Publisher’s Notes Celebrating 20 years of Tampa Bay METRO.

We are getting ready to start a brand new year and certainly believe that 2021 will be better for us all. We’ve reached a milestone with this issue beginning our 20th year of publishing Tampa Bay METRO. If our office walls could talk, there are many things that we have started, stopped, changed and adapted to over these years. One thing that has remained constant is our desire to publish a quality publication that showcases the people, businesses and places that make Tampa Bay a great place to live, work and play. We are grateful for the long time support of our advertisers and loyalty of our readers. We would not be here if it wasn’t for you! In this issue, we have METRO’s Annual Private School Survey that highlights 44 schools and is a great community resource for parents looking to provide a private school education for their children. In the feature story Academics In A Pandemic, we discover the adjustments and changes made to allow for in-school learning at several private schools across Tampa Bay. We also catch up with Actress, Singer, DJ Lauren Mayhew, a Berkeley Prep grad, that has returned home to Tampa from NYC during the pandemic. She graced our cover 15 years ago in 2005, and we had a chance to connect and see her recent successes. The wedding and event industry has been particularly challenged during the pandemic, but we can see some light at the end of the tunnel as weddings and events are slowly starting to happen. We have the special section, METRO Weddings + Events, where we showcase the creativity and beauty of love. Some travel has started to happen as some countries will allow us to fly. Consider a destination wedding, or vow renewal, at the Haven Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook @tampabaymetro and watch www.tampabaymetro.com for stories on Super Bowl LV. We hope you relax, recharge and spend some time with family and friends, and enjoy the holiday season. Enjoy,

The Dalí Museum Offers Immersive Art Experience

© 2020 Grande Experiences

Tantalize the senses with one of the most influential Western artists, Vincent Van Gogh in the latest special exhibition at the Dalí Museum, Van Gogh Alive. Featuring more than 3,000 Van Gogh images at enormous scale, synchronized to a powerful classical score, this immersive, multi-sensory art experience harnesses technology and music to open a new window into the painter’s artistic genius. “The Dalí Museum is at the forefront of technology, embracing new methods to engage guests in unconventional ways,” said Hank Hine, executive director of The Dalí. “Just as we have used technology to bring both Dalí and his works to life, Van Gogh Alive offers a unique installation that expands how we are able to experience art.” Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art. The son of a Protestant pastor, Van Gogh made an unsuccessful attempt at theological studies before turning to art at the age of 27. Completely self-taught, Van Gogh was

8

one of the most prolific artists of his time. In 10 years, he produced more than 2,000 works but only sold one work during his lifetime. His suicide in 1890 brought him into the public imagination as a misunderstood genius who continues to inspire new generations.

his exquisite mansion is truly the only one of its kind in Florida. It was designed and built by European Artesian craftsmen who came to Tampa to construct this incredibly beautiful home. The major block structure is finished with all marble covering on the outside. The current owners have transformed the interior with a contemporary look and feel while keeping the original

integrity of the home. The grand entry is adorned with marble flooring and an impressive two-story wedding staircase, also constructed out of marble. Apart from the grand entry, the home is built with wide marble hallways that leads you to oversized family room, state of the art chef’s kitchen and dining room which overlooks the almost six acres manicured grounds.

The ball room with musician’s stage now has been converted to a formal room for more contemporary dinner parties, while keeping the intricate carved ceilings. It is important to note that the original wood floor, wood paneling and moldings are still in place for anyone who desires to restore the original ballroom details. Many of the rooms downstairs open to grand marble terraces that surround the west sunset side of the six lawns. These areas are ideal for al fresco dining at any time of day. Additional rooms in this residence include a paneled private library, tranquil yoga room, and additional bedrooms both downstairs and upstairs. The spacious bedrooms on the second floor all offer ensuite bathrooms for the utmost privacy. The master suite is complete with its own living room, fireplace and spa-like master bathroom. Across the home is an expansive attendant’s quarters situated over the garage. The pool, pavilion, and the basketball court are in their own setting, but compliment the overall recreational space that is offered. While this home offers expansive rooms and soaring ceilings from 12 to 22 feet; it is complemented by warm homelike intimacy. The home’s interior transmits a light and airy ambiance throughout. This property has been truly tailored to both elaborate entertaining and ultimate privacy with its gated entry and exit gates – all situated within the Avila Golf and Country Club’s private community. Bringing Steakhouse Sizzle to the Suburbs By Ronda M. Parag

