Publisher’s Notes Summertime is here,

but in Tampa Bay it sometimes seems like summer all year long. The temperatures rise, kids are home and it is the ideal time to relax with family and friends, take a vacation or weekend getaway, and enjoy all the beauty of the area beaches. It’s METRO’s annual Summer Guide to Cool and we’ve found 40 places to discover, eat, drink and play. We also take a look at six old-time Florida attractions in Travel Back in Time – METRO’s Retro Guide to Old Florida. Support Feeding Tampa Bay and raise awareness and funds, to help feed those that are in need, by attending one of the Epic Chef Showdowns at the Epicurean Hotel Theatre. The seven week competition with area chefs begins July 15 and ends August 26. Don’t miss the fashion event of the season: CITY 2019 to benefit the Tampa Museum of Art on September 14. We had a chance to interview the designer, Angel Sanchez, and can’t wait for him to debut his 2020 designs at the runway fashion fundraiser for the museum. In METROHome Tour, we take a peek inside the elegant and spacious Oaks Estate located on Lake Thonotosassa, with its stunning attention to design details. Built for a luxurious lifestyle, the home has resort-style amenities with indoor and outdoor pools, retro game room, bowling alley, massage and steam rooms and so much more. It has been nearly two years since Hurricane Maria slammed into the island of Puerto Rico. With a major renovation, the Caribe Hilton is ready to showcase the historic hotel and welcome guests. It’s an easy escape with direct flights from TIA. Don’t want to fly? Consider a staycation at The Epicurean Hotel, in the heart of South Tampa, offering a luxurious and relaxing stay with delicious dining and cocktails right on property. While it seems that many families escape for the summer, there are still plenty of those that choose to stay in the area. It’s a great time to explore and support many of the local charities and events.

Gabriel Lopez, Sous Chef of Mise en Place, 2018 Winner of the Epic Chef Showdown

Feel the Heat at the Epic Chef Showdown Tampa Bay chefs are heating up the kitchen this summer for the 5th Annual “Epic Chef Showdown” held in the Epicurean Theatre. Created by the Epicurean Hotel and Feeding Tampa Bay, the seven week competition is designed with a purpose to bring together culinary talents, local foodies, and community philanthropists to celebrate the common love of food, and raise awareness of the local issue of food insecurity. Participating local restaurants include: Ichicoro Imoto, The Mill, Mise en Place, Noble Crust, Oxford Exchange, Parkshore Grill, Red Mesa and Rooster & the Till. Each week, the event will be hosted by Chef Jeff Philbin of “MasterChef” fame. It works like this: two competing chefs will receive a mystery box of ingredients, and will be challenged to create two unique dishes under the pressure of the clock. When time is up, each dish will be judged

“We’re very proud that this amazing event is now in its fifth year, and that each year we’ve been able to expand it to better showcase our incredible partner, Feeding Tampa Bay, and support their mission of bringing awareness to the hunger issues in our community,” said Kevin Scott, general manager of the Epicurean Hotel. and one restaurant will be eliminated, with the winner moving on to the next round. Scheduled to judge the competition this

year include: former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ player Vincent Jackson, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, WFLA’s Stacie Schaible and Ian Beckles from WDAE sports radio. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the meaningful relationships and conversations the event has created around the mission of hunger relief,” said Thomas Mantz, President & CEO of Feeding Tampa Bay. “Each and every one of us has a connection to food in some way, whether it be a favorite childhood memory, a time when your family pauses from the daily hustle and bustle, or – in the case of our amazing chefs – an art that you share with others. There are many reasons to celebrate food and the very life it gives us all. With the vision of a hunger-free Tampa Bay, we aim to create these memories and moments for hundreds of thousands of families across the Tampa Bay region.”

