Publisher’s Notes Home Is Where the Heart Is. It has never been more evident with the recent Safer at Home and orders to social distance, that we feel safe and secure inside our homes. When we originally planned to launch a new publication, METRO Home + Design, we had no idea that our lives would be turned upside down by a world-wide pandemic. While we have all had to adjust our lives to new realities, it did give many of us the opportunity to pause and reconnect with our families. In this issue, with everyone staying home, it gave everyone the opportunity to take in their surroundings and see what needs to change or be adjusted. In Home Tour, designer Enrique Crespo transforms a vacation home with bright, bold colors and textures. In At Home, we chat with homeowner Cheryl Adams and how she found the perfect home built by Modern Home Capital that has allowed her family to be relaxed and together during this time of quarantine. Photo by Andi Diamond Photography In Pop of Personality, we had the opportunity to chat with Baisden Gallery co-owner, Susan Baisden, about collecting and making an impact with original art. “It’s as simple as buying what you like,” said Susan. Original art does not have to be expensive or intimidating. Stop by the gallery in south Tampa to view works of more than 20 artists showcased. It is certainly a challenging time, but we can’t allow ourselves to panic and live in fear. We must remain strong in spirit, mind and body. We need to inspire positivity, and be the good for those around us, as well as ourselves. We hope in the future to expand our coverage of home and design topics. If you have ideas and inspirations that you would like to share, please connect with us. We would love to hear from you.

et amongst mature landscape and a sparkling pool, the Wadsworth family (Eric, Traci, Brenton and Tess) created an outdoor oasis. “The concept for the BARn began almost two years ago,” says Traci Wadsworth. “After several renditions and a few life hiccups, we finally had a design. It was just a simple structure that we could enjoy, build and decorate with worry free materials, that will look even better when used, like a good leather purse.”

8

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Shortly after the final decision to proceed with the BARn, COVID-19 hit and the family was quarantined at home. “Unfortunate circumstances brought the four of us together, and allowed us to put on our hard hats and became craftsmen in our own right,” says Traci. There are a couple important design pieces that have meaning to the family including a painting by their daughter, Tess, an old light used by shrimp boats that was purchased in Mount Dora, Eric’s first fishing pole, Blackhawks and Lighting memorabilia, along with a Corona neon light. “As the BARn brought us together to build, it has also brought us together almost daily to be outside by the pool for drinks, dinners, or just family talks,” says Traci. “It has already given us memories that we will cherish and a time we won’t soon forget.” M

scaping the craziness of day-today life was the inspiration for Bee Studios to create a Master Suite retreat for a family with four young children. The design and build coordination was handled by Brooke Eversoll, CMKBD of Bee Studios, Inc. “My inspiration for the whole design began with this most amazing water jet marble in blues and whites, which I envisioned as a custom “rug” in the center of the bathroom,” said Eversoll. “I wanted to evoke a light airy space to let the marble sing. I balanced the rug with neutral walls and floor tiles, and added a pop of

blue in handmade artisan tiles. My design concept was to create his and her furniture vanities, a freestanding tub, an open concept shower, and a private commode area.” Once the original design was approved, the demolition of the space began and as luck would have it, there was an unforeseen obstacle – a structural issue that added additional expense and time to the project, but allowed Eversoll to re-think the design and suggest improvements that the client excitedly agreed to. The changes allowed for a flip of the closet and the bathroom to capture larger windows for the bathroom

HOME TOUR Bold Patterns, Colors and Textures For A Vacation Retreat By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Nicholas Ferris

he desire to add color to a home with a clean, transitional, modern interior is what the owners of this Boca Grande home wanted when they sought out interior designer Enrique Crespo, Principal of Crespo Design Group. Although the owners live out of the country, it wasn’t difficult to present, design and complete the project. Now more than ever, we realize that although that personal connection is essential, there are ways to work remotely, and virtually, to get the job done. The design process started in Fall 2019 and the bright, bold and colorful Boca Grande vacation retreat was recently completed. “It was easy to make virtual presentations and we would mail samples of finishes and suggested fabrics,” said Crespo. “It is not difficult to work with a designer virtually.” Throughout the three-story, single family home, Crespo Design Group sought to add splashes of color and whimsy through the furnishings, window treatments, beddings, lighting fixtures and rugs. The main living space is on the 2nd level with stunning waterfront views. “The previous living area was congested and I wanted to open it up,” said Crespo. “It needed a statement piece and I found the perfect semi-circular sofa by French luxury furniture company, Roche Bobois™. The neutral gray fabric is accented with colorful designer pillows, a custom waterscape rug and a circular wood and ceramic topped coffee table. The rooms are accented with colorful Missoni window treatments. The dining table offers seating for 10 with a walnut, two pedestal offset cube and rectangle stacked base. The rectangular box-shaped chandelier above the table was sourced in Italy.

One of the most striking pieces above the stairwell is a vintage 1960s Murano glass chandelier made in Italy. The chandelier has been re-wired to meet current electrical codes. Leading to the third floor, the stairwell has been covered with a Missoni stair runner to bring in the blue, pink and orange hues throughout the home. The iconic motif of Missoni adds harmony with the chevron pattern and vibrant color tones. Most of the artwork existed in the home, including the bamboo art installation. “We created pops of color, as you move through the home from room to room,” said Crespo. “Wallpaper has made a come back,” said Crespo. “With the home on the water, we used the grass cloth in the bedrooms to add a layer of texture that you wouldn’t be able to achieve otherwise.” The bedrooms are relaxing and cozy, yet contemporary and perfect for a restful nights sleep. The bone inlay geometric, black & white night stand in one of the guest rooms combines both style and function. The bamboo and cane headboard compliment the nightstand and the contrasting stone base of the lamp. “The use of grasscloth on all the angled walls adds that tropical feel,” said Crespo. The color palette of creams, blacks and grays pop with splashes of orange in the plump pillows.

