rizona in August presents several challenges when it comes to the heat, as we all know. We’re talking about some of Mother Nature’s ideas for keeping cool in “Beat the Heat”, plus how to properly store marijuana products in this weather—and even how to make tasty cooling treats to help our cats and dogs stay cool. Our major focus this month is on biological dentistry. Learn about the benefits of whole-body dentistry and hear from several local dentists and resources who can help you make the best choice for the health of your mouth—and, subsequently, the rest of your body. And yes, you can safely get dental work done during this crazy time. Both Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman (page 16) and Dr. Elahe Wissinger (page 18) tell us how they’re putting the safety of patients and staff first—especially during such a Holly Baker, publisher critical time. We wanted to have a little fun this summer, so last month Natural Awakenings Tucson started the “Summer in Tucson” Photo Challenge. We had many great submissions from locals who shared with us what their summer in Tucson looks like. The top five photos are absolutely breathtaking, and we need your help to pick the winner. Check out the photo finalists and get more details on voting on page 11. Calling all local businesses! Would you like to become a distribution point for Natural Awakenings magazines? Past Life Regressions via Zoom

I

n this time of dramatic changes, every aspect of life is affected. Kryste Andrews is now facilitating Past Life Regressions online via Zoom. “Past Life Regressions continually surprise and inspire me,” says Andrews. “Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique sessions on Zoom are proving to be a safe experience while continuing to enlighten,” says Andrews. “Requests for Past Life Regressions have accelerated as individuals are finding time to ask more questions and look inward for answers. More people understand that the outcome of a regression is guided by the client’s Higher Power. In the Theta state, information is Kryste Andrews revealed from the inside out—ultimate independence.” Andrews has seen Past Life sessions with outcomes including: revealing aspects of oneself that were sensed but unable to be validated; answering lingering questions about a perplexing relationship; pointing one toward their destiny; unraveling mysteries; taking clients to ancient places and events; leading clients to the future; uncovering one’s life purpose; removing blocks toward personal growth; transporting clients to other planets/galaxies; aiding in achieving one’s perfect body weight; breaking unwanted habits; and eliminating addictions. Also ask Andrews about participation in her Future Life Progressions project. For more information, call 201-759-6845, email KrysteAndrews@gmail.com or visit KrysteAndrews.com. See ad, page 10.

Explore the Past with Book Written from Hypnosis Experience

I

n the book Legacy: Book One, Discovery, a portal has opened, revealing life on earth 25,000 years ago. The authors Rick Chavez and Kryste Andrews stepped through this portal during a hypnosis session. It wasn’t planned. Chavez and Andrews are regular people, not gurus, scientists or aliens posing as humans. They simply landed in what we call the Alps and met their ancient ancestors.

Adventures beyond the imagination were observed over two years of subsequent remote viewing/traveling in time. In the book, details about primitive life are shared in story form—in-depth information not accessible to archaeologists or through DNA testing. Discovery is more than an intimate portrayal of a prehistoric family; it proves that humans have existed in harmony with each other, respected all life forms and honored the Spirit world. It demonstrates active, simple access to time and space beyond the material world. “The time is now for us to blow open our boundaries of time and place. Answers are waiting to be embraced,” says Andrews. “Focus on the unseen. So much more is happening than what we see, hear and touch in everyday life.” For more information or to purchase the book, call 201-759-6845 or visit LegacyOfMahayla.com. 8

Online Self-Realization Fellowship Meetings

Integration Consultation with Lisannette Adelaida Ruiz

ue to COVID-19, SelfRealization Fellowship is offering meditations throughout each day, as well as weekly lectures, meditation and scriptural study of the Bhagavad Gita and Second Coming of Christ, online at SRFOnlineMeditation.org. In addition, for the first time, the Annual Worldwide Convocation—a week-long series of lectures, films, meditations and kirtans attended by devotees from around the world—will be held online at Yogananda.org. According to Paramahansa Yogananda, known as “The Father of Yoga in the West”, “Meditating together increases the degree of self-realization of each member of the group by the law of invisible vibratory exchange of group magnetism.” The Tucson Meditation Group (TMG) is made up of members and friends of Self-Realization Fellowship, a worldwide nonprofit religious organization with International Headquarters in Los Angeles, California. TMG was founded in 1975 and normally holds meditations, Sunday Services, commemorative meditations (with 3-, 6- and 8-hour meditations throughout the year), an annual retreat and a “Lessons Study Group”. TMG welcomes all to attend the online meditation services and join in deepening meditations and spiritual practice.

isannette Adelaida Ruiz, an Integration Facilitator at Strategic Intuition Consulting, is now taking clients who are ready to embark on the work of integrating peak experiences—especially those related to psychedelic journeys. Services are currently offered virtually, and coming in the fall, physically-distanced, in-person meetings will be held at their outdoor office. Ruiz has been in business for two years now and all clients have come from word of mouth and referral up until now. Ruiz is seeking to engage with a wider audience to be able to do the work they feel called to do full-time. With all the new research being published on the effects of Psilocybin, Ayahuasca and MDMA on mental health outcomes, more and more people are becoming interested in experimenting with these medicines for themselves. “While entheogens are mostly extremely safe to use, if you’ve never used them before, figuring out how to prepare your mind, body, spirit and space can be tricky,” explains Ruiz. “I offer my time and knowledge to support you in getting the most out of your experience as safely as possible, and then integrating the outcomes of that experience in a way that can help you realize small changes that lead to big transformations in your ordinary state of consciousness.” They are extending an invitation to those that are looking to get the most out of their entheogenic experiences. Each session is custom tailored to the voyager’s needs, pulling inspiration from long established practices that have evolved out of many past spiritual teachers’ own personal enlightenment and reintegration journey.