T

he creators and owners of Datz Restaurant Group, Roger and Suzanne Perry, have added another restaurant concept to their portfolio of eateries. Amid the pandemic, the Perry’s moved forward with adding a steakhouse concept — Donovan’s Modern American Meatery to their hospitality group that includes Datz, Dough, Dr. BBQ and two ghost kitchens, Cluck Yeah! and Bougie Pizza. Located in the Winthrhop Town Centre in Riverview, Donovan’s is named for Roger’s late father, Russell “Donovan” Perry, and is inspired by his childhood growing up on a modest family farm in rural Ohio. The menu at Donovan’s is filled with items of the family’s ethos on the farm of, “If we didn’t grow it, we don’t eat it.” Certified Angus Beef ®, American

Wagyu, Brasstown grass-fed steaks, duck, house-cured bacon steaks, and wild game are paired with potatoes cooked in every way imaginable: baked, fried, mashed, au gratin, and even sweet potatoes. Other menu items included flame-grilled seasonal vegetables like zucchini, asparagus, artichokes and brussels sprouts; onion rings; cauliflower parmesan, grilled sweet corn and classic rich creamed spinach. It is hard to choose just one side. I recommend you order several, as they are perfect for sharing. Donovan’s also has seafood choices with a creamy lobster mac & cheese, crab cakes, grilled oysters, plus a raw bar offering a selection of oysters, shrimp and a tantalizing seafood tower. Always looking to be creative and unique, the menu offers an edible tallow candle that as the herb butter melts is perfect to

cover the hearty-crusted bread. The kitchen is under the direction of Executive Chef Lee Jasper who oversees the delicious and cooked-to-perfection steaks, seafood and sides in the open concept kitchen that has a custom made double-wood fired grill and oven. Steaks come out sizzling in there own pan with an oversized handle. The bar menu was created by Tampa mixologist Dean Hurst using the freshest combination of ingredient to sip and savor. There are cocktail classics with a twist including a Steak House Martini with smoked prime rib and blue cheese stuffed olives, Apple Cider Old-Fashioned and Queen of Hearts with Hendrick’s gin, hibiscus, cardamon, lemon and egg white. For a hearty meal in a comfortable setting, Donovan’s doesn’t disappoint. M

Academics In A Pandemic How COVID-19 Led To Changes for Area Private Schools By Mary Lou Janson

Young student safely enjoying classtime at Corbett Preparatory School in Tampa

Local private school officials faced a steep learning curve last spring when the risk of infection from COVID-19 brought an abrupt end to classroom instruction, forcing students to learn online to keep up with their studies. Administrators and faculty members throughout the Tampa Bay area quickly organized task forces and drafted comprehensive action plans in anticipation of welcoming students back to campus for the 2020-2021 school year.

