In November 2019, we welcomed seven breast cancer survivors and a team of professionals for a photoshoot and interview session. They shared with us how they make the most of each day.
Kuniko Ide
Ms. Kuniko Ide Q: What reinvigorates you? I like to walk my dogs. I wasnât exercising as much after I was diagnosed with breast cancer, but last year we welcomed two dogs into our family. I started walking them for two hours every day on weekdays, and I go for runs with them on weekends. This has helped me to live a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally. Nobody really talks to me if I walk by myself, but when I am with my dogs, people of all ages stop by to tell me how cute they are and that feels nice.
Q: What do you like about yourself? Iâm proud of my positive mindset and how it enables me to find opportunities during hardships. For example, when my hair fell out because of chemotherapy, I decided that I wanted to feel more beautiful than ever, so I enjoyed dressing up in different wigs and hats. Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? Considering my experience of participating in two beauty contests and making it into the finals, I would like to plan a beauty contest for breast cancer
survivors, and also act as the modelsâ walking coach. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? As a woman with Stage IV breast cancer, what helped me the most to get back to health physically, mentally, and emotionally were the encouragement and the smiles of my friends who had experienced the same illness. I will treasure these people for the rest of my life, and today I can even say that I am grateful for what I have gone through. I have received so much, and now I want

to give back and pass on that kindness and be there for the people who are suffering from their illness. I hope that through this project, I can share my experiences and spread happiness to people.
Ms. Ai Kitabayashi Q: What reinvigorates you? I like to exercise. I started yoga as part of my rehabilitation after first being diagnosed with breast cancer, and Iâve also taken up kickboxing. Exercising has been good for improving my circulation, and also helps my thought processes when I feel down, so I do my best to exercise regularly. Q: What do you like about yourself? I think that my illness taught me to have empathy for others, and it made me a kinder person.
Through friendships with other survivors who have gone through tough experiences, I have come to understand peopleâs pain. I also had to come to terms with my own weaknesses and arrogance, and realizing how much I have been supported by the people around me made me more compassionate. In many ways, I think my sickness taught me a lot. No one is perfect, and thatâs okay. I find myself learning to accept this with grace and I am growing from this experience. I like this about myself. Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? I think that many people who have been touched by breast cancer will agree that the experience can take away your confidence as a woman. It can lead you to give up on love or marriage. Iâve experienced this my-
self, but this year marks the 10th year since my operation, and I am finally ending my probation period. I want to take this as an opportunity to give love and marriage another chance, and I am excited to see what this new chapter will bring. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? For the past 10 years, I have been plagued with the fear of relapsing, but now that I can say that I am cancer-free, I would like to challenge myself to live life to the fullest. I heard about this project right when I was coming to this realization. I decided to participate, both as a gift for myself and in the hope that this would help me take my first step into a new stage of life.
Ms. Mika Shimokawa Q: Do you have any hobbies that you could do forever? I love doing nail art. I have my own full gel nail set at home, and I enjoy painting my nails for hours at a time when I have the chance.
Ai Kitabayashi
Q: What do you like about yourself? In the past, even when there was something that I was interested in, I would give in to thoughts that I couldnât do it, and that it was pointless to even try. But after being diagnosed with breast cancer and realizing that my time is limited, my attitude changed. I learned that it never hurts to try, and thatâs how I live now. I think thatâs something that I like about myself. Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? I believe that our daily lives are filled with new things that we can try. For instance, you can try something new at a restaurant, or take a different route on your way to work. Learning

to find and enjoy the little daily challenges will eventually lead to bigger opportunities. I would like to continue to enjoy finding little adventures every day. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? I have had some extremely tough times in my life, such as being diagnosed with breast cancer and going through a divorce, but I think that these experiences taught me that life is what you make of it, and that it is possible to find joy regardless of your circumstances. My hope is to encourage those who are in similar situations that they can too.
Ms. Jun Kuniyoshi
Mika Shimokawa
Q: Do you have any hobbies that you could do forever? I also do this professionally, but gardening is my favorite thing to do.
Jun Kuniyoshi
I enjoy the calming feeling of touching the soil. The word âhorticultureâ includes the word âto cultureâ and when I am tending to my gardens, I feel like I am also culturing my soul. Q: What do you like about yourself? My positivity. I am always having fun! Thatâs probably what I like most about myself. When I face difficulties, I always think positively, find a solution, and act on it. Even if I fail, I really enjoy trying things out. Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? In our society 60 years old is often considered to be a big year of change, but it will be 61 for me: 10-year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. Until then, I want to work hard at my job, and look forward to doing the things I enjoy afterwards. Iâve never been to Italy, and I would love to go.

