Publisher’s Notes Refresh and Renew.

Springtime is the time to review and reflect on what is ahead. While we don’t really have seasons here in Tampa – it is either warm, hot or hotter, it is time to refresh the wardrobe with spring fashions. We had a great time at the studio of Brian James with the latest fashion finds from area boutiques, to create the feature Style Is In Full Bloom. In METROPeople, meet Founder of Soulgani, Christina Majeed, who followed her passion and dreams to create an activewear brand made in the USA, while giving back to various charities associated with the design inspiration. Her company motto: Do Good. Be Good. The time is now to check out the rooftop bars in the Tampa Bay area. From the new M.Bird at Armature Works to several rooftop perches on South Howard Ave., including Bulla Gastrobar’s Luna Lounge and Epicurean’s EDGE, we’ve found a few hot spots to grab a craft cocktail or tasty bite to eat. Let us know your favorite rooftop bar. It’s time to think about an escape with summer just around the corner. The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino on the “One Happy Island” offers great accommodations, dining and service on the white, sandy Palm Beach in Aruba. From pop-up dining, a tranquil spa and Aruba’s largest casino, there is plenty of fun and relaxation ahead. For whiskey lovers, check out the new Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar, with a choice of over 350 bottles behind the bar. Perhaps, I’ll even see you there. There are some worthy fundraisers for some great causes coming up, and they are all about the kids. We’ll see you at the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Fashion Funds the Cure in a new location this year, at Raymond James Stadium in May, and the Children’s Dream Fund’s Rays on the Runway in July. Hope to see you out and about! Enjoy,

Master Printer and Painter Theo Wujcik Exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Inspired by two pieces in its permanent collection, the Museum of Fine Arts worked with Wujcik’s widow and keeper of his estate, Susan Johnson, to bring personal touches to the Theo Wujcik: Cantos exhibition. A prominent fixture in the Ybor City art and music scene in the 1990s, and professor at the University of South Florida, the exhibition includes ten-large scale paintings by Wujcik (1936-2014). Wujcik spent a decade creating the paintings and drawings inspired by Dante’s Inferno from 1987- 1997. The exhibition showcases Wujcik’s literal and symbolic interpretation of the captivating journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet, Virgil. “We are honored to present this focused exhibition celebrating an important aspect of Theo Wujcik’s powerful portfolio,” said Kristen A. Shepard, Executive Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. “We hope this exhibition will introduce his work to new audiences who will learn about and appreciate his impact on the arts in this region and beyond.” Wujcik was a quiet visionary by day and dancing punk rocker by night, in Tampa’s Ybor City. He spent over 40 years in Tampa as an artist, collaborator, teacher, mentor and influencer. Wujcik studied lithography in Los Angeles and New Mexico, before working as a Master Printer at USF’s Graphic Studio.

Theo Wujcik (American, 1936–2014) Gates of Hell, 1987 Acrylic and collage on canvas, Gift of Susan Johnson in honor of Katherine Pill

Wujcik was inspired by the daily activities in Ybor City, including the multi-layered flyers and posters throughout the neighborhood. He loved to experiment with dimensional textures and layering, by using newspapers and paper towels in his works. Many of his pieces show a chain link fence motif, inspired by the industrial landscape throughout Ybor City. Several special ticketed events surrounding the exhibit are planned. Friday, May 17, 7-10 p.m.— “Theo’s Inferno” Dance Party Fundraiser by the MFA’s support group, The Contemporaries. Guests will enjoy punk and new wave music by DJ Gabe Echazabal and special Ybor City inspired food and decor. Tickets $30 - $60 per person. Thursday, May 23, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. —

Theo Wujcik, American (1936–2014) Canto II, 1997 Polymer emulsion and charcoal on canvas, Gift of Bonita L. Cobb in memory of Nikki C. Cobb

A special book reading & discussion by local author and musical talent, Paul Wilborn, with his new book, Cigar City: Tales from a 1980s Creative Ghetto. Free with admission.

The Theo Wujcik: Cantos exhibition will be on display at the Museum of Fine Arts through June 2, 2019. For more information call 727.896.2667 or visit www.mfastpete.org.