The Epic Chef Showdown begins July 15, 2019 and the finale will be August 26, 2019. Visit www.EpicChefTampaBay.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

Stay Cool as Two Museums Showcase Contemporary Exhibitions Summer time is hot, so step inside to cool off at local museums on either side of the Bay. The Tampa Museum of Art presents Tableau and Transformation: Photography from the Permanent

Collection on view through October 6, 2019, while the Museum of Fine Arts St. Pete showcases works of paper at Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami on view through September 29, 2019.

The photography exhibition includes 50 photographs from the mid 1960s – the early 2000s, from the museums own permanent collection. The exhibition looks at how artists have used distinct darkroom effects and studio practices to create new narratives in photography. Artists such as James Casebere, Robert Cumming, Stephen Frailey, Sandy Skoglund, and William Wegman create constructed environments, often blurring the boundaries of truth and fiction in their images. Photographers Blythe Bohnen, Duane Michals, Arnulf Rainer, Lucas Samaras, and Cindy Sherman, examine the transformation of one’s self as a means to explore identity, gender, and place. “Many of the photographs featured in Tableau and Transformation have not been on view for 25 years,” said Joanna Robotham, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. “I am pleased to include a selection of works from Trenam Law’s holdings and to highlight the shared history of our two photography collections.” The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Frank E. Duckwall Foundation and Trenam Law.

Museum of Fine Arts St. Pete Develop a new appreciation for works with paper at the exhibition Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami, at the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Petersburg. Traditionally thought of as children’s art projects, the amazing origami works, of the nine talented artists on display, will have you rethinking that. The 20 works use light, shadow, nature and even math and science, to elevate contemporary origami. The large scale installations and suspended pieces are pushing the medium of paper and paper folding. “Paper is a fascinating medium and we’re excited to present these brilliant contemporary works of art, in such an immersive way, that reflect how origami has evolved as an art form,” said Executive Director Kristen A. Shepard. There is also an interactive paper-folding area where museum guests can create paper cranes and other origami designs. Above the Fold is curated by Meher McArthur and the tour is organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

The Junior League of Tampa Aims to Eliminate Diaper Needs The Junior League of Tampa’s Diaper Bank committee aims to eliminate diaper need in Hillsborough County, and has distributed over 100,000 diapers to local non-profit organizations in its inaugural year. Diaper need, the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy, impacts 1 in 3 US families. The cost of diapering is a heavy financial burden on families with babies averaging 8 to 12 diapers per day at a cost of $70 to $80 per month, per child. The urgency of this financial situation is compounded by the fact that there is no state or federal child safety-net program that allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers.

The home’s ground floor hosts areas designated more for family fun than functionality. A retro-themed game room, Brunswick two-lane bowling alley, fitness room filled with exercise equipment, indoor heated saltwater pool, massage and steam rooms and a sauna are located here. Rooms commonly used for entertaining are found on the second floor. These include the formal living and dining rooms, a grand salon, a gentlemen’s lounge, chef’s kitchen, cozy family room and more. The master suite features a lounge area plus his and her master baths and walk-in closets. The third floor also includes two ensuite bedrooms. Three ensuite bedrooms, a craft room and sitting room comprise the floor plan on the fourth floor. Exceptional finishes and handcrafted accents incorporated throughout the interior, truly elevate this masterfully designed and meticulously decorated residence from livable to enviable. “This is one of Florida’s most significant homes to be built within the last century,” said Ed Gunning of Smith & Associates Real Estate. “Every detail was chosen to accommodate the most cordial and comfortable lifestyle.” Imperial blue granite countertops and backsplash make a bold statement in the chef’s kitchen. Gracie hand painted silk wallpaper highlights the formal dining room. Distinctive flooring choices include pillow edge limestone, and marble and French oak hardwood. While the estate exudes Old World charm, modern technology maintains everything with ease, from interior light settings and pool temperatures to window shade adjustments and security.

