MESSAGE FROM THE CEO As the school year 2018/2019 ends, I once again have the honour of being at the place that I love and am so proud of. We take pride in being a school where every pupil can find and achieve success and in being a community where everyone in the Malvern College Egypt family strives to find the best in themselves and others. We have much to be proud of at Malvern College Egypt. We look forward to another year of serving our MCE community. Ever since I began working in schools, I was surprised at how quickly time seems to elapse. It is difficult to list all the achievements we have made this year, I hope you enjoy this Yearbook which is a showcase of many of these. The success of our pupils is built on partnership we have with our families. I am so grateful that we have such an amazing relationship with our families and we will continue to strive to be the school that our families can be proud to send their children to. I thank all MCE parents for their continued support of our work with their children, and I look forward to another year. Our focus is on our pupils’ academic success as well as their social and emotional well-being. I am thankful to our entire staff who work very hard to create a positive environment where everyone can achieve their best. A very special thanks to those who have worked relentlessly to get the College the elite status of being a IB World school as well as a BSME member, therefore adding value to the College. INTRODUCTION FROM HEADMASTER The 2018-19 academic year at MCE has been a year of reflection, growth, hard work, success and acknowledgement. Even before the pupils had their first day of school in September, our staff were busy reviewing and updating core aspects of the College as part of the development of a long-term MCE strategic development plan. It has therefore been wonderful to end the year on a high with 3 significant endorsements of everything we have achieved: · Becoming an IB World School, authorised to deliver the Diploma Programme (IBDP) from September 2019 · Becoming a member of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) · The Malvern College International Quality Assurance process feedback highlighting so many positive aspects of the College; most notably how the Malvern Qualities are becoming so well embedded in our everyday practice and in the pupils’ own attitudes and actions. All three of these have involved professionals from outside of MCE visiting the College to explore what we have in place, from observing lessons to meeting with parents, and how we have developed over our short history. They have all provided purposeful feedback that we will use to further refine our planning for the future but they also act as a reflection of what has been achieved. I would like to thank every single member of our College community for their involvement in all aspects of the College over the last 12 months. Along with our dedicated staff, the pupils themselves should feel proud of what they have accomplished this year and how their participation in the learning journey has led to the phenomenal successes seen across the entire College. Likewise, our passionate and supportive parents have contributed towards so many aspects of the year, from the incredible Friends of MCE commitment to the International Day to valuable discussions during Parent Teacher Conferences. With monthly community service events and even training towards an expedition in Morocco this summer, our pupils are being challenged to go well beyond the traditional curriculum and develop as well rounded individuals. At MCE, personal growth is just as important as academic development. The information and photos on the following pages are designed to showcase and celebrate some of these amazing events and activities. MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF EARLY YEARS Both the British Ambassador, Sir Geoffrey Adams and Mr Eamon Mullaley from Malvern College International recently commented upon the bright, exciting and welcoming atmosphere within the Early Years at MCE. They noticed how our children are happy, polite and purposefully engaged in learning through play. They commented on how our children clearly demonstrate the ‘Malvern Qualities’ in their interactions with each other and with our visitors. All of this is as a result of the dedicated team within Early Years, our Nannies, Co-Teachers and Teachers; each and every one working tirelessly to create a very special ethos and environment for our children and families. The acquiring and developing of the ‘Malvern Qualities’ is a team effort, which involves all of our parents, grandparents and wider family. Without your aspirations, support and daily interactions with your children, we wouldn’t be able to complete the important partnership of education, linking home and school so effectively. Your children have achieved so much this year, from appearing on stage in the College theatre looking wonderful and performing confidently for the Winter Concert, to participating in House Dress-up days, Book Week, Trips, Sports Days, International Day and class assemblies; culminating in the successful Summer Show. Their academic performance continues to strengthen across all areas of the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum, as does their care for each other and positive attitude to learning. The future is bright for our Early Years children as the College continues to grow and develop; we are working towards The Council of British International Schools’ (COBIS) Patrons’ Accreditation next year along with recently becoming a member of British Schools in the Middle East (BSME). Personally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff team across the College and our parents for helping us to have achieved so much over the past three years. Dragonflies What a wonderful start to school life it has been for Pre-Nursery M, the Dragonfly class. Over the year we have been on an exciting learning journey; discovering new things about ourselves, the community we live in and the wonderful world around us. We have learned that eating healthy and being active helps our body and mind grow big and strong; we have all grown at least 4cm this year and mastered many new skills. As a class we have learned to share the toys, play with gentle hands and use our lovely manners, but best of all, we have made many new friends to share this exciting adventure. Bumble bees Pre-Nursery A