DENTISTRY Biological Dentists Get to the Root Causes

W

by Linda Sechrist

hile the majority of individuals may consider oral health as separate from overall health, the mouth and body are very much connected. Until the late 1970s, this was rarely acknowledged outside a circle of dental professionals, physicians and allied researchers involved in organizations such as the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine, The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and the Holistic Dental Association. Dentists associated with these groups favor the use of preventive measures, a minimally invasive approach to dentistry and biocompatibility testing for all materi-

als used in oral health procedures. Their individualized methodology and systemic health method of addressing the root causes frequently includes nutrition and lifestyle, providing patients with a less-toxic and safe experience for their overall health. An important newcomer to this area is the myofunctional treatment system used in orthodontics for children 5 to 15 years old. Research in this field now points to the real causes for crooked teeth and incorrect jaw development—mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking (known as incorrect

WHOLE-BODY

Jean Marie Nordin, DDS, co-owner of Groton Wellness, in Groton, Massachusetts, added pediatric orthodontics to her practice after learning about early innovative interventions from her mentor, James Bronson, DDS, of Bronson Family Dentistry, in McLean, Virginia. “Our program for children involves a comprehensive evaluation on the first visit. We look at breathing habits, the way their tongue swallows and the function of the muscles. In medicine, we believe that form follows function; therefore, we observe what muscles around the mouth actually do when the individual swallows. It is really the way you breathe and swallow, as well as how the muscles work, that plays a significant role in where teeth end up and line up,” explains Nordin, who identifies problems in patients between 2 and 5 years old. “We can start them on a removable Myobrace mouthpiece that can be worn at night and an hour during the day. The mouthpiece begins to change the way the tongue works, waking it up and strengthening it. If a child is born with the physiological problem of a tongue-tie that can’t swallow properly or get up onto the palate, that tongue will never expand the palate like it’s supposed to,” she clarifies. For chronic mouth-breathers, the face grows long and narrow, which in the long term can cause cardiovascular disease. In the short term, it can cause anxiety, because the nitric oxide receptors located in the nose signal arteries and veins to relax. “A cardiologist knows about this phenomenon,” says Nordin, who notes that the dysfunction can be unwound before a child turns 9. While early interceptive myofunctional orthodontic treatment methods such as Myobrace appliances have proven effective for children, there’s also good news for adults that suffer from breathing problems which cause sleep apnea, says Nordin, who employs a myofunctional therapist. Orofacial myofunctional therapy is neuromuscular reeducation of the oral facial muscles via a series of exercises that work with the muscles of the lips, tongue, cheeks and other parts of the face.

Early interventions beyond conventional solutions

Early intervention and role modeling

“Parents can begin playing a pivotal role in how their children care for their teeth, as well as how they feel and behave in the dentist’s office, as early as age 1. I encourage every mother to bring their child to an appointment. They can hold the child in their lap so they can watch me caring for mom’s teeth. Generally, by the time they are alone in my chair, they aren’t frightened,” advises Pentti Nupponen, a doctor of dental medicine and owner of the Halifax Center for Holistic & Cosmetic Dentistry, in Halifax, Pennsylvania. Chris Kammer, a doctor of dental surgery and owner of Gums of Steel Oral Hygiene Transformation, in Middleton, Wisconsin, also suggests early interceptive treatments for young children. “Early treatments with removable appliances which expand the arch in the roof dome, influence bone growth and make room for incoming teeth can be performed by general dentists,” says Kammer, who notes that a proper diet may help prevent crowding of teeth, as well as malocclusion, or misalignment, of upper and lower teeth.

Gum and heart disease

Doctors practicing functional medicine are more likely to refer patients to biological and holistic dentists. Cardiologists are particularly aware of a 2014 American Journal of Preventive Medicine study in which researchers looked at individuals with gum and heart disease. Individuals that received adequate care for gum disease had 10 to 40 percent lower cardiovascular care costs than those who didn’t get proper oral care. Another study revealed that gum disease increases an individual’s risk of heart disease by approximately 20 percent. Given such evidence, the American Dental Association and American Heart Association have acknowledged the relationship between the two diseases. By neglecting important ongoing research regarding new and old dental practices, as well as orthodontics, mainstream media has largely left the public in the dark regarding problems associated with root canals, mercury amalgam fillings and some dental implants.

Root canals, tooth extractions and gum disease

Iveta Iontcheva-Barehmi, owner of Boston Dental Wellness, in Brookline, Massachusetts, takes a holistic and biological approach to dentistry founded on the philosophy that everything within the whole body is connected. “Teeth are related to organs, tissues and glands along the body’s meridians, energy channels through which the life force flows,” says the integrative periodontist, who prefers extracting teeth when necessary and using zirconium implants rather than performing a root canal. Iontcheva-Barehmi explains, “It’s logical that the connection between the meridians and teeth can indicate an individual’s overall health and wellness. Tooth extractions protect patients from tooth-related disease and systemic infections that can be harmful to overall health. A failing root canal is a chronic abscess around the root of the tooth. It has a direct connection with the bloodstream and disseminates infection through the whole body. This is the reason why holistic dentists recommend extractions.” August 2020

She believes the best research on this was done by Weston Price, a Canadian dentist and pioneering nutritionist.

