Publisher’s Notes A Time For Blooming. It’s time to rediscover your strength and reestablish connections with friends and family this spring season. Throughout Tampa Bay, business is open and schools are returning to a normal pattern of in-class learning. Social and charity events are slowly starting to fill our calendars again with in-person events. Go inside as the Museum of Fine Arts showcases five mosaics in an interactive exhibition Antioch Reclaimed: Ancient Mosaics at the MFA on view through August 22. Local artist and fashionista, Ivanka Ska has created Smart-Carry that will be on every women’s must-have list. We share her story in METROLife People. In addition, events have started and we feature our own METROMixer and a celebration for World Art Day. As the entire Tampa Bay community mourns the loss of Dr. Randy Feldman, we showcase a beautiful celebration created by his wife Kelly. We went on location to beautiful Treasure Island for the Fashion Forward Swimwear photo shoot with photographer Brian James. The real estate market throughout Tampa Bay is exploding with people searching for their dream home, and relocations from out of state. In this issue, we feature METRO Home + Design. In At Home, Dan and Brittany Persaud spent three years renovating their lakefront home. Enrique Crespo with Crespo Design Group created a warm and inviting space and transformed the couples ideas into a modern lake retreat. In METRO Home Tour, designer Rob Bowen of Rob Bowen Design Group created a modern masterpiece of stunning beauty at One condominium in downtown St. Petersburg. In Trends, discover the perfect textures, materials and color palette from Clayton Gray Homes. Escape for a week, or even just a couple days, to historic St. Augustine with plenty of attractions & museums, nearby beaches, and it’s an easy drive from Tampa. Locally, check out two new exiting hotspots — Haiku in downtown Tampa and Willa’s in North Hyde Park. Each offered a tasty menu and great service, I will be back. Cheers,

Antioch Reclaimed: Ancient Mosaics at the MFA, showcases five mosaics, historical photographs of the excavation, and other beautiful artifacts.

The Museum of Fine Arts Antioch Reclaimed: Ancient Mosaics at the MFA The current exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts began more than 57 years ago, when the Museum of Fine Arts acquired five ancient mosaics from Princeton University in 1964, one year before the museum opened in downtown St. Petersburg. In 2018, three of the mosaics were discovered buried on the east lawn and underwent extensive conservation and preservation. The community and museum guests observed the work on the mosaics through an outdoor conservation lab. The exhibition showcases the five mosaics from a site dig from 1933 - 1939 in what was the site of Antioch, a GrecoRoman city in ancient Syria founded in 300 BC and now modern Antakya in southern Turkey. The dig resulted in the discovery of the city center of Antioch and its wealthy suburbs, where all the mosaics were discovered covering the

floors of the elegant private villas. “This exhibition is unique for us, and for any art museum for that matter,” said Dr. Bennett, MFA Senior Curator of Early Western Art. “It’s a hybrid exhibition that seams together history and art to present the riveting story of Antioch and its fascinating excavation. When you step into the galleries, you will see the beauty of the incredible art and images, and learn about the significance of the artifacts, but you’ll also experience and feel what it was like during that ancient time, and in that historical moment of archeological discovery.” The exhibition includes black and white excavation photographs of the homes where the MFA’s mosaics were located, and cover the gallery walls as floor-to-ceiling murals. The design creates an immersive experience for museum guests, imparting an historical context and a sense of scale,

place, and time. In addition, the Princeton Archives has lent vintage photographs, letters, telegrams, journals and find cards, guest books, drawings, as well as newly-discovered film footage that shows the excavation in progress, and actual lifting of the mosaics from their original locations. MFA Executive Director and CEO Kristen A. Shepherd said restoring the mosaics has been an exciting opportunity for the community to understand ancient culture and the profound importance of conserving and displaying antiquities.

Antioch Reclaimed: Ancient Mosaics at the MFA will be on exhibit through August 22. The MFA is located at 255 Beach Dr. NE, in downtown St. Petersburg. For more information, visit www.MFASTPETE.org.

