Is This The New Normal?

PUBLISHERS & EXECUTIVE EDITORS Peter Roos & Renee Roos sales@ParadiseNewsFL.com renee@ParadiseNewsFL.com

In a few short months, life as we knew it has dramatically changed. Is this the new normal? Outgoing gregarious huggers have become masked elbow bumpers, out of necessity for self-preservation.

Nanette Wiser, Executive Editor wiser86@gmail.com

Fears of spreading or contracting the coronavirus have had wide-ranging impact, virtually shutting down tourism, Pinellas County’s biggest industry. The trickle-down effect is evident almost everywhere whenever tourism is impacted, and with COVID-19, even many of our year-round residents have become hermits. While public fireworks displays were cancelled for July 4th, the Republican National Conventionis still planned as a live event in Jacksonville the last week August, while Florida leads the nation in infections in July.

Steve Traiman, Feature Writer traimancreativecopy@gmail.com CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Tom Brodersen • Tom Smith Sarah Lyons • Dennis Merritt Jones Michael Moses, Jr. • Frank Adornato Dr. Scot Trefz, DVM • Capt. Dylan Hubbard Nelson Williams • Amy Walker Ken Ohlrogge • Dr. Les Cole, MD, ABAARM

Social distancing, mask wearing, and self-quarantining continue to be the best ways to avoid getting sick or becoming a spreader. Mask wearing has been ordered for kids who choose to return to classrooms this month. Virtual learning will continue to be offered as an alternative for those who can manage it, likely until a vaccine is widely available. At Paradise NEWS we are all excited, and appreciative to our advertisers that we have been able to continue our 26-year tradition of publishing and distributing more than 30,000 copies 10 times annually. This is the second of two bimonthly summer issues. We return to our monthly frequency in October. We are continuing the outreach we started for our 25th anniversary, introducing Paradise NEWS to a new audience of 5,000 upscale homeowners each issue. While we are still unsure of what lies ahead for the critical snowbird season that starts in October and November and the 2021 tourism season that reaches its height February – April, which was cut short this year as borders started closing, Tampa stadium is ground zero for the Feb, 2021 Superbowl, so let’s pray for a widely distributed vaccine by then. Meanwhile, the highly touted and long-awaited St. Pete Pier has opened, and progress continues on the highly touted but locally unpopular Bus Rapid Transit project that will connect DTSP (downtown St. Petersburg) to St. Pete Beach. Mayors of both South Pasadena and St. Pete Beach have voiced their objections to DOT, from where funding is coming for the project. TBARTA, the Tampa Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority recently unveiled their long-term bus rapid transit project that is proposed to connect Wesley Chapel (New Tampa) to downtown Tampa and Tampa International Airport and continuing to downtown St. Petersburg. Right now it seems like the cart before the horse but if and when that ever happens, the link to the beach will make a lot of sense.

Last year at this time, we thoroughly enjoyed an inside passage cruise to Alaska. Nobody is doing that this year. With our own tourism industry suffering, we can surely sympathize with those who are only reachable by ship and had become used to having 25,000 visitors in port every day. Before the cruise, we got to spend a couple of days in Seattle, where we used the light rail system to get around from the airport area to downtown and found it very helpful. Hopefully we, and future visitors to our area will feel that way about public transportation in Tampa Bay someday.

Anxiety is at the Top of the List By Michael Moses • The Centre-St. Pete Beach

The Centre of St. Pete Beach is a concierge Medicinal Marijuana Centric venue for healing and learning. The Centre of St. Pete Beach is approaching its first anniversary with cautious optimism. As we slowly come out of the “Stay at Home Orders”, we are excited to share two updates with you:

THE CENTRE-ST. PETE BEACH 7525 Blind Pass Road, St. Pete Beach FL 33706 727.258.2001 | www.TheCentreSPB.com

Medicinal Marijuana Get Your Card,

1. Here are the precautionary measures we are taking:

• Visitors and team members are temperature checked and go through a COVID 19 prescreening upon entry • All staff are being tested weekly • Social distancing and masks mandates set by Pinellas County are followed • The Centre is restarting its programs and classes in its spacious facility with CPC (Covid Political Correctness)

2. Thanks to our available space, capacity limit and social

distancing abilities, we are able to offer a safe environment for our team members and visitors. This also allows for a variety of programs such as: • ‘Cannabliss Meditation’ Breathing • Sound Bowls • Kendama • Puff, Pour and Paint • Gummy Making • Chocolate Covered Edibles & more All of the above are offered with the option of CBD. Massage and ‘cupping’ are now offered in a beautiful private massage room. There are fun and interactive classes on infused food and treat making such as medicated gummy and chocolate making. Classes using CBD or Medicinal Grade Cannabis, for licensed patients, is available in a variety of edible options. Below are a few examples of our members who have enjoyed making their own personalized edibles... One of the owners has the chef coat baby figs with CBD infused Dark Belgian Chocolate, (no THC) as an after dinner watching TV or watching the sunset, pre-sleep treat. A local parent has the chef make the same but with mini Oreos to help her young child take less medications. Just last week two groups privately booked our cooking class, a group of 3 and a group of 5. They had a wonderful time while sipping on Mastry’s local micro-brewed beer on tap at The Centre. The group of 5 then ordered in pizza, then stayed and visited with each other. It became a social outing, one they had not had since stay at home orders began. Visit www.thecentrespb.com/calendar or call 727-258-2001. We are starting a data-based Anxiety study. If you are interested in learning ways to self-manage your anxiety, please send us an email at AnxietyStudy@TheCentreSPB.com (CENTRE) and we will add your name to our communication list. Many of our clients are seeing tremendous results. The Centre proudly carries a complete line of Impirica CBD in a variety of forms, plus MUV’s new over the counter CBD line, with some awesome patches to help fight pain in joints and elsewhere with a micro-dose over 3 days. The Centre is also carrying a full line of Nature’s Pet Herbal CBD products that local pet owners are saying are doing wonders for their pets. One new user says her dog calmed right down, no longer barking at passing vehicles, when she started him on a few Tasty Treats. As part of their response to the virus, the Centre has become a source for superior hand sanitizer, masks and clear full-face shields.

TIDBITS

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY With more time on our hands to read, some locals found a way to share books and have enjoyed with PaGWC members and neighbors. In about a week, we will be installing a book exchange box at the back of the Pass-A-Grille Women’s Club house side street for public access (2201 PaG Way – south end of building). Many have come together to bring this idea to life from Al Ingram making the house, Sandie Lyman, and Ariel Grant supplying the lumber, Wayne Dewey, and Herb Edmunds the installation, to Marlene Connelly, Ariel Grant, Jacky Dawson, and Barbara Ottinger painting and decorating it! We want to thank them all for their hard work on this project! Shari Ellis and Marlene Connelly will be stewards of the library. The Little Free Library is a global organization. Our library is registered on the world map. If you go to littlefree library.org you can look up all the libraries in the world. Please see the photos below of our library share box as we work to complete it getting ready for the grand opening next week. We will take needed sanitary precautions for sharing. We would like to start our library with some good adult and children’s books. If you would like to donate any books, please drop them off at the clubhouse and give call to let me know or to make arrangements to meet someone there. When the European Union recently opened its borders post COVID quarantine, the U.S. was not on the EU’s list of countries its residents could visit. It’s also barring Americans from visiting the EU. The U.S. still has its own travel restrictions in place for the EU, too. It’s unclear when any of those restrictions will be lifted. Crist Obtains Key Environmental Funding For Florida, Ban on Offshore Drilling The 2021 Interior & Environment Appropriations bill passed the full committee in July. At Representative Crist’s request, the bill prohibits drilling and seismic testing off the coasts of Florida, including in the eastern Gulf, a policy for which Crist has long advocated. He supports H.R. 205, the Protecting and Securing Florida’s Coastline Act, which would permanently ban drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Included in that bill was over $15 million for Everglades restoration. The 2021 bill includes $9.38 billion for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and $170 million for the National Endowment of the Arts, to help support the arts community that has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. He also helped earmark $14 million to Fight Red Tide and $30 million for Veterans Treatment Courts. Meanwhile, the Trump administration hopes to open the door to oil and gas drilling off Florida’s coast — but will wait until after the November election. Drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico would fulfill a long-sought goal of energy companies, giving them access to potentially billions of barrels of oil that have been off-limits since the federal government withdrew leases it had sold in 1985. But even the possibility of drilling is a politically explosive topic for Floridians, who worry that oil spills would devastate their tourism-based economy in a reprise of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. President Donald Trump, who has set “energy dominance” as a key national goal, has

eased regulations on offshore drilling put in place by the Obama administration. Interior has spent years working on a proposed drilling plan that would expand oil companies‘ access to waters around the country’s coastline, including a draft plan issued in 2018 by the Trump administration that considered opening the federal waters off both of Florida’s coasts and an expansion of offshore drilling in California, a move that would escalate the ongoing battles between the state and the administration over environmental issues since Trump took office.