To treat gum disease, Amparo David, DMD, owner of Dentistry by Dr. David and the founder of the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Center of New England, in Bolton, Massachusetts, refers patients to the periodontist she keeps on staff. “I can tell that a patient has internal inflammation by looking at the gums and tongue. Gum disease has been linked to health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and premature births or low-birth weight babies,” says David, whose preventive and healing suggestions for healthy gums includes chewable oral probiotics, daily coconut oil pulling, consisting of swishing a tablespoon of oil in the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes to reduce harmful bacteria there and on the teeth. She also recommends flossing with an electric toothbrush and a Waterpik. “I suggest adding one or two drops of tea tree oil and iodine to the water in the pick,” notes David, who urges patients to eat less sugar and carbohydrates and more vegetables, proteins and fruits. “We treat gums with ozone after a deep cleaning because it kills bacteria on contact. Patients maintain healthier gums using ozonated oils twice a day and by using a good toothpaste with no glycerine or fluoride,” says David, who notes that temporomandibular mandibular joint (TMJ) problems are tied to sleep disorders. “Many adolescents have TMJ problems, and sometimes experience this after extraction or retraction orthodontics.” Despite the slow trickle of related information to the public and the lack of acknowledgement by the majority of dental professionals, these new philosophies and biological dental protocols are definitely improving overall health and wellness. According to the IAOMT, a dentist that chooses to put biocompatibility testing first can look forward to practicing effective dentistry while knowing that patients are being provided with the safest experience for their overall health. Removing Toxic Heavy Metals from the Body

M

ost of us have had fillings in our teeth that contain mercury and other toxins that are or were impacting our health since the dental procedures. Additionally, we have accumulations of toxins through our food, air and water impacting our organs, plus molds, pesticides, environmental and workplace exposures that finally add up to us being pretty unwell. The chronic build-up of heavy metals in the body can lead to a variety of health problems. Poisonous or nonessential metals such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and aluminum (Al) have been associated with pathologies in the nervous, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, gastrointestinal and immunological systems as well as renal dysfunction, anemia, liver problems, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, nutritional trace elements can be toxic at concentrations outside their physiological range. Excessive levels of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and zinc have been associated with conditions such as degenerative brain diseases, oxidative damage and heart problems. Thus, it is important to regulate essential minerals while limiting toxic metal build-up in the body, and a means of clearing toxic or excess metals from the body is needed. Once heavy metal exposure has been determined through testing, chelation therapy has been proposed for removing poisonous metals such as Pb, Hg, Cd, and Al, as well as reducing abnormal accumulations of trace nutrients such as Fe, Cu, and Zn. Chelation therapy employs anionic chelating agents such as ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to bind heavy metal cations found in the blood. Once EDTA bound, these metals can be removed through the kidneys. There is evidence that EDTA chelation benefits patients by removing toxic and trace elements from diseased organs and blood vessel walls. Those who think they may have a heavy metal problem should note: numbness and tingling in hands/feet; twitching or tremors in face or other muscles; excessive sweating of hands and feet; jumpy, jittery, nervousness; unexplained chest pains; tachycardia or increased heart rate; unexplained rashes or skin irritations; excessive itching; bloated feeling most of the time; or frequent or recurring heartburn. Dr. DeeAnn Saber and Zach Saber practice at Transformational Medicine, where they are expanding services to include heavy metal testing and IV chelation therapy. Connect at 520-209-1755. Potential Oral Health Threats in Toothpaste

T

here are so many benefits of good oral hygiene—everything from the obvious of reduced tooth decay, fresh breath and better gum health, to potentially lowering the chance of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes and achieving healthier pregnancies. Overall, good oral care results in a healthier mouth and a healthier body. Interestingly, most commercial brands of toothpaste include a health “poison” warning. These are a few of the ingredients found in most commercial brands that should be avoided to better our oral hygiene: • Sodium lauryl sulfate – This shampoo is a harsh chemical that is appropriate for our heads, but not for our mouths. • Fluoride – The use of fluoride in toothpaste is at best a controversial issue with heated opinions on both sides of the argument. For certain, fluoride is a harsh chemical that will actually eat through glass and can cause etching to the enamel of the teeth. The result could be sensitive teeth that may require a numbing type toothpaste to avoid severe pain while eating and drinking. • Sodium hydroxide – This is used to create an alkaline pH and to dissolve food particles between the teeth. The same chemical is also used to remove skin from dead animals in a laboratory setting. • Waxing agents – Used like car wax or polish to whiten teeth. Mack Atkinson of Whole Body Nutrition can help clients find toothpastes free from harmful chemicals and safe for the family. Connect at 520-744-2566, Omi1World@aol.com or HerbalWholeFoods.com. Other more subtle conditions may include headaches, jitters and general discomfort that many healthcare practitioners may miss when treating in isolation or addressing the symptoms rather than the cause. Biological dentistry purposefully combines the mind and body as a comprehensive and inclusive system. As one of

