IV Vitamin Therapy in Tampa

Looking and feeling your best is IN THE BAG!

Dr. Lisa Koche Spectra Wellness Solutions

PATIENT TESTIMONIAL I began getting Meyers IVs when training for endurance races (Ironman 70.3 triathlons and marathons). I was in my late 60s and found a profound boost in energy and stamina. I distinctly remember running a 5-mile training run before the Marine Corps Marathon and be struck by an awareness that I was not even particularly tired! I no longer do competitive races of long distances but still get periodic IVs to ward off, well, just about anything. Today, I got one because I am going to Europe for a few weeks and want to be sure the trip is not marred by illness. Count me as a believer! —Paul T.

Replenish, revive, refuel, restore and revitalize … From the inside out. IV Vitamin Therapy is a fast, safe and easy way to get the fluids, vitamins and minerals your body is thirsting for, by delivering vital nutrients and hydration directly into your bloodstream. For many vitamins and nutrients, IV Therapy is the ONLY delivery method that guarantees

100% bio-availability and adsorption, because unlike oral vitamins, IV Vitamin Therapy bypasses the stomach and GI tract. Treatments can be used to aid with specific health conditions, to boost energy and immunity, or to help with athletic training and recovery.

Spectra Wellness Solutions offers a variety of IV cocktails. Our revitalizing menu covers every type of IV drip you may need, from anti-aging beauty blends to immune system boosting, antiviral cocktails, to athletic recovery/optimization IV drips and more.

FITNESS Finding A Personal Trainer That Works For You. By Mary Lou Janson

H

iring a personal trainer to help you achieve whatever your fitness goals may be could require some homework, and may take a little legwork. But the steps taken may save time and money, and help you to maximize results and reduce the risk of injury. Who trained the trainer? Checking certifications, credentials and levels of experience may be the best way to start your search. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) sets quality standards for professional certification programs “to help ensure the health, welfare and safety of the public.” You want a trainer who is knowledgable, capable, competent and will do no harm. Among the popular sources for fitness certifications are American Council on Exercise (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT), National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA), and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

What is your goal? People hire personal trainers for many reasons as well as for many purposes. Whether you are focused on losing weight, training for a specific athletic event, such as your first marathon, you need someone able to motivate and challenge you, while you build up your body. Or if you are really in a rut, and desperately need to be freed of your regular workout routine, the right trainer can help. But you need to identify and clarify your goals upfront, in order to find someone who has the right skill set, and mindset, to help you succeed.

“Regardless of your fitness goals, a personal trainer should motivate and challenge you, while you build up your body.”

H+W 16

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Make it personal. Set up a face-to-face meeting, observe the trainer working with another client, or see if you can coordinate a try out session before committing to a series of training sessions. Get to know the person to determine if this is someone you want to spend time with, can work with, and can have confidence will get the job done. You are not looking for a new best friend, but a fitness professional who will bring creative ideas to you, take time to understand your strengths and limitations, and can correct your form or push you to complete one more set, without making you feel uncomfortable or pressured. The two of you will be spending quality time together, in close quarters, so make sure you can be at ease with one another, and can freely communicate. Patience please. Expect results over time, not overnight. Short term success is fine — and certainly satisfying — but setting long term goals, and giving your body time to transition from where it was, to where it is going is for the best. This isn’t a competition, or a race, but a new way to gain control of your body’s physical fitness, and keep building on those improvements. Engage a personal trainer for consistent training times that encompass a few months, not just a handful of hours or a couple of weeks. Take time to develop new habits and achieve noticeable results. Other factors to keep in mind: • Do their rates fit your budget? If you want to work with a trainer for an hour, twice weekly over a four-month period, that can really add up. But the results you gain in terms of having a stronger, healthier body, feeling more energetic and being able to be more active may far outweigh the costs. • You found the perfect person, but they only have 5 a.m. Mondays and 7 p.m. Thursdays open on their client calendar. A great trainer may be in high demand. You can ask them to refer you to another colleague. Meanwhile clients come and go, so you could also keep checking back in hopes more convenient times open up, that will accommodate your schedule. • Where you train may impact who you train with. Trainers offer a variety of ways, and places, to work out. Maybe you are a member of a gym, where they are allowed to conduct personal training sessions. Or you have an in-home gym that offers you the utmost convenience, and privacy, but the trainer you like best lives too far away to make it feasible for them to commute. Some trainers are more mobile than others so if you like the idea of meeting them at some other site, such as a park or the beach, they should provide equipment for you to use. Weights, resistance bands and jump ropes are examples of what trainers can easily transport. M

