Summer storms are a fact of life in the tropics. We have been incredibly lucky in the past, and there are a lot of newcomers amongst our readership that have not even had to evacuate yet. So, it is good to remind residents that the “season” is starting. Sea level rise is happening too, more quickly affecting the Miami area than here, so we get to learn from their successes. A new subscriber recently asked if their issue could come sooner, because when it lands in the mailbox, half the month is over. We said yes, you can see it online, most months from the first of the month at www.paradisenewsfl.com, but I also said that if you keep and continue to refer to each issue until the new one arrives in the mail, you will miss little. You see, the magazine is designed so that if you find it online on the first, you will see what is going on this week, but if you get it in the mail, what you miss was in last month’s edition, so you should not have missed it at all, unless you threw last month’s away before this month’s arrived. If you need a preview, by all means, look online, and/or sign up for the FREE “weekly” digital newsletter we publish every Thursday with links to the issue online and the top things going on each weekend. We have been sending it to FREE online subscribers for years now. The next print issue is our first bimonthly, the June-July edition, followed by August-September, and then back to monthly in October. In each bimonthly edition we supply 10 weeks of art and leisure and event information to get you through the entire summer without a hitch. Thank you for being a loyal reader. If you find yourself reaching out to an advertiser or someone who was written about in the issue, please let them know you read about them in Paradise NEWS. It’s sea turtle nesting season May 1-Oct. 31 on Southwest Florida beaches. On nesting beaches, light from waterfront properties can disorient nesting female turtles and their young, which emerge at night and use dim natural light to find the sea. Also, beach furniture, trash and other obstacles can impede sea turtles and their young. See the tips below for how you can help keeping nesting seaturtles & hatchlings safe. Click the link or qr code below for some helpful tips to keep our beaches turtle-friendly. www.paradisenewsfl.com/sea-turtle-dos-and-donts

Support Your Mental Wellness 6 Ways by Colette Florido

anxiety by releasing dopamine and endorphins, the neurotransmitters responsible for feelings of happiness and pleasure.

The last few years have been stressful for everyone. Many feel both their physical and mental fitness have been impacted.

Bonus that you’ll be raising your heartrate and working muscles while engaging the neocortex with music, reducing impulsivity and creating calm.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The Centre@St.PeteBeach has programs to help. Check these out.

4) Art and Healing – Using the creative brain relieves stress and supports cognitive function. Join a Pour and Paint session and watch your stress melt away while creating a work of art.

1) Sound Bowl Therapy – Since our bodies are mostly water, vibrational sound waves easily pass through us. Our cells respond to the vibration from these Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls. People report pain relief and increased focus. 2) Meditation and Breathwork – Our brains associate emotions to breathing patterns. That means you can actually trick your brain into a better emotional state by altering your breathing. Meditative work helps you practice getting in the moment and staying there. These habits can reduce anxiety and provide clarity.

5) Try a free sample of CBD. Studies show CBD can alter serotonin levels, reducing depression. 6) You can also purchase Delta-8 at the Centre, which is an analgesic and can help with both pain and stress all at once. Obtain your medical marijuana recommendation from Triverde Health. Call 727-322-4588 for an appointment. The team will walk you through the process and by the time you leave your appointment, you’ll be ready to purchase medicine at a dispensary.

3) For a different perspective join the Aerial Yoga class and hang around for a therapeutic stretch. Feel like a kid again! You can attend a FREE Shake it off! From Beginning Cannabis 101 class to ask Belly Dance class to one-onspecific questions and find the one salsa or ballroom dancing, best products for you. “Late 2019, I had lost my father to lung cancer and eight months later my stepmom passed away from breast cancer and a brain tumor. To describe my state of mind would be doom and emotional breakdown…I didn’t want to go anywhere or see anyone… I was afraid to leave my home. I felt incomplete and so sad most the time, I had just lost my hero… I went to my primary care physician for help with insomnia, grief, and trying to get by day by day.

Text NAMI to 741-741 to receive free, 24/7 crisis support via text message. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: If you or someone you know is in crisis–whether they are considering suicide or not– please call the toll-free Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) to speak with a trained crisis counselor 24/7. Referrals are received through the Senior Helpline by calling 727-217-8111.

I was provided with some medications, filled all and felt like I was living in a daze. Then I secured a medical marijuana card through Triverde Health and since I have been taking THC and CBD for a little over two years now, I have weaned myself off of all prescribed medications and the hazy days are gone forever.” Female, 49, St. Petersburg

ST. PETE BEACH We are blessed with our share of Chambers of Commerce. The Best Beaches in the U.S. have two awesome groups, the Tampa Bay Beaches and the Treasure Island / Madeira Beach Chambers of Commerce. We have been active members of both for years. Then there’s Gulfport. Renee and Peter Roos appeared on the cover of the Gulfport Gabber in 2007 when Paradise NEWS was named The Greater Gulfport Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. St. Petersburg, too, has an outstanding group. Ribbon cuttings and mixers are back and the weather’s been incredible. Visit them online, find out what is going on, and join in. We have been active members of all of them and they definitely contribute to our continuing success. The “Beaches Chamber” has a “Business Referral Team” (BRT) that meets early on the first and third Thursdays each month. That has been, hands down, the best investment of my marketing time. I’m really surprised it is not a larger group. There is no cost beyond chamber membership. 8

PINELLAS COUNTY Future seawalls to be higher, stronger and better Despite more natural innovations like “living” shorelines, seawalls aren’t going anywhere in Florida except up. With thousands of miles of coastline facing two feet of sea level rise by 2060, some cities and counties are already calling for raising the standard heights of seawalls. And many of the seawalls to come in the decades ahead promise to be different, not only stronger and more durable, but better designed to both absorb waves and reduce damage to the adjacent sea or bay bottom. Others are designed to encourage sea life to inhabit honeycomb portions of the design. A major advance will be a move from steel to fiberglass rebar, which is expected to vastly extend seawall life in the future.