the most important gateways to our body’s overall health, a biological dentist expands the practice of dentistry to understand and treat the interactions between the two, in order to support them as one. Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman is one of Tucson’s premier biological dentists and several of her patients travel from other parts of the state and country to receive this type of care. As the owner and founder of Tucson Biological Dentistry, she focuses on comprehensive dental health through identifying and addressing areas of potential disease, toxicity and chronic health issues caused by current or prior dental care. A primary reason for Krizman’s passion to heal through this specialty came from her father’s experience with oral illness when she was young. After removing amalgam fillings and previous root canals, she remembers his health improved greatly. In addition to seeing a turn for the better in him, she decided to pursue a profession in healthcare where she could spend more than five minutes with patients in order to truly understand underlying issues and the full story of health. She attended the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, where she received her DMD. Krizman also has her master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Environmental and Occupational Health from the University of Arizona College of Public Health. Integrated medical degrees and specialized training directly contribute to Krizman’s ability to view the systems within the body as a constant interface of cause and effect. As such, she conducts biocompatibility tests for her patients to determine whether a material will be biologically compatible with their body’s unique chemistry. These assessments allow her to identify types of mercury from amalgam fillings, existence of other toxic metals and overall mineral and vitamin deficiencies that are required for healing and long-term health. Krizman’s care and understanding is evident in each personalized touch throughout her office. For those who are uncomfortable with dental appointments and procedures, patients have access to several antianxiety methods including Buzzies/Touch Points, CBD oils, melatonin and more. Many

of her patients are unable to withstand typical pain medications and antibiotics, so she has several alternative options for sensitivities to various chemical treatments that are frequently used in other offices. A clear goal of Tucson Biological Dentistry is to address the harmful nature of bacteria and its ability to spread and permeate the air and water, thereby negatively affecting the patients and their procedures. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental water should not have more than 200 cfu/ml of aerobic, mesophilic, heterotrophic bacteria, and according to the ADA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s conclusion, maximum contamination of dental treatment water should be less than 500 cfu/ml. In Krizman’s office, ozonated water is generated daily and is the only water used in the lines. Her water currently tests with no bacteria at all. Her team also uses ozonated water and gas in the office, which has been shown to increase the effectiveness of the immune system and stimulate white blood cells—ultimately helping to prevent infections and immune deficiencies by destroying fungi, bacteria and viruses. Various air purifiers are used in the office to help alleviate airborne bacteria and viruses. Krizman’s office stayed open during the last few months since the breakout of COVID-19. “We are an essential service to many,” she says. “My patients are like family to me.” Most of the patients continued to

visit because they knew that the environment was safe, and the team’s objective has always been to keep the office free of viruses and other harmful material. Ultimately, Krizman believes that dentistry will change progressively since the advent of the coronavirus. She suggests that we may see more dental care professionals concerned about the spread of other types of infection, in addition to the consequences of stress and their effect on patients’ longterm health. Although most offices maintain high standards of care and safety, some may consider additional processes to minimize harmful materials even more and provide alternatives to current standards of care.

Krizman suggests that patients who may be looking for a new care provider consider those that have air purifiers used during dental procedures, offices that monitor bacteria in their dental units, closed bays so that air cannot travel between operatories, absence of carpeted rooms to prevent germs and bacteria that sticks to cloth—and finally, to stay away from amalgam fillings. Regardless of personal condition or sensitivities, Krizman’s patience, specialized education and knowledge allows patients to make the best decisions based on experience and a wide array of scientific resources. She may help by identifying possible physical causes, chemical interactions, emotional connections and other considerations that could be directly affecting health. Either way, her patience, empathy and true care for patients and staff will put anyone at ease, and help to determine the best course of action for current and future oral and full-body health. Lasers can be used in dentistry to perform a number of dental procedures that have typically been done with other tools such a loud drills and shots. Because they are able to be so precise, patients feel less pain and mouths heal more quickly. Wissinger is trained in techniques with both new lasers, the Waterlase iPlus and the Epic X.

Waterlase iPlus Importantly, the all-tissue Waterlase iPlus dental laser creates 98 percent less aerosol than traditional dental hand-pieces, meeting the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the American Dental Association’s recommendation of reducing aerosol production to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission, according to Wissinger. This means dental care can be even safer for procedures needed during the continuing pandemic. The award-winning Waterlase laser means less pain, fewer shots and faster recovery. It helps to desensitize teeth that are hot and cold sensitive and can perform periodontal surgeries non-invasively, therefore promoting quicker healing time with proven results. It is a safe and gentle alternative to

traditional dental tools. Using laser energy and water spray, the Waterlase can perform many procedures without a shot or a drill. The Waterlase is virtually painless, using minimal anesthetic (and in some cases none) or drills to perform many routine dental procedures. The Waterlase combines water, air and laser energy for safe use on human tissue in the mouth. “Our teeth are partially made up of water and when the laser makes contact with the tooth, it excites the water molecules to cut through the tooth,” explains Wissinger. “Since the laser continuously sprays out water, it keeps the