The hand wall sconces above a bench in the first floor foyer add a touch of whimsy and certainly a great conversation piece. “They are so fun,” said Crespo. “I presented some different suggestions and these clients liked the ideas and were able to think outside the box.” One of the unique pieces in the foyer is the floor lamp designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. “The statement piece console came from London and the teal inserts are vellum,” said Crespo. “We created the custom area rug to complete the space with splashes of pinks, teals, creams and grays.”

On the first floor, the bar and lounge area offer comfortable seating to relax on the sectional covered with blue hues drawn from the palette of the nearby pool and water views. Belly up to the bar to sip a cocktail from the modern, brass bar stools. The glass topped coffee table base is reminiscent of ocean waves. Through the use of color, fabrics and furniture, the design reflects the tropical location and maximizes the waterfront views and the owners could not be happier with their vacation retreat. M

AT HOME Finding Calm In A Modern Traditional Design By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Tony Sica

heryl Adams was walking by the single-story home under construction and decided that it would be perfect for their large family. Their current home was just too small, having sold their previous waterfront home in Culbreath Isles. This home was spacious and large enough for their family to spread out, with every room serving a purpose. Built and designed as a spec home by Steve Rogai, President of Modern Capital Development Group, the timing could not have been better, as Cheryl was able to select all the finishes including flooring, lighting, tile, countertops and fixtures. With the help of designers Allan Domagas and Effie Griffith, who Cheryl has sought their design talents for over 20 years, Cheryl created a home that is both a combination of modern and traditional design. “It was effortless,” said Cheryl. “Steve has great taste and with the help of Allan and Effie, the process was stress free.” The screened lanai is one of her favorite features of the home. Across the back of the home, the lanai can be accessed through pocket doors that slide completely out of the way, creating space large enough for both living and dining areas. “It’s where we spend most of the time,” said Cheryl. “We couldn’t pick a better quarantine home.” Along with husband, Harvey and their two daughters, Cheryl’s son and his fiancé from New York are currently staying at the home. “Everyone has their own space,” adds Cheryl. The main color scheme of the home are shades of gray and black that lend to a contemporary feel with the furnishings of comfy sofas, graphic floor coverings and sleek lighting fixtures. Cheryl describes the design style as Modern, French Farmhouse. “The home is perfect for entertaining,” said Cheryl. “Our home is where we gather as a family.”

Cheryl also opened up their home for the LAMPLighter’s annual Silver Coffee. The charity event raises funds for the children of Metropolitan Ministry and Joshua House. It was one of the most successful events for the charity, and Cheryl and Harvey’s home was filled with guests, that explored every room in the home. The open floorplan easily accommodated all the guests. One of the biggest draws of the 5,000 square foot home for Harvey and Cheryl was that it was a single story home, which is rare in south Tampa. Most developers want to maximize the lot and go up with multiple stories. “We definitely use every room and there is no wasted space,” adds Cheryl. “We were in Canada during most of the completion of the home. I came back once or twice, but otherwise we did Facetime. It was easy and there were no mistakes. It was better than I would have dreamed,” said Cheryl. “Steve is so particular and communicated great with my design team and his team. His word is good.” “I enjoyed the entire process with Harvey and Cheryl,” said Steve Rogai, Luxury Builder/Developer. “I don’t build just a home, I strive to build a relationship. I cared, as much as they did, about building their home.” Regardless of the home budget, it is important to develop a trust with your builder. “It is all about the process and trust,” said Rogai. “It’s the relationship, the human factor, that makes all the difference in the end.”

32

“It is a give and take process,” said Rogai. “Each party has to respect and trust that the other will do the right thing.” Building a custom home can take a year or so. “It’s like a mini-marriage,” said Rogai. “Everyone needs to be comfortable working together. It is not “if” something goes wrong, it’s “when,” and how the issue is handled is what sets us apart from the competition. I always strive to make things right. I can’t stand for a client leaving dissatisfied.” One of the highlights of building the Adams’ home for Rogai was the experience. “We were able to work with the design team through the completion and staging,” said Rogai. “With custom clients, we were able to take the luxury designs and finishes to meticulous detail and finish to their liking.” “Steve builds an amazing home with attention to detail,” said Cheryl. “It’s personal to him. I’ll still call with something, and he takes care of it so quickly.” “I believe what sets Modern Capital apart is my direct involvement, and our internal management teams,” said Rogai. “From accounting to the field, we have all the pieces in place to create that custom dream home. I consider every home we build as part of my legacy that will still be standing, long after I’m gone.” Cheryl is thrilled with her new home, but says with a laugh, “I would definitely be up for building another home with Steve and Modern Capital. Never say never.” M

Last year, Baisden gallery installed a permanent installation of 54 Audrey Phillips paintings in the new Southard Family Building at the University of Tampa. Baisden has also formed a collaboration with The Current Hotel. As part of the Autograph Marriott Collection, The Current Hotel created a dedicated gallery space to feature local artists. The first featured artist is contemporary artist Alberto Murillo. “We are ecstatic to partner with the
