meaning. For many of us, the mountaintop for which we dream and strive is a deeply rewarding relationship with a lifetime partner. It doesn’t much matter what mountain peak we seek because the power of commitment is equally applicable (and available) to every area of our lives—and it is the power that will get us to the top.

MAY 2021 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

“The pathway to the top of the mountain is lined with campsites along the way, occupied by those who yielded to the resistance of walking the path of uncertainty and who weren’t able to embody the deeper meaning of commitment to going the distance.” ~ Excerpt from The Art of Uncertainty– How to Live in the Mystery and Love It By example, what I learned from Mom and Dad is that regardless of what your personal mountain may be, and wherever you may be on the pathway at this moment, there is something within you that knows how to get you to the top if you do your part. What is your part, you might ask. • FIRST, enter each day with faith and an awareness of your oneness with a higher power that is larger than yourself—call it God, the Buddha, Nature, the Christ, Life, Infinite Intelligence, the Universe, or

whichever word has meaning to you. • SECOND, approach your chosen pathway with a persistency that has no off switch (like the Energizer Bunny). • THIRD, to echo the words of author Steven Covey, you must “begin with the end in mind”: persevere in holding a vision in your mind’s eye that gives purpose and meaning to your life by seeing yourself standing on the mountaintop. • LASTLY, connect with the passion for life that lives in your heart. Passion is the energy that will bring you to the edge of all you know—it becomes the bridge that spans the gap between where you are on the pathway and where you want to be. When combined, these four things comprise the essence and power of commitment that will take you where you may have never gone before. What I know is this: Irrespective of the personal mountain you might be climbing, the view of your life from the top is unparalleled. You can take a gentle gaze back and see down the pathway from whence you have come with the pride and satisfaction of knowing that you stayed the course . . . you went the distance. These mountaintop moments are among the sweetest experiences you shall ever have in your life, and they are the moments most worth pursuing. Commitment is, and always has been, the secret to going the distance; it’s a choice we get to make daily. Commitment is a prerequisite in creating a life worth living, and it’s a power that is no further from you than your next thought, and then the next thought, and then the next thought, followed, of course, by a corresponding action. Begin with the end in mind, indeed . . . But most importantly, just begin. Peace, Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones Copyright © 2021 - DMJ Presentations LLC www.DennisMerrittJones.com

Over the span of my adult life there have been numerous occasions when I found myself “waffling in the wind” on some commitment I was about to make, or perhaps had already made, and I needed a “sign” to assure me I could do the right thing and go the distance. Sometimes we need a hero or two who have demonstrated the power of commitment in their own lives to show us the way up the mountain. My heroes were my parents, Russ and Evelyn Jones. Up until almost the time they both passed at 95 years young, Mom and Dad

were still like a couple of Energizer bunny rabbits . . . and had been able to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary together a few months prior. Anyway you slice it, creating and sharing a life together for over 75 years is a tremendous example of commitment to an idea that was larger than either of them as individuals. I happen to know firsthand that although they stumbled more than a few times on the many pathways of uncertainty we traveled as a family, they always found the courage, wisdom, and strength to pick themselves up and continue their journey up the mountain with four wild children in tow. That’s what the power of commitment does; it is bigger than our obstacles and it sees us through our uncertainties and the temptations to stop short and pitch a tent before we reach the top of our personal mountains—it’s what keeps us keeping on long after others have pulled off the path and set up camp in the foothills of unfulfilled dreams.