tooth hydrated, preventing heat and giving you a virtually pain-free experience.” Waterlase is gentle enough that Wissinger can complete most of a patient’s dental needs in a single visit. Plus, in some cases, she can save them the hassle of going to a specialist or scheduling multiple dental visits. The Waterlase is cleared for numerous dental applications that can be performed on both pediatric and adult patients. “One of its greatest strengths is how precise it is. Conventional dental drills rely on removing large amounts of tooth to get the job done, and the constant grinding and spinning of a drill bur can cause heat, pain and microscopic cracks, which could possibly lead to future infections underneath the filling,” explains Wissinger. “The Waterlase, on the other hand, removes very precise amounts of tooth, without damaging or cracking the rest of the tooth. Because it is so precise, patients will rarely need anesthetic.” Waterlase also has the potential to reduce the risk of cross contamination as it works without contact to the tooth. Wissinger has been trained to operate the Waterlase with single-use, disposable tips, so patients don’t have to worry about a tool that might have been in someone else’s mouth.

Epic X Another innovative laser used at E Dental Solutions is the softtissue Epic X—the ultimate diode laser in reliability and effectiveness. It provides numerous surgical and periodontal capabilities such as sulcular debridement, reduction of subgingival bacterial loads, inflammation control and hemostasis (stop bleeding). Other applications of the Epic X laser include: better sealants, comfortable scaling and root planning, canker sore treatment, cold sore treatment, accelerated teeth whitening and comfortable gingival curettage. For better sealants, the Epic X laser light disinfects the grooves and pits to prevent contamination, which aids in sealant success. Laser light also helps decontaminate periodontal pockets, decreasing the number of harmful pathogens and remov-

ing diseased tissue. Eliminating necrotic surfaces on roots provides a more receptive surface for tissue reattachment. Canker sores and cold sores are healed rapidly and anti-inflammatory effects are achieved with bio-stimulation. The laser tip never comes in direct contact with the target tissue, which means more comfort to the patient. Pain relief is immediate and wounds heal almost overnight.

For accelerated teeth whitening, the Epic X laser photons excite a photochemical activator that increases the enamel response to hydrogen peroxide. Results can be achieved in 20 minutes. “It’s the perfect reward after a hygiene appointment,” says Wissinger. Aside from laser-based dental procedures, E Dental Solutions also offers services including: crowns and bridges, dentures, dental implants, metal-free partials, mercury-free fillings, porcelain inlays/onlays, digital x-rays, snore guards, sleep apnea appliances and dental hygiene. “At this difficult time, our mission now more than ever reflects our commitment to improve our patients’ quality of life through education, prevention and the best quality of dental care in the safest way possible,” says Wissinger.

Mustafa Santiago Ali on Healing America Through Social Justice

M

by Sandra Yeyati

ustafa Santiago Ali has dedicated his career to fighting for environmental justice, public health, resource equity and political empowerment to uplift the most vulnerable communities in America. For 24 years, he served at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is currently vice president of environmental justice, climate and community revitalization for the National Wildlife Federation. He is a renowned public speaker and has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, VICE TV, Black Entertainment Television, Democracy Now! and other networks.

Does the Black Lives Matter movement feel different than other moments in our history?

Yes. This is a transformational moment. So many different types of folks are coming together in large numbers, not just in our country, but across the planet, saying that change has to happen and we have to eliminate systemic racism and discrimination. They want the 21st century to look like the 21st century, and not something from the 1950s or the 1940s or even the 1960s.

How can we keep the momentum going?

By bringing all kinds of different folks together, building authentic coalitions that are rooted in change, harvesting the energy of this moment and making sure that the right types of legislation—whether at the federal, state, county or local level—are reflective of

what people are asking for. Then we focus on getting engaged in the civic process—voting. Dr. King said, “I cannot pass legislation to make you love me, but I can pass legislation to stop you from lynching me.” When we fast forward that to today, we can pass legislation that addresses social ills, disparities and other egregious types of behaviors. We can also make sure that our organizations are representative of what America looks like—in our hiring practices and on our boards—and make sure that our philanthropic organizations are moving in the right direction where they are helping to fund and support folks who are doing this transformative work. It really is a holistic set of actions.

How do you remain hopeful in light of America’s turbulent history?

I see many artists and entertainers who are getting engaged in an effective way, and they have the ability to reach so many folks. Even more critical are the thousands upon thousands of incredible young leaders who are pushing, willing to put their bodies on the line, creating their own organizations and investing their time to make real change happen. I see people at the local and state level changing laws that have been entrenched for decades. I see organizations that would not normally see themselves in these types of conversations or actions saying, “You are right. I apologize for not being here sooner,

but we’re going to do everything we can now to stand in solidarity with this change that’s happening.” My hope is anchored in the fact that people are already doing the work and we’re seeing fruits from the seeds that people planted sometimes hundreds of years ago, but definitely decades ago.

What kind of justice are you fighting for?

We’re fighting for housing, transportation, economic and public health justice, and of course, the environment.

Which vulnerable communities are you fighting for?

I fight for communities of color. I fight for lower-wealth white communities. I fight for indigenous brothers and sisters. And I fight for the planet. I know that disproportionately, these are the communities that are often unseen and unheard, and I know if we can give voice to those communities, then it will benefit everyone. Social justice gives us the opportunity to make America whole—to be stronger and better, as we become anchored in real justice. We have to be focused on moving our most vulnerable communities from surviving to thriving.

