It’s time for rodeo action By AL CAMP The Chronicle OMAK — There will be a familiar event opening the 83rd Omak Stampede rodeo Aug. 11-14 in East Side Park. Nine, wild horses will be released into the arena in a Wild Horse Race on Thursday and Friday nights. The Top 4 each night plus one wild card entrant – drawn after Friday night – will compete Saturday night for the championship. Wild Horse racing – three cowboys trying to saddle and get a wild horse past an end point – was one of three original rodeo events during the late 1800’s. Ranch hands would put a team together to compete against other ranch teams. The last time a Wild Horse Race kicked off the Omak Stampede was 2005. This year’s race includes 18 teams – the book filled within 45 minutes –

coming from Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington and Canada. There is $10,000 added to entry fees this year. Organizes are Bass Williams, Gary Stevens and Dave Shaw. The races will be in memory of former Omak Stampede president Cactus Jack Miller, who often competed in the event. “We’re bringing back to the good old days,� spokesman Joaquin Bustamante said. Teams of three – mugger, rider and shankman – attempt to use a shank and halter to control a wild horse before attempting to place a saddle with a quick cinch. The idea is to ride the bucking bronc past a predetermined line, say between two barrels or between a fence and a barrel. The imaginary finish lie is about 30 to 35 fee wide. All the chaos makes it fun viewing, in no matter where you look there is something exciting occurring for several minutes. One thing is certain for the rodeo, there will be a new all-around cowboy. Rodeo From Page 7 graduate now living in North Carolina, also is not on a list of anticipated entrants. Proctor, the 2011 PRCA bull riding champion, is sitting No. 7 in PRCA and PBR, which would be good enough to get him to each organization’s national finales. The early contestant list shows only one Okanogan County entrant – Morgan Seemann in calf roping. Which night competitors will be at the rodeo has yet to be determined. Some compete in slack, which is free planned for 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12. Many of those competing are trying to make the Top 15 for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at Las Vegas, Nev., in December. Each night $25,000 is up for grabs, which is enough to move cowboys up the ranks fast. Evan Jayne, who was the No. 1 bareback rider in the world when he competed in Omak last year, is on the list to return. Jayne, who grew up in France before moving as a teenager to Rockwall, Texas, is currently ranked No. 10. A quick scan of entrants signed for Omak include Ty Erickson of Helena, Mont., who is No. 3 in steer wrestling; Jake Watson of Hudson’s Hope in British Columbia, Canada, who is No. 4 in saddle bronc riding; Tyrel

Retirement opens up race By AL CAMP The Chronicle OMAK – Predicting who will win this year’s 81st World-Famous Suicide Races won’t be easy. Four races come after each performance of the Stampede Rodeo the second weekend in August. Jockeys and horses to zip down a steep embankment, cross the Okanogan River and gallop into the rodeo arena each night in a matter of a couple minutes. The favorite just about every year since 2008 has been Taz with jockey Loren Marchand. But who could have foreseen Taz being tied for the overall title last year? Taz and Loren Marchand are the lone combination to win twice all four races in a year, doing it in 2008 and 2012 since four performances started in 1979. Nor could anyone predict that the 15year-old Taz, owned by Jim Phillips, would head to green pastures after claiming seven overall titles, 23 first-place finishes and ranked No. 2 all time among

Eagle Boy, with jockey Scott Abrahamson, won once, finished second twice and was fourth once to finish with an identical 15 points. The overall champion was decided by a point system - 1, 5 points; 2, 4 points; 3, 3 points; 4, 2 points; 5, 1 point. Those points represent a lot of money. Last year there was an approximate $40,000 purse with the Top 4 each race winning cash – 1, $4,000; 2, $3,000; 3, $2,000; and 4, $1,1000. (Of note, Taz finished with winnings of $12,000 compared to $11,000 for Eagle Boy). Eagle Boy enters the fray the prohibitive favorite, where he and more than 30 other horses will be attempting to squeeze into a final field of 20. Vet checks and swim tests started the weekend of July 22-24. Final tests, which include running down the hill, were July 2931. If more than 20 horses pass everything and pay an entry fee, there will be runoff races at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, to get the field down to the maximum of 20 horses. Others that could challenge for the overall crown and earned points last year include

