within the splendor of the Hudson Valley, Rhinebeck’s blend E ven of accessibility, economic vitality, and country charm stand out. Visitors are attracted by historic architecture and up-to-the-minute amenities. Patrons can browse antiques, clothing, home décor, books, and more, and enjoy a cornucopia of cuisine, much of it focused on local, seasonal ingredients. In summer, farms and markets and outdoor seating at many of the restaurants beckon. The crisp, picturesque fall, the charm of the village trees shining with holiday lights—there’s no “off” season here. Rhinebeck is home to a friendly, intelligent business community. When Best of Hudson Valley winner Zimmer Brothers Jewelry decided to expand, they looked to Rhinebeck for a reason. “It’s such a dynamic and closeknit retail community, and the residents are wonderful,” says Jocelyn Klastow, the fifth generation in the family business. “We’ve been enjoying a great reception, seeing familiar faces and making new friends.” 6 |

Rhinebeck features some of New York State’s loveliest pastoral landscapes, the perfect setting for a unique historic district lovingly preserved by careful zoning and planning. As far back as 1940, when a new post office was constructed, efforts were made to blend newer architecture with the distinctive Dutch styles of the earliest buildings. A group of large riverfront estates nearby are preserved as a National Historic District. Preserved open space, the Hudson River, and mountains for hiking and nearby skiing offer abundant recreational opportunities. Local trails through Ferncliff Forest, Southlands, Burger Hill, and many other spots are even nearer. Our schools are outstanding, both academically and in athletics. And the town is within easy reach of several fine private schools, as well as Bard College, Vassar College, Marist College, and

the Culinary Institute of America. Rhinebeck’s pastoral beauty and cozy village atmosphere feel a world away from the bustle of city life, but it is easily accessible from almost anywhere. The Rhinecliff Amtrak stop is minutes from the village, and the Taconic State Parkway is under a half hour. From the west, it’s an easy shot over the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, which connects to the New York State Thruway. This spring, the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum celebrated the 89th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s historic flight with the public debut of the most accurate reproduction ever created of Lindbergh’s plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, built right here—a project very much in the spirit of Rhinebeck. This isn’t the land that time forgot—it’s a place where time is preserved and celebrated, with an eye to blending the most exciting and interesting today into the best of years gone by.

RHINEBECK HISTORY

L

ocated in a prime spot along the first major thoroughfare in America, the mighty Hudson River, Rhinebeck played a key role throughout much of the country’s Colonial and Revolutionary history. The area was first settled in 1686 by the Dutch; a patent was soon awarded to Henry Beekman. In 1703, the colonial assembly funded the building of the King’s Highway, which would become Albany Post Road and Route 9, and builder William Traphagen erected a house and tavern nearby. Early Palatine settlers of German descent named the area “Rynbeck.” With the river and the highway making for easy access, the village grew and thrived. In 1733, the Reformed Dutch Church erected its first building on the site where its current one stands; in 1766, ground was broken for what is now the Beekman Arms, the oldest continuously operating hotel in America. Notables who spent time here in the 18th and early 19th centuries include George Washington, Robert Livingston, General Richard Montgomery, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The 1804 election for governor of New York was fought out between Burr and General Richard Lewis from two Rhinebeck taverns. The cottage Montgomery occupied with Livingston’s daughter Janet, now located on 8 |

Livingston Street, is the home of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and holds a collection of Revolutionary-era artifacts; it’s open by appointment and on special occasions. Through the 19th century, Rhinebeck thrived as an agricultural and manufacturing center. Its grist and paper mills were known for quality products, as was its woodworking; fine furniture and horse-drawn vehicles bearing the Rhinebeck mark were prized throughout New England and as far south as the Carolinas. Wealthy families built great showplace estates along the riverbank. Rhinebeck’s rich history is lovingly preserved. The Rhinebeck Village Historic District contains much of the architecture and layout just as it

existed by 1908. The Starr Library, founded in 1852, was the first in the Mid-Hudson Library System; the local history research center located on its lower level is a history lover’s treasure trove of early documents including rare church, cemetery and legal records, old survey maps, census records, and microfilm of the local Rhinebeck Gazette dating back to 1842. History lovers will also enjoy the Museum of Rhinebeck History, housed in an 18th-century Palatine parsonage called the Quitman House and neighboring both a 1770 farmstead and the historic Old Stone Church. And don’t miss a visit to Wilderstein, named “Wild Man’s Stone” in honor of a nearby Native American petroglyph by builder Thomas Suckley and later inhabited by his descendant Margaret, cousin and confidante to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The mansion is open for guided tours Thursdays through Sundays from May through October and decorated for special holiday tours after that; the 40-acre grounds, laid out by famed landscape architect Calvert Vaux, can be visited for free every day of the year.

