KIDAPPROVED! TAKE ME TO THE SHOW!

The Niswonger is such a thrill. Every show is an adventure filled with new sights and sounds. A couple years ago I went to Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo LIVE and couldn’t believe how REAL the dinosaurs looked. We even were able to go on stage and pet them. I couldn’t believe they were actually controlled by humans! So when I heard that the Niswonger is bringing back Dinosaurs this year . . . you know, not the land ones but the ones that swim in the ocean . . I couldn’t wait to ask Grandma and Grandpa for tickets. Because, of course they say “yes” right away. Mom always has to check her schedule first. Well, its been nice chatting with you. If you see me at a show, I have a secret to tell you about the dog that’s with the statue man outside of the Niswonger.

HEY, GO DO SOME ADULTING! I’M READY FOR SOME FREE TIME.

Okay, adults, I think you are great. Obviously I couldn’t have tied this bow tie without you! But must tell you, I need some time to myself, well, almost by myself. I am making a list of my favorite care takers so that you can enjoy a night out at the Niswonger. I know how happy it makes you because I listen while you are talking to your friends AND I may be peeking in on your social media posts. So I think it’s time for you to check that calendar and get those tickets. You deserve it and SO DO I! This will give me time to play with my little Dinosaur figures that I got at Dinosaur Zoo LIVE! And hey! Don’t forget about my tickets for Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium on Sunday, May 3! The VIP Meet and Greet looks pretty cool too! And many thanks to Jim & Theresa Robideau for sponsoring the NPAC Family Series so our tickets are more affordable!

Van Wert Vision, Ltd.

As the house lights fade down and the stage spots flair up, the sounds of rock and roll with classic sensibilities and progressive nuances permeate the crowd. At first a familiar chord strikes everyone’s attention, then comes a catchy chorus followed by a memorable solo or remarkable moment of improvisation. Such an ear-pleasing arsenal carries into a non-stop evening of precise performance taking fans on a roller coaster ride of electric instrumentation, timeless balladry, unpredictable jamming and the ultimate sing-a-long experience. It’s a position held by a troupe of true musical luminaries who through over five decades in show business have been loaded with more hits than members can count, record sales well into the multi- millions and more drama than a VH1 Behind the Music episode and an E! True Hollywood Story documentary combined. The name is none other than The Guess Who, a group that’s connected with the masses throughout a exultant hit parade spanning fourteen Top 40 hits, including These Eyes, Clap For the Wolfman, Hand Me Down World, No Time, Star Baby and Share the Land. Add in fellow classics and double sided singles like their #1 rock anthem American Woman and No Sugar Tonight, plus Laughing and Undun, and the Canadian bred stateside conquerors are amongst music’s most indelible treasures who are eternally etched within the very fabric of pop culture history.

“You’re going to see an excellent version of the songs and hear exactly how they should sound or be played,” verifies founding member and original drummer/songwriter Garry Peterson.

A NIGHT WITH

JANIS JOPLIN

SATURDAY . SEPTEMBER 28 I 7:30 P

OC $65 / ORL $65/ MC $55/ MRL $55 / BC $45 / BRL $45

Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. From Broadway to Van Wert, now you’re invited to share an evening with the woman and her influences in the musical, A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN. Fueled by such unforgettable songs as Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, Mercedes Benz, Cry Baby and Summertime, a remarkable cast and breakout performances, A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN, written and directed by Randy Johnson, is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock & roll’s greatest legends. That voice—high, husky, earthy, explosive—remains among the most distinctive and galvanizing in pop history. But Janis Joplin didn’t merely possess a great instrument; she threw herself into every syllable, testifying from the very core of her being. She claimed the blues, soul, gospel and rock with unquestionable authority and verve, fearlessly inhabiting psychedelic guitar jams, back-porch roots and everything in between. Her volcanic performances left audiences stunned and speechless, while her sexual magnetism, world-wise demeanor and flamboyant style shattered every stereotype about female artists—and essentially invented the “rock mama” paradigm. CATAPULT SATURDAY . OCTOBER 12 I 7:30 P