A new horse this year, a gray Onyx that’s owned by Shawnnae Pakootas could be a sleeper. Oliver Pakootas, who rode BoShay last year, was putting Onyx through the river test last weekend. “That is a sleeper,� said outrider Larry Peasley said. “That horse is fast and can move with the water really good. “For rookie newcomer horse, they better watch out. He’s a burner.� All the entries will be attempting to enter their names into history’s list of champions. At the top of their wish list will be an overall championship. Next might be winning all four races in a given year. The list is short for taking all four races. Taz lies atop, having done it twice. Others include Patch and Aaron Carden in 2007, Reuben and Tyler Peasley in 2006, JD and Casey Nissen in 1994 and Tony with Kerry Carden in 1981. Aaron Carden, who has seen a lot of horses and jockeys the last four decades, spoke about the teaming of Taz and Loren Marchand. “It has been a humbling experience to watch these two dominant forces; you put me back into retirement knowing that I had to

The next year Taz was guided to the quicker line and put Patch to the outside. “To Taz, enjoy your green grass; to Loren, keep chasing that record, stay classy, my friend,” Aaron Carden wrote. “No one can take what you have accomplished away from you.” Taz lands at No. 2 overall in wins, just ahead of the great Big Jim with 20 wins. Brownie holds the record with 27 wins set between 1949 and 1965. Taz may be retired, but Marchand, 28, still has eyes on overtaking Alex Dick’s record of 32 victories. He will be amongst a small group of about two dozen jockeys signed as of July 24.

In 2006, she rode her horse Blackie in the Omak Stampede Grand Parade wearing a sash her mother had made just before the parade. Her older sister, Katie Fergus, had been named Okanogan County Junior Rodeo Association queen that year, so Stevens had caught the rodeo royalty bug looking up to her sister. “I saw her doing it and I started doing it,” Stevens said. Her mother, Brenda, dressed her up, made a banner for the horse and a sash for Emily, which both said “2016 Miss Omak Stampede.” “It just kind of happened to work out that my mom picked that year,” Stevens said. Omak Stampede Queen. Stevens, 17, a senior at Okanogan High School, said the experience of fulfilling a childhood dream has been a great one. “I got to go and meet a lot of people,” Stevens said. “I got to travel all over the place.” Stevens says the experience has got her back into barrel racing and she has even been trying to master break away roping. Stevens said she chose to try out for queen this year to be able to be involved in rodeo again. “I wasn’t super competitive in rodeo, but I still wanted to be part of it,” Stevens said. “This allowed me to not be super competitive, but still be able to take part in events.” Stevens said the Omak Stampede has a special significance for her and that she plans to help out with the Stampede royalty program once her reign is over. Of all the events happening on Stampede weekend, Stevens said she is most excited for kids’ night. “Kids are the one thing that draws rodeo forward,” Stevens said. “It kind of melts my heart.” After high school, Stevens plans to go to college at Walla Walla Community College for an Associate’s Degree in accounting to do “payroll and that kind of stuff.” “I just really like the campus,” Stevens said. “It’s a good school and they also have a rodeo team.” Stevens said her dream has been going by fast, even with all the traveling required of Omak Stampede royalty. She was crowned in November. “It has flown by,” Stevens said. “I feel like its March and we’re just getting started.”

Artists converge in Omak By BROCK HIRES The Chronicle OMAK – Artwork from local and out-of-town artists will be featured during the 36th annual Omak Western and Native Art Show Aug. 11-14 at 19 N. Main St. The show, which is free to attend, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and from 9 am to 2 p.m. on Sunday. “The invitational Western & Native Art Show was founded in 1980 in conjunction with the Omak Stampede to further appreciation of fine art in our community,” organizers said. “Since 2004, Okanogan County Artists continue to organize one of the finest art shows in the Pacific Northwest.” A reception with hor d’oeuvres will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a live auction at 2:30 p.m. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Support Center. Awards will be given and

include: Best of show, best Western art, best Native American art, best local heritage, the 2016 poster award and people’s choice. The poster award winner’s artwork will be featured on next year’s show poster. This year’s honors went to Betty Billups for her oil painting dubbed, “Autumn Fields.” “Betty specializes ‘en plein air’ which forces the artist to work quickly and observantly in order to capture the essence of a scene before and even while it changes,” organizers said. “Although small, the event offers an excellent variety of quality art that captivates viewers when experienced in person and provides a life time satisfaction when purchased for gift, home, family, and business,” organizers said, “Original paintings, drawings and sculpture bring continued pleasure to the owner, they reflect our personal styles and beliefs, and can be a financial investment.”

