A World Apart Taking pictures for me was never just a representation of reality. I’ve always tried to look for the unknown, the surreal side of things. Looking through my photos, a moment of truth would sometimes reveal itself, that element of surprise that would intrigue me. When I started taking photographs underwater it was a revelation for me. That element of surprise was greatly magnified because everything was different in the water; the light and what it did, people were free in their movements and spirits and I was able to see things from unlimited perspectives. People leave their cares on land and jump into the water freeing themselves to become uninhibited. Photographing completely inside nature influenced my pictures in a way I never dreamed possible.

MÊcanisme de l’Oubli For 16 years, I have been living with my family in a house located in the countryside, not that far from Paris. When I started that series I was aware that the countdown had started and that we would have to leave the place within a few years, not knowing exactly when and where to go. I knew already the sadness of departures, something I experienced previously in my childhood and once again I was in front of an emptiness that I had to fill. Those photographs, made with a pinhole camera, were exactly what I needed to keep records of those familiar places. They matched exactly with that feeling of leaving something I had loved a lot for something else that was totally unknown. Nothing to hang my desire on and again that feeling of loss in which I sank. Today we still live in this house. Nothing has changed really. We still know we will have to move and build something else, somewhere else. But now, I know that part of the links I have with that place no longer exists.
