Swine are a common animal sold at the Market Stock Sale, which attracts a crowd of about 300 spectators.

Market brings in bucks Sales surpassed $227,000 in 2012 The Chronicle OKANOGAN – Every year, the Market Stock Sale is one of the largest events of the Okanogan County Fair, with more than $227,000 exchanging hands at the 2012 event. The 3 p.m. sale, in the Berg Brothers Pavilion, attracts a crowd of about 300 for an afternoon of bidding on grand and reserve champion hogs, steers and lambs, plus blue and red ribbon animals. Youth who show steers, swine and lambs can sell their animals during the event, which typically sees nearly 200 animals change owners. A second sale, the Fur and Feather Auction, is planned at 1 p.m. Sunday for youngsters to sell smaller animals such as poultry and rabbits. Swine were the top-selling animal last year with 106 hogs being sold. Jordyn Boesel, a Malott 4-H member, had the 264-pound grand champion hog, which sold for $6 per pound to Sharon Holmdahl, Tonasket. Ayeris Jones, a junior open competitor from Omak, had the 262-pound reserve champion hog. Omak Feed and Supply bought it for $4 a pound. The total sales of $227,679 was a bump up from previous years, including sales of $197,667 in 2011

and $216,000 in 2010. Other top animals included a 142-pound lamb and a 1,407pound steer. Jordan Hughes, a junior open competitor from Tonasket, sold his 142-pound grand champion lamb for $5.50 per pound to Shannon’s Cafe, Tonasket. The 130-pound reserve champion lamb, shown by junior open competitor Sarah Roach, Omak, brought $4 per pound from Omak Feed and Supply. The grand champion steer belonged to Alexis Jones, a 4-H member from Okanogan. The 1,407-pound animal brought $2.50 a pound from Sawyer and Sawyer, Tonasket. Amber Duke, a junior open

competitor from Okanogan, sold her 1,348-pound steer to Okanogan Concrete for $2.75 a pound. Bidders have a choice of buying the animals outright or paying support – the difference between the packer price and the animal’s sale price. Packer prices vary from year to year, and are set just before the fair. Processors set a floor price, at which bidding starts. Upon arrival at the sale, those who plan to bid can sign up for a bidder number and pick up a listing of all exhibitors and their animals. The listing includes the type of ribbon the animal earned and its weight. Sales are based on price per pound.

Okanogan Valley Concrete With a history stretching back to the late 1930s, our building originally housed Alaska Brick. The business changed hands around 1952 and became Columbia Concrete Pipe Co., specializing in the production of blocks, bricks and irrigation pipes. Some years later, the words ‘pipe company’ were dropped. Operating as Okanogan Valley Concrete now for nearly 20 years, the business is alive and well, producing an assortment of concrete, crushed rock and pre-cast products.
