Publisher’s Notes I am thankful for the Arts, from arenas, concert halls, theaters and even our local bars with live music.

The performing arts are back and they are needed more than ever. Yes, culture keeps us civilized, and provides a sense of community. People of all backgrounds can come together and enjoy a common experience. Maybe even walk away and remember we have more in common, than not. METRO checks in with a few of our favorite performing arts venues to see what changes have been made moving forward in these crazy times. October brings awareness to one of every woman’s greatest fear — breast cancer. In METRO’s women’s health feature, writer Mary Lou Janson speaks to two local physicians that diagnose and treat the disease that will affect one in eight women. There are many options for treatment and it is important to do your research. In METROHomeTour, we feature the stunning 6,120 square foot Modern Tudor Revival style home built by the luxury builder Steven Anthony Luxury Homes in Golf View. The home was designed with input from realtors Hughes Shelton group that insisted the new home design must blend with the existing neighborhood. Crespo Design Group was instrumental in selecting the finishes and fixtures for the home — creating a stylish interior. It’s no secret that we are out most evenings and we dine out a lot. The recent dinning experience at Rocco in Tampa Heights with the table side prepared Mozzarella Cart has us wanting to return for their delicious homemade pastas. We had the opportunity to support, and showcase, two stylish charity events — CITY: Arts + Fashion + Culture with the incredible fashion show by designer Bihpu Mohapatra and Bespoke’s A View To A Kill with fashions created by Bespoke that raised funds for the Children’s Cancer Center.

Adding Color and Beauty To The World Thru Art Meet Artist Britt Ford

Influenced by the colorful hues of her mother and grandmother, who decorated their homes in bright colors of pinks, greens, blues and golds, artist Britt Ford takes influence from them, and has created artistic expressions of her own with colorful pieces of wall art, stationery items, murals and more. Britt and her husband moved to Tampa in 2020 after living in Hoboken, NJ for 10 years where she was also influenced by historical buildings and brownstones, and the proximity to New York City. The selftaught artist has fallen in love with Hyde Park in Tampa. “I instantly fell in love with the area because it reminded me of New Jersey with the historical homes, but had a mix of Floridan architecture and bungalows,” said Britt Ford. “Tampa has provided me with so much growth and exploration, I feel my artwork has become more bright, exuberant and fun. I’m truly inspired by my surroundings, be it historical buildings/homes, flowers and fauna and local culture.” Exploring Tampa, Ford has a few favorite places. “My favorite restaurants are On Swann (best kale salad ever) and Ulele,” said Ford. “We also go to Gin Joint and Marriott Water Street with friends for cocktails.” The Four Green Fields reminds her and her husband, of their favorite Irish Bar in Hoboken, Finnegans. On the weekends, Ford adds, “We tend to walk around Hyde Park Village with our dog, and then go out on the boat and cruise around Tampa and St. Pete with friends.” The Britt Ford Pop Up gallery in Hyde Park opened in mid-September and will be open through February 28, 2022. The gallery is open daily and will be hosting fun Sip & Shops during the holiday season. Stop by for some cocktails, light bites and of course, the perfect artful gift for the season. INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP. GROUNDBREAKING CARE. Sherri Lewman joined Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in 2019 as Vice President of Service Lines, in which capacity she is responsible for executing TGH’s strategic plan. Through a service line model, hospitals like TGH can provide better interdisciplinary, streamlined care organized around specific disease states like orthopedics or oncology. Sherri has helped lead the development of these service lines