Ivanka Ska Multi-Media Artist Turns Inventor Many people have faced difficult challenges during the pandemic and local St. Petersburg fashion designer, Ivanka Ska, used the past year while also healing from cancer, to solve a universal problem for women — how to easily carry and find the items we need in our handbags. METRO had a chance to chat with Ivanka about her recent solution, Smart Carry and her favorite places in St. Petersburg. METRO: What inspired you to create these bags? IVANKA SKA: I was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer two years ago. Bedridden with six surgeries and numerous visits to the hospital, I observed a problem that most women deal with every day — not able to find anything in their purses. I started talking to every woman I met asking about their bag story. To hear names like a black hole and deep space was very revealing. What exists on the market now only helps you pack as much as you can, and it goes straight to the bottom. I designed an insert that helps women find the most important items immediately. My solution was Smart Carry Luxury Insert and it’s proudly made in U.S.A. M: Where are they sold or how can we order them? SKA: The Manhattan Collection is available at The Dalí Museum Boutique. The VIP Collection and other designs are on my website at www.SMART-CARRY.com. M: What is your next project or design? SKA: The manufacturer I am working with is in a process of making new samples for the next Smart Carry - Grace.

10

www.TampaBayMetro.com

M: What are your favorite hobbies or interests? SKA: I live for fashion and art, but my most recent new hobby is a chicken city in my backyard. We have five chickens that have cool names given by my 6 year old son including Kentucky, and Fry. We are getting five eggs per day already, needless to say all our neighbors get free, fresh eggs and my husband bakes a lot. M: What are your favorite places in St. Pete to explore, relax or just have fun?

SKA: For great lunch with art, where often I have meetings with clients — Café Gala at The Dalí Museum. I love the St Pete Pier for a fun stroll and Mahaffey Theatre for a great concert. I go to Creative Clay for cool art made by artist with disabilities and always up for a shopping spree at Jackie Z boutique in Sun Dial. For a sweet treat, I go to Beverly’s Ice Cream on Clearwater Beach, and for super laughs, funny girl comedian Brandi Thomas at the Coconut Comedy Club.

Randy’s Sunset A Celebration for Dr. Randy Feldman Celebrated orthodontist and community leader Dr. Randy Feldman left us in March, but not before he made an indelible mark on Tampa Bay. Randy was the life of many parties, so his wife Kelly celebrated “Randy’s Sunset” precisely as he wanted. Family, friends, and colleagues came together at the Salt Shack by the Bay to toast a true Tampa icon. The celebration began with YMKG Pirates greeting guests (he was a proud member), and continued with a second line which bellowed The Ohio State University Fight Song (his Alma Mater), choreographed dancers and a song dedicated to Randy, a signature cocktail, and even a Pirate Ship, culminating in fireworks to say goodbye to a man who meant the world to so many. As Randy would say, to all of us, “Be Well.” To that, we say, Godspeed, Dr. Feldman. A fund has been established in Randy’s name through MoreHealth with a foundation forthcoming to continue Randy’s charitable initiatives. To donate: www.morehealthinc.org/feldman/. The brand new JW Marriott Tampa’s SIX Terrace was the ideal spot to host the private networking event with plenty of space for social distancing. The chef prepared tantalizing appetizers of scallops, meatballs and more. Flamenco guitarist Javier Hinejosa, and his band, laid down some smooth Latin tunes, while guests enjoyed seeing each other in person. IN 2008... We continue to celebrate METRO’s 20th year of publishing with a look back 13 years to May 2008. It was the Food & Wine Connoisseur’s issue with a focus on area chef’s and their culinary

secrets, along with kitchen design trends and a favorite family vacation to Colorado at the C Lazy U Ranch. Travel is opening and it might be time to plan your summer family escape.