Additional structures within the estate’s footprint include a pool pavilion with kitchen, enclosed maintenance/ machine workshop, measuring 10,967 square feet and a collectors car garage large enough for 20-plus cars, as well as, office spaces and a conference room. This versatile venue could easily be converted to event space for hosting large group functions. Thanks to the Central Florida location that allows for outdoor activities year-round, it is easy to enjoy the waterfront any time. Lake Thonotosassa frontage alone exceeds 1,000 feet, making it ideal for launching watercraft from the double-decker boat dock located along the water’s edge. A horse stable and grazing pasture are just steps away from the main house, and a private jogging path and racetrack suitable for go-carts add to the outdoor options. If relaxation and restoration are personal priorities, the private massage room, outdoor, or indoor, heated saltwater pools and the steam and sauna facilities are always available. “This is an ideal place for someone whose lifestyle includes a passion for health and wellness, and who enjoys the natural beauty of the setting and all of the recreational activities that are available,” said Dina Sierra Smith of Smith & Associates.

From St. Petersburg to Sarasota, to Miami and East to Orlando and Lake Wales, METRO has found a few classic Florida attractions that would be ideal to pack up the kids and explore for a day or weekend trip this summer. Whether it’s the botanical gardens at Sunken Gardens and Bok Tower, a Killer Whale and dolphin show at the Miami Seaquarium, alligator showdown at Gatorland, or more than 200 animals at Sarasota Jungle Gardens, or a mermaid show at Weeki Wachee, it’s time to slow down, relax and enjoy these simple, low-tech Florida attractions.

Metro’s Retro Guide to Old Florida

Gatorland Sunken Gardens As one of the last of Florida’s roadside attractions, Sunken Gardens is a botanical paradise in the middle of a bustling neighborhood in Old Northeast St. Petersburg. The beginnings of the garden began when George Turner, Sr. bought six acres and drained a lake on the property and began planting tropical plants, hence the name “sunken garden” in 1903. With more than 50,000 plants and flowers, they are said to be some of the oldest in the region. The famous flamingos were brought back in 2016 with a new young flock of 20, joining the two remaining flamingos from 1956 and are always a fun sight to see. The gardens are a perfect spot to reflect, meander and stroll this beautiful treasure in the heart of St. Petersburg. Sunken Gardens 1825 4th St. N. Combine Old Florida charm with exciting experiences, exhibits and entertainment at Gatorland — The Alligator Capital of the World® in Orlando. Opened in 1949, Gatorland is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year with plenty of fun. Of course there are alligators and crocodiles, but so much more with its breeding marsh with observation tower, free-flight aviary, nature walk, petting zoo, trail ride, Gator Gully Splash Park and one-of-a-kind animal shows, to make it fun for the entire family. For a little more adventure try the Screamin’ Gator Zip line and new Stompin’ Gator Off-Road Adventure. Founded by the late Owen Goodwin, the attraction began as a roadside gift shop in a stockade-style building with a sawdust covered dirt floor, with the goal to give early visitors a look at the amazing reptiles.

Home to a variety of marine animals, the Miami Seaquarium founded in 1955, is one of the oldest oceanariums in the U.S. Located near downtown Miami, visitors will see the stingray touch pool, flamingos, penguins and various fish, sharks, sea turtles, birds, reptiles, manatees and more. During the 1960s, the tv show Flipper and two movies staring Flipper were filmed at the Seaquarium. Today, enjoy up close experiences by swimming with dolphins or seals, or become a trainer for a day. It’s the only place where Lolita the Killer Whale performs with Pacific white-sided dolphins for daily shows. For extra fun, try out the newest ropes course adventure, Sharky’s Sky Trail with its 18 challenges on bridges, suspended ropes and other balancing obstacles.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