It has been a wonderful year in the Bumble Bee class where we have enjoyed various events, such as the Winter Concert and International Day. We really had fun taking part and celebrating Mother’s Day was a particular highlight! The Sports Day was loved by all and every child was a winner. We have covered a variety of topics, such as learning about people who help us. As part of the healthy eating topic the Bumble Bees went to the kitchen and made fruit salad; this was a real treat! We enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing lovely moments together, whilst growing and learning at the same time. We wish you all the very best in Nursery! Teacher: Miss. Caterpillars
This year the children in Nursery M – Caterpillars Class moved through the year as a team, growing and learning and building relationships with one another. It has been a journey of enjoying new storybooks together, from traditional tales to “The Gruffalo” and developing the Malvern Qualities through stories including ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance.’ The children have treasured their time running, climbing, planting, digging and balancing in our outdoor playground. They have been following their interests and expressing themselves through show & tell, cooking, painting, colouring, role playing, building models, singing and dancing. They have enjoyed our Kidzania and Sitara trips along with many special event celebrations including World Book Day and the Teddy Bear Picnic with friends. This year has been nothing short of magical for the Fireflies. They are truly a unique bunch and apply all the things they learn to their daily life. What an adventure it has been, from practicing our letter sounds, writing our names and learning about healthy living to fun dress up days, amazing school trips and the very merriest Christmas! The Fireflies love to learn but most of all, they are kind, resilient and independent. They are not only good friends; they are a family. Butterflies
What an amazing year it has been for us and our fabulous Butterflies! We have all come a long way since the start of the school year, and our class has shown such progress and enthusiasm for learning. Our wonderful children have grown greatly this school year and myself, Ms. Dina and Ms. Cheryl are very proud of them. They have enjoyed our fun topics, events and outings this year and work so well together. There has been much fun and laughter, and we have incredibly fond memories of each of our children and of them as a class. We are very sad our Butterflies are going to leave us, although we’re happy and take comfort in knowing that they are definitely ready for Reception. Spiders
We have had a terrific year in the Spiders Class; learning about our world, animals and the people in our lives. The children have developed lots of important skills that help with their social, emotional and physical growth, and have enjoyed learning through play and exploration. They learnt all the RWI sounds and can write many of them as well as their own names. Spiders class have always been excited about fun Maths games and activities and have learnt to count and to recognise and order numbers. They have explored colour, shape and textures in our daily art activities and enjoyed dancing to our class songs. They loved the trip to Kidzania and Sitara theatre, where they had lots of fun. Miss Lina, Mrs Diana and I are all so proud to have taught and nurtured this wonderful group of children and have enjoyed watching them blossom and develop. WOW! It has been quite a year. The children have enjoyed a variety of topics; learning all about Egypt, healthy eating, animals, and habitats and traditional tales. The children have all actively engaged in their learning, expressing themselves in a variety of ways. As always there has been plenty of opportunities for dressing up, including Book Day, International Day and Egyptian Day. We enjoyed a trip to Family Park to consolidate our learning on different habitats. The children have all made great progress and I am proud of their achievements. What a year! We have seen so much progress from all the children in all aspects. New friendships have been forged, old friendships have blossomed and a positive attitude to school strengthened through opportunities allowing the children to express themselves individually and collectively. Buttercups
Reception V also known as Buttercups, have had a fantastic year! Over the year we have learnt about ourselves, how to eat and keep healthy. We have looked at various habitats and how things grow. Towards the end of the year we looked at traditional stories and enjoyed acting out the different tales. We have enjoyed the dress up days and loved participating in the day’s activities. During Sports Day we worked as a team within our allocated Houses developing all our skills and teamwork. RV enjoyed their day at the Family Park looking at the different habitats and the animals that live in them. It has been a pleasure teaching each and every one of the amazing children within Buttercups class and I wish them all the best as they embark on their next journey.