What is your contribution to the National Wildlife Federation? I sat down with President Collin O’Mara to have real conversations about what a 21stcentury organization and their 6 million members would look like. I thought that if I could get 10 or 20 percent of those members to embrace environmental justice and to stand in solidarity with folks, then that could help the movement and make real change happen. The National Wildlife Federation board has just approved a full environmental justice analysis of all of its programs, policies, activities and budgeting decisions. No other organization in our country does that, and it sends a clear message to all the other organizations that are out there that these are the types of things you have to do to be a 21st-century organization. HEALING WATERS Hot Baths Rejuvenate Body and Mind by Marlaina Donato

own to our very cells, water is the foundation of life. In the ancient Greco-Roman world, bathing in hot mineral springs and cool saltwater was a common ritual for better health, and spaces dedicated to baths were considered sacred. Stepping into a warm tub harkens back to the safety of the womb while offering abundant health benefits. Opting for a bath instead of a shower can not only help minimize

headaches, insomnia, menstrual cramps, depression and chronic pain, but soothe a burnt-out nervous system. It can also enliven stagnant blood and lymphatic fluids, enabling metabolic waste to be carried out of the body through perspiration. “Hydrotherapy is used in many natural health systems for a wide variety of ailments from inflammation to nervous system dysfunction and skin conditions. or not, there are many ways you can apply these traditional practices to your own self-care routine,” says Marlene Adelmann, herbalist and founder of the Herbal Academy, in Bedford, Massachusetts. Whether we step into a full-body tub or a foot basin, water is a balm for the modern spirit bogged down by information overload and world events. “Taking time away in the sanctuary of warm water allows us to slip into a different state of mind and to release the energetic armor we defend ourselves with, as well as recuperate and heal internally,” says Kiva Rose Hardin, herbalist and co-editor of Plant Healer magazine, in New Mexico.

Insulin Sensitivity, Pain and Depression A good bath can lower chronic systemic inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. It can also impact how the body uses insulin. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology shows that immersion in hot water counters low-grade inflammation and increases glucose metabolism in individuals unable to exercise. Hot baths relax muscles by promoting blood circulation through the tissues and prompting the nervous system into a calming parasympathetic mode. Coldwater soaks—preferably in the morning— provide perks that include boosting immunity and increasing depression-zapping endorphins such as dopamine.

A Handful of Nature The skin is our largest organ, and what we put into the bath affects us from the outside-in. Bentonite clay for detoxing and Dead Sea salts for pain are great choices. Studies going back to the 1990s show significant, lasting effects of Dead Sea salts on those with osteoarthritis of the knee, as well as rheumatoid arthritis. Fortifying the bath with Epsom salts, evaporated sea salt or Himalayan pink salt is highly beneficial. “Himala-

yan salt has 84 valuable trace minerals, including potassium, magnesium and sodium. It draws out toxins, cleanses the skin and helps cleanse the body energetically,” says Hellen Yuan, founder of the bath product company Hellen, in Brooklyn. Adding bundles of fresh or dried herbs or snipping them into sachets can strengthen immune response and provide a welcome antidote to work-related stress. “Aromatic herbs and essential oils are inhaled through our olfactory system and make a beeline to our brains, signaling that it’s time to relax or feel energized,” says Adelmann, who emphasizes practical common sense. “Although flowers and leaves floating in the tub make for lovely social media posts, most household plumbing cannot handle big, bulky plant material. The simplest way to add herbs to a bath is by making a super-concentrated tea.” Hardin concurs, recommending fresh or dried lavender, flowering goldenrod tops, holy basil leaves (tulsi, Ocimum tenuiflorum) or calendula blossoms.

Sacred Waters Baths are good medicine for both genders. “Men carry so much stress in their bodies and typically hold in a lot of tension. A good bath brew eases the muscles and replenishes the mind and soul,” says Yuan. Bathing can be the ultimate sacred offering to the body. From her wood-fired outdoor tub at the edge of a starlit mesa, Hardin advises, “Efforts need not be expensive or time-consuming. Just focused intent will inherently return a sufficient degree of sensuality, magic and beauty to the bath.”

Berry Delicious Basil isn’t just a culinary herb—it improves digestion, delivers anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants, strengthens the immune system and helps to detoxify the liver. It’s perfect for this summertime frozen snack.

Place the coconut oil in a pan over low heat. Stir until melted and set aside. Place the blackberries, raspberries and basil leaves into a mixer and blend. Add the melted coconut oil into the mixer and blend ingredients together. Place a silicone ice cube mold on a cookie sheet for support. The smaller the cavities, the better. Blueberries aren’t the only healthy berries. Blackberries are full of vitamin C, high in fiber, manganese and antioxidants, are a good source of vitamin K and offer antibacterial and anti-inflammatory attributes. Coconut oil provides vitamins and minerals, is antibacterial, antiviral and has antifungal properties, making it a good choice for yeasty dogs. It also aids in digestion, although too much of a good thing can cause diarrhea. Berries are a great treat for pets. BEAT THE HEAT

