Publisher’s Notes Paradise Found.

It seems everyone has discovered Tampa Bay. From the trophy winning sports teams to the gorgeous beaches and great business climate, people from other parts of the country are moving here. We already know what they are discovering, Tampa Bay is a great place to live, work and play. In this issue, it’s the Best of METRO. We’ve included some of the best places around Tampa Bay for arts & entertainment, dining & spirits, health & beauty and style & décor. In METRO People, we feature Anita Camacho who is known as the butterfly whisperer. She is on a mission to create a Butterfly Conservatory in South Tampa where guests can come to learn about nature and the lifecycle of butterflies. She is passionate about native plants to attract insects, butterflies and bees. Check out Foodie where we finally discovered Social Roost in downtown St. Pete. The service was fantastic and we had a delicious meal with great friends. If you haven’t tried it, owners Jason Teabolt and Rob Bowen would be happy to welcome you to their restaurant. In METROHome, we feature the historic home of Steve and Wendy Garraty that has been lovely restored, and was recently featured in the annual Hyde Park Home Tour. While many people had to postpone or cancel their vacations from the pandemic, things are slowly returning to normal. The cruise industry was impacted greatly, but more cruises and destinations are now becoming available. We had the opportunity to go on MSC Seashore for a week long cruise in the Caribbean. Check out the Getaways article on page 64 to read all about our adventure. We also enjoyed the weekend at Hotel Haya in the heart of Ybor City. It was nice to feel like a tourist and discover our own city. It’s the time of year that kids are getting out of school and things slow down just a bit. Get out there and discover our great metro Bay area.

The Butterfly Whisperer Anita Camacho

Known for her passion and love for nature and butterflies, Tampa resident Anita Camacho has plans to create a Butterfly Conservatory in the heart of South Tampa later this year. A CPA by trade, Camacho decided during the pandemic to follow her passion for gardening, and all things butterflies. In 2020, Camacho opened Hillsborough County’s only native plant nursery, The Little Red Wagon Native Nursery where there are an abundance of native plants that will thrive in Tampa Bay gardens. The nursery area is a really visual place for kids and adults alike to visit and understand the importance of nature and nurture, and inspire everyone to pay more attention to the creatures and environment around us. Camacho gives educational classes, offers summer camp programs, and speaks to groups around Florida raising awareness of the environment and how we can help protect the environment by using native plants and she teaches how to attract butterflies and bees to pollinate to our own outdoor spaces. “There are certain plants such as Aquatic MilkWeed that are natural attractors for butterflies,” said Camacho. “I’m all about showcasing native plants that will bring butterflies to people’s yards, and doing it chemical free.” She’s the President and Founder of Tampa Bay Butterfly Foundation and the Tampa Bay Chapter of North American Butterfly Association. “I have always been fascinated by the metamorphosis of the butterfly,” said Camacho. “It’s amazing to see what the tiny creature undergoes as it begins as a tiny speck of an egg on the underside of a leaf and transforms into a beautiful creature with wings. People view the butterfly as a symbol of endurance, change, beauty, hope and life.” Little Red Wagon Native Nursery 4113 Henderson Blvd. Tampa, FL 33629 813.551.2359 www.butterflytampa.com

The multidisciplinary artist Gio Swaby (b. 1991, Nassau, Bahamas) whose work explores the intersections of Blackness and womanhood opens May 28 at the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Pete. The exhibition features more than 40 works ranging from intimate portraits to life-size textile panels fabricated from sewn line drawing and quilting techniques. Creating unique portraits through a range of textile-based techniques, Swaby’s work is anchored in a desire to celebrate the imperfect and complex humanity of Black women.