Meet Christina Majeed, Founder of Soulgani By Ronda M. Parag She is passionate and bubbling with excitement, always finding inspiration and taking photos everywhere she goes. Most days you will find Christina Majeed wearing the yoga wear she has created, and not the business suits of a former life. While on vacation with a girlfriend in Peru, Christina Majeed, 36, was inspired to create her business Soulgani — an apparel company specializing in activewear. Soulgani means abundance of soul. It was on that hike that Majeed photographed a rock, and her business

was born. In the tech field, Majeed was feeling the stress of her job and turned to yoga as a way to relax and re-center herself. “It was like ying and yang,” said Christina Majeed. “I was on the best trip of my life and hiking, which I had never done, and saw this gorgeous rock, and thought that image needs to be on a pair of yoga pants.” On that mountain top in Peru, the concept of Soulgani was born, and officially launched in March 2018. Constantly creating and expanding, Majeed has developed her third collection of

Finding Her Center – A Brand With Soul

activewear made with recycled plastic bottles, that will be in production soon. Majeed believes in giving back to the places that inspire her, so a portion of each sale is given to a particular charity associated with the design inspiration. The Strength collection, which features the Peruvian Rock print, gives back to The Fuller Center for Housing – Global Builders Peru to help build homes in small, mountain villages. Other charities include the NYC Food Bank and Feeding Tampa Bay. Majeed collaborated with St. Petersburg resident and retired NASA astronaut, Nicole Stott to create the Universe Collection with images taken from space. A portion of that collection’s sales goes to the Space for Art Foundation, which brings art to children in hospitals. To date, sales from Soulgani have donated over 6,000 meals, 100 art supplies and 750 bricks for homes to the various charitable causes. It was important to Majeed to have the apparel made in the USA. After much research and testing, she found a factory in Detroit that is highly responsive and delivers on the quality she demands. Her family often jokes that she is either wearing leggings or cocktail attire. “You gotta wear your own product,” laughed Majeed. Upcoming designs include prints from California and Bali and trips from New York and South Carolina. Engaged to Grant Sparks, Christina is planning a November wedding, as well as, running her company. Plans for a honeymoon in Hawaii, and a bachelorette party in the Bahamas, are sure to spark inspirations and future designs for her yoga wear.

Tampa Museum of Art Showcases Abstract Expressionism with Two Exhibits Helen Frankenthaler (American, 1928-2011), February’s Turn, 1979. Oil on canvas. 48 1/8 x 108 1/4 inches. The Haskell Collection. © 2018 Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Inc. / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

The current exhibitions at Tampa Museum of Art, Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution, showcases 25 works from the Haskell Collection that acts as a unifying direction in PostWorld War II art and Echoing Forms: American Abstractions from the Permanent Collection, offers pieces from the museums permanent collection. Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue sponsored in part by Dr. and Mrs. Robert G. Isbell and is curated by Museum Executive Director, Dr. Michael Tomor. “The works featured in Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution, offer a window onto the evolution of process and abstraction in the second half of the 20th century,” said Dr.

Michael Tomor. “The exhibition presents a group of artists who, together and independently of one another, influenced a freedom of personal expression in art that continues to this day. Although they did not share a similar style or set of artistic values, these artists learned from one another and encouraged one another to seek out their own truth and visual vocabulary.” The exhibition is generously presented by Maureen and Doug Cohn. The exhibitions will be on display through mid-August 2019 at The Tampa Museum of Art. Visit www.tampamuseum.org for more information.

Modern Architectural Jewel For Dramatic Living By Ronda M. Parag

T

he pie-shape piece of the property originally helped to dictate the design of the mid-century modern home, created by the firm of Holmes Hepner & Associates Architects. According to project designer Debbie Hepner, the property has a very unusual geometry. “The front is the narrowest and the back opens up completely to the water,” said Hepner. The house is designed with the master suite on one side of the home and the children’s space on the other side.

The open living spaces flow effortlessly from indoors to outdoors through the use of large aluminum and glass windows, on the front and back of the home. Ideal for entertaining, the home provides space for large comfortable gatherings, and small spaces for intimate evenings with friends and family. Large overhangs provide protection from the elements and are lined with stunning wood-planked cedar, that continues throughout the home, from front to back. The architectural planking is brought inside over the foyer, dining and kitchen areas. The travertine wall is another striking architectural element used to unify the home. From the element on the curbside mailbox to the entry wall, and inside the main living space and back of the house, the use of the travertine material ties the home together and provides continuity. “We did it to imply that the wall had always been there and we built the house around it, said Hepner.

A massive dark walnut wall serves both form and function by dividing the dining room from the kitchen, and serves to absorb some of the sound created by the use of stone on the floors and walls. The sleek and modern kitchen will delight any chef. The spacious design overlooks the beautiful pool and offers plenty of countertop cook space and abundant storage. The visually floating staircase leads to a stunning library bridge, that offers stunning views of the canal front. Allowing for plenty of privacy, the master bedroom is on one side and the other bedrooms on the opposite side. Glass windows surround the master suite, allowing for plenty of natural sunlight to spill inside. The master bath is calming and serene with its frosted glass, white quartz countertops and dark cabinets.