and Iâm in charge of the household chores. Chores can be quite fun, and I can get really into them. When Iâm done itâs satisfying to see my house clean and my family happy. Q: What do you like about yourself? I like that I am always open to change, and the fact that I am mindful about staying positive.
Ayako Mizoguchi
I would like to visit Amalfi and see its lemons. There are so many places where I want to travel. I would also like to try studying again. If I can, I would like to go back to university. My first degree was in education, but this time, I would like to try nursing or therapy. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? I believe that fashion and beauty plays an important role for women. When we are diagnosed with breast cancer, we lose our breasts, we lose our hair⊠we lose so many things. For us to continue living positively, I believe that sharing this collective experience of

wearing beautiful kimonos and getting glammed up with other women, and appreciating ourselves and each other is so valuable. In a way, this kind of experience is a special privilege for women. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful project.
Ms. Ayako Mizoguchi Q: Do you have any hobbies that you could do forever? Itâs funny, but what I love doing is housework. I'm single so I have been living with my parents. Iâm currently taking care of my mother at home,
Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? There are a lot of challenges that I would like to take on, but looking after my parents is both the most challenging and also the most rewarding thing in my life right now. My mother is now under my care and I love to see her happy and smiling. I hope I can continue to help her daily so that she can live a longer, happier, and more enjoyable life. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? I love trying new things. Thatâs what really gets me excited. I love it when my heart races and I have butterflies in my stomach. I run a womenâs support group and our mission is to live life beautifully and to never be afraid of trying new things. When I learned about this project, I felt that the concept reflected our values as well. I also know what it feels like to discover a different part of yourself through the help of professionals. Iâm very grateful to have been given this opportunity, and I wanted to make the most of it.
Ms. Minako Tomobe Q: What reinvigorates yourself? I like to run. I have undergone surgeries almost every other year for the past several years, and it was hard to exercise during that time, so I started gaining weight. Now that I can, Iâve started running near my house. I for-
get about all difficulties when I work up a sweat. Q: What do you like about yourself? I am a very positive person by nature. I believe that no matter what happens, God has been making things better for me. My favorite saying is, âthereâs no problem you canât overcome.â Of course I worry at times, but soon enough I always find myself smiling.
Kaori Tsukuda
Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? Iâm currently trying many different things, and I think Iâve been reaching the goals that I have set for myself. I have been ill almost every 2 years, but I started running again so I would love to run and finish a race. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? I am the kind of person who is unafraid to follow my interests. I heard about this project from a friend,
thought, âWow, I would like to try that out!", and I signed myself up right away. It was instinctive. I would like to thank the beauty team for pampering me and making me feel beautiful.
Ms. Kaori Tsukuda

Q: What reinvigorates yourself? There is a type of dance called heel jazz. I like to take classes to re-energize myself. Itâs based on jazz dancing, but you wear heels to make it sexier and more feminine. Itâs really cool. Q: What do you like about yourself? Before I was diagnosed, I was not very conscious of my body. That has totally changed, and I am amazed at what it has been able to overcome. I am very thankful that my body has
been able endure the difficulties of undergoing chemo treatment. I love my body and I am very grateful for it. Q: What would you like to do to challenge yourself? I want to get better at heel jazz. Iâm still not as good as I want to be. I still get cold sweats when I dance, but it makes me want to practice even more and improve. Q: What made you want to participate in this project? My experience has taught me about the beauty of being alive and being unapologetically me. I do not want to hide behind my illness, and I want to show people that being sick does not change who I am. That is the reason why I wanted to participate in this project.