FARM

hat’s your idea of farm-to-table paradise? Getting out in the orchard to pick your own? Stopping by the farmstand for the best of the morning’s harvest? Shopping among neighbors at the farmers’ market? Enjoying what master chefs can do with fresh and local ingredients? All of these? Rhinebeck, home to several farms and surrounded by dozens more, has a locavore scene that can make all those dreams a reality.

Local restaurateurs know that hungry diners expect fresh food prepared to inspire, and rise to the challenge in dozens of creative ways. Terrapin’s elegant bistro fare has its sources clearly spelled out in the menu; patrons can pair their food with drinks made at regional distilleries. The Local specializes in locally grown, seasonal, and sustainable American food and is so serious about its commitment that it lists the sources for many main ingredients right on its website. At Le Petit Bistro, there’s a European emphasis on in-house butchering, foraged and local produce 10 |

and dock-fresh seafood. The Corner, at the Hotel Tivoli, blends fresh local ingredients with exotic imports to create Mediterranean magic; Foster’s Coach House, a cornerstone with an updated menu, relies on local farmers for the fresh ingredients that accent classic London broil. At Gigi Trattoria, fresh and seasonal is key to the delicious neo-Italian “Hudson Valley Mediterranean” served up by chef/owner Laura Pensiero. Local, seasonal ingredients play a key role in the artisanal wood-fired Neapolitan pies served up at Pizzeria Posto, the housemade, hand-

crafted smoked delights served up at Smoky Rock, and the scratch-made Indian cuisine that has made Cinnamon a local favorite since even before it relocated to its chic new heart-of-thevillage space. Value-added products crafted from our local ingredients achieve widespread fame; chocolatier Oliver Kita blends local ingredients with cultural inspiration in his Great Estates line. Our surging locavore beverage scene is bringing new dreams to life, like the From the Ground Brewery at Migliorelli Farms, sited right where its fresh barley grows and utilizing local hops and fruit in its small-batch creations. Locally distilled liquor can be found at the source nearby in Pine Plains at Dutch’s Spirits at Harvest Homestead Farm, the site of an historic Prohibition-era underground distillery that has been restored. Of course, nothing beats bringing home fresh local food to cook your way. Our 20-year-old farmers’ market has been voted the Hudson Valley’s best six times and written up by Zagat and Bon Apetit magazines as one of the region’s best foodie attractions; the scene pulsates with a lively mix of growers, visitors and locals, all relishing the variety and excellence of local fare, the live entertainment, and each other’s company. The market’s open every Sunday from Mother’s Day through Thanksgiving and held indoors on alternate Sundays through the winter. You can shop local, organic food and a wide selection of other healthy supplies at Sunflower Natural Foods on Garden Street. And you’ll find CSAs, pick-your-own operations and farm stands to suit every appetite. Try Cedar Heights Orchard for apple picking in late summer and fall, or visit one of the many small farm stands in the area: Migliorelli Farms maintains theirs on the approach to the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, and it’s open seasonally through Christmas. And speaking of Christmas, Battenfeld’s Christmas Tree Farm has become a holiday tradition for many from near and far.

Sinterklaas

“This is our ninth year,” says Sinterklaas Festival creator Jeanne Fleming. “It’s our own handmade, homegrown, truly one-of-a-kind holiday tradition that brings the whole community together with joy, magic, creativity, and spectacular sights and sounds. The entire village becomes a fantasyland; we have a Magical Pageant, an Enchanted Storytelling House, a Toy Theater Festival, a marvelous Dancing Bear and the Snow King and Queen. And it all leads up to a beautiful Children’s Starlight Parade with Sinterklaas and his beloved horse.” The festival begins across the river on the last Saturday in November, with a parade and children’s workshops in Kingston and the departure of Sinterklaas by boat. The following Saturday (December 3 this year), Rhinebeck greets him with a joyous community-wide day of celebration: free workshops and shows from local and regional artists, storytellers and performers, merchants and restaurants decorated to the nines and offering festive specials. The raucous, joyful parade starts just after dark and winds from the library through the village and features artistic paper and wood puppets: fantastic, moveable sculptures of the festival’s spirit animal (this year it’s the owl) and significant characters in the narrative: the Wish Lady, the Grumpuses, and Sinterklaas himself, the archetype of a loving, kind king. Children carry illuminated stars and scepters, accompanied by several marching bands and community music groups.

