Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am currently a student studying marketing at The McCombs School of Business at UT, Austin. At this point school consumes my life but I love exploring all of the pretty views and delicious food around the city. I live with my boyfriend, Roger, and two cats, Ezra and Levi. Our favorite thing to do is cuddle on the couch and watching our favorite TV shows (about 15 different series we keep up with!). Roger and I also love traveling so we try to do that as much as we can.

When did you become interested in photography? How has your work changed since then? I have many old photos that my dad has taken because he has always been a photographer. Almost half are just candid pictures of my mom getting into the car or holding my brother and me. I am certain that his love for capturing memories fell right onto me. For as long as I can remember I have been taking pictures of anything and everything. It used to be mainly close ups of flowers or my shoes or my cat but since then I have been more into portraits and landscapes. There is no doubt that I still take

“F O R A S LO N G A S I C A N REMEMBER I HAVE B E E N TA K I N G P I C T U R E S OF ANYTHING AND EV E RY T H I N G”

photos of everything in sight.

How would you describe your style? My style is constantly changing and it really depends on where I am or who I’m with. With my cousin, my style is very editorial. While on vacation, I am 100% into landscape photography and focusing on the different colors that the sky makes on a different part of the world. I am also really inspired by other photographers and my style varies along with the great photos I find.

What type of cameras do you like to shoot with? Right now I use a Canon Rebel t4i. I really love Canon and have always used them. Eventually I would like to upgrade but this is a great starter camera and extremely reliable. Of course I also use my iPhone constantly!

Would you consider your photos more planned or spontaneous? My photos are definitely more planned. I love getting ready to take a bunch of pictures of my cats, a trip I am going on, or the food I am about to eat. The times when it is more spontaneous are usually recorded on my iPhone camera but I definitely prefer my Canon.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m half Belgian, half Filipino and was born in Germany, where I lived for about 10 years. Because of a job opportunity, my family decided to move to Belgium, and now my hometown, Ghent. My parents aren’t really the creative people you’ll ever met. Don’t really know where I got these creative vibes from, but my sister is getting them too! Right now I’m studying Graphic Design, working on graphic design projects outside school, blogging on www.ghentstreets.com and sharing my fashion/style/life... bits and bobs on my personal blog, called Doris Dave.

How would you describe your work? A pretty difficult question to answer as I’m still learning, experimenting and getting to know myself as a designer. And I think that goes for any other creative one. For now I’ll say simple and basic. I like to keep it fresh and straight forward. My concepts and designs don’t have big stories or other bla-bla behind it. I just go with my gut feeling! When I look back at recent projects, I do see that I often design in black and white or just with one colour. I think it just goes with the design process. It’s not something I decide in the beginning.

What kind of design projects are you interested in? Creating visual identities. Just love the idea to give a certain company, event or whatsoever a visual image and the best thing is that when you see it pop-up now and then. Seeing your creation come a live! Next to that, I’m a sucker for creating GIF’s and moodboards.

15

Which software do you prefer to work with and why? I can’t live without Illustrator. Ok, I can, but it’s such an amazing tool! When I first got to know this program, I remember how many times I hated it and cursed about it. It just took a little bit of patience and I realised how many design possibilities there were.

What advice would you give to people who want to pick up graphic design? First of all you need to have to be fully interested in graphic design. Secondly, practise a lot! Improve your skills and be confident about it. Internships are the best way! Thirdly, be yourself and create your own voice. Show the world what you’ve got by creating an online portfolio and share it with everyone. Let people know you exist. It’s a very competitive world. And get to know other designers too or people from the creative sector! Networking is so important! Last, it won’t be easy for sure, but hey if you love it, make sure you don’t give up and just go for it.

How do you stay creative? Well there are several things that keep my creative juices high! 1. Keep a notebook. 2. Take pictures or film. 3. Meet new people. 4. Surround yourself with creative people. 5. Read books and watch movies. 6. Go out. 7. Don’t think too much and just do ... And this is definitely my favourite one: Take risks. Step out of your comfort zone. Seriously. That’s the best thing you can do. Safely of course!

What are your other hobbies? Travelling, going on adventures! And no, it doesn’t mean you have to take the airplane to do that. For example: I’m interning at Mo Ka, which is a multi-disciplined design agency in Brussels. I’ve never ever explored that city. It maybe sounds crazy for someone from Belgium that thinks Brussels as an exotic/foreign place. It’s because it’s so different from my home town. It has that international feeling and most of the

16

18

people over there speak french, which I absolutely love! It’s a great place to practice my french. Next to that, I also love to film. I’ve just started experimenting with it and I’m pretty excited to corporate this medium also in my work and blog.

What are your next steps? That’s a tough question. Right now I’m interning at Mo Ka in Brussels and this year I’ll graduate as a graphic designer. Who knows, maybe I’ll decide to study further (perhaps more in the fashion sector), intern at other interesting agencies or find a job. For now I want too graduate, blog consistently and oui, ‘perfect’ my french!

What are your next steps? As I slowly advance past the blurred line between teen and adult, the most obvious step I need to make next is figuring out what I really want to do with the next coming years of my life. Traveling is something I have always wanted to do, and could come quite easily considering I’m pretty responsible with my savings. But I must admit, I’m ready to be in a working field. Staying busy is the only way I know how to live. Whenever I have too much free time I end up in a slump and unsure of what to do with that extra time. So for me, I need to find the perfect balance between work and play for my life after post secondary and hope that all the years of schooling was well worth it.

