Spring 2011 HISTORY

Spring 2011 Leiden University Press presents its second catalogue of scholarly books and e-books. As a proponent of Open Access publishing, LUP is an active participant in various projects that stimulate the open dissemination of high-quality scholarly publications, both digitally and in print. We are proud to add two new titles to our Iranian Studies series. Archaeological research is well represented with three new titles. The fourth volume in our Mauritiana series is an historical survey of the 17th century Brazilian-Dutch Archives. Amongst the new voices, Bending Opinion: Essays on Persuasion in the Public Domain, which discusses speeches by Tony Blair and Geert Wilders. Violets and Cherry Blossoms is the first elaborate comparative study of motifs in the arts of western antiquity traveling as far as Japan. “Not a book that can be ignored”, according to John Boardman. Rudy Andeweg and Jacques Thomassen offer a unique assessment of Dutch democracy in the first ever Dutch Democratic Audit, both in an eloquent introduction, Afspiegelen of afrekenen, and in a detailed analysis, Democratie Doorgelicht, collecting the views of a wide selection of Dutch political scientists. We also present a new method of studying Classical Chinese, From Oracle Bone to Weblog, which has been applauded by Harvard professor Wilt Idema (“Indispensable for every lover of Chinese culture”), plus Levende Beelden [Living Statues], revealing a new field in art history by studying how artworks seduce their beholders; an intriguing study for any art lover. Does Dutch democracy still function? Many committed citizens are greatly concerned about - governmental integrity, and the gap between the electorate and the elected - t he raisons d’être of the many political parties - elections without true alternatives, and the way populism, media and the public debate seem to be mutually dependant? - t he drift of authority towards Brussels, and the lack of ways of monitoring that drift Democratie doorgelicht and Van Afspiegelen naar Afrekenen? is a essential contribution to the debate about the Dutch democracy in the 21st century. The books can be ordered together or separately. Editors: Prof. Rudy Andeweg is professor of empirical political science at Leiden University Prof. Jacques Thomassen is professor of political science at the University of Twente

In Democratie doorgelicht, political and social scientists from Dutch universities combine their knowledge and research results to measure the Dutch political establishment by their democratic yardstick. Free from personal political preferences, without the finger raised in warning, and without needless technical jargon, they offer a straightforward analysis of 9 the significant aspects of our democracy in this first democratic 9 audit.

Democratie doorgelicht Het functioneren van de Nederlandse democratie

In Van Afspiegelen naar Afrekenen? Rudy Andeweg and Jacques Thomassen reflect in a particularly accessible style on questions that worry so many Dutch people. How well does our democracy actually function? How great are the problems and what is the most pressing concern? What are the greatest problems to be solved in our current political landscape?

Thomas de Bruijn

The Ruby in the Dust Poetry and History of the Padmāvat by the Indian Sufi Poet Muhammad Jāyasī The Padmāvat (1540 CE) by the Indian Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jāyasī is a classic of pre-modern Indian literature. It relates how the Rajput king Ratansen of Chitor finds and marries the beautiful princess Padmāvati, and how the sultan Alauddin Khilji, on hearing of her beauty, besieges Chitor in a fruitless attempt to capture her. The Ruby in the Dust presents a reading of Padmāvat that challenges existing interpretations of Jāyasī’s work and describes how its semantic polyphony reflects the poet’s role as mediator between his spiritual and worldly patrons. The perspective Publishing date May 2011 Language English NUR 635

of De Bruijn’s reading corrects the identification with modern, nationalist notions of Hindu and Muslim identity that have dominated interpretations of this work until now, revealing a confluence of poetry and history that inspired the many retellings of the tale of Padmāvati in Persian and other Indian languages made until the present day. Dr. Thomas de Bruijn is a specialist in early and modern South Asian literature. He was a fellow at International Institute for Asian Studies and taught at INALCO, Paris

Bending opinion Essays on persuasion in the public domain Rhetoric is, from both a practical and a theoretical perspective, essential to the conduct, analysis and evaluation of public debates. After all, the idea of Democracy is closely intertwined with the ideal of transparent decision-making on the basis of open high-quality discussions in the public domain. From classical antiquity till the present time, methods of organizing and conducting public debate and decision-making by which public speakers can effectively construe their message to persuade or to bend opinions of others have been hotly contested. Bending opinion: Essays on persuasion in the public domain is a collection of essays by distinguished international scholars that presents an overview of the state of interdisciplinary scholarship on the art of rhetoric and the varied approaches and methodologies within it, illustrated with relevant examples and compelling case studies.

