Oli Southall Aspiring illustrator, designer and fashion enthusiast. My muses are contemporary line drawing, experimenting with colour and modern fashion. I am an enthusiastic, loyal and willing worker. I’m eager to learn more and further my talents to persue my interests.

Line Illustrated Digitally Coloured Observed Illustrations

Heavily influenced by Egon Schiele and Aaron Earley, these 2 experimental line pieces were featured in an art exhibition in Wellington, Shrewsbury between the 7th and the 9th July where they received a lot of local attention but also an offer to purchase. The flat colour element was strongly based off Cliff Mills use of flat colour being applied digitally with the combination of line later causing my discovery of watercolour and line artist Antolio Lopez giving me my real discovery of watercolour.

Corperate Christmas Card for Halesowen College In this assignment, I had to create the 2017 corporate Christmas card to be sent from the college to other colleges, schools and people like Ofsted meaning that the card was a reflection of the college so the correct impression had to be made for the appropriate audience. I chose an illustrative approach with festive-based imagery and calligraphic text as I felt that they were the most engaging mediums. The ink illustration clearly shows the imagery while showing a hand-rendered style giving the design a personal touch and the text seeming hand-written engaging the audience more through the familiarity of calligraphic text bringing Halesowen’s card out from the rest.

Gosha Rubchinskiy Fanzine In this assignment, I had to produce a 12 page fanzine on any subject to my fancy - I chose the post-Soviet Russian clothing brand Gosha Rubchinksiy. I adore Gosha’s work through all his years being a designer but this past year and a half had been particularly influential to me so I created this to share my admiration for the brand and Gosha himself. I experimented heavily with different styles in similar mediums to really show what I could do with the same tools and how I could combine them together to create certain artwork. I used written skills to explain imagery and the pieces themselves to keep the fanzine engaging through connection of words and images.

Stourbridge Tennis Club - Tennis Camp Advertising I was commissioned to complete a series of posters and banners promoting Stourbridge Tennis Club’s junior coaching camps through the summer and winter of 2017/2018. The posters and banners were used throughout the West Midlands region mainly through flyers being given out at schools, posters posted around schools and clubs and through social media sites. I also designed their junior programme and banner for the club itself, also promoted through clubs and schools.

Mayfly Festival: Music Through the Ages Alternative Posters In this assignment, I had to produce a poster promoting the next Mayfly Festival which was themed “Music Through the Ages”. For these posters, I found through research that I really liked the 60s/70s era because of the vast use of colour but was also very influenced by the punk movement of the 90s with the use of cut-out lettering or “Dada” a style very stylised by Jamie Reid for his work for the Sex Pistols at this time. I combined these styles with experimental print-making using screens to produce a series of outcomes all showing different medias and different compositional styles as a choice for the festival to make.

Bear Cereal - Packaging Project For this assignment, I had to design a back of the Bear cereal box where they educate children through a theme of a letter. I had to design the back of the box and some cards to go inside the box as extras for their entertainment and learning at the most important meal of the day. I used influence from flat pen and line artist Bodil Jane mostly for the illustration as I felt her imagery was very easy for children to understand because it’s simplicity and use of colour.

Brand Identity, Logo Design and Application For clothing company Carya, I created a series of designs and logos to be printed and used on all different mediums including clothing and skateboard decks. I chose a themed illustrative approach in my line style with digital flat colours to create an illustrative identity for the company and their designs. I also printed and embroidered the designs myself.

Google Doodle Project - Raising Awareness for Disability through a Google Logo For this college assignment, I had to promote awareness for issues in today’s world and I chose disability awareness as it should be recognised more and more people need and deserve to be helped. This is where I first really discovered line drawing through Nigel Peake and his use of line and pattern to create imagery. I found a way to incorporate imagery to show the disabilities through the Os and managed to exaggerate the imagery through text used within the pattern.

Commemorative Stamp Series Commemorative Stamp Series For this assignment, I had to create a series of 4 stamps and a first day cover for any chosen theme commemorating Britain - I chose the most popular/iconic British television programmes as that’s one thing Britons really celebrate as we’re known for our fame through Sitcoms like Dr Who, Downton Abbey, Blackadder and Skins. To show this, I used a combination of illustrative styles - I used Egon Schiele’s line illustration style with Cliff Mills’ digital flat colouring and David Carson’s experimental text style to give the series a contemporary touch and to draw interest to the illustration as well as the subject.

Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett Concept Art Characters For this assignment, I had to create a Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett character in scene with a steampunk theme included in the design. After an extensive research sketchbook researching the Victorian Era and Sweeney Todd and everything through fashion, interior design, Victorian history etc. I developed my own concept Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett characters using a line drawing as a base and using photoshop painting tools to finish the design. I made it steampunk through use of uses of leather and metal through Sweeney and the chair and through Mrs Lovett’s whisk arm and use of leather.

Flaming Fires and Fireplaces Magazine Advertisement and Advertising Board I re-designed the advertising board to go outside the shop-front along with their magazine advertisement to go in the local magazine.

Creative Self-Portraits Presented Through Different Mediums For this assignment, I had to create a contemporary self portrait combining a number of creative techniques to portray a deeper meaning. I went with the idea of secrets and portrayed this through the use of embroidery in style of Jose Romussi and collage in style of Jesse Treece. I tried to portray destruction and pain through imagery but showing it through myself and what I hold inside through the shooting eyes and closed mouth.

Deb’s Pantry Flyer Re-Design I was commissioned by Deb to create a new flyer to be used at the bottom of every cake box and to be handed out at every event they cater for and advertise at to expand their audience and promote specially catered food for specific dietary requirements.

Cannock Chase High School Prom Fashion Show Poster I was commissioned to design the Great Gatsby themed fashion show poster promoting the school’s prom as a fundraising event for the school. The poster consisted of a ‘60s theme and was based off the “Great Gatsby” film to imply the theme of the event.

White Zombie Designs Clothing company “White Zombie” commissioned me to create a series of 2 logos for their latest collection of clothing. The logos will be used in production of things like hoodies, t-shirts, hats etc.
