Who knows how long this condition will exist. In the past 10 days the 52-year-old Gulfport Gabber suspended printing, at least temporarily, and the Tampa Bay Times is only printing 2 days a week. Paradise NEWS has also been affected, and virus relief funds for us are uncertain, so it may be that we will have to at least STOP THE FREE MAILING at some time in the not too distant future.

TIDBITS ST. PETE BEACH Chris Graus won the District 1 Commissioners race with 413 votes over incumbent Terri Finnerty who received 332 votes. Chris is a Remax Realtor. Finnerty, who is in education, had served two terms following her husband’s term as mayor. Mayor Al Johnson and District 3 Commissioner Ward Friszolowski were re-elected unopposed. CABA, the Corey Area Business Association, is electing a new board this month. The group and event promoter Paragon ended a two-year relationship in March. It was concluded that while the events brought crowds to Corey, the amount the weekend events paid the group did not cover the costs to their businesses and did not belong on Corey Ave. TREASURE ISLAND Maribeth L Wetzel won the District 4 Commissioner seat with 291 votes (61%) over Richard Harris. Looking to complete in Spring 2020 is the Isle of Capri Water Booster Station Improvements Project. The nearly 40-year-old station will be renovated and upgraded to improve water service reliability, improve water pressure, improve operations and improve fire protection for Pinellas County water customers in Treasure Island and nearby communities. Pumping capacity will be increased to meet projected future demands and critical electrical equipment will be raised above a 17-foot storm surge level. Other improvements include new pumps, motors, valves, piping and electrical components to replace aging equipment and infrastructure. The project will also upgrade the facility’s appearance. The river rock on portions of the building’s exterior will be covered with stucco and painted, matching the existing wall color. MADEIRA BEACH John B. Hendricks is the City’s new mayor with 816 votes over Gary L. Hughes’ 570 votes. Mayor Maggi Black had decided 8

one term leading Madeira Beach was enough for her. Crystal Island in the City of Madeira Beach is home to more than 240 residences. The entire island is at or near sea level in elevation and prone to street flooding. In 2019, with streets nearing or beyond their expected lifespan and drainage systems suffering from years of sediment and biologic buildup, city officials decided to come up with a plan to address the problem. The vision outlined by city officials included fixing the streets on Crystal Island and other streets in the city which were deemed a priority. The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to move forward with the project and directed staff to put together a Request for Proposal (RFP). While the RFP was being developed, Pinellas County reached out to the city and asked to join the project to upgrade utilities such as fire hydrants, water services and replace the sanitary sewer force main on Crystal Island at the same time. The county estimated their portion would cost about $2 million. The city’s engineer estimated the street and drainage portion of the project would cost about $7.5 million. That brought the total estimated cost of the project to $9.5 million. Planned for March-April 1 is watermain installation and Stormwater system on Lillian Dr. and demo driveways/remove trees on John’s Pass Ave. and watermain installation in specified areas – stay tuned. GULFPORT April Thanos becomes the City Council member from Ward 1 defeating three-term incumbent Dan Liedke. Thanos won almost 60% of votes cast. On the agenda for the March meeting : A Resolution authorizing the City Manager to award the bid and enter into a contract with Midcoast Construction Enterprises, LLC for the Williams Fishing Pier Rehabilitation and a Resolution

Kozuba & Sons, a St. Petersburg-based craft distillery at 1960 5th Ave. S., has halted production on its artisanal vodka to reallocate its resources to produce hand sanitizer for the community following World Health Organization hand sanitizer formulation recommendations. “Shifting our full production line to hand sanitizer will allow us to remove all barriers for the production, rather than limiting the volume of hand sanitizer made from the production waste of other spirits,” said owner Matthias Kozuba. “That way, we can ensure a steady supply of hand sanitizer as long as our community needs it.” New businesses just opened downtown include Synergy Sports Medicine & Fitness Florida’s First Postural Restoration Center and Modern Optics, whose owner, Chuck Eubanks, says “life is too short for boring glasses.” We can’t agree more. The tool was created by USF Libraries and the GIS unit of the digital heritage and humanities collections. The map shows data reflecting real-time cases and deaths, broken down by counties. From there, it breaks down how many cases are residents versus non-residents, the average age, how many are men versus women, deaths and hospitalizations, and if they are travel related. Tampa Bay Partnership is calling
for one regional set of response policies to the COVID-19 crisis from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco County governments. Department of Environmental Protection closed all Florida State Parks in an effort to uphold CDC guidance to maximize social distancing and avoid gatherings but at press time, city parks like Boca Ciega Millenium and McGough were still open. Also cancelled are elective surgeries and most banks have closed their lobbies, offering drive-thru and in some cases, by appointment bank visits at press time. Hair salons and barber shops, nail salons and other non-essential services are closed for now in an abundance of caution – a good thing. Shelter in place in Pinellas County is the new norm as of noon March 26, dubbed “Safer At Home.” It means that all people should follow social distancing guidelines from the CDC (six feet of separation from others and no group gatherings larger than 10 people). In addition, everyone should stay at home as much as possible, limiting all non-essential activity outside the home. The Official Cybercrime Report from Cybersecurity Ventures estimates cybercrime damage costs may double due to the Covid-19 outbreak, such as malicious emails, or phishing attempts. Change and strengthen passwords, add security software and be vigilant. Health companies pivot and telehealth is on the rise, as are mental health resources online. News photos of Spring Break revelers on Clearwater Beach prompted Pinellas County to close down all 35 miles of county beaches at midnight. That’s understandable, but as the local paper pointed out today there could be enforcement problems. One big legal loophole (lawyers love this stuff) is that the county has jurisdiction over the beaches, but the state has jurisdiction over the gulf waters. Sooo, as the paper pointed out, the county cannot roust one from a beach walk if you only walk on wet sand. This of course creates the dilemma of crossing the dry sand to get to the wet sand. So far I haven’t seen anyone making a dash to the surf like an attempted steal of second base, hoping to slide into a wave before a police car cuts them off. But I did see 7 people still walking the beach — apparently on wet sand.