Bok Tower Gardens

It’s a place where mermaids have come to life since 1948. Located north of Tampa in Hernando County, the classic attraction of Weeki Wachee park includes water rides, animal shows, mermaid shows and manatee watching. The name “Weeki Wachee” was named by the Seminole Indians and means “little spring” or “winding river.” Former U.S. Navy man, Newton Perry created an underwater theatre and taught the beautiful sirens of the sea to swim with air hoses and perform aquatic ballets. Due to renovations, the wildlife shows may still be closed, so check online. The Riverboat cruise, Buccaneer Bay and the Mermaid show are open and fun for the entire family. The park is operated by Florida Park Service and reaches capacity early in the day, so plan to arrive when the park opens, especially on weekends. Buccaneer Bay is a waterpark that is fed by the spring with a year-round temperature of 74-degrees and offers up waterslides and a lazy river. Fun for the entire family.

Step back into peace and tranquility at the beautiful 250-acre Bok Tower Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark. Dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1929, Bok Tower was created by former editor, author, and philanthropist, Edward William Bok in his winter home of Lake Wales, Florida. The Singing Tower is the focal point and sits on the highest point revealing a beautiful Reflection Pool. Built from marble and coquina, the Singing Tower is an architectural treasure with carved sculptures, custom iron-work, carvings and mosaic tiles, while the sounds from the 60 carillon bells are heard throughout the magnificent gardens. The gardens were designed by distinguished landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, using native and exotic plants. Kids can enjoy the Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden created specifically for them. Be sure to explore the Pinewood Estate nearby.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens Established in 1939 by newspaper man David Breed Lindsay and nursery owner Pearson Conrad, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is still family owned and operated today by Dorothy Tinney and her family, after her father Arthur C. Allyn purchased the gardens in 1971. The mission remains the same: to create an interactive experience between animals and nature in a relaxed environment. On the 10 lush acres, more than 200 animals call Sarasota Jungle Gardens home, including birds of prey: parrots, macaws, ducks, swans, snakes, small mammals, alligators, crocodiles, lizards and of course, the pink flamingos. One of the best things to do is to enjoy hand feeding the free-roaming flamingos. The daily reptile and bird shows that began in the early 70s are both educational and entertaining. Caribe Hilton Exterior and Pool View

San Juan Puerto Rico: Recovered and Ready for Summer Travelers The Historic Caribe Hilton Welcomes Guests | By Ronda M. Parag

I

t’s been nearly two years post-hurricane, and on a recent visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Caribe Hilton, I found the island of Puerto Rico welcoming and ready for exploration. For Tampa Bay residents, a direct flight on JetBlue or Southwest Airlines makes getting to San Juan so easy from Tampa International Airport. Once the plane takes off, it is less than three hours to touch down with Caribbean fun waiting. The Caribe Hilton has been a staple on the island, which opened in 1949, and is celebrating its 70th birthday. Following the closure from the hurricane, the hotel underwent a $150 million resto-

ration, including new contemporary guest rooms, reimagined restaurants and bars, fitness center, spa, collaboration with Puerto Rican Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig tennis center, landscaping, new indoor and outdoor event space and more. “The reopening of Caribe Hilton is one more symbol that Puerto Rico is back in business,” said Pablo Torres, General Manager, Caribe Hilton. “The sun is shining, there’s energy and rhythm on the island, and once again our famous piña coladas are flowing. We’re welcoming our return guests back home, as well as introducing new ones to the

enduring Caribe Hilton experience and legacy.” For a taste of the island, dine at the property’s Mojoto’s Caribbean Fusion, offering a selection of Puerto Rican favorites including fresh seafood, mofongo and a shareable paella. Make sure to order the legendary Piña Colada, as history was made at Caribe Hilton in 1954 when Ramon “Monchito” Marrero created the first ever frozen cocktail by combining rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice. The Epicurean Hotel