EXERCISE MADE EASY Getting active shouldnât be arduous. We look at some simple ways to incorporate exercise into your daily life.
W
hat is something that is good for your physical health, can help reduce side effects of cancer treatment such as fatigue and weight gain as well as improve your mood? The answer is: exercise. Starting out, or getting back into exercising, after breast cancer treatment can seem daunting. Even the word âexerciseâ might be off-putting. But you donât need a gym membership or any fancy equipment to start being more active. âYou might begin with some gentle stretching and breathing exercises to help you relieve any unwanted stress and tension,â says exercise expert Lizzy Davis, who works with women on Moving Forward courses. âIf you havenât exercised for some time, take it slowly. Build up and see

PiN K ⢠SPRIN G 2 0 2 0
how you feel each day.â National guidelines say we should all be doing 150 minutes or more of moderate aerobic activity like brisk walking (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity such as running) every week. However, the most important message to remember is: something is better than nothing. Even 10 minutes at a time to begin with will have benefits.
Which Activity? There are many ways to incorporate regular activity into your everyday life. Getting out for a walk is probably the easiest way to increase your activity levels. Swimming or aqua aerobics are also great for fitness, and water reduces stress on the bodyâs joints. You should also do some musclestrengthening activities â twice a week or more according to the guidelines.
Activities like yoga and pilates are good for muscle strength as well as flexibility. Balance, core and posture exercises are also a great way to strengthen our centre of gravity. âBe smart and safe by doing activities that are suitable for you and be sure to speak to your healthcare team before getting started,â says Lizzy. âYou might like to keep a diary to log and track your efforts and note changes to how you feel. âYou might feel pain, discomfort, stiffness, fatigue or weakness to begin with. Itâs important to stop an activity if you experience unusual pain.â
Three Exercises to try at home You donât need a gym to help you start building strength. Begin with a few repetitions, then slowly build up each day to do 10 to 15 of each.
1.Sit to stand This exercise can help strengthen your legs. Sitting on a chair with your feet on the floor hip width apart, slowly stand up straight, pushing through your heels, then gently lower yourself back to a sitting position. Focus on squeezing your leg and buttock muscles as you stand up and sit down. You can put your hands on the chair or your thighs to help push you up, or to make it a bit harder cross your arms across your chest.
⢠⢠â¢
2.Wall press-ups This is a great way to start to build up strength in the chest. Stand close to a wall, standing feet hip distance apart. Place your hands on the wall a little wider than your shoulders, with the tips of your fingers in line with the tops of your shoulders. Keeping the elbows wide, breathe in as you lower your body towards the wall. Then exhale as you push the wall away to come back up.
⢠â¢
3.Heel raise This exercise is great for improving balance as well as strength. You can hold on to the back of a chair for balance. Standing with your
â¢
feet hip distance apart, roll onto your toes and lift your heels high off the ground. Then slowly lower down. To make things a bit harder, trying doing it without holding onto the chair.
â¢
âExercise helped me to forwardâ Jackie Scully built up slowly from walking to running while going through treatment for breast cancer. âExercise got me out into the fresh air during treatment and became a vital part of my self-care routine. âWhen you are going through treatment, sometimes just the thought of exercise can make it hard to get started. âAfter a mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction surgery, I remember taking things slowly. I started walking on a small stretch of path. I would increase the amount of steps on this path every day. When I felt stronger, I walked further and started marking my progress by counting the number of lampposts I passed. âMaking exercise part of my daily routine helped me move forward and made sure I opened that front door every day, even when I didnât feel like getting out of bed. âBuilding up from walking to running to my first-ever race helped me take control of my body. I called it my life insurance policy.
âWhen I reflect back over treatment, I rarely think about the surgery or the chemotherapy. I think about just how far Iâve come. âThis year, I celebrate five years since my diagnosis. I feel happier and healthier than ever and I know that has a lot to do with exercise.â
Five tips for getting started 1 Start with short walks gentle stretching or deep breathing exercises
2 Find a friend to exercise with for added motivation
3 Use a walking app or pedometer to monitor your daily step count
4 Choose something you enjoy and that works with your lifestyle
5 Select a time in the day when your energy levels are higher

Mind matters -Looking after your mental wellbeingA diagnosis of breast cancer can be extremely stressful and lead to anxiety, but there are some things you can do to help take care of your mental health, as Rosie Bick explains.
A
lice-May Purkiss had experienced anxiety and depression for most of her adult life, but felt that she began to neglect her mental health after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. âWhile I was in treatment I buried my head in the sand when it came to looking after my brain,â says Alice. âI became much more concentrated on dealing with the cancer. I no longer had time to think about the things my brain was telling me because it was full up with cancer-related thoughts.
âYou go into survival mode.â Anxiety can be a common problem after a diagnosis of breast cancer. A 2018 survey by Breast Cancer Care and mental health charity Mind found that a third of women experienced anxiety for the first time in their life after their diagnosis and treatment. When hospital treatment finishes, some people struggle to adjust to their new situation. Dealing with ongoing side effects, going

