NATURE BASICS

Natural Awakenings PLANT MEDICINE SECTION pages 26-29

By now, most people have heard at least a little bit about the benefits of herbs for the human body. Herbs are sometimes generally categorized as being a hot or cold herb. Spicy peppers leave a burn in the throat or on the tongue, and although it may seem counterproductive, eating spicy peppers can actually help lower body temperature. Peppers contain capsaicin, which sends signals to the brain that the body needs cooling. Herbs in the mint family, like peppermint, can leave a cool sensation in the mouth, but the levels of menthol in mint can also leave the internal body feeling cooler.

Though the outward reaction of an herb may be hot or cold, it’s the internal benefits that can keep body temperature balanced—so don’t be fooled by the taste or external sensations of certain herbs and foods. Lemon balm has been used to treat hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland, along with the hypothalamus, regulates body temperature. During the heat of summer, these glands are overworked because they’re trying to keep the body cool. Give a helping hand by adding some lemon balm to a glass of iced tea.

Other cold foods like tomatoes, lettuce, eggplants and mushrooms can be consumed to keep the body feeling cooler. Also, these foods don’t take as much energy from the body to process because they’re easily digested. Watermelon, kiwi, apricots, bananas and strawberries all have a cooling effect on the body as well, which is perhaps why they can always be counted on as a summer staple. Milk, yogurt and cheese are also considered to be cooling—think ice cream. When Mother Nature throws on the heat switch during the summer months, just know that she also provides everything that’s needed to stay cool.

NATURE BASICS: STORAGE 101

Brought to you by Earth’s Healing

It’s a dry heat. How many times have Arizonans said this, or heard it, when referring to the temperatures of the state? Residents have explained to friends and family from other states that the heat can be tolerated and even enjoyed because it’s dry. That is true. Even on a 100-degree day, it can be pleasant outside in the shade. Bring a little bit of moisture into the picture and everything changes.

Humidity can make even an 80-degree day miserable in the desert, and anywhere on the planet, and shade does not offer an escape. Moisture in the air makes it thicker and some people call it oppressive and suffocating. Although the heat in Arizona is usually dry, the monsoon season brings moisture into the air and everything changes. One area of change is storage practices for food and medicine.

The monsoon season in Arizona can bring about some of the most severe weather in the country. In the past, the monsoon season start date was determined by having three consecutive days where the dew point was 55 degrees or higher. The National Weather Service altered that process in 2008 and decided to have a set start and end date for the rainy season. It begins on June 15 and ends on September 30. During this time, it is steamy in the desert.

Heat and humidity can wreak havoc on food and medicines. When the craving of the day is cheese and crackers, it can be ruined when that first bite doesn’t have the crisp, crunchy texture that’s expected. A soggy, stale cracker can put a stop to any crave. The structure of the cracker has been changed. It can also be true for potato chips, cereal and even certain nuts and seeds.

The same scenario happens with certain medication. According to a study conducted at Montreal Children’s Hospital, moisture and high temperatures alter drug effectiveness. Patricia Vandercruys, the Site Director of the Pharmacy Department, says that most medications need to be stored at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, which is 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and in a cool, dark space. Medications can begin to break down and become less effective when exposed to humidity and high temperatures. Liquids can become solids with excessive heat, like the yolk of an egg when cooked, and some solid medications can become insubstantial when exposed to moisture. Some medicine can even become harmful when its integrity has been compromised by heat and moisture. Medicinal marijuana is not immune to these weather changes, and its effectiveness can be altered.

Marijuana cultivators are well aware of moisture and heat and how it changes the crop, shelf life and effectiveness of the medicine. Although how farmers dry the plant may vary, every one of them cure the flower. Curing is the process of ridding the plant of excess moisture. The process takes a little time, but in doing so the cannabis doesn’t lose any of the cannabinoids or ter

penes, which are the medicinal agents of the plant. Horticulturists have found that the moisture content of cannabis should be between six and nine percent.

After curing, the product is stored to ensure freshness and optimal benefit. Once the medicine is purchased and brought home, precautions should be taken to keep the cannabis from taking on excess water or from losing too much moisture. If stored correctly, according to the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, marijuana can stay fresh and remain at its highest potency for up to two years.