The Culinary Scene There is quite the foodie scene throughout Tampa Bay with new restaurants continuing to open, and provide unique and quality experiences. Back in 2008, we featured five chefs and five of their tastiest dishes and wine pairing. We are still huge fans of Restaurant BT, and chef BT Nguyen continues to push the culinary envelope with her additional restaurants Bistro BT and BT To Go with her “Eat Local and Think Global” mission.

Spring/Summer Fashion 2008 Fashion is ever changing and every season brings new trends to wear and showcase your style. Vivid colors and bold prints were one of the top spring trends in 2008. Neiman Marcus’ Fashion Director Ken Downing said then, “Color loves color this season.” In 2021, Downing said, “Spring is all about unapologetic indulgences steeped in individuality.”

The Sundancer 370 was three years in development and was launched in conjunction with the 45th anniversary of the Sundancer series. Offering the latest in design and technology, there are characteristics of the Sea Ray heritage, but a chance to move forward into the future. Previous Sea Ray boat owners will recognize many of the design elements in the Sundancer 370 as unquestionably Sea Ray. “Our goal was to define the foundation for bold and pure design expression,” said Charlie Foss, Sea Ray Design Director. “Working together with Designworks, we were able to produce a fresh set of design principles that pay homage to our brand’s past while indicating the future, resulting in a look that is undeniably Sea Ray. An output of the collaboration was the definition of four key design characteristics to inform Sea Ray models moving forward: sleek, confident, athletic, and distinctive.” The design elements are carried throughout the 37-foot cruiser with various features from the fabric to the hardware. The Sundancer offers the ideal family boat that is perfect for entertaining friends in a space that has been thoughtfully designed with every comfort imaginable. The U-shaped cockpit is ideal for hosting dinner parties and cocktail hours with a wet bar, flameless Kenyon® grill, optional refrigerator and optional teak tables. With seating for up to five adults, the bow transforms with an optional filler cushion from a table to a spacious sun lounge. The three-position convertible transom seat easily transitions from a hard-back surface when underway to an aft-facing seat or sunpad when at rest.

The stylish cabin below is luxuriously appointed with inviting comforts for an oasis-like retreat on the water. The windows allow in natural light and and the space offers spa-like finishes. The forward V-berth lounge area offers an L-shaped couch and smart TV to watch a movie. The cabin gourmet galley offers all the creature comforts of home with an optional microwave, refrigerator, solid-surface countertops, a trash receptacle and cabinetry with lower storage to prepare drinks, snacks and meals. When it is time for sleep, the L-shaped couch converts to the master bed and the mid berth features fill-in cushions to form a queen-sized bed. “We are feeding the demand of the market and will take six months to build the first 10,” said Ritch Ragle, Sea Ray’s Director of North America Sales. “Like all industries, qualified labor and supply chain are a challenge now, especially with all the handcrafted components.” When asked how many Sundancer 370s Sea Ray will be manufacturing, Ragle joked, “One more than we can sell.” With a top speed of 52 miles per hour, the Sundancer will take you where you want to go in style and luxury. The Summer 2021 Home Market Report By Ronda M. Parag

A

fter spending a year in our homes, the need to see and traverse inspiring scenery has never been so enticing. Thankfully Clayton Gray Home’s Market Report for Summer is the perfect armchair travel guide to experience the latest home furnishings and design movements from the industry’s top creative minds. Owner, Wendy Garraty recently returned from market and has discovered inspiring looks to refresh our living spaces. “This season, we set our gaze upon modern and textured organics that shake up the natural order,” said Wendy Garraty, Owner of Clayton Gray Homes. “Forget what you know about seaside style. These bleached and unpigmented

38

www.TampaBayMetro.com

pieces redefine coastal casualness, while leaving evident the many influences and materials used by master artisans and hand-crafted traditions.” Standouts include hand-sewn glass and beaded lighting, rattan-wrapped case goods, and intricately hand-woven artwork. The creations are works of art on their own and swoon-worthy when selected with a purpose. “Texture is everywhere and in unexpected places as the whole sensory experience has come full circle,” said Garraty. “Feel free to touch and enjoy beautiful boucle fabrics, capiz shell accents, and raffia details. Adding just a few of these accents to a room gives depth and elevates the vibe.”