Top T ips to Get Ready to Run

You’ve made the decision to get in shape, and whether your goal is a full marathon or simply a few laps around the neighborhood, there are a few steps to consider taking before you strap on those shoes and head toward the finish line. Here are a few tips to help get you ready for the big race: Seek Quality Sneakers – Feet come in a variety of widths and sizes, so visit a specialty running store to find perfect-fitting sneakers. These may come with a hefty price tag, but there are no shortcuts for comfort and support while running long distances. Make a Schedule – Try to aim for at least 10 hours of training per week, including three days where you run, and two or three days of other physical activity such as cycling or strength training. To avoid exhaustion, be sure to include at least 1-2 “rest” days per week. Stick with Water – Avoid sports drinks that are loaded with preservatives and sugars. You can’t go wrong with the hydrating power of water. As a rule, try to consume

SPONSORED CONTENT

at least 6-8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you run. Proper hydration after the run is also vital. Go Online – Many websites have training guides for various skill levels or different types of races. If you have a smartphone, look for apps that can take you through day-by-day workouts to get you marathon-ready. Nutrition – Filling your body with the proper amount of fuel can help ensure finish-line success. Load up on quality carbohydrates, such as beans, peas, whole-wheat pastas, whole-grain cereals, apples, brown rice and root vegetables. Protein also plays an important role in a runner’s nutrition, so fill up on lean meats, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, peanut butter and soy protein sources, as well. By following these general rules, you’ll be able to focus on achieving your goal and enjoy the thrill of finishing the race. Find more tips for a healthier lifestyle, visit www.eLivingToday.com.

WELLNESS Pom Pom Pow! A Cheerful Way To Workout. By Mary Lou Janson

ake your next workout a whole lot more fun by picking up some cheerleading pom poms to perform a lively routine combining easy to follow choreography with upper body movements. Pom Pom Pow! is a new form of aerobic exercise that features not-too-fancy footwork with arm-toning activities, for an overall workout. Originated in Tampa by a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL cheerleader, classes last for one-hour and newcomers can try their first class for free. In addition to sending heart rates up and keeping muscles moving, this exercise is also a more “cheer-ful” way to work out, according to its founder. “You can’t dance and not smile,” said Lizette Guerra, creator of Pom Pom Pow! “It’s really a happy workout.” Created by the Tampa native, who is also a former dance teacher, group exercise instructor and currently a personal trainer, the energizing, dance-inspired exercise combines uptempo music with a variety of side-to-side stepping, stationary movements and low impact legwork that can consume up to 300 to 500 calories per class. Each class can easily conform to all ability levels. For example, no dance experience is needed, every fitness level — from beginner to more experienced — is welcome and movements can be adapted for all. No jumps or leaps for you? No problem! “This is a workout designed to provide you with less pain, but more gain,” she added. With nearly 30 years in the fitness industry to her credit, Guerra knows that not everyone wants to workout, but we all want to have a good time.

“You can’t dance and not smile,” said Lizette Guerra, creator of Pom Pom Pow!” It’s really a happy workout.”

