WELCOME FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, The current worldwide situation with COVID-19 has led to significant changes in the way that MCE, and many other schools around the world, has operated as an educational establishment. All members of our community have faced steep learning curves, from the teachers speedy adaptation of curriculum and resources to suitable formats for an online environment to the parents engagement and support with the children accessing the learning platforms. However, I have been truly delighted by the spirit on show from so many members of the MCE family that has led to significantly positive outcomes in our new, and hopefully temporary, ‘normal’. The current situation has curtailed events ranging from International Day to Sports Days, but many exciting activities have still taken place. The pages in this edition of the Malvern View represent a small glimpse at the events that took place prior to the school closure and a preview of the successes encountered through the online learning.

MCE SENIORS Graduation 2020

From the Head of Sixth Form, Jennifer Burnett, to the leaving and graduating pupils of 2020: This year marks such an exciting year for Malvern College Egypt – we celebrate the first ever graduating class, the Class of 2020. Despite the most unprecedented times we have faced over the past few months, the pupils of Malvern College Egypt have persevered and have successfully secured university offers from across the world and we are thrilled to be celebrating their successes. This may well be a small year group, but trust me when I say, they are incredibly resilient and beyond talented. On behalf of everyone in the MCE community, we wish our graduates and those leaving us this year, the very best of luck in the next chapter of their lives. You will be sorely missed, but our doors are always open and we look forward to hearing all about what you have been up to in the years to come.

ALY MARZOUK

Aly has been an asset to Malvern College Egypt and more recently to our Sixth Form. As Head Boy and Head of MUN, Aly has dedicated his time to all aspects of College life, he is the definition of an ‘all rounder’. As part of Aly’s participation in MUN, Aly and his team kindly donated their prize money to charity earlier this year. Always arriving to school impeccably dressed, he has been a leading member of the newly established Sixth Form – often being an advocate of the student voice. Aly’s passion for his future in Mechanical Engineering has been evident over the past few years and we know he will be incredibly successful in this field. Aly – you have worked so hard and we wish you the very best of luck.

EZZELDIN SHARAF

Ezzeldin has bought such character and charm to our Sixth Form over the past two years. His personality without a doubt, will be sorely missed at MCE. Thanks to Ezz, pupils across the year groups have settled into College life thanks to the trusting and friendly shoulder he extends to them. Ezz has helped set the standards that we now work by within the Sixth Form – his academic focus and achievements have shown what dedication and motivation can accomplish. Ezz is going into Management for his chosen degree and I can think of no one better to lead a team of people through whatever comes their way. Good luck Ezz, we will miss you.

AHMED RADWAN

Ahmed has shown such resilience over the past two years. His drive to achieve top grades has been inspiring to those around him. Whilst he appears calm and often laidback, beneath it all is someone who is focused and motivated. Ahmed’s passion will shine on at AUC and I know we have not heard the last of the infamous Ahmed Radwan. You have been a huge part of the MCE Sixth Form and you will be again in the societies and communities that will continue to surround you. Good luck, Ahmed.

SYAKIRAH ARIFFIN

Syakirah is by far one of the most deserving and hardworking pupils I have ever had the privilege to mentor. Her determination and perseverance has been infectious amongst the rest of the Sixth Form and she has set the bar high. Her passion for wanting to study Medicine never came to halt; entrance exams, unit exams and final A2 revision pushed her to limits she didn’t think she was capable of. Time and time again, Syakirah found her strength and continued on. The loss to Malvern College Egypt is The University of Brunei’s gain and we wish you the very best of luck for the future.

DIARMUID O CONNOR CHALLIS

Diarmuid joined Malvern College Egypt during Lower Sixth with a sheer determination to succeed onto Medicine. His enthusiasm and drive for Maths and Science has often had me speechless. I remember the first meeting we had with Diarmuid, where I sat back and thought ‘he is going to go so far…’ – low and behold I was right. The University of Aberdeen will be gaining what I can only describe as an exceptional pupil. Whilst you are quiet in nature, Diarmuid, you have been a true asset to the MCE Sixth Form and I thank you for the support and trust you have given your peers. Good luck, Diarmuid.

The MCE community of pupils, teachers, staff and parents have worked collaboratively in the midst of COVID-19. Having to shift classes to e-learning was a steep learning curve for all involved, but it proved our pupils to be incredibly resilient and adaptable. Our pupils are actively persevering with their Malvern education through e-learning, and MCE is extremely proud of them all.

