Donât wait until the end before being reborn âIt's just a test.â
M
y breast cancer was not found during a regular checkup. Since my early 20s, I had something âsmall and round" in my left breast. At that time, awareness of breast cancer screening was not very high, but I took the initiative and regularly went for screenings. I remember the feeling of relief after every screening when I was told, "It's benign. There is no need to worry.â

During a period of time when I was not able to go for screenings, and I felt as if the small round lump in my breast had grown bigger. I visited the hospital again to get it examined and I was told that this time, a detailed testing was necessary. I went through a series of tests, but for some reason, it was difficult to decipher whether the lump was benign or malignant. The doctor in charge
seemed unsatisfied and recommended that I be admitted to the hospital for testing. He said, "Let's take out a small piece of tissue for further testing. This will require general anesthesia and you will have to stay in the hospital for one night. It will also deform the breast a little bit.â I was perplexed. âGeneral anesthesia and hospitalization, and breast deformity just for testing?â I was unable to understand and repeatedly asked whether this was a surgery to remove the tissue rather than just a test, but the doctor insisted that this was âjust a test.â When I asked for an explanation, he sounded as if I had no other option other than this test. I was hesitant about letting my breast become deformed just for this, and the gap between us only grew larger.
Eventually, I decided that I could not trust the doctorâs decision and stopped going to the hospital. Even now, I do not know if this was the right choice. Cancer after all Then came a difficult time in my personal life. I discovered that my thenhusband was unfaithful and I fell into a state of mental and physical exhaustion. Overwhelmed by grief and suffering, I could not think about the future, let alone worry about my health. However, as the divorce settlement progressed, I began to see the light at the end of the tunnel and became more positive about regaining my health and starting a new life. That was when I decided to have the long-postponed appointment at the breast clinic. Coincidentally, I was examined by my previous doctor, and as I entered the examination room to get my results, I could tell from his expression that the results were not good. With a grim expression on his face, the doctor gave me the diagnosis: âYou have cancer.â Rather than being shocked, what I felt was more a sense of âI knew itâ. The nurse in the examination room seemed more upset than I was. The doctor explained that I had Stage 1 invasive cancer, that the surgery would be either a total or partial mastectomy, and that if we were to do a partial mastectomy, radiation therapy would be necessary. He also mentioned that I would need anticancer drug treatment because the cancer was severe in appearance. When I told him that I was concerned about my breast being deformed by the surgery, he pulled a face as if to say, âThis is a life-threatening issue and you are concerned about how your breast looks?â At that moment I knew I would never reach an understanding with this doctor and made a final decision not to do the surgery with him. I then set out to look for another hospital where I could undergo a surgery.
Growing impatient My parents were already worried about me because of the divorce, so it was very hard for me to tell them that I had cancer. However, I knew that I could not hide such an important matter, so I tried to stick to the facts and be objective and simple as possible. My parents were shocked and upset, but my elder sister calmed them down by saying that it was not good to worry too much. She also understood how I felt and encouraged me by telling me to choose the treatment that I wanted and not to worry about how much it would cost. From then on, I spent a lot of time reading standard treatment guidelines in the library and researching breast cancer cases on the internet. I tried to make appointments at hospitals that seemed to fit my expectations, but many of these hospitals were unable to offer an appointment until several months later. There were some hospitals where I could see a doctor right away but a surgery would not be available for another six months. The search for a suitable hospital proved to be more difficult than I had imagined, and I grew impatient and worried. I finally came across the website of a clinic describing a beautiful reconstruction case, where I learned about the "subcutaneous mastectomy + simultaneous reconstruction" method. This was exactly the kind of surgery I was looking for. I called the clinic without much by way of expectation, but there was an opening available
a few days later. I took a day off from work and made an appointment for an examination. The doctor in charge explained that in my case it was possible to perform subcutaneous mastectomy together with simultaneous reconstruction, and that it would only require one night of hospitalization. He also assured me that the surgery could be done within three weeks, so I made an appointment right away. The tests that decided treatment I still vividly remember the moment I laid down on the operating table. I did not shed a tear when I got my cancer diagnosis, but when my doctor told me that the operation was going to start, I realised that the long-awaited surgery was finally here. All the emotions I kept inside burnt loose, and I could not stop crying. The surgery was a success. The cancer diagnosis remained unchanged, but since there was no metastasis to the lymph nodes. I was asked to decide whether I wanted to undergo chemotherapy. Because I did not know enough to make this decision on my own, I took the Oncotype DX test, which was not covered by insurance at the time. I discovered that, in my case, the survival rate would not change whether I had chemotherapy or not. I decided not to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment since I had already had a full mastectomy. I decided to receive hormone therapy because my cancer