George L. Traicheff ) Betty Billups is well known as an “en plein air” artist, as well as for her murals and western themed art. Plein air painters paint what they see and make decisions on what they “feel” as to what they capture and paint. A 1977 trip to Montana had her coming back to Montana and Idaho to live and work there. She spent a great deal of time on the Crow Indian reservation. The painting which is used in the 2016 poster was inspired by watching three friends riding and enjoying the autumn sunshine.

Encampment opens Wednesday Event offers a glimpse of tribes’ culture, traditions OMAK – Native American dancing, drumming and stick games are on tap Aug. 11-14 during the Omak Stampede Indian Encampment. Dancing and drumming will be in the tribal dance pavilion at the east end of East Side Park. Stick games are nearby. Thursday is campers’ night, with warmups, family rejoinings and memorials planned. Grand entries will be at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The stick game tournament has a $10,000 added purse. Entry fees will be charged, with divisions planned for five-man teams, three-man teams and youngsters. The host drum is Iron Spirit. Pat Nanamkin will be the head drum judge. Randy Lewis will be master of ceremonies, with Junior Gunshows as arena director.

Parades and Kids’ Day By CHRIS THEW and DEE CAMP The Chronicle

Kickoff party Stampede Organizers will once again honor Stampede sponsors with a kickoff party Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the east beer gardens. The Colville Confederated Tribes are supplying Chinook salmon and KFC will supplement the meal with other vittles. “It’s going to be a night of acknowledging the sponsors, because they are the ones who make everything happen,” said organizer Connie Thomas. The beer garden will be open with a no-host bar and a DJ will be providing music. The public event is free, except for the bar. Donations can be made, which will go to the cook, according to Thomas.

Ride-in Horses and riders will make their way from the Okanogan County Fairgrounds to the Omak Stampede Grounds for the official opening for the Omak Stampede on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 8:30 a.m. The Ride-in begins at the Okanogan County Fairgrounds and heads south to Highway 20, across the south bridge, north through Okanogan to Omak along Second Avenue, Elmway, Okoma Drive, Fourth Avenue and Main Street before crossing the Central Avenue Bridge in Omak and finally the Stampede arena. There will be a rest stop at the Eagles in Okanogan for complimentary refreshments for both riders and horses, according to organizers. Riders are expected to arrive at the Stampede Arena at 11:30 a.m. Registration for the Ride-In starts at 6 a.m. and runs until 8 a.m. the morning of the ride at the fairgrounds main gate. Entrants are only allowed one rider per horse and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs or stallions are allowed, according to organizers. Grand Parade A mix of rodeo princesses, politicians, businesses, bands, floats and, of course, all

sorts of horses and riders will snake their way through downtown Omak again this year. The Grand Parade will take place on Sunday, Aug. 14, starting at 10 a.m. Entries are expected by the end of July, but organizer Jodi Coggins says that entries are welcome up until Friday, Aug. 12. Local radio announcer Jim Skinner will be doing the announcing duties in front of VIP Insurance. Okoma Drive between Jasmine Street and Fourth Avenue will be closed off at 6 a.m. on Sunday to allow for the long line of entries to stage. Entries will march south down Fourth Avenue, turn north on Main Street, head west on Apple Street, turn south on Ash St, west on second and then south on Douglas Avenue to filter back to staging. A map of the parade route is available on Page 23. Roads on the parade route will be closed off prior to the event as well as side streets a block up from the route.

Wrangler Kid’s Night Preceding the Thursday night rodeo is the annual Wrangler Kids’ Night, starting at 4 p.m. in the arena. Youngsters can compete in a variety of games and a dress-up contest; prizes will be given. Admission is free.

Plenty of entertainment OMAK – A familiar lineup of arena entertainers and safety personnel will be joined this year by a new specialty act, the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls. Bullfighters Rowdy Barry and Erick Schwindt will return, along with clown/barrelman J.J. Harrison. Since the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls group formed in 1976, the performance team has performed in 19 countries on five continents. The group performed for Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee pageant celebrating her 60 years on the British throne and in Montevideo, Uruguay, on behalf of the U.S. Embassy. The group performs trick riding and roping. Riata Ranch, located in Three Rivers, Calif., is dedicated to enriching and enlightening the lives of young people through horsemanship and western performance, according to the group. Barry, who hails from Kennewick, has been a Stampede regular for several years and is a former National Finals Rodeo bullfighter. He owns Wild R