“I would describe my work first and foremost as an act of love,” said Swaby. “For me, these physical pieces are not necessarily the work itself. The work is more making connections and growing love. Those portraits are like a dedication to that work, or a residue of that work.” “Swaby’s portraits, wherein Black female subjects are defined through the lens of reciprocal love and caring, are a form of resistance to one-dimensional presentations of Black womanhood, said co-curator Katherine Pill. “Her works are commanding, but nuanced in their

representations of strength and vulnerability, and seem to ask viewers to consider the interiority of the subjects and the depth of their inner complexities.” The exhibition is co-organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg and the Art Institute of Chicago and co-curated by Katherine Pill, Curator of Contemporary Art at the MFA, St. Petersburg, and Melinda Watt, Chair and Christa C. Mayer Thurman Curator of the Textile Department at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The exhibition opens May 28, 2022 through October 9, 2022 at Museum of Fine Arts 255 Beach Dr. NE | St. Petersburg, FL 33701 | www.mfastpete.org

Cornelia and Dick Corbett

Dick Corbett Donates $25 Million To Tampa Museum of Art’s Centennial Capital Campaign Renovations have been underway at the Tampa Museum of Art to increase gallery space, educational space and event space. The expansion at Tampa Museum of Art was announced, and a capital campaign started during the 100th anniversary celebration of the museum that began in 2020. In an unprecedented gift to the arts, Dick and Cornelia Corbett have been decade-long supporters of the Tampa Museum of Art. “The Tampa Museum of Art strengthens arts and culture in our vibrant city, and opens the eyes of school children to the power of beauty and imagination,”

said Dick Corbett. “I am proud to make this historic gift to TMA in celebration of their centennial anniversary. My hope is that it will encourage others who have the means to give back to also join in and support the growth of the Museum’s world-class exhibits and programs.” “This extraordinary gift to the Museum contributes a historic $25 million cash gift to our campaign for the Museum’s expansion,” said Michael Tomor, Ph.D., the Penny and Jeff Vinik Executive Director of the Tampa Museum of Art. “It will allow us to grow our overall area from 69,000 to 120,000 square feet and expand our exhibition and collections space from 14,800 square feet to 43,000 square feet. It will also more than triple available event space, add public restaurant and retail store space as well as a 10,000-square-foot Education Center, allowing us to serve 24,000 Hillsborough County school students annually.” “Our community is blessed by so many other significant gifts and legacy projects developed and funded by Dick Corbett,” said Jerry Divers, chair of the Tampa Museum of Art Foundation and head of the Museum’s Centennial Capital Campaign. Corbett is perhaps best known for conceiving, developing, and attracting funding for Tampa International Plaza and Bay Street shopping center, opening in 2001 through his real estate investment firm, Concorde Companies. He and his wife, Cornelia, have supported Corbett Preparatory School of IDS for over 40 years, the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay with a dedicated Corbett Trauma Center and have been honored into the Florida Council of Economic Education Hall of Fame, and many other honors and impactful donations throughout the country. “His contributions have been bold catalysts for effective, broad-based public and private projects with lasting benefits for commercial development in Florida as well as on policies affecting K-12 education, growth management, economic development, agriculture and commercial real estate,” said Divers.

Stylish and Tasteful Transformation of a Hyde Park Historic Home By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Dan Austin

E

ight decades after it was designed and built, the Dutch Colonial-style house still exuded so much charm and character that Wendy and Steve Garraty were compelled to make the home their own. As taken as they were by the Hyde Park historic home, the Tampa couple knew they would need to invest in improvements to make it an ideal fit for their family and to ensure it would to continue to age gracefully. www.TampaBayMetro.com