A

by J. Garnet

rizona is known for being hot, and in the eyes of people across the country it’s the place to be in the winter because the temperatures are more moderate than most of the country. This is why the population of the state increases dramatically in the winter months. But what about the summer? Retirees pack up and leave their winter escape when the heat is turned up. College students pack up at the end of the semester and head home, usually before the thermometer hits 100 degrees. So what about the locals—the people who live here all year? They endure some of the warmest weather in the country. Thankfully, many Arizonans have learned coping mechanisms to deal with the extreme heat. There are some methods, however, that are not as mainstream as others. A glass of cold water, a dip in the pool or hunkering down inside with the air conditioner are common ways to beat 26

the heat. Some people have been seen using an umbrella to keep the sun off of them while walking, some are sporting large-brimmed hats and of course there’s always sitting under a large shade tree to help beat the heat. There are even products on the market with little misters and a fan to wear around the neck. Staying cool in the Arizona summer could be considered necessary in order to have the best quality of life. Heat can have adverse reactions to the human body and health. Extended exposure to extreme temperatures can cause heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps. In severe cases, it may even cause death. When exposed to high temperatures, the human body needs to work harder to maintain a healthy internal temperature. The heart rate increases in order to get more blood to the skin, sweat glands work overtime and respiration increases as the body tries to rid itself of

too much internal heat. Because the body is working hard to stay cool, there are certain things that occur. Increased agitation, loss of focus, lack of concentration, lethargy and fatigue are just a few of the symptoms of getting too much heat. During the steamy months of summer, some people say that it is Mother Nature’s wrath, however, she also provides many natural ways to cool down. Staying out of direct sunlight is perhaps the easiest way to remain cool. Although not overly populated with shade trees, Arizona has its share. The Tipu is perhaps one of the more popular shade trees in the desert because it grows quickly, reaching heights of 40 to 50 feet in just a few seasons. The Sissoo tree is also popular because it’s a semi evergreen. It grows to about 60 feet high and offers the much needed shade to anyone sitting under it. The green-trunked Palo Verde can be spotted throughout Arizona, and with its wide canopy, can bring relief from the sun’s harmful rays. The Arizona Ash, Weeping Willow and Elm are also known for being a landscaper’s favorite for beating the heat. Because trees draw moisture from even the driest of environments, it’s not unusual for the bark and leaves of a tree to be cooler than the surrounding air temperature. By simply being near a grouping of trees, a little relief can be found. Tree huggers may have the right idea. Hug a tree and feel the heat exchange. Ever wonder why the koala is often seen lounging in a tree, arms wrapped around a branch or the trunk? Michael Kearney, from the University of Melbourne, has written a study that shows koalas hug trees to stay cool in the brutal Australian heat. Hugging a tree, or simply sitting under its shade, can cool the body’s external temperature, but what about cooling the internal burn?

PLANT MEDICINE

SECTION pages 26-29

By now, most people have heard at least a little bit about the benefits of herbs for the human body. Herbs are sometimes generally categorized as being a hot or cold herb. Spicy peppers leave a burn in the throat or on the tongue, and although it may seem counterproductive, eating spicy peppers can actually help lower body temperature. Peppers contain capsaicin, which sends signals to the brain that the body needs cooling. Herbs in the mint family, like peppermint, can leave a cool sensation in the mouth, but the levels of menthol in mint can also leave the internal body feeling cooler. Though the outward reaction of an herb may be hot or cold, it’s the internal benefits that can keep body temperature balanced—so don’t be fooled by the taste or external sensations of certain herbs and foods. Lemon balm has been used to treat hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland, along with the hypothalamus, regulates body temperature. During the heat of summer, these glands are overworked because they’re trying to keep the body cool. Give a helping hand by adding some lemon balm to a glass of iced tea. Other cold foods like tomatoes, lettuce, eggplants and mushrooms can be consumed to keep the body feeling cooler. Also, these foods don’t take as much energy from the body to process because they’re easily digested. Watermelon, kiwi, apricots, bananas and strawberries all have a cooling effect on the body as well, which is perhaps why they can always be counted on as a summer staple. Milk, yogurt and cheese are also considered to be cooling—think ice cream. When Mother Nature throws on the heat switch during the summer months, just know that she also provides everything that’s needed to stay cool. J. t’s a dry heat. How many times have Arizonans said this, or heard it, when referring to the temperatures of the state? Residents have explained to friends and family from other states that the heat can be tolerated and even enjoyed because it’s dry. That is true. Even on a 100-degree day, it can be pleasant outside in the shade. Bring a little bit of moisture into the picture and everything changes. Humidity can make even an 80-degree day miserable in the desert, and anywhere on the planet, and shade does not offer an escape. Moisture in the air makes it thicker and some people call it oppressive and suffocating. Although the heat in Arizona is usually dry, the monsoon season brings moisture into the air and everything changes. One area of change is storage practices for food and medicine.

The monsoon season in Arizona can bring about some of the most severe weather in the country. In the past, the monsoon season start date was determined by having three consecutive days where the dew point was 55 degrees or higher. The National Weather Service altered that process in 2008 and decided to have a set start and end date for the rainy season. It begins on June 15 and ends on September 30. During this time, it is steamy in the desert. Heat and humidity can wreak havoc on food and medicines. When the craving of the day is cheese and crackers, it can be ruined when that first bite doesn’t have the crisp, crunchy texture that’s expected. A soggy, stale cracker can put a stop to any crave. The structure of the cracker has been changed. It can also be true for potato chips, cereal and even certain nuts and seeds.

