Revolutie of zinsbegoocheling?

Thirteen Centuries of Creed, Conflict and Coexistence

brief history of islam in europe

A Brief History of Islam in Europe presents an overall presentation and discussion of developments ever since Islam appeared on the European stage thirteen centuries ago. The events and stories presented increase the understanding of present debates on, and notions of, Islam and Muslims in Europe. The leading questions in discussing the role of the Islam in Europe are: how and in what ways did Europeans and Muslims interact, and what is the role of religion therein? And for those Europeans who had never met a Muslim: what was their image of Islam, and how did they study the Muslim?

thirteen centuries of creed , conflict and coexistence

This book shows that in the course of thirteen centuries the Muslim as well as Islam have undergone many metamorphoses. The Muslim has entered the European stage as a conqueror, antichrist, scholar, benign ruler, corsair, tradesman and fellow citizen. The image of Islam has meandered accordingly, as a religion that was feared as an enemy or embraced as a partner against heretical Christians, despised as an abomination or admired as a civilization, and studied for missionary, academic, colonial or security purpose. Maurits S. Berger is Professor of Islam and the West at Leiden University. He is also a Senior Research Associate at the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague, and a member of the Advisory Council for International Affairs at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He often engages in European public debates and policies regarding the Muslim world and Muslims in the West.

A Brief History of Islam in Europe

Maurits Berger’s Brief History of Islam in Europe, is a tour de force which synthesizes the multiple encounters of Islam and Europe since 700 BC until now. It provides a fresh perspective on the ways history is politically and academically reconstructed to make sense of the Muslim presence in today’s Europe, and highlights the special status of Islam as the other of Europe over thirteen centuries of continuous encounters. This book is a must read for students of immigration, religion and politics. — Jocelyne Cesari, Senior Research Fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs and Director of the Islam in the West Program at Harvard University.

Terrorism and counterterrorism Comparing Theory and Practice Terrorism has arguably been one of the defining factors of our age. In many parts of the world, it has in recent times been one of the most important threats to peace, security and stability. But what does this exactly mean? What is the nature of this threat? Who or what is threatened, how, by whom and why? What can be done about it or how can we at least limit the impact of terrorism and make sure that terrorists do not make headlines and manage to scare us? These are just a handful of questions that will be addressed in this handbook that consists of three parts. First it focuses on the essence of terrorism as an instrument to achieve certain goals. The second part provides an overview of the state of (counter) terrorism studies. Since ‘9/11’ terrorism studies have grown exponentially, reflecting the rise in perceived threats. What theories, assumptions and conventional wisdom has it produced that could be of help in understanding terrorism and dealing with it? The final part looks into the implications and possibilities for policy making. Edwin Bakker is Professor in Terrorism Studies and Director of the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism at Leiden University. He is editor of the journals Security & Human Rights and Journal of Strategic Security. Many students worldwide have already participated in his online course on Terrorism and Counterterrorism.

Book is linked to a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Terrorism and Counterterrorism (www.coursera.org).

POLITICAL SCIENCE

European Democracies in Comparative Perspective Regulating Political Parties provides a novel and valuable contribution to the existing literature on political parties. The volume is based on the papers presented at an international symposium held at Leiden University, which brought together national and international scholars from the disciplines of law and political science to discuss the regulation of political parties, in the Netherlands and elsewhere, from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. The book aims to address the existing lacuna in the literature on the subject of party law by discussing the various dimensions of party regulation, in Europe and in other regions of the world, addressing both conceptual issues and recent empirical findings. Ingrid van Biezen is Professor of Comparative Politics at Leiden University. She is a co-editor of ‘Acta Politica’, the official journal of the Dutch Political Science Association. She has published extensively on comparative party politics, political finance, and democratic theory.

A Gentle Occupation

Dutch Military Operations in Iraq, 2003-2005 This book analyses the way Dutch forces conducted military stabilization operations in the aftermath of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion in Iraq. It looks at why, in contrast to most allied troops elsewhere in Iraq, Dutch forces in Al Muthanna province met with little resistance and left Iraq self-confident of their ability to deal with this type of military operation. On the basis of extensive archival research and interviews, the authors examine the way the Dutch government consciously framed this mission as different from the American and British occupation and often in contrast to the actual situation on the ground. Furthermore, they unravel the widespread idea of a unique and more effective ‘Dutch approach’, by dealing with the Dutch case in detail and by subsequently examining it in the context of the Coalition Forces’ experiences. In the end, they argue that despite effective tactical reflexes by Battlegroup commanders, stability in Al Muthanna was first and foremost conditions-driven rather than the result of a unique approach by Dutch military forces. Arthur ten Cate is a Senior Researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH) in The Hague, where he specializes in contemporary military history, international military interventions and special operations warfare.

Arthur ten Cate Thijs Brocades Zaalberg

Thijs Brocades Zaalberg is a Researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH) in The Hague, where he focuses on colonial warfare, counter-insurgency and peace operations. This is a very well written, extensively researched draft that will fill a niche (particularly in the English language) on the role the Netherlands played in the initial phase of operations in post-Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. It will be of value to a specialized audience including the military, policy makers, and political scientists. – John Gordon IV, Professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School, Santa Monica, California.