Comfortable clothing that doesn’t limit or restrict movement is recommended. Shoes made for aerobic activity are also beneficial. Pom poms are provided for all classes. Guerra currently offers classes in a variety of local venues, from dance studios to fitness centers. She is also building a roster of Pom Pom Pow! trained instructors that will enable her to offer more classes in more locations. M

“I encourage everyone to just keep moving and have fun,” she said. Students are also free to do their own freestyle dances, if they don’t want to follow the routines. “This is a creative class that you can enjoy without killing yourself.” Currently, Guerra has a repertoire of about 30 different routines that she leads students through. Top 40 songs to salsa music create the soundtracks used to accompany the classes. Those who have already tried Pom Pom Pow! have benefitted not only by having fun and getting fit, but also by boosting their self-confidence. They leave class feeling good about how they look and about themselves. “I think that comes from me always reminding them that they are beautiful, just as they are and to embrace their bodies,” Guerra added.

PRP — Our Blood’s Magic Elixir

Dr. Jennifer Hayes, DO, FACOOG Visionary Centre For Women 2695 Ulmerton Road Clearwater, FL 33762 727.540.0414 www.VisionaryCenterForWomen.com

Dr. Jennifer Hayes understands the importance of sensitivity, not only in how she treats her patients, but in the ways her practice helps her patients to literally feel more and live better. Her Clearwater-based Tampa Bay Cosmetic Gynecology practice, Visionary Centre for Women, cares for a wide range of medical issues, including those dealing with sensitive issues such as decreased bladder control and diminished sexual satisfaction. A licensed, board-certified gynecologist and gynecologic surgeon who ranks among the best cosmetic vaginal surgeons in the U.S., Dr. Hayes also offers non-surgical treatments that can be administered in her office, provide fast results and produce lasting benefits. According to Dr. Hayes, the most exciting aspect of healthcare today is Regenerative Medicine, the expanding field of techniques that can stimulate the growth of new cells in our body, and encourage existing cells to be more energized and youthful. Through these sexual medical breakthroughs, our nerves are regaining and retaining their youthful sensitivity and functions. The most promising breakthrough for reinvigorating those sensations today is through PRP (aka Platelet Rich Plasma).

SPONSORED CONTENT

PRP is a magic elixir found in our own blood. It is obtained with a simple blood draw, filtered immediately and injected back into the vaginal and clitoral areas. This procedure is known as the O-shot. After the blood is drawn, the skin is numbed at the vaginal entrance with a powerful, yet gentle, numbing cream. Once numb, the fresh PRP is injected in a 30-second procedure. No downtime, no hormones, no pain. Over the following four to six weeks, nerves begin to respond, resulting in increased sensation, ease of orgasm and heightened orgasmic intensity. Bladder nerves also benefit when PRP is used to treat incontinence. Boasting 30 different growth factors, PRP has become a progressive and safe treatment for tough-to-treat skin conditions affecting the vulva, like lichen sclerosus. These helpful effects can last up to a year. The science is exciting and on the horizon to help issues never before addressed for women is groundbreaking. Nerves naturally start to decline with age. This is a unique and wonderful way for our own bodies to help us, help ourselves. Instead of ignoring sensitive issues, let Dr. Hayes help you achieve the sensations you naturally enjoyed, and can now enjoy again.

BEAUTY Cosmetic Trends For 2020 It’s All About Staying Youthful And Feeling Good. By Ronda M. Parag

I

t seems that cosmetic procedures for the face and body are becoming more and more mainstream. There is no taboo anymore and people everywhere are doing their best to stay youthful and feel good. From non-surgical procedures of lasers and fillers to face-lifts and breast augmentations, there are numerous options of where and what to have done. We had a chance to talk with three local doctors, and their medical offices, to discuss the top trending treatments. Regardless of where you choose to have any service performed, during the consultation the provider should answer all your questions and make you feel confident and safe. You should never feel pressured. Remember, it is your face and body, and your decision. Do the research and decide the best treatment plan for you.

