The Summer 2021 Home Market Report By Ronda M. Parag

A

fter spending a year in our homes, the need to see and traverse inspiring scenery has never been so enticing. Thankfully Clayton Gray Home’s Market Report for Summer is the perfect armchair travel guide to experience the latest home furnishings and design movements from the industry’s top creative minds. Owner, Wendy Garraty recently returned from market and has discovered inspiring looks to refresh our living spaces. “This season, we set our gaze upon modern and textured organics that shake up the natural order,” said Wendy Garraty, Owner of Clayton Gray Homes. “Forget what you know about seaside style. These bleached and unpigmented

4

pieces redefine coastal casualness, while leaving evident the many influences and materials used by master artisans and hand-crafted traditions.” Standouts include hand-sewn glass and beaded lighting, rattan-wrapped case goods, and intricately hand-woven artwork. The creations are works of art on their own and swoon-worthy when selected with a purpose. “Texture is everywhere and in unexpected places as the whole sensory experience has come full circle,” said Garraty. “Feel free to touch and enjoy beautiful boucle fabrics, capiz shell accents, and raffia details. Adding just a few of these accents to a room gives depth and elevates the vibe.”

Most impressive and captivating is the use of organic materials in interesting and modern ways. Natural objects are hand-selected and hand-applied, resulting in limited edition sought-after designs. “Each market experience includes navigating the many showrooms to spot the looks that stop us in our tracks, literally,” said Garraty. “After over a decade in the business, we never tire of sourcing beautiful furnishings and making them available online and in our South Tampa shop.” M Clayton Gray Home 1413 S. hen we travel, it is often the luxurious amenities of a hotel that inspires and soothes our souls. For one south Tampa couple, the team at Bayshore Custom Homes collaborated to bring design elements from luxury resorts such as The Ritz-Carlton and The Four Seasons to their new design build. “During a pandemic, it was easy to dream up all of the elements and bring them to life, where we were inspired by their luxury dreams, and applied them to their home,” said Shannon Mathews, Senior Designer. “The client loves white so we added white quartz, white cabinets and a white tub,” said Mathews. “Everything melted together to provide a crisp, clean and modern color palette.” To create a focal

6

point in the space, Mathews says that they omitted the typical drywall linen closet and added a tall glass vanity cabinet, used to display the clients large, white, spa-like towels. Lighting was also very important to the bathroom space. “We added more modern lighting and less ornamental,” said Mathews. “We used can lights and LED rope lighting in the tray ceiling to create mood lighting and a serene ambiance.” Mathews also adds that there was not a lot of natural light in the bathroom, so a wall to wall mirror added a reflective component to make the space appear larger and brighter. The oversized, dual walk-in shower and soaking tub, with tile surround, provide resort-style elements to the

bathroom. Moen provided the high-tech digital Smart Home features with U by Moen, that bring the perfect spa-like experience to life. The controller allows the client to personalize their showering experience, prior to even stepping into the shower. The state-of-the-art technology allows homeowners to set the temperature, time and other shower features for the ultimate splendor of an at home staycation. AT HOME From Mediterranean To Modern Oasis By Mary Lou Janson | Design by Crespo Design Group

T

he former Mediterranean-style home did little to maximize its lakefront location. The interior offered too many obstructed views and too few wide open vantage points. Today, the aptly named Lake Pretty in Odessa is much more of a focal point from inside the residence. A more pronounced sense of place permeates throughout the new décor and design. Nature is now an influence and inspiration, no longer an afterthought. Walls and floor-to-ceiling columns have been removed, windows and sliding glass doors added, and the entire first floor re-configured to create a more open flow and, of course, more opportunities than ever to admire the views. In addition, the previously dim interior dominated by dark cabinets, countertops and floor coverings, has now been brightened through the use of neutral shades on finishes and fabrics covering floors, walls and furnishings. Even a bulky, wood banister staircase was discarded for a more streamlined, wrapped-in-glass version highlighted by floating steps. All of the changes combine to update – and uplift – the property’s personality from subdued to sublime. Danny and Brittany Persaud purchased the 6,141-square-foot Keystone Park Colony single-family home in 2017. Being able to launch their boat on a lake only accessible to local residents, and owning property spacious enough to accommodate the main house and a stand-alone guest house were among the attributes they sought.

Homeowners, Danny and Brittany Persuad

“Our vision was a modern, lake house that would feel warm and inviting. Crespo Design came highly recommended from friends of ours and we loved every step of working with them,” said Brittany Persaud.

