Like birds flying south for the winter, it is almost as if we are programmed to bring order back into our lives after Labour Day passes. We fondly wave goodbye to summer even though it is not quite over. The month of September draws out our nesting instinct as we prepare for the cooler days ahead and all of the wonderful things that autumn brings. Many children return to school and familiar routines, while little ones begin their journey as they enter preschool and kindergarten and the newly graduated settle into the work force for the first time. September is a time for us to buy fall clothes, to register for classes, to take on new challenges. But don’t pack away your sunscreen too quickly; Kerrisdale is not ready to stop celebrating summer! The biggest event of the summer, Kerrisdale Days, used to be held in late August, however

At last the KBA, in conjunction with the Kerrisdale Community Centre and Provident Security, will offer a free outdoor movie at Elm Park September 7th, and not just any movie; a timely classic from three decades ago.
TD Canada Trust has enthusiastically decided to support the outdoor movie by donating free popcorn. Movie goers are reminded to use garbage cans provided for all litter as we intend to leave the park spic and span!
Terri Clark, the Coordinator for the Village of Kerrisdale Business Improvement Association, is the now retired Park Board staffer who brought back outdoor movies to Stanley Park’s Ceperley Meadow in 2001. For Kerrisdale she needed to find a theme that resonated with all families. Finding a movie that would not be too loud for surrounding residences or violent for children and queasy adults is not an easy task but Universal Studios came to the rescue.

Terri contacted the publicity office who agreed that a film like E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial would fit the bill perfectly. It turns out it is the thirtieth anniversary of this classic pic too. Not only that, Universal Pictures is celebrating its Centennial so they threw in a few trailers of their upcoming blockbusters like the planned December 2012 release of Les Miserables starring Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. The outdoor movie will be preceded by a Community Celebration mounted by Kerrisdale Community Centre starting at 6pm with games, entertainment and lots of prizes. All movie related activities that evening will be kept in order by Provident Security team members who are sponsoring the event by donating their excellent services.
Kerrisdale Idol and Community Coffee Clutch Saturday September 8th Celebrate Kerrisdale Days rolls into high
gear on Saturday September 8 featuring the first ever Community Coffee Clutch from 9-10am. Moore’s muffins and free coffee will be shared while supplies last allowing all shoppers and business owners a calming few minutes to enjoy a “cuppa” before the days entertainment begins. The Coffee Clutch is sponsored by Kerrisdale Business Association and hosted by The Arbutus Rotary Club who will help serve up the goods. Kerrisdale Pharmacy: Personal Care is Paramount by Sarah Gordon

Undoubtedly he has this effect on many people; when I met Colin Holyk I was immediately aware of his genuine warmth and professionalism. Although extremely busy, Colin Holyk took the time to talk to me about Kerrisdale Pharmacy where he is the Pharmacy Manager. He owns the business with his father Michael Holyk. The story of this father and son pharmacist team began on a farm in Westlock, Alberta where Michael Holyk was raised. He earned his Pharmacy degree in 1959 and began his career in Camrose, where he met his wife Kathryn who is a retired registered nurse. They eventually returned to his hometown of Westlock where they raised their four children and he opened Holyk Super Drug Mart. At the age of five Colin Holyk enthusiastically began assisting his father at the family pharmacy with jobs such as taking out the garbage and stocking shelves. Michael Holyk instilled a strong work ethic in his children which has served them all well. Colin Holyk’s maternal grandparents moved from Alberta to Vancouver where they settled in Kerrisdale. The Holyk family would come out every summer to visit. Colin Holyk recalls his father having his eye on Kerrisdale Pharmacy for some time. In 1981 an opportunity presented itself to buy the business (at that time it was located on West 41st Avenue) and a year later Michael Holyk moved his family to Vancouver. He and his wife have lived in

