Publisher’s Notes Positivity for 2022. The

last couple of years have certainly brought out new challenges, as well as, opportunities both personally and professionally. While, we can reflect back on the past, we must continue to move forward and embrace change. As we enter our 21st year of publishing, I’m excited about the year ahead. At press time, Gasparilla festivities are happening and many fundraising and charity events are filling the calendar for spring. Don’t miss the 3-day Gasparilla Music Festival scheduled for February 27-29, 2021. A new year generally means focusing on goals and health. With February being Heart month, we’ve once again partnered with the American Heart Association to bring the special section — Leaders With Heart. Learn about area leaders that support the AHA and this years theme “Reclaim your Rhythm.” It is important to know your numbers and control blood pressure to reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event. In MetroHome, we feature interior designer Lisa Gilmore’s 1920s era cottage that showcases an eclectic style filled with bright colors with each room in a different style, yet blends cohesively together. Throughout the home are pieces that Gilmore collects while traveling. While traveling can still be uncertain, Orlando’s Discovery Cove offers the perfect escape only a couple hours from Tampa Bay. We recently visited and had a relaxing day, while swimming with dolphins, and learning some of their behaviors. The all-inclusive price includes food and drinks too. It’s the ideal tropical day escape for the entire family. In this issue, we feature METRO Weddings + Events with several Real Weddings and an Inspiration shoot that are showcasing the love that couples still feel, regardless if their plans have been altered or delayed. It just goes to show, that love endures, and weddings must go on.

St. Petersburg is a destination for the arts, and the latest museum to open its doors in the arts district is the Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement (MAACM) – the world’s only museum dedicated to the American Arts and Crafts movement. Founded by the private collector Rudy Ciccarello, the museum opened its doors on September 7, 2021. The 40,000 square feet of gallery space is filled with crafted objects and installations from the end of the 19th century as a reaction against the Industrial Revolution’s ethos of mass production. The collection includes more than 2,000 objects primarily from 1890 - 1930 including furniture, pottery, ceramic tiles, metalworks, woodblocks, lighting, textiles and leaded glass from

artistic and companies including Gustav Stickley, Charles Rohlfs, Frank Lloyd Wright, Newcomb Pottery, Tiffany Studios and more. In addition to the permanent works, the museum will also host temporary exhibitions. The five-story, 137,000 square foot museum building was designed by Tampa-based architect Alberto Alfonso. The building “is inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in its detailing and customisation of material and joinery,” said Alfonso. “[It] will serve the collection in its presentation of precious objects in a modern, functional, and didactic way. The spaces will embrace natural light and respond to the different scales of the objects they hold.” The museum building itself is a

work of art with a show-stopping spiral staircase greeting guests in the central atrium. Visitors will enjoy an outdoor green space, an education studio, graphic studio, research library, theater, event space, retail store, restaurant and café. There is additional event space for weddings and corporate events. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m.

The Left Bank Bistro Celebrates 3rd Anniversary Celebrating in 1920s style, the Left Bank Bistro delighted guests with a fantastic event to highlight their successful third year. It has certainly been a difficult year for restaurants with the pandemic, but owner Susanne Byram felt the need to celebrate the success. “When The Left Bank Bistro was just my vision, I knew once I made the commitment to create this establishment, failure was not an option,” said Susanne Byram, owner of the restaurant and neighboring Market at Left Bank. “This is also the reason I felt it was more important than ever to celebrate our 3rd Year Anniversary and recognize our incredible Chef J Ward and staff that helped make those years a success.” The anniversary evening was transformed into a 1920s era establishment, complete with live music, red carpet, paparazzi and more. The décor was reminiscent of the 1920s with black ostrich feathers and orchids cascading from the chandeliers. Diners could select from a Prix Fixe menu with dishes prepared to perfection. After dinner, guests were directed to a cigar bar where they could enjoy an after dinner drink or cigar while listening to live jazz. Left Bank Bistro is located at 1225 Dr. MLK Jr. St. N., St Petersburg, FL 33701. For reservations call 727-256-1691, or visit www.theleftbankbistro.com.