was highly hormonally receptive. At my sister's suggestion, I also took a test for hereditary breast cancer, which came back negative. Wanting to start a family After the surgery and the divorce settlement were over, I decided that I wanted to take up a new hobby, and started going to a golf school, where I met my current husband. Shortly after we got to know each other, I had no hesitation in telling him that I was undergoing cancer treatment, but when we started to talk about marriage, it took courage to tell him that I could not have a baby, because a pregnancy would increase the risk of relapsing. However, as we talked about our future together, we realized that although we shared the desire to raise children and start a family together, we were not concerned whether or not they were our own biological children. Perhaps because we knew lots of families of various structures, we decided against fertility treatment. Because my husband is an architectural designer who has been involved in designing foster homes, we knew that there were many children who could not be raised by their birth families, which naturally led us to the choice of plenary adoption. However, this journey was not smooth. Becoming an adoptive mother There are two main ways to become adoptive parents through plenary

adoption: one is to register with the municipal government as adoptive foster parents and wait for a referral from a childrenâs welfare center, or to register with a private placement agency. Soon after getting married, we took an adoption foster care course and started looking for a private placement agency. However, each private placement agency had its own strict criteria for screening adoptive parents, which became a major hurdle for us. There were a number of agencies whose requirements for adoptive parents we did not meet. For example, they forbade both parents from working at the same time (meaning the mother must be committed to childcare), the parents had to be undergoing infertility treatment, and there were age restrictions. Eventually, we applied to an agency whose application requirements we met and policies we agreed with, and things seemed to go smoothly. However, when we were one step away from getting registered, we were rejected because we were not married long enough. If we waited until we met the required number of years, however, we would breach their age limit. We had no other options, so we continued to negotiate with the agency to see if there was anything else we could do. I was aware that we were asking for a lot, and the agencyâs staff member on the other side of the phone sounded troubled. However, I also knew that if we gave up, we would lose any chance of ever having a child. We continued to plead, until an agency representative
came on the call and said, âIâm sorry to say that we cannot register you with our agency, but I know someone who recently started a placement agency with a wonderful policy.â He kindly offered to refer them to us. We immediately contacted the representative of the agency. After explaining our situation, they agreed to meet with us for an interview. The interview turned out to be pleasant throughout. They did not judge us based on our age, income, or years of marriage, and instead, focused on who we are and listened to what we had to say. Finally, we were accepted for registration with this agency and later were fortunate enough to be entrusted with a boy, and then a girl one year after that. We have raised them since they were babies, and our children are now five and four years old. From the outside, we look like your normal, everyday parents and children. Little joys I do not consider myself to be particularly good with children I never even knew how to communicate even with my relativesâ kids, so when a newborn suddenly arrives at your house, things can become a little chaotic. However, everyday with my children was full of little joys, so I did not feel the least bit uncomfortable. At my children's nursery school, the nursery teachers and parents use a correspondence notebook to keep in touch. I thought it would be fun for the nursery teachers if I drew cartoons to share updates rather than writing long sentences, so I half-jokingly turned my notebook into a comic. Pictures make it easier to recall events when looking back at the pages, and more importantly, this has created an unexpected pleasant by-product, as it became part of our daily routine as a couple to discuss interesting things our children said during the day and find things to draw into a cartoon.
When it comes to household chores and childcare, our goal is to ensure that we take an equal share of the work, though as we prefer certain chores over the others, we take turns in doing things. Because my husband is good at houseworks, even cooking and sewing, I feel comfortable entrusting him with the children. Recently, I have had more time for myself in the evenings now and then. It is a trial and error, but I am grateful that my husband and I are able to talk things through together and work out a way forward. Although plenary adoption is a system designed for the welfare of children, I would like to see it become a more well-known option for people who cannot have children because of various reasons, such as illnesses like breast cancer. I hope that we can set a good example by raising our children as best as we can, and that they become responsible adults who make contributions to society. Cherishing every day Nine years have passed since my surgery, and I have two years left of hormone therapy with tamoxifen. Looking back, a lot of things have happened, and there surely will be challenges awaiting us in the future. Still, I believe
that no matter what happens, I will find my way through. In the past, I used to be a cautious and passive person, reluctant to take up new things and always looking for reasons that things were impossible. However, after being diagnosed with breast cancer and realizing that our time here is limited, I have become more willing to try things out and see where they will take me. It is embarrassing to admit that when I was living a carefree life alone, I felt as if everyday was the same and I would procrastinate. Now, my perspective has changed completely. I believe that you can and should do whatever you can as soon as you can. Share your interests with the people around you, because when you do, good things often happen unexpectedly. There are times when I slip back to the old self-indulgent me, but every time I hear the good results of my annual checkup, my resolution kicks back in. I am thankful to be healthy and I feel that I have been given a second chance at life. I strongly believe that I need to cherish each day. Now, I am always looking out for opportunities for adventures in my daily life. To me, adventure is not only about exploring the desert or the jungle: it can be an accumulation of small events in life that might seem insignificant, such as taking a different route from
the train station to home, trying a new dish at lunch, or accepting an offer that I would have turned down before. I had to let go of certain things when I found out that I had breast cancer, but on the other hand, I also gained other things. I cannot count the people whom I would never have met and the many amazing opportunities that I never would have had otherwise, and my outlook on life has changed. Learning that I had breast cancer will always remain an undeniably shocking experience, but it turned into an opportunity to transform myself. It is often said that every obstacle is an opportunity. Every time I found obstacles standing in my way, I have thought carefully about them, consulted people I could trust, and overcame them one at a time, and this led to me becoming the person I am today. I have walked down many dimly lit paths and narrow winding roads, sometimes feeling like being thrown back to the starting point of a sugoroku game, but I have persevered with grit and kept on walking. It has been a somewhat unusual journey, and there are bound to be roads ahead that will not be easy. However, my experiences have enabled me to appreciate the different sceneries of life, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds. The adventure is not over yet.