Outside, the unusual shaped swimming pool looks like an electric guitar shape and is surrounded by travertine coping and decking, bringing the inside materials out. Great care and design are taken with the landscaping. The landscape does not compete with the home, but enhances its beauty. “We did all native beach plants between the pool and seawall, said landscape architect Jonathan Toner. Island Adventure Awaits with Tropical Breezes and Desert Beauty in Aruba Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino | By Ronda M. Parag

A

ruba is known as “One Happy Island” and on a recent trip to experience all that Aruba has to offer, I can happily agree that Aruba has plenty of activities and beauty for travelers to discover. While Aruba has sparkling blue waters and offers plenty of diving, snorkeling and water activities, the northeastern coast of the island shows off its dry arid climate and plenty of desert-like landscape dotted with cactus. A great place to stay is the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, located on the beautiful white sands of Palm Beach with the friendly and welcoming staff. Ideal for adults and families, the resort offers 414 newly refreshed rooms and 24 suites, along with both family and all-adult H2Oasis pools, 10 bars and restaurants, a spa and casino. The Tradewinds Club offers a boutique experience for adults with reserved beach area, concierge services and lounge area, offering five meals and drink services throughout the day. Between the pristine beach, the relaxing pools, 24 hour casino

fun, and numerous dining options, there is no need to leave the property. The main pool offers a swim-up bar serving tasty tropical cocktails. Dine under the stars, and in the sand, at Atardi, as it’s the ideal place to catch the sunset and dine on delicious seafood. Get into the spirit of Carnival at La Vista (a buffet serving breakfast, lunch and dinner), every Thursday evening, with a Caribbean Carnival show complete with lively music and costumed dancers. We discovered the island with an off-road jeep tour by De Palm Tours. The all-terrain vehicles took us up the hills and rocky landscape to breathtaking views of the sea. We saw the flora and fauna of the area, along with goats atop the hills that seemed quite at home in the arid landscape. We stopped at a couple of the picturesque beaches, the lagoon that now showcases the Son of a Bridge, after the collapse of the Natural Bridge, The Chapel of Our Lady of Alto Vista, Aruba’s first chapel and the California Lighthouse. On the water, a half-day snorkeling trip with Red Sail

Aruba allowed us to see plenty of fish, a shipwrecked boat and even sea turtles. To experience the transformation of the San Nicolas area, I recommend the mural tour with ARTISA’s (Art is Aruba) Founder Tito Bolivar, who has created the Aruba Art Fair and proudly navigates the 40+ murals created by international muralists. There are plenty of events and festivals that attract tourists to the island including Carnival, Soul Beach Music Festival, Sea Jazz Festival, Summer Festival, Aruba Art Fair, Aruba Fashion week, and the perfect place to call home during a stay on the island, the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. Keeping It Local in Tampa Bay Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar | By Ronda M. Parag

f you like whiskey, bourbons and craft cocktails, then check out the recently opened neighborhood, farm-to-fork restaurant at International Plaza. While attending the VIP Grand Opening, we got to sample the food and sip the cocktails. We liked what we tried, and have since returned to try additional food and drink menu items. The Tampa Whiskey Cake location is the 7th for the chain of restaurants based in Dallas, Texas. “For people seeking bold and unique flavors, Whiskey Cake is their neighborhood tavern committed to doing it the right way, delivering locally sourced ingredients and perfectly crafted cocktails, through our farm-to-fork and garden-to-glass way of life,” said Steve Shlemon, CEO of Whiskey Cake Holdings. Like other Whiskey Cake locations, the Tampa restaurant has an on-site herb garden and the chefs and bartenders partner with local vendors to source

local and farm fresh ingredients. The bar uses only hand-squeezed juices, and house-made bitters and syrups. With more than 350 whiskey brands available behind the bar, the whiskey connoisseur will find the ideal drink. We enjoyed the Smoke & Lightning made with Old Forester Bourbon, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and wood smoke and garnished with bacon. “We pride ourselves in knowing our farmers and partners by name and serving chef-driven inspirations hand-prepared each day - no freezers, no microwaves,” said Shlemon. “Every single thing coming out of our kitchen is created from scratch using simple, honest flavors brought to your table by experienced servers.” Great starters include delicious deviled eggs (always adding a twist), fried green tomatoes and beef jerky. The menu offers a great selection of sandwiches including the OMG 2.0 Burger — topped with onions,

mushrooms and goodness, or the 3 Little Pigs — slow roasted pulled pork sliders, with whiskey BBQ, apple slaw and crispy onion strings. For salad lovers, try the Shrimp & Grain or the delicious Beet & Goat Cheese. Do not leave without trying the, not to be missed, decadent namesake dessert — Whiskey Cake, a toffee torte, bourbon anglaise, spiced pecans, and topped with a house made vanilla whipped cream. The private dining room is large enough to hold 46 guests, while there is seating available inside or at the outside patio, overlooking the activity on Bay Street. Supporting the local community, during the grand opening, Whiskey Cake donated 50 percent of sales (up to $10,000) to Metropolitan Ministries. M Located on Bay Street at International Plaza 2223 N.