Celebrity Chef Robert Hesse, a fierce competitor on the fifth and sixth seasons of Hell’s Kitchen, has teamed with local restaurateur, Craig Munroe to launch Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz. This innovative new concept features what the creators describe as Chef Driven Grilled Cheese or “Meltz”. The team has already launched their state-of-the-art food truck and is preparing to open their first brick and mortar location on St. Pete Beach this month. The permanent location will serve St. Pete Beach and the surrounding area while the truck travels the country. If all goes as planned, franchising will follow with the intention to serve their delicious “Meltz” to the rest of the world. 14

At the end of 2019, Craig abruptly closed his A Slice Of New York to “concentrate on this new partnership.” Over the last few months, modifications have been in process at the old Fetishes building, located at 6305 Gulf Boulevard, St. Pete Beach. It will become the first of many locations for America’s newest and hottest food concept. Speaking with Chef Hesse, he explained that the food truck was designed by chefs, for chefs and has the ability to handle events of any size. It was scheduled to appear at major events throughout Tampa Bay and several events nationwide until they were all cancelled due to precautions against virus spread. In March, when dine-in restaurants were told to temporarily close, they quickly teamed up with Mastry’s Brewing Co., 7701 Blind Pass Rd. in an effort to help both businesses keep their staff employed. “Opening a new restaurant is never easy” said Craig, “but in a time of global pandemic fears, when authorities are declaring the beach is off limits, its especially difficult.” The good news is, people are lining up at the food truck (with appropriate social distancing of course) and some are taking home a six-pack of Mastry’s beer with their food. “We purchased cases of their delicious ‘Serve-Ace-Ahhh’ lager and are offering free six-packs with food orders over $50. It is the least we could do to thank Mastry’s Brewing for letting us park in front of their location,” Craig added. The truck has been open 7 days a week for carry-out and has been offering delivery to homes and businesses throughout St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island at no extra charge.
Chef Hesse explains that “this menu was designed for the masses with the intent to provide a gourmet experience without gourmet prices.” Hesse, who has spent the better part of his long career in fine dining, said that the most impactful advice he ever received while working for the infamous Gordon Ramsay was “If you feed the elite, you will live among the masses; If you feed the masses, you can live among the elite.” These words have driven his passion to launch a concept that does just that. Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz menu is the height of creativity with chef-inspired gourmet Twisted Meltz with names like: Juke Box Gyro, Mac N’ Rib, Frito Pie with beef chili, Buffalo Mother Clucker, War Pig, Big Poppa and That’s My Dawg, priced $8 - $12. Add a side of Crispy Tots dusted with Parmesan Herb and Dope Sauce for $5 or upgrade with Truffles, Smoked Bacon and more. You can also try their FoCheezy Mac N’ Cheese with a parmesan herb tater chip crust and Smoked Gouda for $6, or Slap Yo’ Mama Mater Soup with sharp cheddar and Cheezy herb croutons for $4. There’s Creamy slaw for $3 and Backdraft Beef Chili for $5. Their hand-crafted desserts like the Damn Skippy and Dough Boyz are available for $6. While speaking with the partners, we also learned about their real ambition and the alternative motive behind the new concept. “I grew up right here in Childs Park” said Hesse, “I was taken from my parents at a young age and moved from foster home to foster home. I got addicted to drugs, did all the wrong things and ended up in jail. I was given a second chance and it allowed me to find my passion for cooking. With the success I’ve obtained, I want to return the favor and give back to the kids in our community that otherwise might never get that second chance.” They are doing just that. “We have launched a new foundation named after a very familiar restaurant term.” said Craig. “No Kid 86’d is a charity that will focus on providing local kids with opportunities they might not have access to in this trying world. From college grants to career counseling, our goal is to offer them an alternative to what can often end up being a bleak future.” The company has already committed to donating 2% of their Gross Sales to their charity and plans to put on many events to raise money for the cause. The FO’CHEEZY “FO-LOSOPHY” is to set trends rather than follow them. With these innovative, one-of-a-kind MELTZ they seem to be hitting that goal. How they do it all is hard to imagine. Chef Hesse has also been working weekdays helping to launch the Social Roost in downtown St. Pete. While the virus fears have interfered with the anticipated arrival of kitchen equipment and branded disposable items coming from overseas, Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz location at 6305 Gulf Blvd still plans to open early in May. Mostly Positive Legislative Action On Key Gulf Beach Town Issues Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Thanks to key readership action, the recently-ended Florida Legislature session came up with mostly positive action on key issues affecting local communities. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Legislature sent a $93.2 billion budget to the Governor March 14 for his review that included $52.3 million, most from the Federal government, for COVID-19 response. Another $300 million is available in contingency funds for emergency response, in addition to a $3 billion emergency fund. Most important to all businesses and residents, the Legislature extended VISIT FLORIDA, the state’s major tourist marketing agency, for three years, with $50 million funding for the coming year, and approved $50 million as the state’s share of vital beach renourishment. While Coronavirus issues obviously took precedence in a daily-changing landscape, here’s a good update from spokesmen for both Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce (TBBC). Brian Lowack, Assistant to the Pinellas County Administrator and Intergovernmental Legislative Liaison, told Paradise News, “Proposed changes in short-term rental property rules would pre-empt local town governments from curtailing short-term rentals. 16