Q: What is most satisfying about your job? Daniel Photographs have the power to convey emotions, moods, stories, ideas and messages. As a photographer, the greatest satisfaction comes when the right elements including the environment, lighting, and composition come together to create the perfect photograph. Everyone has a story to tell. When these stories are combined with technique, photographs are able to leave a lasting impact on whoever sees it. I always strive to take such photographs.

Mahiro Hair and makeup is an interesting profession, because it is not necessarily a basic essential in our lives. I feel fortunate to be able to work in this field. I love taking inspiration from my daily life and allowing it to take shape in my work. The canvas of a hair and makeup artist is the human face. Each personâs skin temperature and texture differs, and each individual has their own unique personality and energy. You discover all these things when you meet them. I enjoy this, because I am able to stretch my imagination based on the inspiration and feelings I experience at that moment. It is different from painting on paper.

Nao I created my headwear brand âN HEAD WEARâ so that I could touch peopleâs lives in my own way. When people say things like âI wanted something like thisâ, âPeople complimented me when I was wearing your hat,â or âI feel like going out nowâ, it makes me genuinely happy and glad that I am doing what I do. I am grateful to have been given this opportunity to style these women because I was able to directly encounter the beauty and charm of each one of them. Q: What kind of expectations did you have when you participated in this project? Daniel I wanted to participate in this project, because I identify with the mission of RFTC Japan. I wanted to bring life to this wonderful vision through the photographs that I take. There is nothing I enjoy more than working together with people who are creative and passionate in order to achieve a common goal. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to contribute to this project with these amazing people. Jane It is beautiful to see these cancer survivors proactively taking on challenges with such a positive attitude, and I respect them. When I participated in this
project, I looked forward to witnessing how they would express and portray themselves in their own life-affirming way. Mahiro One of my current clients is an actress who is involved in various charity works, and after learning from her, and from my personal experiences with my family, I have always wanted to contribute what I could to fight issues regarding illness and poverty. For this project, I wanted to help these models maximize the beauty that they have and feel even more positive. Nao My goal is to help people live their daily lives in comfort so they can enjoy themselves in a variety of situations, so styling my hats from my brand âN HEAD WEARâ and kimono was something that I have always wanted to do. I hoped that people would be able to take inspiration from this and incorpo-

rate my styles into their fashion. This was my first time doing the styling for a project like this, so finding new inspiration and new opportunities for expression was a good challenge for me.
Q: What was it like on the day of the project?
Sora I was excited to shoot a project in a setting with professionals from all kinds of different fields, and to meet everyone in person. I work in a production com-

opener. The people involved were very professional and lively, and I personally felt the responsibility to convey the stories of these seven amazing ladies who went through multiple challenges and came up on top. I am proud to be part of this project. Jane The day was also about the models having a total beauty experience through traditional kimono culture. We chose the kimonos, and had the fittings done together, followed by a photoshoot session in our school studio. I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Mahiro The scene was slightly different from my usual work, so a part of me was a little nervous in the beginning, but we soon connected with each other in a natural way. My first impression of the models was of how strong and wonderful