NURSERIES EVENT

MCE invited representatives from several top nurseries in Cairo to attend MCE’s annual “Open Morning for Nursery Principals”. The principals had the opportunity to meet with our Headmaster and Head of Primary who then led the principals through our Early Years learning environment. It was a great chance for the principals to explore the school campus and learn more about what an MCE education is all about.

OPTIONS EVENING AND OPTIONS MORNING

A very successful Options Evening session was held to discuss the IBDP & A – Levels pathways available to our older pupils. The session was aimed at those pupils completing their IGCSE examinations this year along with their parents. Following an informative presentation by the Head of IB and Head of Sixth Form, attendees met with Heads of Faculty and subject teachers in the library. The session was regarded as very beneficial by all involved. We now wish good luck to these pupils as they move forward to their chosen courses in the Sixth Form. Our IGCSE Options Morning was a massive success - we were pleased to see such a strong turn out with almost every parent of Year 8 in attendance. It was wonderful to see pupils joining their parents for the session. Key members of staff gave presentations and parents and pupils were then able to meet Heads of Faculty and key members of Secondary School teaching staff in the piazza to answer questions and to open up new areas of conversation about the IGCSE subjects on offer at MCE. All in all, it was an informative session for Year 8 parents and pupils.

SECONDARY SCHOOL

BOOK WEEK

In March, MCE celebrated our annual book week. We were lucky to have children’s author Dina ElAbd visit us and work with pupils throughout the week. Dina led an assembly with the whole Secondary School, during which she read from some of her books, and spoke about the process of becoming a writer and publishing a book in Egypt. The pupils had the opportunity to ask questions and were curious about where the inspiration for her stories came from. Following this, each class had story-writing workshops with Dina, in which she taught them how to plan their own stories. Groups of Secondary School pupils also spent time in the Primary School library, reading stories to the children in Early Years. They enjoyed helping the children choose their books and talking to them about the stories. Unfortunately, due to adverse weather, the school was closed on the final day of Book Week and activities such as the door decorating competition and the dress-up day were not able to go ahead as planned. This was disappointing, but we know that staff and pupils will be able to use their ideas in forward planning for next year’s events.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

BOOK WEEK

“Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” Roald Dahl. This year was the 20th World Book Day and is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries around the world. Malvern College Egypt was no exception and, in their dedication to inspiring a love of reading and writing in all pupils, teachers across the Primary School spent many long hours planning and preparing exciting Literacy based activities for Book Week 2020.

Pupils across the Primary School were involved in a host of exciting activities; from designing their classroom door display, writing and illustrating a range of stories, readathons and writing book reviews, being a Book Buddy, donating books for the Book Swap, to meeting the Author Dina Elabd to find out first-hand, how to become a successful author! There were also many opportunities during the week to visit the book shops set up in the main reception area to browse and buy both fiction and non-fiction books.

Book Week also provided an invaluable opportunity for Parents to attend the ‘Parent Guide to the Reading Process’ Workshops presented by our English Coordinator Miss Louise Collier. Book Week has always been one of the pupil’s favourite themed weeks at the College and we have no doubt that this year was no exception. For our parents, we hope it generated a renewed enthusiasm to continue to read with your children and explore the world of books together; to focus attention on the value of reading and writing to help create an informed generation of young readers and writers; who may well be tomorrow’s bestselling authors!

MAGIC SHOW

The Magic Show for Year 3 was an absolute delight for the pupils. The show included lots of wonderful magic, such as coins disappearing from a bucket and re-appearing from the pupils (to their astonishment), ribbon and card tricks, with the pupils occasionally going up on stage to participate in the performances. The magic show ended with lots of dancing with the pupils as well as the teachers.