For the first time A Gentle Occupation anatomizes a ‘European’ approach in facing and fighting an insurgency in Iraq. It does so on the basis of previously classified documents from the Ministry of Defence, as well as on archival material from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its value for the international debate on Iraq, Afghanistan , and the future of military stabilization efforts in general cannot be overestimated. – Bernhard Chiari, Director at the Bundeswehr Center of Military History and Social Sciences in Potsdam, Germany. In the burgeoning literature on the American and British experience in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, there is this fine study by Brocades Zaalberg and Ten Cate of the Dutch experience in Al Muthanna province from 2003 to 2005. This book will certainly help scholars and decision-makers understand the recent Dutch experience and how it shapes Dutch attitudes, policies and practices. – Joseph T. Jockel, Professor of Canadian Studies at St. Lawrence University, New York. HISTORY

Vitality and Dynamism Interstitial Dialogues of Language, Politics, and Religion in Morocco’s Literary Tradition

Anti-colonial literature is not necessarily ‘combat literature’ as Fanon and Déjeux have both suggested in their own writings. While it is often combative, there is also anti-colonial literature that emphasizes the human and the humane rather than the oppositional and contentious; it cannot be fair to label all anti-colonial literature as combative, even if one were to expand the definition of ‘combat’ to include peaceful struggles against oppression or dehumanization. This book suggests that the relationship between the West and the rest of the world has been imagined as a relationship of Self (the West) to Other (the rest of the world), ordered and bordered geographically by the whims of Europeans and creating a Center-Periphery paradigm. These invented boundaries of humanity serve to separate geographical sites, but more, they serve to enclose the Empire and exoticize other cultures. Boundaries are often spatial, but more often, they are related to relationships and colonialization.

Nostalgia for the Present

Ethnography and Photography in a Moroccan Berber Village Anthropology and photography have been linked since the nineteenth century, but their relationship has never been entirely comfortable — and has grown less so in recent years. Nostalgia for the Present aims to repair that relationship by involving intentional participants in an inclusive conversation; it is the fruit of a collaboration among an ethnographer, a photographer, a group of Moroccan farmers, and Abdelkrim Bamouh — a native intellectual whose deep understanding of rural Morocco made him not merely a translator but a facilitator of the dialogue. The result is an arresting portrait of everyday life in Tagharghist, a contemporary High Atlas village. The pictures are central, and the text built around them creates a dialogical form of visual ethnography. Nostalgia for the Present is both a memorialization of a people and a way of life, and a rich foray into the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration. The photos in this book evoke a sense of nostalgia, a longing, and the words explore the contexts and ambiguities that vitalize it. As the book concludes, nostalgia happens in our present, and is about our future. It is a call from our heart (or our liver, as villagers would say) to attend carefully to something we are leaving, something our gut tells us we ought to cherish and preserve, and bring with us on our inexorable march into the unknown.

Pouneh Shabani-Jadidi Processing Compound Verbs in Persian

Processing Compound Verbs in Persian A Psycholinguistic Approach to Complex Predicates This is the first monograph investigating how Persian compound verbs are processed in the mental lexicon, through which it can be inferred how they are stored, organized, and accessed. The study examines Persian compound verbs in light of psycholinguistic theories on poly-morphemic word processing as well as linguistic theories of complex predicates.

This is a solid scholarly research that explores the processing of Persian compound verbs in the mental lexicon. As such, this study contributes to the fields of Persian psycholinguistics as well as Persian linguistics. While the theoretical field of Persian linguistics such as syntax has received much attention, the applied aspects such as psycholinguistics remains to be further explored. The significance of the current study lies on the fact that it applies the findings of the existing theories to cutting edge empirical research. — Anousha Sedighi, Associate Professor of Persian, Portland State University.

Zoroastrian Survival in Contemporary Tehran

RECLAIMING THE FARAVAHAR

‘Reclaiming the Faravahar’ is an ethnographic study of the contemporary Zoroastrians in Tehran. It examines hundreds of public discursive and ritual performances to show how they utilize national, religious, and ethnic categories to frame the Zoroastrian identity within the longstanding conflict between Iranian Shiˁa and Arab Sunnis, defining and defending Zoroastrians’ identity and values in Shiˁi dominated Iran. The book focuses on two main concerns of the community: continuity with the past, hence a claim of being the authentic Iranians; and distinction from the dominant Shiˁa, thus appealing to fellow non-Zoroastrians who are disenchanted with the Islamic Republic. It also provides an historical sketch of Zoroastrians’ condition after the Arab incursion into the Persian territory of seventh-century Iran and some of the challenges they have faced, such as emigration, conversion, absorption, and declining numbers.

Navid Fozi is a Fulbright U.S. Scholar conducting fieldwork on Iranian diaspora in Malaysia. He has held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore. Fozi has given us an insightful and ethnographically-rich exploration of how the post-revolutionary Iranian state has sought to regulate and circumscribe the practices of the Zoroastrian community, and how that community has adapted its own traditions in order to survive under such conditions. An important contribution to the anthropological study of non-Muslim minorities in Muslim majority states. — Charles Hirschkind, Associate Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley.