It has been a busy year in Reception E with lots of exciting topics that we have enjoyed investigating. We went on a great trip to the Family Park where we reinforced our learning of plants and animals. The Halloween Parade and Book Week activities were two of many opportunities to dress up and celebrate over the year. I have watched the children mature into confident, independent learners with a passion for learning. It has been wonderful to see them develop as individuals and achieve so much. 1M have had a wonderful year, full of learning and new friends. We had a fantastic trip to Fagnoon Farm, we enjoyed our annual Sitara Theatre visit and were busy with in-school events such as dress-up days, International Day and Sports Day. What a wonderful year we have had in 1A. The fun hasn’t stopped as we have travelled along our learning journey. We have had some amazing adventures along the way. We’ve travelled into space and joined Neil Armstrong as he landed on the moon and we walked every step of Levison Wood’s mammoth hike along the river Nile. We’ve explored ancient China and learned how to make Chinese dumplings and noodles. We have enjoyed making scientific predictions and carrying out experiments. We demonstrated our singing and dancing skills in the various school productions and our class assembly. The children have made giant leaps of understanding and have developed their skills, readying themselves for the challenges that await them in Year 2.

PRIMARY MESSAGE It is a great privilege to share with you this celebration of another fabulous year in the Primary School. The photographs alone cannot fully express the College’s full vision but it is clear that the pupils are proud to be MCE pupils with an understanding of our Guiding Statements and Mission. We can sometimes forget that this is only our third year, although Malvern College Egypt has been open for over 150 years. Every day, the pupils display and promote an increased awareness of our high expectations, both academically and socially, and an increased love of the College. In all our teachers’ work with the children, and you their parents, the College Guiding Statements underpin what we want to achieve. We are pleased to continue to develop our academic curriculum through our constant reflection and questioning. We are integrating an all-encompassing content that stretches the pupils, and motivates their passion for learning through enquiry, curiosity and collaborative learning. We have seen good results academically; our pupils are understanding that resilience is important and mistakes are evidence that they are learning. We firmly believe that this is achieved by every child feeling safe and supported thanks to the excellent pastoral support provided by our staff. The behaviour of our pupils, the standards of dress, and their respect, courtesy and politeness is often commented on by visitors and whilst we are on trips. This ideally reflects the level of pride and self-respect that we, as a College, aim to instill in our pupils. The joy observed from the children during House Charity trips and the development of deep-rooted values is fundamental to developing open-minded caring individuals, with an awareness of local community and global issues. The partnership that we foster between our pupils, our teachers, and parents is crucial to developing lifelong learners who embrace all opportunities. The photographs express and illustrate the holistic nature of the College and you will gain an understanding from them that education is not just taking place in the classrooms. It takes place on educational excursions, residential trips, Co-Curricular Activities, House events and Charity days and visits. The College will always aim to be the best school for its pupils both in Cairo and internationally. 2M have had a wonderful year! We started with our circus topic where children enjoyed showing their skills as performers. Children became fashion designers and wowed the Primary School with their recycled black bin bag designs and creations. Year 2 have had the opportunity to visit the theatre and take part in drama activities to explore stories. We particularly enjoyed our trip to Fagnoon Farm where we applied our Science learning about plants and habitats. Dress-up days and events have been fun – children have amazed us with their efforts. Amongst our topics this year we investigated the theme of upcycling, which led to Year 2 putting on a fabulous Fashion Show Assembly that we presented to the rest of the school. The feedback we received demonstrated the appreciation for all the hard work and creativity that had gone into the process of designing and making an outfit using a black bin bag and other recycled materials. Year 2 will soon become Year 3 and will face many further challenges but I am certain they will do this with confidence.

What a wonderful year we have had! 2L have been an amazing class to teach. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch them all develop throughout the year into pupils that Malvern College Egypt can be proud of. Exciting events such as creating our very own Fashion Show and going back in time to question Samuel Pepys about the Great Fire of London have given the children confidence and the ability to lead their learning. What a marvellous year it has been for the teachers and pupils in 3A! We have learned many things while we have all grown and matured. The children have worked incredibly hard this year and they have all made wonderful progress. Some of the highlights in our class have been our two trips; one to Sitara to learn about play scripts and one to the Pharaonic Village to learn even more about life in Ancient Egypt. The children also thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas class party, where we opened gifts and celebrated the end of our first term together. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to teach every member of 3A this year. I have loved watching them develop both socially and academically. I will miss them very much when they go to Year 4 but wish them luck and hope that they continue to work as hard as they have done this year. Well done, 3A!

Every new school year brings memories and friendships that will last forever. This year we took part in so many different experiences; a journey that created our memories of Year 4M. We have studied ancient kingdoms and heard about how battles were fought and lost. We won medals and became champions ourselves in Sports Day. The House swimming competition made us feel like athletes; with medals around our necks. We became superheroes for the day, dressed up as witches and nightmare ghouls to raise money for charity. We worked hard and learned to enjoy learning, each of us gaining confidence to achieve and believe in ourselves. This is what Year 4 has been about.

It has been a colourful and industrious year in 5M. An English unit on Greek Myths saw the children writing some amazing poetic versions of the Icarus story. This was accompanied by Greek urns crafted from papier-mâché, a Greek Day, creating mechanical books and a trip to a pottery centre. Our Rivers topic was characterised by equally high levels of creativity; the children made their own flick books on a world river and replicated Monet’s style in their own “Water Lilies” paintings. The children also had great fun meeting the animals at Al Sorat Farm. The week at WellSpring was a wonderful experience and inspired the children to create some highly persuasive adverts for the centre.