OC $40 / ORL $40/ MC $30/ MRL $30 / BC $20 / BRL $20 Catapult is, technically, a shadow dance company. What it really is: a theatrical art form that is an amazingly imaginative combination of dance, story-telling, and sculpture. Founded in 2009, by Adam Battlestein (choreographer, Creative Director and Master Teaching Artist for Pilobolus Dance Theatre for 9 years), Catapult catapulted to fame on Season 8 of America’s Got Talent, earning their way to the finals of the NBC-TV hit show. Catapult is all about the human body and its ability to transform. The talented Catapult dancers work behind a screen to create seemingly impossible dancing shadow silhouettes of shapes from the world around us. You won’t believe your eyes as you watch these incredible dancers become a mountain, a full size elephant, a helicopter, a house with a window and people inside the window. You will never figure out how they do it, and you won’t know what they will make next – you will be surprised and delighted again and again. Audiences of all ages love what appear to be effortless transformations and applaud over and over as more and more unbelievable images appear. Catapult’s “Magic Shadows” show is packed with hundreds of shape transformations, and it is full of humor, emotion, and engaging stories. There are 8 fully realized stories told through music and shadows and 6 short shadow dance videos which play between the live dances – brief moments of poetry or humor which perfectly cleanse the palate and prepare the audience for their next shadow journey. Audiences leave this show dazed and happy, and they will never look at their own shadow the same way again! ENRICH CCS Presenting Sponsor

38 SPECIAL

SUNDAY . OCTOBER 20 I 7:30 P

OC $80 / ORL $75 / MC $70 / MRL $65 / BC $60 / BRL $55

After more than three decades together, 38 SPECIAL continue to bring their signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. And at each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance. Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. With sales in excess of 20 million, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes, Hold On Loosely, Rockin’ Into the Night, Caught Up

in You, Fantasy Girl, If I’d Been the One, Back Where You Belong, Chain Lightnin’, Second Chance, and more – Timeless hits that remain a staple at radio, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen. Guitarist/vocalist DON BARNES says it’s all about maintaining that intensity in their live shows. “We never wanted to be one of those bands that had maybe gotten a little soft or complacent over the years. We’re a team, and it’s always been kind of an unspoken rule that we don’t slack up, we stack up. We go out there every night to win.” It is that steely determination that lives on in the hearts of these ‘Wild-Eyed Southern Boys.’

Since giving up his job as a grocery truck driver in 2002, Tim Hawkins has been establishing himself as one of the most in-demand comedians in the country. With 1 million+ social media followers and 100 sold-out concerts every year, his Jackwagon Crew has grown into a revolution of multi-generational proportions. But don’t take it from us... Tim’s gut-busting comedy show entertains the entire family while doubling down on the funny, a daunting task in an age where the obscene has become routine. His act is 1 part gifted + 2 parts twisted, the only certainty being his on-the-nose observations that expose the ridiculousness of daily life while marveling in its hilarity. The perils of marriage, homeschooling, and growing up in the Midwest may not exemplify the rock star life, but they make for really good punchlines. Sure he’s funny, but fans are often even more amazed at his singing voice and guitar chops. Tim’s hilarious music videos have brought him viral YouTube fame with fan favorites including Sounds of Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Yoga Pants, Aging Rockers, Things You Don’t Say to Your Wife, Cletus Take the Reel, A Homeschool Family, and The Government Can. Still, Tim is no rock star: “It’s not like I have a choice. Comedy is my only life skill.”