TAMPA BAY The Real Estate Market remains HOT in our area. The shortage of homes for sale and people’s desire not to vacate during a pandemic combines with record low interest rates to create a sellers market. Local Realtor® Joan Walker shared these “reasons people will relocate during a pandemic” from Florida Realtor Digital News on July 16th. With Americans still reaching retirement age at an incredible pace, and the growing desire to escape the cities, Chicago and Detroit for example, there are more buyers than sellers in our area, making it an excellent time to consider moving somewhere else, but where would you be happy after life in Paradise? 44% Need More Space 41% Purchase Rather Than Rent 37% Move to Suburbs from City 31% Job Relocation 31% Desire for private outdoor space 28% To Be closer to Family and Friends 27% To Downsize 19% For a Better School District 13% Get Away from Apartment or Condo Life 11% Job Loss or Financial Problem

Us hiking up to a volcano on Methana

Freshly engaged, we set off on a world trip in late 2019. Besides soaking up the wonders of the planet, our task was to find a dreamy location for our nuptials. Not content with a six-hour burst of food and dancing, we spent a lot of time scheming a way to make our wedding last as long as possible. After much fussy contemplation, we found ourselves in Greece, in a warm community on the cool Mediterranean. Suddenly, so many questions found answers. Even ones we don’t remember asking! Skipping our outbound flight and extending our visit indefinitely was the first and easiest decision. The second one demanded more of us: Why ever leave? A novel coronavirus sweeping the globe was the immediate answer. But not our final one! Upon our hasty return to the states, after a few months of quarantine, we sold our home and packed our worldly possessions. At about the same time the European Union closed the border to American citizens. Now, as the Greeks say, we are “επί ξύλου κρεμάμενοι” or “hanging on a tree”... sitting and waiting for permission to return to Greece and begin our new lives! Luckily, with generous family and action-packed Florida summer activities, our waiting room has been quite comfortable.

But our eyes and hearts remain in the Hellenic Republic. And on her diverse real estate. When we first explored the countryside, marveling at stunning views, we were struck by the opportunity for a slow, simple, sumptuous life we never knew possible. And now, thanks to sufficient gumption and a prompt sale of our home, we have committed to making it a reality! Instead of a short honeymoon on the Mediterranean, we plan to build a honeymoon life so it never has to end. God willing, if we are on schedule and under budget, we will host a small wedding in the temperate beauty of Spring 2021... flanked by cascading mountains, luscious greenery, and crystal-clear water (and delicious Greek wine!). When world travel resumes, and the world can once again breathe easy, please plan to visit us in the birthplace of western civilization! We will have ample space for guests, and hopefully some olives to harvest.

TAMPA BAY MUSICIANS CREATE MUSIC VIDEO:

“VOICE YOUR VOTE 2020”

A group of Tampa Bay volunteer songwriters, performers, music and video producers and other professional contributors of all ages and ethnicities pooled their talents to write original lyrics and music for a song called “VOICE YOUR VOTE 2020.” The music video, to be released the third week of August, was filmed with six dancers and singers in Ybor City, Curtis Hixon Park, South St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach and is poised to bring Tampa Bay to the national stage with its catchy tune and timely message to all Americans: register and vote November 3. “What is incredible about this project is that it was created by a diverse group of creative folks who did not know each other at the outset and at the outset had never met except on Zoom. We range in age from 16 to 75 years old, the song is in English and Spanish, and the style is dance hall with a bit of rap. What everyone has in common is a shared commitment to encourage fellow Americans to vote!” says St. Petersburg resident Michelle Passoff, who spearheaded the project by making phone calls to local artists and producers from her kitchen table while quarantined. VOICE YOUR VOTE 2020 project organizers invite organizations, community groups, businesses and sponsors to participate in the project by posting the music video on their website and social media and in exchange VOICE YOUR VOTE 2020 will post partner logos and links on its website and social media. Those interested in link sharing with VOICE YOUR VOTE 2020 should contact Michelle Passoff at 813-453-1944 by phone or text. The project website will be launched simultaneously with the music video. Ms. Carson started her company in July of 2019. 2020 has been a difficult time for businesses, especially one that offers what seems a luxury service. The new resort is in a sheltered harbor along the gorgeous intracoastal Waterway. The 72 units, with parking, on seven floors with 1- or 2-bedroom options start from around $400,000. Each will be fully furnished with a beach-modern vibe, ensuring each guest feels right at home. On-site hotel management will ensure easy operation and hassle-free ownership. The luxury resort is a boaters’ paradise, with unit owners having the option to lease or purchase one of the 55 Marina boat slips. Intracoastal cruising is just outside, and for deep sea fishing, the Gulf of Mexico is minutes away out of Clearwater Pass. “SunRunner” will be the first bus rapid transit system in Tampa Bay. The “SunRunner” is the name of the seafoam green bus that Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) revealed in July. PSTA has been in the working stages of its Central Avenue BRT project, a rapid transit connection between downtown St. Pete, through the city of South Pasadena to St. Pete Beach. The name “SunRunner” was chosen as the system connects the “Sunshine City” to St. Pete Beach, the “Sunset Capital of Florida”. PSTA CEO Brad Miller said the “SunRunner” “will act as a train of sorts,” with raised platforms that will allow people in wheelchairs, families with strollers and bike riders to easily hop on and off. Instead of paying upon boarding, riders will be able to pay on their phones or at the pay stations located at each stop. The buses will run every 15 minutes, taking

TBARTA, the Tampa Bay Area Transit Authority, has meanwhile proposed that the BRT route from DTSP to SPB be the terminus of an extensive Bus Rapid Transit system that will connect New Tampa to Downtown Tampa, Tampa International Airport and Downtown St. Petersburg. Trio Transforms a Tired Italian Joint Into a Jazzy Coastal Restaurant-Lounge By Nelson Williams A man walks into a bar looking for work. It’s not the setup of an old joke but the true backstory of Sunset Bistro, Treasure Island’s vibrant new restaurant-lounge. The man is Thomas Mandzik and the bar he walked into in mid-March was Feola’s, a tired Italian joint off the lobby at the Thunderbird Beach Resort. Feola’s owner, Vadim Mun, an ex-banker who had been working seven days a week as chief cook and bottle washer since buying the ristorante in 2018, quickly realized Mandzik knows hotel restaurants. For a decade, the Tampa Bay-born Mandzik had cut his teeth and countless steaks as the head chef at The Tradewinds Island Grand Resort on St. Pete Beach. To be top gun, he bolted the nest in 2017 to become the executive chef at the Hilton Bayfront’s Tangerine. But like millions of others this year, Mandzik found his workplace shuttered due to the pandemic. “I can’t just sit home all day,” he says, “so I took Mun’s offer to bartend.” Overnight, Mandzik created a list of house drinks, including the Florida Martini, a smoky aperitif with vodka, fresh-squeezed blood orange juice, muddled strawberries, a dash of sea salt, and a splash of gin. The owner loved the drink, and his bartender’s drive. “I have to solve every problem I come across,” admits Mandzik. The problem with Feola’s, he notes, was that you can’t throw a garlic knot on the

