APPRECIATIVE

OF THE PAST, EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE!

It has been a pleasure to have been a part of the leadership of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center for the past nine, going on ten years. What a growth we have seen in the operations since our meager opening in 2007. When looking back at where we have come from, it is easy to see how blessed we have been. We as an organization have learned an immense amount about presenting the arts to an ever increasing and excited base of patrons. I feel we have all grown to love and appreciate the arts in an extremely new way, right here in our own back yard! We have welcomed arts patrons from all over the country to our beautiful performing arts center and community. It has added renewed vibrancy to our region. Looking forward, I am confident we will continue on the path of making the Niswonger a top choice for patrons of the arts. Agents, performers, and patrons share how much they enjoy their experience at the Niswonger. This is a tribute to our state-of-the art facility, our excellent staff, volunteers, and you-our patrons. In celebration of Ten Years of Inspiration, we will celebrate with a real “Wow,” a GALA featuring Bernadette Peters with the Boston Pops! Just as it was when we built this arts venue, it is the inspiration of Mr. Scott Niswonger, along with the support of The Van Wert County Foundation and Central Insurance Company that have made it all possible. The Gala will be the event of the decade! I hope you enjoy our entire season. It is filled with a variety of performances and inspirational events which will keep you coming again and again and inviting your friends to enjoy not just a concert, but a “Wow” experience at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio! SUCCESS ROOTED IN VISION

The Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio is a shining example of what happens when passion, vision, and energy collide. This season, we celebrate ten years of life breathing entertainment in this facility. However, the spark that ignited this passion has been burning in our hearts far longer than that. For over 90 years, The Van Wert County Foundation has been tasked with continuing the vision and passions of those who have gone before us. These great visionaries have looked beyond their years into the future of what this community should be. Their passions have varied. Many wanted to provide advanced opportunities for those who would otherwise be unable to obtain higher education. Some made sure that our rich agricultural heritage would continue into future generations. Others had a vision that people like you would come from all around the world to experience the arts right here in our own Van Wert, Ohio. These visionaries gave a lifetime’s worth of hard work to The Foundation so their efforts would continue. We are grateful for many who have and/or continue to contribute financially. We are indebted to those of you who volunteer your time and talents to make sure that all who enter our doors long to come back. We are delighted that you continue to spend your time right here with us at The Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio! Seth Baker Van Wert County Foundation Executive Secretary

TEN YEARS OF SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. We’ve come a long way baby. The doors opened on March 16, 2007 and the first season included big names, patriotic pageantry and cultural artistry. Soon followed Broadway, Jazz and our acclaimed Speaker Series. Ten years later, we boldly present some of the world’s most revered musicians as well as harken back to the beginning to bring back stars who have endeared our audience. You have trusted us with your entertainment dollar and we continue to strive to ensure that each year brings more of what you love to the stage. We invite you to dive in and see them all or choose a few events that appeal to your musical appetite and then perhaps at least one that is outside of your entertainment comfort zone. What you will find is that no matter who you see on this stage, our artists are among the BEST in their respective genre, all because you deserve it.

THE GALA CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF WOW! FEATURING BERNADETTE PETERS AND THE BOSTON POPS ORCHESTRA SATURDAY, APRIL 1 / 8:00 PM

RELEASE DATE: Beginning December 5 OC $250 / ORL $200 / MC $150 / MRL $150 / BC $100 / BRL $100

