The Stampede celebration provides a wide array of entertainment to choose from. We are hopeful that your "stay" with us is an enjoyable one! It is a truly wonderful enhancement to our community! Any seat chosen will provide an excellent view of the rodeo and other arena performances. You have an opportunity to support the arena project which includes the development of the surrounding area with a vendor concourse and updated restroom facilities! Visit the City's website with links to the Stampede Arena to learn about the many products available to purchase that will leave your lasting legacy on the project. New this year is the recently constructed Native Dance Pavilion in our park. You are certainly invited to take in the splendor of tradition as the dancers, young and Elders alike in full regalia, perform during the Stampede weekend. The structure too is a beautiful enhancement to our community. Rodeo from Page 4 depending on the performance and section. Chute seats are sold out for the Saturday performance. On Sunday, any seat is $12. Fans can expect a full range of Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association events and barrel racing, plus the WorldFamous Suicide Race after each rodeo performance. Activities begin Wednesday with opening of the Davis Shows carnival at the west end of East Side Park and the Omak Western and Native Art Show at The Courtyard Downtown, 28 N. Main St. (See Page 19.) Some encampment activities are planned that night as well. The encampment gets under way Wednesday evening. (See Page 17.) Preceding the Thursday night rodeo will be the annual Wrangler Kids’ Night, starting at 4 p.m. in the Omak Stampede Arena. Youngsters can compete in a variety of games; prizes will be given. (See Page 14.) Thursday is family night, with up to two children under 12 admitted free with each paying adult in sections G and H of the arena. Family night tickets are available only at the ticket office in East Side Park

Thursday also is Patriot Night in support of U.S. troops, with red, white and blue clothing encouraged. Members of the Washington National Guard will be on hand all weekend to help

out. Slack competition in timed events, if needed, will be after the rodeo on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Admission is free. Slack is offered when there are more contestants signed up for a timed event than can be run during the regular rodeo performances. The extra competitive time also allows contestants to make a showing at more than one rodeo per weekend. Although slack gives a sampling of rodeo action, the Stampede’s performances offer a full range of rodeo competition and related entertainment. This year, 464 contestants have registered through PRCA. Because they’re allowed to pay a penalty and “turn out” and not show up, the rodeo probably won’t have that many competitors, Stampede officials said. Each rodeo performance begins with the parade of flags, a drill involving horses and riders carrying flags sponsored by area businesses, clubs and agencies. Arena runs by royalty follow, with Stampede Queen Michelle Demmitt, Omak, reigning over the event. (See Page 10.) Assisting the cowboys will be bullfighters Tim Vredenburg and Rowdy Barry, and clown JJ Harrison,

Stock contractors are Big Bend, Ritzville, and Flying 5, Pomeroy. Friday is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night, with $1 from each rodeo ticket going to the campaign to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Rodeo participants and fans are urged to wear pink. Suicide Race fans wearing buttons, available on the grounds and in local businesses for $5 apiece, will be admitted to special viewing areas on the hill and on the dike in the park. Viewing also is available from many areas of the arena for rodeo ticket holders. Concessions will operate all weekend on the grounds. Vendors range from local service organizations to visiting souvenir shops, and products range from steak sandwiches to cowboy hats. Omak also offers plenty of diversions and shopping between rodeo shows. Other events planned during the

weekend include: • Ride-in, 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, Okanogan to Omak. • Youth parade, 10 a.m. Saturday, downtown. • Grand parade, 10 a.m. Sunday, downtown. • Christians in Action stage ministry. • Okanogan Valley Farmers’ Market in its customary location, Legion Park in Okanogan, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. • Post-rodeo dances Friday and Saturday nights, with separate admission, in the arena dance area. Fees are charged for parking on the grounds at $5 per vehicle. Flaggers will be on hand to help direct traffic at the end of each rodeo performance.

Riders canter around the parade of flags, which opens each performance of the Omak Stampede.

Demmitt serves as queen By Sheila Corson The Chronicle OMAK – In her time as Miss Omak Stampede, Michelle Demmitt has conquered fears, grown in confidence and had a lot of fun. Demmitt, 17, was the only contestant for the title after another girl dropped out at the last minute in October, she said. Demmitt served as Okanogan County Fair Queen last year, so she had some experience. As Stampede Queen, she’s been busier than ever, having a parade or event every weekend, she said. She and her parents, Jeff and Lisa Demmitt, and grandmother, Betty Smith, load up and travel together all over Washington, several Oregon towns and a few in Canada. Demmitt said traveling is one of the best parts of being Stampede Queen. She loves staying busy and hates to be bored. Omak High School senior Demmitt said she wants to be a veterinarian specializing in large animals. She has trained two colts herself, and as a member of 4-H and FFA has gathered experience with and knowledge of horses. An Omak native, Demmitt said her family has attended Stampede for as long as she can remember. She admired the queens, but never thought she could be one. Despite a fear of public speaking and aversion to having her picture taken,

Sheila Corson/The Chronicle

Michelle Demmitt waves to the crowd gathered for the Conconully Independence Day Parade on July 3. Demmitt decided to apply for the queen position. “I was hoping this would help me grow as a person and I definitely have,” she said. In the future, she said she hopes to get back into barrel racing and be able to compete again. She is looking at attending

Omak Inn

the University of Idaho or Washington State University after she graduates. Wherever she ends up, she hopes to help out at Stampede, Demmitt said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I wouldn’t trade a moment of it,” Demmitt said.

