Celebrating Powerful People in Tampa Bay

Publisher’s Notes The Lazy Days of Summer. It’s the perfect time of year to break routines and spend time with family and friends. Whether you head to the beach or enjoy that much needed vacation, it the time of year to relax and just breathe. Beat the heat with some scoops at some local ice cream shops in 8 Great Summer Scoops. From unique twists on flavors, everything is always better with a popsicle, cone, or dish of ice cream. METRO had the exclusive opportunity to chat via Zoom with the iconic and legendary Ian Schrager. He is one of the creative forces behind the EDITION hotel and residences that will open later this year in the Water Street neighborhood. The conversation was lively, and Ian is passionate about the project, and feels Tampa is coming alive and is a fantasic city. It’s something we already know! As the community is returning to the new normal, we are so happy that in-person events have resumed. Check out a few of the event happenings in SCENE. Take a peek inside the gorgeous home of St. Petersburg residents, Rob Bowen and Jason Teabolt, in METRO Home Tour. The attention-to-detail and the overall design were certainly a passion project and they have created “an oasis in the center of the city.” We also feature the Coastal Luxe and City Glam of the beautiful home of Mike and Kelly Zara created by McKinlay Rose Interiors. The updated interior brings the waterfront home back to life. Love is always in season and in this issue, we have our biannual METRO Weddings + Events special section and free standing issue. We feature three happy couples in Real Weddings with stunning details from Streamsong Resort, Armature Works and The Don CeSar. Each couple created a magical day to be remembered and cherished with the help of amazingly talented wedding vendors. We also featured a local event, Mommy & Me Tea created by Alyssa Rhoads with Eventing Tampa Bay. It was an afternoon of delight at the sold-out event held at Armature Works.

A Celebration Of The Arts In St. Pete’s Uptown Arts District

Gallerist Leslie Curran has recently relocated her gallery and framing business, ARTicles,to the Uptown Arts District.

St. Petersburg is an art city. Tourists feel it, residents welcome it and artists thrive in it. It’s impossible to drive through town without seeing a public art installation, mural or private art showcase. St. Pete actively embraces this label. And that’s not by accident. St. Petersburg’s murals have been described as “urban confetti, putting a cultural sparkle on the city” while the Dalí Museum, James Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and the Morean Arts Center are listed as a must-see for visitors, as well as, residents. They attract national and international art lovers, creating a huge economic impact on the city.

8

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Former City Council member and Owner of ARTicles Gallery & Custom Framing, Leslie Curran, recently moved and expanded her fine arts services from the Central Avenue location of 18 years to the Uptown Arts District. Joining next door to ARTicles is Alejandro Reina’s D-Gallerie. “It’s great to see art, which serves as the common thread that weaves the entire city together, expanding into the Uptown neighborhood,” says Curran. “The community’s artistic energy has created yet another great area to discover art, with a variety of locally owned independent galleries. We are thrilled to be part of the movement.” A quick survey shows at least

fifteen art galleries are alive and well in St. Petersburg. Curran believes that not limiting art to a specific area makes a difference in the availability of art for all. Curran has brought art into various neighborhoods through her advocacy of St. Petersburg’s art scene. From bringing First Night St. Petersburg to the city, hosting Art in the Park in Williams Park and leading the creation of artist studios on the 600 Block of Central Avenue, she continues to be a pioneering advocate for our artists. “Art is everywhere in this city “ states Curran. “We are a city of the arts. I’m excited to be surrounded by other creatives expanding the arts in the Uptown area.”

A Program from Champions for Children Helps Protect Against Child Abuse and Neglect TALK READ SING Tampa Bay is a community awareness campaign led by Champions for Children that educates Tampa Bay residents, especially parents, about the importance of talking, reading and singing to their children beginning at birth for building brain architecture and increasing language development. Critically, these simple interactions also promote strong parent-child attachments that protect against child abuse and neglect. This special initiative engages family-focused community partners to saturate Hillsborough County with this message by disseminating materials, sharing resources, and directly educating parents on the importance of making every day moments meaningful by simply talking, reading, and singing! So far, we have trained more than 100 “Trusted Messengers” to help the TALK READ SING Tampa Bay message reach more families as far and wide as possible.

We look forward to another year of spreading this critical message to parents, caregivers, and anyone with a child in their life in Hillsborough County. Amanda Griffin Brings Sunshine to The Children’s Dream Fund The Children’s Dream Fund recently announced their new Executive Director, Amanda Griffin. A native of St. Petersburg, Griffin graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Family and Child Sciences. Griffin began with an internship at the Children’s Dream Fund, and that’s when she felt she found her home. The internship immersed Amanda into the world of making dreams come true, giving her insight into the Dream Fund’s mission. She soon became a staff member, working in events and marketing, and learned much from her mentor, former Dream Fund Executive Director, Cynthia Lake Farrell, who recently retired. Eventually, Amanda transitioned from the Dream Fund to gain experience from other roles in the nonprofit world, most recently in development and fundraising. But, recently returned to lead the nonprofit. The Children’s Dream Fund was founded in 1981 with the single purpose of fulfilling dreams for children ages 3 - 21 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, and who live in West Central Florida. They are one of the oldest, and busiest, wish-granting organizations in the U.S., with 150 children anticipating dreams in 2021. Visit www.childrensdreamfund.org to learn more.

