About Aardvark®

Aardvark paper straws were introduced in 2007 in response to a growing anti-plastic movement. Parent company Hoffmaster Group, Inc.®, created an environmentally friendly straw based off the original paper straw invented in 1888 by Marvin Stone. Today, Aardvark offers printed straws and bendable Eco-Flex® paper straws that are both earth and marine friendly, food safe, durable, customizable and made in the USA. Aardvark® Goes Green

Aardvark’s products provide a sustainable, alternative solution to plastic straw use. Made in the USA with about 30 percent more material than other paper straw brands, Aardvark’s durable straws help reduce plastic pollution by decomposing in just 45-60 days. All Aardvark products, being made of paper, are naturally degradable and will compost with no added chemicals or harmful dyes used in the manufacturing process. Aardvark is BPA-free, food safe, and FDA/EU compliant, CA Prop 65 compliant, PFOA and PF0S compliant.

Together with respected environmental organizations and eco-friendly brand ambassadors, Aardvark aims to educate businesses, restaurants and consumers about the benefits of using paper drinking straws instead of plastic straws. Aardvark® Compliance

MADE IN THE USA

100% of all raw materials, process components and materials that go into the making of paper straws are made in the United States. The labor to make, package and ship the paper straws is comprised of a 100% United States workforce. Aardvark® Paper Drinking Straws are fully compliant with FTC and California standards for “Made in the USA."

FOOD SAFE - FDA/EU COMPLIANT

Our straws have been tested and approved to be in compliance with FDA test method 21 CFR 176.170. Testing was also conducted to obtain evidence of compliance with Council of Europe Resolution AP(2002)1 relating to paper materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Our samples comply with The General Requirement (Article 3) in EU Regulation No. 1935/2004 as referenced in Report Number EFSH13080415-ST.

Inks used for printing on the surface of our drinking straws have been tested, certified and are guaranteed acceptable for direct contact with food products, in accordance with the applicable chapters and sections of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR).

In addition, a safety assessment has been conducted, and based on the toxicity testing results; the conclusion provides added evidence that all chemical components used are proven to be safe as tested by the Health, Environmental, & Regulatory Services of Intertek USA, Inc. Additionally, all raw material and process components used are free of any fluorochemicals/fluorinated compounds.

SUSTAINABILITY

The vast majority of material used in the composition of these products is in compliance to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This paperbased material comes from a sustainably managed forest with chain-of-custody procedures in place.

COMPOSTABILITY

Sample product was submitted to an independent source for substrate review. The evaluation was successful in verifying the product meets the untreated paper substrate requirement for its acceptance in commercial composting processes and is verified to be fluorine free.

BIODEGRADABLILITY AND MARINE DEGRADABILITY

Aardvark® uses natural cellulose paper as the primary material of the paper drinking straw. Paper, being a natural fiber, is universally considered to be inherently biodegradable and is supported as such by organizations such as the San Francisco Food Service Ware Ordinance. Aardvark® straws, being made of paper, naturally degrade in oceans, rivers and lakes and are safe for marine life. All plastic straws, including biodegradable and compostable plastic straws, pose a serious threat to the marine environment as their fragments do not degrade and remain in the ocean, able to be ingested by marine organisms. Aardvark’s durable straws reduce plastic pollution by breaking down quickly in most environments.

Testimonials

Ted’s Montana Grill has used innovative and sustainable “Made in the USA” paper straws from Aardvark® for more than 10 years. By using paper straws, the restaurant has been able to reduce plastic pollution over the last decade. Ted’s Montana Grill has also recently begun reducing compostable waste by offering straws “on demand” instead of automatically giving them to customers.

Cost can be a key factor and hesitation point for businesses and restaurants considering switching from plastic to paper straws. However, companies that offer straws “on demand” find that customers request fewer straws overall, diminishing the increased cost of switching to paper straws and reaping the marketing rewards of going green without a hit to the bottom line.

In 2015, Ted’s Montana Grill served 4,945,701 guests but only gave out 4 million straws, totaling a savings of $17,000 (or 96 cases). And the trend continues. In 2016, Ted’s served 4.2 million guests and gave out 3.5 million straws.

Ted’s support and advocacy for Aardvark® Paper Straws has even led to additional collaborations with sustainably minded people such as young entrepreneur Milo Cress and his “Be Straw Free” campaign.