What better way to celebrate our 10th Anniversary than with America’s most beloved Pop Orchestras of all-time - the Boston Pops along with one of their all-time favorite performers, Bernadette Peters! This optional black-tie event will be filled with excitement and surprises befitting a Gala event of this magnitude. The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra has such a rich American heritage with renowned conductors Arthur Fiedler (1930 – 1979), John Williams (1980 – 1993), and now Keith Lockhart (1995 – present). It is affectionately known as “America’s Orchestra” and has been the most recorded and beloved orchestra in the country. Iconic performers from all over the United States cherish the opportunity to perform with the Boston Pops. For this once in a lifetime performance at the Niswonger in Van Wert, one of the Pops all-time favorite performers will join the orchestra in a fitting tribute to the Niswonger and our ten years of accomplishments. This Tony Award-winning actress has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage, television, and film screen, in concert and on recordings. Bernadette is the perfect iconic performer to team with America’s Orchestra in a night that will live forever in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have a seat in Nisownger’s Saltzgaber Music Hall. A night as special as this could not happen without the support of the three largest contributors to the building of the Niswonger Performing Arts Center of Northwest Ohio: Scott M. Niswonger, The Van Wert County Foundation and Central Mutual Insurance Companies. Ten years ago, these three big players, along with many others, helped make the Niswonger PAC become a reality. Now, they have joined forces once again, along with The Kennfeld Group, to present this night of memories. It promises to be a night like no other. The stars will certainly be out this night. We invite you to join us for one classy night of music, fun, and laughter, as we celebrate Ten Years of Wow! at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Van Wert, Ohio.

REO SPEEDWAGON APR. 29

RELEASE DATE: 1/18/17 OC $35 / ORL $30 / MC $30 / MRL $25/ BC $20 / BRL $20 Over the greater part of the last two decades, David’s artistry has grown to echo off the walls of Carnegie Hall, and vibrate the chandeliers in the White House and in countless halls and churches around the world. His masterful melodies have been burned into critically-acclaimed solo offerings, award-winning Gaither Vocal Band CDs and Gold and Platinum Gaither “Homecoming” collections. It has been a showcase far above the expectations of any ordinary artist. Pushing the boundaries is every artist’s goal, and David’s focus is beyond the ordinary, trusting in that Divine design. Good Friday is the perfect time to showcase the return of David Phelps to the Niswonger stage.

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon is a band where the main constant over the decades is a never-ending desire to give their all to their fans, year in and year out. Formed loosely in the late ‘60s at college in Champaign, IL, REO (named after the precursor to the light truck) rode to gigs in station wagons, hopping from small gigs to even tinier gigs, just to get their name out. It worked, as fans quickly realized there was much more going on here than your average college party band. By the early ‘70s, the band’s unrelenting drive, as well as nonstop touring and recording, jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. It carved a path that was eventually followed by STYX, Kansas, Cheap Trick and more. Platinum albums and freeform FM radio staples such as “Ridin’ The Storm Presenting Sponsor

Out” followed, setting the stage for 1980’s explosive Hi Infidelity. REO rode the top of the charts with a RIAA-certified 22 million albums sold in the U.S. and 40 million around the globe, with a string of gold and platinum records and international hit singles. Even now, fully established with songs on the radio in every city and town they ever set foot in, REO Speedwagon still has that Midwest work ethic. The band has gone on stage and in the studio to work– dozens of albums, thousands of concerts, and countless radio spins. Their eyes have always been on the future and on the road – not a year has gone by where REO Speedwagon didn’t perform live, thrilling fans with hit filled sets. At the center of REO’s desire to keep it rocking for the fans is Kevin Cronin, who looks like he’s found the fountain of youth, along with the secret to penning some of the biggest hits in rock. With bandmates Bruce Hall on bass, keyboardist Neal Doughty, Dave Amato on lead guitar and drummer Bryan Hitt, REO has remained busy since the band celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007. This American Rock Classic will keep you rockin’ with their biggest hits “Keep on Lovin’ You,” “Time for Me to Fly,” “Roll with the Changes,” “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” and more favorites from their 40 million albums sold. What else can we say? They are an American Rock Classic!