House HB 1011 and companion Senate SB 1128 failed to pass. While local towns cannot change local ordinances, they can enforce existing rules to prevent abuse of short-term rental activity. “Another key issue was to establish within the executive office of the Governor’s Office of Resiliency a Statewide Sea Level Rise Task Force to take action on recommendations. Legislation failed to pass. “Also, in support of a dedicated recurring source of funding for beach nourishment, both the House and Senate approved $50 million for maintaining current funding levels.” Doug Izzo, Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Director, updated final legislative action for Paradise News: Item: Support Reauthorizing & Fund VISIT FLORIDA VISIT FLORIDA will be reauthorized for three additional years (until October 2023) with a recurring appropriation of $50 million. This was a priority for the TBBC, which would like to thank Gov. DeSantis, Senator Ed Hooper and Rep. Mel Pondar for their support and leadership that ensure VISIT FLORIDA’s reauthorization and funding. Status: Legislation passed and is awaiting Governor’s signature Item: Support Water Quality Enhancement (Sewage Discharge Fees) SB 1450 & HB 1091 Description: Local governments have illegally dumped three billion gallons of sewage into our local Florida
waterways over the past 10 years; approximately 100 million in the past year alone. The state can spend billions trying to clean up our polluted waterways, but if local governments continue to pollute, our water quality will still suffer. SB 1450 & HB 1091 increases fines for local governments who continue to illegally dump untreated sewage into our waterways. Status: Legislation passed and is awaiting Governor’s signature. Item: Oppose Tourist Development Tax Expanded Use Legislation: SB 334 & No companion bill Description: SB 334 would expand the use of the Tourist Development Tax for film incentives. Though we support film incentives, not through this funding mechanism. We support the funding mechanism outlines in SB 350 & HB 497. Status: Legislation did not pass. Item: Oppose Tourist Development Tax Expanded Use Legislation: House Tax Package (HB 7097) Description: SB 334 would expand the use of the Tourist Development Tax for water quality projects. Status: Legislation taken out of tax package and did not pass. Item: Oppose E-Verify Mandate Legislation: SB 664 Description: SB 664 mandates all public sector contractors and subcontractors use E-Verify. Private employers are immune from civil and criminal liability for employing an unauthorized worker if the employer used E-Verify or the federal I-9 system and the system showed the employee was lawful to work. Status: Legislation passed and is awaiting Governor’s signature. Item: Support E-fairness Legislation: SB 126 & HB 159 Description: This legislation would level the playing field between online retailers and brick-and-mortar businesses by making sure they both collect and remit sales tax. Status: Legislation did not pass. Item: Support Water Quality Enhancement (Prohibit Injection Wells) Legislation: SB 454 & No related bill Description: Instead of fully treating their wastewater, some local governments want to just
simply inject sewage into the ground. This can be dangerous due to the proximity to our aquafers and waterways. SB 454 would prohibit the construction of new deep injection wells or the expansion of existing wells; requires current ocean outfall and deep well injection permitholders to install a functioning reuse system within the utilities service area by specified dates; prohibits the discharge of domestic wastewater through ocean outfalls and deep injection wells after specified dates. Status: Legislation did not pass. Item: Support Film Florida Rebates Legislation: SB 530 & HB 497 Description: States surrounding Florida offer incentives for filming in their state. COVID-19: Economic Impact Remains to be Seen by Sarah Laracuente In the beginning of March 2020, most of us were not aware of what was heading our way. Business was thriving, season was well underway for our districts. By Friday, March 13th, 2020, the waves of economic upset were crashing down along with the revenue numbers for our locally owned businesses. By March 22nd, 2020, there were furloughs and business closures. This is happening to all businesses, large and small. Our beach communities are made up of thousands of small, independently owned boutiques, restaurants, artists, attractions, and more. The SBA states that small businesses accounted for 65% of net new jobs in the United States (1), and that 81% of small businesses have no employees. I share all of this information to get to this. With the sadness and despair around the COVID-19 pandemic, we are left not only trying to keep everyone in our lives healthy, but we are also struggling with the want to help each small business we possibly can. What can we do?

