Rhinebeck, which also includes the picture-postcard hamlet of Rhinecliff, has a population of 7,500 and boasts breathtaking views of the Catskill and Berkshire mountains. Regularly cited as one of top school districts in the Hudson Valley, the Rhinebeck Central School District encompasses Chancellor Livingtson Elementary School, Bulkeley Middle School, and Rhinebeck High School. The area has two libraries and numerous houses of worship. Among Rhinebeck’s state-of-the-art medical facilities is Northern Dutchess Hospital, whose maternity and orthopedic care programs are considered among America’s best. In 2016, its emergency department got a $1.7 million expansion, adding treatment and support areas. Rhinebeck is known as an extremely commuterfriendly community, thanks to the adjacent Taconic State Parkway and Amtrak rail system, both of which provide easy access to the New York metropolitan area. RHINEBECK HISTORY
Rhinebeck Post Office
F
irst inhabited by Native American tribes and later settled by the Dutch, Rhinebeck embodies the Colonial era. The Rhinebeck Village Historic District contains almost 300 buildings from over 200 years of the settlement’s history. Comprising exactly half of the celebrated Sixteen Mile District, a corridor of opulent estates constructed by some of the nation’s wealthiest families, the region is a treasure trove for history buffs and lovers of great architecture. The town of Rhinebeck was established in 1686 when members of the Esopus and Sepasco tribes traded 2,200 acres of land to Dutch settlers Gerrit Artsen, Arie Roosa, Henrick Kip, and Jan Elting, all of whom have descendants living in the area to this day. The Dutchmen dubbed the spot Kipsbergen, but by 1713 Judge Henry Beekman had rechristened it Ryn Beck, which eventually became Rhinebeck. Several of the village’s award-winning shops, eateries, and other businesses are housed within historic structures. These include the Beekman Arms, a delightful country inn and restaurant that was built by Arent Traphagen in 1766 and is the oldest continuously operating inn in America. The post office, built in 1940, pictured above with town historian Nancy Kelly, is in the Colonial Revival style, with a steep-sloped shingle roof in the front and fieldstone structure. Its design was overseen by President Roosevelt, whose ancestors lived in the region. (FDR’s home and library are just a few miles down the road in Hyde Park.) Other historical structures of note include the 8 |

Chancellor Livingston House, which serves as the home of the local chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Just north of the village is the Quitman House for Historic Preservation, a former parsonage built for the Rev. Frederick Quitman in 1789 that now serves as the Museum of Rhinebeck History. The Quitman House is located close to the Palantine Farmstead, which dates from 1727. A short drive south of the village lies Wilderstein, a lavish, Queen Anne-style mansion constructed in 1888 by moneyed landowner Thomas Holy Suckley. Situated on a still-maintained 40-acre estate, the site’s museum and trails are open to the public. Further south, in Staatsburgh, is Mills Mansion, an ornately appointed Beaux Arts home. Built in 1832, Mills Mansion features 65 rooms and 14 bathrooms. Seasonal tours of the historic site are available. Also nearby is the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, known around the world for its dazzling daredevil air show, its large collection of World War I-era airplanes, and its on-premises museum.

here’s nothing like it in the world,” says Sinterklaas Festival creator Jeanne Fleming. “It’s our own handmade, homegrown, truly one-of-a-kind holiday tradition that brings the whole community together with joy, magic, creativity, and spectacular sights and sounds. The entire village becomes a fantasyland; we have a Magical Pageant, an Enchanted Storytelling House, a Toy Theater Festival, a marvelous Dancing Bear and the Snow King and Queen. And it all leads up to a beautiful Children’s Starlight Parade with Sinterklaas and his beloved horse.” On Saturday (December 2 this year), Rhinebeck greets him with a joyous community-wide day of celebration: free workshops and shows from local and regional artists, storytellers and performers, merchants, and restaurants. Community Tree Lighting
T
he holiday season in Rhinebeck begins each year at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, held this year on November 18. Residents and visitors can get a jump start on the season’s festivities before the holiday rush (there’s a large Menorah, too, lit according to the year’s Hanukkah calendar). It’s a great day to visit the many shops in the village before joining in the fun. There are winter-themed activities for the whole family followed by a parade through the village and then the tree lighting itself in Rhinebeck Bank Plaza on East Market Street. Among the many special features of the afternoon are musical performances by local groups. Horse-drawn wagon rides are provided by the members of 4-H “Gentle Giants” (an agricultural education program for young people) and their beautiful Belgian draft horses. According to Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Claudia Cooley, the Chamber, and the many local groups who work together on the afternoon look forward to the occasion each year. “The streets are full of energy that day, and when everyone gathers around the tree for the kickoff of the holiday season, the crowd experiences everything that makes quintessential small-town America so magical,” she says. rhinebeckchamber.com

