There is something truly captivating about Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. In less than 2 years since it opened on October 3, 2009, this grand pathway in the sky has drawn over 1,000,000 visitors who stroll, cycle, walk, jog, and roller blade over its mighty steel trusses. They come to gaze at the picturesque Hudson River flowing 212 feet below, to immerse themselves in solitude, and to reflect in an especially pleasant setting.

Walkway State Park is truly a special place. It represents a people’s shared desire to preserve the best of our history, our culture, and our spirit, and stands today because the people of the Hudson Valley vowed to transform a crippled relic of the Industrial Age into something new and vital, something that will keep contributing to our society for another century. Thankfully, against all odds, they succeeded.

Walkway Over the Hudson is all about partnerships with people who are dedicated to supporting Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge! We’re busy doing things that will impact the Walkway for generations to come and we could use your help. We’re constructing a 21-story, river front elevator; raising funds to build a Visitors Center; providing activities for the park’s expected 750,000 annual visitors; and will continue to recruit and train volunteers. Our critical mission depends upon engaged members, volunteers, and donors who share our vision for the park. Please support the Walkway in one of these ways:

Support the Walkway 4:02 PM

.

When trains began rumbling over the bridge in 1888, it was the longest bridge in the world— a title it held for over a year. It became a key transportation hub linking western raw materials to eastern industrial centers, until a fire in 1974 crippled the railroad bridge and it fell into disrepair and an uncertain future. When you visit the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park you’ll be standing on an important pillar of American history. Before it became the Walkway, this massive 1.28-mile steel structure was known as the PoughkeepsieHighland Railroad Bridge, an Industrial Age superstar that once bore the weight of 3,500 freight cars a day!

A Brief History 9/22/11

N. C herr y St

The bridge re-opened on October 3, 2009 after a two-year construction effort. Today the Walkway is the longest elevated pedestrian park in the world, returning it to the record books after 121 years! It took another 35 years before a grassroots nonprofit called Walkway Over the Hudson was able to successfully galvanize public and private support in the Hudson Valley and statewide to save the historic bridge and transform it into the Walkway State Park. Walkway Over the Hudson is looking for the next generation of visionaries to support the long term stewardship of Walkway State Historic Park. Stewards of the Walkway are people who recognize that the Walkway still has a long way to go before we realize its full potential. For more information please call 845-454-9649.

Join the Walkway Stewards Campaign • It’s estimated that nearly 1 million rivets are used to hold the 20,000 tons of steel together. Each of the 4 river piers contains 40,000 tons of timber, stone and concrete. • A series of LED-filled tubes provide lighting for occasional night-time use. More than 81,000 light-emitting diodes use less than $1.80 an hour of electricity. • Walkway State Park’s deck is comprised of 973 prefabricated concrete panels, each weighing up to 15 tons. The deck is 24’ wide with a 4’ 6” railing. • The Walkway soars 212 feet above the Hudson River and continues 130 feet below the river’s surface to compacted gravel. • At 6,767 feet (or 1.28 miles) Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is the world’s longest, elevated pedestrian bridge.
