What you should know ... More than 500 MILLION non-recyclable plastic straws get used in the Western Hemisphere everyday.

8.3 BILLION straws are found on shorelines every year.

BIODEGRADABLILITY AND MARINE DEGRADABILITY

Our paper straws use natural cellulose paper as the primary material of the paper drinking straw. Paper, being a natural fiber, is universally considered to be inherently biodegradable and is supported as such by organizations such as the San Francisco Food Service Ware Ordinance. Being made of paper, naturally degrade in oceans, rivers and lakes and are safe for marine life. All plastic straws, including biodegradable and compostable plastic straws, pose a serious threat to the marine environment as their fragments do not degrade and remain in the ocean, able to be ingested by marine organisms. Our durable straws reduce plastic pollution by breaking down quickly in most environments. FOOD SAFE - FDA/EU COMPLIANT Our straws have been tested and approved to be in compliance with FDA test method 21 CFR 176.170. Testing was also conducted to obtain evidence of compliance with Council of Europe Resolution AP(2002)1 relating to paper materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Our samples comply with The General Requirement (Article 3) in EU Regulation No. 1935/2004 as referenced in Report Number EFSH13080415-ST. Inks used for printing on the surface of our drinking straws have been tested, certified and are guaranteed acceptable for direct contact with food products, in accordance with the applicable chapters and sections of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR). In addition, a safety assessment has been conducted, and based on the toxicity testing results; the conclusion provides added evidence that all chemical components used are proven to be safe as tested by the Health, Environmental, & Regulatory Services of Intertek USA, Inc. Additionally, all raw material and process components used are free of any fluorochemicals/fluorinated compounds. SUSTAINABILITY The vast majority of material used in the composition of these products is in compliance to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This paperbased material comes from a sustainably managed forest with chain-of-custody procedures in place. COMPOSTABILITY Sample product was submitted to an independent source for substrate review. The evaluation was successful in verifying the product meets the untreated paper substrate requirement for its acceptance in commercial composting processes and is verified to be fluorine free.

Why PLA and Bioplastics are not helping our environment. 4 Facts you should know. “Paper straws remain the best option for food service and venues because they are an environmentally safe, single-use option, but as we all know, not all paper straws are made equally.”

#1: PLA straws require specific disposal conditions.

PLA straws require industrial composting conditions, meaning consumers or businesses must have access to a commercial compost facility, which are only available in certain parts of the U.S. and rare in Central America and the Caribbean. In order for PLA straws to compost, they require temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 consecutive days and need to be properly routed to specialized industrial composting or recycling facilities to break down.

#2: PLA straws can act the same as traditional plastic straws.

Many studies show that PLA straws are almost impossible to decompose in a landfill and cannot be composted at home. Disposing any type of PLA, bioplastic or “plant-based” plastic straw is no different than throwing away a regular plastic straw. Not only are PLA straws impossible to decompose in a landfill, like traditional plastic straws, they are especially dangerous if they end up in our waterways and ocean making them just as likely to be consumed by marine wildlife and fish, ultimately endangering or killing them.

#3: Consumers don’t know the difference.

The issue with PLA straws is that people think they are using an environmentally-friendly product, which is true, if disposed of correctly. The reality is that they are not. People don’t know where to dispose of it and question whether it goes in a general recycling bin, the trash or a plastics recycling bin. The answer? None of the above. PLA straws must be sorted and put into their own industrial composting collection bin – an option rarely found. PLA disposal becomes an even bigger issue when it is used outside of individual households and in foodservice settings.

#4: PLA straws are cumbersome to operators.

While PLA straws are “compostable,” it cannot be mixed with other types of plastics because PLA causes problems at recycling centers and they cannot be recycled with other curbside recycling. Restaurants and businesses using PLA straws must sort their PLA products separately from other recyclables to have them commercially composted. They must also arrange a pickup or drop off at a commercial composter and pay to recycle PLA straws. On top of having to clean and turn tables quickly, this means that restaurant operators must further separate tabletop garbage and recyclable items.
