Catalogue 2015

In this catalogue we are proud to present our new and forthcoming titles for 2015. In 1584 Christoffel Plantijn started as the official printer of Leiden University. At that time his workplace was next to the Academy Building, close to where the office of Leiden University Press (LUP) is now. In this setting our publishing house has been able to build up on a long-standing tradition of cooperation between the university and academic publication. In 1945 the imprint Leiden University Press was first established with the mission ‘to stimulate the publication of academic works that are of importance to Leiden University’. The original mission is reflected in our LUP Academic titles, as the works in the Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Book Culture series clearly confirm, as well as the books within our renowned Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies list. Within our more recent Leiden Publications imprint we additionally aim to publish books for a broader audience connected to Leiden in a wider sense: its university, the city and its numerous collections and museums.

Islam, Politics and Change The Indonesian Experience after the Fall of Suharto After violent protests across the country had forced President Suharto to step down in 1998, Indonesia successfully made the transition from an authoritarian state to a democracy. For the first time in forty years Islamic parties and organizations – including some inspired by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood – were free to propagate their ways of thinking. The new government also succeeded in negotiating an end to a separatist rebellion in Aceh, making the province the only region in Indonesia permitted to draft its own Islamic legislation. In this book Indonesian scholars affiliated with Islamic universities as well as Dutch researchers investigate what has happened since the transition. They explore what the consequences are of the growing influence of orthodoxy and radicalism, which – while already visible prior to 1998 – has only grown stronger. How did political and religious relations change? How were the lives of women and their legal position affected? Furthermore, what are the ramifications for religious minorities?

ISLAM, POLITICS AND CHANGE

This manuscript provides abundant new and insightful information on a diverse range of contemporary Islamic topics in Indonesia. […] I think this is a significant text which contributes considerably to scholarship on Indonesian Islam. − Greg Fealy, Associate Professor and Senior Fellow, Indonesian Politics, Australian National University, Canberra.

Edited by Maurits S. Berger

The work is a collection of very high-quality, detailed analyses of a set of key current conflicts and issues regarding Islam and politics in Indonesia, and is particularly strong with respect to two aspects: (1) the activities of the PKS party in Indonesia and (2) post-tsunami developments in Aceh. […] The wealth of local data make it stand out from other approaches more strictly focused on national politics. − John R Bowen, Dunbar-Van Cleve Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology, Washington University, St. Louis.

JIHAD AND ISLAM IN WORLD WAR I Studies on the Ottoman Jihad at the Centenary of Snouck Hurgronje’s “Holy War Made in Germany” Edited by Erik-Jan Zürcher

Recently the media have reverberated with references to Jihad and Jihadists. A hundred years ago, however, after the Ottoman Empire’s entry into World War I, the proclamation of Jihad by the Sultan-Caliph in Constantinople also made the headlines. This book investigates the background and nature of the Ottoman Jihad proclamation in addition to its effects in the wider Middle East - both among the Arabs and the Turks, and among Sunni Muslims as well as Shi’ites. It brings to light the German hopes for and British fears of a worldwide uprising of Muslims in the colonial empires at that time. This study scrutinises, moreover, the fierce academic debates caused by the Jihad proclamation, in which the 1915 manifesto of Leiden Islam scholar Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (“Holy War Made in Germany”) played a key role. Erik-Jan Zürcher has held the Turkish Studies chair at Leiden University since 1997. He specialises in the history of the late Ottoman Empire and Turkey, having written and edited twelve books on the subject. Since 2008 he has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Bringing together some of the leading scholars in the field, this volume provides the first comprehensive account of the jihad declaration of the First World War and its consequences. It reveals the remarkable impact the war had on Muslims around the world and, more generally, sheds new light on the geopolitics of Islam in the modern age. – Dr. David Motadel, Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge.

Terrorists on Trial A Performative Perspective Terrorism trials are an exceptional opportunity for better understanding and, hence, countering terrorism, since they are often the only place where most if not all of the actors of a terrorist incident meet again, and where the media report and broadcast their respective accounts. A nexus between terrorist violence, law enforcement and public opinion, terrorism trials showcase justice in progress and thus demonstrate to the world how terrorism suspects are treated under national law. This volume views terrorism trials as a form of theatre, where the “show” that a trial may offer can develop often disputable dynamics, which at times might inconvenience the government. Seeing terrorism trials as a stage where legal instruments are used (and abused) to argue the validity of contested political constructs, this study presents a performative perspective to draw attention to the mechanisms and effects of terrorism trials in and outside the courtroom. With special regard for how the power of these performances may in turn create new narratives of justice and/or injustice, it offers vital insights into terrorism trials directed against different types of terrorism suspects, from leftist to ethnic nationalist to jihadist terrorists, in Spain, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States.

