Publisher’s Notes Lazy Days of Summer. While many people are relaxing and vacationing, there are so many reasons to get out and discover the Tampa Bay area. METRO’s found some Summer Hot Spots that will make the summer months just fly by, in the annual Summer Guide to Cool. Museums on each side of the Bay have exhibitions with a focus on fashion and art. The Tampa Museum of Art has the Norma Kamali exhibition with fashions from Kamali on display. METRO had a chance to chat with Kamali, when she attended the exhibition opening. The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg has famed photographer Horst P. Horst, and a collection of 180 of his works on display that have graced the pages of Vogue and House and Garden. Foodie features a new restaurant in Carrollwood. Dining in north Tampa just got more interesting with the opening of Sacred Pepper. Owner, Candy DeBartolo wanted to open a place where guests could share her family’s passion for food and style. The east coast of Florida offers great hotels, beaches and nature activities. Check out two options in Ft. Lauderdale that offer a great place to have a weekend escape. The Pelican Grand Resort’s location is right on the beach and offers stunning views of the morning sunrise. The Ft. Lauderdale Marriott North offers a “Paddle into Paradise” package that will have the whole family discovering nature in the eco-friendly waters of the intracoastal. While charity events do slow down during the summer, don’t miss Bay Area Advisors’ Martinis for Moffitt on Aug. 6 at the Straz Center. METRO is proud to sponsor events benefitting the arts, animals and medical causes in the upcoming months.

METRO: Who & what influenced you to

Norma Kamali Fashion, Fitness and Art

become interested in fashion? NORMA KAMALI: I initially wanted to be a painter. I loved anatomy and went to school on a painting scholarship. I had a very eccentric mother who made costumes and she made most

of my clothing, that we designed together. My mother created an environment where you could do, and be, whatever you wanted. There were no barriers. She taught life lessons through example. M: What inspires you? NK: Passion and inspiration are the lifeblood of creativity. My current passion is inspiring folks to embrace fitness, health, beauty and style in order to reach their potential. Life’s biggest challenge, in this fast-forward life, is finding balance. I am proud and fortunate to have been able to express myself creatively throughout my career. M: How do you know if your fashions will stand the test of time? NK: I started in the 70s by wearing and selling vintage clothing. I loved the fabrics and how I felt. I designed with knits and fabrics that could sculpt and expand. The designs allowed women to wear in different ways — off the shoulder, one shoulder, various necklines, etc. Style is more important than fashion. When you understand personal style, you are timeless. M: Tell us about the famous red one-piece swimsuit worn by Farrah Fawcett. NK: Farrah actually was carrying the red suit in her bag, when a photographer friend, Bruce McBroom suggested taking some photos on the beach. It wasn’t one of my favorites and actually, I get way too much credit for something that I really don’t deserve. M: What is next for Norma Kamali? NK: This is a disruptive time in history, so we need to think about reinvention. I need to tell people who and what we are and what we (the Norma Kamali brand) are about. I’m focusing on fitness, health, beauty and style.

On June 6 in New York City, Norma Kamali received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the highest award a fashion designer can obtain. Kamali’s fashion career has spanned five decades and she is a strong champion of women with a focus on fitness,

health, beauty, style and entrepreneurship. The new exhibition at the Tampa Museum of Art merges fashion and art. Norma Kamali was in Tampa for the opening of the exhibition and METRO had a chance to discuss her inspirations, recent lifetime achievement award and what is next for her.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MAGAZINES:

Tampa Theatre Gift Allows Investment Into The Future Building on what has been a successful year for the nonprofit Tampa Theatre, the majestic movie palace is the proud recipient of a half-million dollar gift from the family of Theatre Board Member, Anne Arthur Pittman, including her husband, Drew Pittman; her father and stepmother, Tom and Dixie Arthur; her mother and stepfather, Bretta Arthur Sullivan and The Honorable Don Sullivan; and her sister and brother-in-law, Tready and Thayer Smith. To properly and fully restore the historic landmark, its needs total more than $10 million, so the family gift will be earmarked for critical infrastructure upgrades. For Pittman, the love of Tampa Theatre is a family tradition, passed down through the generations. Her mother, Bretta, recalls fond memories of going to movies as a child. “The growth and revitalization of our downtown right now is exciting, and the fact that Tampa has this gorgeous, glamorous 90-year-old theater right in the middle of it all is amazing,” says Pittman. “I am proud to be part of the efforts to restore Tampa Theatre so that my future grandchildren can sit in the same theater where my own grandmother, Peggy, sat as a child.” “Anne and her family’s gift is greatly appreciated on so many levels,” said the Theatre’s Director of Development JL Wagner. “This is a gift that will inspire the next generation of Theatre patrons – the same way it has Anne and her family – who L and will enjoy a fully-preserved deserve historic landmark.”