CONFLICT AND DEVELOPMENT The Holy Drama depicts the role of the Phrophet’s granddaughter Zeynab during the tragic death of the third Shiite Imam Hoseyn in Karbala in 680. IN IRANIAN FILM This book depicts how Zeynab has become a role model in modern Iranian society, especially during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. A. International Cultural Studies in Tehran, before she started her academic career in Persian Studies at Leiden University. "This is a timely addition to the growing body of scholarship on the subject of ta'ziya, based chiefly on previously unstudied textual sources along with a masterful analysis of a central aspect of twelver Shia Islam as practiced in Iran." Sunil Sharma, Boston University

“For us non-Iranian readers of Hafiz’s 14th-century ghazal poems, Iranian attitudes toward the premier lyric poet in the 1,000-year history of Persian literature, are almost as intriguing as Hafiz’s poetry itself. First is the P ER S IAN PASS I O N P L AY I N M O D E R N Iinclination RAN of Iranian readers to find deep, spiritual meaning in that poetry. Second is their personal identification with what they perceive as Hafiz’s M a hn i a A. Ne matol l ah i M ah an i philosophy. Third is their linking of Iranian cultural identity with Hafiz’s life and works to the point where some educated Iranians define part of their Iranianness by referencing Hafiz and even consider him a relevant political voice. These features of Iranian appreciation of Hafiz come alive on page after page in The Reception of Hafiz in Nineteenth and Twentieth-Century Persia, while author Bahman Solati himself epitomizes Iranian love of and identification with the poet’s stances and themes in his poems.” Michael Craig Hillmann, The University of Texas at Austin

Bahman Solati is Assistant Professor in Persian Language. He is the author of several publications, including Rubaiyyat-i-Hakim Umar Khayyam, and Persian Proverbs in three volumes. “Hafiz, the national lyric poet of Iran, has been a unique force in the development of the Persian poetical tradition. This very scholarly and well researched book examines the influence of Hafiz on the writers of the most turbulent years of modern Iran. Solati’s understanding of the sociopolitical milieu of nineteenth and twentieth century Iran, as well as of the Persian literary tradition has enabled him to produce a comprehensive study of the subject, which will be of considerable help in the field of ‘Hafizology’ and in the understanding of modern Persian literature.” Parvin Loloi, Independent Scholar

Meaning versus Grammar An Inquiry into the Computation of Meaning and the Incompleteness of Grammar Meaning versus Grammar investigates the complicated relationship between grammar, computation, and meaning in natural languages. It details conditions under which meaning-driven processing of natural language is feasible, discusses an operational and accessible implementation of the grammatical cycle for Dutch, and offers analyses of a number of further conjectures about constituency and entailment in natural language. Crit Cremers is Associate Professor in Formal Semantics and Computational Linguistics at Leiden University. Maarten Hijzelendoorn is Senior Software Engineer at the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University. Hilke Reckman is Senior Researcher in the information Retrieval Industry.

MEANING VERSUS

GRAMMAR An Inquiry into the Computation of Meaning and the Incompleteness of Grammar

This book is unique in my experience in giving this amount of detail to setting out the Dutch case with respect to separately a parser and generator, and the motivation for this as a property of the framework itself is wholly novel. But what makes this book such a winner is its style: I know of no other book at this level of formal explicitness that is such a joy to read. – Ruth Kempson, Professor of Linguistics, King’s College London.

Contemporary Rhetorical Citizenship Contemporary Rhetorical Citizenship offers the concept of rhetorical citizenship as a meeting ground for the burgeoning community of scholars interested in rhetoric’s place in society. It brings together contributions from several disciplinary traditions in communication studies and neighbouring fields. The concept of rhetorical citizenship highlights the discursive, processual, and participatory aspects of civic life. It builds on the ancient idea that rhetoric is what makes civilized society possible; citizenship is in large part discursively based. Legal rights, privileges and material conditions are not the only constituents of citizenship; discourse between citizens is arguably the basis of what it means to be a citizen. Christian Kock is Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Copenhagen. With Lisa he edited Rhetorical Citizenship and Public Deliberation . Lisa Villadsen is Associate Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Copenhagen. The volume emphasizes the language-oriented rhetorical notion of citizenship and shifts us away from formal, legal-oriented, state-centric definitions. It makes a strong case for why attention to rhetoric is useful in understanding and addressing contemporary public controversies. This is a major collection of works within the space of rhetoric and communication inquiry. — G. Thomas Goodnight, Professor at the Annenberg School of Communication & Journalism, University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

It provides a great selection of actual research on rhetoric and communication from very different traditions, departments, methodologies and angles. Rhetorical Citizenship as a conceptual frame brings thematic cohesion and possibilities for comparison and synergy. The dual focus on the receptive and the participatory aspects of civic interaction is a strong point. — Jaap de Jong, Professor of Journalism, New Media and Modern Rhetoric, Leiden University Centre for Linguistics.