EVERY YEAR, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE GATHER IN THE VILLAGE TO CELEBRATE SINTERKLAAS, A HOLIDAY TRADITION WITH DUTCH ROOTS THAT’S BEEN UPDATED INTO SOMETHING WONDROUSLY FRESH AND UNIQUELY RHINEBECK.

The festive pageantry of Sinterklaas is a unique local tradition in Rhinebeck.

A dedicated core group works year round to make the festival a reality, and some of the fund raisers—like the two annual clothing swaps and the November craft fair—have become beloved community events in their own right, to Fleming’s great joy. “It takes many hardworking hands to make this happen,” she says. “And Rhinebeck is the ideal setting. There is the charm and beauty of the village itself, with all the wonderful spaces for performances and gatherings—plus the parade coming over the hill and into the beautifully illuminated main street. But more than the architecture and natural beauty, it is the community spirit of the residents, the folks in government and business, the library and churches. It’s their enthusiasm and willingness to join together to make a totally unique, gracious, magical and welcoming day for all those who come to partake. It really does take a village. And we have a great one!”

Community Tree Lighting

T

he holiday season in Rhinebeck begins each year at the annual tree lighting ceremony at the end of November. Residents and visitors can get a jump start on the season’s festivities before the holiday rush (there’s a large Menorah, too, lit according to the year’s Hanukkah calendar). It’s a great day to visit the many shops in the village before joining in the fun. There are winter-themed activities for the whole family followed by a parade through the village and then the tree lighting itself in Rhinebeck Bank Plaza on East Market Street. Among the many special features of the afternoon are musical performances by local groups. Free horse-drawn wagon rides are provided by the members of 4-H “Gentle Giants” (an agricultural education program for young people) and their beautiful Belgian draft horses. According to Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Claudia Cooley, the Chamber and the many local groups who work together on the afternoon look forward to the occasion each year. “The streets are full of energy that day, and when everyone gathers around the tree for the kickoff of the holiday season, the crowd experiences everything that makes quintessential small-town America so magical,” she says.

GETTING TO KNOW RHINEBECK

I

f you’re looking for the Hudson Valley good life, look no further. Rhinebeck has the easy access, depth of history, quality education, and charm to make your dreams come true—at price points to suit almost every budget.

“We’re really where it’s happening now,” says Nick Staley of Staley Real Estate. “We’re on the map more than I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been doing this now for 50 years.” His family has been in the home business for four generations if you count his grandfather, who built homes in the area as a contractor. Staley’s father opened a real estate firm in 1949; now Staley and his sons operate it. “Business is pretty good, and spring brings even busier times,” says Staley’s colleague, Jim Ettenson, principal broker and founder of Rhinebeck Real Estate. A lifelong Hudson Valley resident, Ettenson has lived in Rhinebeck since 1984, and has been a licensed broker since 1992. “2015 was good overall; it was an up year. They are forecasting that 2016 will be as good. Coming out of winter, inventory is traditionally a little on the low side, but things will be moving soon.” What sort of inventory? Rhinebeck has everything from sleek condominium homes to refurbished Victorian beauties to estate properties. “We get a good mix of people who want country privacy and people who would rather live in the village,” Ettenson says. “There are places between $200,000 and $300,000, and then there’s the high end. A big, 50 |

beautiful place, totally redone, just went off the market the other day for $1.7 million. The village of Rhinebeck has always been just a little extradesirable, and that gets reflected in the homes that come on the market, in the numbers, and in how fast they sell. The rental market is hot, too; things don’t stay vacant long here.” Last year, a $3000-amonth rental had a waiting list within days. By any comparison to the lower Hudson Valley, though, Rhinebeck real estate is still a bargain— and with that smooth, easy train or highway commute, it’s a bargain many are willing to strike. Especially when you consider the priceless perks. “We have plenty of great entertainment here, we have great restaurants, great shops,” Staley says, adding that recreation opportunities such as the Hudson River and many nearby ski slopes are huge draws. “There are lots of reasons people come to Rhinebeck.” “Where else can you find something like Sinterklaas?” Ettenson asks. “Or like our Aerodrome? And the fairgrounds—they have events and festivals all season long. There are so many reasons I live here, and so many reasons others want to. And it’s an honor to help them do it.”

