Klondike Hill Assisted Living is one of many facilities located in the state changing to meet the needs of the next generation of clients and patients.

Assisted living changing with wave of ‘baby boomers’ By Dannie Oliveaux The Chronicle

ith the next generation – the “baby boomers” – coming up, assisted-living facilities are changing with the times. According to AssistedLivingFacilities.org, the next decade will see an explosion of baby boomers flooding elder-care facilities in the U.S. The generation is more tech-savvy, health conscious and physically active compared

to previous generations. Ferry County Public Hospital District Chief Executive Officer Gary Robertson said the baby boomer generation is still 10 years away from assisted living. Robertson, a 40-year veteran, said the industry is seeing technological change with the current generation coming in with Facebook, Skype and other social medias. “People want access to the Internet because that is how they communicate with their family, email their kids and grandkids,” Robertson said.

“This generation may be as tech savvy as the one coming up, but they’re coming on board.” Robertson said his facility, Klondike Hill Assisted Living, provides Wi-Fi for clients. Robertson said many assisted living facilities have Nintendo Wii stations available for clients to use exercise programs or games such as bowling. Today, Robertson said, people have a choice of living at home or in an assisted living facility, but the economy plays a major factor in assisted living

and even nursing home admissions. “The people who chose assisted living usually make a choice,” Robertson said. “They don’t want to bother with yard and home maintenance. They want someone to come and take care of them.” He said many chose assisted living for socialization. “People who are socially isolated are not as healthy,” Robertson said. Robertson said there’s been

Changes from 1 a change in social activities among assisted-living facilities with taking clients on shopping trips and other events. Robertson said that steadily over the years he has seen clients coming to assisted living healthier than years before. “Health care has improved tremendously over the past 20 years,” Robertson said. “And I can see that continuing.” He said he sees the baby boomers staying at home using “telehealth” with computer programs such as Skype to report such things as blood pressure or communicate with nurses. “I can see more of that happening with the generation coming up,” he said. Robertson said assisted living facilities usually take care of people from their local area. “Basically, our patients are our customers and we cater to them,” said Robertson. Depending on the majority of ethnic makeup, facilities cater to them because of dietary

climate. He sees the nation moving to a national health care, but how the county gets there is the disagreement. “I think it will make our

population healthier with preventative care,” said Robertson. “We will have a healthier population coming in.” He said he doesn’t see a “big surge” in baby boomers coming to assisted living, but more of them staying at home because they’re healthier. He said the admittance to assisted living peaked several years ago. Today, most assistant living facilities are small one- or twobedroom apartments, rather than a single room used in most nursing homes. “It’s been evolving into more of personal apartments,” said Robertson. He said most facilities have gotten away from a set schedule for meals and housekeepers and are focused on meeting individuals’ needs. “Twenty years ago, we had a set of rotating menus with no choices. Now, it’s almost like short order,” he said. “We cater more to their dietary needs, desires and choices. We try to be more sensitive.”

Officers say, just drop it off and drive away – no questions asked. “A lot of people have drugs all over their house,” Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said. “We tell them don't flush it, it's bad for the water. Doctor offers concussion care By Al Camp The Chronicle OMAK — Concussions are often considered a sports injury, yet they occur all around. A child playing at school can suffer one accidentally on the playground. You could strike your head on a carnival ride or bump heads while frolicking with friends. “We have all heard about the NFL player or professional boxer who developed delayed neurologic disease, or brain damage, thought to be linked to multiple concussions,” said Dr. Joshua G. Schkrohowsky, who travels the region treating sports injuries. “With the amount of hard hits they take, it is no surprise that there would be repercussions, but what we may not realize is that concussions plague us all.” According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are up to

“ We have all heard about the NFL player or professional boxer who developed neurologic disease, or brain damage, thought to be linked to multiple concussions... what we may not realize is that concussions plague us all. Dr. Joshua G. Schkrohowsky

” 3.8 million concussions annually, many of them sportrelated, he said. Fewer than 2,000 concussions were suffered by professional football players. Although most people, when thinking of concussions in sports, think of football, they are just as prevalent in girls soccer and girls basketball, said

Schkrohowsky, 34. “They have a higher incidence than guys do,” he said. “Wrestling and cheerleading have a fair amount of concussions.” The cheerleader doing stunts, flying through the air but landing badly, can suffer a concussion, he said.