Levende beelden Kunst werken en kijken Throughout the ages, and all over the world people have treated works of art as if they were living beings. This has until recently been dismissed as idolatry or fetishism. In Levende beelden we meet viewers from ancient Greece who tried to sleep with Praxiteles’ statue of Aphrodite and a Venetian aristocrat who spoke daily to the portrait of his beloved. In each case, the authors reconstruct how viewers and contemporaries made sense of these reactions, and draw on present-day insights from

Violets between Cherry Blossoms The Diffusion of Classical Motifs to the East: Traces in Japanese Art Violets between Cherry Blossoms is a unique comparative overview of motifs and images from Greece to Japan, exploring cultural flows into the Mediterranean and the Black Sea from the earliest days, Alexander the Great, Greek culture in the Roman Empire, the Silk Road and the spread of Buddhism to China and Japan. Researcher Pieter Arts feels that the geographical expansion was part of a greater adoption and assimilation of cultures across enormous distances. The second part of the study follows the cultural flow of specific gods, heroes, airborne deities and monsters from Greece to Japan.

“This is not a book that can be ignored by any lover of the history of art and significance of images, both for its lavish illustration and its message. The gods, goddesses, heroes and monsters of ancient Greece enjoyed a longer life and wider familiarity than even an ancient Greek could have imagined.” Prof. Sir John Boardman, Beazley Archive, Oxford Dr. P.L.W. Arts has published on Japanese, Greek and Roman art and history, and now focusses on connections between these cultures

Vangelis Tourloukis

The Early and Middle Pleistocene Archaeological Record of Greece Current status and future prospects Choosing the scanty Greek record as a case-study, Tourloukis elaborates on a hitherto largely overlooked subject in the Eurasian Early-Middle Pleistocene archaeology: the role of geomorphic processes in biasing archaeological distribution patterns of early human presence.

By applying a fieldwork-based, geoarchaeological approach, Tourloukis examines in this study the evidence from Greece within the framework of the earliest occupation of Europe. This study identifies the current status of the record, explains that status from a geoarchaeological and geomorphological perspective, and examines the prospects of its future enrichment.

This volume of ASLU presents an approach to Frankish castles with the space syntax, a method and theory that aims to study the relationship people have with built space. Employing space syntax on crusader castles brought new insights into the functioning of the fortress both in the social structure and behaviour of the inhabitants of the castles.

Cleveringa’s koffer Recht, vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid: Een selectie uit de 26 novemberredes aan de Universiteit Leiden 1940 - 2010 On 26 November 1940, on what became a prominent date in Dutch history, the Leiden professor R.P. Cleveringa had his suitcase already packed in the likely case that he would be arrested for addressing a protest against the suspension of his Jewish colleagues at the University. Cleveringa’s koffer [Cleveringa’s Suitcase] opens with his original speech from 1940. He was indeed arrested only days later and Leiden University was closed down; his lecture became a symbol of university resistance for the past 70 years. This edited volume compiles nineteen of the annual 26 November Speeches by significant international figures. Cleveringa’s koffer touches on the importance of

9 Many arguments have been made for the moral relevance of reading capacity. In this study Jan-Jaap van Peperstraten focuses on the most viable of these: the notion of a ‘Literary Intelligence’ as formulated by the English literary critic F.R. Leavis and his students. It is argued that Literary Intelligence is best conceptualized as a form of intellectual virtue: an acquired, intrinsically good, cognitive mental trait. Particular recourse is taken to the virtueethical work of Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski and it is concluded that the fostering of a reading praxis may lead to the cultivation of the intellectual virtue of phronesis – or practical wisdom.

Jan-Jaap van Peperstraten (1978) is a graduate of the universities of Nijmegen and Utrecht, both in the Netherlands. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education by the University of the West of Scotland in 2010.