hinebeck is known far and wide as a culinary mecca. With over a dozen exceptional restaurants to choose from, the town is no stranger to great food. Over the past several years, diners have an ever-increasing list of craft beverages to pair with their meals. With the arrival of Grand Cru, Milea Vineyards, and Dutch’s Spirits, the town and surrounding area is establishing itself as a destination for fermentation.
Grand Cru has been a favorite for visitors and locals alike for years. Slinging hard-to-find craft brews and cheese from around the world, Grand Cru is one of the Hudson Valley’s premier destinations for lovers of great beer. In summer of 2017, they’ll be embarking on their latest venture: the Haymaker Restaurant. Similar to Grand Cru, the Haymaker is all about the beer, but the new space on Route 308 will feature an outdoor beer garden and an expanded menu. Family-friendly comfort food like macaroni and cheese, Philly cheesesteaks, sliders, and wings pairs well with a relaxed, informal atmosphere. They’ll also be narrowing their beer selection to focus exclusively on craft beer from the Hudson Valley. For those who prefer grapes over grains, Milea Estate Vineyard in Staatsburg is one of the Hudson Valley’s newest wineries. Since their first crush in the fall of 2015, they’ve been making a name for themselves as a standout. Much of their wine is grown right on their picturesque 98-acre estate for a definitive taste of the region’s terroir. Their Pinot Noir offers a lush, woody nose and finishes with just the right amount of acidity, making it the perfect companion to roasted lamb or a steak from the grill. Just a short drive away is Dutch’s Spirits, offering imbibers something with a little more punch.
Dutch’s took its name from bootlegger Dutch Schultz, who operated an illegal moonshine distillery at the decades-old farm during prohibition. The Sugar Wash Moonshine harkens back to his original recipe, and is a lot smoother than the name might imply, with notes of cut grass and butterscotch. The three-story renovated barn was built on the footprint of Schultz’s original operation, and features a tasting room with over 75 New York State-produced spirits from a variety of craft distillers. Even the Culinary Institute of America is getting in on the action. The brand-new Brewery at The CIA offers students and the public alike a chance to try delicious, campus-made craft beer. With the addition of the Post Road Brew House, their newest pop-up restaurant, they’ve firmly acknowledged diners’ growing preferences for great beer in a casual setting. Like that of the Haymaker, the menu emphasizes classic comfort staples, like the Pastrami Rueben Sandwich or Fish and Chips. With so many great options, there’s never been a better time for craft beverage enthusiasts to explore what Rhinebeck has to offer. Although it’s only 90 miles north of Manhattan, it can sometimes feel like another world. With 46 |

access to the Amtrak station in Rhinecliff, it’s easy for residents and weekenders alike to commute both North and South. The housing stock also has enough diversity to suit any budget or style preference. “There really are all kinds of homes here, from the most basic, small home you might start out with, to family-style homes, to very large, deluxe homes with a lot of property,” explains Hallenbeck. In the village, there’s a variety of historic homes built between the early 20th century and the 17th century, when the town was founded, but there are other styles available as well. “A lot of our houses in this area are traditional, but I do see some more modern homes popping up,” says Redmond. With beautiful scenery, a charming, historic downtown, and access to Amtrak and major roadways close by, Rhinebeck is the perfect place to buy a new home. A huge variety of different sizes and styles fit any taste, but all of them are relatively affordable compared to areas further south. “There’s really something for everyone here. Whether you’re living here full-time or looking for a weekend home,” says Hallenbeck.