In my usual line of work, I think I was more focused on realising my own visions, and it was not necessarily about helping people. However, on that day, I feel that I was able to play a part in helping these ladies feel and look beautiful, and it made me happy. It was a day where I felt a powerful human connection.
Nao Because there are many different elements to this project such as the models, kimono, makeup, hairdo, photograph, and video, there many things that you can̢۪t prepare for until the day itself, and some things you only discover in the moment itself. It was a great experience because we were working
together as a team to create a piece of expression. The team was so reliable and I was able to immerse myself in that moment. Sora I am glad that I was able to carry out my work effectively, and I really enjoyed working together with the team while having fun together. There were moments that left big impressions on me that day. The first was when the models emerged from their dressing room in their kimonos, and the other time was when I was filming the scene of the portrait shoot. They were breathtaking, and knowing that they have experienced so much made it even more meaningful.
Q: What kind of difference do you want to make?
Getting involved in this project gave me the opportunity to do that. I have an elder sister who has Down Syndrome so I have always felt passionately about people with unique characters, and their family members not feeling out of place, and having the confidence to live their lives unapologetically being themselves. What I would like to try in the future is to take beautiful family portraits for these individuals and their families, and I could do their makeup and styling. I want to do this as a passion project in addition to my usual job. Nao Change is a certainty, and we all have insecurities to contend with, but life goes on. My hope is to continue finding creative ways to love who we are in the present, and share my discoveries
and experiences with as many people as I can. In the future, I would love to create a space where people have the opportunity to share their feelings in a natural setting. What I loved the most during the project was seeing everyone chatting with each other and having fun taking photos with each other in between shoots. Everyone was glowing and it was a beautiful sight. This experience gave me a sense about what I want to do in the future. Sora I hope to continue making videos that will be seen by many. Movies and videos have helped me to think, learn, and be inspired. I hope that the films I create can inspire others and help people find the potential in themselves.
Daniel What I like most about this work is the feeling that I have made a difference is when I am involved in a project where we can tell peopleâs unique stories. In this project in particular, I wanted to showcase the different aspects of each model. I wanted to take lively photographs with bold colors as well as praise these inspirational women by producing really positive photographs. Jane I believe that In life, it is very important to shine by being yourself. YAMANO advocates a lifestyle called âBi-dou (Way of Beauty)â that incorporates five different elements of beauty: hair, face, fashion, mental health, and physical health. Through âBi-douâ and a lot of smiles, I hope that we can live a beautiful lifestyle of our own. Mahiro I think that up until now, my focus has been to do a good job at accomplishing whatever tasks I have been given, so I donât think I took much time to really think about the work I have done.

Sex and Intimacy âLetâs Talkâ Talking about sex isnât always easy. But it could be the key to a fulfilling sexual relationship after a cancer diagnosis, as Kate Parsons explains.
12
P iNK ⢠SUMME R 20 2 0
I
t's no surprise that being diagnosed with breast cancer is likely to affect how you feel about sex and intimacy. Changes to how your body looks can affect your confidence and how you feel about yourself as a woman. And side effects from treatment, such as pain, discomfort or loss of sensitivity, can add to your lack of confidence. But while things may be different than before, if you and your partner can communicate supportively, thereâs no reason why your sexual relationship shouldnât be satisfying and fulfilling for you both. Building Intimacy Itâs normal to feel anxious about your first sexual experience after your diagnosis. If you have a partner, it's likely that they'll be anxious too. It can help you both relax to talk honestly about how you're both feeling, and discuss exactly what kinds of activity you're comfortable with. Itâs not always easy to talk about sex. It might help to talk somewhere away from the bedroom, where you both feel comfortable. âCancer can mean that a couple may have withdrawn from each other emotionally to protect themselves,â says Dr. Rachel Davies, Senior Practice Consultant at Relate. âSpend time together doing enjoyable things, relax together, remember how to laugh together and be interested in each otherâs worlds. Nurturing your emotional relationship will build intimacy.â Sharing Thoughts If you were in a relationship before your diagnosis, you may worry that your partner will compare things to how they were. How your partner responds to you sexually may be influenced to a degree by how they reacted to your breast cancer.
Some partners might not mention or initiate sex for fear of upsetting you. While it may be difficult at first, try talking to your partner about how you feel. This might encourage them to share their own thoughts and concerns. You may find youâre making assumptions about how the other feels without realizing it. âSome couples find revisiting the ways they've had sexual and sensual contact with each other from early in their relationship can be helpful when full sex feels too much,â says Rachel. âThis can be a great time for exploration and can even revitalize your sexual feelings.â Cancer and its treatments can cause a relationship to become strained. Some people find that going through a traumatic experience together brings them closer, but for others it highlights or worsens underlying problems in their relationship. These changes may be difficult to talk about and it may take time to resolve them. However, some people cannot come to terms with their partnerâs breast cancer and may emotionally push them away or even reject them, temporarily or permanently. Feeling Ready If youâre not in a relationship right now, the thought of forming a new one in future might seem daunting. Beginning a sexual relationship may bring on feelings of anxiety about how and when to tell someone youâve had treatment for breast cancer. The important thing is to discuss your diagnosis only when you feel ready and comfortable enough. âRemember, you are in control of this information,â says Rachel. âItâs personal and private to you and you decide how much you want to say and when.â When you feel the time is right to tell your new partner, they may be shocked at first and take a little time to adjust