LANGUAGES DAY

Languages were the flavour of the day in our annual celebration of language and culture. Primary and Secondary pupils showed off their language skills when they performed songs, poems and sketches in a variety of languages including French, Italian, Spanish and Romanian in our ‘Les Quatre Saisons’ show. Activities on offer during the Secondary School lunchtime included asking for biscuits and hot chocolate in a different language, a staff concert, Arabic calligraphy and more activities that took place in lesson. HOUSE MUSICAL COMPETITION Pupils from all Houses spent two weeks preparing for the House Music competition during their lunchtimes and outside of school. The Houses all picked a musical out of the hat and performed a short five-minute piece of dance choreography from the musical. Elgar did a piece from ‘The Greatest Showman’, which celebrated differences between people. Foster performed a medley from ‘Grease’, a production that a lot of the pupils had not heard of. Lewis also performed a medley from ‘The Lion King’ with a mixture of everyone’s favourites. Finally, Sanger performed a piece from ‘High School Musical’. The judges scored Houses on a variety of categories including choreography, group execution, overall effect and background and props used. The winning team, who won by only 21 points out of a possible 400, was Sanger House, who received a Special congratulations to House captains Malak and Farah, who had put a huge amount of effort into organising the rehearsals and creating the choreography. A tremendous effort by all involved.

BANQUE DU CAIRE Banque de Claire attended MCE to run a range of activities for some of the pupils studying Economics or Business Studies. After attending an information and Q&A session in the Theatre there were three challenges for the pupils to take part in: a ball-dribbling contest, a quiz on the morning session, and the game of “grab the money�, in which jets of air sent money of various denominations spinning and the contestants had to simultaneously grab and hold money using only one hand. The top prize for the pupil with the highest combined score across all activities included a trip to the UK! Congratulations to Salma whose nimble fingers grabbed enough money to take her into the lead right at the end - enjoy your prize! The collaboration between Banque Du Caire and MCE allowed the pupils to combine the learning from the classroom with real world situations and everyone enjoyed the competitive element too!

MCE is so proud of our first graduating class, Class of 2020. Congratulations to Ahmed Mohamed Radwan, Aly Mohamed Marzouk, Diarmuid O’Connor-Challis, EzzElDin Hazem Sharaf, and Izzatus Syakirah Araffin. They have received offers from outstanding universities in the UK, including University of Birmingham, University of Manchester, University of Exeter, University of Liverpool, and the University of London, as well as the AUC here in Cairo.

ELGAR HOUSE Hope Village Society HVS Every year we review our House charities to see how our partnerships are working and if our support is still needed. This year, the Heads of Elgar House in Secondary and Primary have been on the lookout for a new House charity. This has been led by Mrs. Solomon and Mr. Webb, who identified a very worthwhile cause in the Hope Village Society. Hope Village Society cares for children in difficult circumstances working with orphans who have been abandoned and those deprived of family care, such as street children. The Elgar House dress up day saw pupils dressing up in mix and match clothes. Well done to those pupils who really made an effort to make sure their clothes did not match. As well as the basketball competition at lunchtime the House captains, Emy and Mariam organised some fun activities to raise some further money. The money raised went towards this new Elgar House charity.

FOSTER HOUSE

Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA( The Foster House charity is the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA). They have 2 shelters, one for dogs and one for cats. ESMA cares for injured and abandoned animals, providing medical care and arranging rehoming. Pupils in Foster were part of the first House Charity visit of 2020, travelling to ESMA. Fifteen pupils from Primary and School were given a tour of the dog shelter and the newly built cat shelter. They also handed over 18,000LE that has been raised over the last year from activities ranging from International Day to the regular House events. The pupils enjoyed the trip tremendously and were sad to say goodbye to the animals, but look forward to the continued relationship between Foster and ESMA.

LEWIS HOUSE

African Hope Learning Centre The Lewis charity is African Hope Learning Centre in Maadi. African Hope was set up in 1998 and today supports over 450 pupils, providing education for children and young people who are displaced (refugees) due to unsafe environments in their home country. Zeina and Salma, the Lewis House Captains, gave a very enjoyable assembly to MCE pupils. This included a section on their visit to Africa Hope Learning Centre as well as a short quiz with participants from each House. The quiz asked questions about all the musicals chosen for the House Music competition and included some very difficult questions about the lyrics and the stories. Well done to Zeina and Salma for organising a very informative and entertaining assembly.

SANGER HOUSE Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE (

The Sanger charity is the Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE). APE promotes recycling projects in Cairo and supports the people within the recycling and rubbish collection areas, by providing them with work and education classes. The final amount raised for the annual Sanger Dress up day, was 9,542LE. Thank you to all parents for your generous donations and putting in the time to help raise money for APE. Malak and Farah, the Sanger House Captains, gave a very enjoyable assembly. It is events like these that really give the pupils an opportunity to lead and gain vital experience in preparing and presenting in front of a large crowd. Well done to Malak and Farah for organising a very interesting assembly.