45

It was 2001 when the new owners first moved in and began what would turn out to be a lengthy, and quite extensive, transformation of everything from the grounds and garage to the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Twenty years later, the home has been lovingly, thoughtfully and tastefully updated, renovated and restored. Today, the two-story dwelling is more family friendly, structurally sound and stunningly chic. Over that time period, interior and exterior improvements preserved the classic features of the dwelling while making it more accommodating for the parents, their children, pets and houseguests. This became the childhood home of daughter Grayson Garraty, now 24 years old, and son Jack Garraty, 21, and is the current domicile of the dogs, Pepper, an Aussiedoodle, and Bentley, a Shih Tzu. First order of business for the 2,486-square-foot, four-bedroom, two-bathroom home was to convert an upstairs bedroom into a full master bathroom and walk-in closet and relocate the laundry room from the first floor. “The kitchen was renovated just before we moved in, so we focused our attention on the upstairs,” said Wendy, founder and owner of Clayton Gray Home, an online source for more than 5,000 curated home furnishings and interior design pieces from around the world. “Then, in 2009, we installed a pool, converted the garage into a pool house with a bedroom and en suite, and renovated the backyard. This completely transformed how we use the home and made it into the perfect indoor/outdoor space.” More recent improvements have been geared towards upgrading framework, floors and walls of the home by reinforcing its foundation, refinishing and staining the original pine wood floorboards and repainting the interior and exterior.

47

Wendy used her professional expertise and eye for design to create a stylish look that transcends time. Natural materials, neutral tones and furnishings sourced from various decades, as well as far-reaching destinations, balance the original architecture with a contemporary aesthetic. “The furnishings in the home are a true reflection of my personal style, a blend of vintage items, antiques and some new pieces from my South Tampa home furnishings shop,” she said. “I wanted to create a space that complimented the historic elements of the home, while still being a welcoming and modern space for my family to enjoy.” Translucent chairs in the formal dining rooms, a clear-glass circular table with a transparent base in the foyer, flowing linen curtains and grasscloth Roman shades add to the overall sense of lightness, openness and airiness.

“The dining room features a beautiful metal and stone table, a patterned zinc sideboard, and vintage acrylic chairs with natural hide cushions. I paired these pieces with a pair of 1930s lamps I brought from Atlanta along with an incredible vintage rug I sourced from Morocco,” Wendy added. “Our foyer table is a vintage square acrylic base that was sourced from a market in Atlanta with a larger round glass top added to give more surface for styling fun accessories.” Even with all of the work completed to date, there is more to be done. “People are always interested in the downstairs bathroom - the European bathroom that has two steps down to enter,” said Wendy. “We are finishing up this renovation but the look will be black and white with lacquer and a custom marble sink sourced from Italy. The look will honor the style of the house while giving it just a little bit of an update.” M 50

The Place for Flavors & Friends Social Roost | By Ronda M. Parag

W

ith it’s striking ambience, hand-crafted cocktails and delicious entrees, Social Roost owners Jason Teabout and Rob Bowen have created a special spot in the heart of downtown St Petersburg. Honestly, I don’t know why it has taken us so long to try Social Roost located in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg. Bowen who is an award-winning designer created the interior with a rich, deep teal palette and the most glittery gold fabric for the back wall. Its chic and fun vibe set the tone for lunch and dinner or great for weekend brunch. Teabout spends at least four days a week overseeing the restaurant, along with a friendly staff

including General Manager Max Blowers, many of whom started when the restaurant opened. Bowen joked that they opened the restaurant, so he or Teabout would never have to cook again. They eat almost daily at Social Roost. While much of the menu does feature flavorful and a variety of chicken dishes, there are other options as well. Executive Chef Susan Burdain hails from NYC has a menu filled with a variety of dishes and flavors from small plates to mains. We shared a couple of small plants including Tuna Tacos - they came with three, but since there were four of us, we easily added another. If you like mussels, be sure to order the Curry Mussels – a bowl

full of delightful flavors of white wine, garlic, samba, curry aioli and served with toasted Ciabatta bread. As far as main dishes, the Shrimp & Grits was hearty with blackened shrimp, cheese grits in a fire roasted tomato sauce served with fried brussel sprouts. The Chicken Parmesan served with angel hair pasta made the clean plate club. The flavorful dish of Chicken Khoa Soi was just the right amount of spice with coconut curry broth, noodles, mushrooms, red onion, scallions, cilantro and chili oil. Happy Hour is known as Social Hour at Social Roost. So stop by to meet friends or with a few crafted cocktails, make new ones. M