Make Earth Day Every Day On April 22nd, Mother Nature will have her day in the sun. While official Earth Day celebrations may be cancelled, eco-kindness and sustainability never go out of vogue. Why not join Paradise News publishers and staff in making it Earth Day everyday in 2020. Plant A Garden: Order seeds, visit your local nursery and look on You Tube for gardening tips. Publisher Rene Roos has her Victory Garden ready in March, and we’re adding a rain barrel for our veggies this year by the bay. Don’t forget the compost (veggie peelings, tea bags and coffee grounds in a lidded pail work well.) And whenever possible, choose native plants or bee-friendly ones. Support Farmers: Order from produce co-ops and Brick Farms; shop farmers at the Saturday Morning Market, also offering online order pick-up from select vendors to keep stocked on fresh, local produce during the Coronavirus. Set up your pick-up at www.saturdaymorningmarket.com; and others when they return and be a good steward of the earth. Relearn to Recycle: Now: Kathryn Kellogg, author of 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste, reminds us that recyclables should be clean, but not spotless. Know your local recycling rules on your city or county website. And keep an eye out for the household electronics and chemical collection fairs. floridadep.gov In Your Kitchen: Cut down on food waste, use smarter storage containers and don’t run the water. Use refillable non-plastic water bottles and eliminate straws and paper plates/napkins in favor of dishes. Use Non-Toxic Cleaners: Consider homemade options or products such as Molly’s Suds offering safe, non-toxic cleaning products. For example, detergent ingredients like ionic surfactants, are the most persistent in the environment and change the sex of our fish and Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE’s), which have been banned in Canada and Europe, imitate the hormone estrogen in our bodies which affect our health and fetal development. These chemicals are found in our drinking water because they are not completely biodegradable. BYO Bags: In some cities, paper and plastic bags are banned, but you don’t need a law to do the right thing. Wash them when they’re dirty, and keep one for meat, one for veggies and fruits. Reuse & Repurpose: Turn a glass jar into a vase, repurpose a toilet tube to hold power cords and get crafty. Lots of ideas on Pinterest and YouTube. I use my Clorox Wipe containers to hold trash bags. Gently Used Treasures: Why buy new when you can buy furniture, dishes and clothes at a local thrift or vintage shop? Even Jane Fonda said recently she’s not buying new clothes and wearing what she has in her closet. Color Me Purple: Sketchbook or mandalas, use 24 Grip Eco-Pencils in flattering colors and made from sustainable wood to relax and unwind. www.Fabercastell.com Life’s A Gas: Without a car, that is! Remember to adjust your water heater temperature from the 140 degree F default to 120 degree F; they can use up to 15% of your home’s energy. Help Earth-Friendly Organizations: Tampa Bay Watch, Greenpeace and Surfrider Foundation do good for Mother Nature. Help pick up trash, make a donation and get involved with likeminded eco-friendly folks. Make sure the Great American Cleanup and International Coastal Clean Up are on your calendars. Support Green Businesses: Some things we plan to do when COVID-19 wanes is to book at hotels that have green certifications (Tradewinds, Don Cesar) and sustainable practices with conserving water and electricity. Ruth Eckerd Hall was certified Ocean Friendly by the Ocean Allies Group thanks to using compostable material products in F&B, eliminating straws and using eco-friendly cleaning products. Even McDonald’s is shifting to renewable and recyclable packaging materials and installing recycling bins onsite. Electric Charging Stations: Hats off to Duke Energy and Pinellas County Solid Waste and City of St. Petersburg for supporting electric vehicles and charging stations. From Junk To Reefs: Pinellas County has 42 reef sites along the Gulf Coast located from 100 yards to 38 miles offshore. Made from environmentally safe discarded materials (concrete pipes, steel beams or ships), that provide valuable underwater habitats for marine life. Educate Future Leaders: Guardians of the Gulf, a St. Petersburg based program for disadvantaged youth to learn about marine science, is among the 13 national winners of the IDC Smart Cities North America awards. Guardians of the Gulf is a collaboration between University of South Florida College of Marine Science, the St. Pete Innovation District and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast. It leverages the power of technology to provide children with web-based educational experiences, such as news-style broadcasts from researchers in the field, gamified learning and real-time sensors including underwater cameras and drones. It also gives underserved communities a voice in the dialogue surrounding escalating coastal threats. Clever Cafes: an initiative to encourage sustainability in the local community, Kawah Coffee Roasters will open their next café made from three reclaimed shipping containers and is the first of its kind to hit St. Pete.

