2 Pure Catskills 2011-2012 Guide

BUY FRESH. BUY LOCAL. About us Pure Catskills is a buy local campaign that promotes farm and food businesses in the Catskill Region. Our goal is to increase support of the local food system. This guide is created in collaboration with farmers and purveyors of fresh food across Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster Counties. When farms thrive, our communities benefit in many ways. Why buy local food? IT TASTES BETTER. Food that is grown closer to home is fresher and tastes better. It is better for you. Fresher food has more nutritional value. It creates accountability. Farmers take responsibility for food that they sell directly to consumers who in turn know and trust the source of their food. It supports the local economy. Buying from local farmers ensures that rural farming communities survive.

About our logo Developed from the 1940s era label of the Walton-Hamden Cauliflower Grower’s Cooperative, the Pure Catskills logo is a celebration of our regional heritage. From the 1920s to the 1940s, local cauliflower was shipped in huge quantities via rail and highway to ready metropolitan markets, making the Catskills synonymous with fine quality produce. The image of the logo exemplifies the long tradition of quality products from a working landscape here in the Catskill Region. For more information Visit us online at www.buypurecatskills.com and join our e-mail newsletter list, view extended member listings, find the latest calendar dates, news clippings, maps and sign up for next year’s guide. Direct questions about Pure Catskills to Challey Comer by e-mail at ccomer@nycwatershed.org or by phone at (607) 865-7090, ext. 217.

It protects the environment. Well-managed farms must maintain ecosystems that plants, animals and humans inhabit.

• Support for this project comes from Pure Catskills members and the Watershed Agricultural Council.

It preserves the working landscape. The sustainability of farming prevents unwanted and excessive development.

• Pure Catskills is an economic initiative of the Watershed Agricultural Council. The Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the economic viability of agriculture and forestry through the protection of water quality and the promotion of land conservation in the New York City watershed region. The Council is funded by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other public, foundation, and private sources.

It is part of our culture. Losing our farmers would compromise an essential part of our cultural heritage. It is an investment in the future. This year, our agricultural imports exceeded the value of our exports. A safe food system supports local farmers so that we can feed ourselves for generations to come.

Welcome to the 2011–2012 Pure Catskills Guide to Farm Fresh Products!

TABLE OF CONTENTS

F

or eight years, the Pure Catskills guide has served as a dependable source for connecting with our region’s local food businesses. The Pure Catskills Buy Local Campaign has expanded each year with new members and new activities aimed at spreading the word on Catskills agriculture. Navigate the guide by looking up businesses by name, by using the product index to find specific foods, or by locating nearby businesses on the members map. A number of short features in this year’s guide add another means of finding relevant information by highlighting recent trends happening in our local food community. This print publication is at the core of the work of the Farm to Market Program at the Watershed Agricultural Council, but our work extends beyond these pages. In addition to the promotional efforts of the Pure Catskills campaign, we organize educational events for our business members, facilitate connections between buyers and growers, and invest directly in enhanced local food production through our annual grant program. Stay connected with us online at www.buypurecatskills.com for ongoing announcements of seasonal events, news from our business members, and updates on agricultural economic development. BEGINNING FARMER PHOTOGRAPHY Images in this year’s guide feature beginning farmers, those who by definition have been farming independently for ten years or less. Included in these portraits are growers who transitioned to farming mid-career, have come up through on-farm apprentice experiences, or are children of farmers making their own mark on the family business. The ingenuity of new growers drives the local food movement in many ways and we are pleased to emphasize their importance. Noted Ulster County photographer Jennifer May shot the farmers featured on location this spring. View more of Jennifer’s work at www.jennifermay.com. KARIN URSULA LANDSCAPES I believe that beauty sustains the soul and food sustains the body. Landscapes are able to offer both. Since 2007, I design, install and maintain residential and commercial landscapes. Recognizing that plants are conscious living beings, I partner with Nature through organic gardening methods, predominantly native plants and employing plants for attracting beneficial insects and repelling critters. This year, I started in-house propagation of herbs, edibles and flowers for a client’s organic vegetable garden. —Karin Edmondson

You Can Protect Farmland, Forests and Clean Water

All farms and forest lands located within the New York City Watershed have an impact on water quality. If you own land in the New York City Water Supply Region: Catskill/Delaware Watershed – a 1,597-square-mile area that includes six reservoirs in Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster counties – and the Croton Watershed – a 375-square mile area across New York’s Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties and Fairfield County, Connecticut, you may be eligible for one of our programs. By using a tailored land management plan on your property, you can help guarantee the high-quality water standards of the New York City drinking water supply. As a landowner, you can: • Plant trees and riparian shrubs to prevent streambank erosion. • Enlist our technical expertise in pasture, cropland and manure management. • Protect water quality by initiating land stewardship on your property. • Qualify for financial assistance to implement conservation practices. • Learn to address the many threats to your forest including deer overpopulation and invasive species. • Promote biodiversity and healthy woodlands through a financially assisted Forest Management Plan.

But you can’t do it alone... Let’s do it together. Call us to find out what you can do to protect our water, farm and forest resources. (607) 865-7790 Catskill/Delaware Watershed (914) 962-6355 Croton Watershed
