Pieta van Beek and Annemarié van Niekerk

My Mother’s Mother’s Mother South African Women’s Writing from 17th-Century Dutch to Contemporary Afrikaans The first of its kind, this volume collects more than seventy South African women’s voices, from 1652 until today. We share the joys and sorrows of these women through their entertaining, sometimes disturbing texts. A testament to a significant segment of the linguistic and cultural history of the country, they speak in Dutch, then in different varieties of Afrikaans. The printing press arrived late at the Cape, and when it finally did, it took another century before the first publications by women appeared. Initially their writing bore a strong biblical influence, but gradually, as women began to have access to better educational opportunities, they began to produce literature of world stature in Afrikaans. Through this literature, we can see women’s perspectives on the tumultuous history of South Africa from colonisation to democracy as it unfolded. Pieta van Beek is a research fellow at the Universities of Utrecht and Stellenbosch. She has published extensively on forgotten Dutch-Afrikaans women writers of South Africa, as well as on the Dutch learned woman Anna Maria van Schurman, the first female university student. Annemarié van Niekerk was a university lecturer and literary critic in South Africa before moving to the Netherlands. Currently she is book reviewer for the Dutch newspaper Trouw and writes a column for the Belgian sociocultural magazine Streven.

Timeous. Important. Courageous, as it executes a double rescue operation. Speaking in sister languages, the voices of foremothers and their daughters who never dreamt themselves to be connected, are hereby for the very first time brought into conversation across generations, race and class. And then, in an imaginative political act, they are all translated into English to be finally set free to breathe within the broader discourses of female writing. – Antjie Krog, South African poet, academic, and writer.

Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak

A Fire of Lilies Perspectives on Literature and Politics in Modern Iran This book examines the role of Persian literature in politics in the tumultuous period of Iranian history from 1950 to 2000, illustrating how intellectuals used poetry, plays, novels and short stories to comment on socio-political developments. The unique aspect of the book is its strong empirical perspective, as Karimi-Hakkak has participated in the events he is writing about. It analyses how Persian intellectuals dealt with censorship, suppression, imprisonment, exile and even execution for the sake of expression of free speech.

Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of modern Persian literature, and using a contemplative and an extremely eloquent language, Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak captures the mood of different time-periods of contemporary Iranian history by analyzing a wide range of literary events – topics, personalities, encounters – which travel across a variety of disciplines. A Fire of Lilies is a significant contribution to the field of Persian studies, and it is indeed a very pleasant read. – M.M. Khorrami, Professor Emeritus of Persian Language and Literature, New York University.

Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak’s wide-ranging and original collection of essays is an essential reading for any student or scholar of Persian literature and culture. The author’s profound knowledge of Iran’s modernist literature and his innovative approach to rethink the relationship of literature and politics challenge some of the current assumptions and misunderstandings about this massively underexplored area of research. Through a remarkably rich examination of history, politics and literature, Karimi-Hakkak explores some of the most important yet underexplored shifting points in the history of Modern Persian literature.

Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak is a professor of Persian at the UCLA Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. He is also the founding director of the Roshan Center for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland.

Florian Schneider

Staging China The Politics of Mass Spectacle The People’s Republic of China began the 21st century with a new-and-improved public relations approach that was meant to counter anxieties about China’s role in the world while simultaneously showcasing the leadership’s policies to a domestic audience. Crucial to this communication strategy have been networked spectacles: elaborate mass event, designed to reconfigure organisations, ideas, and the relations between people. In Staging China, Florian Schneider analyses large-scale projects like the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo to show how such spectacles became part of the ruling party’s governance toolkit under Hu Jintao’s leadership, and how their legacy informs politics and political communication in China to this day. Florian Schneider is Senior University Lecturer in the Politics of Modern China at Leiden University. He is managing editor of the academic journal Asiascape: Digital Asia and author of China’s Digital Nationalism (Oxford University Press 2018) and Visual Political Communication in Popular Chinese Television Series (Brill 2013).

This is a timely, original, and relevant work with fine-grained yet essential nuances [on the] emerging, complicated repertoire used by the Communist Party of China to govern the world’s largest authoritarian regime. The author advances a theoretical frame for depicting the networked interactions and communications within the Communist Chinese state and its people. – Jun Liu, associate professor of Media, Cognition and Communication, University of Copenhagen.

Dorrit van Dalen

Gum Arabic

DORRIT VAN DALEN

The Golden Tears of the Acacia Tree Gum Arabic is a natural product which grows exclusively in the Sahel and has played an ever increasing role in the global economy. In the time of the crusades, Europeans bought the ingredient in Arab countries. Soon, it was not only used in ink or medicine, but also as a symbol of its putative Arab origin, the noble Orient. Later, gum was bought directly in the countries where it was produced, but western dependence on it grew. As European countries were laying the foundations for their colonial empires, their relations with the suppliers of gum contradicted their views of the world. Gum Arabic now stood for trouble. In her search for the meanings of gum Arabic, van Dalen takes the reader from Shakespeare to Bin Laden, from the Industrial Revolution to a veteran of a recent coup d’etat in Chad. In a fluent, at times elegantly written account, bursting with anecdotes, Van Dalen leaves no element of her subject untouched. Full of life and local colour…. – Trouw ... contagious enthusiasm…. Her book is so easy to digest that you are instilled with a desire to learn even more about how the continents of our modern-day world are linked together.