It’s About Time I have been a coach for more than 25 years, and the number one concern I hear from my clients - whether they are competitive athletes or individuals interested in good health and wellness - is that they don’t have enough time. They may be an athlete looking to bump up their game to a new target race such as a marathon or triathlon or someone simply wanting to lose a few pounds and feel better about themselves. But the big worry is that there is just not enough time in their busy day. And this is an especially big concern to those who want to start new. How do you fit in time for exercise when your day is already crammed full?

Another thing to do is to choose the time of day that’s best for you to exercise. My own preference is to train first thing in the morning. I like getting it done before the activities of the day distract me from my daily workouts. But the actual time of day isn’t important as long as you make exercise a priority and a part of your daily routine.

Next is to choose an exercise regimen that you enjoy. Walking, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, pilates, tennis, kayaking are just a few things you can do. The list is long. Find and do what you enjoy. And here on the west coast of Florida where the air quality is the best in the country, get outside and enjoy it.

And last, if you’re just starting out with exercise, it’s OK to start small. Identify small achievable milestones that will lead up to your ultimate goal. Do more as you reach each milestone and get stronger. Remember: small steps will lead to big results.
Well, here are a few thoughts about how you can make fitness a routine part of your life. •

For starters, overcome the excuse of not enough time. Consider a typical week…168 hours. After you subtract time for sleeping (56), eating (21), and work/volunteering (40), you are left with 51 hours a week. If you allow 4 hours per day for miscellaneous chores, etc. you’re left with 23 hours a week. That’s more than enough time for your workouts, since most people need only 30 to 60 minutes a day. That’s less than 7 hours a week. Perform this mathematical exercise for yourself. The numbers may be a little different, but in the end, you’ll find that you do indeed have enough time in your week to schedule in exercise.

HANGING AROUND By Caron Schwartz This time last month COVID-19 was (choose your favorite): • A hoax • A reason to relearn how to wash your hands • Only dangerous for the elderly • We’re all gonna die, so let’s party like it’s 1999 Life was the “old normal,” so it was still acceptable to hang out in public places as long as you limited bodily contact to elbow bumps. One thirsty afternoon I headed for the Dog Bar in St. Pete’s Grand Central District. Officially, I’m a cat person. But I love dogs. I love dogs the way I love children. Other people’s dogs and other people’s children. I enjoy time spent with them and am happy to give them back. Sitting by my lonesome in a bar is not my ideal situation. It’s usually too dark to read and too loud to eavesdrop. As a “woman of a certain age,” I’m pretty much invisible, so even lame pickup lines are few and far between. But enjoying a cold one at the Dog Bar is different. You’re at a dog park with your beverage of choice (31 beers on tap and another 50 or so in cans, along with nitro cold-brew coffee and every cocktail known to mankind) while dogs of every description demonstrate how much fun it is to be a dog. Some jump in your lap to say hello, others greet you with a smile as they race each other to the bone-shaped pool. You can’t help but smile back. Me and my new friend Bruce solve the world’s problems at the Dog Bar.