hyperfocused on multidisciplinary care. She and her team collaborate with world-renowned physicians and senior management across departments to create the best patient experience, while carrying out TGH’s vision to become the safest and most innovative academic health system in America. Sherri feels that the pandemic changed how the hospital worked and, as a result, it became nimbler and able to adapt more quickly. “The pandemic has shown us how valuable our 10 service lines are to ensuring the sustainability of the hospital. While our health care providers worked around the clock to care for patients, our team worked around the clock to ensure the hospital operated at its highest level. This way, our patients received the best care possible,” she explains. Her team helped create TGH Prevention Response Outreach (TPRO), a consulting service that offers the hospital’s expertise in infection prevention to organizations across the region. TPRO allows companies that are emerging from COVID-19 and reopening to the public to design processes that protect their team members and visitors. “We’ve had the chance to help massive organizations across the state to reopen,” she explains. “I am so proud of my team for their dedication, grit and passion to make this happen in such a short time.” One of the organization’s highest priorities is innovation, and the entire team is committed to utilizing new technologies to create better, safer environments for patients. Through a partnership with GE Healthcare, TGH uses predictive analytics to serve patients’ needs better and leverage technology to streamline care, reduce the length of stay and provide an overall better experience for those being served. “These innovations drive down operating costs and reduce wait times for beds, allowing members of our community more access to care,” says Sherri. Her leadership advice for any professional is to know their own worth. “At the end of the day, you must know who you are and the value that you bring into any situation. It allows an individual to be able to adapt to change, to step outside of their comfort zone, and to grow and develop their career,” says Sherri. < Sherri Lewman, MHA, CNMT Vice President of Service Lines at Tampa General Hospital

A Taste of Old Italy in Tampa Heights District

Rocca Tampa | By Ronda M. Parag

N

estled in the lively Tampa Heights district, we found a bit of the Old World. Handmade pastas and family recipes are a short walk from Armature Works and Tampa’s Riverwalk. Take a step inside Rocco, named for a the family that Rocco’s Owner and Chef Bryce Bonsack lived and worked with in Italy, while learning about Italian food and culture. Under the direction of Bonsack, Rocca offers a simple menu filled with tantalizing dishes of delicious starters, fresh pastas, meats and fish. We began our meal with an order of the calamari that was crispy and prepared salt and pepper style with pieces of jalapeño and a tomato passato for dipping. For the ultimate dining

experience, be sure to order the Mozzarella Cart. Prepared tableside, the server pours steaming hot water into mozzarella curds and mixes it together until it forms the most tasty and savory cheese. The cheese is then cut and placed on to a delicious plate of heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and topped with aged balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. It’s perfect to share with four people, or you can always take the remaining salad home. The pasta is the true hero on the menu and there is a selection of fresh, handmade pastas. We had the Tagliolini al Ragu that was pasta topped with beef ragu, basil and 30 month aged parmigiana. The portion is certainly large enough to share. For

meat lovers there is Bistecca, a 20 oz prime ribeye or for fish try the Branzino served with roasted potatoes, olives and pine nuts. If you saved room for dessert, the menu offers several flavors of gelato and sorbett. We finished our meal with the delicious Burnt Cheesecake and a tasty expresso martini. The bar area offers open seating with a great menu of hand-crafted cocktails, along with an impressive selection of wines by the glass or bottle. The decor is clean and simple, offering an inviting seat at the table with dishes that are fresh and flavorful. If you haven’t been to Rocco yet, make a reservation, and savor the taste at this gem of an Italian restaurant. M

Raise The Curtain! Unveiling The 2021-2022 Performing Arts Season

It has certainly been a challenging time for many businesses, but the creative arts have been hit substantially hard during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many theaters, museums and events began opening cautiously earlier this year, the performing arts venues around Tampa Bay have announced their seasons and the curtains are starting to rise. The resourceful art venues have certainly adapted and evolved throughout the entire pandemic with virtual programming, new health and safety protocols and procedures. However, as President and CEO of the Straz Center Judy Lisi said, “There is no replacement for the magic of a live show.”