the same Kerrisdale house ever since. Colin Holyk proudly reported that his father was a dispensing pharmacist for 53 years and is still a consultant with the business. Colin Holyk graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at UBC in 1990 and joined the Kerrisdale Pharmacy team. In 1997 the business moved to its new (and current) location at 5591 West Boulevard. In 2000 Colin Holyk became the Pharmacy Manager and one year later with his father purchased Hollyburn Pharmacy in West Vancouver. Colin and Michael Holyk pride themselves on always being there for the patient, which is of utmost importance to them. In addition to his regular pharmacist duties, Colin Holyk is actively involved in the pharmaceutical care of nursing home residents in Vancouver, is a prescription compounding specialist, and a certified compression stocking fitter. Kerrisdale Pharmacy is a cut above many other drug stores because it is a compounding pharmacy. There are only a handful of other Vancouver pharmacies that offer this highly specialized service. So, what exactly is a compounding pharmacy? When asked this question, Colin Holyk’s eyes lit up as he thoroughly enjoys spending time in the pharmacy’s lab. Pharmacy compounding allows a physician to prescribe a medication, prepared by a pharmacist, which is tailor-made for the

patient. Today, the vast majority of medications are mass-produced by pharmaceutical drug companies. A compounding pharmacist is trained to compose alternate dosages which may also come in other forms such as creams, caplets and suspensions, and to create specialized compounds for pediatric and veterinary patients.

It was Michael Holyk’s vision to expand the business which saw the current location almost double in size. In 2008 and 2009, they undertook a floor to ceiling renovation which improved the flow within the store. They used as many local and natural materials in the renovation as possible including natural oyster slate tile, ceiling beams made of local red cedar, environmentally friendly paint, and the central pillar uniquely encased in a reclaimed and hollowed out Vancouver Island Douglas Fir tree which was uprooted in a windstorm.
As busy as Colin Holyk is he still finds time to pursue his interests which include: travelling, cooking (if he hadn’t gone into pharmacy he may very well have become a chef), playing guitar and performing with his band called Line 49, gardening, running races and marathons, and being actively involved with three boards (he has been president of the Kerrisdale Business Association for three years now).
Kerrisdale Pharmacy’s client base is very loyal and encompasses all age groups from young families to seniors. Many of the staff and clients have built a rapport. Conveniently housed within the same building is Matters of Health Medical Clinic which allows patients to visit the doctor and pharmacy in one trip. At the beginning of August Colin Holyk and his fiance travelled to Napa where they wed in a small ceremony. Christine Manson Holyk is a senior associate in wealth management with Scotia McLeod in West Vancouver.
Colin Holyk is very proud of the small businesses in Kerrisdale village. He finds it exciting that many places where his grandparents shopped are still thriving. He should take great pride that the very thing he loves about Kerrisdale he and his father have had a hand in creating. HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION by Sarah Gordon Our camping adventures were plentiful. At our first campsite in the Okanagan we felt like Indiana Jones, with signs warning us to beware of rattle snakes and falling rocks. We learnt the fine art of sleeping like a loosely packed tin of sardines. We fell asleep to a symphony of crickets, and were abruptly awoken to every camper’s enemy, the patter of raindrops on the tent, followed by vigorous tarp hoisting in the wee hours. Morning songbirds awoke us, and after packing up our soggy camping gear we were on the road again. Mission: to recreate a retro family road trip. Armed with books, games, cds, and a couple of MP3 players, there were no other props to propel us forward on our journey through B.C. and Washington State. Ambitious? Certainly. Our children are fully aware that portable dvd players exist. Risky? You bet. Yet my husband and I survived long journeys as kids and we evolved into fully functioning adults. We felt confident that our children would benefit from this experience. This was to be a sampler road trip, akin to the variety pack cereals found at the supermarket. Since this was our first time tenting as a family, we decided to ease in gently by offering up a few nights of camping, a couple of nights spent with friends at their home, and an overnight stay at a guest house. We set off in our heavily laden vehicle, which looked like it would burst at the seams with one false move. On day one near Chilliwack, I pulled out my first secret weapon. On a last minute whim I had packed Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe Family Pack, containing 4 cds. I really was not sure if it would be popular; however I knew I would be happy, and as the saying goes, when mum is happy, everyone is happy. I had no idea Stuart McLean would become an addiction. “Can we listen to another story?” was heard frequently throughout the journey. We began to realize that five hours of stories could only stretch so far, so we had to ration dear Stuart. Secret weapon number two was to weave in reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Eureka! It too proved to be a hit and was the perfect way to carry on a group listening activity. Through long and winding roads, and 35 degree desert driving, we entered the wardrobe together.