Most impressive and captivating is the use of organic materials in interesting and modern ways. Natural objects are hand-selected and hand-applied, resulting in limited edition sought-after designs. “Each market experience includes navigating the many showrooms to spot the looks that stop us in our tracks, literally,” said Garraty. “After over a decade in the business, we never tire of sourcing beautiful furnishings and making them available online and in our South Tampa shop.” M Clayton Gray Home 1413 S. hen we travel, it is often the luxurious amenities of a hotel that inspires and soothes our souls. For one south Tampa couple, the team at Bayshore Custom Homes collaborated to bring design elements from luxury resorts such as The Ritz-Carlton and The Four Seasons to their new design build. “During a pandemic, it was easy to dream up all of the elements and bring them to life, where we were inspired by their luxury dreams, and applied them to their home,” said Shannon Mathews, Senior Designer. “The client loves white so we added white quartz, white cabinets and a white tub,” said Mathews. “Everything melted together to provide a crisp, clean and modern color palette.” To create a focal

40

www.TampaBayMetro.com

point in the space, Mathews says that they omitted the typical drywall linen closet and added a tall glass vanity cabinet, used to display the clients large, white, spa-like towels. Lighting was also very important to the bathroom space. “We added more modern lighting and less ornamental,” said Mathews. “We used can lights and LED rope lighting in the tray ceiling to create mood lighting and a serene ambiance.” Mathews also adds that there was not a lot of natural light in the bathroom, so a wall to wall mirror added a reflective component to make the space appear larger and brighter. The oversized, dual walk-in shower and soaking tub, with tile surround, provide resort-style elements to the

bathroom. Moen provided the high-tech digital Smart Home features with U by Moen, that bring the perfect spa-like experience to life. The controller allows the client to personalize their showering experience, prior to even stepping into the shower. The state-of-the-art technology allows homeowners to set the temperature, time and other shower features for the ultimate splendor of an at home staycation. AT HOME From Mediterranean To Modern Oasis By Mary Lou Janson | Design by Crespo Design Group

T

he former Mediterranean-style home did little to maximize its lakefront location. The interior offered too many obstructed views and too few wide open vantage points. Today, the aptly named Lake Pretty in Odessa is much more of a focal point from inside the residence. A more pronounced sense of place permeates throughout the new décor and design. Nature is now an influence and inspiration, no longer an afterthought. Walls and floor-to-ceiling columns have been removed, windows and sliding glass doors added, and the entire first floor re-configured to create a more open flow and, of course, more opportunities than ever to admire the views. In addition, the previously dim interior dominated by dark cabinets, countertops and floor coverings, has now been brightened through the use of neutral shades on finishes and fabrics covering floors, walls and furnishings. Even a bulky, wood banister staircase was discarded for a more streamlined, wrapped-in-glass version highlighted by floating steps. All of the changes combine to update – and uplift – the property’s personality from subdued to sublime. Danny and Brittany Persaud purchased the 6,141-square-foot Keystone Park Colony single-family home in 2017. Being able to launch their boat on a lake only accessible to local residents, and owning property spacious enough to accommodate the main house and a stand-alone guest house were among the attributes they sought.

“Our vision was a modern, lake house that would feel warm and inviting. Crespo Design came highly recommended from friends of ours and we loved every step of working with them,” said Brittany Persaud.