They were Abstract when sharing ideas and discussing thoughts in class, Adventurous when risking the zipline and high ropes as well as trying out new techniques in class and Active at our House Sports Day, Swimming Gala and Malvern Marathon events! MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SECONDARY Each year is special in the life of our College and for this reason the yearbook is invaluable. Its pages are filled with so many memories and images of happy and successful times spent in MCE. Once again it has been a year where our pupils participated in a myriad of activities. Dramatic, sport and musical performances continue to enhance the cultural life of our school. So much of today’s education debate tends to focus on preparing pupils to meet the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. Business leaders search for people whose skills and character match the demands of today’s global economy, including strong communication, teamwork, analytical, technological and organisational skills. They need young people who are self-motivated, creative and have a strong work ethic. We expect our pupils to develop these skills. Exam results are important of course, but any pupil who believes that exams are the most important thing are sadly mistaken, the need to develop as a whole person is far more important. We are not all going to be doctors or lawyers, but I know that every MCE pupil will find their place in the world and be a global citizen who challenges the wrong in our world and will make a positive contribution to our planet. I would like to share a quote from Michael Jordan and that I would like every pupil to read and reflect upon and remember this throughout their life. “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan We all make mistakes and we all fail at some point, but it is how we react after failure that is the most important thing. I do see pupils make mistakes, however what I am proud about is that they learn from them, self-reflect and move on. Well done to you all. I offer my sincere congratulations and thanks to both staff and pupils for their contribution to the success of the school. The College is still young, and we are excited about the progress we have made and the new journey we will embark upon next year. There is a growing sense of community within 7M, with shared values and each pupil looking out for each other. As they progress through the school, these friendships will mature, and the Malvern qualities will begin to become part of their natural development. Whilst there are some individuals that have contributed more to the form and their prospective Houses, all the pupils have shown themselves to be engaging, fine spirited and good representatives of the school.

In their first year in Secondary the pupils in 7L have really pushed their limits to show what they can achieve. This year we have welcomed pupils from Primary, new pupils and pupils who have returned after living abroad for two years. I have really enjoyed working with the pupils and they have shown hard work and enthusiasm in all areas of College life. A definite highlight was winning the Book Week door display competition in April. We enjoyed our prize of being able to come in to school in nonuniform. I look forward to working with these pupils next year.

What a busy year it has been for 8M! We welcomed six new pupils to our class, all six settled in brilliantly to life at MCE. 8M have enjoyed taking part in all the activities this year, from quizzes, to dress-up days, poetry readings and talent shows. And what a talented bunch of pupils they are! For example, Mohammed El Tayeb who won six gold medals in the Cairo winter swimming championships as well as the trophy for the best time in his age group AND the trophy for the best swimmer overall! Also worth mentioning are Iffah Ariffin, who won first prize in the talent show for writing and performing her song ‘Lost’ while accompanying herself on the ukulele; Jason Orme who took the lead role as ‘Bert’ in the school musical ‘Mary Poppins’ in his first term at MCE; Doga Harmanci who won first prize in the Secondary School’s creative writing competition; Nesrin Mansour who won first prize for the poetry competition and Selim Darwish who achieved a certificate for ‘Best public speaker’ in the Interhouse debate. WOW! I am so extremely proud of 8M! Sadly this is my last term at MCE, and it will be very hard to say goodbye to 8M as we have shared so much together these past two years. The most pleasing aspect has been the continuing flood of praise postcards for academic success, demonstrating Malvern qualities as well as for going the extra mile. During assemblies I am proud of the class for their smart uniforms and exemplary behaviour. With the recent exams the pupils used every available moment to revise. They will now move to year 9 and embark on the IGCSE courses. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing them all reach this milestone.

What a fast year! It only seems like a couple of months since I met all of 9M, many for the first time, and wished them good luck as they embarked on their school year and start of their IGCSE’s. It’s been a wonderful year with so many of the class excelling in many areas, both inside and outside of the classroom. Over the course of the year I have witnessed all of the pupils grow and mature and exhibit many of the Malevrn Qualities, such as Resilience, Independence and Risk-taking. Both male and female pupils have shown great development in sport and drama this year, that has allowed them to form strong friendships with fellow classmates and develop new ones outside of the form that I hope, will develop into lifelong friendships. There is a strong sense of community with 9L, with shared values and each pupil looking out for the others. There is a good balance of boys and girls within this group and it would seem the ties that they have formed, brought together under the Malvern “family”, will further develop in lifelong bonds and friendships. 10M have had a challenging but very rewarding year. All of the class have been involved in external IGCSE exams to some extent and have coped with the pressure well. 10M consistently topped the merit table and were rewarded for their efforts with pizza! They also had one of the best punctuality and attendance records for any class in secondary. They are a very diverse bunch of pupils, with wide ranging interests. As a class they participated in many activities: representing the school in swimming, basketball and football, participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) at Narmer American School to name but a few of the interests of our pupils. It has been a pleasure to have known this group of young people, they are a very pleasant and respectful bunch and I wish them all the very best for the future.