Meeting up with our good friends in Trail offered us the comforts of home, wonderful company, terrific meals and then the inevitable sad goodbyes and when will we see you again? A visit to Nelson brought on a wave of nostalgia, as I had travelled the same route at a similar age to my children when I moved to B.C. The general feeling of the town remained remarkably the same. I was happy to be transported back to a place where music had frozen in time, with Paul McCartney and the Wings, Cat Stevens and Neil Young still playing in shops and restaurants as if they were at the top of the charts. Onto new frontiers, the final leg of our getaway was Leavenworth which we aptly approached via the Frontier border crossing. We travelled alongside the mighty Columbia River, which was mirror calm. We stopped to buy gas at an outpost where the female attendant was enjoying chewing tobacco. We equated our campground to an amusement park as it came complete with a hayride, swimming pool, pedal cars, an outdoor movie and yellow shirted employees riding merrily around in golf carts with miniature American flags waving patriotically behind them. Again wildlife awoke us, with cheeky squirrels sounding like nature’s alarm clock. We met exceptionally friendly fellow campers and shared stories about our two countries. It turned out to be a perfect slice of American pie. Our week long holiday will undoubtedly result in many “remember when…” moments. Meanwhile, we have all caught the camping bug and are eagerly pulling out maps as we plan our next tenting adventure.

Giddy up, pardners! Fly on over, angels, to the new home of Cowboys and Angels Toy Store. This business is less than three years old and is a Kerrisdale success story. In this short time a second location of Cowboys and Angels has opened in Kitsilano (W. 4th Avenue). Meanwhile, the W. 41st Avenue shop is on the move to a larger space across the street. Philip and Polly Grosvenor graciously set aside time from their hectic schedules to sit down to talk with me. Philip Grosvenor has been busy assisting with renovations at the new location (the former Nike store) which is larger and is on one level with a clever floor plan. Meanwhile, Polly Grosvenor has stationed herself across the street packing up the old store. They are creative and energetic entrepreneurs who both come from fascinating backgrounds.

Polly Grosvenor, who is originally from England, had an amazing career as a photographic stylist. She worked with international fashion magazines including Elle and Vogue. She also worked as a stylist for Royal family photo shoots and met them all, from Queen Elizabeth II to Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson. Philip Grosvenor, who is originally from Montreal, is a respected director of photography. He travelled the world while working on many commercials and feature films including Educating Rita, The Spy Who Loved Me and Superman. The couple have been married for twenty five years. They met in London at the opening of a fancy Chinese restaurant, where Polly Grosvenor told me celebrities such as Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones) were present. They have three children, a daughter (20), and two sons (ages 12 and 14). They left England and spent some time in Los Angeles but after a few years they opted to move to Hollywood North (Vancouver), where Philip Grosvenor had enjoyed time working on film shoots. Until four years ago Philip Grosvenor was still involved with the film industry, he had branched into producing; however the couple decided to leave it all behind and try something completely new, and chose to pursue Polly Grosvenor’s dream of opening a toy store.

In addition to the toy store and photo studio, Polly Grosvenor’s sister contributed an idea which became the third winning component of this business; the integration of a ceramics studio which has created a year round buzz with birthday parties and summer camps.