asteful décor featuring tantalizing colors like watermelon-tinted velvet curtains and a sectional upholstered in avocado hues contrast with bedrooms boasting a wilder aesthetic emboldened leopard spots and zebra stripes. A chaise lounge woven from natural fibers adjoins a dining room displaying nostalgic Art Deco side chairs. Original art discovered during world travels are as prominently displayed as paintings purchased from home décor retailers. This electric array appealingly, and harmoniously, co-exists within the walls of a single-story home overlooking brick-lined streets in St. Petersburg. Professional interior designer Lisa Gilmore takes exceptional pride in overseeing this project because it was for her own home. Recognized by Architectural Digest as a Leading Designer in Southwest Florida, Gilmore relocated from a downtown St. Petersburg high-rise condominium to a nearby historic neighborhood three years ago. The 1920s era cottage provided Gilmore with a fenced-in yard and screened in porch that were ideal for her German shepherd dog and cat, plus allowed abundant space for items she

22

www.TampaBayMetro.com

has acquired over the years, as well as, new additions curated specifically for the dwelling. “It’s happy, cozy and filled with color and pieces I collect when I travel,” said Gilmore, principal designer at Lisa Gilmore Design. The move from the confines of a one-bedroom/one-bathroom floor plan to a three-bedroom home finished with original wood floors, filled with natural light and highlighted by a working fireplace, afforded Gilmore the luxury of designing each room with a different style identity that collectively blends into a comfortable, cohesive design. Other than painting a room and replacing a few light fixtures, the residence was makeover-ready when she made the move. Working within neutral walls and ceilings, Gilmore enlivened the space with colorful rugs, luxurious lights and objects de art. Among the pieces that migrated to her new space is a stunning glass-topped coffee table supported by the enormous curved horns radiating from two rams heads.

“There is no color that is off limits in my house,” said Lisa Gilmore.

Creating collections of framed art atop side tables and cabinets, collages of paintings and photographs exhibited on walls and a wall-mounted arrangement of dishes crafted in Paris, introduces levels, layers and overlapping elements that create depth and dimension. No matter how many pieces are assembled, stacked or staged, the result looks quite balanced and not at all cluttered. Then there is the bedroom wall showcasing a single swatch of wallpaper depicting wild animals that provides an unframed – and untamed – look at jungle life. Both approaches add drama, but in very different ways. “The key is to always be editing myself,” she said, adding the décor is unabashedly a work in progress. “There may be pieces I rotate out and put in storage, or something new that I add to the home, or I may move something into another room.”

A former bedroom now doubles as a dressing room with a walk-in closet and office. Outfitted with a high end Barbara Barry Baker piece that serves as both a vanity and desk, Gilmore sourced IKEA for shelves to create colorful displays of fashionable clothes, shoes and accessories. Filling the front porch with lush plants, splashes of Gilmore’s favorite color, green, and the chaise shipped from a Philadelphia vintage shop, the cottage’s entryway exudes a Bohemian vibe that is both sultry and sophisticated. “Being a business owner and a person always on the go, I wanted an environment that was an escape. I love to travel to Tulum, Mexico and wanted to create that same feeling of a jungle. M Lisa Gilmore Design 727.201.8902 www.lisagilmoredesign.com