Eckerd Hall and Vinik’s Imagine LLC, among others, are vying to manage the new amphitheater that will be built in downtown Clearwater. The amphitheater is part of the city’s $84 million Imagine Clearwater development, which aims to transform Coachman Park on Drew Street into an urban waterfront park development for recreation and entertainment uses that would help attract residents and tourists to an underutilized part of downtown.

Ascent St. Pete will celebrate its topping off on April 29. Rising higher than any other rental community in the Tampa Bay region, Ascent St. Pete provides residents incredible, 360-degree views of Tampa Bay as well as the Gulf of Mexico. The project will feature outdoor pool amenities at both the sixth and 36th floors. Ascent St. Pete is scheduled to open in January 2023 with final construction completion slated for May 2023. Tesla has proposed to transform the Kane’s Furniture

By Peter Roos liquidation center in Lealman into a state-of-the-art delivery and repair center. The 100,000+ square-foot facility will be converted into an automotive store where customers can learn about different Tesla models, test drive, purchase, lease and have their vehicles serviced. St. Petersburg-based Apogee Real Estate Partners, led by John Stadler and John Barkett, plans to build a $49 million 23-floor mixed-use tower at 155 17th St. S. adjacent the Pinellas Trail. The tower will have a café space, 204 apartments, a 300-space parking garage and a roofed “urban porch” along the trail, to include 4,600 square feet of retail space. The Pinellas County Commission, together with dozens of business and community partners, broke ground in mid-February for a new, 45,000 square foot state-of-the-art business incubator. The facility, slated for completion in 2023, will drive economic impact by catalyzing future startups and technology companies in the Tampa Bay region. The ground-breaking ceremony was held at the site of the future ARK Innovation Center, which will house the incubator that will become known as the Tampa Bay Innovation Center, 1101 Fourth St. S, St. Petersburg. “The new ARK Innovation Center perfectly fits with the Pinellas County strategic goal of accelerating job growth in our economy. I am proud of the collective leadership and work to leverage our partnerships and grant opportunities to create this new incubator,” said Charlie Justice, chair of the Pinellas County Commission.

Distracted Driving Awareness Month By Lauri Sullivan You wouldn’t drive with your eyes closed, would you? When you type a text, or even read a text, you’re taking your eyes off the road for several seconds. It doesn’t feel like a long time, but you may be surprised to know that in just five seconds, a car driving at 55 mph can travel the length of an entire football field. A lot can happen in the time it takes for you to write a text. A child can run into the road or the car in front of you might slam on their brakes. With your eyes on your phone, you might swerve into the bike lane. Driving a car demands your full attention and taking your eyes off the road can be fatal. The statistics about distracted driving are alarming. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 424,000 people were injured in 2019 in crashes involving a distracted driver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,142 people died due to distracted driving in 2020. That’s almost nine people every day dying because someone had to check their phone, put on lipstick, or adjust their radio. Approximately one in five of those fatalities were pedestrians or people outside a vehicle – joggers, bike riders, or people pulled over to the side of the road. Students also learn to be a good passenger. Passengers can be the designated texter and navigator, leaving the driver free to focus on driving. Teens can be pretty confident about their ability to multi-task. With so many attractions pulling them in different directions all the time, they may think that driving can just be added to the mix. Drivers can be stopped and ticketed for texting while driving. That includes typing, sending, or reading a message. You are allowed to text when parked, or when stopped at a red light. You can also use a phone in hands-free mode, for navigation, for receiving safety or traffic alerts, and some other exceptions. It’s still much safer to focus on driving than to look at your phone for any reason. What about law enforcement officers, many people ask? They sometimes have to operate a motor vehicle while using their in-car laptop, cell phone, or radio. Law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical professionals are exempt and they also receive special training to drive in higher risk situations.

Broke N’ Bored Grill has expanded their indoor dining room, and their drunken shrimp with garlic toast points, pulled pork nachos, smoked carnitas tacos with pineapple slaw, cast iron ribeye and blackened hog fish sandwich rock. Say aloha to MacDinton’s downtown and happy hello to Caddy’s Indian Shores in the former Pub location, bigger and better than ever. With live entertainment weekdays 3 and 6pm, noon and 6pm weekends, you can arrive by boat or car and enjoy the expanded patio and tiki. Notable on the menu are the sesame-crusted ahi or crab cakes topped with key lime remoulade, grouper Reuben, haddock and chips, pork belly tacos (also at VIP in IRB) and the cucumber Mojito.

The Redingtons serve up Stan’s Wine Bar, Stan’s prix-fixe fine dining, Coastal Tacos and Coastal Pizza, my shrimp pizza go-to spot. The wine bar offers a small boutique wine list, sleek new interior, and delish small plates, all from the same owner. In Tyrone, Portillo’s Chicago hot dogs and onion rings are first-class. Pee-Pa’s Garage Craft Brewery opens in Pinellas Park. 14

St. Pete Beach’s Sunday market will continue all summer, YAY! At Toasted Monkey, the divine view of Blind Pass, awesome rock bands and Asian friend shrimp, fish tacos and Reuben paired with the excellent Bloody Marys and service make for a great escape. Dine in or take out from The Helm St. Beach Provisions & Coastal Fare where she crab soup, lobster roll, Boursin tenderloin steak sandwich with caramelized onions, raw bar and picnics-to-go are lovely.