ORABI CAMP Pupils thoroughly enjoyed their camping trips during the enrichment week, including the Orabi camp, where the pupils learned skills needed to live in a campsite, while they stayed in a range of wooden huts, Bedouin tents, and hiking tents.

THE GOUNA CAMP

The Gouna camp was a unique learning and camping experience by the Red Sea, overlooking a small lake and enjoying nature-oriented sports and activities. These included sailing, kayaking, land sailing, fishing, mini golf, horseback riding, biking and more.

FAYOUM TRIP On the first day from the Adventure Week pupils, they went to Tunis village near Fayoum for a delicious local breakfast before a fun filled day in the desert. Activities included hiking, sandboarding, volleyball, football, swimming and even horse-riding. After a tiring day, pupils were treated to a desert BBQ before the long drive back to Cairo.

THE WELLSPRING CAMP The WellSpring camp aimed to give pupils new skills and values in a fun atmosphere. The children were assigned to two teams, Aqua and Vida, and competed against each other in games called Capture The Flag and Golden Ball. These are based on tag rugby and bench ball. They also took part in individual activities - the high ropes and zip line. In the evenings, the children had some quieter activities inside where they reflected on their values. On the final evening, there was a talent contest; children sang, performed gymnastics, drew and demonstrated football tricks. Over the week, the children gradually learnt the lyrics and moves to Family Force 5’s ‘Chainsaw’ song, which became the anthem of the trip.

THE ZULU SCOUTS CAMP The Zulu Scouts camp took place on our campus, with scout themed activities including a treasure hunt, arts and wooden structures workshops, and camp construction games. The camp construction was a delight, as pupils were split into troops with their own Zulu leader and were responsible for building their own tent and camp area. The cooking competition was challenging with much fewer resources, but pupils were able to learn to collaborate and persevere through new challenging circumstances.

LONDON TRIP Pupils between the year groups of Year 8 and 10 enjoyed a fantastic trip to London. During the trip, the group attended three pieces of live theatre, each engaging and visually stimulating. From the shock and horror of ‘The Woman in Black’, to the ever lovable ‘The Lion King’ and rounded off with the majestic child-favourite ‘Matilda’.

Aside from the time spent on the West End, pupils all participated in a performance workshop with the World-renowned Pineapple Dance Studios, took a magical trip to Hogwarts for the Harry Potter studio tour, visited various museums and landmark attractions to absorb a variety of cultures, indulged in famous cuisines from all around the globe, and visited a plethora of shops. Pupils were able to really understand the beauty and all London has to offer.

Ski Trip

The MCE 2020 ski trip was another exceptionally successful trip. 20 pupils and 3 teachers braved the early morning start to catch the flight to Geneva before transferring to La Tzoumaz. For those who had made this journey before, they knew the pain of the early morning wake up would all be worth it when we got to resort, it we were not disappointed. The evening we arrived it snowed, and kept snowing for the next few days. The pistes were constantly being covered in fresh snow and on every run, our pupils were making ‘fresh tracks’. In short, it was a skiers paradise. Due to the new snow, the small falls (or which they were many) resulted in snowmen and women replacing what was once an MCE pupil. The benefit to this was that all of our falls did not hurt!

The progress that was made by all pupils, in what were sometimes challenging conditions, was amazing. Every pupil was challenged on every run they did by the fantastic Les Efles instructors. By day 3, the pupils who had never seen snow before were skiing fantastically and our more advanced groups were starting push their instructors to get them to go to more challenging runs. After what was probably the quickest week of the school year, we found ourselves on the final day. This meant race day and although world records were not broken due to the constant fresh now, fun was had by all. After skiing, a fantastic awards evening took place and our pupils were recognised as ‘the best group we have had all year’ by the Les Efles team. I am sure that all pupils who travelled to La Tzoumaz would like to join me in thanking Ms Lawrence and Mr Russel for accompanying the trip but also the fantastic team at Les Elfes who make the week so memorable.