Plant Medicine Section Sponsored by Earth’s Healing

The same scenario happens with certain medication. According to a study conducted at Montreal Children’s Hospital, moisture and high temperatures alter drug effectiveness. Patricia Vandercruys, the Site Director of the Pharmacy Department, says that most medications need to be stored at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, which is 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and in a cool, dark space. Medications can begin to break down and become less effective when exposed to humidity and high temperatures. Liquids can become solids with excessive heat, like the yolk of an egg when cooked, and some solid medications can become insubstantial when exposed to moisture. Some medicine can even become harmful when its integrity has been compromised by heat and moisture. Medicinal marijuana is not immune to these weather changes, and its effectiveness can be altered. Marijuana cultivators are well aware of moisture and heat and how it changes the crop, shelf life and effectiveness of the medicine. Although how farmers dry the plant may vary, every one of them cure the flower. Curing is the process of ridding the plant of excess moisture. The process takes a little time, but in doing so the cannabis doesn’t lose any of the cannabinoids or ter-

penes, which are the medicinal agents of the plant. Horticulturists have found that the moisture content of cannabis should be between six and nine percent. After curing, the product is stored to ensure freshness and optimal benefit. Once the medicine is purchased and brought home, precautions should be taken to keep the cannabis from taking on excess water or from losing too much moisture. If stored correctly, according to the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, marijuana can stay fresh and remain at its highest potency for up to two years. Too much moisture can cause mold to grow in the flower of the cannabis plant, which can be dangerous for the body. Severe reactions can even include death. If the medicinal marijuana being inhaled contains mold, asthma and allergies can be aggravated. Also, the body’s immune system will kick into high gear because it’s designed to fight off foreign particles in the body. This all seems counterproductive when using a medication to help the body heal. Too little moisture in the cannabis bud causes it to dry out, become brittle and lose valuable cannabinoids. Dryness will also bring about a bitter taste and will sometimes burn the throat when smoked, causing bouts of coughing.

Do not store cannabis in plastic bags, aluminum foil or paper. Some of the chemical properties of plastic and aluminum foil can seep into the plant. Paper is porous and absorbent, which can leech out the necessary moisture and leave fibrous materials clinging to the leaves. Do not store it near a heat source like an oven or heating vent, and never put it in the refrigerator or freezer, which changes the structure of the chemical balance. All of these methods can break down the integrity of the plant, which causes it to lose some of the beneficial cannabinoids which are the essential parts of the medication. The best way to store medicinal marijuana is an airtight glass container like a jar. Make certain that the jar is clean and dry before putting the medication inside. At Earth’s Healing, the budtenders all go through extensive training that can help ease the difficulty in understanding the “how to” and “how much” when looking for the natural way to heal. Earth’s Healing Dispensary is conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., in Tucson. Visit their website at EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 27.

E DENTAL SOLUTIONS' SAFETY PROTOCOL, OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

W

e recognize times have changed and priorities have shifted. Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our staff and patients. With this in mind, we are happy to share the additional steps we are taking to make every visit to our office as safe as possible. These actions are incremental to our normal standards of care that meet or exceed all guidelines for dental practices. Our goal is to add peace-of-mind to the friendliness and clinical excellence you have come to expect. We are in this together, and we will never underestimate the power of a smile! Advanced Staff Training Our team has completed additional awareness and prevention programs to enhance knowledge and preparedness. Pre-Screening of Every Patient A quick health questionnaire, consent form and a no-touch temperature check are completed for every patient. Masks The beautiful smiles of our clinical team, our friendly administrative team and patients will be protected behind those masks. Hand Sanitizing Every patient will be asked to thoroughly disinfect their hands when entering the practice. No Patient Gloves Allowed Minimizing cross-contamination is an important part of our plan. We will ask you to dispose of any outside gloves before you enter. Virtual Waiting Room Now, you can check-in from your car to minimize contact with others, bypass the reception area, and go directly to your treatment room. No Magazines or Drink Station This may make our reception area a little less exciting, but it makes it much safer as well. Social Distancing in Place Fewer chairs in our reception area and helpful signs make 6’ spacing a practical reality.

Air Purifier with HEPA Filter and UV-C For your safety, installed in every room to help kill airborne germs and improve air quality. Anti-Microbial Rinse We will provide a solution to rinse in your mouth for 60 seconds and reduce bacteria before any procedure. Sequenced Patient Scheduling We are allocating more time between visits for coming, going and cleaning. Expanded Patient Appointments In an effort to save you time and exposure, we are offering extended appointments that allow us to do more dentistry in a single visit. Disposable, Protective Coats & Hats When appropriate, our team will utilize another layer of protection to minimize the spread or absorption of airborne particles. Cleaning After Every Appointment We thoroughly wipe, sanitize, and disinfect all instruments, equipment and surfaces in each operatory after every patient. Instrument Sterilization This is standard procedure at all times. Anything that goes near your mouth is heat and pressure cleaned between every use. Installed Clear Barriers Hard plastic guards have been strategically placed and are cleaned regularly. No Office Tours We enjoy starting every new patient visit by showing off our amazing practice. These tours will have to wait for your next visit. No Handshakes or Hugs We truly do love our patients. However, we will save our hearty welcomes and goodbyes for a later date when things are "back to normal". Dr. Elahe Wissinger