On Tierra Verde, The Island Grille & Raw Bar’s seafood dishes, raw bar (sample the oyster flight), craft cocktails and live music captivate, especially the island tacos, shrimp salad wrap and spicy tuna poke bowl. Gulfport Pia’s Trattoria & Verandah has a new menu (creamy goat cheese polenta, rare, seared yellowfin tuna, beef tenderloin) and the expanded restaurant next door features live music. 3 Daughters opened a tasting room in Clearwater Beach above Ron John’s, just a kiss away from Cooter’s best Bloody Mary’s and Frenchy’s grilled octopus.

The Restorative

Stan’s Wine Bar

We can’t wait for the May opening of Mad Beach Cantina, the menu, tiki, music, and authentic Mexican cuisine with a “Florida flow.” Make sure you stock up on your marinades and rubs from The Spice & Tea Exchange in Treasure Island for barbecue season.

Fiona Wednesday wine down at Elizabeth’s Wine Shop on Corey Ave. is our humpday favorite, especially for the dancing, charcuterie, and authentic pierogi as well as the $25/person five-wine tasting and personal platter. New is the Sat./Sun. brunch charcuterie. Be sure to browse her boutique next door for the perfect Mother’s Day gift and outfit. Enophiles will fall in love with the Sunset Wine Club at Sea Grapes, Sip and Pasadena’s Vino Simpatico’s happy hours. RumFish Grill’s dinner (steaks, seafood, raw bar) and bar menu (Florida snapper ceviche, oysters, shrimp tacos) and a festive happy hour till 5pm is a perfect outing.

Dunedin never disappoints, from brunch at Bon Appetit with live music to the new American cuisine star, The Restorative, where husband and wife chef/owners Jason and Erin “Cricket” Boraikiewicz change the stellar menu seasonally during the week. I enjoyed the naan bread and 20-ingredient butter, chilled asparagus with truffled aioli, blistered snap peas and halibut, then polished off the decadent chocolate bread pudding. Treasure Island’s Coffee Grounds gets a new home downtown with Caps St. Pete seafood resto.

HOLISTIC HEALTH

By Camilla Nichols, M.S.

Reiki Maybe you’ve heard of Reiki but don’t quite know what it is or whether it’s right for you.

your energies? A reiki massage is a no-touch treatment where the practitioner is guided by intuition to rebalance one’s energy and focus on areas, physically and otherwise, that need healing.

Some physicians suggest Reiki as a complementary therapy to existing medical treatments. Reiki is an ancient healing tradition and Japanese for Universal Life Energy. This energy is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient.

As a young adult I was first introduced to Reiki when I took my mom, who had MS, to a friend who did traditional massage and Reiki. Constant tremors caused Mom’s left arm and shoulder to shake. During her Reiki treatment, her shaking stopped.

Eastern healing traditions, like Reiki, focus on energy in many different modalities. Acupuncture unblocks your energy meridians. Tai Chi or Qigong helps realign energy and keep it flowing. Yin and Yang are also energy concepts, in a constant state of balancing and affected by emotion, stress, diet and health.

I started researching Reiki and in 1999, became a Reiki instructor and helped many people with various health issues. It may promote natural self-healing, stimulate your body’s immune system, relieve pain and tension, reduce stress, foster tissue and bone healing after injury or surgery. It also may support the well-being of people receiving medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and kidney dialysis. (Reiki treatment should not be used as a substitute for the consultation of a physician or a psychotherapist.)

Many believe that Universal Life Energy is pure, unconditional love. Energy should flow freely, like water. If it does not it can become stagnant. Our energy can become blocked or stagnant as well. This leads to imbalance in mind, body and spirit. How can Reiki massage help you realign

Are you open to a body, mind and spiritual energetic experience? You have nothing to lose but possibly much to gain. One of my favorite quotes is by Voltaire: “Once is an experiment. Twice is a habit.” I invite you to learn about Reiki and experience it. When you’re ready, contact me 727-534-1406 or email info@simplethings.world for a session at The Centre in SPB or the Peaceful Wellness Warriors in downtown St. Pete. Until then, be well and be balanced.

In addition to her role with TFO next season, Gallo will be a regular guest conductor with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. “I could not be more thrilled to join The Florida Orchestra and work under the leadership of Michael Francis,” Gallo said. “I’m especially excited to be part of the orchestra’s innovative programming in the concert hall and in the community. HEALTH & WELLNESS By Ryan L. Baker, M.D., FAFFP

The Key to Managing Arthritis is You “People with osteoarthritis who take part in their own care report less pain, have fewer doctor visits, and enjoy a better quality of life.” Sore joints and an aching back are some of the most common complaints I hear from my patients; it’s every day, several times a day. Most often it turns out to be osteoarthritis (OA). It’s the most common form of arthritis among older people, and it’s one of the most frequent causes of physical disability for older adults. Symptoms of OA can range from stiffness and mild pain to severe joint pain and swelling. The most common complaint I hear is stiffness and pain after getting out of bed in the morning. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the hands, lower back, neck, knees, hips, and feet. It affects both men and women, and your chance of developing osteoarthritis increases with age. Before 45, it’s more common in men, and after 45, it’s more common in women.

Establish with our NEW primary-care provider TODAY for all your healthcare needs.