Academic Alliance in Dermatology Who knows skin better than dermatologists? At Academic Alliance, they have an entire Aesthetics Dermatology team that are ready to provide services including Botox® and Dysport®, Dermal Fillers, Sculptra®, Kybella® and Laser treatments. A major trend in the treatment of many skin conditions are lasers. “In addition to helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, lasers can help in the treatment of port wine stains and other medical conditions of the skin,” said Laura Sokolewicz, Vice President of Marketing & Aesthetics. The Halo laser treatment helps to renew skin, reduce wrinkles, scars, and improves skin texture. Other laser treatments can assist with rosacea and hyperpigmentation to improve the texture and quality of the skin. Fuller lips are a big cosmetic trend among women in their early 20s. The use of dermal fillers create plump and

full pouts. “Botox is still the leading treatment for fine lines and wrinkles,” said Sokolewicz. “It’s easy and inexpensive, not painful and no downtime. It’s easy to get it done on a lunch hour or on a Saturday at Academic Alliance. Botox or Dysport, provide rather fast gratification. There is no stigma anymore.” When it comes to any types of anti-aging procedures, Sokolewicz says that prevention is everything. “Start maintenance as early as possible,” said Sokolewicz. “Of course, it helps to have good genetics, eat healthy foods, including lots of fruits and vegetables, and take good care of the skin. Sunscreen is a must!” “The truth is, we have changed the meaning of aging gracefully,” said Sokolewicz. “It’s all about self-esteem and talking care of yourself.” She recommends having any procedures done, by experienced providers, in a medically, safe environment. In addition, Dr. Castellano has a full medical spa offering a variety of services including injectables, state-of-the-art laser treatments, Botox® and skin care. “Botox is most commonly used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles,” said Dr. Castellano. “It can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and headaches.” A non-surgical popular, trending procedure includes Novathreads (PDO) procedure. “A lot can be done,” said Castellano. “Novathreads can be used for the face and body. A current popular procedure is the pony tail lift, giving a cat eye look.” “Mommy Makeovers are becoming increasingly popular,” said Castellano. “It’s not just vanity. It is women wanting to look and feel their best at any age — we see women in their 20s and also women in their 70s who come in looking to improve their appearance. We want to be a part of that process.” “While there are non-surgical options including lasers and injectables, sometimes there is no choice for a patient than to consider surgery for the optimum results,” said Castellano. “For a saggy neck — the only option may be surgery. It all depends on how aggressive the patient wants to be.” A combination procedure of microneedling + Platelet Rich Fibrin and eMatrix is one of the most popular and effective non-surgical treatments among older and younger patients. This treatment revitalizes and renews the skin naturally. “We want to enhance looks, rather than alter them,” said Dr. Castellano. “It’s about looking and feeling your best at any age.”

Is the graphic of an ear, not what you were expecting from an article on dentistry? Maybe it should be! Do you truly love your smile? If the answer is no, or not really, then what are you waiting for? A whiter, brighter, healthier looking smile is truly the gateway to a happier, more confident you. Choosing the dentist to get you there is an important decision. It is paramount to remember that the results hinge hugely on the communication between yourself and your provider. We customize our treatment to cater to each patient’s individual goals. For some patients small steps can be taken that can be as simple as whitening their teeth, as with Zoom In-Office Laser Teeth Whitening. For others, with misshapen or decayed teeth it can be most complicated and involved. We strive to culture an environment for our patients, where the expectations are met and exceeded. Much is involved in the creation and redefining of a person’s smile. We work hand in hand with master dental lab technicians to create a smile that looks vibrant and natural. We take the time to educate our patients in regards to each step of the process. Our patients are

treated with state-of-the-art dental technology. “Cosmetic,” comes from the Greek word (kosmetike) meaning “technique of dress and ornament like.” Cosmetic in dentistry is utilized to describe superficial changes and appearance of the teeth and your subsequent smile. Cosmetic is easily confused with “Aesthetics,” in dental work. However, aesthetics is used to describe the emotional value you place on a cosmetic change. This is best facilitated with your desires being heard. We are always humbled, when a new patient entrusts our team with their dental health and any goals — cosmetic or otherwise. When making a choice on a clinician it is important to do your research, meet the team and the person who will be providing your care. Take the time whether it is our office, or any other, to include this step as part of the process. Becoming your own advocate will lead to a more confident you, in many aspects of care. Most of the referrals we receive in our practice for cosmetic dental services come from patients, that became friends in the process, whose lives were impacted from the procedures done. So remember, listen and ask questions!

