A scholarship is merit-based and is awarded for academic, athletic and/or special performance achievements and DOES NOT have to be repaid.

...a grant?

A grant is awarded by the state or federal government and is usually based on financial need and DOES NOT have to be repaid

...a loan?

A loan is money that you borrow and MUST be repaid with interest. Student loans can come from the federal government, from private entities such as a bank or from other financial institutions. If you need to borrow money to pay for college, start with federal loans. Private student loans are generally more expensive.