GUY & RALNA SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 I 2:00 PM

Since their days on the Lawrence Welk Show, Guy & Ralna has remained one of the most endearing couples still touring and spreading good, wholesome music. Guy and Ralna became an instant sensation, appearing from 1970 to 1982 as the most popular husband and wife team ever to appear on the Show. Although Guy & Ralna continue to perform together, their marriage ended in divorce in 1984. Guy moved to Mississippi in 1990 and became the director of the state offices for his lifelong friend, Senator Trent Lott. Now retired from his job with the U. S. Senate, Guy continues to record, participates in Lawrence Welk Show television specials for PBS, and keeps an active concert schedule, both solo and with Ralna. As for Ralna, she tours from coast-to-coast, performing with symphony orchestras, at civic centers, state fairs, senior expos and in showrooms in Connecticut, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno and Lake Tahoe. She especially enjoyed being the opening act for “Mr. Warmth” Don Rickles, in Las Vegas, and at Merv Griffin’s Resorts International in Atlantic City. She has also performed with Doc Severinson at Phoenix Symphony Hall and with Doc and the Tonight Show Band at the Sun Dome. Ralna has also been a popular guest performer in Branson, Missouri. Their fans love them and you will too as you relive those memorable moments on the Welk Show. Community Concert Series Presenting Sponsor

DOC SEVERINSEN & HIS BIG BAND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 I 7:30 PM

“Heeeeere’s Johnny!” That lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the landmark of late night television for three decades. The ‘Johnny’ was Johnny Carson, the announcer was Ed McMahon and the bandleader was Doc Severinsen. Beginning in October 1962, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson ruled the night air for thirty years. On May 22, 1992, it came to an end. Within a week of the final telecast, Doc Severinsen and His Big Band were on the road and audiences across America love and respect Doc and his big band to this day. Not just because he shared their living room with them for so many years, but because of Doc’s love of the Big Band repertoire. His musicianship keeps this iconic American music fresh to this day. Their repertoire includes Ellington and Basie standards, pop, jazz, ballads, big band classics and, of course, The Tonight Show theme. Severinsen can still blow hard with his horn, and hit the high notes, a result of his continued commitment to the practice studio and the refinement of his craft. But as a band leader, Doc continues to surround himself with the best in the business, and he’s only too happy to give them a turn in the spotlight.

SAM QUINONES: OPIUM EPIDEMIC TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 I 7:30 PM Sam Quinones is a Los Angeles-based freelance journalist and author of three books of narrative nonfiction. His latest book is Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic (Bloomsbury, 2015), for which he traveled across the United States. As Opiate addiction and subsequent heroin use sweep across the nation, suburban and small town America are left trying to make sense of it and searching for solutions. Former L.A. Times reporter Sam Quinones is a veteran journalist who covered immigration, gangs, drug trafficking, the border and Mexico, where he lived and wrote for 10 years. His latest book, Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic, explores just what led to this current drug crisis. Quinones details heroin’s path through the heartland, as it moved through Columbus and Portsmouth, Ohio, as well as a glimpse into the lives of individuals and families affected by opiate addiction. An hour long presentation by Quinones will be followed by a panel comprised of local officials who will explore the opiate epidemic from a local perspective. The panel will discuss local law enforcement efforts, prosecution of drug offenses, and treatment efforts. There will be an opportunity for those in attendance to pose questions to the panel. COMMUNITYREAD

Back by very popular demand is the NISWONGER COMMUNITY BOOK READ. Last year’s read, UNBROKEN by Laura Hildenbrand, was an overwhelming success, not simply measured on the number of readers, but rather the quality of the impact of the read on those who participated. For the 2016-17 Season, THE ENERGY BUS and TRAINING CAMP by Jon Gordon have been selected. Both books offer a multitude of self-help tips that may be applied in your daily life, at home, work, or play to influence your environment in a positive way. The Niswonger collaborates with The Brumback Library for the Community Book Read. The library offers these books at the Van Wert location and its branches. The books are available to all registered library patrons who have a valid library card. The books are also available at most book stores as well as available for download. The Community Read culminates with the author, Jon Gordon, gracing the Niswonger stage on Sunday, October 2 at 7:00 PM. Jon’s presentation along with panel discussion will bring a rich vibrancy to the words read in the books. Life application tools that inspire the best in ourselves go the distance to impacting the world in which we live. Be Engaged. Be “Wowed” by the transformational power of these two books.