A New Take on Luxury Meet Ian Schrager - Creative Director The Residences at The Tampa EDITION By Ronda M. Parag

METRO had an exclusive opportunity to video chat with the legendary Ian Schrager, Creative Director for EDITION and Founder and CEO of Ian Schrager Company. Schrager says he has been working from home, using Zoom and is optimistic that we’ve turned the corner on the pandemic. “We will get back to the same normal,” says Schrager. “We always do. It may take a little while. Masks and social distancing might be the norm, but we will get back to the way we were. People have a tendency to remember the good and forget the bad.” Scheduled to open later this year, The Residences at The Tampa EDITION are developed by Strategic Property Partners, LLC and will be only the third EDITION residences in the world. There are 26 EDITION hotels throughout the world and the Tampa EDITION is located within the newly created 56-acre Water Street Tampa neighborhood in downtown Tampa. The EDITION hotel will have 172 guest rooms and suites, six food and beverage outlets, a signature restaurant

After years of calling condominiums home, Rob Bowen was ready to live in a free-standing home of his own design, both inside and out. That is, until he took notice of a newly constructed single family dwelling spotted during commutes to his downtown St. Petersburg interior design firm, Rob Bowen Design Group. His first impression was that the almost 3,000-square-foot, three-story residence was nice, but not right for him. A return visit with members of his design team validated that assessment. Yet, he was intrigued. There was the 1,000-square-foot rooftop deck overlooking Beach Drive. The location was within a two-block radius of Bowen’s design business and Social Roost, a restaurant he co-owns with his husband, Jason Teabout. Plus, there was a private pool, two-car garage, and the downtown lifestyle. After closely studying the building plans, Bowen realized that, with considerable work, he could re-make the space for a better flow and fit. That meant major changes, like eliminating the third floor bedroom and sitting room, in favor of an open area suitable for entertaining, or simply unwinding. gatherings, and a free-formed Bocci chandelier, seemingly floating overhead, keeps the mood buoyant. “When I looked at the floor plan, I put a big ‘X’ through all three floors,” Bowen recalled. Over the next nine months, the interior was gutted down to its studs and everything, from appliances to bathroom fixtures, replaced. Formerly white oak floors were sanded down and treated with a mixture of vinegar and steel wool to create a chemical reaction that deepened the color to a navy blue and dark purple hue. An ebony glaze added a dark black finish.

“Because Jason and I were doing this together, there is a lot more passion in this project, a lot more romance. And I think that there is a little more softness that is family driven,” said Rob Bowen.

“A signature of every home I have ever had is a black floor,” said Rob Bowen. “I love the feel of it. It’s creates a gallery space. Everything you put on top of it really shows, nothing competes with it.” The second floor hosts an open kitchen, dining and formal living area. A geometric VeniceM light fixture featuring intersecting angles inspired the multi-level, linear kitchen design. That streamlined look is further enhanced by having every element fully integrated within the cabinetry. “We concealed everything that would make it look like a kitchen,” Bowen added. Custom-made, curved Holly Hunt sofas sporting velvet seats accentuated with a tight pinstripe detail and shaggy backs in a contrasting color of Kyle Bunting hides create a vibrant, yet intimate, living room. The adjoining main bathroom features reclaimed, glazed black Walker Zanger brick installed on the floor and walls, arranged in a herringbone pattern reminiscent of historic courtyards the couple strolled through in Savannah. A lucite four poster bed, in the primary bedroom, allows for unobstructed views of the room’s textured bronze wall coverings and green velvet drapes. There’s even a nod to the green found in the formal living room furnishings. That same shade wraps around the head, foot and sides of the bed. “We wanted the room to feel super warm and super luxe,” Bowen explained. While parts of the interior are always a work in progress, Bowen and Teabout agree that together they have created “an oasis in the center of the city.” As for the plans for that larger, centerpiece pool? Indefinitely on hold but, definitely not discarded. M Rob Bowen Design Group 727.822.8200 www.robbowendesign.com

METROHome At Home

Coastal Luxe and City Glam By Mary Lou Janson | Design by McKinlay Rose Interiors

S

oaring ceilings, waterfront views and a grand staircase leading to a second floor landing overlooking the foyer were among the many appealing features of this Beach Park estate. However, the interior design was less desirable due to a color scheme that included yellow walls, red drapes, black marble countertops and dark brown cabinets. “It just felt very masculine,” recalled Kelly Zara. “But, you can’t beat the location, the open bay view from the master bedroom balcony, or the boat access to the water from our dock.” Two years after purchasing the property, Kelly, her husband, Mike, and their young daughter now occupy the home of their dreams. The lighter, brighter interior incorporates glamour and luxury, yet maintains all of the functionality that the family needs. Designers Kristen McKinlay and Melanie Rose of McKinlay Rose Interiors

24

collaborated with Kelly to create a more dramatic décor combining a coastal luxe vibe with timeless elegance and transitional luxury. Boasting bold colors, such as turquoise and berry splash, distinctive custom window treatments, ranging from Damask wallpaper shimmering with crushed crystals to a marble-like wallpaper pattern complementing the marble countertop and vessel in the downstairs powder room, and metals used to frame furnishings and fashion the kitchen backsplash, the results rival a five-star hotel. “I like a mix of silver, gold and mirrors, different textures and materials and a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces,” Kelly said. Made-to-order furnishings and custom finishes were key to the transformation. The 72-inch tall, custom white leather tufted headboard in the master bedroom sparkles with Swarovski crystals. A recessed fireplace and mantle in the living room were reconstructed

and redesigned using limestone. Original works of art ranging from sculptures to paintings, light fixtures featuring handblown crystals to frosted glass, exquisitely crafted hand-knotted silk rugs to faux painted ceilings and white washed wood used to craft tables, chairs and a curio with agate hardware are among the exceptional elements found throughout this South Tampa coastal home. “Kelly is young and glamorous so we made sure the house reflected that in every detail. It’s a joy to work with a client who loves color and fabulous finds,” McKinlay added. “When we first started this project, the home was dark and very dated. Using crystals, shimmer, glamour and jewel tones, we brought this waterfront home back to life.” McKinlay Rose Interiors 813.981.0613 www.mckinlayrose.com