“The show is live, dangerous and more than anything else: it rocks!” - Brian May, Queen WE WILL ROCK YOU tells the story of a globalized future without musical instruments. A handful of rock rebels, the Bohemians, fight against the all-powerful Globalsoft company and its boss, the Killer Queen; they fight for freedom, individuality and the rebirth of the age of rock. Scaramouche and Galileo, two young outsiders, cannot come to terms with the bleak conformist reality. They join the Bohemians and embark on the search to find the unlimited power of freedom, love and Rock! The idea for the musical came after a meeting between the actor Robert De Niro with musicians Brian May and Roger Taylor, in Venice in 1996. De Niro’s daughter was a big fan of the Queen and the actor asked if the legends of rock had never thought of creating a musical based on their songs. That was the beginning of everything. Since 2002 over 15 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled by this awe-inspiring production which is based on the songs of Queen with a book by Ben Elton (The Young Ones, Blackadder, Popcorn.) Elton fashioned this hilarious futurist comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and of course, We Will Rock You. WE WILL ROCK YOU reflects the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances and earned the band its pinnacle position in rock history. With Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors and “a band without parallel in the theatre” behind the cast, the audience can expect WE WILL ROCK YOU to rock as fiercely as the best of Queen’s concerts. “Anyway the wind blows…”

BANDSTAND THE BROADWAY MUSICAL THURSDAY . JANUARY 23 I 7:30 P

OC $75 / ORL $70/ MC $65 / MRL $60 / BC $55 / BRL $50

1945. BANDSTAND tells the story of musician Donny Novitski who is about to take on the mission of his life: leading his band of fellow veterans into competition for America’s next swing band sensation. However, complicated relationships, the demands of the competition and the challenging after-effects of war may break

these musicians. This original score is strongly influenced by authentic 1940s swing music, much of which is played onstage by the characters and band members. When Donny meets a beautiful, young singer named Julia, he finds the perfect harmony in words and music that could take this band of brothers all the way to the live radio broadcast finale in New York City. But to succeed, it will require every ounce of talent, stamina and raw nerve that these musicians possess. Directed

and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton), and starring Tony nominee Laura Osnes (Cinderella) and Corey Cott (Newsies), BANDSTAND is the high-stepping musical about love in full swing.

Whitney Houston’s musical legacy is brought to life in this critically acclaimed tribute show described as “mind-blowingly spot on”. Be stunned by the breathtaking vocals of Belinda Davids – a RiSA chart-topping artist in her home country of South Africa - who has performed alongside the likes of Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole and Monica and featured on Fox TV’s ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ and BBC1 TV’s ‘Even Better Than the Real Thing.’ With the accompaniment of a live band, backing vocalists and choreographed dancers, plus state-of-the-art sound, lighting, vision and theatrical effects, this is a beautifully crafted tribute to one of the world’s most revered singers. The two-hour production will fill you with joy, nostalgia and wonderment as it takes you on a heartfelt journey through Houston’s greatest hits including I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know, One Moment in Time, I Have Nothing, Run to You, Didn’t We Almost Have It All, Greatest Love of All, I’m Every Woman, Queen of the Night, Exhale (Shoop Shoop), Million Dollar Bill and more.

“An air tight band with energy-packed execution of a long string of classics. Rather than museum pieces or mere fodder for oldies radio, these songs had all the vitality and punch that they carried 50 years ago.” - Springfield State Journal Register

BRYCE CARLSON

ALL SEATS $10 In the words of Bryce Carlson: To accomplish anything of significance, you first have to not quit. This truth has carried me through two decades of rowing and coaching, nearly a decade of research on human evolution and wild chimpanzees in Uganda, over 150 marathons, and several 100+ mile ultramarathons! In 2010, I qualified and competed in [arguably] the most difficult and competitive ultramarathon in the world: the 153-mile Spartathlon in Greece. But my race ended less than halfway resulting from some medical complications that at least partly resulted from poor preparation. In 2014, I returned stronger, smarter, and completed the course laid out by Pheidippides over 2500 years ago between Athens and Sparta. I learned some incredibly valuable lessons along the way about courage, perseverance, and the nature of human endurance. In 2015, I joined 11 runners, on a physical and intellectual journey as the Research Director and participant in the 3100 mile Race Across USA. I dove in for the adventure, and what transpired only reaffirmed my commitment to a life of personal challenges and growth. Colleagues from Harvard, University of Washington, Hunter College, Grand Valley State University, Purdue, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Boston Children Hospital all jumped on board and it was an incredible success, both personally and professionally. My research assistants and colleagues gathered data on biomechanics, cardiovascular health, metabolism, nutrition, gastrointestinal microbiota, and psychology as the other runners and I completed a marathon a day, 6 days a week, for over 4 months. And that data continues to bear fruit with a number of scientific manuscripts!