The Straz Center

“The lows of the pandemic made us even more grateful for our incredible patrons and donors who believed in us during this challenging chapter,” said Judy Lisi. “The live entertainment industry was shuttered overnight at the start of this pandemic, but it led to great innovation with virtual programming and allowed our Riverwalk Stage to blossom. Our staff is energized and ready to raise the curtain, and because of the lows, we all value the shared experience of watching a show together more than ever before,” Lisi added. “We know our audiences are yearning to return to the Straz,” said Lisi. “We have a fully loaded Broadway season ahead that includes Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, Frozen and the return of Dear Evan Hansen. The Straz is back!” Tampa Theatre has been a gem in the heart of downtown Tampa for 95 years. “We reopened March 11, 2021 after a one year shut down,” said John Bell, President & CEO of Tampa

Theatre. “We feel confident we have done everything right in terms of protocols, procedures and improvements to allow us to re-open responsibly. None of us were trained in pandemic response, so our learning curve on this has been straight up. We partnered with Tampa General Hospital to advise us on these procedures and improvements, which was terrific to have their expertise.” While venues have re-opened, some patrons have not been quick to attend shows and concerts. “I am optimistic this will improve as the film and concert touring industries recover, but for the first six months of our re-opening there have been very few strong films or concerts availTampa Theatre able to book,” said Bell. “We are seeing more booking inquiries and activity from concert promoters and agents on the 2022 calendar, which is encouraging. I do think brighter days are ahead. Maybe that’s the eternal optimist in me, but we’re slowly getting there. I’m expecting a strong 2022, but I’ve also learned over the past 18 months that we just can’t predict with any certainty where we’ll be 6 months from now. Unless we have any more variant or covid curveballs, I’m expecting us to get back to something that feels like “normal” next year.” Last season, The Florida Orchestra performed more concerts for live audiences than any other orchestra in the country – 86 concerts at the The Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater safely. But now, the Orchestra are back in full force. When I gave that first downbeat, it felt like coming home,” said Music Director Michael Francis. The Florida Orchestra is the largest professional orchestra in the state, based in Tampa Bay. In the 2021-22 season, TFO will perform more than 100 concerts, featuring classical Masterworks, entertaining Pops, light favorites, rock concerts and more. The three main venues are the The Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Straz Center in Tampa and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. The season runs through May 2022.

The Duke Energy Center for the Arts – The Mahaffey Theater “Cirque Dreams Holidaze”

The Duke Energy Center for the Arts – The Mahaffey Theater in downtown St. Petersburg offers a 2,031-seat cultural jewel featuring elegant ballroom space, spectacular waterfront views, and European box-style seating. The Mahaffey hosts top-quality national and international artists and performances including pop, rock, comedy, theatre, dance, and the renowned Florida Orchestra. A highlight of the upcoming season includes Cirque Dreams Holidaze scheduled for November 30. The show is a whimsical Broadway-style musical infused with contemporary circus artistry. Like many venues, Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Bilheimer Capital Theatre made changes in their operations to re-open safely. “A new hospital-grade HVAC-PHI Air Purification System was installed throughout Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, classrooms and administrative offices,” said

Susan Crockett, Ruth Eckerd Hall President & CEO. “The system continually treats the air, eliminating viruses, mold, bacteria and air pollutants, reducing the risk of airborne illness.” Many venues installed and adapted technology to offer contactless entry and easy ordering systems for food and drinks. “We also offer mobile ordering for our customers to place their food and beverage orders at Ruth Eckerd Hall,” said Crockett. This app allows guests to place their orders and receive a text message when the order is ready for pick-up.” “Later this year, we will open the England Family Music Garden, located on the east side entrance at Ruth Eckerd Hall,” adds Crokett. “At this reimagined outdoor performance space, guests can enjoy refreshments and live, local music under the big oak, (weather permitting), prior to scheduled performances inside Ruth Eckerd Hall.” While the health and safety of patrons, performers and staff are always a top priority, it is important to check each venues protocols and requirements prior to attending any performances. Powerful Tools for Dealing with Breast Cancer By Mary Lou Janson