ith an excellent hospital right in town and dozens of medical offices tucked into the surrounding community, Rhinebeck offers a comprehensive selection of healthcare services. Whether your needs and preferences include physical therapy, surgery, homeopathy, spa services, or just good, healthy exercise and fun, you will find it all here. Northern Dutchess Hospital, our acute care facility, provides a complete range of state-of-the-art services but remains small enough to feel homey and welcoming. The $47 million new pavilion added six new operating rooms for advanced non-invasive surgical procedures, a cardiac testing center, and 40 brand-new, comfortable patient rooms. The pioneering Neugarten Family Birth Center, where about 900 babies a year are welcomed in a holistic, family-centered atmosphere, received a five-star rating from Healthgrades in 2013. The hospital is also known for cutting-edge, comprehensive orthopedic services, and won the Women’s Choice Award for orthopedics in 2014. The Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center, a 10-bed, state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility, is recognized for its high level of national accreditation and includes a large gym. Northern Dutchess was named a 2015 Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report. No matter what you need, you and your loved ones will find excellent, convenient care options in the offices of our many fine general practitioners and specialists. A recent addition to the village’s integrative wellness scene is the IZLIND Institute, founded and directed by Dr. Beth Gershuny, PhD., a diverse collaborative of healthcare providers, consultants, and educators working in evidencebased conventional/traditional and holistic/complementary approaches to reduce stress, fortify health, and revitalize potential for the body, mind, and spirit. 52 |

Spas such as Haven, the WellTree, and I Kneaded This offer stress relief from expert practitioners in beautiful, historic village settings. Yoga, Pilates, and dance studios abound, with offerings tailored to those of all experience levels seeking to tone the body and soothe the soul. Rhinebeck’s many trails are available throughout the year for recreation opportunities, whether by foot, on horseback, or on a bike. Runners thrive here, as evidenced by the many 5K and longer races in the area, such as the Mad Dash on Labor Day weekend and the annual Turkey Trot; our Hudson Valley Full Marathon is a USTAFcertified race that qualifies runners for the Boston Marathon, and the Insane Inflatable 5K obstacle course event held at the fairgrounds must be experienced to be believed. Red Hook Golf Club is an 18-hole semi-private facility that presents a challenging test for golfers of all levels. The course has hosted the New York State and Dutchess County Men’s Amateur Championships, as well as the Dutchess County Men’s and Women’s Senior Amateur Championships.

EDUCATION

E

ducation in Rhinebeck is all about serving the diverse needs of the whole person across the entire lifespan. With a vibrant public school district and many private schools within easy reach, Rhinebeck families have lots of options for children. Outstanding colleges are but a stone’s throw away, and the lifelong learning opportunities they offer are complemented by unique learning centers.

A cooking class at the Omega Institute.

While the school district may be small, it offers a high-quality experience for students and families. Students at every level have diverse study and extracurricular options. At Chancellor Livingston Elementary, the district’s partnership with villages and schools in Madagascar has provided rich opportunities for learning, arts, and cultural awareness, both for students and the wider community. Academically, the district ranks well, even in the new Common Core tests. In 2014, for the seventh year in a row, Rhinebeck High School was named to Newsweek’s best American high schools list with a ranking of 13th out of the 53 identified in New York State. With less than 400 students, the high school focuses on individualized learning and setting students up for success after graduation; it offers 10 Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The district is also known for its 12 competitive sports teams, including the boys varsity soccer team, which won the 2014 state championship. Rhinebeck also offers many opportunities for children with special needs, including Astor Services for Children and Families, a nonprofit whose residential program is based in Rhinebeck and which offers many day programs as well. The Anderson Center for Autism, New York’s premier autism treatment center, is several minutes south and offers both center- and community-based services. Camp Ramapo’s renowned summer

camp for special needs children also has yearround programming for educators and students. There are many excellent nursery schools and daycares in the area that offer full and half-day enrollment, including Montessori and faith-based options. The newest addition is Primrose Hill School, inspired by Waldorf educational philosophy and currently offering first to fourth grade enrollment. It is set on 9.5 acres just outside the Village of Rhinebeck and includes a working farm. The Rhinebeck area is known for its proximity to several nationally recognized colleges as well, including Bard College in neighboring Red Hook; Vassar College, Marist College, and Dutchess Community College; are all just a short drive south in Poughkeepsie. The Culinary Institute of America is also nearby in Hyde Park. These institutions do more than provide a good local option for secondary education; they provide excellent give-back opportunities to the community, including numerous arts and cultural events, fresh chefs for local restaurant kitchens, able volunteers for community programs, and more. Finally, there are institutions that cater to specialized learning and continued education, the kind only a place like Rhinebeck could nurture, such as the Southlands Foundation and its wellknown horsemanship school. The Omega Institute for Holistic Education offers continuing education and retreats at its beautiful lakeside campus with the goal of “awakening the human spirit.” rhinebeckchamber.com