The Colonization of Freed African Americans in Suriname Archival Sources relating to the U.S.-Dutch Negotiations, 1860-1866 During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln’s administration engaged in protracted negotiations with representatives of the Netherlands to aid in the voluntarily colonization of free African Americans to Suriname. Scores of diplomatic letters in Dutch, English, and French, dating to the period 1862 to 1866 attest to the very real possibility that such migration stream could have become a reality. They also indicate reasons why this scheme failed: it was bogged down by differences of opinion, mail delays, and ultimately a reluctance of any African Americans to migrate. Previously unpublished and unknown, these letters have been transcribed and translated here for the first time. The sources provide a rare look inside the minds of liberal government officials during the age of emancipation in the Atlantic World. They demonstrate the officials’ humanitarian concerns, their racial prejudices, respect for legal order and process, and faith in governments to solve international problems. The Age of Abolition was a period when colonial empires were desperate to continue the supply of labour to growing plantation industries. It was also a period when former slaves began to assert their rights as citizens. This collection of sources give insight into how entrepreneurs and state officials engaged in international relations to solve the challenges of their time. The collection is also a reminder that avenues not taken — the migration of free Afro-Americans to Suriname — are crucial to understanding the history of this period. – Karwan Fatah-Black, university lecturer at the Institute for History, Leiden University.

This collection of sources is a very welcome addition to Surinamese and Caribbean historiography. The negotiations between the Netherlands and the United States shed light on an understudied topic; it is surprising how little we know about these crucial years of abolition beyond the actual abolition of slavery and the remuneration of the owners. The topic plus the translations into English make this publication a valuable contribution to pan-Caribbean history as it will help students and scholars to look beyond the borders of empire and will invite connecting perspectives on colonization plans for and by formerly enslaved African Americans. What make these papers even more interesting is that the abolition processes in the USA and Suriname coincided. In short, I strongly support the publication of these sources as they will invite further cross-Caribbean historical studies. – Rosemarijn Hoefte, professor in the history of Suriname after 1873 in comparative perspective at the University of Amsterdam and President of the Association of Caribbean Historians.

D.L. Noorlander

Heaven’s Wrath The Protestant Reformation and Dutch West India Company in the Atlantic World How did Reformed Christianity, the public faith of the Netherlands, influence the Dutch experience abroad? How did the Reformed Church and the West India Company (WIC) interact in each setting? What effect did the major religious issues and divisions of the period have on the WIC and its directors, merchants, employees, settlers, and indigenous allies? Conversely, what effect did expansion have on Dutch Calvinism? In answering these and other questions, D. L. Noorlander argues against prevailing understandings of the role of religion in the Dutch colonial enterprise, finding that the Dutch Reformed Church was integral to Dutch colonialism. The stereotype of the Dutch merchant is a man unconcerned with differences in theological doctrine and political ideology so long as business was brisk. Although this has some merit in the history of New Amsterdam, the broader colonial effort in the Atlantic and, indeed, around the globe was far more closely connected to religious institutions, doctrine, authority, and practice. So whereas the easy answer regarding the failure of the Dutch to set up a durable empire in North America supposes a causal connection between dominant commercial interest and the lack of concern for the settlements and religious missions that animated other European colonization efforts, Noorlander shows that one needs to look elsewhere for the causes of that failure. In so doing, he revises some core notions about the organization and aims of Dutch empire, the culture of the West India Company, and the very shape of Dutch society. Co-publication with Cornell University Press. For distribution in the Netherlands and Belgium only.

D. L. Noorlander is assistant professor of history at the State University of New York, Oneonta. He is coeditor of the journal New York History.

This is an impressive, ambitious study that will change the conversation about religion, trade, and imperial expansion in the case of the Dutch. Heaven's Wrath exceeds all other work on the topic. — Evan Haefeli, associate professor at the department of history at Texas A&M University.

NEW SERIES Petra Groen (ed.)