But, in its original state, the home lacked features they loved. Moving the master bedroom and bathroom to the second floor, expanding the second floor to accommodate all six bedrooms, and creating a comfortable outdoor area suitable for entertaining and enjoying sunsets helped to make the residence much more suitable for their lifestyle. “We did a total remodel, 100 percent,” said Danny Persaud. “The former house was gloomy and we wanted a more modern look with windows everywhere.” Once work was completed, the couple moved in with their two children, daughter Danika, now two years and nine months old, and Dax, their nine-month-old son. “Now we are very happy with the house. It was a labor of love to make it happen.” Working with Enrique Crespo, principal of the Tampabased Crespo Design Group, and Lisa Clark, a senior designer with the firm, the natural beauty of the home’s location became integrated into the interior and exterior design plans. “We wanted a transitional interior that would be more modern, as well as, bring in organic elements from the lake to create very clean and simple architectural features,” Crespo said. “A softer color scheme comprised primarily of shades of gray, blue and white also contributed to the more luxurious, and less constrictive, look and overall feel.” French white oak floors, a fireplace encased by a stacked stone wall, a silver leaf wood trunk centerpiece table in the living room and circular, wall-mounted planters featuring succulents blend and balance the indoors with the outdoors.

“The outdoor living space, complete with a fire pit, allows you to walk outside to a whole other seating area,” said Crespo. “We wanted to continue that Florida lifestyle from the inside to the outdoors, because it doesn’t end at your living room.”

“Our vision was a modern, lake house that would feel warm and inviting. Crespo Design came highly recommended from friends of ours and we loved every step of working with them,” said Brittany Persaud. “They took our ideas and elevated them while still staying true to our aesthetic.” Affectionately known as “The Resort,” the home has become become a family and friends favorite destination for all sorts of celebrations, whether gathering within the expanded kitchen for meals served on the over-sized island, or around the cozy outdoor dining and lounging areas that overlook the pool and lake. HOME TOUR The Jewel Box in Downtown St. Petersburg By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Seamus Payne

I

t began as a blank canvas defined by little more than white porcelain floors and a free-flowing layout featuring high ceilings, wall-to-wall windows and sliding glass doors. The One St. Petersburg high-rise condominium still maintains that crisp, clean foundation, open floor plan and abundance of natural light but now exudes glitz and glamour. A Silver Leaf ceiling, a rug embedded with sparkles and mirror frames reminiscent of over-sized Cartier cufflinks are among the design details now enhancing the interior. Included in the dramatic transformation are one-of-a-kind furnishings and fixtures, geometric and graphic designs displayed on walls and area rugs and organic elements like marble and bronze that add sheen and shine. “Every room has a strong personality and a strong pointof-view but they all share a common DNA,” said Rob Bowen, principal of the St. Petersburg-based Rob Bowen Design Group. “It’s really a little jewel box.” The 34th floor condo features a standard floor plan for a two bedroom, plus den, three-bathroom residence spanning less than 2,000 square feet. The layout shaped the space, but didn’t define a look or a lifestyle. With the help of artisans from across the country, Bowen carefully curated the condo literally from floor to ceiling, layering luxuriously thick shag rugs over the original flooring and installing gorgeous galaxies of lights that are seemingly suspended in space overhead. Large, black reflective glass mirrors strategically placed on select walls allow light to bounce around the interior and give it a much more spacious appearance than its square footage suggests. Irregular patterns and unconventional shapes may seem incompatible but, instead, create synergy. Views of every room, and from every angle, capture and captivate the eye. “It keeps you looking,” said Bowen. “I wanted the design to give you enough, but still leave you wanting more.”

Even the more commonplace characteristics of the home were implemented in extraordinary ways. A hand-scraped, sandblasted oak entertainment center custom-made to encase the large screen TV in the living room hovers above a faux fire pit. The water vapor fireplace uses mist and LED lights to simulate the look, color and movement of real flames. A non-traditional free-standing bathroom sink made of curved metal could be mistaken for a sculpture, but is absolutely a functioning basin. “We do lots of big beautiful homes. The challenge with this one was that we wanted to do something really dynamic but adaptable to condo living,” Bowen added. “We wanted it feel super luxe and super detailed. In a big home you get a lot of canvas to play with. In a small box you have to go at it with surgical precision. It’s what you don’t put in that makes it successful.” Shades of black, grey and white make strong statements, but subtle touches add contrast and warmth. Purple enlivens the sofa located in the more intimate lounge space overlooking the dining area. Bronze inlaid into black marble tiles makes the kitchen’s backsplash glow. Customized components include the circular dining room table featuring a thick disc of glass treated to achieve close-to-perfect clarity set atop a commissioned bronze base. Wall treatments range from hand-painted grass cloth and linen coverings to a vinyl version with a design inspired by graffiti, each solely selected for a specific placement. “The space is beautiful to look at, but to also live in and entertain in,” said Bowen. “You can enjoy yourself here.” M