Ryan L. Baker, M.D. Family Medicine

The Arthritis Foundation recommends before you visit your doctor, keep track of your symptoms for a few weeks, noting what is swollen and stiff, when, for how long and what helps ease the symptoms. Getting an accurate diagnosis is the next step so you can begin a treatment plan that will protect your mobility and quality of life. We can easily confirm an arthritis diagnosis with patient history and an X-ray. Then it’s about symptom management at that point. It’s all about how bad is the pain and how much can you tolerate. OA can’t be cured, but symptoms can be managed with treatment plans that include weight control, simple stretching exercises, OTC anti-inflammatories, as well as steroids for an acute exacerbation. Injections and eventually joint replacement surgery are last resort treatments. The real key to living with the disease is the patient. In fact, research shows that people with osteoarthritis who take part in their own care report less pain, have fewer doctor visits, and enjoy a better quality of life. Don’t just ignore aches and pains. Arthritis is a degenerative condition, it’s not going away, and the whole goal is to be kind to your joints and delay the progression as much as you can. ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS ALL CDC GUIDELINES FOLLOWED, PLUS SOCIAL DISTANCING

CBD & WELLNESS By Margo Gilliland

Older Adults Are Trying Hemp One in seven Americans use CBD products, most commonly for relief from pain, anxiety, poor sleep, and arthritis. Older adults and senior citizens are among the fastest growing group of cannabis consumers. It makes sense, as many seniors have serious health concerns for which cannabis might be helpful. Other seniors are looking for safe recreational aids to stay active with less pain and suffering in their golden years. Cannabis is the parent plant type of both marijuana and hemp. Hemp is essentially cannabis or marijuana with so little (less than 0.3%) THC that hemp will typically not produce any euphoric psychoactive effects while retaining other medical benefits. Cannabis has been used for many thousands of years and known as a safe intoxicant for recreational enjoyment for almost as long. In fact, stigma against cannabis has only flourished within the last 90 years under American-led cannabis prohibition. Cannabis has been used as an effective medicine since antiquity and may be able to be used in many ways for your unique health and wellness needs! Finding the best cannabis products for you will require experimentation to discover what product or combination of products work best for you. My journey with cannabis began growing up in Seattle as a teen. My doctor sent me to The AIMS Institute in Seattle because nothing else helped me. At the Institute, world renowned MDs, many with PhDs in botany, research how best to have effective results for patients utilizing the cannabis plant. I finally received the help I needed and, in the process, gained a vast knowledge about cannabis. I knew I wanted to help others have access to this science and get the much-needed help I had received. I opened The Goods. CBD. Hemp. Relief. at 2939 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33713 to serve the St. Petersburg community. All the hemp CBD and cannabis products flooding the market can be intimidating and confusing. I help my customers by combining good cannabis science with my personal usage experience. I am also committed to providing high quality products that are organic and lab tested. I am enjoying getting to know many of you. If we have not met or you would like to learn more, please stop by or call me at the store, 727-289-6020. If you would like to gather some friends, I am always happy to share my knowledge and educate about cannabis. You can meet my store dog, Oliver! No medical card is ever needed at The Goods. backup electronic data; equipment, computer software/ hardware and furniture inventories; a list of emergency vendors, like plumbers and restoration contractors; Copies of essential business policies, plans and agreements; photographs of the business, both inside and out. Business preparation tips: Take the necessary precautions. As a storm threatens, secure your building. Cover and move equipment and furniture to a secured area, always protect your data with backup files, make plans to work with limited cash and probably no water, sewer, or power for at least two weeks. Contact your customers and suppliers regarding your continuity plans. Protect windows and glass doors. Clear the property or tie down any items that could become flying missiles. Fill fleet cars and equipment gas tanks. Turn off electricity, water and gas. If your business is in a non-evacuation area, think about having your business serve as a host home shelter for employees. Employees need TLC: Communicate your business hurricane plan with your employees. Remember, too, that your associates may need some extra consideration. Probably all your employees need time to prepare their own homes and talk with their families about their own personal emergency plans. Business interruption insurance: Business owners need to think about what they would do if their buildings were unusable after a storm. Understand that business interruption insurance will compensate you for lost income if your company has to leave the site because of disaster-related damage; be sure that the policy will cover your company for more than a few days. After a disaster, it may take more time to get back up and running – ask what the waiting period would be before the insurance coverage begins. Explore the cost of adding this coverage to your specific business type. Some businesses, like restaurants, might have to pay a higher premium based on risk. Special note for home-based businesses: All businesses, large and small, are thinking about emergency preparedness. And, home-based business owners should be doing that too. “Home-based business owners should be aware that after a 24

MAY 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

disaster, they may qualify for SBA Disaster Loans and possibly unemployment benefits, if they are unable to work,” said Corey McCaster, senior manager, Small Business & Diversity Suppliers in Pinellas County Economic Development (PCED). A To-Go Box is another critical item every home-based business owner should pull together. One action to take right now is to back up computer information on CDs or another portable medium. Store those backups in the To-Go Box too. Take photos of your home office, both inside and out, to take along. “Just like all business leaders, home-based business owners should ensure they safeguard essential business documents and information in a Go Box,” said McCaster. “Ideally, that box should be backed up in an alternative location in the event the home is destroyed.”

RE-ENTERING THE COUNTY Sheriff Gualtieri emphasizes,“If you live in a barrier island community, make sure you are registered for and know where you’ve placed your Emergency Access Permit. When a mandatory evacuation order is lifted, law enforcement officials will scan these permits at designated re-entry points. Barrier island residents may register directly with their city government during its general office hours year-round, so don’t wait until an evacuation order has been issued to secure yours. “If you registered for and still possess your Emergency Access Permit from years prior, you DO NOT need to register again. If you don’t know if you need a permit, visit www.pcsoweb.com/ emergency-access-permit or call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 727-582-6200.” The County Emergency Management website notes that if you have evacuated out of the area, returning home can have some challenges if a storm has done significant damage to the county. Bridges and roads may be closed due to damage, flooding, or debris. Officials may have entire areas closed off to everyone, even residents. It’s important to remember that coming home is not a guarantee. So before heading home, be sure to watch or read the news to learn the latest information about road conditions and damage reports for Pinellas County and surrounding areas.

TREASURE ISLAND The city of Treasure Island will hold its Hurricane Expo Wednesday, May 25, from 6:30-8:30pm, at City Hall, 120 108th Ave., Mercedes Nelson-Palmer, administrative assistant, Treasure Island Fire Rescue, told Paradise NEWS.