for follow-up appointments or worrying about new aches and pains can all take their toll on your wellbeing. Self-help There are various self-help techniques that can help improve mental wellbeing. Regular exercise, particularly aerobic activity, is good for mental health. Physical activity is thought to cause chemical changes in the brain, which can help to positively change our mood. The important thing is to find an exercise you enjoy. For Alice, this was cold water swimming and yoga. If youâre not used to regular exercise, start off slowly by going for a short walk every day to give you some time
to yourself. Relaxation and mindfulness can also help. Mindfulness involves paying more attention to the present moment â to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you. There are also various free apps that may help you relax, sleep better and manage the symptoms of anxiety. Spot the trigger Recognising what triggers stress and anxiety is often an important step towards helping you cope. Keeping a diary can help you see how youâre feeling day to day and pinpoint triggers. Alice sought comfort by writing about her own mental health and breast cancer experience in her book Life, Lemons and Melons. âMy aim isnât to speak for anyone who has been through either cancer or experienced difficulties with their mental health,â she says, âbut to make sure anyone who ever finds themselves in either of these boats never feels like theyâre alone.â
When to seek help While self-help techniques can be a great way to help deal with negative emotions, itâs important to recognize
âIâve relied on various forms of counselling, CBT, and mindfulnessbased mental health support programmes to help keep me on the right trackâ
when you may need further support . As Alice explains, âWe all have bad days and off days, but it becomes problematic when it starts impacting your life, relationships or work. If youâve had a period of low mood or anxiety for two weeks or more, thatâs when you should chat to your GP, breast care nurse or mental health charities. Alice had been having cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a form of talking therapy commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, before her diagnosis,
and resumed these sessions after treatment. CBT focuses on changing the way we think and behave, and teaches coping skills for dealing with different problems. Alice discovered that a combination of techniques helped her once treatment ended. âIâve relied on various forms of counselling, CBT, and mindfulness-based mental health support programmes to help keep me on the right track,â she says. If you think you might benefit from talking therapies, ask your GP or breast care nurse about how to access them.

âCancer motivated me to change my lifeâ Three people tell us about the changes they made after their breast cancer diagnosis, and how this helped them move forward.
I wanted to see the world When I was diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer in July 2012, I was in the grip of fear and uncertainty that I imagine all people diagnosed with cancer experience. At my local support centre I met a lovely woman who told me that, apart from her children, breast cancer was the best thing that happened to her. When I left the hospital that day, I felt the fog of despair lifting. I was determined to turn breast cancer into a positive experience for myself, too. During my sick leave I realised how stressed Iâd been at work, so I returned part time. I began thinking about travelling, and in 2014 when my daughter did

an exchange at a university in Sydney, I went to visit her. I was enthralled and determined to go back. In the meantime, stressful changes at work gave me the impetus to resign. I spent time in Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. I travelled around Southeast Asia for a month. I had developed a lifestyle that suited me, so I saved money and flew back to Australia â twice! Iâm grateful to breast cancer. It has motivated me to change my life around completely. I am a happier, more confident, less anxious and less stressed person. If I were only to live for five more years, would I want to spend them worrying about the cancer returning and regretting things Iâd not done?
I want to see the world, feel a sense of achievement and have a head full of happy memories. -Sarah W
I finally met my soulmate I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in December 2014, and finished active treatment in August 2015. In my relationship I was always the organised one. When I was diagnosed, I really wanted my partner to step up and help with simple things like housework and shopping. But he expected things to carry on as they were, and for me to mother him as normal. Towards the end of treatment, he would say hurtful things, particularly