Uncertainty is Not the Enemy—Fear of It Is When fear ceases to scare you, it cannot stay. — Gary Zukav The likelihood is that while I am sitting alone in my home writing this article you are sitting in your home alone (perhaps with other family members) reading it. In the past few weeks, the Coronavirus, spreading exponentially on a global level, has isolated us from one another and become our central point of focus, commanding the attention of the world—and understandably so. Unfortunately, some of the media is capitalizing on the news because fear always seems to sell. This is why we need to find the balance between being well informed and obsessively frightened by what we are being told. When collectively and mindlessly embraced, fear can make normally rational people act in irrational ways. There is deep wisdom in my friend Gary Zukav’s aforementioned quote, “When fear ceases to scare you, it cannot stay.” At first, it might appear that fear comes from the very thing we are fearing, be it a threat of physical harm, a scary prognosis from a doctor, a crashing stock market, the Coronavirus, etc. The reality is that fear is a feeling that wells up inside us as a reaction to an outer stimulus. That stimulus can, and does, change constantly. Fear is generally attached to a concern about the loss of something in our world of people, places, and things, such as one’s health, a job, a lifestyle, a relationship, a reputation, a title, or a material possession. It might even be a fear of the ultimate loss; the life of a loved one or even our own life. The question is, where does our ability to control anything lie? When driven by fear and uncertainty the herd mentality takes over and the stampede is on. Call it human nature but I think we are better than that. While very scary and tragic, this pandemic has also illuminated the very best in so many people. I am not just talking about our incredibly heroic doctors, nurses, scientists, and first responders who are putting themselves in the middle of this pandemic every day. I am also referring to the amazing folks who are keeping our pharmacies, grocery stores (and supply chains) open and supplied—as well as those businesses and individuals gearing up to make critically needed supplies. Of course, and then there are thousands upon thousands of regular folks like you and me working hard to adjust to the “new normal” of living in 32

quarantine and trying to honor the requests and mandates of our public officials as they try to get a handle on this crisis. As awakened, evolving human beings, we begin to realize there is great power in our ability to choose the filter (or lens) through which we see life. How we consciously perceive fear will determine our ability to step into the unknown with clarity and confidence—or not. The only thing we have absolute control over is our choice to either react mindlessly or respond mindfully to “what is” in the current moment. There it is: Uncertainty is not the enemy—the fear of uncertainty is. This pandemic invites us to get comfortable with learning how to be “out of control.” By this, I don’t mean being out of control with our actions, choices, and behavior; I mean understanding that while we may have no control over the future, or what “should or shouldn’t” happen tomorrow, we can alter the altitude of our attitude by developing an inner knowing that everything will ultimately return to a new normal. Let’s mindfully and proactively do what must be done today to stay safe and informed—but let us also remember, as the master teacher once said, “This too shall pass.” I love the acronym, EGBOK: Everything Gonna Be OK. We are ALL in this moment of crisis together and we need to be there for one another; that is how we get through this; together. I encourage you to support the local merchants and small businesses in our area—especially those who advertise in the Paradise News—because they are the lifeblood of our precious community; you’ll want them around when the new normal has passed. Support them online or any way you safely can, knowing that one day, sooner or later, life will find its balance once again and we’ll all be better and stronger because of it. I can’t know, for example, if there will be a state-wide (or even nation-wide) stay-home order in place by the time you read this (although it seems quite likely). If there is, it will almost certainly not require law firms to close their doors (although many will), as the courts will still be operating, although in a reduced capacity. Many people will feel an immediate need to quickly adjust their estate plans to current events, and buyers and sellers will still need help planning and closing real estate transactions. We here at Anderson & Brodersen, P.A. don’t claim to have all the answers, but we definitely plan to keep helping our clients cope with today’s challenges to the very best of our ability. New Construction “Flippers”... Can You Do That?? With the higher price points and inflationary increases of a new Florida home on the Intracoastal, some of our customers are purchasing a new home from GHD Construction Services, only to “Flip” the home at a nice profit by the time the home is complete in 10-12 months. This is especially profitable to existing homeowners that own an outdated waterfront home and have the opportunity to not only get the highest profit possible for their existing lot, but also make additional profit by selling a “Package” with the new home and lot included on their existing site. This has proven to be very profitable for these clients. There simply are almost no newly constructed homes for sale, raised to FEMA standards, on the market for buyers today. Almost all buyers today want newly constructed homes, with exciting Florida designs, energy efficient, built to FEMA standards. This housing product is almost non-existent today along the Pinellas beaches! While doing my homework studying proposed home sales prices in MLS, I’ve noticed a quite large disparity in home pricing, from what a lot will sell for in a neighborhood, and what GHD charges for a beautiful new home. GHD has a furnished model of 5400sf under roof (3042la) that sells for only $661,000, and by the time you place a value
of the waterfront property at $525,000 - $700,000, add a pool, dock, new seawall, etc., the entire new package would cost about $1,300,000. However, I’m seeing listings for new homes of this size at about $1,675,000 asking price. Will they get that? I don’t know, but I do know that there is a nice potential profit for an investor to “Flip” a new home package at possibly a very nice profit. Also, some homeowners on interior lots opt to construct a much smaller home priced from the mid to high $200’s to increase their overall property value. That is a definite opportunity for homeowners that own older homes on interior lots. So many of our customers are searching for a way to invest funds from their lifetime savings, in what has historically been a very safe and profitable venture, Florida real estate. One of our customers remarked that even if the replacement home that they purchased on their lot doesn’t sell for his anticipated $250,000 increased value, at least they have a beautiful new home to enjoy until Florida’s inflationary spiral continues to increase in future years. As another alternative to purchasing a new home for a potential nice profit, some homeowners allow us to advertise their lot in MLS, with a picture and price of a newly constructed home on that lot.
They list their lot as a “Coming Soon” package, complete with site sign and color rendering. GHD places the sign and markets the package with customers that come through our model daily, looking at various neighborhoods along the Pinellas beaches. We place the MLS listing which also gets published in Zillow and other social media, along with every real estate office looking for new housing product for their clients. It actually works quite well and doesn’t involve the cash investment of purchasing the new home yourself. Of course, that homeowner does not have the opportunity for the “Up-Side Potential” of selling both the lot and home, but that is an alternative option available today for existing homeowners. Stay Hydrated For Better Health By Frank Adornato
About 60% of the human body is comprised of water, and while water itself is not a nutrient, we need to drink water to stay properly hydrated and to maintain good health. Many people assume that dehydration happens only after intense exercise and sweating, but in reality, dehydration can occur at any time if you don’t drink enough water routinely. Staying properly hydrated offers many benefits, and here are just a few:
Prevents dry mouth. Keeps your body cool. Helps muscles and joints work better. Keeps skin supple. Helps cleanse your body - inside and out. Promotes cardiovascular health. We lose water from our bodies in many ways such as the water vapor in the breath we exhale, and in our sweat and urine. Along with water, small amounts of salts or electrolytes (sodium and potassium) are also lost. These electrolytes are necessary for proper nerve and muscle function. When we lose too much water and electrolytes, our bodies become out of balance or dehydrated. The first thing people usually become aware of with dehydration is thirst, but worsening dehydration can lead to extreme thirst, dark urine, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and in extreme cases, even seizures.