PYRAMIDS MARATHON MCE sent fifteen representatives to the Great Pyramids of Giza to complete different distances of 6km, 10km and 21.1km. This is a great accomplishment with the six boys demonstrating resilience and an element of risk-taking to finish the race. All runners were able to complete their distances and were great ambassadors of the College. Special congratulations go to Ahmed and Mohamed who were the first pupils to finish the half marathon in 2 hours and 35 minutes.

U18 NETBALL VS CES Our U18 netball team played against CES. It was a tough match for the girls as it was the first one of the year, but they put all their energy into it. It was a fast-paced game that kept the girls on their toes. The girls showed good team spirit and sportsmanship and look forward to their next opponents when competitions resume.

U16 BOYS VS BCCIS The U16 boys took on BCCIS for their first fixture of the season and came up short against a strong and wellpracticed side. The opposition started well and took an early lead, with constant pressure on the MCE defence for the entire first half. The MCE boys played some great football for the first 5 minutes of the second half and were unlucky not to bring a goal or two back. Three Year 8 boys represented the team, playing several age groups up and did not look out of place.

SWIMMING COMPETITION

The MCE Lions swim team competed in the 1st swimming competition of 2020 at Maadi British International School. 27 keen and enthusiastic swimmers, who have been training hard since the CCA’s started in January, took part. All the pupils competed hard, with some even taking part in races that were not their main stroke, just to get points for the school. We had swimmers swimming up age groups to fill the races as well. We had a great debut for the team from Daniel and Sophia, who took part in a few more races than first expected, showing multiple Malvern qualities, including resilience, risk-taking and ambition.

SPORTS DAYS MCE hosted the Early Years and Key Stage 1 sports day, where the pupils showcased all their hard work. Both days were fantastic spectacles with pupils giving it their all and collaborating through teamwork. These days certainly proved to further their understanding of several of our Malvern qualities, including collaboration, resilience and ambition. A big thank you to all the staff that helped, and a special mention to all the Year 9 pupils who helped with the two days, taking on key roles throughout.

SIXTH FORM

This academic year has been an incredibly busy one for the Sixth Form at Malvern College Egypt. With our first Graduating cohort, it has been the last hurdle for our A2 pupils. We started the year with a visit from Blooms Bank Egypt, who held an interactive workshop for the entire Sixth Form on money management strategies. The concept was to help prepare our pupils for when they head to university and be more financially independent. IDP also came to visit the Sixth Form along with 26 Global Universities. Pupils were given the opportunity to meet with the representatives and discuss courses and application procedures. University fairs are well turned out events at MCE - we cannot wait to hold more in 2020-2021. Alongside our career and university events, the Sixth Formers have been the forefront of many debates, held by Mr Webb throughout the year. Our own Head Girl, Mariam, was a lead contender in many of the debates. Throughout the year, the Upper Sixth and some Lower Sixth pupils have been submitting their university applications in across the globe. Offers have been coming in from across the UK and Europe. From the University of Manchester to the University of Amsterdam, we have no doubt that our pupils will go on to be incredibly successful, spreading the Malvern Qualities wherever they go.

Shortly before the COVID-19 closure, our Sixth Formers experienced Enrichment Week, in which the entire MCE community was involved. Those who opted to stay in the College took part in a rigorous ‘Revision Week’, which included some cookery lessons with Ms Burnett and Mrs Maher, where pupils were able to put their culinary skills to the test! Despite the closure that has affected us, this year has been so busy. Pupils have continued their studies for A Levels and IBDP online via Zoom, and have continued to show the resilience and determination that they have demonstrated all year. While this is not the end, we have high hopes for our first graduating class, Class of 2020, we take pride in their work ethic in such unsettled times. We wish the graduating Class of 2020 all the best in their future endeavours – wherever they may be.

Co-curricular activities are one of the core elements of a Malvern education, aiding in our goal of providing a holistic education. This latest CCA programme offered over 60 choices, including Leap Development Hub, which helps children fulfil their potential to become responsible citizens and future leaders. From Ballet to Taekwondo, Sudoku to Archery, we also offered CCA’s to support pupils’ classes, such as the iGCSE’s, or Homework clubs. We encourage pupils to try different things, in order to become well-rounded and active citizens in the 21st century.

Malvern College Egypt holds a firm commitment to absolute and fundamental values that have stood the test of time. While we refer to them as “Malvern Qualities” they are as relevant in the town of Malvern UK as they are in our city of Cairo.