Relax and Unwind at Discovery Cove By Ronda M. Parag

H

ave you ever dreamed of swimming with dolphins? Now, dreams become reality at Discovery Cove Orlando. It’s the ideal place to escape with the family for a fun-filled, tropical, water-filled getaway. METRO recently visited the all-inclusive Discovery Cove for ourselves and enjoyed a beautiful day filled with these beautiful dolphins, snorkeling with fish and sting rays, and relaxing in our own private cabana. One of my favorite things about Discovery Cove is everything is included in the price of admission. Once you are inside the park, all food and drinks (beer, wine and sodas) are included with delicious options for breakfast, lunch and plenty of snacks. Just let the kids go, and they won’t be back asking for money for drinks or food. Another favorite feature is the controlled occupancy of the park, so it never feels crowded and there is plenty of room for total relaxation and to escape into paradise. While there are plenty of lounge chairs and space on the sandy, white beaches, a recently added amenity are Luxury Day Beds. These Luxury Day Beds fit two adults and offer a secluded, covered setting with plush chaise lounges overlooking lush landscaping and pristine beaches. For a larger family or group of friends, I highly recommend the private cabana, which accommodates up to eight guests and offers waterway views, chaise lounges, towel service, stocked mini-fridge, snack basket, photo package and reserved seating for dining. Upon arrival to the parking area, a short walk to the entry and guests are greeted by friendly staff that takes care of everything including upgrading experiences, if desired, for a Shark Swim, Signature Dolphin Experience, SeaVenture or behind-the-scene- Animal Trek. A mask and snorkel, and wet-suit are included with admission. The Dolphin Experience allows guests to interact with the dolphins in the shallow lagoons and touch and even take a ride holding onto the dolphins fin, along with several photo ops to document the experience. It was an up-close and personal experience that brought sheer delight and joy to be so close to these amazing animals. The pandemic has taken a lot from us – our routine, social events, taking care of ourselves – the rhythm of our life. And it is time to reclaim it! The American Heart Association Tampa Bay’s Leadership Teams are sharing how they are reclaiming their rhythm this year. How will you reclaim yours?

RECLAIM YOUR RHYTHM Getting back to what we lost

It is time to RECLAIM YOUR RHYTHM and get back to being who you used to be. It’s time to refocus on your health and wellbeing, because losing even one mom, brother, friend, or neighbor to cardiovascular disease is too many. It’s probably no surprise that after more than 18 months into this pandemic, people are suffering from lower physical health and mental well- being. Americans feel overwhelmed and stressed, which negatively impacts cardiovascular health. Uncontrolled high blood pressure and heart disease deaths rose significantly in the past year. Cardiovascular diseases remains the greatest health threat to Americans, but the pressures of COVID-19 remain top of mind. Today, 1 in 3 Americans report being worried and more

36

www.TampaBayMetro.com

than half of U.S. adults say that COVID-19 has negatively impacted their mental well-being due to worry and stress. Poor mental well-being is a critical problem that, if neglected, can lead to serious health complications. The pandemic took a lot from us. It taxed our mental and physical health and robbed us of many of our daily joys and the things that matter most: our routine, our friends and family, celebrating special occasions, and taking care of ourselves — the rhythm of our life! Let’s support each other in committing to creating healthy habits that stay with us and keep our rhythm flowing and get us back in the groove. There is no better time than right now. How will you reclaim your rhythm?

CONTROLLING THE PRESSURE Blood pressure levels are on the rise By American Heart Association News

Blood pressure levels rose among U.S. adults after the pandemic-related shutdowns of spring 2020, according to new research that shows women and older adults had the highest increases. Unfortunately, the repercussions of the pandemic were widespread and have had many negative consequences on people’s overall health. Almost half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, also called hypertension, which is a leading cause of heart disease. Blood pressure is described using two numbers: systolic, the top number that measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats, and diastolic, the bottom number that measures pressure in the arteries between beats when the heart is resting. Recently observed increases in blood pressure are likely related to changes in eating habits, increased

alcohol consumption, less physical activity, decreased medication adherence, more emotional stress and poor sleep. And we know that even small rises in blood pressure increase one’s risk of stroke and other adverse cardiovascular disease events. Even in the midst of the pandemic, it’s important to pay attention to your blood pressure and don’t ignore your chronic medical conditions. Get regular exercise, eat a healthy diet, and monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol. See your doctor regularly to learn how to reduce cardiovascular risk factors.