The discourse of performativity is replete with rich insights. It proves in this book to be especially informative when applied by the accomplished contributors to the field of terrorist trials. The messages from symbolic special laws and legal theatres are thoroughly analysed within narratives of law, justice, and political studies. – Clive Walker, Professor of Criminal Justice Studies at the School of Law, University of Leeds.

The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies

The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies

Between 1966 and 1980, the War History Office of the National Defense College of Japan (now the Center for Military History of the National Institute for Defence Studies) published the 102-volume Senshi Sōsho (War History Series). These volumes give a detailed account of the operations of the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War.

Compiled by The War History Office of the National Defense College of Japan

Volume 3 of the series, The Invasion of the Dutch East Indies, describes in depth the campaign to gain control over the Indonesian archipelago – at that time the largest transoceanic landing operation in the military history of the world. The present book is the first complete and unabridged translation of a volume from the comprehensive Senshi Sōsho series. It enables military historians and the general public to see and study for the first time how the operation that put an end to Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia was planned and executed.

Caroline van Eck

Drawing on rhetoric, fetish theory, Aby Warburg and Alfred Gell, Art, Agency and Living Presence develops an historical account of this apparently irrational behaviour. Concentrating on the period from 1700 to 1900 and reactions to sculpture, it shows how the vivid lifelikenss of art works, their agency or excessive character, and the psychological conditioning of viewers, all contribute to make spectators forget they deal with images and transgress the boundaries between inanimate matter and living beings.

Rewriting Modernism Three Women Artists in Twentieth-Century China: Pan Yuliang, Nie Ou and Yin Xiuzhen This study offers a fresh, alternative reading of modernism from the perspective of three women artists – Pan Yuliang, Nie Ou and Yin Xiuzhen – who were professionally active at different political stages of twentiethcentury China. Through empirical micro- and macrohistories, the research undertaken investigates the ways in which these women have negotiated their identities in circumstances that have made their positions distinct, that is, being women artists as well as living in modern China. Providing relevant narratives and historical events, this book seeks to understand how the conventional perception of gender in Chinese society can be shown to be at work in the visual arts. Its juxtaposition of artists of different generations thus constitutes a deliberate attempt to create new opportunities for comparative studies of female artists in China, and to produce a dynamic reading of modern Chinese art from a different perspective.

Tiempo y Comunidad Herencias e Interacciones Socioculturales en Mesoamérica y Occidente The existence of communities and peoples develops over time, in a diachronic line of heritage and cultural memory as well as in a synchronous coexistence with the cosmos, marked by cyclically returning rituals. Under the pressure of “clock time” (“time is money”) these organic “other times” of identity are eroding rapidly. In these respects, modernity has come to be characterized by a deep, dramatic and often violent conflict between traditional values of societies that have their own cultures and the processes of colonization, urbanization and industrialization, which are usually presented as “progress”. This volume brings together complementary reflections of archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, sociologists and social activists on this issue. Central to their work is the perception and representation of time, its different symbolic aspects and its social impact. Espousing a comparatist methodology, the case studies focus on Mexico and Guatemala and on southern Italy.

Maarten Jansen is Professor of Mesoamerican archaeology and history at Leiden University. His focus is on the heritage of indigenous people.

Valentina Raffa is Researcher of Sociology at the University of Messina, focusing on social exclusion, postcolonial approaches to development and sociology of health.

Mirrors of Entrapment and Emancipation Forugh Farrokhzad and Sylvia Plath Mirrors of Entrapment and Emancipation explores the rich diversity of the meanings associated with the mirror and reflection in literature by women on the basis of the works of the Persian Forugh Farrokhzad (1935-1967) and her American contemporary Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). These two poets astutely employed mirror images for the realization as well as for communication of their turbulent psycho-emotional states to their readers, thereby capturing and conveying the essence of women desperately trapped among the antithetical images of twentieth-century womanhood. Leila Rahimi Bahmany completed her PhD at the Freie Universität Berlin.