Pinellas County Emergency Action Center

For re-entry post-evacuation, the permit should be hung from your vehicle’s rearview mirror. Law enforcement posted at city entrances will scan the barcode on your permit to verify your residence. With your help, local police and Sheriff’s officers will be able to keep trespassers from easily accessing your property. Permits are available in every barrier island City Hall (Clearwater residents can also go to the police department and in Tierra Verde to the fire station). Get your re-entry permit NOW! Sheriff Gualtieri emphasizes,“Finally, stay connected. Leading up to a potential hurricane or other emergency, it is our top priority to keep citizens informed so that we can all get through it together and as efficiently as possible. “Follow the Sheriff’s Office and Pinellas County Government on Facebook and Twitter and look for ‘#GetReadyPinellas’ for posts including preparation tips, situation-specific details, evacuation orders, etc. Also, download the free ‘Ready Pinellas’ app in the App Store or Google Play to receive updates as they are issued. “Keeping citizens safe is everyone’s responsibility. We might not know when and where the next disaster will strike, but with proper preparation and open communication, we can be ready for it.”

Their high-energy one-of-a-kind performance features true-to-the-original cover versions of today’s new country hits from Luke Combs, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Kane Brown, LOCASH, Luke Bryan, Darius Rucker, Jon Pardi, Brothers Osborne and much more. ACOUSTIC DELIGHTS Unplugged musicians take the ragged jag off the day at local markets, best with cool libations at Flute & Dram (Josh Geercken, Brandon Marsh), Ale and The Witch (Applebutter Express May 13), or cappuccino at Haus Coffeehouse (Gypsy Wind). Gypsy Wind’s acoustic, jazz, folk and bluegrass music is stellar, thanks to four seasoned performers on mandolin, guitar, banjo, bass and vocals

who have played with legendary artists like Bill Monroe and Pat Metheny, and influenced by everyone from Beck to Thelonious Monk, and Emmy Lou Harris to Bob Dylan. You can also catch them at Florida Folk Festival 5/27, Bayboro Brewing 5/30 and James Museum 6/7.

Nashville, TN and Clearwater, with a new single release out 5/5 @ OCC Roadhouse. Collins performs 5/14 Fat Cat Tavern Largo, 5/20 Gerstle’s Clearwater, 5/21 Whiskey Wings Clearwater and 5/28 Whiskey Wings Tyrone. The all-time best country bar in Tampa Bay, of course, is Dallas Bull, with many big-time country acts kicking up their cowboy boots here. OCC Road House & Museum is hosting a two-day concert event (May 13-14) featuring live performances from popular southern rock and rock groups The Steel Woods (May 13) and Jackyl (May 14).

Applebutter Express’s song “Hey My Brotha,” was featured in the Ron Howard film “The Good Lie” starring Reese Witherspoon (2015). The band’s story begins in 2004, when Kyle Biss met his future wife Shannon while working at a record store in Bradenton. Still a focused bass player, Kyle picked up a ukulele in 2010 and began to write songs, with the idea of singing with Shannon (his then girlfriend) for fun on the couch. Pretty soon the duo began making a name for themselves among the open mic community; in no time, the eclectic, tuneful duo – now known as The Applebutter Express – were the talk of Tampa. Kyle and Shannon married in 2011. Zach Rogers (bass) joined in 2015 and newest member Jason Baker (fiddle) started in 2020. Since then, The Applebutter Express has performed at such prestigious festivals as Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Hulaween, Suwannee Springfest, and many others.

Baseball is Back! by Peter Roos

The Tampa Bay Rays’ mission is to energize the community through the magic of Rays baseball. After coping with a shortened season and social distancing restrictions due to the pandemic the past two years, the Rays are bringing back the fun. Located just a few blocks from downtown St. Petersburg and a short drive from Tampa is Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. Tropicana Field’s 1.1 million square feet include unique design features and fan amenities found nowhere else in the Major Leagues. It’s the last dome stadium in baseball and a place where both fans and players

can escape the summertime humidity and constant threat of rain. One of the most unique features at Tropicana Field is the Rays Touch Tank, a 35-foot, 10,000-gallon tank, where fans can touch live rays. It is located just beyond the fence in right-center field. Upon entering the seating area, fans view a sea of blue seats. The Tampa Bay Rays are motivated to fill those seats. This season, Tropicana Field is operating at full capacity: fans will enjoy new concessions, draft beer and fountain soda, plus enhanced technology that will get you through the concession lines more quickly and back to the game. Kids will have a chance to run the bases on Sunday.

PROPERTY LAW

Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.

NEED A LAWYER? Great! We can help with that… maybe…

don’t rely on advertising, whether on TV, radio, buses or benches. Word of mouth from other clients of a lawyer is always a good thing.

I do a lot of real estate law, wills & trusts, estate planning, and probate, along with other areas that are, in some fashion, related to real estate. That is why our URL is PropertyLawGroup.com. My wife, Pat Anderson, whom I have for years called our “genuine, fire-breathing trial lawyer,” did civil litigation of many varieties, but Pat isn’t taking a lot of new cases these days. So, what do we do when a client needs a divorce lawyer, bankruptcy practitioner, criminal lawyer, or other service in a legal field we don’t personally do? Well, when you spend a lot of time in court, you see a lot of lawyers, talk to them in the halls, comparing notes on trends in the law and judges you both appear in front of. You see those lawyers when they’re up on their feet fighting for their clients. And you see for yourself who is truly talented at this law thing, and who is bumping into walls. At least, before the pandemic that was true. When asked for a recommendation to a lawyer or other service provider, we take that very seriously. If we refer you to a