A Staycation Escape in South Tampa The Epicurean Hotel | By Ronda M. Parag

S

ometimes you don’t have to go far to feel like you are a million miles away. The Epicurean Hotel is truly designed to refresh and relax the mind, body and soul. Upon entering the lobby for check-in, guests are offered a glass of wine. Now, that is a friendly welcome! The boutique hotel is a Mainsail Lodging & Development project, in collaboration with the legendary Bern’s Steak House and operates as an Autograph Collection® of Marriott International, Inc. Located in the heart of Tampa’s SoHo District with plenty of restaurants, bars and nightlife, a stay at the Epicurean Hotel puts guests in the center of activity. Whether you stay on property or venture not too far, there are plenty of good eats and cocktails. The Epicurean Hotel is foodie centric

with its interior design and amenities. The sleek, modern design of the lobby welcomes guests with concrete floors, wine crates, hemp chandeliers and colorful artwork décor. For guests wanting a culinary experience, dine at Élevage or in the casual Lobby Bar. The menu offers up delicious seasonal selections of meats, pastas and my favorite, the Homage to Bern’s — a pressed steak sandwich, which pays homage to the legendary Bern’s Steak House across the street. Élevage also serves up a delicious brunch menu including Shrimp & Grits, Corned Beef & Potato Hash and Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict. After dinner or for a great happy hour, head to the roof top bar EDGE, for hand-crafted cocktails and tapas plates. If you’re looking for a special bottle of wine, check out Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits retail shop in the lobby.

With a fitness center and Spa Evangeline, both are ready to keep you on your fitness routine or indulge you with a soothing massage or body treatment. Relax poolside or hop aboard an Epicurean Cruiser Bike to ride the scenic Bayshore Boulevard linking South Tampa and downtown. Choose an overnight stay at the hotel, when there is a culinary class in the Epicurean Theatre. Simply head upstairs for sweet dreams, after experiencing a ticketed culinary demo or cooking experience. The 137 guest rooms and suites are comfortable and chic, offering complimentary wifi, flat screen TV, luxurious bath products and single-brewing coffee machines. Escape from the hustle and bustle of daily living with an indulgent stay at the Epicurean Hotel, there is certainly plenty to savor. M

METROGuide Foodie

Inspired Italian Dining Meet Ava Executive Chef John Lister By Ronda M. Parag

F

or delicious, home-cooked Italian dishes and wood-fired pizzas, SoHo’s Ava continues to satisfy the palate for both savory and sweet dishes. Leading the kitchen at Ava’s is executive chef John Lister. Born and raised in Tampa, Lister moved to Charleston, South Carolina, after graduating from Plant High School, to attend Johnson Wales University. “I stayed for over 20 years, working and running numerous restaurants in the Lowcountry area,” said Lister. He’s back in Tampa and heating up the kitchen at Ava with his culinary talents. “Our newest menu item is rabbit Ragu with Potato Gnocchi,” said Lister. The meatballs are popular, along with the crispy pork belly for starters. Great for sharing are the cheese and house-cured meats served with grilled bread, pickled vegetables and accompaniments. The pizza oven continues to shine creating delicious pies including the simply delicious Margherita – tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and olive oil or my favorite – Funghi with cremini and shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onion, mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano and balsamic. The pastas are made in-house with a variety of noodles including fusilli, pappardelle and a house favorite –

Bucatini Alla Vaccinara – oxtail, pine nuts and currants. To accommodate guest demands, the menu has a selection of vegan dishes. “Vegan cooking is challenging because I am not a vegan, but I still want to create tasty food and not just put a bunch of vegetables on a plate,” said Lister. “I want a composed plate that’s attractive, tasty and nourishing.” Lister says that he really enjoys cooking and eating slow cooked foods,

whether it’s a long braise Ragu or even a gumbo. His love of food and cooking is reflected in the dishes on Ava’s menu. Recently added on the dessert menu is the panna cotta - a vanilla thickened sweet cream served with fresh seasonal berries and white chocolate chip cookie crumble. Lister admits to a sweet tooth. “I love desserts and I love to think about what I would enjoy, and then have the fun of creating it,” said Lister. Sounds like a sweet way to end a delicious meal. M