I am fortunate to be 10A’s tutor for the second year in a row as they are truly an entertaining and friendly group. Each and every member has their idiosyncrasies that make them who they are and I am proud of the progress they are making, both at school and as individuals. I enjoy seeing them every morning and around school and they have an uncanny ability to cheer me up if I’m having a bad day. They really are a special group of pupils who always bring a smile to my face.

This year has been a busy, exciting and reflective one. All the pupils have had to invest more time, care and effort into their everyday College life, with the onset of examinations. Learning to juggle their social calendar alongside this has been a tough challenge. For some of the cohort they have had to take on the extra responsibility of being our first MCE Sixth Form; what a fantastic first! They have really stepped up, learnt a lot about themselves and how to be role models for the College. Year 11 and the Lower Sixth have enjoyed the delights and freedom of having a common room and setting up their own space to be a creative, friendly, (sometimes) productive and calm learning environment and a place to eat their pot noodles. We have had numerous dress up days; great Halloween costumes, literature characters and traditional dress. Our pupils have looked fabulous. They have enjoyed university visits, cooking and debate competitions, engineering challenges with spaghetti and a few pushed themselves hard to complete the 10km pyramid run, a big well done for all their efforts! So many of them have worked tremendously hard and have been collecting up all those praise postcards, let’s hope that all their determination pays off and they are delighted with their results in the summer. This year has seen our first cohort of Lower Sixth pupils through to Upper Sixth and the Year 11s about to embark on their Sixth Form journey. It has been such a busy year - one that has seen a new Pupil Leadership Team put in place, a new Work Experience programme implemented and our first AS examinations taken. Year 11 and Lower Sixth have proven themselves to be worthy at the top of Malvern College Egypt and I have no doubts that next year’s full Sixth Form will take the lead in another exciting year. We, as the Lewis House Captains, have thoroughly enjoyed this school year. It was a wonderful experience and a year we will definitely remember. Many moments stand out such as, Lewis winning the swimming gala and the boys 10/11 and girls 7/8/9 teams winning the football tournament. However, this year’s biggest highlight wasn’t the achievement we saw in competitions, but the display of passion and team spirit by the Lewis pupil body in every event, sport related or not. A lot of new things were brought to Lewis this year that elevated the experience of being in the House, such as the mascot, vice-captains and House crest. In our opinion the House matured a lot in the past year and has made us very proud. None of this would have been possible without the endless help and support we saw from our Head of House, Mrs. Moore, and the Head of the Senior House System, Ms. Pante. This year was such an amazing experience for us. We were able to work collaboratively alongside staff and pupils. It has been a privilege being part of the Prefect team and the Elgar House Captains this year. Activities and events such as bake sales and visiting our charity was only a small portion of what made this year very special. Our House did exceptionally well in the multiple events such as the Debate, photography, and football inter-House competitions. During the football competition, our extraordinary house mascot (The Dragon) was introduced to the pupils. Without a doubt, our House has been through several defeats, but it has only made our team spirit stronger. Being this academic year’s Foster House Captains has been a pleasure from beginning to end. Working alongside our Head of House, Mr. Luke Webb, Vice Captains and Head of the Senior House System, Ms. Isabel Pante, we were able to organise successful inter-house events and competitions. With our collaborative ideas, we were able to provide both Foster and Malvern pupils with opportunities to hone their skills and express their talents, both athletic and academic. Pupils performed exceptionally well in the inter-house debates, as well as accumulating a large number of merits. With the introduction of our House mascot, the Crocster, and our specialised House Crest, we were able to give a face and personality to the House. This year has been a very successful year for Sanger. We were placed first in the benchball competition and in the football tournament both our Year 10 and 11 boys and our Year 7, 8 and 9 girls came second. We beat all the Houses on Earth Day by producing the best costume for the Trashion Show. Sanger is very proud to have a rising star in our midst, Iffah Ariffin in 8M, winner of MCE’s Got Talent! As House Captains we are proud of how much our House has evolved in this academic year; our team spirit remained strong and unaffected by any of our downfalls.