30

MAY 2022 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

lawyer and that lawyer lets you down, we’ve let you down, and our reputation is diminished as a result. So, if we are asked to make a recommendation where we don’t really know any outstanding lawyers, we will tell you exactly what we do or don’t know about the field, perhaps providing three names of people who have been in the field a while, but letting you know we don’t really know their qualifications like we wish. You, of course, are always free to seek other opinions, and do your own “due diligence” on the internet before contacting someone and making a decision. Please, though,

There are also other advisers and counselors, such as the building trades, where we have a friend we have worked with for many years who is a general contractor, and has encyclopedic knowledge about building codes, zoning, and construction standards, in all of the communities of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. People like that are a pleasure to recommend, because I know the client will be glad to work with someone of that caliber and will end up thanking me. The people who you will find helpful in your moment of need are people who know what they’re talking about and will take the time to give you great service. In the end, it all comes down to thoughtfulness. ANDERSON & BRODERSEN, P.A., 350 Corey Avenue, St. Pete Beach, FL 33706 727-363-6100 • www.PropertyLawGroup.com

A Lifeline For Cash Strapped Small Businesses by Peter Roos

Most businesses suffered substantial economic losses during the pandemic. Government at all levels pitched in to help. The most help came from the Small Business Administration (SBA) in the form of loans, which were distributed through banks. Many business owners are still desperate for cash to cover rising costs for everything. While the SBA ‘PPP’ money is gone, help is available through a less known program called Employee Retention Tax Credits (“ERTC”). The ERTC is a part of the Cares Act legislation that made credits available to eligible businesses whose business took a hit, based on wages paid to their employees. Jake Welsh, owner of Payroll Vault St. Petersburg helps small companies with their payroll and has been finding many businesses that qualify don’t even know about the opportunity to get credits based on their payroll. They have to be applied for and will expire in 2023 (for 2020 credits) and 2024 (for 2021 credits), so procrastinators will lose out.

Payroll Vault is a boutique style full-service payroll provider founded in 2012 with over 70 offices around the U.S. Each Payroll Vault firm is locally owned and operated and provides unparallel client service to business owners and professional communities. Their internal payroll specialists help you stay informed about updates to tax deductions, year-end documentation, and compliance standards so you can focus on managing and building your business. Alongside payroll processing, they offer valuable workforce management solutions that include W-2 processing, tax filings, direct deposit, pay cards, and much more. Payroll Vault’s model is designed for small businesses that are likely to need the most support both daily and with obtaining the Employee Tax Retention Credit. These credits will be available for up to three years from the date a business was eligible. For example, if a business qualified for a credit in the third quarter of 2020, they would be able to apply for the credit through the 2023 tax year. Payroll Vault – St. Petersburg is happy to do a FREE assessment for eligibility. ERTC Eligibility Requirements 2020 ELIGIBILITY Eligible businesses are those that had 1-100 W-2 employees in 2020 with a 50% decrease in gross revenue compared to the same quarter in 2019, OR businesses that had a partial or full business closure due to federal, state or local order. The credit available for 2020 is 50% of wages up to

$10,000/employee for a maximum credit of $5,000/employee for the year. 2021 ELIGIBILITY Businesses that had less than 500 employees in 2021 and that had a partial or total business closure due to federal, state or local order, OR a more than 20% reduction in gross revenue compared to the same quarter in 2019. For 2021, the maximum credit is 70% of wages up to $10,000 for a maximum credit of $7,000/employee/quarter for the first three quarters of 2021 – so a total maximum credit of $21,000/employee in 2021. . Recovery Startup Business Eligibility Businesses which started after 2/15/2020 with annual revenues less than $1,000,000 qualify for credits even if they are ineligible under the government ordered shutdown or revenue reduction eligibility requirements. The maximum credit is 70% of wages up to $10,000 for a maximum credit of $7,000 per employee/quarter, capped at $50,000/ quarter for a Recovery Startup Business. Q3 and Q4 2021 are eligible. If you are interested in a local payroll agent who cares about your business, Payroll Vault – St. Petersburg is ready to help with your payroll and Employee Retention Tax Credit needs. HANGING AROUND

By Caron Schwartz

Producing Art News for Paradise NEWS has led me to some interesting places. And my love of coffee has led me to others. 2D Café combined both into one fantastic journey. My friend Mary and I needed to do some planning for an organization we belong to. Why not venture into that new cafe on Central Ave. in St. Pete? You cannot honestly say that the 2D Café stands out amid the other shops on the 2100 block of Central Ave. The sign is flat, just white letters outlined in black, nestled between the you-can’t-miss-’em signs for Wendy’s Closet and Speakeasy Kava. What draws you in are the doodles on the facade, the unmistakable cartooning of local muralist Chad Mize. Mary and I were enticed by the aromas of hot java and steaming baked goods wafting into the afternoon sunlight. Once inside it was hard to tell if the black and white decor was real or more of Mize’s imaginings. After ordering our cappuccinos (courtesy of Dancing Goats) and empanadas (made in-house by owner Maria Merello) we found an actual table and chairs, all white with black outlines, on which stood a black wire “vase.” Beyond my companion I saw a comfy fireplace alcove. Could one sit in the chairs and place drinks on the tables? Hard to tell until the optical illusion was broken when a couple did just that. The cafe’s motto is “be the art.” According to Merello, the drawings are meant to give visitors the feeling they are inside their own comic book. An hour of strong coffee and tasty empanadas later, plans were set in motion by we two comic book heroes.

Try to make vinegar your top choice for cleaning everything. It has the same cleaning strength as commercial cleaners, but none of the harsh chemicals that you are trying to avoid. With a pH of 2.0 and the acetic acid content, vinegar is an unfriendly environment for microorganisms, so it is a great cleaner for your home. Just think about how well it does at inhibiting bacteria and mold from growing in pickles. Studies have tested how effectively it kills bacteria and viruses. A 2010 study showed that a 10 percent malt vinegar solution was effective in killing the Human Influenza A/H1N1 virus. Other studies have found that vinegar is an effective mycobactericidal disinfectant.