But, in its original state, the home lacked features they loved. Moving the master bedroom and bathroom to the second floor, expanding the second floor to accommodate all six bedrooms, and creating a comfortable outdoor area suitable for entertaining and enjoying sunsets helped to make the residence much more suitable for their lifestyle. “We did a total remodel, 100 percent,” said Danny Persaud. “The former house was gloomy and we wanted a more modern look with windows everywhere.” Once work was completed, the couple moved in with their two children, daughter Danika, now two years and nine months old, and Dax, their nine-month-old son. “Now we are very happy with the house. It was a labor of love to make it happen.” Working with Enrique Crespo, principal of the Tampabased Crespo Design Group, and Lisa Clark, a senior designer with the firm, the natural beauty of the home’s location became integrated into the interior and exterior design plans. “We wanted a transitional interior that would be more modern, as well as, bring in organic elements from the lake to create very clean and simple architectural features,” Crespo said. “A softer color scheme comprised primarily of shades of gray, blue and white also contributed to the more luxurious, and less constrictive, look and overall feel.” French white oak floors, a fireplace encased by a stacked stone wall, a silver leaf wood trunk centerpiece table in the living room and circular, wall-mounted planters featuring succulents blend and balance the indoors with the outdoors.

“The outdoor living space, complete with a fire pit, allows you to walk outside to a whole other seating area,” said Crespo. “We wanted to continue that Florida lifestyle from the inside to the outdoors, because it doesn’t end at your living room.”

“Our vision was a modern, lake house that would feel warm and inviting. Crespo Design came highly recommended from friends of ours and we loved every step of working with them,” said Brittany Persaud. “They took our ideas and elevated them while still staying true to our aesthetic.” Affectionately known as “The Resort,” the home has become become a family and friends favorite destination for all sorts of celebrations, whether gathering within the expanded kitchen for meals served on the over-sized island, or around the cozy outdoor dining and lounging areas that overlook the pool and lake. HOME TOUR The Jewel Box in Downtown St. Petersburg By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Seamus Payne

I

t began as a blank canvas defined by little more than white porcelain floors and a free-flowing layout featuring high ceilings, wall-to-wall windows and sliding glass doors. The One St. Petersburg high-rise condominium still maintains that crisp, clean foundation, open floor plan and abundance of natural light but now exudes glitz and glamour. A Silver Leaf ceiling, a rug embedded with sparkles and mirror frames reminiscent of over-sized Cartier cufflinks are among the design details now enhancing the interior. Included in the dramatic transformation are one-of-a-kind furnishings and fixtures, geometric and graphic designs displayed on walls and area rugs and organic elements like marble and bronze that add sheen and shine. “Every room has a strong personality and a strong pointof-view but they all share a common DNA,” said Rob Bowen, principal of the St. Petersburg-based Rob Bowen Design Group. “It’s really a little jewel box.” The 34th floor condo features a standard floor plan for a two bedroom, plus den, three-bathroom residence spanning less than 2,000 square feet. The layout shaped the space, but didn’t define a look or a lifestyle. With the help of artisans from across the country, Bowen carefully curated the condo literally from floor to ceiling, layering luxuriously thick shag rugs over the original flooring and installing gorgeous galaxies of lights that are seemingly suspended in space overhead. Large, black reflective glass mirrors strategically placed on select walls allow light to bounce around the interior and give it a much more spacious appearance than its square footage suggests. Irregular patterns and unconventional shapes may seem incompatible but, instead, create synergy. Views of every room, and from every angle, capture and captivate the eye. “It keeps you looking,” said Bowen. “I wanted the design to give you enough, but still leave you wanting more.”

Even the more commonplace characteristics of the home were implemented in extraordinary ways. A hand-scraped, sandblasted oak entertainment center custom-made to encase the large screen TV in the living room hovers above a faux fire pit. The water vapor fireplace uses mist and LED lights to simulate the look, color and movement of real flames. A non-traditional free-standing bathroom sink made of curved metal could be mistaken for a sculpture, but is absolutely a functioning basin. “We do lots of big beautiful homes. The challenge with this one was that we wanted to do something really dynamic but adaptable to condo living,” Bowen added. “We wanted it feel super luxe and super detailed. In a big home you get a lot of canvas to play with. In a small box you have to go at it with surgical precision. It’s what you don’t put in that makes it successful.” Shades of black, grey and white make strong statements, but subtle touches add contrast and warmth. Purple enlivens the sofa located in the more intimate lounge space overlooking the dining area. Bronze inlaid into black marble tiles makes the kitchen’s backsplash glow. Customized components include the circular dining room table featuring a thick disc of glass treated to achieve close-to-perfect clarity set atop a commissioned bronze base. Wall treatments range from hand-painted grass cloth and linen coverings to a vinyl version with a design inspired by graffiti, each solely selected for a specific placement. “The space is beautiful to look at, but to also live in and entertain in,” said Bowen. “You can enjoy yourself here.” M