Having a female friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker who has battled breast cancer may be more common that many realize. The National Breast Cancer Foundation estimates a woman is diagnosed with the disease every two minutes. In fact, one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Statistics aside, it can still be quite a shock when the person who is diagnosed with breast cancer is you. As annual screening mammograms and self-administered breast exams

increasingly become a routine part of women’s health regimens, and in the absence of any other symptoms, it’s easy to assume you are in the clear. It’s also important to remember that detecting cancer and preventing it are two very different tasks. Once the initial shock subsides, it will be helpful to prepare for the journey ahead. Knowing what to do, when to do it, who to turn to and what to expect can all contribute to keeping a clear mind, remaining calm and adhering to the recommended patient protocols.

w

hether a suspicious shadow shows up on a screening mammogram or a lump is discovered during a breast exam first indicates an irregularity, don’t jump to any conclusions. The shadow may be just that and the cyst may be benign. The next step will be to learn more. Additional imaging tests such as a 3D mammogram, MRI scan or breast ultrasound may be prescribed to take a closer look for signs of cancers, tumors or cysts. Or a small amount of breast tissue may need to be extracted and examined. “We will call you to get you in for the procedure pretty quickly. We want to get the ball rolling and help to relieve some of the anxiety,” said Dr. Mia Jackson, breast radiologist and medical director of breast imaging for St. Joseph’s Hospitals. When biopsies are called for, Jackson personally meets with the patient and a nurse navigator to discuss the procedure and why it Dr. Mia Jackson is necessary. “I try to prepare people as much as I can. Knowledge is power,” Jackson said. The radiologist may be the initial point person encountered during this medical odyssey but will likely continue as a member of a multi-disciplinary team that will convene throughout the patient’s care. That network of medical professionals is typically comprised of a breast surgeon, pathologist, oncologist and radiation oncologist. What happens next depends on the stage (how far the disease has progressed), what type of cancer it is and how quickly it is spreading. In general, there are five treatment options, and most treatment plans include a combination of the following: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies. Some are local, targeting just the area around the tumor. Others are systemic, targeting your whole body with cancer fighting agents, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Determining the best treatment for each patient is a collaborative effort designed to consider all of the options, monitor the patient’s condition and make any treatment adjustments as needed, explained Dr. Robert Gabordi, BayCare breast oncology surgeon and medical director of the breast program at St. Joseph’s Hospitals. “It’s a very dynamic process and one that requires constant attention, especially at the beginning of the diagnosis,” Gabordi said. “We want to make sure that nothing gets missed so we

30

www.TampaBayMetro.com

have everyone weigh in on their area of expertise. It’s not just the surgeon deciding everything. For example, we want to know the medical oncologist’s opinion about chemo therapy or whether the radiation doctor thinks radiation is needed or not.” “The first goal is to cure the cancer, fix it and make it go away. Then we shift to prevent it from ever coming back. By working together throughout Dr. Robert Gabordi this process, at each step we can escalate or deescalate therapy as needed,” he added. Providing patients with convenient access to medical facilities and personnel, administering tests and procedures in surroundings that help to put patients at ease, and offering state-of-the-art tools, technologies and treatments are part of the comprehensive approach that’s now available to breast cancer patients. Tampa General Hospital opened the 5,000-square-foot Breast Health Center in North Tampa last year. This latest dedicated cancer care facility marks the third of such treatment centers, joining the TGH Cancer Center on the hospital’s main campus in South Tampa and the TGH Brandon Healthplex. Patients can schedule appointments within 48 to 72 hours after being diagnosed and are able to access comprehensive breast health services within this single location. The new North Tampa facility has been designed with the patient experience in mind, from access to the latest technologies and research to calming interiors. The center also offers acupuncture for managing pain, alleviating post-treatment side effects and calming general unease. “Helping those undergoing treatment remain upbeat throughout the journey can be invaluable to the recovery of these patients,” Jackson added. “We try to be really encouraging because a positive attitude can help get them through the process. One patient had 20 friends who were waiting outside of the hospital for her during her surgery. That kind of support can go a long way toward helping you heal.” M