around the lack of intimacy in our relationship when sometimes I felt so ill all I wanted to do was sleep. I felt very let down and that he only cared about his own needs, so I ended our relationship of eight years. I am a big believer in things happening for a reason, and breast cancer certainly enabled me to do lots of thinking. I am in a good place now, and after trying the dating scene for a few months I finally met my soulmate, Paul. Positive things can come out of difficult situations, and life is for living. If you or your partner are finding things difficult, try to talk things through. Itâs often easy to stick with the people weâre used to, but going through a life-altering experience can change that.
Ask what you want your new life to look like, and donât waste time. Most importantly, do what makes you happy. -Claire I didnât want to go back to my stressful job In 2014 I was diagnosed with DCIS. The same year I was told I had a plastic anaemia, which made my treatment pretty complicated. I had to build myself back up physically and emotionally. Before my diagnosis I worked in a job that was really stressful and a lot of responsibility. I didn't want to go back to anything like that again. I had to come first in order to stay well and be a good mum to my six-year-old daughter.
With support from my boyfriend, I worked part time and freelance to transition back into work while allowing time to rest, spend time with my daughter and attend follow-up appointments. I was very keen to not be the âwoman who had cancerâ. I work in the charity industry and always loved the face-to-face, frontline work, but now Iâve chosen to be officebased so I can enjoy my job while allowing for flexibility, family and the freedom to prioritise my health. I'm now happier to talk to people at work about my cancer and aplastic anaemia, even supporting others whose lives have been affected by cancer. It's important to remember that you have experienced serious trauma, and it's difficult going back to life before that. This life is whatâs important â the ânew normalâ. You can make changes if you want and youâre allowed to still be affected by cancer even five, 10 or 30 years after treatment â you don't have to âget over itâ. Jobs are jobs, but the health and wellbeing of me and my family is my number one priority, now and for the future. -Sarah M

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Breast Cancer Careâs experts answer your questions about breast cancer and its treatments
Did night shifts cause my cancer?
Q
Your specialist team can tell you if abemaciclib is an option in your situation.
A
Am I eligible for abemaciclib?
I was diagnosed with breast cancer last month. I worked night shifts for many years and read online that this could cause breast cancer. Is this right? For many years it was suggested that night shift work may increase the risk of breast cancer. But a recent analysis from the Breast Cancer Now Generations Study, which looked at night shift work and breast cancer risk in the UK, found no clear evidence that working pattern increases a womanâs chance of developing the disease. This means that women who work during the night are no more likely to develop breast cancer than those who do not. Breast cancer is a complex disease and itâs impossible to identify a single cause. We donât fully understand why some people get breast cancer and some donât. Research suggests that breast cancer is caused by lots of different factors, but many of these are out of our control. The three main risk factors for developing breast cancer are being a woman, getting older, and for some having a significant family history of the disease.

Q
I have secondary breast cancer in the lung, and have heard about a drug called abemaciclib. Can I have this?
A
Abemaciclib is a targeted therapy used to treat secondary breast cancer. It belongs to a group of drugs known as CDK 4/6 inhibitors. Other drugs in the same group are palbococlib and ribociclib. These drugs can be given to people who have secondary breast cancer that that is both oestrogen receptor positive (ER+) and HER2 negative. Abemaciclib has been approved for use on the NHS and can be given as the first treatment for secondary breast cancer alongside an aromatase inhibitor, such as letrozole. It can also be given in combination with a drug called fulvestrant if you have had hormone therapy for secondary breast cancer in the past. Your specialist team can tell you if abemaciclib is an option in your situation.
How can I feel better about myself?
Bisphosphonates can slow down or prevent bone damage.
Q
Iâve just finished my treatment. Can you suggest something that might help me feel better about the way I look and feel about myself?
A
Breast cancer and its treatments can cause changes to your body, the way you look, and how you feel about yourself. Some changes may be temporary others more long-term. Research suggests the sooner you confront the physical changes to your body, the easier you may find it to gain confidence in the way you look. However, this isnât always easy. Talking openly about how you feel can help. It can take time to get used to the way you look and to adjust to life after hospital treatment. Looking after your mind as well as your body is important to help you regain self-esteem and confidence.
Research suggests the sooner you confront the physical changes to your body, the easier you may find it to gain confidence in the way you look.
Why have I been offered a drug called sodium clodronate?
Q
Iâve been prescribed a drug called sodium clodronate, in addition to aletrozole, as a part of my treatment. Why would I need to take this?
A
Sodium clodronate belongs to a group of drugs called bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates can slow down or prevent bone damage. Some treatments for breast cancer can increase your risk of getting osteoporosis and your bone breaking. Bisphosphonates reduce this risk. Research has also shown bisphosphonates may help reduce the risk of breast cancer spreading to the bones and elsewhere in the body in post- menopausal women being treated for primary breast cancer. National guidelines now recommend that sodium clodronate, or another drug called zoledronic acid, are offered alongside other treatments to postmenopausal women woman have invasive breast cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes under the arm. They may also be considered for invasive breast cancer that has not spread to the lymph nodes. Sodium clodronate is a tablet that is taken once a day, and youâll usually be advised to take it for two or three years.