Discover Cigar City at Hotel Haya By Ronda M. Parag

Hotel Haya

I

t’s authentic and a great place to discover the “real” culture of Tampa. There is nothing artificial or manufactured about Ybor City, also known as Cigar City. That is why we really enjoyed a recent hotel stay at Hotel Haya, located on 7th Avenue in Ybor City. Opened in 2020 and designed by Alfonso Architects, Hotel Haya offers luxurious accommodations, fine dining and an ideal location from which to discover the entertainment in Ybor City. The 178 room hotel gives a nod to the “Golden Age of Havana” with its décor and interior furnishings from artwork to lighting. The hotel combines two historic buildings — the district’s first restaurant built in 1890 and the Warren building, rumored to have housed Teddy Roosevelt & Rough Riders. While there are many options for drinking and dining in Ybor, there is no need to leave the hotel for a delicious meal. From fine dining at Flor Fina to

a casual breakfast or lunch at Café Quiquiriqui (pronounced Kee-Kee-ReeKee), discover the authentic and elevated flavors of latino cuisine. Start the day with a cup of Cuban coffee and Cuban Toast with butter and guava jelly, or for lunch an El Cuban or the Quiquiriqui Chicken Salad Sandwich. The sandwich was filled with smoked chicken breast, coffee rubbed bacon, arugula, avocado, sliced tomato, basil mayo on multi-grain bread. The bar serves up delicious craft cocktails including the Painkiller as a signature drink in a colorful peacock glass. We also did enjoy an espresso martini while listening to live music on Friday night and a DJ on Saturday evening. Entertainment varies throughout the week. The bar offers a wide selection of rums and spirits, along with an impressive wine list. Flor Fina recently announced they are now open for lunch Tuesday - Friday

from 11a.m. - 3 p.m., along with a new Executive Chef, Nathan Hardin and Director of Food and Beverage, Jeff Carlson. A special Brunch menu is also offered on weekends including Eggs Havana, Crab Cake Benedict or Spanish Breakfast along with Bruch Liabations of Build Your Own Mimosa and Bellini. The dinner menu at Flor Fina offers tapas starters and we enjoyed the delicious Octopus Tostada served with charred avocado, black beans and charred salsa and Chorizo Meatballs. A variety of ceviche is also offered. Entrees feature handmade pastas, chicken, seafood - including a whole fish, grouper and calabrian chili shrimp and a 36 oz Tomahawk Ribeye. After a night in Ybor City, the best part of a stay at Hotel Haya is simply going upstairs to your beautifully decorated room for a dreamy sleep. Wake up re-freshed and ready to spend a relaxing day by the pool. M

The MSC Seashore at Sea

Cruising Into Relaxation The MSC Seashore, PortMiami | By Ronda M. Parag

H

ave you wondered what is like to completely unplug and relax at sea? Now is the ideal time to consider cruising. The cruise industry was hit especially hard due to the pandemic, but MCS has been sailing since August 2020 under health and safety protocols that evolved throughout the pandemic to keep guests and crew safe. Now, cruise lines are seeing increased booking and more sailings have begun to meet demand. MSC is constantly adjusting and adapting to make sure that everyone’s safety and health are a top priority, and all guests have a fun and safe experience aboard the ship. We recently boarded the MSC Seashore from PortMiami for a week long cruise to the Caribbean with port stops in Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the MSC private island in the Bahamas. We spent our week on board enjoying every part of the ship and the excursions in the

three ports. The MSC Seashore made her inaugural sail on November 18, 2021 and is the 16th ship of the MSC fleet. The MSC Seashore offers innovative design and glamour for more than 5,632 guests with 2,270 staterooms. The unique design offers 140,000 square feet of outdoor space and plenty of room to relax on the pool deck, or from the balcony of the cabin allowing stunning views of the sea. Special features of the MSC Seashore include a brand new lounge, Cabaret Rouge with a host of new entertainment shows, six swimming pools with an indoor pool in the Jungle area with a roof that can be opened or closed depending on the weather, an interactive waterpark and a spectacular new aft infinity pool with two whirlpools. With several days at sea, be sure to book an appointment at the MSC Aurea Spa. The Aurea Spa offers a range of