The Eighty Years War From Revolt to Regular War, 1568-1648 The military factors underlying the division of the Low Countries and the creation of the Dutch Republic are described in this book. The birth of the new state was to no small degree determined by the balance of military power on land and at sea. That in the north the provincial States and the Calvinists gained the upper hand and in the south the Spanish rulers and the Catholic Church, was the result of eighty years of warfare. It was also something that no-one had foreseen in 1568. From the outset the conflict between the Dutch insurgents and their Spanish sovereign lord captured the imagination. Against all expectations, Philip II and his successors failed to win a conclusive victory over their rebellious Dutch subjects. In 1648 the mightiest European power of the sixteenth century, the Spanish empire, was compelled to admit defeat at the negotiating table in Münster and recognise the breakaway Dutch provinces as a sovereign state. Published in co-operation with the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH)

The authors, Petra Groen, Olaf van Nimwegen, Ronald Prud’homme van Reine, Louis Sicking and Adri van Vliet, are all specialists in maritime and military history. Translated from Dutch by Andy Brown, Helen Bannatyne and Annette Mills

Caroll I. Davila

Weneya´a – “Quien Habla con los Cerros” Memoria, mántica y paisaje sagrado en la Sierra Norte de Oaxaca This work documents the Saa (Zapotec) cultural heritage of the Bene’ Ya'a/En'ne I'ya, the Zapotec inhabitants of the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. The book is the result of a close collaboration with the peoples of those communities. In the Dilla Xhon variant (Cajonos Zapotec), the ritual experts are called Weneya’a which means "the one who speaks with the mountains”. The Weneya'a give meaning to the cultural heritage of their communities such as healing practices, illnesses, life and death, all of this in accordance with their sacred landscape. Despite centuries of profound changes, their knowledge has been passed on through the generations from prehispanic times onwards. The heritage of the communities is studied by using two major perspectives: the symbols transmitted by the Weneya'a during their mantic interpretations and ritual discourses together with the meaning of the sacred landscape in cultural memory.

Caroll Davila obtained her PhD in 2019 at Leiden University and the Université Libre de Bruxelles and is currently a collaborative researcher at both universities. She is also associated to the CIESAS in Oaxaca.

Mark A. Locicero

Liquid Footprints Water, Urbanism, and Sustainability in Roman Ostia This publication examines the archaeological evidence from three city blocks in Ostia, focusing on elements of the water systems identified by past excavations and within unpublished archival material. Inspired by the diversity of research approaches currently used to assess the sustainability of water in contemporary cities, this study presents the Roman Water Footprint, which diachronically assesses changes to all parts of a hydraulic system (supply, usage, drainage). At the same time, the Roman Water Footprint calculates socio-cultural expressions of water usage, and uses paleo-environmental data to highlight the dynamic natural presence of water. The use of the Roman Water Footprint offers a new look at the wider context of ancient water systems and how they changed over time. This study opens a dialogue between first and twenty-first century successes and failures in our urban relationship with water.

Mark Locicero has taken part in several archaeological projects around the Mediterranean. He completed his doctoral studies in 2018 at Leiden University, where he researched the urban history of Ostia and its water system. His current research continues to explore diverse aspects of ancient Mediterranean water systems.

Scientific Integrity The Rules of Academic Research

Kees Schuyt

The growing attention for scientific integrity is part of a wider culture of professionalization and accountability − which appears to signal that integrity is no longer self-evident as a core value of professional conduct. Examples abound. But what is scientific integrity? Why does it matter? What are the issues, and what is at stake? What do we know about the nature and scope of violations of scientific integrity? In this book, Kees Schuyt explores the concept of integrity, describes various cases of fraud and other types of dishonest behaviour in research practice, and offers a reflective and pragmatic framework for handling transgressions against the rules of academic research. Drawing on a wide variety of historical examples, Schuyt looks into matters ranging from the codification of scientific integrity to the difference between misconduct, questionable practices, and honest errors, and the uses and abuses of the notion of plagiarism. Last but not least, he considers how the norms and values of academic research can best be transmitted to students and new generations of researchers.

Big Books in Times of Big Data This book explores the aesthetics, medial affordances, and cultural economics of monumental literary works of the present. Using a wide-ranging international archive of hefty tomes by authors such as Mark Z. Danielewski, Roberto Bolaño, Elena Ferrante, and Karl Ove Knausgård, George R.R. Martin, Jonathan Franzen, and William T. Vollmann, van de Ven recuperates multiple strands of bigness that speak to the tenuous position of print literature in the present but also to the robust stature of literary discourse within our age of proliferating digital media. Her study makes a case for the cultural agency of the big book—as a material object and a discursive phenomenon, entangled in complex ways with questions of canonicity, mediality, gender, and power. Van de Ven takes us into a contested bookish terrain beyond the 1,000-page mark, where issues of scale and readerly comprehension clash with authorial aggrandizement and the pleasures of binge reading and serial consumption. Inge van de Ven’s superb book explores the aesthetics, the medial affordances, and the cultural economics of monumental literary works in the present. […] Balancing careful close readings of such door-stop books as Danielewski’s The Familiar and Bolaño’s 2666 with wide-ranging discussions of big data epistemologies, media change, and evolving forms of literacy, Big Books in Times of Big Data is a perfect blend of comparative media studies and literary analysis. − Alexander Starre, assistant professor in American Studies, Freie Universität Berlin.

The study is very well written and seamlessly integrates readings of complex large-scale literary works with new theory across literary studies, feminism, digital and media studies. – Henriette Steiner, associate professor at the Section for Landscape Architecture and Planning, University of Copenhagen.