ENERGY Healthy Options For Nutritious Eating. By Mary Lou Janson

now you need to do a better job of managing what you eat, but restricted by too little time and conflicted by too many temptations to stick to making good food choices? Hectic schedules, dietary limitations and weight loss battles can all figure in to day-to-day decisions about what to eat. Life gets crazy and leads to too many meals purchased at drive-throughs or too-frequent pizza deliveries. Shopping for fresh ingredients and finding new ways to make meatless dishes more satisfying can be challenging. Focusing on high protein foods, like those featured in the keto diet, and avoiding carbohydrates when all around you are enjoying big bowls of pasta and fresh baked bread can be tough at times. One way to avoid these potential pitfalls? A meal delivery plan that offers conventional menus, keto-friendly selections and plant-based options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eat Right Lifestyle Delivery Meal Plans make it easy, and convenient, to enjoy freshly made foods cooked up at a 13,000-square-foot, HACCP-certified kitchen in Tampa. That certification ensures everything prepared on-site meets requirements for food safety to protect public health. Of course, what’s good food these days without a famous face having a hand in its brand? Hell’s Kitchen contestant Robert Hesse, who cooked for Chef Gordon Ramsay seasons 5 and 6, collaborates with Head Chef Anthony Santos to create Eat Right’s menu items. Customization is key to the plans customers may select from: conventional meals, ketogenic collations or meat-free,

plant-based alternatives. Lots of options allow individuals to choose from the number of days each week they will participate, either five or seven. How many meals they want to receive each day, ranging from one to three. And even add options like double protein, note any allergies that need to be factored into the food prep ingredients that clients just don’t like, and don’t want, to find in their food. Not only can clients feel good about having those personally designed meal plans delivered twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays, they can also have the added satisfaction of knowing each purchase provides a free meal

T ips to Improve Wellness and Prevent Stroke

Strokes don’t discriminate, according to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke. They can happen to anyone, at any age. About 1 in 4 people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime. However, up to 80 percent of first strokes may be prevented. “Healthy habits can protect and improve brain function and lower your stroke risk,” said Dr. Lee Schwamm, MD, American Stroke Association volunteer chairman and executive vice chairman, department of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. The American Stroke Association offers these five tips to help reduce your risk of stroke and maintain mental sharpness as you age: Keep blood pressure in mind and under control. High blood pressure is the No. 1 controllable risk factor for stroke. Work with your doctor to manage your blood pressure and get it into a healthy range (under 120 over 80). Eat colorful fruits and veggies. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can lower blood pressure over time, which may help reduce your stroke risk. Some fruits and vegetables, such as mangos, avocados and blueberries, are especially rich in vitamins and minerals that improve brain function and heart health. Rest up. Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night can improve brain function, both today and long-term. A soothing bedtime routine and avoiding screen time before bed can increase the quality of

sleep you’re able to get. Sleep-related breathing issues may also increase stroke risk, so seek treatment right away if you suspect sleep apnea or similar problems. Meditate. Emerging science shows practicing mindfulness and being aware of your breathing may reduce blood pressure. A quick way to be mindful anytime is to pause, notice your breath and observe details in your surroundings. Take a hike. Getting active activates brain cells, encouraging them to grow and connect more efficiently. Aerobic exercise, like going for a walk, also gives your arteries a workout and makes your brain more resilient to reductions in blood flow that can cause strokes. To maximize health benefits, the American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (or a combination) and two days per week of moderate — to high-intensity muscle strengthening activity. “These simple suggestions are great for everyone to follow, even if you don’t think you’re likely to have a stroke,” Schwamm said. “While many adults don’t think they are at risk for stroke or reduced brain function, the reality is that nearly half of all adults in America have high blood pressure, and untreated high blood pressure is one of the most common causes of stroke and also causes up to 60 percent of dementia.”