services for beauty and wellness from massages, haircuts, and nail services. We booked massages for the first day at sea, and exited the spa in complete state of relaxation. As Yacht Club guests, we had unlimited access to the Aurea Spa Thermal Suite with scrub room, steam room, salt room, snow room, saunas, indoor and outdoor jacuzzi’s and special lounge areas. We took advantage of the tranquility and relaxation by using the spa thermal areas nearly every day. The décor throughout the ship is glamorous and in the center of the ship with a tribute to NYC, a Times Square with LED wall spanning four decks with a projection of the iconic NY attraction that changes from day to night, a shopping area called Times Square and a nearly 10 foot replica of lady liberty herself, The Statue of Liberty. Nightly entertainment includes dueling pianos spanning different decade

each night. For those wishing to try their luck at sea, the casino has 182 slot machines, 12 table games and the latest gaming technology. For the ultimate in luxury cruising, be sure to book the MSC Yacht Club – this area is all-inclusive and offers the “ship within a ship” concept. We enjoyed our own butler, who from the moment we were escorted onto the ship to our departure, handled dining reservations, provided recommendation for activities, and all requests that we had to make our vacation exceptional. We enjoyed the private pool, exclusive restaurant and lounge, complimentary drinks, 24-hour room service, and private shore excursions. Yacht Club guests have their own private dining room offering three meals a day with sit-down, white table cloth service. The menu changes daily. The 24-hour room service was always an option with in-room breakfast enjoyed on our private balcony or a late night snack of pizza in room. There are 11 distinct dining venues with three main restaurants, an Aurea Spa restaurant, MSC Yacht Club restaurant, Marketplace buffet and specialty restaurants. Due to the lower guest count, several of the dining options were not opened, but the five specialty restaurants located in the Chef’s Court were open including the Butcher Cut Steakhouse. We tried three of the specialty restaurant and enjoy the intimate dining experience and had handcrafted cocktails at the bar before dinner. For families with children, there is a 7,500 square foot MSC Seashore Kids Club including 5 different clubs with colorful décor for infants through to teens. Kids of all ages will love the arcade gaming area. MSC Seashore is the first cruise ship in the world to feature a new air sanitation system developed by Fincantieri. ‘Safe Air’, uses UV-C lamp technology eliminating 99 percent of viruses and bacteria to guarantee clean and safe air for guests and crew. One hundred percent fresh air is used on board and there is no recirculation of air. The first stop was to the Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic which offered

66

www.TampaBayMetro.com

several excursions from horse-back riding to city tours. We spent nearly 5 hours seeing the sights and tastes of the island. The second stop was to San Juan, Puerto Rico and we embarked for a food tour, along the streets of Old San Juan, with delicious drinks of mojitos and pina coladas along with delicious mofongo and fried plantains. The last destination stop was to the MSC private island of Ocean Cay in the Bahamas. We arrived in the evening to enjoy the nighttime festivities of a beach party with a DJ, as well as, a traditional junkanoo parade topped off by a stunning light show from the Lighthouse. Formerly an industrial sand extraction site that has since been lovingly restored to pristine condition and offers sweeping views of the turquoise waters surrounding the island. After years of hard work, passion and dedication, the island is now the centerpiece of a breathtaking 64-square-mile marine reserve designed to connect guests with

nature, making it the perfect spot to take a deep breath, enjoy a delicious lunch including a lobster roll, beach cocktails, and just relax. The paradise island offers white sandy beaches where chairs, umbrellas and cabanas await for a relaxing day of soaking up the spirit of The Bahamas. The ship is taking full advantage of technology. Download the free MSC for Me app before you leave home to make the most of your cruise experience. Use the app to avoid lines on board and to make reservations for onboard experiences. Now is the time to escape and plan for that next vacation, either as a family or a romantic getaway. MSC offers many destinations and for those in the Tampa Bay area, it’s an easy trip to Port Canaveral or PortMiami to embark on a memory making cruise of a lifetime.
