Originally opened as the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, the first train crossed in January 1889. Known as “The Great Connector,” the bridge linked the industrial northeast with the raw goods of the midwest. At the time, the span was the longest in the United States.

Railroad traffic continued until a fire on May 8, 1974. Dormant for the next three and a half decades, the bridge reopened as Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park on October 3, 2009, now the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE WALKWAY East Gate Arrival Plaza

WALKWAY’S FIRST TEN YEARS

In Spring 2020, construction is set to begin on the Walkway’s new East Gate Arrival Plaza (the area just outside of the Poughkeepsie entrance atop the Washington Street stairs). This will include an enlarged pathway, new Friends Pavilion with room for shopping, increased seating, and a covered space with audio and video capabilities for use by tour groups and special events.

Light The Walkway To improve safety and security, enhance nighttime events, simplify closing procedures, and further showcase the Hudson Valley, Walkway seeks to leverage state-of-theart technology to improve lighting both on and under the bridge deck.

Since opening, Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park has hosted more than five million people from all 50 states and over 50 countries.

In 2012, Walkway Over the Hudson achieved a new Guinness World Record for the longest line of dancers when 2,569 people came together to dance the Hokey Pokey.

Parker-Washington Corner Park Walkway is committed to improving its City of Poughkeepsie neighborhood via the creation of a park on the corner of Washington Street and Parker Avenue. With landscaping, new sidewalks, and seating, this space will give visitors a positive first impression of the bridge and the surrounding community.

Accessibility and Sustainability We want everyone in the world — regardless of their circumstances and level of ability — to see our sweeping views and experience the magic of the Walkway. As we enter our second decade, we are steadfastly committed to building on our reputation as one of the most accessible and environmentally-friendly parks in New York State.

Be Part of Our Campaign to Sustain

walkway.org/donate

Rebuilt and reopened following a decades-long grassroots campaign, Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park exists today thanks to the efforts of a dedicated friends group, the Dyson Foundation, the generosity of many donors, and a strong partnership with New York State Parks.

In 2014, the Walkway opened a 21-story glass-enclosed elevator on the banks of the Hudson River at Upper Landing Park, creating amazing views of the structure and a direct connection to the waterfront. Inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame in 2016, the Walkway connects the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in Ulster County with the William R. Steinhaus Rail Trail in Dutchess County. In 2018 and 2019, the Walkway constructed Welcome Centers on each approach featuring indoor restrooms, public seating, and informational signage. These sustainable buildings have transformed the Walkway experience.