LITERATURE

Through a combination of close textual analysis and insightful historical surveys Mirrors of Entrapment and Emancipation casts substantial new light on some essential dynamics governing the works of two remarkable woman poets of the mid-twentieth century, one an Iranian, the other an American. The result is a quantum leap in our understanding of the works of Sylvia Plath and Forugh Farrokhzad. − Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, Professor of Persian Language, Literature, and Culture, University of Maryland.

The western cliché about Persian poetry is that it deals with roses, nightingales, wine, hyperbolic love-longing, an awareness of the transience of our existence, and a delicate appreciation of life’s fleeting pleasures. And so a great deal of it does. But there is another side to Persian verse, one that is satirical, sardonic, often obscene, one that delights in ad hominem invective and no-holds barred diatribes. Perhaps surprisingly enough for the uninitiated reader it is frequently the same poets who write both kinds of verse. Riccardo Zipoli’s Irreverent Persia is a splendidly comprehensive introduction to this fascinating and hitherto virtually ignored side of the Persian literary canon, providing a wealth of examples of the varieties of the genre in accurate and felicitous translations. − Dick Davis, Professor and Chair of the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Department, Ohio State University.

Arthur ten Cate and Martijn van der Vorm

Callsign Nassau Dutch Special Forces in Action in the ‘New World Disorder’ Based on exclusive access to both the personnel and the archives of the Royal Netherlands Army Special Forces Regiment (Korps Commandotroepen), this book tells the unique history of the Dutch Green Berets’ operations in the post-Cold War era. With a focus on the Special Forces’ secret missions abroad – especially in Iraq, Afghanistan and West Africa – this narrative provides exceptional insights into the Dutch ‘commando’ community, into the use of Special Forces in modern coalition warfare and into the challenges facing contemporary counter-insurgency campaigns. Callsign Nassau primarily conveys the story of how the Netherlands transformed its Army Special Forces Regiment after 1989 for use in international interventions. How this was done, along with where the Dutch commandos were deployed, is described in detailed reconstructions of their various operations.

Published for the Netherlands Institute of Military History. Arthur ten Cate is Senior Researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH) in The Hague, where he specializes in contemporary military history, international military interventions and special operations warfare.

Integrity and Misconduct in Academic Research in the Netherlands

Today’s increased attention to integrity can be regarded as part of a more comprehensive professional culture. Yet in a desensitised and detached social climate, integrity is no longer self-evident as a core value of professional conduct. Examples of this shift are overabundant.

Integrity and Misconduct in Academic Research in The Netherlands

Attention to scientific integrity fits in completely with this development. Yet what is scientific integrity actually? Is it important to pay so much attention to it? Which issues does it involve? Is anything known about the nature and scope of the problem? In this book Kees Schuyt explores the concept of ‘integrity’, describes cases of fraud and other types of dishonest behaviour in the practices of scientific research and formulates an explicit standard for circumstances where scientific integrity has been contravened. He delves into questions concerning plagiarism and provides a nuanced argument regarding the notion that self-plagiarism (re-using one’s own texts) must be seen as misconduct. In addition, he answers the question as to how a scientific mind-set, which integrity is part of, can best be transmitted to students and new generations of researchers.

Shinkichi Tajiri Universal Paradoxes The paradoxes in the life and artworks of Shinkichi Tajiri (1923-2009) appear to be timeless and intercultural. As a result, they continue to appeal to familiar experiences among a lot of people. Tajiri’s life was not related to one specific culture: American because of place of birth, Japanese because of his parents, French because his career began in Paris, and Dutch because he lived for more than fifty years in the Netherlands. This anthology comprises six essays which reflect from various perspectives on aspects of the timelessness and universal paradoxes in the life and work of Tajiri. Three themes are selected that could be considered as leitmotif throughout his artistic career: the Knot, the Warrior, and the Wall. The Warrior theme is a recurrent theme to purge himself of the horrors of the war. With the Knots he wanted to cut through all mystification that he felt was invading the art scene.

This publication has been made possible by a grant from the Straver Fonds which is managed by the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund, and a grant from the Harten Fonds. Contributions by Kris Schiermeier, Helen Westgeest, Giotta & Ryu Tajiri, Greg Robinson, Herman Pleij, Paul M. Farber and Florian Ebner.