beach without hitting another Italian eatery. Soon the bartender and owner were bonding over their shared dream of transforming the ho-hum ristorante into a hip hotspot. Mandzik was promoted to general manager and given a delicious decree: Create a serious restaurant with handcrafted Gulf Coast cuisine that segues into a live-music lounge after the sun goes down. So was Sunset Bistro born. “It was all Thomas,” says Mun modestly of morphing Feola’s into Sunset Bistro. “He knew we want locals and tourists to go home with memories of fine Florida food, not Italian.” Mandzik populated an initial menu with Gulf Coast favorites and collaborated with Mun and his wife, Nataliya, on a more polished motif. They dotted the walls with sunset photos and debuted a midnight-blue ceiling flecked with stars and holiday lights. Then they punctuated the sunset theme with yellow leather stools at the U-shaped bar, which overlooks covered al fresco seating and the hotel’s beachfront pool. About this time, a woman walks into the bar looking for a job. Again, it’s no joke, but how Sunset Bistro found its new chef. There was no waitress post open, but the applicant mentioned that her husband had trained at the Cordon Bleu Institute of Culinary Arts in Atlanta and needed a

place to hang his chef’s hat. And so Matthew Janiak, a young veteran who served three tours in Iraq before getting his culinary degree, came to man the kitchen. The chef, who earned his chops cooking for a few of Dickie Brennan’s iconic New Orleans restaurants, plans to keep the popular crab-stuffed mushrooms, blackened mahi mahi, crab cakes, and house burger on the menu. (Not to mention the strawberry shortcake, which is the best $4 dessert in town.) Another holdover is the all-you-can-eat brunch with mimosa for $15 from 8 am till noon on weekends. For $6 more, your breakfast beverage becomes bottomless. Over the next month or so, Janiak will unveil a mostly new bill of Florida fare, peppered by his Big Easy past, featuring rotating specials. As for the live music, sultry chanteuse Fiona Frensche is already a fixture on Fridays from 6-9 p.m. Her jaunty mashup of pop and bossa nova are so nuanced you’ll find yourself bobbing your head before you realize she’s put a jazzy spin on a Radiohead tune. Sunset Bistro’s self-assured soft opening proves it is poised to join the Pearl and Middle Grounds among the top the dining destinations in Treasure Island. Joe Furst, of Place Projects, is leading a zoning change campaign In the Warehouse Arts District. He has assembled 9 acres on 22nd St S. that he is seeking to rezone from a restrictive “IT” (Industrial Traditional), to a new zoning classification for the corridor called “Industrial Mixed-Use” or “I-MIX.” The change is intended to expand potential uses: providing for spaces with office and residential options that could cater to artisans, makers, breweries, and other local businesses. These users are already prevalent in the district, and proprietors are challenged by exiting zoning according to Furst. How the pandemic affected ‘Floridians’ Free-time Routines

to outdoor activities such as sports, gardening and fishing. You can see the full survey results, together with a full set of stats and percentages, here: www.storagecafe.com/blog/americans -favorite-pastimes/

by Aura Mogosanu When the world shut down in March, many of us had to find something pleasant to do to help pass the newfound wealth of time and make that period bearable. It’s July now and we’re all likely well-adjusted to the new normal, so are we still committed to maintaining these activities? 46% of the Florida respondents plan to dive into outdoor activities such as sports and gardening as soon as social distancing restrictions are lifted completely according to our most recent survey. At Storage Café they conducted research with data that came from more than 1,000 survey respondents, looking into the most popular hobbies and pastimes as we hopefully move forward from lockdown into the post-lockdown period. Here are some more highlights of our research:

• One in four Florida respondents reported taking up a new hobby during lockdown; moreover, a staggering 76% of them stated they would like to stick to it long-term. • 15% of those who made a new lifestyle choice turned to gaming, spending on average close to 3 hrs/day on this online pastime during lockdown. Californians, by comparison, spent only 1½ hrs per day on it. However, post-lockdown, the gaming fan base among respondents might drop to around 9%. • Even though screen time and video games captured Floridians’ attention the most during lockdown, these are the leading activities they now intend to cast aside; instead they’re most looking forward

• Cooking was Floridians’ most popular new lockdown hobby (24%), followed closely by arts and crafts (18%), from sewing – including masks for personal protection – painting and drawing, crocheting, knitting, quilting and candle-making to others that saw a revival like embroidery, finger knitting and tatting, alongside pottery, woodworking and jewelry making. • Others took on playing an instrument, exercising, learning coding and web design, or board games. • Even though screen time and video games captured Floridians’ attention the most during lockdown, these are the leading activities they now intend to do less of, focusing instead more on activities that get them moving, like exercising, gardening, fishing or even bird watching. Here’s the link to the research www.storagecafe.com/blog/ americans-favorite-pastimes/

David Calvin St. Pete’s Best Custom Furniture Craftsman by Amy Walker

Since swapping St. Louis snow for St. Pete sunshine in 2015, David Calvin has crafted custom furniture pieces and built-ins for dozens of local families and interior designers. Customers love the control it gives them over design, size, color, wood, and complementary materials like metal and glass. David makes furniture of all types (and styles) including: • Desks • Dining tables • Beds • Dressers • Hutches • Accent tables • Bars • Buffets • Built-ins As David Calvin Furniture Studio celebrates its 5th year in St. Pete, we talked to David about his craft and his business.

Q: What type of furniture is most popular

in St. Pete? A: Dining tables! It’s an important gathering place, and people have a hard time finding exactly what they want in retail stores. They come to me to get the exact size and look they have in mind. It makes me feel great when customers tell me they can’t wait to create new memories eating, playing games, and entertaining around their new heirloom.

Q: What style of furniture do you make? A: I actually like the challenge of making ALL styles of furniture – traditional, contemporary, mid-century, you name it.

Q: How did you get into furniture making? A: From typewriters to lawnmowers, my parents say I’ve always had a knack for tearing things apart and putting them back together! Seriously, I began building furniture as a hobby for family and friends more than 20 years ago. When I decided to make it my full-time job, I studied at the well-known Center for Furniture Craftsmanship (Maine) and honed intricate veneering skills at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking (Indiana).

Q: How are you celebrating your 5th

anniversary in St Pete? A: By having a sale. I’m offering 10% off new custom furniture orders placed by Sept. 30, 2020.

Q: Can you take new custom furniture

projects while keeping proper COVID protocols? A: Absolutely. I don’t even have to enter your home or meet in-person. We can do everything remotely through photos, measurements, drawings, and sample drop-offs.

Q: Where can I see your work? A: Scroll through my online gallery a

Diverse Personalities Highlight Local Barrier Islands History Story by STEVE TRAIMAN

The recent history of our little corner of the world is one of colorful personalities, some going back close to 100 years!

Our barrier island beach communities developed over the past century thanks to fishing guides, hoteliers, real estate developers and realtors. Some of their names can still be seen attached to city parks, such as Upham Beach, Hurley Park in Pass-a-Grille and Horan Park by the St. Pete Beach Recreation Center.

There are also landmarks such as Corey Avenue and Corey Causeway in St. Pete Beach, and much can also be learned from books. These include a brand new, recently released one written by Tierra Verde author Dennis Whelan, “The Pinellas Puzzle,” that adds a wealth of historic detail about the development of Tierra Verde, Mullet Key, and the New Uplands of Lower Boca Ciega Bay. This new book is available in Kindle form ($2.99) or paperback ($15) from Amazon and would make a great gift for locals interested in history of the area we call Paradise. Dennis lives with wife Patricia, and moved here from Long Branch, NJ.

Frank T. Hurley Jr., recently departed Pass-a-Grille realtor and historian, wrote two books. The first, “Surf, Sand and Postcard Sunsets,” is subtitled A History of Pass-a-Grille and the Gulf Beaches. His sequel, “Pass-a-Grille Vignettes: Times Past Tales Remembered,” is a compilation of original stories Frank wrote for the Pass-a-Grille newsletter Grille Bits, which was created and published for 8 years as a volunteer by Paradise NEWS founder Renee Roos. Roberta Lamb Whipple, St. Pete Beach Library director for many years, was raised on the beach. Her dad owned Lamb’s Pharmacy in the Corey area when she was young. She authored “St. Pete Beach’s Corey Avenue,” one of Arcadia Publishing Company’s Images of America Series. Other local books in this series include “St. Petersburg, The Sunshine City“ and “Tampa Bay’s Gulf Beaches,” both by local columnist Wayne Ayers.