Too much moisture can cause mold to grow in the flower of the cannabis plant, which can be dangerous for the body. Severe reactions can even include death. If the medicinal marijuana being inhaled contains mold, asthma and allergies can be aggravated. Also, the body’s immune system will kick into high gear because it’s designed to fight off foreign particles in the body. This all seems counterproductive when using a medication to help the body heal. Too little moisture in the cannabis bud causes it to dry out, become brittle and lose valuable cannabinoids. Dryness will also bring about a bitter taste and will sometimes burn the throat when smoked, causing bouts of coughing.

Do not store cannabis in plastic bags, aluminum foil or paper. Some of the chemical properties of plastic and aluminum foil can seep into the plant. Paper is porous and absorbent, which can leech out the necessary moisture and leave fibrous materials clinging to the leaves. Do not store it near a heat source like an oven or heating vent, and never put it in the refrigerator or freezer, which changes the structure of the chemical balance. All of these methods can break down the integrity of the plant, which causes it to lose some of the beneficial cannabinoids which are the essential parts of the medication. The best way to store medicinal marijuana is an airtight glass container like a jar. Make certain that the jar is clean and dry before putting the medication inside.

At Earth’s Healing, the budtenders all go through extensive training that can help ease the difficulty in understanding the “how to” and “how much” when looking for the natural way to heal. Earth’s Healing Dispensary is conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., in Tucson. Visit their website at EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 27.

E DENTAL SOLUTIONS' SAFETY PROTOCOL, OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

We recognize times have changed and priorities have shifted. Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our staff and patients. With this in mind, we are happy to share the additional steps we are taking to make every visit to our office as safe as possible. These actions are incremental to our normal standards of care that meet or exceed all guidelines for dental practices. Our goal is to add peace-of-mind to the friendliness and clinical excellence you have come to expect. We are in this together, and we will never underestimate the power of a smile!

Advanced Staff Training

Our team has completed additional awareness and prevention programs to enhance knowledge and preparedness.

Pre-Screening of Every Patient

A quick health questionnaire, consent form and a no-touch temperature check are completed for every patient.

Masks

The beautiful smiles of our clinical team, our friendly administrative team and patients will be protected behind those masks.

Hand Sanitizing

Every patient will be asked to thoroughly disinfect their hands when entering the practice.

No Patient Gloves Allowed

Minimizing cross-contamination is an important part of our plan. We will ask you to dispose of any outside gloves before you enter.

Virtual Waiting Room

Now, you can check-in from your car to minimize contact with others, bypass the reception area, and go directly to your treatment room.

No Magazines or Drink Station

This may make our reception area a little less exciting, but it makes it much safer as well.

Social Distancing in Place

Fewer chairs in our reception area and helpful signs make 6’ spacing a practical reality.

Air Purifier with HEPA Filter and UV-C

For your safety, installed in every room to help kill airborne germs and improve air quality.

Anti-Microbial Rinse

We will provide a solution to rinse in your mouth for 60 seconds and reduce bacteria before any procedure.

Sequenced Patient Scheduling

We are allocating more time between visits for coming, going and cleaning.

Expanded Patient Appointments

In an effort to save you time and exposure, we are offering extended appointments that allow us to do more dentistry in a single visit.

Disposable, Protective Coats & Hats

When appropriate, our team will utilize another layer of protection to minimize the spread or absorption of airborne particles.

Cleaning After Every Appointment

We thoroughly wipe, sanitize, and disinfect all instruments, equipment and surfaces in each operatory after every patient.

Instrument Sterilization

This is standard procedure at all times. Anything that goes near your mouth is heat and pressure cleaned between every use.

Installed Clear Barriers

Hard plastic guards have been strategically placed and are cleaned regularly.

No Office Tours

We enjoy starting every new patient visit by showing off our amazing practice. These tours will have to wait for your next visit.

No Handshakes or Hugs

We truly do love our patients. However, we will save our hearty welcomes and goodbyes for a later date when things are "back to normal". Dr. Elahe Wissinger