You can get tools and resources to better monitor and control your blood pressure at home at Heart.org/BloodPressure. www.TampaBayMetro.com

CHAMPIONING HEALTH EQUITY FOR ALL The American Heart Association’s 2024 Goal

The term “health equity” has been around for quite some time. It means, simply, what our world would look like if all people had the same opportunity to be healthy. The tragic reality is that social, historical and systemic factors have led to a lack of health equity in underresourced communities and among many Black, Hispanic, Indigenous and Asian people. Gaps are evident everywhere people live: urban, suburban and rural environments. While the American Heart Association has long pushed for health equity, the turmoil and trauma that brought historical inequities to the forefront in 2020 prompted a ramp up of an already aggressive approach. With the organization’s centennial anniversary approaching in just two short years, they have launched 10 bold commitments to remove barriers for health and backed them with action and urgency — an investment of over $200 million to fulfill them by 2024.

38

www.TampaBayMetro.com

The organization-wide impact goal was also updated to align around these words:

Every person deserves the opportunity for a full, healthy life. As champions for health equity, by 2024, the American Heart Association will advance cardiovascular health for all, including identifying and removing barriers to health care access and quality. Visit Heart.org to learn more about the commitments that have been made by the American Heart Association to remove barriers to health equity through science, community investment, improvements to health care access and quality, advocating for change and more.

s Corbett Preparatory School of IDS’ longest serving Head of School, Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman established a model of professional development that inspired her own faculty and staff, as well as, thousands of educators worldwide to strive for excellence and keep students at the center of all they do. The Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) honored Dr. Swarzman in November with the 2021 Edgar McCleary Service Award, a special recognition for a “teacher’s teacher” who has given generously of his or her time to further the mission of FCIS schools. FCIS, the state accrediting organization for independent schools, created the award in 2011 to spotlight educators who go above and beyond in their service. Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS is a private independent International Baccalaureate school that serves 500+ PreK3 - 8th grade students from all over the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Barbara Hodges, executive director of FCIS, presented the award via Zoom during the FCIS Annual Convention while Dr. Swarzman, Corbett Prep faculty and staff, and more than 1,000 guests watched online. “Corbett is a very, very special place,” said Dr. Hodges. “But it wasn’t just about Corbett.” Throughout her career, Dr. Swarzman led professional development trainings for more than 20,000 teachers locally, nationally, and internationally. She created the research-based M.O.R.E. Model (Multiple Options for Results in Education), specific components and strategies designed to help educators create a brain-friendly learning environment, and she traveled to Spain and China to share those methods with schools worldwide.

“Her efforts produced great teachers, many of whom became great heads of school,” Hodges said. And together they changed the lives of countless children. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Swarzman received her B.A. degree from Ohio State University. She received her M.A. in Counseling, her M.Ed. in Supervision and Curriculum, and her Doctorate in Teacher Education, all from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. Dr. Swarzman has extensive experience as a classroom teacher, having taught in the inner cities of Chicago, Atlanta, and New York. Her story is told in the book, “It’s All about Kids: Every Child Deserves a Teacher of the Year,” published in 2004. Dr. Swarzman joined Corbett Prep – then Independent Day School – in 1996. A strong leader, energetic teacher and experienced trainer, Dr. Swarzman was the director of the University of South Florida’s Suncoast Area Teacher Training program. She made professional development a priority for IDS/ Corbett Prep and hosted conferences in cooperative learning, social-emotional learning and brain-based communication. In 2020, Corbett Prep welcomed Nicholas Rodriguez as its new Head of School, and Dr. Swarzman turned her focus on supporting initiatives and training. Rodriguez, who has two decades of experience in private and independent schools, honed his leadership skills during a yearlong fellowship with Dr. Swarzman. Corbett Prep maintains its commitment to the dynamic learning community Dr. Swarzman established. Hodges said she looked forward to the ways Dr. Swarzman will continue to shape the lives of students and their teachers: “She joins the greats of the greats, but she’s not finished yet.” “You create magic,” Dr. Hodges told Dr. Swarzman.