Upham Beach at the north end of St. Pete Beach was named for the Upham family. In 1936, the area between the present site of the Beach Theater and the end of the Corey Causeway was mangrove swamp. It occurred to The Upham Company, sales agents for the International Realty Associates and the First National Bank of Tampa, that an attractive approach to the beaches as well as a desirable business section could be developed by improving what is now the Corey Avenue district. They tried to convince the property owners, who turned down the proposal, and Upham decided to do it for their own account. They bought the lots fronting Corey Avenue, filled the swamp, and paved the street. They also built the first Upham Building that was quickly occupied by local businesses. An Upham block still stands, with new local businesses and restaurants.

The opening of Corey Avenue and its official dedication took place on February 13, 1937, with a mass celebration and motorcade. Speeches were made by Mayor Smith of St. Petersburg, Mayor Deacon of Pass-a-Grille, heads of both the Gulf Beach and St. Petersburg chambers of commerce, and Mrs. William L. Edison, daughter-in-law of the famous inventor. Also, Mrs. Jack Corey for whose husband – head of another pioneer family and former councilman – the causeway is named. Corey was one of the most forward-thinking and civic-minded local politicians who saw the future opportunities for this area.

Hurley Park in Pass-a-Grille is named after the late Col. Frank T. Hurley Sr., who started Hurley & Associates realtors in Pass-a-Grille when he bought out the former owners in the 1930s. He was involved in many civic activities until his death in 1966. He was succeeded by son Frank T. Hurley Jr., joined by brother Ken and his son, Sean, who runs the business today.

You can enjoy the view of the Intracoastal Waterway from beautiful waterfront Horan Park, adjacent to the St. Pete Beach Community Center. The site hosts the annual October Friday night Concert Series, major festivals, fundraisers and other civic events. The park is named after Colonel Michael J. Horan Sr., the mayor of St. Pete Beach from 1992 to 1996. He served 26 years with the U.S. Army’s 1st Calvary Division, moving here in 1973. He was the owner of Horan Realty and was very active in all civic affairs.

Local Museums Add to History The Pinellas County-owned Gulf Beaches Historical Museum on 9th Avenue in Pass-a-Grille is housed in the island’s first church, near what was “downtown Pass-a-Grille” before four cities merged in 1957 to form St. Petersburg Beach, later shortened to St. Pete Beach. How the church was saved from destruction to become the museum is a barrier island story worth asking about. The county had considered relocating the museum to join a growing community of rescued buildings in Largo at Heritage Park with an eye toward protecting the collection from storm surge. A move was not feasible, and now the collection is being digitized, which will protect, preserve and allow for sharing online in the near future. The Museum is totally run by volunteers. For more details, gulfbeachesmuseum.com. Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum opened several years ago at 2290 9th Ave. South, St. Petersburg, as a living testament to the late father of Black History Month (1875-1950). The son of former slaves established the Association for the Study of Negro Life in 1915 and next year, the Journal of Negro History, began quarterly publication. In 1926, Woodson proposed and launched the annual February observance of “Negro History Week,” which became “Black History Month” in 1976. The Museum is dedicated to preserve, present, and interpret African American history and to engage a broad and diverse audience through these activities. Also, to promote an understanding among various groups that comprise the St. Petersburg community. And to enhance our ability as a society to respect, value diversity, and foster equal rights and social justice. For information, online at woodsonmuseum.org. For more than 100 years, the St. Petersburg Museum of History at the foot of the new St. Pete Pier District at the downtown waterfront has been an exhibit of history itself. The Museum has, over the years, played host to many of the city’s and the county’s archives. Visitors can relish in the rich heritage of the founding of St. Pete, from the very groundbreaking activities for the Orange Belt railroad to the establishment of the Women’s Town Improvement League. It has a replica of the Benoist XIV biplane seaplane that Tony Jannus flew between St. Petersburg and Tampa, ushering in commercial flight on Jan. 1, 1914. It also hosts “Little Cooperstown,” with more than 3,000 signed baseballs by many of the top players, and also takes baseball fans to the inaugural season of the Tampa Bay Rays. After closing down for Pier District construction, the Museum officially reopened on July 7. For more information, spmoh.com

The Gulfport History Museum opened in 1985 and is located at 5301 28th Ave. South, operated by the all-volunteer Gulfport Historical Society, with generous financial and moral support from the City. Admission to the collection is free, except for special fundraising events. Visitors can research the history of their home, view the extensive photo collection, research Gulfport families, view the current exhibits, and browse the Square Mullet gift shop, which includes a micro-niche Florida bookstore. It features authors like Gary Mormino, Jack Davis, Arin Greenwood, Jon Kile, and Michael Taylor – as well as many others. The Museum offers free wifi and water and encourages people to come and learn more about Gulfport’s history. It is also a gathering place for the community, and welcomes writers, readers, or people who would just like to chat with others and also welcomes dogs and well-behaved children The Museum plans to reopen with the state’s Phase 3 options, with more information available at gulfporthistoricalsociety.org [Editor’s Note: special thanks to local Tampa Bay Times archives, Gulf Beaches Historical Museum, Dr. Carter G. WHO IS GHD CONSTRUCTION SERVICES? Sometimes companies tend to take things for granted, and aren’t really empathic enough to realize that people are wondering about family owned businesses like GHD Construction Services. Maybe it’s not that important when buying clothes or food from a local store, but after numerous customers kept inquiring about our company history, I thought I’d take this time to shed some light on our company. After all, when trusting a contractor with the large dollars needed for a new home to be constructed, it is very important to feel safe with that investment. GHD Construction Services, Inc., begun as an “American Dream” of Tom Smith nearly 50 years ago, has constructed over 6,500 quality homes for families in Florida since 1971. After receiving an economics degree from the University of Florida in 1970, Tom began his homebuilding career in Pasco County, and now GHD is being continued under the leadership of the second generation, with son Brian at the helm. Brian also attended and graduated from UF with a finance degree, and has steadily and conservatively grown GHD over the past few years. Aside from the GHD homes along the Pinellas Beaches, under Brian’s leadership GHD has become one of the largest producers of quality affordable apartments in the state of Florida, serving veterans and lesser income Americans. Providing safe and sanitary housing for families in need is an integral part of GHD’s business plan to give back to those that served our great nation. GHD Construction Services, Inc. is now branded as “GHD Coastal Homes” for our new waterfront home designs. In visiting the GHD model home, customers realize the Key West theme that resonates so well for our beach communities. Due to the volume of construction that GHD produces annually, and all the lessons learned from providing affordable housing, it became evident that quality affordable housing can be achieved for all price points of residential homes. With that in mind, GHD has developed

home designs for the Pinellas beaches that do not break the budget of those wanting a new home, either on the water or an interior lot in the Pinellas beach communities. GHD customers range from snowbirds now deciding to own a new home in Florida as a second home, to the many that already own homes here, but want a replacement upgrade on their existing home. For those families, GHD provides all the services necessary to demo their existing home, and work with designing a new home that fits their budget, then permitting and constructing their new home. GHD prides itself in being a “One Stop Construction Company”, providing architectural services, permitting, design, and home construction, from GHD prides itself in being a start to finish, for customers “One Stop Construction to realize the enjoyment of a new Florida home with all Company”, providing all of the of today’s bells & whistles. many steps needed, including As a family owned business, we are very proud of what we have achieved in serving these thousands of Florida families.

Some of you asked about the giant web behind me in one of the photos in the last blog. Yeah, it’s pretty cool. It’s called Bending Arc, comprised of 180 miles of twine connected by 1,662,528 knots (I’m thinking that has to be an estimate because how could you count to 1,662,528 without getting distracted each time you try and having to start over again and again until you finally say, “Screw it, it’s 1,662,528”), and was created by Janet Echelman, a Boston based artist born in Tampa, and a team of architects, aeronautical and mechanical engineers, lighting designers, computer scientists, landscape architects and apparently an army of twine knotters. As shown in the photo above it takes on special effects when lit up at night. It’s supposed to be able to withstand 150 mph winds, and I hope so because it would be a real bitch to untangle (like getting a backlash on a fishing reel with 180 miles for line). The other pier photo is the crowning structure at the end of the pier, with a gift shop, seafood restaurants, and a bait shop if you prefer to catch your own seafood – or feed the pelicans.

We live in interesting times.