Explore the Old World Charm of Historic St. Augustine By Ronda M. Parag

s the oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustine offers more that 60 sites and attractions from the historic Castillo de San Marcos Fort to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum to the stunning design of local churches including the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, the oldest Roman Catholic parish in the U.S. Between exploring the local sites, enjoying the beach or listening to live music while sipping on a cocktail, there is plenty of activity to be found. We recently escaped for a couple days in early March and found that shops, restaurants and attractions were open and welcoming visitors. Step back in time with a stay at the luxury Casa Monica Resort & Spa, part of The Kessler Collection located in St. Augustine’s Historic District. The historic Spanish architecture has both Moorish and Spanish Baroque Revival influences with Moroccan frescos, stunning artwork and tapestries, and ornate chandeliers all

evoke a mood to another era. Originally opened in 1888 as the Cordova Hotel, the hotel has an interesting history having been abandoned, reopened as the St. John’s County Courthouse, abandoned again until it was purchased and renovated to be apart of the Kessler collection. The rooms are classically furnished with plush velvet headboards and old-world charm. Guests also receive exclusive access to the nearby private Serenata Beach Club on Ponte Verda Beach to enjoy a relaxing day at beach or lounging poolside, plus access to the Palencia Golf Club. For dining, the Ice Plant located in a 1920s industrial building is a scratch kitchen with cool atmosphere and a seasonal menu filled with a twist of familiar comfort foods and hand-crafted cocktails made with fresh squeezed juices and house-made syrups and artisanal spirits. The fried chicken with gravy and hoecakes and collard greens satisfied. In historic downtown, The Tini Martini Bar offers a

grand selection of martinis, but get there early in the evening to avoid the line. A must-try hotspot for dining and live music is the Prohibition Kitchen on St. George Street, offering up a selection of craft burgers and sandwiches and dinner selections of wahoo and grits, braised short ribs and St. Louis smoked ribs. Be sure to order one of the Hands-on Milkshakes. We liked the Hot Fudge Brownie with Bourbon, but also available with no alcohol. Great live music is playing most nights. The sister restaurant next door, The Roosevelt Room, offers a delicious breakfast, lunch, brunch menu of savory dishes including Lobster Benedict, Corned Beef & Potatoes to the sweet Brûlée French Toast. St. Augustine is less than a four hour drive from Tampa and offers an array of activities for the entire family or a romantic escape with 42 miles of pristine beaches, and golf and elegance in nearby Ponte Vedra. A Welcome Addition To North Hyde Park Willa’s | By Ronda M. Parag

W

hile it can be a bit tricky to navigate the closed roads around the newest restaurant in North Hyde Park, Willa’s is certainly worth discovering. Located at the corner of Fig and Rome in Tampa, the surrounding neighborhood residents are thrilled that Willa’s is now open. With nearly 2,500 new apartments and homes in the nearby area of south Tampa, downtown Tampa, Tampa Heights and just a short walk from UT, Willa’s is certain to become a neighborhood hot spot. The adjacent Willa’s Provisions serving up King State coffee, delicious pastries, soft-served ice cream and other to-go items recently opened. Founded by Tampa natives, Nate Siegel and Merrin Jenkins, and named after Jenkins, great-great-grandmother William Lowry, the casual, chic, industrial-design restaurant and bar serves up a seasonal menu of classic American cuisine with French influences.