Raising the Bar for Tampa’s Luxury Living Tampa’s Ritz-Carlton Residences By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Jonathan Fanning

I

t was a night of celebration under the stars, as only The Ritz-Carlton does it, at the new sales gallery opening for The Ritz-Carlton Residences Tampa. According to the sales team lead by The Toni Everett Co., more than 50 percent of the 89 residences and 12 townhomestyle villas have been sold. The Related Group’s development team and creative partners for the property were in attendance, along with many of the new property owners. Related Group’s President Jon Paul Perez said there is such a feeling of excitement around the project. “It’s a developer’s dream, where everything will be at your fingertips. We have created a vacation that is your home,” said Perez. “We are raising the bar for Tampa’s luxury living.” Will Meyer, Co-owner of NYC-based Meyer David Design Studio, said that the overall interior design responds to the Bayshore site. “We are able to translate

54

www.TampaBayMetro.com

the luxury, and able to bring beauty to life reflected in the interiors,” said Meyer. As part of Related Group’s core values is the commitment to installing museum quality artwork throughout all their properties. Art work will be spread throughout The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Tampa in the lobby, corridors, exteriors and will include murals, sculptures and paintings according to Michael Hammon, Senior Vice President at the Related Group. “It’s a rally cry for residents,” said Hammon. Related Group is also rehabilitating the historic fountain that serves as the only relic from the Centro Español Hospital on the site. It was once the only hospital in Tampa Bay to treat Hispanic patients in the 1900’s, and its fountain is now a symbol of the city’s immigrant history that will again serve as the property’s centerpiece. “By saving the fountain, we will save a bit of history for Tampa,” adds Hammon.

A highlight of the artwork collection now on display is the bronze statue by Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero titled Mujer Vestida, 1997. The bronze sculpture is positioned lovingly on the exterior of the property, along the sidewalk on Bayshore, for all to see and admire. The artists son, author Juan Carlos Botero was in attendance at the gallery opening and spoke about the book he has written about his father, “The Art of Fernando Botero.” Juan Carlos shared some of the process that his father uses to create his famous, robust bronze statues. “Art creates aesthetic pleasure,” said Juan Carlos. “Some people think it is the glorification of fatness, but really volume creates sensuality. It’s a sense of monumentality.” M For more information on The Ritz-Carlton Residences Tampa, visit theresidencestampa.com or call 813.448.3127 to schedule a private tour.

A Passion for Wine Wine Cellars & Caves at Home By Ronda M. Parag Photos by Florida Visual Marketing

W

hether you want to convert the space underneath the stairs or design an entire room, there are many options for creating a wine cellar or cave at home. Utilizing expert craftsmanship and innovative technology, Cave a’ Vin can create one-of-a-kind custom designed cellars and humidors to fit any space. Regardless of design style, wine storage solutions can be created to fit any aesthetic and are fast becoming a focal point within a room. From traditional to ultra-modern, wine cellars reflect the décor and personality of each homeowner. The latest trend calls for a modern look, rather than the traditional Old World cavelike cellar. Contemporary solutions offer floor to ceiling displays using glass and metal with various LED lighting options to showcase the collection, regardless of size. Whether the design calls for metal racking or traditional wood storage, the choice and options are vast. From cellars created entirely out of glass to custom wood entrance doors mixed with wrought iron and hand carvings, each cellar is built to standards to keep the wine at the ideal storage temperature of 55 degrees. As homeowners add these wine spaces, they can be found in closet spaces, entryways, former powder rooms, bathrooms or even the hallway (called a “wine wall”). Through design and integration, these wine rooms are becoming the focal point of the room, creating the perfect party room. M For more information, visit www.caveavin.us.