And kudos to these social distancing pioneers. Why hire a boat to go tarpon fishing and risk exposing yourself to contact with a captain and crew when you can just pump up the kid’s unicorn floatie and paddle out by yourself? And what genius thought of 4-person individual volleyball? Not only thought of it but also decided to design and market a social distancing net for it? I’m impressed – but the new normal looks f’ing unnormal in so ways. We will get through this – but then what?

Thanks Brian, Bernadette and Laura for my first-time FaceTime dinner party tonight. STL and LTL. ParadiseNewsFL.com | AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2020

St. Pete

PIER FACTS By Peter Roos

The long anticipated completion and public opening

of the $92 million Pier District was delayed several times, including twice due to virus concerns. Attendees were masked most of the time at the July 6th celebration of the Southeast’s largest waterfront entertainment district, the St. Pete Pier™. Nevertheless, reviews have been very positive. A 26-acre extension of St. Pete’s bustling city center, visitors are able to enjoy countless experiences, from pop-up performances to inspiring public art installations. Once coronavirus worries are over, The Pier will host major events including concerts, markets and more. The Pier opens 30 minutes before sunrise; it closes at 11pm. The fire marshall listed capacity at 20,000+. About half that many attended opening day. While limited to 2,500 invites each hour, more than 10,000 came and some felt it was too crowded for safe social distancing.

Located at 800 2nd Ave NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701 and online at www.stpetepier.org, The Pier is also active on social media. Twitter: @StPetePier Instagram: @stpetepier Facebook: www.facebook.com/ StPetePier/ Hashtags: #StPetePier The St. Pete Pier has been an icon of the City throughout its history. Dating back to 1889, the Pier has seen several iterations, including: 1889 – Railroad Pier 1905 – The Electric Pier 1913 – Municipal Recreation Pier 1926 – Million Dollar Pier 1973 – The (Inverted Pyramid) Pier 2020 – The St. Pete Pier and St. Pete Pier District With five acres of green space and a net increase of 500 trees, the Pier provides visitors plenty of space for outdoor activities: picnics, lounging in the sun and finding a shaded

spot to enjoy bay and city views. Multiple activity areas offer something for all ages and activity levels. Playground by Earthscape The kids’ play area is located near the Splash Pad and Spa Beach, so kids and their families can enjoy the sunshine and outdoors. With a natural, all-wood design, the play areas incorporate child-friendly, age specific zones of activity. Splash Pad At the heart of the St. Pete Pier is a water fountain and splash pad. During hot summer days, the Splash Pad offers a place for families to splash around. It features big and small vertical water jets, which light up at night. Spa Beach Easily accessible on foot from anywhere along St. Pete’s downtown waterfront, Spa Beach has been expanded with a naturalized shoreline. Beach volleyball and other activities abound, and kayakers and paddle boarders can easily launch from this area.

Titled Lawn The Titled Lawn features a slanted, state-of-the-art design, providing a relaxing, grassy surface on which visitors can relax and enjoy views of the St. Pete waterfront and skyline. Coastal Thicket The Coastal Thicket is a place for nature lovers and explorers to discover native vegetation and learn more about St. Pete’s natural ecosystem. Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center provides guests from around the world an upfront opportunity to learn and live the story of the recovery of the Tampa Bay ecosystem. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in varied educational programming or simply enjoy the view from the Discovery Center observation deck. With steps leading closer to the water, visitors will be able to see varied wildlife up close and personal. Dolphins, rays, manatees, fish and seabirds are just some of the species that call this area their home. Fishing Deck The new Pier has a dedicated Fishing Platform built on caissons leftover from the previous Inverted Pyramid pier, inviting you to get closer to the water – and the fish. Walk down a small set of steps to a spacious deck that accommodates a multitude of people enjoying one of St. Petersburg’s favorite pastimes in the fish-fertile waters of Tampa Bay. Feel free to bring your own rods, reels, bait and tackle, but don’t fret it if you want to fish on a whim. Gator Jim’s Tackle at the St. Pete Pier provides everything an angler could need – gear, tackle, nets, a large variety of fresh and frozen bait, and more.

DINING OPPORTUNITIES

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Spa Beach Bistro This inviting entry point to the St. Pete Pier features a concession that offers grab-and-go snack items for beachgoers, as well as personal pizzas, (gluten free too) chicken fingers, sweet potato and eggplant chips to name just a few. The Spa Beach Bistro is surrounded by colorful tables and chairs, so you can munch on a snack, sip a drink, enjoy good times with friends and family, or just exhale and enjoy the view.

Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center will provide guests from around the world an upfront opportunity to learn and live the story of the recovery of the Tampa Bay ecosystem. The focal point of the exhibit hall is a centerpiece aquarium that will showcase many of the species found in local waters. Touch tanks, interactive displays, video presentations, and docent-led tours will combine for an unforgettable experience that will, hopefully, lead to guests walking away with a newfound respect for our local environment and how small steps can make big changes. The Discovery Center will also feature 1,000 square feet of classroom and event space.

Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille At the southern end of the Overlook, where you’re most apt to find a party, the 10,000-square-foot restaurant/bar serves authentic Florida fare and flavors from throughout the Caribbean Rim. Enjoy their famous Yucatan shrimp, chicken wings, flatbreads and more! The Driftwood Cafe is a casual walkup spot offering ice cream and snacks, including healthy options. A rooftop (5th floor) classic tiki bar with a tropical atmosphere, picturesque views and craft tiki cocktails, Pier Teaki is on top of the building at The Point, where there is usually a breeze. One floor down is Teak, a modern waterfront restaurant, featuring a Florida-themed menu.

The St. Pete Pier incorporates many of the best trends in modern urban living. It’s eminently walkable. In fact, no cars are permitted. The Pier has been built as a modular series of destinations, each one conveniently leading into the next, making for a cohesive adventure with new surprises at every turn. Visitors are able to plan an itinerary, choose a favorite landing spot, or just show up and explore.

ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES The St. Pete Pier was designed with a focus on sustainable measures and environmental protection, including: ● Trams and electric vehicle charging stations. Much of the roadway has been eliminated and there is reduced parking of personal vehicles, reducing associated pollution over the bay. ● Solar PV panel covered market structures and solar PV panel covered parking canopies that provide power to many areas of the new Pier. ● New breakwaters to enhance the restoration of Spa Beach, mitigate erosion and provide protection for surrounding sea grass beds. ● LED lighting throughout the Pier District to keep costs down and reduce energy usage and minimize light pollution. ● The caissons and pier foundations are made of super tough concrete designed to withstand extreme weather and built to have a lifetime of at least 80 years. ● Not only were extreme wind, weather, and hurricane risks considered and resistance incorporated into the design, but the new Pier at its highest point is 11 inches above projected sea level rise for year 2100 based on the 2015 Climate Science Advisory Panel (CSAP) projections. ● Use of herbicide, pesticides and fertilizer is minimized. The Coastal 26

Thicket is fertilizer free and designed for low to no maintenance. ● The Playground has natural products such as Robinia/black locust wood for equipment, and recycled products. PUBLIC ART St. Petersburg has become one of the most recognized cultural hubs in the Southeast. And downtown St. Pete is its epicenter. Featuring museums devoted to artistic legends like Dali and Chihuly and street upon street adorned by colorful murals both large and small, it is easy to see why “Art Shines Here.” The St. Pete Pier and Pier District are no exception. Not only is the pier itself a work of art, but is host to installations from four internationally renowned artists. SHOPPING The Marketplace is located just past the Pier’s Gateway and features a rotating array of independent vendors selling unique items in kiosks and under 10’x10’ tents. A solar roof structure provides shade as you browse the selections and meet the sellers. St. Pete’s buy-local culture is represented in this lively bazaar. Marketplace lease agreements run three to 12 months, ensuring that a rotating cast of vendors will be on hand to sell an interesting array of products, many with a local flair. Marketplace Hours: Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10am-6pm Local markets, outdoor health and fitness activities, concerts and

performances, food & drink festivals and so much more. Seasonal events will not be forgotten, from Oktoberfest, Fall Festival, Easter Egg Hunt, Holiday Festival and Spring Festival. Once or twice per year, there will be major festivals that encompass the entire Pier District. TRANSPORTATION The Pier District will have three 12-passenger trams are ADA accessible and designed to tow a 35-passenger trailer, if needed. Two electric vehicles, able to carry 11 passengers each are available for special occasions. Trams will run continuously and stop at the following locations: the entrance plaza, Pelican Lot, Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center and The Point. The St. Pete Pier’s large Pelican parking lot is located just south of the Pavilion and Pier Plaza. Outside the Pier complex, metered street parking is available, as are several downtown parking garages and lots within walking distance of The Pier. Fees at these facilities vary. The anticipated rates are projected to be $10 for all day, with an incremental charge per hour of $2. Prices are subject to change during special events. Payment Type: Cash/Credit card and Parkmobile app. The St. Pete Pier is bicycle-friendly. The Coast Bike Share program has docking stations within the Pier District. Bike racks are available for personal bicycles. There will also be approximately 25 boat slips with metered docking located on the south side of the Pelican Parking Lot.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

By Dr. Les Cole, MD, ABAARM

Am I Hypothyroid?