Vogue cheers, “It’s a must-see you’ll remember for years to come!” Originally directed by visionary Tony®-winner Diane Paulus and based on the critically-acclaimed Academy Award® winning film, FINDING NEVERLAND tells the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. “We are saying what HE said,” laughs Matt Vee referring to the one and only Neil Diamond. Matt along with cousins Jeff and Tommy Vee, local music scene veterans and sons of the legendary Bobby Vee, join forces with their family and friends as The Killer Vees to celebrate the music from a timeless catalog. With songs like Cracklin’ Rosie, Song Sung Blue, and Sweet Caroline, Neil Diamond sold over 100 million records worldwide with music that became the soundtrack to one generation after another with hits spanning five decades. As a Tin Pan Alley song writer in the mid 60s, he penned songs recorded by everyone from Elvis Presley to Deep Purple and, of course, the Monkee’s classic, I’m A Believer. “This is not a tribute show,” says Tommy Vee. “This is a celebration of an amazing musical icon, one we all love and respect. We have been fans since we were in grade school and first learning our respective instruments and played many of these tunes over the years in various bands. We have recruited an incredible group of singers and players and have gone back to the original records,” he explains, “it is all about the vocals and Matt nails it. It’s a Rockin’ show!”

Here Come the Mummies is an eight-piece funk-rock band of 5000 year-old Egyptian Mummies with a one-track mind. Their “Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave” is sure to get you into them (and possibly vice versa). Since their discovery HCTM has been direct support for P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick; rocked Super Bowl Village; become a regular on The Bob and Tom Show; played massive festivals like Summer Camp, Common Ground, Voodoo Fest, Musikfest, Suwannee Hulaween, and Riverbend; and sold tickets by the thousands across large swaths of North America. Maybe that’s why the ladies (and some dudes) can’t stop losing their minds over these mayhem-inducing mavens of mirth. Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh’s daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-Winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM’s mysterious personas, cunning song-craft, and unrelenting live show will bend your brain, and melt your face. PAUL KEELS THE VOICE OF THE BUCKEYES

PRESENTED BY

THE OHIO STATE ALUMNI CLUB OF VAN WERT & PAULDING COUNTIES SUPPORTING SPONSORS

SUNDAY . APRIL 26 I 3:00 P

ALL SEATS $20

Paul Keels’ booming voice fills rooms and cars with an immaculate and unmistakable beat. His crisp play-calling on radio of Ohio State football and basketball never leaves the listener in doubt. It’s graphic, economical and spot-on. Keels is now inextricably linked with the Buckeyes whose games he’s called for a score of years; through two national titles and three trips to the Final Four. Players and coaches come and go. Yet schools’ longtime play-by play announcers are as recognizable as the teams they cover. Fans think of them as longtime friends, those who share in the joy of victories and commiserate in the misery of defeats. They are forever part of the tapestry, drawing pictures of the familiar and the unfamiliar. Paul penned a book recently, recollecting his years with Ohio State’s football and basketball teams. It’s titled, If these walls could talk. He tells of the coaches he’s covered, some of the big players with whom he interacted and naturally, some of the big moments he witnessed.

“All of us as sports fans have these sporting events, you either attend them, or watch them or listen to them, as something that is entertainment for us, it may be an escape from something else, it’s an accompaniment to the rest of our lives” - Paul Keels NISWONGER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER 419-238-6722 npacvw.org