Boost Your Heart Smarts Debunking the Top 10 Myths about Cardiovascular Disease

February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to remind the Tampa Bay community to focus on heart health. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of both men and women and claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. Despite its prevalence, there can be a lot of mystery surrounding heart disease. And relying on false assumptions can be dangerous to your heart. Let’s set the record straight on some common myths: Myth #1: “I’m too young to worry about heart disease.” As early as childhood and adolescence, plaque can start accumulating in the arteries and later lead to clogged arteries. Even young and middle-aged people can develop heart problems — especially now that obesity, type 2 diabetes and other risk factors are becoming more common at a younger age. Myth #2: “I’d know if I had high blood pressure because there would be warning signs.” High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because you don’t usually know you have it. The way to know if you have high blood pressure is to check your numbers with a simple blood pressure test. Early treatment of high

H+W 38

www.TampaBayMetro.com

blood pressure is critical because, if left untreated, it can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and other serious health problems. Myth #3: “I’ll know when I’m having a heart attack because I’ll have chest pain.” Not necessarily. Although it’s common to have chest pain or discomfort, a heart attack may cause subtle symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, feeling lightheaded, and pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck or back. Too often these symptoms are ignored or dismissed. Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, call 911. Myth #4: “Diabetes won’t threaten my heart as long as I take my medication.” Treating diabetes can help reduce your risk for or delay the development of cardiovascular diseases. But even when blood sugar levels are under control, you’re still at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. That’s because the risk factors that contribute to diabetes onset also make you more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. Myth #5: “Heart disease runs in my family, so there’s nothing I can do to prevent it.” Although people with a family history of heart disease

American Heart Association | Special Section

are at higher risk, you can take steps to dramatically reduce your risk. Create an action plan to keep your heart healthy by tackling these to-dos: get active; control cholesterol; eat better; manage blood pressure; maintain a healthy weight; control blood sugar; and stop smoking. Myth #6: “I don’t need to have my cholesterol checked until I’m middle-aged.” The American Heart Association recommends you start getting your cholesterol checked every 5 years starting at age 20. It’s a good idea to start having a cholesterol test even earlier if your family has a history of heart disease. You can help yourself by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Myth #7: “Heart failure means the heart stops beating.” The heart suddenly stops beating during cardiac arrest, not heart failure. With heart failure, the heart keeps working, but it doesn’t pump blood as well as it should. It can cause shortness of breath, swelling in the feet and ankles or persistent coughing and wheezing. Both types of heart events warrant immediate medical attention. Myth #8: “This pain in my legs must be a sign of aging. I’m sure it has nothing to do with my heart.” Leg pain felt in the muscles could be a sign of a

condition called peripheral artery disease, which results from blocked arteries in the legs caused by plaque buildup. The risk for heart attack or stroke increases for people with PAD so this recurring issue should be discussed with your doctor immediately. Myth #9: “My heart is beating really fast. I must be having a heart attack.” Some variation in your heart rate is normal. Most of the time, a change in your heartbeat is nothing to worry about but sometimes, it can be a sign of arrhythmia, an abnormal or irregular heartbeat. Most arrhythmias are harmless, but some can last long enough to impact how well the heart works. Always discuss with your doctor. Myth #10: “I should avoid exercise after having a heart attack.” As soon as possible, get moving with a doctorapproved plan. Research shows that heart attack survivors who are regularly physically active and make other heart-healthy changes live longer than those who don’t. The American Heart Association recommends at least 2.5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity each week for overall cardiovascular health.