As the days get hotter and we become more active, we also become more prone to dehydration, and drinking liquids is that much more important. And if you’re exercising and sweating excessively, drinking sports drinks containing sodium and potassium is a good idea to replace lost electrolytes. Here are some routine things you can do to help stay properly hydrated. • Keep a glass of water on your night table next to your bed. We all wake up in the morning a little dehydrated so drink a full glass of water first thing. Starting each day with a full glass of water replenishes the water you lost from your body during sleep. And have another glass of water after breakfast to counteract the diuretic effects of your morning coffee. • Continue to drink plenty of liquids throughout the day every day - water and fruit juices. It’s a good idea to keep a water bottle handy so you can sip some water all day long. • If you’re exercising, consider carrying a water bottle or having one handy so you can sip water during your workout. • End the day with a tall glass of water before bedtime. If you are concerned about waking up in the middle of the night to urinate, have that last glass of water with or soon after dinner. That will give you a couple of hours to have it pass through your system and reduce the likelihood of a disturbed sleep. As a side note, alcoholic beverages - beer, wine and spirits - are diuretics and they can add to your dehydration. So don’t overdo it. The solution to prevent dehydration is simple: drink liquids all day, every day.

Of course, to take advantage of these online streams and events, high-speed Internet is key. And with schools, libraries, coffee shops and other WiFi-enabled venues closed for the duration, those on the far side of the digital divide can be out of luck. Local cable providers Spectrum and WOW! say they are ready to close the gap. Spectrum is offering two free months of Internet and WiFi services to new customers in households with pre-K to 12 or college students to ease remote education. WOW! is offering relief to customers, saying they will not disconnect WOW! services for customers in non-payment status. Instead they will help arrange a payment plan. They are also waiving late fees and will not institute rate increases.

Deadline for artist grants extended
Skyway 2020 (mfastpete.org/exh/ skyway-2020/) is a collaborative exhibition among the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Tampa Museum of Art and the USF Contemporary Art Museum of Art. The call for artists was open from June through September 2019 and generated 300 submissions from Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties.

And finally, when we get to travel again The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority approved contracts for seven artists to create and install artwork at Tampa International Airport through its $3.1 million budget for the public art program. Artist Matthew Mazzotta’s giant 21-foot tall flamingo structure will be the iconic centerpiece among the new pieces being installed. The artwork is meant to give visitors a preliminary taste of Florida. The flamingo is expected to be installed this November, and all installations are set to be complete by 2023.