(ATP Active Thyroid Hormone = T3) Are You Depressed? Anxious? Panic Attacks?

Depression is a major symptom of hypothyroidism and many of the symptoms of depression are the same as hypothyroid symptoms. And when antidepressants alone do not work adding thyroid hormone can often improve depression, even in patients with normal thyroid tests. Anxiety and panic attacks are also common symptoms of hypothyroidism and there is a significant relationship between Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and anxiety.

Are You Fatigued? Low Energy?

T3 increases the number of mitochondrial power plants in your cells. They produce ATP the energy currency of your body. They provide the energy for every bodily action. For example, every time your muscles contract – including your heart – you use large amounts of ATP. So, if you are fatigued or feel low energy, your T3 levels may not be sufficiently optimized.

Are Your Extremities Cold? Low Body Temperature? Heat Intolerant?

Every function of your body is exquisitely designed to work optimally at a core body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. If your body temperature runs low, your health wanes. Fortunately, every time an ATP is made heat is produced. T3 increases your mitochondrial power plants/ furnaces and stimulates production of “uncoupling protein” which produces even more heat when needed. Interestingly, if you are heat intolerant, this can also be a symptom of hypothyroidism because thyroid is needed for sweating and sweating is needed for evaporative cooling of your body.

Difficulty with Your Memory?

One of T3’s important functions is to increase the energy for your brain to perform, but it also increases your brain’s “clock speed.” Clock speed is how quickly things get done in your neurons (brain cells) and therefore how quickly you are mentally able to process information.

Overweight? Trouble Losing Weight?

If you do not make enough T3 you will not produce as much uncoupling protein, which increases the burning of both sugar and fat. You also will not have as many power plants to produce enough energy for you feel like exercising and so you will be less likely to exercise to burn up sugar and fat.

And since your muscles burn mostly fat when you are sitting, the less muscle you have, the less fat and sugar you will burn. And one pound of muscle burns approximately 20x the calories as a pound of fat – AT REST!

Is Your Cholesterol Elevated?

If you do not burn excess sugar, it goes to the liver and is converted to triglyceride and cholesterol. If your T3 is low or even not optimal, your cholesterol and triglycerides elevate. Before there were tests to measure TSH, T4 & T3, your blood cholesterol and triglycerides were the test used to determine if you were hypothyroid! If they were elevated, you were diagnosed hypothyroid and treated with thyroid replacement until they were lowered back into the normal range!

Have You Had Problems with Infertility?

For your ovarian cells (and all your cells) to work correctly, they need adequate levels of T3. For all your other hormones, including sex hormones, to function optimally, your T3 has to function optimally. And men, low thyroid can decrease your fertility as well. You need enough mitochondrial power plants and ATP energy currency for your swimmers to go the distance. Summertime Living is Easy … or Is It? by Nanette Wiser

If you’re not sure what your personal song of summer should be, we encourage you to pick one now. Mine is Pharrell’s “Happy” so PN went in search of some thought leaders who can help you achieve quieter minds in difficult…but improving times. Don’t Worry, Be Happy: Gary King is the author of “The

Happiness Formula – The Ultimate Life Makeover” and around town, he’s posting signs of positivity. Eighty of them, recently featured on ABC Action News. But he’s so much more. A motivational speaker and successful entrepreneur, this renaissance man is a success in so many diverse businesses: He is an expert in event production and produced and directed major sports events here including powerboat racing. He is also an internationally known artist and sculptor honored by President Bill Clinton, as well as a former TV executive. Working with Anthony Robbins and Robbins Research International for 25 years, he refined his message and mission. His message has appeared in articles featured in Oprah Magazine, O’s Guide to Life, Positive Impact Magazine, and has had numerous articles published on the topic of “Character Is Our Bailout.” www.garykinglive.com

Grief As Medicine: Dr. Michael Mantell is the author of “Don’t’ Sweat The Small Stuff” and “The Daily Five,” an internationally known coach, psychiatrist and motivational speaker with regular television appearances who writes weekly for Thrive Global. A personal friend and colleague, I find his Daily5 on Facebook to be inspirational and comforting.

1. These days, it seems like the hip marketing tool is to make

everything from exercise to gratitude, medicine. Well, let’s add another one. Grief. That’s right, grief is now medicine.

28

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2020 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

2. Medicine seems so confused and confusing about so many things

lately, and maybe always, and maybe we just see it more clearly than ever. So why are so many things “wanna be” medicine? Ever hear medicine is exercise, or gratitude is or grief? Nope. Never.

3. Grief isn’t necessarily unhealthy, though resisting grieving,

avoiding it, can be. In that case, healthy grief and experiencing the emotional pain associated with it can be healing. It’s a natural response to loss. Natural.

4. Being able and willing to share your feelings and giving your pain a “voice,” offering to help others even while grieving over your own personal loss are two key positive ways to grieve.

5. The physical, emotional and spiritual symptoms of normal grief,

moving through the process from shock to acceptance, are all healthy ways to prevent the need for anti-depressant medication. So perhaps like exercise, grief is not medicine. Grief, like exercise, can prevent the need for medicine.

Bug Off: Mosquitos and pesky no-see-ums think my skin is their

cake. As a holistic enthusiast, I am always in search of wellness solutions to replace chemical concoctions. Avon Skin So Soft doesn’t work for me, Cutter fragrance-free does, but I still wanted to know more about battling the infernal pests of summer. Be sure to eliminate standing water to decrease breeding spots. Check out these insect-fighting tips. • In addition to not going out from dusk to dawn, skip the perfume and other fragrances. • Lemon Eucalyptus. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified lemon eucalyptus, an EPA registered repellent, as an active ingredient in mosquito repellent. You can also try catnip, peppermint, tea tree or lemongrass oil. • Burn a citronella candle and use a fan.

• IR3535, a synthetic amino acid, is one of the most common active ingredients in insect repellents. Repellents containing IR3535 come mostly in cream form, and are available in most drugstores. The amino acid messes with the insects’ sense of smell and is an excellent repellent. • Try eating mosquito-repellent foods like garlic, onions, apple cider vinegar, lemon grass, chili peppers, tomatoes, grapefruit, beans and lentils. • Grow lemongrass, lavender, rosemary and citronella plants to repel skeeters. • Reduce the itch of a mosquito bite with crushed ice, aloe vera or an oatmeal ointment. Make an oatmeal paste by mixing equal amounts of oatmeal and water in a bowl until you have a spackle-like substance. Spoon some paste onto a washcloth and hold it, paste-side down, on the irritated skin for about 10 minutes. Then wipe the area clean. Or try a baking soda paste. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with just enough water to create a paste. Apply it to the bug bite, and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing it away.

Competition is Back On

(We hope!)

Frank Adornato is an author, speaker, triathlete, college certified wellness coach and trainer. He is a five-time Ironman finisher, including two finishes at the World Championship Ironman in Kona, Hawaii. He and his wife Judy live in St. Petersburg. For more information on Frank and the training services he provides, visit his website at www.triitall.com.

One of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic was the cancellation or indefinite postponement of every race across the country. Running races, triathlons, swim meets, cycling events, etc. – every competitive event was either cancelled or postponed because of concerns over possible spreading of the virus due to the large numbers of athletes coming together to compete. Race directors scrambled to figure out how, if, and when they could reschedule their events, and what needed to be done to protect the safety and health of competitors, race staff and volunteers, and spectators.

