At Literary Arts, we seek to foster a lifelong love of literature, as well as to strengthen our community of artists who make it. Together with our staff, volunteers, partners, and donors, Literary Arts served more than 20,000 Oregonians last year. Readers engaged in rich literary experiences at the concert hall, in our community space, and on the radio. Students were inspired by teaching artists, visiting authors, and volunteer mentors. Local writers received support through grants, awards, and residencies.

WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR The stories we tell about ourselves define who we are. The stories we read or listen to help to define our worldview. When people are given the time and the resources to tell their own stories, they are empowered. When they are given an audience, we strengthen our community through shared experience. Tens of thousands of people take part in our programming each year. They are of all ages and come from all over the state. Their large numbers remind us that we live in a place in which literature makes a difference every day. It deepens our understanding of the world and the people around us—not just locally, but with people from all over the country and the globe. At a time of great—and sometimes dangerous— upheaval, our goal is to build a stronger community with the power of literature. Literary Arts has important work before us. EACH YEAR, THE PROGRAMS OF LITERARY ARTS INSPIRE MORE THAN 20,000 OREGONIANS. Over the past five years, we have expanded the breadth of our programming to better serve a wider and more diverse audience. We build community around literature, books, and storytelling, and the essential ideas and issues they raise. Our programs are designed to work together, creating a crossroads for readers and writers of all ages both locally and nationally. The range of our programs offers a multitude of access points—from intimate @LiteraryArts events to large concert halls, and from highly participatory classes and workshops to online content that is available anywhere.

Literary Arts brought some of the world’s most celebrated authors to engage with our local community. Our season of events featured more than 200 authors whose lectures, readings, and discussions inspired more than 20,000 readers of all ages.
PORTLAND ARTS & LECTURES In addition to presenting to a sold-out audience at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, our visiting authors engaged with local writers and students in the community. For example, award-winning writer Louise Erdrich, an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, visited the Native American Youth and Family Center. Erdrich spoke with students, teachers, and elders about her vision, writing process, and novels, many of which explore themes of justice.

WORDSTOCK: PORTLAND’S BOOK FESTIVAL Wordstock: Portland’s Book Festival expanded to include six new partner venues, doubling the seating capacity. The author lineup featured a mix of more than 175 local and national writers such as Sherman Alexie, P.C. Cast, Alice Hoffman, Margaret Malone, Anders Nilsen, Gina Ochsner, Richard Russo, Solmaz Sharif, Colson Whitehead, and Kevin Young.

THE ARCHIVE PROJECT During our third season of The Archive Project, we expanded our content to include other facets of our programming, including the Verselandia! City-wide Youth Poetry Slam and the reading series Liars’ League PDX. Listenership doubled over the past year, including our online audience and podcast subscribers on iTunes.

EVERYBODY READS 2017 In March, Literary Arts hosted Pulitzer Prize–winning author and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, for the culminating event of Multnomah County Library’s Everybody Reads. Desmond presented a lecture on homelessness and the housing crisis to an audience of over 2,000, and visited with students at Gresham and Franklin high schools.

DELVE READERS SEMINARS Each year, we continue to experiment with the subject matter and format of our Delve Readers Seminars to engage a community of passionate readers and seminar guides. This year, we hosted 19 seminars where students read powerful books that inspired lively conversations on important social topics. In September, Béalleka guided a seminar that discussed Toni Morrison’s Beloved and contemporary representations of slavery with an intimate group of eight participants.

SUPPORT WRITERS
Literary Arts connects with hundreds of local writers and publishers throughout the year. We celebrate and recognize the remarkable work being created right here in our community through awards and fellowships. We also hire writers to teach classes, and we partner with artists and organizations to host free events in our space and in the community.
OREGON BOOK AWARDS In January, 32 writers were announced as the 2017 Oregon Book Awards finalists. An audience of more than 500 came to cheer on local authors during the live annual Oregon Book Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2017.

OREGON LITERARY FELLOWSHIPS Out-of-state judges selected this year’s diverse group of 11 recipients from more than 450 applicants. In 2017, for the second year, Literary Arts awarded a Fellowship for Writers of Color. Our goal is to represent the diversity of our growing community and to give a voice to those who have historically been excluded.

WRITING CLASSES Students from all levels of experience and backgrounds came to our classes this year to start their memoirs, finish their novels, revise their poems, and join a community of inspired writers. Many of our instructors are Oregon Book Awards authors and Literary Fellowship recipients, and all of them are experienced teachers. Earned income from the classes contributes to the sustainability of our awards program.

OREGON BOOK AWARDS AUTHOR TOUR Nine Oregon Book Awards authors participated in this year’s tour and visited public high schools, libraries, community centers, and theaters across Oregon. Events included readings, free workshops, classroom visits, and a staged reading of Ithaka, an Oregon Book Award-winning play by Andrea Stolowitz.

Our community center downtown is not only a space to showcase the work and talent of local and national organizations, but a chance for our partners to program the types of activities they want to see offered. @LiteraryArts events are open to the public and are free or low-cost. Our Youth Programs inspired more than 4,000 students with a variety of literary opportunities in the classroom and concert hall. By bringing professional writers and awardwinning national authors to local high schools, we offer students first-hand experiences that underscore the role literature can play in their lives.
WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS RESIDENCIES Writers in the Schools 2015-2016 Student Anthology
In 2015-16, WITS placed 25 local, professional writers in 43 classrooms at Portland public high schools and alternative programs. These writers worked with 1,101 students who wrote, revised, edited, and performed their own creative writing. This anthology is a showcase of their poems, fiction, creative nonfiction, and comics.
WITS is a program of Literary Arts, a statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature. The core of the Youth Programs of Literary Arts is Writers in the Schools (WITS) a program of semester-long residencies taught by local professional poets, graphic novelists, and fiction and nonfiction writers who model and share their disciplined creative writing practices with high school students. STUDENT READINGS Sharing work with friends, family, and community members helps students grow as writers. Students shared their poems, prose, and comics alongside teachers and WITS writers during 11 end-of-residency readings. Twelve students performed their work on stage at Wordstock: Portland’s Book festival.

COLLEGE ESSAY MENTORING PROJECT At Benson, Franklin, Madison, and Roosevelt high schools, we paired volunteer mentors with students working on their essays for college and scholarship applications. Over half of these students reported that they will be the first generation in their family to attend college.

AUTHOR VISITS AND STUDENTS TO THE SCHNITZ Hundreds of students engaged with seven award-winning authors in the concert hall and classrooms throughout the year. For example, in February, Irish writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colum McCann visited Madison High School. More than 100 students participated in a Q&A where he spoke about his philosophy of radical empathy.

VERSELANDIA! The annual Verselandia! City-wide Youth Poetry Slam found a new home at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, where students from 12 high schools performed original work in front of Verselandia!’s largest audience yet to compete for the grand slam title.