He also was a Roper and R i d e r calendar model in 1994 and 1996. He attended Walla Walla Community College and B l u e Mountain Community Rowdy Barry Colege in Pendleton, Ore. He and his wife, Laura Lee, have two children. He said he tried riding bulls, but tried more than he rode. He started fighting bulls in the practice pens. Joining Barry for the second year as a Stampede bullfighter is Erick Schwindt of Prineville, Ore. Schwindt, 24, is a native of

Modesto, Calif., and grew up in Lyons, Ore. He attended Linn Benton Community College in Oregon. He said he watched his older brother ride bulls and later a friend, Jesse Tennet, fight bulls. He attended a Danny Newman school and was hooked. He has been a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association member since September 2011. J.J. Harrison, 41, is another Stampede returnee. The Okanogan High School graduate, who now lives in Walla Walla, is known for his wild antics, dancing and inflatable “fat� suits. He works dozens of rodeos throughout the West and has won barrelman of the year honors in the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association multiple times. He was the lone rodeo clown to work the 2012 National Finals Rodeo. Harrison, the son of Peg Callaway and Chris Culp of Okanogan, is a graduate of Washington State University, has a master’s degree and is a former junior high teacher.

Christians in Action OMAK – Christians in Action celebrates its 44th year with music, free ice water, Bibles, Western church service and refreshments at the Omak Stampede Aug. 1114. The inspirational presentations are at Triangle Park between the carnival and rodeo arena. All events are free of admission and sponsored by Christians In Action, a local interdenominational non-profit corporation. Music begins at about 5 p.m. each night and continues until after the rodeo Friday and Saturday evenings. Returning to the stage that he shared with his parents Don and Patty Parks, Tom Parks brings his wife Debbie and their four children—Aaron, Caleb, Joshua, Melody—to the Christians In Action Gospel Stage Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Living in Branson, MO, they are on a Northwest Tour this year. Their original songs in Southern Gospel style includes Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, Drums, Ukulele, Dulcimer, Electric Bass and Doumbek Drum. Tune Valley resident Nicole Unser will take the stage at 5p.m. Saturday. She was awarded the 2015 first place prize in the “Country” category of the “Unsigned Only”

Music Competition for her original song “Smokin,'”selected from 7,000 entries from more than 100 countries worldwide. She has played legendary venues like the Ryman Auditorium and Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tenn. Loose Change, fronted by Kathy Peterson are also on the bill to perform at 6 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 p.m. Saturday evenings. The group comprised of Peterson, Brenda Behrent, April Garbat, Jerry Oliver and Lyn Pearce will perform a variety of bluegrass and olOther activities include a youth night Friday from 7-9 p.m. with Jason and Jamison Gibbons, Federal Way, and Kimberly Pfitzer, Okanogan. A Spanish services planned from 7-8 p.m. with the Rev. Raul Martinez and Eglesia del Tercer Dia (Church of the 3rd Day), Tonasket; Rodeo visitors are invited to the interdenominational outdoor Western church service at Sunday, 8:30 a.m. for a free continental breakfast, music and message in western style. Knowlton honored Longtime Stampede director died in April OMAK — An empty saddle remembrance of longtime Omak Stampede director Marj Knowlton is planned during the Saturday performance of the Omak Stampede Past President George Dunckel will lead the riderless horse during the tribute. Knowlton, 97, died April 17, 2016. She sold ads for the Stampede program for many years and later joined the board as program director. She worked on a variety of other Stampede projects, and was inducted into the Stampede Hall of Fame in 2005. She and her husband, Dave Knowlton, also a Stampede volunteer, served as grand parade grand marshals in 2000. Knowlton was born Nov. 2, 1918, to William and Evelyn Hutchings in Galveston, Texas. She and her mother moved to Washington later,

and her mother later married August Oliver Zitting. The family moved to the Aeneas Valley area of Okanogan County. Knowlton married Frank Zabreznik on April 27, 1936. She worked as Aeneas Valley postmaster. The family later moved to Riverside, where they owned and operated a dairy farm until 1961. In 1965 they purchased the Motel Nicholas in Omak. She ran the motel until 1976, when it was sold. Frank Zabreznik died in 1973. After selling the motel, she worked in a clothing store in Okanogan and later opened The Fashion Shop on Main Street in Omak. She married Knowlton in 1982; he died in 2009. Marj Knowlton also was active in the Omak Chamber of Commerce, serving as president in 1984. Survivors include five children; 12 grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
