Autumn 2012 1

Leiden University Press presents its Autumn 2012 catalogue, with the iconic Dutch tulip, Tulipa Oculus Solis on the cover. The tulipa travelled from Turkey to Holland and most of you are familiar with that historical fact and the business development in the area around Leiden. In 2012 the Netherlands celebrates its four hundred year relationship with Turkey which is reflected in this catalogue in a variety of publications: • a n Open Access e-journal: Turkish Studies, supported by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). • t he first extensive Dutch – Turkish dictionary, the result of a multi-year project by researchers from the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) and supported by the Nederlandse Taalunie appears in LUP Reference. • a lavishly illustrated work on Turkish Studies, reflecting both history, travel, Turkish studies and material cultural exchange from 1612 till today. LUP publishes a number of titles supported by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) in the open access library of OAPEN.org. We have extended our available titels with another three new publications. Please have a look at www.OAPEN.org for this growing library of open access monographs and volumes. The other peer reviewed new LUP Academic titles in this catalogue reflect scholarship in various fields of research: Iranian Studies, Archaeology, Art History and Linguistics. Have a look for yourself and visit our website: www.lup.nl We highlight one special project from LEIDEN Publications: Magna Commoditas - Leiden University’s ‘Great Asset’. 425 years library collections and services. Leiden University Library started its collection in 1575 by receiving the Polyglot bible from Prince William of Orange and had its first official venue in 1587. The University Library has played an important role not only during the humanistic Enlightment, but ever since. It has always been a great asset, hence the Latin name Magna Commoditas. The 425 years will be celebrated in October 2012 with an elaborate new version of the history of the library and its special collections.

Islamic rules and norms cover a vast area of behavior and relations. The content of this edited volume will be limited to issues of family relations, with a focus on the normative behaviour and initiatives of Muslims in the West on the one hand, and the reactions thereto by Western societies and legal systems on the other. The focus will be domestic, hence excluding issues of foreign national Muslim laws and international private law. This volume intends to a) provide an overview of the current state of affairs and b) discuss aspects of future developments, studies and policies.

The Secret Lives of Art Works

425 Years Library Collections and Services

Exploring the Boundaries between Art and Life

Leiden University Library has a long history of services around versatile collections and unique sources, dating back to the sixteenth century. The library has always been considered a great asset to the university, not only since the first library room was constructed in 1587, but even before, when founding father William of Orange, in 1575, donated the very first book.

The Secret Lives of Art Works is a collection of essays on the phenomenon that viewers treat works of art as living beings: they attribute life, personhood and agency to them, kiss them, beat them, or claim that portraits look at viewers, and that statues move, breathe and speak. This volume engages in existent theories of these phenomena in art history, psychology, aesthetics and anthropology developed by the members of the Leiden ‘Art, Agency and Living Presence’ group. The Secret Lives of Art Works identifies new areas of research and presents the theoretical and historical account exploring the boundaries between ‘Art and Life’.

Magna Commoditas presents numerous accessions that formed its famous special collections, but also the impact of the digital revolution. It describes the role of the library as one of the cultural centres that gave direction to the development and spread of knowledge during the Enlightenment as well as the efforts of a library continuously trying to meet the manifold challenges created by new developments in science and culture and by changing demands.

Prof. dr. Caroline van Eck is professor of Architectural History and Theory at Leiden University.

Magna Commoditas is a fully illustrated and thoroughly researched story of the interaction between dozens of librarians and thousands of library visitors in past and present: from readers of chained books to current users of webservices.

Conflict of Faculties

Conflict and Development in Iranian Film

Perspectives on Artistic Research and Academia Artistic research is an endeavour in which the artistic and the academic are connected. In this emerging field of research artistic practices contribute as research to what we know and understand, and academia opens its mind to forms of knowledge and understanding that are entwined with artistic practices. Henk Borgdorff also addresses how we comment on such issues, and how the things we say cause the practices involved to manifest themselves in specific ways, while also setting them into motion. In this sense, this work not only explores the phenomenon of artistic research in relation to academia, but it also engages with that relationship. Henk Borgdorff is professor of Research in the Arts at the University of the Arts, The Hague, and visiting professor of Aesthetics at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Conflict and Development in Iranian film tells the story of the history and development of Iranian cinema in the light of artistic and philosophical alliance within the Persian visual and poetic tradition. This volume collects eight essays that highlight different aspects of Iranian film and television series. “This book advances our critical understanding of Iranian cinema and is a most welcome addition to the scholarly works available in the field. (Nasrin Rahimieh Maseeh Chair and Director Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture & Professor of Comparative Literature)

Representing Japanese Colonial ‘Heritage’ in Taiwan

The Journal of Turkish Studies will appear in May 2012

This study aims to provide an insight in the underlying fabric of colonial remains in Taiwan. Heritage became a prevailing phenomenon during the formation of modern nation-states. The image of Japan as an advanced modernized nation is rooted within Taiwan and is represented by heritage activities associated with Japanese colonial sites. The case of Japanese colonial heritage in Taiwan shows similarities and differences to the situation of colonial sites within the postcolonial metropole/colony power unbalance.

400 jaar vriendschap

Berichten uit middeleeuws Rusland: dagelijks leven en communicatie

Nederland in Turkije, Turkije in Nederland is a fully illustrated edited volume concerning the conception of the Turkish people and their culture in the Netherlands and the conception of the Dutch people and their culture in Turkey.