Here are just a few random facts about me: • I have lost or broken approximately 15 pairs of earphones within the last few years • All the part time jobs I’ve had were always less than 5 minutes away (including my current one) • The one drink I could have every day is a London Fog (Earl Grey Tea Latte) • My favourite Pokemon is Spheal - I love it so much I never let it evolve into Walrein • I regret only getting into Amy Winehouse’s music after her death, because I would love to have seen her perform live • One of my favourite gifts ever received was a Totoro backpack • I already know what to name my two future cats: Chiaku and Tutu (I can’t explain this without sounding mental) • I apparently chose Demi Lovato as a role model over my own parents back in grade 7

SOPHIA ANDERSON HO USTON, T X | 17

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I just graduated high school, last December, because I wanted to pursue Personal Narrative writing without the curricular responsibilities. I enjoy reading and studying because this is what I’m doing throughout most of my day. I also love doing yoga, playing piano, drinking coffee, and spending time with my family.

How did you get into fashion? Fashion has always been very interesting to me. Growing up, I had watched my oldest sister, Hannah Anderson, put on these insane pieces of clothing with different patterns and just experiment with the ordinary, sometimes creating the worst outfits. I then became more aware of it when I experienced a difficult time with my family and only had a suitcase to dress from. It was then that I realized I never wanted anyone to suspect that I had ever been homeless, so I dressed the nicest I possibly could, from the suitcase. I took my situation and made it extra-ordinary.

29

How has your taste in fashion changed over time? I think that people act as cycles, because we’re ever-changing. Personally, I have gone through very drastic phases of my taste. I had times when I loved the 70’s, the 80’s, the 60’s, and sometimes

“I TOOK MY

I dressed just plain terrible. Yet, without those evolving developments, I wouldn’t be where

There are many things that influence my daily wardrobe. I always uphold my own faith in class, people like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, and the simple factor of confidence. I love to feel confident. The thought of people becoming who they really are inspires me. When I get dressed in the morning, I don’t want to duplicate something that’s already been done, but I want to dress so significantly that I impress myself.

What advice would you give to people who want to develop their own personal style? The advice that I would give is to be yourself. If

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a hybrid. An introvert with extroverted tendencies. A small town girl with big city dreams. A full time intellectual and part time comedian. An explorer who likes to be spontaneous about my adventures but also somehow plan them.

35

36

“A N E X P L O R E R WHO LIKES TO BE S P O N TA N E O U S ABOUT MY ADVENTURES BUT ALSO SOMEHOW P L A N T H E M .”

Why do you take photos? I feel like photography is powerful. If you do it right you can capture emotion, time, and character. I also really enjoy doing it as a service to others. Who doesn’t like getting a nice picture of themselves? No one. Everyone wants a picture that they feel like best represents them.

Would you consider your photos more planned or spontaneous?

Totally spontaneous. I did a project last year where I took a portrait a week and 99% of the time I had no idea what I was looking for. Definitely not something I recommend to try.

What type of cameras do you like to shoot with? This question always makes me laugh. I have only “experimented” with photography for almost two years now so I still shoot with the camera my friends surprised me with, which is a T3 Rebel. It’s funny because sometimes I feel like David going up against Goliath and here I am with my small pebble and slingshot. Somehow it still does the trick. I also started a Polaroid project at the beginning of the year so I also like to use my Fujifilm instamax 210.

37

38

39

How would you explain your style of photography? I’ve thought long and hard on how to answer this question and it always seems to stump me. I don’t think I can put my work in a box because I really try to be versatile but if I had to name it I’d call it “the

What do you want viewers to take away from your work? I want to provoke thought. I want my pictures to be more than just something you maybe double tap on Instagram or scroll past on a website. I want my work to be like a painting in an art museum, where you can look at it from five different angles and perspectives and somehow each point of view makes as much sense as the previous.

WELCOME, OH BLESSED SPRINGTIME. The beginning of spring often mimics the start of the new

year with fresh outlooks and new beginnings. For many, the new season calls for organization. For others, new wardrobe additions beckon from restocked store shelves. And then there are those of us with a need for life and style to collide beautifully in the form of artfully designed notebooks, iPhone cases, art, and accessories. But more on those pieces in a moment. Julia Kostreva hails from California where she is an art director and designer. On her site, juliakostreva.com, she claims that her core studio practice balances creativity with functionality and embraces design distilled from storytelling. Kostreva describes her design aesthetic as “minimal, classic, new,” which at first glance seem slightly conflicting,

Kostreva’s studio offers creative services, including logo design, brand identity, web design and development, blog and app design, packaging, and email marketing among many others to an impressive lineup of clients, such as CB2, Need Supply, and OnceWed. On the site, she explains that they “thoughtfully refine the inspiration within [the] company and reflect its core essence in all places, whether in paper or digital presence.” Back to the aforementioned products. 1. Sketch No calligraphy pen? No problem. With a pencil and a blank sheet of paper, sketch out your favorite quote. Don’t know where to start? Check out Pinterest for inspiration on words and styles. Whatever happens, don’t worry if your quote doesn’t look ‘perfect’. Your handwriting is uniquely yours. Celebrate it!

45

2. Ink it out After you are satisfied with what you have on paper, carefully go over it with a ballpoint pen.

3. Add the details This step makes your quote look more like calligraphy. With the same inky pen from the previous step, thicken certain areas of your quote. You can do this by extending parts of a letter and filling it in. A helpful tip is to visualize which parts of a letter is the downstroke. For example, I thicken the part of T in ‘the’ that was a downstroke.

3. Erase! Erase! Erase! After the ink had dried, carefully erase all the pencil marks.

3. Fin! Marvel at your newly made faux calligraphy piece. Place it in a gold vintage frame. Snail mail it to your friend. The possibilities are endless.