If you are ever pulled over for a DUI, you are not required to perform a Field Sobriety Test or a portable breath test (pbt). However, the pbt is different than a breathalyzer at the station. If you are arrested, and you refuse a breathalyzer (BAC) at the station, you may lose your license to drive for up to one year. In summary:

Marchand is grand marshal By Sheila Corson The Chronicle OMAK – For her work with the Omak Stampede and World-Famous Suicide Race and her faithfulness to traditions, Colville tribal elder Mary A. Marchand was selected as this year’s grand marshal. She and her brother, Lewis, are descended from the Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan, Methow and San Poil tribes. They were taught the traditional ways by their great-grandmother, Marchand’s great-niece Crystal Miller-Smith said. When her father was in his final days, he told Marchand, 83, to serve her people, no matter if they are white, red, yellow,

brown or polka-dotted, she said. “That is what she has been doing ever since,” Miller-Smith said, “even if she hasn’t found any polka-dotted people yet.” That service has come in several ways, impacting the tribes and surrounding communities. She began her work with the tribe as a senior bus driver, ran the community center, served on the Colville Business Council and now shares her knowledge with the history-archaeology department, Miller-Smith said. Marchand often is called upon to represent the tribes. Her prayers have blessed many high-level conferences and consultations between the Colville tribes

and others, Miller-Smith said. She has been involved in the Omak Stampede and World-Famous Suicide Race for years, conducting a camp opening to greet visitors. Tribal members involved in the Suicide Race look to Marchand to teach them race traditions, Miller-Smith said. She reminds them to take care of the race, themselves and the horse. “Mary is the elder that everyone turns to for guidance in carrying out traditional ways,” Miller-Smith said. Marchand also raised four sons by herself – Ernie Williams, Disautel; Randy

Being a spiritual person with a love for the Creator, Marchand leads by example and has taught her children to do the same, Williams said. Over her years, she has sought to preserve history, language, culture and experiences for other tribal members. “She is a strong supporter of life in itself,” he said. She doesn’t preach, but she tells people of her life experiences to share lessons. “She talks the talk because she walks the walk,” Williams said. “When she talks, people listen.”

On Thursday, the grand opening of the new dance pavilion will be at 6 p.m. The new pavilion is of the same design as one in Nespelem, and will be followed by two more in other communities, designer Smoker Marchand said. The Colville Confederated Tribes built them with federal funds from the Bonneville Power Administration. The Omak pavilion took two months to complete. The dance floor is 80 feet across, the rest of the 120-foot diameter being bleachers.

The Omak Stampede Arena is nestled among trees in the city’s East Side Park. The arena was built in 2009.

New arena gets improvements By Sheila Corson The Chronicle OMAK – The Omak Stampede Arena has a few new features for its second year in operation. The 1935 arena was replaced in 2009. This year, rodeo-goers will have the

option of watching the action on the arena floor or on a new 15- by 24-foot video board, Stampede Office Manager Sarah Grooms said. The screen is also capable of replays, but more trained staff will be needed before that feature is used. City Administrator Ralph Malone said

things went very well last year, with the main concerns being sound. The city is addressing that issue and working the bugs out of the system. A few other improvements include a taller barrier around the upper grandstands and a concrete pad for disabled access in the south grandstands, Malone said.

The race they call ‘Suicide’ The race — rite of passage and subject of news and controversy — turns 75 By Dee Camp The Chronicle OMAK – The World-Famous Suicide Race turns 75 this year. Its roots are in a mountain race run by American Indians for many years in Keller. In 1935, Omak Stampede Publicity Chairman Claire Pentz, in search of something exciting to add to the fledgling rodeo, pattered the race after the Keller event. During the Suicide Race, competitors start 100 or so feet back from the hill’s edge, then race down the embankment and into the Okanogan River. Depending on the water level, they either swim or gallop across the river and then race up the bank and into the Stampede Arena. In 1993, E.E. “Hoagy” Shattuck, a Stampede board member, calculated the hill at a 54.7 percent grade that runs 210