n the heart of south Tampa is the neighborhood of Sunset Park, with its numerous canals and water access to Old Tampa Bay. The central location allows easy access to the Westshore Business District, downtown Tampa, or even across the bridge to St. Petersburg. Many of the street names throughout Sunset Park and adjacent Sunset Park Isles, are named for classic poets, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorn, Charles Lamb and others. There is a mix of architecture styles in the area consisting of Colonial, Florida Ranch, Contemporary and Mediterranean. Built in 2007, the Spanish-style home blends into the prestigious Tampa neighborhood. The two-story, four-bedroom and four and a half bath home is spacious with nearly 4,600 square feet. Set on a corner lot, the home looks stunning from the street with its outdoor lighting and lush landscaping. A brick sidewalk leads to the front entry with glass and a

The beautiful staircase leads to the upstairs where the master suite comes complete with a sitting area, built-ins and spa-like master bath. The additional two bedrooms each have their own bathroom and abundant closet space. For convenience, the laundry room is upstairs too. The bonus room/media room comes complete with surround sound. One of the upstairs bathrooms is custom painted above a gilded chair rail and built-in sink into a vanity. Sun and Sand is Grand Pelican Grand Beach Resort| By Ronda M. Parag

S

ummertime is the ideal time for a beach escape and there is no better place than Ft. Lauderdale’s Pelican Grand Beach Resort. As part of the Noble House Hotels & Resorts collection, Pelican Grand offers 156 guest rooms and suites. The causal Florida décor invites a relaxed vibe. Recent renovations in the rooms include new carpet, paint, wall coverings, linens, upholstery and artwork with a coastal-chic theme. Additional property renovations included the creation of the Sky Suite penthouse on the 12th floor, along with a newly decorated 11th Ocean View Suite, plus additional meeting space and the PURE Spa. The private beachfront of the resort provides a relaxing spot to soak up the sun. Chairs and umbrellas are provided to guests. While many rooms offer city views, make sure to reserve a beachfront view, where you’ll be able to watch a stunning sunrise from the private balcony. The resort’s zero entry pool provides plenty of relaxation, if you don’t want to deal with the beach sand. The resort also offers Ft. Lauderdale’s only lazy river. Kids and adults of all ages will

enjoy floating around the river. Activities around the pool are planned daily, weather permitting, of course. There really is no need to leave the resort for a delicious meal. OCEAN2000 serves up a tasty menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The dinner menu offers a selection of locally sourced seafood and grass fed beef, along with tapas plates. Lining the oceanfront verandah are classic rocking chairs, which are a great place to plant yourself for an evening cocktail. The restaurant also offers a series of monthly “Evening Under the Moon” events, where guests can dine under the full moon with a five course, pre-fix menu and view the moon and stars through a telescope. The Pelican Grand Beach Resorts location, directly on the beach, is also one of the only places in Fort Lauderdale to offer tables set atop sand dunes for intimate “Toes in the Sand” dining al fresco, by day or under the stars. The kids will enjoy a scoop or two of ice cream at the old-fashioned Emporium. Specialties include coffee treats, sundaes, shakes and gourmet bakery items. Located just off the lobby is

the O2K Lounge that provides light bites and hand-crafted cocktails. For added bliss and relaxation, the PURE Spa on the 11th floor rooftop offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, with its floor-to-ceiling windows. The small, yet impeccably designed Spa offers three-indoor treatment rooms and two-outdoor spa cabanas, along with two oceanfront manicure/pedicure stations. Whether it’s a facial, massage or body treatment, the team at PURE Spa will work together to create treatments called PURE You, where everything is personalized. Available now through September 30 is the “Summer Celebration Escape” that includes two-night ocean view suite accommodations, house made strawberry vanilla cake for two, Midsummer Eve dinner for two at OCEAN2000, fresh wildflower vase welcome amenity, strawberry infused mimosas upon arrival and evening turn down with wild flowers under guests’ pillows.