Since March however, there have been zero races. In spite of this, athletes have continued training and hoping for some good news. Well, we’re finally starting to see some events being added back onto the race calendars. And as you would expect, there will undoubtedly be changes implemented to ensure that all COVID - 19 guidelines are met. Look for procedural changes and restrictions in everything from race packet pick-up, set-up and transition areas, race starting lines, water aid stations, finish line corrals, and awards ceremonies.

The St. Petersburg / Tampa Bay area has long been known as a mecca for competitive, endurance athletes. Runners and cyclists can be seen working out every day on the many roads and trails throughout the area, and it’s very common to see swimmers putting in their freestyle miles in the Gulf of Mexico or in one of the many community pools. And all that training gets put to good use in the myriad of races held literally every weekend in our area.

If you’re anxious to get back into the game, here’s a partial list of races in the Tampa Bay area. The list has been changing weekly as races are either cancelled or postponed. Since everything is in a state of flux, we recommend that you go to the race website to confirm dates and to get event details, including the new format being implemented by the race directors for the hygienic safety of all.

Teaching Your Child Pet Care Basics

FEEDING Caring for a pet offers many benefits for children, encouraging responsible and compassionate behavior. Children can add food and water to dishes, give treats, and handle cleaning duties. When shopping for food, explain the need to choose a food that has the nutrients your pet needs to stay healthy. Too many fillers or unnecessary ingredients may be bad for your pet’s health – just like junk food is bad for people. Children can help clean pet dishes. It’s important to wash them every day to prevent bacterial growth. If bacteria remains, your pet could become ill. By the time children reach 9 or 10, they may be able to handle feeding or cleaning with little supervision. BRUSHING Many pets benefit from weekly brushing. Brushing removes loose hair and debris from your pet’s body and can prevent hairballs in cats and rabbits. Demonstrate how to use gentle strokes in the direction

the hair grows. Coach young children to understand how much pressure to use by trying out the brush on their arms. If your pet has long hair or sheds heavily, more frequent brushings are helpful. Older children can help sweep or vacuum hair from floors, carpets, and furniture. Dogs need frequent baths to remove odors and keep them clean. Your child can help lather and rinse the shampoo from your pet. WALKING OR EXERCISING YOUR PET Unlike adults, kids may never grow tired of playing fetch or frisbee with your dog or entertaining Tigger with a kitty fishing rod. Exercise improves socialization while keeping your pet healthy.

Teach your kids how to walk your dog or cat on a leash or harness in a fenced yard. When your child is comfortable and can control your pet safely, let them control the leash occasionally while you’re out for a walk. Don’t leave young children alone with pets during exercise or any other time. They may be tempted to tease a pet or pull its hair or tail when you’re not around. CLEANING UP Cleaning the litter box or cage and picking up poop in the yard isn’t the most fun pet care task, but it’s essential. When your children are about 9 or 10, they may wish to help with these tasks. Show them how to dispose of waste properly and wash their hands thoroughly afterwards. SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Every child is different. Some may enthusiastically participate in pet care while others need prodding. Ultimately, your pet’s health and wellbeing depend on you. If your children forget to feed your pet or take it for a walk, you’ll need to step in and do these things yourself.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

CAN WE TALK? I have a confession to make. I’m one of those guys who has to hold the remote control at home, in front of the TV.

The answer is, the insurance company saves big. You save pennies. UM coverage only applies if the guy who hits your car in traffic has little or no insurance himself, such as $10,000 / $20,000. Suppose you (or your spouse) are seriously injured, to the tune of many tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for medical expenses, and even more in future lost income as well as terrible pain and suffering. If “that guy” has no insurance, your health insurance covers your medical expenses (exactly how well depends on how good your health coverage is), but you are out in the cold as far as pain and suffering is concerned, as well as future lost income and permanent disability.

Truth be told, there are probably several reasons I feel that compulsion, but the main one, the Mac-Daddy of reasons I want that magic wand close at all times is because of – wait for it – IGNORANT COMMERCIALS. I MUST be ready to kill the audio, or maybe even change the channel, even if only temporarily. Some commercials make me feel like the companies that spend all those millions of dollars to put their messages in front of you, me and everyone we know, regard Americans as stupid, and they’re willing to treat us that way, all to make a buck. Another admission here – I’m thinking (these days) of especially ONE commercial. Hint, the color yellow predominates, it has a very large bird in it (an emu, actually), and a dorky looking guy who sells auto insurance. The message on its face is that you can save money by “paying only for what you need.” They don’t let on what insurance coverages you may decide you don’t need,

34

but believe me they’re hoping that you decide not to buy uninsured motorists (UM) coverage. Let’s say you’re the typical consumer and decide to save that money. Who do you suppose saves the most money if you don’t buy UM coverage?

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2020 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

You saved several hundred dollars on insurance premiums over the last year or so (maybe), but the insurance company saves hundreds of thousands, or even millions. So, who really wins? You tell me. In the end, who got the bird? ANDERSON & BRODERSEN, P.A., 350 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach, FL 33706 (727) 363-6100 www.PropertyLawGroup.com

Keep Mosquitoes Away

Courtesy 123rf.com

By Tony Fabrizio, Sr. Public Relations Coordinator

S ummer rains are approaching! Pinellas County Vegetation Management and Mosquito Control is reminding residents they can do plenty to minimize their exposure to the bloodsucking insects.

Residents should dump or cover standing water, dress in loose-fitting long sleeves and pants while outdoors, defend by using a CDC-approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. Mosquitoes do not transmit the virus that causes COVID-19. When citizens see a problem, call Mosquito Control at (727) 464-7503 or submit a service request at www.pinellascounty.org/reportanissue. Help prevent mosquitoes through the following: • Since mosquitoes only need one-quarter to one-half inch of standing water for larvae to survive, keep containers dry. Examples: flowerpots, garbage cans, recycling containers, wheelbarrows, aluminum cans, boat tarps, old tires & buckets. • Flush birdbaths & wading pools weekly. • Flush ornamental bromeliads or treat with BTI, a biological larvicide available at home stores. • Clean roof gutters, which can become clogged and hold water. • Change the water in outdoor pet dishes regularly.

• Keep pools & spas chlorinated and filtered. • Stock ornamental ponds with mosquito-eating fish. • Cover rain barrels with screening. • Check for standing water under houses, near plumbing drains, under air condition drip areas, around septic tanks and heat pumps. • Take steps to eliminate standing water, improve drainage and prevent future puddling. Pinellas County treats known breeding areas by ground and air. While mosquitoes do not transmit the virus that causes COVID-19, they can be carriers of other serious illnesses, such as the West Nile and Zika viruses and Dengue. The County recently resumed its sentinel chicken program, which surveys for mosquito-borne diseases by regularly testing chickens that are caged in eight target locations throughout the county. Chickens are effective sentinels because if bitten by a mosquito carrying a virus, they develop the antibodies much like we do for the common cold. “It’s that time of year when we have to be extra vigilant to contain mosquito populations,” Brian Lawton, Mosquito Control Manager, Pinellas County said. “When we all work together, we can stay ahead of the problem.” More information, visit www.pinellascounty.org/publicworks/mosquito/default.htm.

HANGING AROUND By Caron Schwartz JahVa Coffee Lounge+ This whole COVID thing has wreaked havoc on my retired life routine. It’s been months since I enjoyed the daily highlight of the gym followed by relaxing at a cafe. The new normal involves pedaling my stationary bike or pumping some lightweight iron while watching YouTube or MasterClass in the privacy of my living room. I’ve become a connoisseur of Nespresso’s exotic coffees. It makes a damn tasty cup of joe, but I have to face the fact that my kitchen lacks a certain ambiance. When JahVa Coffee Lounge + bravely opened during the pandemic at the South Pasadena Shopping Center, I longed to check it out. Opportunity knocked after a freakishly long wait (don’t ask) at Quest Diagnostics in the same strip mall. As I headed toward JahVa, I bobbed along to the reggae before I even smelled the coffee. And I felt safe: A sign on the door said masks were required, and hand sanitizer was available at the entrance. Two pretty, young, mask-wearing things greeted me from behind the counter. I ordered a drink but didn’t take them up on the offer of a pastry. (The s’mores doughnut looked intriguing, but I restrained myself.) The cafe also offers smoothie bowls and there’s the ubiquitous CDB shot for those who indulge. With only one other customer I felt comfortable enough to sit, remove my mask, and enjoy a double-shot cappuccino. Don’t worry, I mused, drink coffee. Danny Dobrow Exhibit

Green green grass The Morean Center for Clay is celebrating the two-year tenure of artist-in-residence Danny Dobrow with a front gallery solo exhibition titled Green green grass. The gallery, 420 22nd St. S, St. Petersburg, is open Thursday through Saturday 10am-5pm. Dobrow started the work when he was still in art school and during his recent experiences with pandemic-imposed isolation, he turned to thoughts of greener pastures and memories of growing up in Minnesota. This body of work, realized amid a pandemic, reminds us to perhaps carry forward a new focus on simple pleasures.