from Mary Ogden for four years, then the property was purchased by Omak

Race from Page 25 Stampede Inc. in 1956. It now belongs to the city of Omak, as does East Side Park where the Stampede Arena is located. Riders in the 1935 Suicide Race were Leo Crossland, Leonard St. Peter, Tom Woods, Bev Connors, Mathew Dick, Pete Carden, Edward Armstrong, Eddie Parsons, Wallace Moomaw, Alex Dick and Bert Evans. Moomaw placed first, with Connors second and Evans third. The first race attracted what has become an annual parade of news coverage – from newsreels to television and still photographers who have spread images of the Suicide Race throughout the world. It has been featured Pentz twice on TV’s “You Asked for It,” and in dozens of newspapers, a fulllength Walt Disney movie, “Run, Appaloosa, Run,” and on national and international television. The young boy in the movie was Casey Nissen, a Suicide Race champion many times over. Alex Dick, a participant in the first race, became the race’s winningest rider with race victories starting in 1941 and continuing until his retirement in 1970. He died June 16, 2002, at his Omak home at age 83. No competitor has yet matched the winning record of Dick’s horse, Brownie. A powerful range cayuse, Brownie carried Dick for most of the 53 races he dominated over 36 years. Dick compiled a record of 32 firsts and 12 placings, beginning with a third in the first Suicide Race. During their heyday in the 1950s, the pair won 23 of 28 races, including 11 in a row. Brownie’s dynasty was ended by Big Jim, a powerful bay that appeared in 1966

Other first-year inductees were rodeo co-founders Leo Moomaw and Tim Bernard, and Suicide Race founder Claire Pentz. second with Kerry Carden aboard. Since that time, several horses have launched assaults on the records of Brownie and Big Jim. Stiff competition has kept any from repeating either horse’s marks. Besides Alex Dick, other competitors have stayed with the race for years. Casey Nissen first raced in 1975 as a 16year-old. He won the overall title in 1994, 1998 and 2000.

to sweep both races. Big Jim won both races in 1968 with Omak’s Mervel Allen aboard. They made it a three-race sweep in 1969, the year Stampede added the Friday night rodeo and Suicide Race. Twice more, in 1971 under Don Wood and 1974 under Leo Bruce, Big Jim scored three-race sweeps en route to a history of 20 firsts, seven seconds and a third place finish. The last time Big Jim appeared in a Suicide Race was 1979, scoring a first and a

Aaron Carden, who first raced in 1985, won the overall title in 1991 and 1995, and again in 2007 after an eight-year hiatus. While most competitors are male, a few women have ridden down the hill. In 1959, Rusty Tawes, a 17-year-old from Pendleton, Ore., slipped into town announcing that she had come to ride in the Suicide Race. That threw the Stampede committee into a frenzy. With former racer Francis Charette as her mentor, Tawes won entry into the race as its first female competitor. Without a saddle – using only a halter and reins – she crossed the finish line in sixth place. In the years since, several other women have competed. Horse owners also play a big role in the race. Some ride, others work in the background organizing the race, bankrolling the horses’ training and so on. Suicide Races have been the grand finale of each rodeo performance since 1945, with a few exceptions.

Race from Page 27 and another collapsed in the arena after the Thursday race. Over the years, Stampede officials have instituted a number of safety measures, including requiring competitors to wear life vests, requiring horses to demonstrate ahead of the race the ability to go over the

hill and swim the river, instituting veterinary checks, placing soft sand on the hill, removing rocks from the river entry and stationing rescue boats in the river. Protests have been fewer in recent years, especially after Stampede officials turned over organization of the race to the Omak Stampede and Suicide Race Owners and Jockeys Association. The group has instituted other rules,

and this year plans to focus on race history as the event marks 75 years, association spokeswoman Pete Palmer said.

Some information in this report and the first 50 years worth of winners in the accompanying chart were compiled by the late John E. Andrist, publisher of The Chronicle for many years. Dee Camp updated the chart, based on Chronicle coverage, to reflect winners during the past 25 years.

Stampede entertainers lined up By Dee Camp The Chronicle OMAK – Trick riders, bull fighters and a goofy clown will entertain rodeo fans during the Omak Stampede. Sally Bishop, Roz Beaton and Madison Macdonald, known as Sureshot Productions, will entertain during performances of the Omak Stampede. They hail from Calgary, Alberta, and perform trick and Roman riding “at deathdefying speeds” with some of the highest difficulty of any in rodeo, according to a Stampede announcement. Bishop performs “four-up” Roman riding in which she jumps a team of four horses at high speed. She is a third generation trick rider and a professional stunt performer for film and television. Rodeo clown JJ Harrison grew up in Okanogan and became interested in rodeo during high school. He later was on the Washington State University rodeo team. Harrison has been a middle school teacher for eight years. He has become one of the most soughtafter rodeo clowns in the Northwest, and performed at the 2009 Omak Stampede. Bullfighters this year are Tim Vredenberg and Rowdy Barry. They help protect cowboys during the bull-riding event. Vredenburg began bullfighting in 1994 and was named bullfighter of the year in the semi-professional ranks for two. He became a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association member in 1996. Rowdy Barry will return to Omak to work the bulls with Vredenberg. He has

Bill Lawless worked rodeos across the U.S. and Canada since starting in 1986. “I tried riding bulls for a while, really tried a lot more than I actually rode,” he said. “I started fighting bulls in the practice