PET HEALTH This can be extremely taxing on veterinarians and their teams alike. We go from one exam room where we may have had to euthanize one of our patients to the next with a smile. Our days are full of emotional ups and downs. We lose colleagues all too often in the veterinary field to suicide. The alarming fact is that female veterinarians are 2.4 times more likely to commit suicide than the general population and male veterinarians are almost 5 times that number. Why are we so prone to suicide? First, we are passionate about our patients. We see their entire lives from beginning to end, puppy and kitten-hood to their senior years. We are their doctors every step of the way: neonatal, pediatric, preventative medicine, diagnosticians, surgeons and even hospice and end of life. We bring them into the world and we help usher them into the next. And it is all to provide them with the best quality of life that we can.

Second, we are passionate about our clientele. We are here to help you provide a better life for your pet and do it in a way that is comfortable for you. We are here to guide and educate you but also provide care that is consistent with your lifestyle and the way you would like to raise your pets. We often become more than just trusted advisors and doctors but friends. We laugh together and cry together. We often become grief counselors. Lastly, we provide care for those that may not care for it. We treat patients that do not understand what we are doing to them, who are often fearful, and may try to harm us. Even while trying to provide the most soothing treatment method possible, we are likely to run into patents that just cannot be soothed and have to make medical decisions

By Dr. Johnathan Pierce in how best to treat them. Some pet owners have shown similar tendencies. We have been berated for simple fees to outcomes that may have not been as favorable as expected. This may be the most difficult part of our job. Some veterinarians have even been berated and bullied online by people who are not even their clients for events that had been misrepresented. We have been called names such as money-hungry, uncaring, and far worse things than I can describe here. We are very fortunate and thankful to be able to provide veterinary care in this wonderful community. Veterinarians and their teams have dedicated their lives to animals and to their pet-owning communities. Please be kind and compassionate to your veterinarians, and everyone around you. Jeannine & Vera Wilkins — photo by Brett Wilkins

Meet Jeannine from Mystical Silk! At home in Wisconsin, Jeannine was trapped in the corporate world. She hung in as the recession left many without jobs. A lover of song and dance, Jeannine always had an urge to create and share happiness. For Christmas 2009 her sister gave her a girl’s day out, including a silk scarf painting class! Jeannine fell in love with the mixing of colors, the brightness, and how happy it made her feel. A new adventure was born! She knew this was her medium to share brightness and happiness with as many people as she could. Her creations include silk scarves and wraps, eyeglass holders, bamboo headbands and caps, even printed cards and bookmarks. All pieces are lovingly painted freehand with a brush, and she uses a “Gutta Resist” for her drawing. Each piece takes about 3-5 days start to finish depending on the intricacy of the drawing. She has built wonderful relationships with so many market customers and is now also creating custom orders. Jeannine joined Tampa Bay Markets in 2017. You can find her Mystical Silk Fridays/Saturdays at the Dunedin Downtown Market and on Sundays on Corey Ave., 10am-2pm through May, 9am-1pm June-Sept. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2022

Celebrated worldwide, the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival (RPPF) launches its 10th Season The University of South Florida (USF) School of Music will host RPPF June 28 - July 18, 2022. Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival is supported entirely by private donations to Rebecca Penneys Friends of Piano, a non-profit 501c3 organization. The students are joined by 23 world-class faculty who work closely with them during the three-week festival. RPPF provides each participant with a semester’s worth of private lessons, nightly masterclasses, special topic classes, faculty presentations, performance opportunities, and abundant practice time on Steinway pianos. “Our goal is to offer each student – and the world of piano – a unique view of many different philosophies in teaching and performing styles,” said Penneys. In this 10th anniversary season, the tuition-free festival will bring together 39 of the world’s aspiring collegiate classical pianists from 17 countries who were selected from a very large applicant pool. This summer’s landmark season has as its theme, Legacy of Piano and Planet. Award-winning American composer Kenneth Frazelle will unveil a 5–7-minute work for solo piano composed and dedicated to RPPF “celebrating the legacy, enthusiasm, and imagination of its 10th anniversary season.” To further commemorate the 10th year, Rebecca Penneys Friends of Piano Inc. donated $1,000 to two non-profit organizations to further the health and legacy of our world: $1000 to One Tree Planted Inc. to plant 1,000 trees in North America to help with global reforestation efforts; $1,000 to United National Women’s League of America, Inc. to give humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. As part of her continuing personal mission to boost education and art in the Tampa Bay area, Rebecca, who is founder and director of RPPF as well as Professor Emerita of Piano at Eastman School of Music, created the Rebecca Penneys Graduate Collective at USF which guarantees five tuition-free graduate awards to five lucky students for their two-year Master of Music degree program. “Get Sirius About Your Future”

MAY ASTROLOGY May begins with a new lunar cycle and the Mercury Retrograde shadow in progress. This will be a good time to figure out what we are ready to revisit, redo or review. Love and money planet Venus visits dynamic Aries on the 2nd. Caution is suggested in matters of the heart and finances this month as impulsive actions are likely. Jupiter, the planet of fortune, success, and growth, visits Aries on the 10th until the end of October, then returns in December until May of 2023. It is Aries’ turn to be blessed with abundance, expansion, opportunities, and newfound freedom. But, some letting go is inevitable in order to move forward; any loss will be a blessing in disguise. Mercury stations REtrograde on the 10th so communication, transportation, and decision making will be slowing down. It is time to REview, REnew, and REvisit ongoing issues and projects but not time for anything new to begin. The next three weeks will give us time to clear up and clear out so that we can move forward next month with plans and projects. The Full Flower Moon in Scorpio on the 15th is a Lunar Eclipse. It brings things up and out into the open to be purged, transformed, and reborn. This eclipse has karmic energy with opportunities for restructuring our lives, and on a global level, bringing out matters that need extreme exposure and change. The Sun has been in stable, conservative Taurus all month but enters the sign of the twins, Gemini, on the 20th. Things come in twos now or with variety and we are restless, curious, and live in the moment. But, Mercury will move into Taurus on the 22nd keeping our thoughts cautious and more business-minded. We look for quality now in all things and a good bargain. Action planet Mars goes home to Aries on the 24th and gives us the courage and enthusiasm to accomplish almost anything 60