to this news. They may have their own anxieties and fears around cancer and what it means to them. But a new partner may be very accepting and recognize that your experience is now part of who you are. âDonât presume it will affect them in the same way as you.â Says Rachel. âThey are obviously attracted to you and want to be sexual with you, and they may not see any problems.â

um-of-two Carol, 54, noticed a change to her breast on the day of her breast screening appointment. âI took my bra off and in the changing room and could see there was dimpling,â she says. âI got a bit of a shock and pointed it out to the radiographer.â A couple of weeks later, Carol found herself sitting in front of a doctor who was pointing to an area of concern on a scan. A few years earlier, Carol had developed a harmless cyst in the same area and assumed this would be the same thing. But it wasnât. âThe doctor said: âItâs unlikely to be anything other than cancer,ââ says Carol. âMy first thought was: Right then what are we going to do about it? I didnât break down in tears. It was always a case of: Whatâs next? What do I do?â Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer on 23 April 2018. âI felt I was in a much better position the day of my diagnosis than the day

before,â she says. âAlthough it was a shock to hear, I was now in a position to do something about it.â Little Goals Carol says she approached treatment by breaking it down into âdoable chunksâ. âI didnât focus on the end of the treatment,â she says. âI like to set myself little goals every day, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when Iâve achieved them. I looked at treatment in the same way.â Carol, who was treated in her home town of Glasgow, says the care she received was âtremendousâ. Surgery involved removing two tumors from her left breast, then reshaping the remaining breast tissue and reducing the right breast to match. This was followed by six cycles of chemotherapy. âChemo was hard, but not as awful as I expected,â she says. Then, before starting radiotherapy, Carol used Breast Cancer Nowâs Someone Like Me service to speak to someone who had the same treatment.
âI spoke to a phenomenal lady. We had four or five conversations and she was absolutely brilliant. She gave me a few pointers. It was exactly what I needed at the time. I came off the phone feeling really boosted.â
âI feel like Iâve been repaired... and that my experience has enhanced me.â Repaired Carol felt âalmost elatedâ when hospital treatment ended in December 2018. Sheâs now taking the hormone drug tamoxifen and apart from hot flushes and occasional insomnia, is feeling well. âI look after myself and I listen to my body,â she says. âItâs hard to avoid the subject of cancer, but I refused to give it too much of my focus. I just want to get on with enjoying my life.â
Carol says sheâs getting used to the inevitable changes that follow months of treatment. âI do look in the mirror and get a bit of a shock,â she says. âI think: âWho is that looking back at me?â But Iâm getting to know the new me, and I am happy with myself.â Carol, who has spent time living in Japan, likens her experience to kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery using lacquer mixed with powdered gold. Rather than attempting to disguise the damage,
the repaired object is enhanced by the visible golden âscarsâ. âI feel like Iâve been repaired,â she says, âand that my experience has enhanced me.â Perspective This year Carol was chosen as the Peopleâs Postcode Lottery model and the Breast Cancer Now Scottish fashion show. âI was nominated by a friend and couldnât believe I was chosen,â she says. âIâm honored to be a
Peopleâs Postcode Lottery ambassador. My family and friends are coming, and I want to show them how far Iâve come and what theyâve contributed to my wellbeing.â Carol has also held a fundraising Afternoon Tea and next year is planning something more intrepid: a zip wire across the River Clyde. âIâm afraid of heights!â she says. However, she feels breast cancer has put her fears into perspective, âHaving cancer in your body is as scary as scary gets,â she says. Carol is grateful both for the healthcare she received and the support from family, friends, and Breast Cancer Now. âThe NHS put me back together physically,â she says. âBut having Breast Cancer Now, family and friends does help you get all your bases covered. You are not alone. The help is there, you just need to use it.â

Perhaps itâs because I had a partial mastectomy and simultaneous reconstructive surgery during the winter, whenever I got cold, the side of my chest that underwent surgery would hurt. I carried around a rechargeable heat pad wrapped in a child-sized glove, and I switched it on to warm my chest whenever I started feeling cold.