Directed by Tampa Bay local Curtis Graham of Greyhouse Films, the trailblazing film stars Mary Rachel Quinn (LBJ, Dear John, Fantastic Four), Nicole Abisinio (Prime of Your Life, Broken Flowers), and Josue Gutierrez (Bernie the Dolphin 2, Bloodline). The show titled “Five Times Around,” launches on the American Stage YouTube channel (youtube.com/americanstage) August 17-21 daily at noon. For more information see americanstage.org/five. A win for arts funding Recently, the U.S. House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee rejected the fourth consecutive proposal to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Instead, they increased

By Caron Schwartz funding for both to $170 million for FYE 2021. This represents an increase of $7.75 million for each endowment. Additionally, the bill includes language to waive financial matching requirements allows organizations to use this money for general operating support in light of the ongoing pandemic. Learn more about how to support the arts through the Americans for the Arts Action Fund (artsactionfund.org).

History through HerStory The Tampa Museum of Art has opened a new exhibition, HerStory: Stories of Ancient Heroines and Everyday Women. Sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, the exhibition explores the story of women in the ancient world through depictions of goddesses, heroines, mythological characters, and everyday women in the museum’s collection of classical antiquities. This exhibition highlights objects that speak to the role of women in the ancient world, their myths and stories, from Aphrodite and Athena to Amazon warriors to women of the everyday. HerStory will be on view through January 9, 2022. Visitors and members can look forward to an accompanying series of educational offerings, both virtual and in-person throughout the exhibition’s 18-month run. CDC pandemic protocols are in effect, so visitors are encouraged to plan their visits by going to TampaMuseum.org. The first rule of Book Club ... AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2020 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

At its February meeting in Tallahassee, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) set the long-term bay scallop season in Gulf County (including St. Joseph Bay) to open Aug. 16 through Sept. 24 each year beginning in 2021. The 2020 season is also Aug. 16 through Sept. 24 and was set late last year after working closely with the local community. The chosen dates allow the FWC to balance stakeholder and community desires with the sustainability of the scallop populations. Establishing long-term season dates also provides predictability year-to-year. FWC staff will continue monitoring the status of bay scallops in St. Joseph Bay and elsewhere. Learn more about current bay scallop regulations by visiting www.MyFWC.com/Marine and clicking on “Recreational Regulations” and “Bay Scallops,” which is located under the “Crabs, Shrimp and Shellfish” tab. View the Commission meeting background materials at www. MyFWC.com/Commission by clicking on “Commission Meetings” and the agenda under “February 19-20, 2020.” Suggested Tweet: Long-term bay #scallop season in St. Joseph Bay/Gulf County set as Aug. 16-Sept. 24 each year @MyFWC: www.content.govdelivery.com/ accounts/FLFFWCC/bulletins/27c9a00 #fishing #Florida #FWC2020

FISHING

By Capt. Dylan Hubbard

HubbardsMarina.com • 727.393.1947

FISHING IN SHORE – Redfish action improves after rains. Outgoing tides we see them in the passes and on the beaches. On incoming tides, the back-bay areas on the flats and mangrove shorelines seem better. Trout are feeding through the area too, and the bite has been steady on edges of the shallower flats or on top of the deeper flats during the day. At night, bridge lights and dock lights are holding plenty of hungry trout. Amberjack open up starting August first! These guys are tricky in the warm months of August and September but we’re hoping they pick up for us in October before they close again at the end of October. NEAR SHORE – Good action on lane snapper, a few mangrove snapper, and some red grouper around 60-100ft on our 10-hour all day and our private fishing charters aboard the HUB. OFFSHORE – Got a nice big pile of fish this past weekend on our 39-hour trip, however it was not an easy feat due to a picky bite. Red grouper fishing has been steady out there from around 100-160ft of water around those hard-bottom bait shows, shell bottom and those potholes. However, the mangrove snapper fishing has been tougher this summer with a really spotty showing of mangroves. For more fishing reports, photos, videos and more, check out Hubbard’s Marina on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or Snap Chat. Simply search @HubbardsMarina and don’t forget our family motto, “If you’re too busy to go fishing, you’re just too busy!” Thanks for reading and checking out our report – Capt. “Get Sirius About Your Future”

August 2020 Astrology We made it through some rough cosmic weather in July of Retrogrades and Eclipses! This month is not as hard, but the first and third weeks of August bring much activity and stimulation into our lives. It begins with a Full Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius on the 3rd that highlights social life and humanitarian concerns, that is action-oriented, and requires adjustments from us. Communication planet Mercury enters Leo on the 4th when conversations can be dramatic and expressive! Love and money planet Venus visits security-oriented Cancer on the 7th for the rest of August. Financial and domestic security becomes more important. We no longer wear hearts on our sleeves as love becomes more serious. Being sensitive and sympathetic we want to take care of our mates and family. The New Moon in fiery Leo on the 18th begins the next lunar cycle! This new energy is ego-centered but asks us to make adjustments for others as well. We want our way on a personal level but need to consider others’ needs too. With a strong influence from Mercury expect to have a lot of conversations about it and also see it in the news! Then, the very next day thinking planet Mercury moves on to analytical Virgo, the 19th. Practical and logical ideas are expressed. Judgment is impartial and interests in the details are important. On the 22nd the Sun also changes signs entering Virgo. We want to do things well, enjoy routine, responsibilities, and learning. This is the last zodiac sign of summer helping us get our lives in order before the next season arrives.

ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dennis Merritt Jones

Take Care of Your Vehicle . . . It’s the Only One You’ll Get to Drive “Acceptance is the act of embracing what life presents to you with a good attitude. Our bodies are among the most willing and wise teachers of this lesson. Unless you spend a large percentage of your time engaged in out-of-body experiences, your body shows up wherever you are. It can be an ever-present benevolent guide or a lifelong cross to bear. The decision is yours.” ~ Cherie Carter-Scott

Have you ever stopped to consider what a blessing it is to have a body?

This becomes even more poignant when you can see your body as the vessel for your evolution; it is the device with which your soul touches the Earth and it has direct access to an inherent wisdom all of its own. 62

If you listen to it, your body will teach you much of what you need to know about the life you call your own. The challenge lies in understanding that we can’t hear what our body is telling us until we learn to acknowledge, accept, honor, and love it. Your body is a one-of-a-kind, customized vehicle in which your soul circumnavigates the planet; there is none other like it. How amazing is that! (Mine is a vintage, 1949 compact sports coupe – low slung and close to the ground – which doesn’t go nearly as fast or far as it used to, but it still gets me around.) Many people tend to move about their daily lives either oblivious to or obsessing about their vehicle; some drive theirs with great care and maintain it well, others, not so much. Often times, they do this (perhaps unconsciously) because they simply don’t like the model the Universe has issued to them. However, being omniscient, it’s safe to say the manufacturer knew exactly what it was doing when we were each delivered in

the body in which we came...and therein lies the lesson. So, depending on your perspective, your body is either a burden or a blessing. Which is it for you? With the coronavirus offering us ongoing opportunities to appreciate our bodies and good health this is an important question to explore. Accept and embrace your body and the moment – and all of that which is contained within in both – with a grateful heart; listen to what your body has to say because it constantly trying to tell you how to honor your life more fully. That is when the richness of being alive really kicks in and every breath you take becomes a blessing. Smile, breathe deeply, and love the body in which you live; it’s a rare and beautiful thing because there is not another one like it in all the Universe – its value is beyond measure. Peace, Dennis