T

he Herculean effort required in planning for various pandemic scenarios (in person learning, virtual learning or a hybrid approach), taking measures, and measurements, to make classrooms safer (distancing desks, installing protective partitions and cleaning more frequently), as well as, adding air ionizing technology and ultra violet light treatments, purchasing hand washing stations and hand sanitizer dispensers and minimizing direct contact by downsizing the number of students per class, as well as, controlling crowd flow with one-way stairwells. “It was an immense amount of work, but we wanted to keep students safe and let teachers teach,” said Michael Johnson, Associate Head of School at Corbett Preparatory School in Tampa, recalling the determination and dedication exhibited by all involved, from faculty and bus drivers to front office personnel and families. “None of this happened because of the success of one or two people. Our entire community gave us a chance for success.” Months into the current school year, all of the planning, preparation and implementation appear to have paid off. Linking students with classrooms via video technology like Zoom continues to be an option available at most private schools, but high numbers have returned to campuses, either part- or full-time. However, Berkeley Preparatory School has only a handful of students who, due to significant medical issues, remotely learn. “We weren’t willing to push our teachers to simultaneously teach live and online,” said Berkeley’s Headmaster Joseph W. Seivold. “An online educational experience is not parallel to a rich and robust in-person experience. We just did not see that as being sustainable.” In addition to most of the 1,386 Pre-K - 12th Grade students reporting to the Tampa school, there has also been fewer pupils missing school for any reason. “Absenteeism is way down among students. Classes are full every day. I think we all recognize the importance and value of being together and have an elevated sense of gratitude for each other like never before,” Seivold added. With new protocols in place, school personnel and pupils have adjusted to wearing masks, observing social distancing, monitoring temperatures and skipping the hugs and handshakes they used to exchange. Still, as smoothly as things seem to be going, officials remain diligent in their efforts to closely track what is happening, in both classrooms and communities, to remain safe and, even more critical, remain open. “We created a task force at each academic level and then brainstormed, researched and shared strategies,” said Mark Heller, Head of School, at Academy at the Lakes in Land O’Lakes. “We continue to develop our plan because we continuously learn how to do things better.”

As students adjust academically, Heller worries about the pandemic’s emotional toll. “The nature of school is so human and personal. It’s about connecting through physical proximity. That is so essential and so important that it makes it feel like a major tool in our toolbox has been taken away,” Heller added. Responsible for almost 1,000 students ranging in age from three years old through teenagers, Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg’s Health & Safety Task Force continues to meet weekly with input provided by faculty, parents and medical professionals from St. Anthony’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and Tampa General Hospital. “We spent the summer to prepare for opening in person,” said Rachel Martin Barrett, Shorecrest’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “We have learned as we’ve gone and our plan has served us well. We also have a Social and Emotional Task Force that is led by school counselors to provide additional support for students and their families. We considered the physical health of people during this time, but we also wanted to be mindful of the social and emotional effects of COVID on our community.” Among the many changes enacted in response to COVID-19 are the following: • Corbett Preparatory loaned families MacBook Pros and printers that were scarce due to the pandemic. Academy at the Lakes issued every kindergarten through sixth grade student iPads loaded with programs necessary for their schoolwork. • Teachers became adept at managing video conferencing for group and individual outreach. At Shorecrest Preparatory, microphones helped to amplify instructor voices muffled by masks. • Four large tents added to Berkeley’s exterior grounds created extra space for classes. Maintaining the six hand washing stations placed throughout the grounds required a new full-time hire. • At St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School, class sizes were reduced from 20 students to 10, requiring the number of classrooms to double. Instead of students moving from classroom-to-classroom for various subjects, teachers make the transition. “We have worked hard to reopen and reunite, but it’s been worth all of the work,” said Matt Schifeling, Associate Head of School at St. Mary’s in Tampa. We had our largest enrollment ever at the start of the year and have been in-person ever since. It’s been a trying time but a lot of people have come together and worked hard for the same goal – to give the children a wonderful educational experience that mirrors the experience that they would normally have at St. Mary’s.” M

Love Knows No Bounds The Haven Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa | By Ronda M. Parag

I

magine having your wedding on the beach overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea in Cancun Mexico. I visited the property back in early 2020 prior to the pandemic, and now that travel to Mexico has opened up, it’s time to share the stunning property. The expert planners at the Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa are ready to assist in planning your dream wedding and creating a blissful and memorable experience. The resort setting offers wedding and reception locations including the beach, a beautiful oceanside wood deck that’s part of Vora Mar restaurant, a second floor glass corridor with full horizon views of the ocean, and many more options where couples can exchange vows. The all-suite, all-adult resort opened in late 2018, and is one of Riviera Maya’s newest and most luxurious resorts. The all-inclusive resorts offers 24/7 room service, open bars, and