for the next few weeks. Love goddess Venus moves into faithful, stable Taurus on the 28th when sensuality and indulgence are enjoyed and celebrated. Then a New Moon in Gemini begins the next lunar cycle on the 30th challenging our dreams and ideals but giving us the practical ability to make them happen. TAURUS: Your new year starts now and many changes come with it. Review finances and find time for a private retreat. Relationships are in the spotlight. New talents are recognized that support careers and positions. GEMINI: Social activities are enjoyed with many opportunities for growth. You put energy into status, career. The focus falls on work and health matters. You reinvent yourself and start off on a new path as May closes. CANCER: Career and position are enhanced; fortunate options are coming. Creativity is accented; issues with children or love life surface now. Retreat into your private world; reimagine the new you moving forward with ease. LEO: Travel and education is enjoyable and brings new opportunities. The home and family concerns take stage mid-month. Reconnect with friends and reinvent your position. New social options may come with expenses. VIRGO: Resources and finances are enhanced and improved. Work with relationships for understanding. The spotlight falls on short trips, siblings, and conversations. New paths may open in your career; review and relearn. LIBRA: Relationships are enjoyable and mutually beneficial. Financial matters are in the spotlight; review options. Energy fills wellness and work areas. A new focus begins on education, philosophy, and travel later.

SCORPIO: Health and work are enhanced with new options. Energy goes into recreation. You are in the spotlight, reconnect to partners; find balance. As May ends a new focus on finances begins; speculation isn’t encouraged. SAGITTARIUS: Homelife and family are where the action is. Recreation is enjoyed. The spotlight falls on private affairs; the inner world. Review wellness plans. May ends with new beginnings and reconnecting in relationships. CAPRICORN: Energy is scattered in many directions. Home and family bring growth and pleasure. The spotlight falls on social time; future plans. Resume enjoyed routines to regain health. Work has new options later on. AQUARIUS: Short trips and conversations are enjoyed. Spiritual values influence assets. Your career or position is in the spotlight balanced with home and family. Reconnecting with children has new beginnings as May ends. PISCES: Income is enhanced with options for growth. You are energized and active. Education, travel, and beliefs are in the spotlight. ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones Many people will do anything to avoid dealing with, not only the pain, but the linear process of learning the lesson. We embody the lesson buried in the pain by remaining mindfully connected to the moment at hand and staying with the experience rather than running from it.

How Often Do You Repeat the Same Mistake? A learning experience is one of those things that says, “You know that thing you just did? Don’t do that.” ~ Douglas Adams Upon moving to Florida, I discovered we have an abundance of venomous snakes. This motivated me to take my dog MacDoodle, to a Snake Avoidance Class, where they used live venomous snakes to give the dogs a “learning experience” they, hopefully, did not soon forget. With the snakes safely and humanely muzzled, the handler placed an electric shock collar on Mac and then led him to the first snake. Mac moved as near as he could for an up-close and personal experience of what “snake” is. When he was within striking distance of the snake, the handler delivered a mild “buzzzz” electrical impulse to Mac’s collar. He immediately received a lesson etched directly in his puppy mind, which was that “Snake” equates to a certain degree of unpleasantness. It took two more “learning

experiences” with different snakes and he was a believer; the third time the trainer tried to bring him near a snake, Mac wanted nothing to do with it. This only happened because the trainer kept Mac present and engaged with the experience until he learned the lesson. How about you? Are you ever challenged to stay engaged with your “life-learning lessons?” Have you noticed there is a correlation between how many times you make the same mistake and the unpleasantness or pain you experience? The more pain involved, the fewer times you make the same mistake – or, at least in theory, that is how it is supposed to work. The problem with this theory is that, while it may work well for dogs wearing shock collars, humans seem more difficult to train. This theory doesn’t consider the pull of denial and instant gratification to which humans are so susceptible. Often we avoid, deny, or numb the pain rather than allowing it to be our teacher.

When we cannot lean into the moment and embrace the lesson that is being offered, we are signaling the universe saying, “Hey... I want more of the same.” As an example, many of us have gone from one disastrous relationship or unsatisfactory job to the next, and then the next, ad infinitum, never stopping long enough to explore the possibility that each failed experience has something to teach us. While the next person’s name and hair color may change, the “issues” don’t; while the next job may appear to have different coworkers, amazingly enough, the same “problem” people show up in different bodies. We can’t outrun our self-limiting behaviors and beliefs because they will follow us like our own shadow; however, we can transcend them by exposing them to the light of awareness. The practice is to pay attention to what is going on in the moment and learn what it has to teach you. While the unpleasant impulse of a shock collar stimulated Mac’s motivation to change his behavior, the learned response from the shock (in that moment) probably saved him from much worse pain and suffering in the future; that is called delayed gratification. What lesson is life trying to teach you today about repeatedly recreating the same unpleasant experiences? Odd as it seems, that is the purpose of pain – to get your attention. Hey, if a dog can learn the meaning of “You know that thing you just did? Don’t do that,” there is hope for you and me. The lesson from my master teacher Mac is that life doesn’t need to be so “ruff” – we only need to be present and teachable in the moment... and what better time to start than right now? Consider yourself buzzzzed.