The namesake of the restaurant was a 19th-century Tampa pioneer whose original family home remains today on South Plant Avenue. Willa’s devotion to the city and civic involvement still reverberates throughout Tampa: she convinced Andrew Carnegie to help fund the first public library in Tampa, established what would become the second Girl Scouts of America troop, and improved educational opportunities for children by forming the Free Kindergarten Association. “To us, a neighborhood restaurant is casual, serves classic food people want to eat all the time and has an attentive staff that remembers regulars,” says co-founder Nate Siegel. “With Willa’s, we’re thrilled to serve and support Tampa with a place we hope locals and visitors alike will want to come again and again.” The menu is divided between snacks, appetizers, sandwiches, soups and salads and plates, along with daily specials, created by Chef Zakari Davila, a Tampa

native who trained at French Culinary Institute in NYC and Lyon. Most everything is made in-house, from breads to the tonics used in the crafted cocktails. A couple of our favorite cocktails were the Gingers Rule and the Manhattan. A signature dish is the Rotisserie Chicken which is always on menu and is used to make stock and bone broth for many of the dishes including Chicken & Rice Soup, Schmaltz Potatoes and more. The Miso Õra King Salmon with seared haricot verts, lemon & dressed greens was cooked to perfection. The Tahini Caesar Salad with romaine and kale with a mountain of grana padano and rustic croutons, was large enough for us to share. Be sure to save room for a sweet finish made by Pastry Chef Benjamin Copeland (formerly of The Gasparilla Inn & Club). We tried the daily special of Creme Caramel, similar to a Creme Brulee, but no sugar topping, and it delighted with its sweet caramel sauce. M

Poetry On The Plate Haiku Tampa| By Ronda M. Parag

T

he newest Asian fusion restaurant in downtown Tampa offers up unique flavors and ambiance. The colorful interior, great music and tantalizing menu fill the space with an energy that provides a fun and festive dining experience. Haiku opened in late January and is a welcome addition to Tampa’s restaurant scene with its colorful design, both on the interior, and on the plate. On a recent evening the restaurant was filled with beautiful people sipping cocktails and enjoying the energy at the bar. The central downtown Tampa location offers both indoor and outdoor seating at the ground level of the Element. Haiku offers the Izakaya style experience, which is a type of informal Japanese bar that serves cocktails and small plates. Izakaya’s are casual and offer a great place to gather with friends for happy hour and daily celebrations

with beverages ranging from sakes to sangrias, and hand-crafted cocktails including a house favorite Ginger Bloom or the Dragons Breath. Executive Chef David Reyes has always had a passion and interest in Japanese and Asian influence culture and food. He was raised in a Spanish Mexican family in Chicago, where his parents incorporated Asian influence in their cooking. With over two decades of hospitality experience, Chef Reyes looks to create “poetry on the plate.” Reyes brings plenty of passion and experience to Haiku’s Japanese fusion menu. The menu offers a great selection of Asian inspired starters and sharable dishes including Duck Bao Buns, Tabesaki Wings and a selection of Tempura, Braised Pork Belly and Wood-Fired Yakitori. Choose from several ramen and rice dishes, and for

vegans, there are plenty of menu options. Be sure to try the house specialty — Wagyu served on a hot stone with shishito chili, spicy mango, soy dim and veggie yakitori. For sushi and sashimi lovers, be tempted with variety of rolls filled with tenderloin, crab, tuna, salmon or vegetables. While most Asian fusion restaurants don’t offer many dessert options, Haiku makes theirs in-house and a favorite is the Blossom & Pear Custard and the Flourless Chocolate Torte topped with matcha ice cream, crushed pistacho and salted rice crunchies. The gorgeous, floral ceiling private dining space is ideal to host an intimate dinner for family and friends. Grab a seat on the outside patio while the weather is still ideal to enjoy a delicious meal or creatively crafted cocktail. M