In 2019, vinyl records outsold CDs for the first time in 40 years. Take that, Alexa! Whether you buy or sell vinyl (or CDs), Tampa Bay offers a cornucopia of amazing Record Stores celebrated best on National Record Store Day April 18th. While most may be closed due to the COVID-19 siesta, you can still do business with them online. Some of the best in town are ArtPool Records, Asylum Sights and Sounds, Banana Records, The Clearwater Record Shop, Daddy Kool Records (my fave), Disc Exchange, Dunedin Records and Audio, Planet Retro Records, Sound Exchange, St. Pete Records and Vintage Vinyl. By Dr. Scot Trefz, D.V.M. Common Health Problems in Large Breed Dogs Your large breed dog may be at increased risk of developing one or more of these conditions:
Hip and Elbow Dysplasia - occur due to malformations in the hip or elbow joints. The joints can grind or rub together painfully. The condition may eventually cause arthritis, joint degeneration and inflammation, lameness, and difficulty climbing stairs or jumping. Dysplasia is often inherited and can cause symptoms early in your pet’s life. Maintaining a healthy weight is particularly important for dogs with hip dysplasia. Even a few extra pounds can increase pressure on the joints. Although pain medications and joint supplements might improve your pet’s comfort, surgery may be needed in some cases. Bloat, or Gastric Torsion - happens when your dog’s stomach stretches, then twists or rotates. This life-threatening condition can prevent blood from reaching the stomach or other parts of the body and may cause tears in the walls of the stomach. If your dog doesn’t receive immediate veterinary treatment, he or she may die. Bloat symptoms include swollen stomach, drooling, anxiety, pacing, inability to vomit, shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat. Your pet’s veterinarian can decrease pressure in the stomach by inserting a tube into the stomach or puncturing it with a needle if the tube won’t fit due to twisting. Surgery can restore the normal position of twisted stomachs. Heart Problems - Symptoms of dilated cardiomyopathy include coughing, rapid breathing, weakness, fatigue and fainting. Medications may help control irregular rhythms and delay the progression of the disease or the development of congestive heart failure. Aortic stenosis is a condition that restricts blood flow to the heart due to a narrowed aorta. If your dog’s condition is mild, there may be no obvious signs. Dogs more severely affected may have trouble breathing, breathe rapidly or faint. Heart medications can be helpful for some dogs. In severe cases, cardiac catheterization may be recommended to widen narrowed areas. Eyelid Conditions - Entropion and ectropion can affect the eyelids of big dogs, causing pain and irritation. Eyedrops and ointments that protect the sensitive tissues of the corneas and the lining of the eyes can be helpful if your pet has a mild form of either condition. Surgery may be recommended for severe cases. Regular veterinary care helps you safeguard your big dog’s health. They will love you for it! FISHING Hubbard’s Marina and fishing charters are closed for at least two weeks March 23rd – April 7th. They report a lot of the mackerel through our inshore areas right now. Especially around the passes, jetties, just off the beaches and around the bait schools up in the bays. Unfortunately, the Skyway fishing piers are currently closed, along with Fort de Soto piers and Big Pier 60 due to COVID-19 but there’s still local jetties and seawalls you can find to cast for these fun to catch fish. If you have your own boat fishing around the skyway, or local passes is a great way to target these fish. Trout bite has been hot this past week around the area. They love those soft plastics around the edges of the flats, mangrove shorelines and residential docks during the day. At night, great spots to target them are the dock lights or bridge lighters where you can find the bait. They will eat some live shrimp or white bait if you don’t like to use the lures to catch them. Keep in mind though, snook, redfish and trout are all still catch and release only here. Redfish bite was also pretty steady this past week around the residential docks. They love those soft plastics, gold spoons, or suspended twitch baits for lure choices. However, they will eat live shrimp, white bait or small pinfish if you prefer live bait options. Sheepshead are still biting very well through the area and these guys are able to be kept so more anglers are targeting them right now to try and catch something to take home to eat. Small piece of shrimp and around a 1ot hook and 20lb leader and the lightest weight possible is my favorite method. However, cut clams or oysters will work well too. Pompano are around bridges near the passes working the sandy drop offs along the edges of the bridge channels. Flounder are biting decently in sandy potholes, around docks in passes. Near Shore – The hogfish bite is still going well near shore too but slowing down as the water warms. The kingfish and mackerel bite is definitely the big news near shore right now with tons of kingfish showing up in our area from around 30-90 foot of water. They love to go after live white bait or smaller blue runners on those kingfish stinger rigs. Here’s the link to that page www.hubbardsmarina.com/fishing-tips OffshoreMangrove snapper bite was off the chain in late March in around 120ft of water. They definitely were preferring 30-40lb leaders and the double snelled 5-6ot hooks and chunk of the threadfin plug. While targeting the mangroves like this we also caught plenty of large vermillion snapper, some big porgies, a few almaco jacks, and even some of the grouper too like the red grouper, scamp grouper, and those yummy strawberry groupers. We even had a 2.76lb red hind or strawberry grouper. This doesn’t sound like a monster but when most are 8-14 inches a nearly 22inch nearly 3lb one is a gigantic fish!