The Health Of Our Nation’s Youth Is In Jeopardy. The U.S. surgeon general has raised an alarm regarding the rise in e-cigarette use among the nation’s youth, saying it has increased “at a rate of epidemic proportions.” The latest data show that more than 1 in 4 high school students are using e-cigarettes (compared to approximately 1 in 10 just two years ago). In recent years, significant strides have been taken to improve health in our youth when it comes to clean indoor air, healthy eating and drinking guidelines, and anti-tobacco campaigns. In fact, the number of adolescents and teens who smoke cigarettes had reached a historic low. However, with the recent surge of vaping and e-cigarettes use, tobacco companies are once again spending millions targeting youth and addicting a new generation to nicotine, reversing the decades long progress that has been made in reducing youth tobacco use. Why has vaping become so rampant in a population that had historically said no to cigarettes? Many adolescents believe that e-cigarettes are safe and do not contain nicotine. However, one e-cigarette refill pod can contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes and kids are sometimes vaping 2-4 pods a day. In addition to the dangers of nicotine — a neurotoxin shown to impact cognition and emotional control in growing brains — studies have found chemicals and toxins in some e-cigarettes

H+W 40

www.TampaBayMetro.com

include formaldehyde and metals like nickel and lead. Some of the chemicals have been shown to harm lung tissue, heart muscle cells, the lining cells of blood vessels, and the cells we need for blood clotting after injury. In November 2019, the American Heart Association launched their fight against Big Vape with the #QuitLying campaign. The campaign is a three-pronged initiative involving research, policy advocacy and youth activation intended to urgently address the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use. The $20 million investment in the “End the Lies Youth Vaping and Nicotine Research Initiative,” which will focus on studying the impact of youth vaping and nicotine use. To build off this bold, nationwide, studentfocused initiative, the American Heart Association, students, and schools coast-to-coast are demanding accountability by the e-cigarette industry for its lies to youth about vaping and nicotine addiction. Despite the fact that national legislation has been passed raising the age of sale for tobacco products to 21, there is still much to be done as we continue to combat this mounting epidemic. What can you do to help? Advocate for strong, comprehensive tobacco policies; talk with the young people in your life about the dangers of smoking and vaping; and join the American Heart Association’s fight at www.QuitLying.org.

ACADEMIC ALLIANCE IN DERMATOLOGY (AAD) Panos Vasiloudes, MD, PhD, FAAD, FAAP, FASMS Specialties: Dermatology for the whole family and every age in Tampa and Orlando. Triple board certified, Panos Vasiloudes, MD, PhD, is a clinician, researcher, scientist and teacher, locally and internationally. “I want to use the knowledge in genetics, science and bedside, accumulated over 40 years to prevent, diagnose and cure diseases in dermatology and beyond” said Dr. Vasiloudes. Today, Dr. Vasiloudes will explain how skin findings and birthmarks or acquired skin-marks, can give clues as to the health of the whole body. What specific birthmarks and bodymarks are a red flag to search for an internal disease? Dr. Vasiloude’s top birthmarks acting as a red flag are: 1. White spots, on the skins surface can indicate conditions of the endocrine system, including thyroid disease, anemia, adrenal

disease and several other autoimmune diseases including lupus like entities. 2. Brown spots, known as café au-lait macules, are indicators of higher risk for melanomas and multiple other internal cancers affecting different organs. 3. Red patches, or port wine like stains, may be associated with cardiac disease, especially cardiac arrhythmia (heart racing), that can only be demonstrated under stress conditions. 4. Face bumps, are not always acne or rosacea. They can represent fibrous papules, or wart like conditions, can indicate higher risk for certain cancers of the gastrointestinal tract or the breast. During the last year, Dr. Vasiloudes has presented the AAD’s pioneering observations

and research to local conferences, like at the Hillsborough County Pediatric Society, Saint Joseph’s Hospital Pediatric Grand Rounds, USF Department of Dermatology Grand Rounds, International Congress of Dermatology, Milano and at the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance conference in Chicago. Under his leadership, AAD, established in 1988, is now in its fourth decade of providing breakthrough dermatologic care for patients of all ages in 20 locations, five counties in West Central Florida, from Saint Petersburg, Tampa to Orlando. Academic Alliance in Dermatology believes in caring for the whole family, integrating education, experience, and instinct delivered with a personal touch.