HOME TOUR Honoring The Neighborhood By Mary Lou Janson | Photos by Tony Sica Photography

G

olf View’s stately mansions, old growth trees, brick-lined streets and picturesque, central location make it one of South Tampa’s most desirable places to live. When developer Steven Anthony Rogai acquired a prime piece of real estate within the exclusive enclave, he soon realized the signature home he planned to build would need to reflect the history and heritage of the community.

58

www.TampaBayMetro.com

The custom-built residence needed to stand out, but also blend in with the distinguished neighborhood. Rogai, CEO and President of Steven Anthony Luxury Homes, was inspired by a traditional, time-honored design that features such defining details as multiple pitched roofs, front-facing gables, and wood-accented facades.

“To keep to the style of this neighborhood, we created our own rendition of Modern Tudor Revival.” — Steven Anthony Rogai, CEO and President of Steven Anthony Luxury Homes

www.TampaBayMetro.com

59

Instead of strictly adhering to the antiquated Tudor design, he updated, and upgraded, the concept to create a beautiful contemporary take that is dazzling, not dated. “We did not want to build a boxy, modern house in this area,” said Rogai. “That was never my intent. To keep to the style of this neighborhood, we created our own rendition of Modern Tudor Revival. We designed something that is more fitting to the neighborhood.” While still in the framing and drywall stage of the build out, a family relocating to Tampa from Naples, FL closed on the house. Designer Enrique Crespo, who was already working with Rogai on selecting finishes and fixtures for the two-story, 6,120-square-foot residence, was contracted by the new owners to add their aesthetic and style preferences throughout the interior. By late September, construction was completed, state-ofthe-art technology to custom closets and cabinets installed, wall treatments to flooring finished and the six bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom home was move-in ready. The deep, wide lot also encompasses a lushly landscaped backyard highlighted by a pool and elevated spa, large lanai and outdoor kitchen, media room, open concept Great Room and chef’s kitchen, wine room, Butler’s pantry, and three-car garage. “This family has five children, so the interior design of the house needed to be practical for them as well as fashionable, stylish and luxurious,” said Crespo who, along with Crespo Design Group senior designer Lisa Clark, selected the textured wallpapers, custom-made furnishings and original art works found throughout the home. Crespo describes the clients as “sophisticated, welltraveled and not afraid of being bold and making bold choices.” Those style statements included commissioning a vibrant, hand-painted mural for the formal dining room walls and installing colorful Missoni wallpaper on a walk-in closet ceiling. “Everything had to look good and be durable. We really listened to their needs and how they lived,” Crespo added. Rogai learned about the highly desirable listing through the Hughes Shelton Group, the exclusive sales and marketing team for Steven Anthony Luxury Homes, according to Jeff Shelton, co-founder of Hughes Shelton. “We recommended Steven Anthony Luxury Homes purchase the property and either renovate or build new,” said Shelton. “Initially, Steve considered building a more modern home but the other co-founder of Hughes Shelton, Mike Hughes, felt the home must reflect the neighborhood and pushed for a more traditional home.” “I think this is what makes the partnership so strong. Steve is not afraid to ask for the Realtor’s advice. He knows we are dealing with buyers every day. He can build the best house but if it doesn’t feature the spaces or layout that people are looking for today, its chances of selling at the highest

www.TampaBayMetro.com

61

price are slim. Steve did everything right with this property which is why it was a record-breaking sale for Tampa,” added Shelton, principal agent, Hughes Shelton Group/ Compass Realty. The insight, expertise and experience of the project’s professional partnerships resulted in a design that complements its community, an interior that is luxurious but quite livable and upgrades that create an easy, yet elegant, lifestyle. “Today’s consumer demands the technology and the upgrades we provide. We are starting to get a lot of people following us for our designs but despite this, I try to make every home unique. We have not built the same home twice since our inception,” Rogai said. “This Modern Tudor Revival is something nobody had ever done before. Tudor is a classic, less frequently replicated style of home but that didn’t scare me. I wanted to honor the 100-year-old home that once sat on the site while giving it a modern spin with new, more functional finishes and technological advances.” M