To address the problem, Schkrohowsky has set up a concussion management program with free testing for all athletes in North-Central Washington. That’s from Oroville to Curlew south to Entiat, he said.

Doctor from 3 “It’s a good service for the high school, and allows the high school to have some medical backup,” Schkrohowsy said. “They can set up, run the program themselves. They can do a lot themselves to get athletes back to play as safely as possible. That’s the goal.” There should be plenty of takers, since one in 10 high school athletes will sustain a concussion, the doctor said. “Too many concussions can be pretty traumatic, if not treated appropriately,” he said. “A few concussions can end your career. “I really feel that concussion management is a big issue – it has been for the national media — and that there is a significant lack of knowledge among athletes, parents, coaches, and physicians.” Recovery can be a few days or a few months. “You need to know what

you are looking for in order to manage them,” Schkrohowsky said. But it is not just children who get concussions, which was brought home when Schkrohowsky’s father-in-law recently sustained a highgrade concussion while mountain biking. “Athletes who suffer a concussion should wait at least a week after becoming symptom-free before returning to sport,” he said. “Even greater caution should be taken with younger athletes, 16 years and younger, because their brain is more susceptible and takes longer to recover. “State law requires all high school athletes to get a written consent from a licensed medical provider trained in evaluating concussions before returning to play.” Schkrohowsky has an ongoing discussion about concussions at Facebook at www.facebook.com/MISTort ho. The doctor rotates his

services among clinics in Omak, Chelan and the Methow Valley. Schkrohowsky spends Tuesdays and Thursdays in Omak through the Mid-Valley Medical Group, Monday and Friday in Chelan and Wednesdays at the Country Clinic in Winthrop. The doctor moved to the region in November 2011. He graduated from the John Hopkins University of School of Medicine, did orthopedic residence training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and most recently did sports fellowship in Innsbruck, Austria. “I am specially trained to take care of athlete’s injuries,” the sports and orthopedic surgeon said of working with joint injuries such as a bad shoulder, elbow or knee. “I’m especially adept with any arthroscopic procedure such as (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries or rotator cuff repairs.” There’s not much of a waiting list.

“I see patients right away,” Schkrohowsky said. “If it’s athlete injury, we will get them in within a week. “I’m pretty passionate about sports care. I’ve set up a center of sports medicine in the area to treat sports-related injuries.” Schkrohowsky has done research on ACL injuries to the knee, in which he specializes. “There’s two reasons to get treated here,” he said. “One is there is no reason to travel to get better care. And two, the hospitals here are wellequipped to do 90 percent of all procedures here. “We are performing procedures at hospitals that have not been done (previously) in North Central Washington. We are on the cutting edge.” Schkrohowsky can be reached at 509-689-4000. More about the doctor’s Center for Sports Medicine, Methow Institute of Sports Traumatology, is online at www.MISTortho.com.

Hospital departments pass inspections “ By Dee Camp The Chronicle

BREWSTER – Three Rivers Hospital’s Advantage Durable Medical Equipment Department has been re-accredited by the Board of Certification/ Accreditation and the laboratory received its best state inspection to date. The board is one of 10 nationwide companies allowed to carry out the accreditation survey process, hospital spokeswoman Rebecca Meadows said. The survey was conducted to ensure the business maintains standards Medicare requires for proper and safe care of all patients. Department Manager Bennie Polvos said the survey is done every three years and the department has always exceeded the survey’s requirements. It must maintain a high quality and standard of patient care and follow up, along with preserving an open line of communication among referring

hours he works with patients and physicians is an acknowledgment to the quality of care he shows to our patients.” Advantage Durable Medical Equipment is in the Healthbeat Fitness Center Building, 537 W. Main St. The lab inspection showed one deficiency. The state Department of Health’s Laboratory Quality Assurance program recently

inspected the lab for renewal of its medical test site license under Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services laws and Federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. Manager Jeremy Vandelac said he will reply with a plan of correction. He said a medical test site freezer was unable to Vandelac maintain the low temperature required for chemistry control material and the site had no documentation of corrective action. Meadows said the deficiency had nothing to do with patient results. Vandelac said the lab performs around 6,500 ordered tests a month. “It is very rare for a lab to receive zero deficiencies,” he said.