nightly entertainment. Guests will love the fine dining options from the Mexican Steakhouse offering sizzling tomahawks and dried rib eyes, to sushi and teppanyaki at the Japanese Fusion restaurant, and Mediterraneanfocused dishes at the signature restaurant, Olios. For a VIP experience, I’d recommend the Serenity Club. These suites offer: guaranteed ocean views with either a private swim-out pool or a balcony with a private hot tub overlooking the ocean. Serenity Club guests also have exclusive access to the Vistas Restaurant that provides delicious sunrise breakfast overlooking the ocean and lunch - this is exclusive for Serenity guests. Not to mention, all Serenity Club guests also receive a complimentary round of hydrotherapy and discounted spa services. Relax and recharge with a range of services available from The MySenses Spa.

Brides will feel extra special, as there is only one wedding planned for each day with a choice of design and décor options ranging from modern to vintage, to boho and custom. Planning is so easy with the on-site expert wedding planners. The luxurious bridal suite provides plenty of room to prepare for the special day. Haven also provides a team of highly-experienced, in-house photographers through Click Moments. The team is led by Felix Barra, a globally recognized and award-winning bridal and fine art photographer. A “micro” wedding is ideal for those couples wishing to keep things small. Haven has created several packages including “Tie the Knot” package ideal for up to 20 guests and a special vow renewal package — “You’re Still the One” that offers a ceremony, personalized planning, bouquet, cake and much more. Finding Your Dream Gown Bridal Trends 2021 | By Ronda M. Parag

L

ove is the air and couples are still getting married even if they have had to postpone or adjust their original ceremony and receptions plans. Many of the designers chose to do virtual fashions shows, but still filled the runway with gowns that were unique, creative and stylish. The top 10 runway trends included cut outs, backless and barely there lace, accents and balloon sleeves, tea length dresses, ruffles, square necklines, capes, subtle sparkle, bows, two-piece dressing including pants, and slip dresses. Regardless of your personal gown style, lace, sequins or other textures and embellishments will allow gowns to be appreciated from any distance — indoors, outdoors or on screen. “There are stunning styles with intricate lace detail with multi-layering fabrics to add texture and dimension, which helps the dress to pop in photos,” says Danielle DiMarte from The White Magnolia Bridal Collection. “We are also seeing strapless make a comeback this season.” With rich fabrics, attention to detail and innovative styling and fit, any girl can find a multitude of designers to create her dream gown. “It is so important that brides shop with a relaxed mindset, but also prepare for finding the one at any moment, it happens when you least expect it,” says DiMarte. “This past year has tested the event industry and it just goes to show how amazing and resilient this industry really is!” However, with many business challenges for designers, manufacturers and retailers, DiMarte does recommend planning ahead and giving yourself time to find a dress without stress, and allowing time for unexpected delivery delays. “Enjoy the whole process, it is so special,” adds DiMarte. Topsy-Turvy Tipples & Tea When: February 7, 2020 Where: The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes An Alice in Wonderland-inspired affair provided guests an immersive experience with entertaining hosts guiding guests through a menu of tantalizing tea party cocktails and bites. A curiously unique grown-up “tea” party on the lawn, featuring Hendrick’s Gin libations and an array of fanciful tidbits and treats. Hendrick’s Gin’s unique, yet curious, flavor comes from a combination of roses and cucumbers with a divine blend of eleven other botanicals. The Hendrick’s Gin team hosted a gala dinner event to feature fun creative Hendrick’s cocktails for 72 guests on the Da Vinci Lawn at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. The idea came from similar events the team has held around the country and was an inspiration to have guests enjoy an interactive evening and education about gin and gin cocktails! Hendrick’s is known for their unusual and creative events and this was no exception. The team hosted guests and partnered with Fever-Tree Mixers to create fun, unique cocktails in a Mad Hatter type tea party. The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes culinary team prepared items that paired perfectly with drinks and the guests were entertained by actors and jugglers who told stories of gin and the amazing world of Hendrick’s. The evening culminated with a specialty dessert and cocktail and each guest was given a balloon and sharp needle. As each guest popped their balloons butterflies emerged and flew off into the night! An amazing time had by all! Photos: The Photography Concierge
